Not me, but a colleague of mine ordered 10,000 pens with <company>.com printed on them - but our company had a .org address.14
-
Started working in a company as an intern, they want me to do everything whether I know how to or not.12
-
So I just finished an unpaid! Internship at a local tech company.
At the final meeting my boss said that he wants to keep me in the company. But my "skill level" is not high enough to pay me just now, and if I would stay as an unpaid intern for some months, we could talk about being paid.
After I refused, he was mad at me for "abandoning the team" and "hurting the company"
I hope other company's will be better. :/22 -
One of my colleague took 3 week vacation leave. End of vacation time he requested for extending the leave. Company is not allowed him, so he send resignation email. After 1year we get to know in vacation time he already joined new company. I asked him why, he said "That three weeks is trials. If nothing workout he planned to going back to old company." 🤨4

October - Hired
November - Hear that CEO 2 was stealing the company money
December - Dismissing 6 persons. CEO 1 says to me that, since I'm the last hired, I'll be the first dismissed.
March - Company doesn't get better. Dismissing 3 persons... still there.
May - Company doesn't get better. Dismissing 2 persons... still there.
July - Company doesn't get better. Dismissing 9 persons... still there.
Now, with the remaining money the company should live for about 2 years and not dismiss employees anymore.
We were 25 employees, where are 4 now. I feel like the winner of Survivor.10 -
"Just try and move your workflow to Windows, it's not that different from Linux"
My boss, when I asked him if I could install Arch on my company laptop20 -
Manager: We do not identify as a tech company so don’t expect tech company salary increases this year
Dev: Well don’t expect me to bring a tech work ethic then
Manager: !!5 -
So today I receive 23 emails on DMCA takedown notice from last year project (which is a personal project). I asked Github why they think it is violating their policy, they told me they receive tonnes of complaints from a company, they shared the chat and that's the ex-company that fired me.
Even the project is not related to them, they seem to want to "Cancel" me on Github. Bro this is Github, not Twitter! Cancel culture does not work here.
Some of my IoT projects they flag it In Github, which I believe my ex-company they don't do any IOT projects. How the fuck it is violating their so called "code nondisclosure"?24 -
Bad news: Company shutting down, gave one day notice and was told not to come in for work the next day. Was compensated, of course. But still, it sucks.
Good news: I'm a developer.9 -
When a company emails 8000 + employees asking 3 people not to be disturbed in DevOps for 3 weeks. You know those 3 people have been screwed over by unrealistic deadlines.6
-
The bad thing today: I killed my laptop with coffee.
The good thing today: it was my company laptop, not my private one.17 -
My company bought us a Xbox and few games for playing in free time... I am not going home this weekend...4

An old friend, just asked if I can make thier company a custom Operating system. not an app an entire new OS... and if I have time to do it on the "side".10

1. Applied to a tech company based in Seattle
2. Interviewed
3. Got rejected because "At the moment, they do not hire international students."
Then, why did you interview me in the first place? :')4 -
Do you agree to this rule given by my company ?
"Employees are not allowed to create any sort of library for any language after or during working hours, whether for personal or company projects. As they might somehow expose companies code to the open-source world."
Personally, I created quite much (not that much) of library , I created for fun, today I was told to delete ALL , so those who use my package , Im sorry :(73 -
"I'll not sign off this project unless you promise me that the app will NOT GET WET WHEN YOU UPLOAD IT TO THE CLOUD" (was a desk application... I left the company that same day and promised myself I'll never get back)4

Recently my company worked in project with a big international company which uses a crazy framework to build a part of there webpage. This framework only used random IDs and class names and not even different html elements. And to completely freak out all elements are positioned absolute and on every change the whole page go rendered.7

So many developer that does not know how to generate a simple .csr file. Here you go:
$DOMAIN=www.yourdomain.com
$STATE=State
$CITY=The city
$COMPANY=Company Name Gmbh
openssl req -utf8 -nameopt multiline,utf8 -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -sha256 -out $DOMAIN.csr -keyout $DOMAIN.key -subj "/C=Your CountryCode/ST=$STATE/L=$CITY/O=${ORG:-$COMPANY}/OU=${ORG:-IT}/CN=$DOMAIN"11 -
Company is about to move. Fellow developer jokes on a general meeting that people should delete stuff on their computer to make then easier to transport.
I'm not sure everyone got the joke....1 -
Small company (1-100 people).
The head of the company comes into the 4-man engineering department and tells the RF engineer that the wireless project will be canceled. The project timeline the RF engineer proposed the week before is not feasible for the company.
RF engineer asks, point blank, if he should pack up and leave. The guy says "no".
A few weeks later the RF engineer puts in his letter of resignation. The head of the company pulls him aside and asks why he's leaving. Wants to know what went wrong...
THE F***ING RF GUY WON'T BE DOING RF, THAT'S WHY!!!
Management at this company is so confused.
(Had to rant. I hear that's what this site is for...)3 -
Fuck recruiters! I told them i want to work in a bigger company and my JS are not the best.
I just drove a freaking hour to a company who wants a diehard JS'er and exists of 4! People.
Assholes!7 -
If you don't let the company enslave you then you're not a team player.
Also, you're definitely NOT flexible!8 -
Really fucking sick of people taking my coffee mugs on the drying rack and taking them back to their desk. It's not yours. It doesn't have our company logo or your company logo. It's obviously not yours so don't fucking touch it.
This is the second coffee mug of mine to go missing in 16 months. You work at a tech company buy your own fucking mug or open your mouth wide and catch your hot bean water you fuck.13 -
"I strive for code quality and maintainability. I actually do. And i will not work for a company that does not care about it and just wants something done as fast as possible.
The only time i will do something quick and dirty is if it's actually urgent. And even then with one condition - my next task will be to fix it properly.
I do not care about your deadlines. I will do my best to meet them, but not at the expense of code quality. I've seen too many projects fall into technical debt, where productivity is so low, that the only way to move forward is hire more people and start working on a project 2.0
And please do not lie about how great your company is, if it's not. These kind of things surface very soon, and you will have wasted both of our time, because as i said - i will not work for a company that does not care about code quality."
you think i'll ever get a job again if i put this on my CV ? :D10 -
The fact that I can buy a game for $70 price tag today, and still run the risk of it getting taken away from me, by the company that built it, is why I'll always pirate games.
If buying is not owning, then pirating is not stealing.12 -
My IT team installed Antivirus on my 5 year old Mac Mini due to company security policy after the recent Ransomware attacks.
Now my Mac is slow as fuck. They are not even providing me new Mac, due to budget constraints. Totally fucked.
Fuck Ransomware. Fuck security policies. Fuck my company. Fuck everyone. Fuck everything. 😤9 -
Dear diary,
I've always thought companies not using any kind of vcs is a myth. Today I learned that one of my friends is working for such a company.6 -

Yesterday I got my first promotion that was based on merit and not because I graduated or moved company 🍻
#feelsgoodman5 -
So a friend called me over to his newly opened company. He just started, along with two other partners, so 3 of them on the management structure. It started as a service-oriented company, not single-product based company. Strategically, over the course of 4 years, these two other bosses kicked my friend out. I followed. All the people in the company eventually followed. Now we are about to start selling our services to them for around double the fee. #justice

Not a deadline but I once worked for a company that regularly asked for “accurate estimates” which I found hilariously oxymoronic7

So...my company decided to say that I am not effective because not working more than 12 hours per day and work on weekends. But in my contract stated 9:30 - 6:3018

Client (big company selling luxury vehicles):
- "We need to replace analytics system on our website"
- "Since it is almost useless"

- "We have already arranged budget for that project"
- "Like 200 euros, that must be enough"

FUCK THEM FOR CHANGING MY PAYROLL.

Product team having a proof of concept demo with client:
Sales to client: "Just for the record, we are not selling this to a rival company. Because we really want this technology exclusive to you"
Me (thinking to myself): "Oh really? We just had a demo with them last 2 weeks"
One of the core values of our company is Integrity, and I am not just seeing it. -
At a previous company, a new IT director decided we should outsource the development of a webapi to another company, but this outside company would not be allowed access to the database, so we had to develop a webapi to provide data to the outside company's system, so we could call their webapi and get the same data back.6

omg apple does not like to make things easy! Trying to set up developer accounts for a company but a company can't be an agent? a team member who isn't an agent can't create certificates or keys?
Android development seems so easy and nice now6 -
So this just happened... not to me, but at my friend's company.
The devs are being congratulated and spurred on for working late! I don't know about you, but this is not the kind of culture that should be encouraged.15 -
In india
Teachers teach students to code, without any field experience
These students learns things tht they dont need in their life and becomes teachers
The cycle continues...
From my genius analysis, we can see that these students need not go to a company to work like a horse,
Why are we in a company working like a horse?13 -
Today is the first saturday where that is not a working day for me.

You were hired, not adopted.

Recruiter: Hello I’m recruiting for an exciting opportunity at a rapidly growing company with loads of potential
Dev: *Looks up company on google*
Dev: Their stock has been declining for the past 2 years. 3 months ago their valuation just dropped by 80%…. How are they growing?
Recruiter: Oh that happened to every company at the end of 2021.
Dev: …I guarantee you it did not.
Recruiter: …

I reply sviluppo@mycompany.it
They say it's not good, it's not associated only to me.

They reply the is more secure my private gmail account.
They sent the credentials to my gmail account.3 -
Reminder that you shouldn't trust head hunters.
I reached out to one a month or two back, because I knew they had worked with Company X in the past, and I figured they might get me a more direct line to HR.
They said company X wasn't hiring, that I should apply to Y and Z.
I started working at company X on Monday. They only wanted me to apply to Y and Z because those are the positions that recruiter was specifically trying to fill.
Recruiters are not your friend. They do not have your best interests at heart. They can be useful, but don't trust them.1 -
Company: our team is like a family, everyone is valued and respected
Reality: We have a predefined power structure that will not be challenged no matter what. This is not a democracy, it's a dictatorship.4 -
Web Devs - How many projects do you typically work on at once? I am currently developing 24 websites at once, most of them custom (homepage). I just feel like that is absurd and my company is absolutely insane. Not to mention I'm the front line for client communication as well, pretty much the project manager AND developer. We're a huge company too, not a start up. Just feel like not having project managers for web dev industry is unprecedented except for freelance. 😡👎🏼18

The joy of being a junior programmer in a marketing company...
Lately it's been 25% programming, 5% fixing other people computer, 70% doing stuff not related to my job2 -
at a previous job at a shit company ran by bible-thumpers, i was rebuilding the company website for my a-hole boss. I asked him where I should get images from- if there was a stock photo site he preferred or what.
"Just pull them off Google. That's what I do."
Later when I was combing through the site, I saw he'd added images that CLEARLY STATE another COMPANY'S NAME in the image themselves. Nothing like promoting another company on your OWN company website, huh?
(And no, their company name is not ActiveMobi.)
They're still there, 3+ years later. Dumb ass.2 -
It horrifies me how many "senior developers" in our company do not understand branching in code repositories....9

My coworker used to write code but never bothered with indents and nests. He got fired for not following the rules of the company. I know this sounds boring but w/e3
-
Obvious wisdom from me;
1. HR is not your friend. HR is created to protect companies from employees, not to protect employees from companies. HR serve the company and upper level management.
2. If you are victim of mobbing, keep a mobbing diary with exact quoting. Nothing more, nothing less, no speculation. Create an airtight case for future.
3. If you want to change because of mobbing, just find a new job. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT talk to HR about mobbing before you got another job offer at the ready.
4. Present HR with mobbing diary during your exit, imply that you will talk to CEO and take legal actions if you don't get a satisfactory last laugh on the mobber.
5. Do not accept counter-offer from your company-regardless of mobbing case or not. You considered switching to another company, you are branded now and you will be axed at the first chance. Counter-offer is not a guaranteed employment in your company.9 -

Just started working for a new company. Super cool. Just like the last one (as far as perks), except they actually trust their devs.
Old company: Make sure your code is extensible
Devs at old company: You know it's not written in stone right?
Old company: Does that mean you can make it do this?
Devs at old company: No. That's the wrong code base
New company: I need a feature. Get it done when you can
New company devs: Well, guess I'll take some time to refactor all this stuff while I'm at it
~Some time later~
New company: Thanks, that feature works great!
No staring over shoulders, asking when it will be done. No asking why we want to refactor something. As long as work continues to flow, there are no issues. It's great!
Also, if we want to try a new tech, we just have to put together a short paper explaining why it will work better in that situation than the tech that's already in place. -

Got locked out of all systems in the company.
They did not expect me to return after a sick leave and do a handover during my last 5 days in the company.
I wrote them that I'll return today and do a handover.
Got unlocked when I asked if I should go home and never come back 😛4 -

I had an interview with a company that works offshore (works for a big silicon valley company) for an internship program. I liked their bosses vision and how he treats his coworkers. After 1 hour technical interview I asked how much they pay for internship and they told me they are not paying anything. And they said hey we are teaching you how things works. Wait... What? Atleast you can pay my transport and food fees. Fuck you and fuck your company. If you don't pay me a single fucking penny, I am not working with you. There is local laws to pay me some money. If you don't care about laws, I wont care about your fucking company. Burn in hell.5

What's a last day on the job suppose to be like?
I'm sure it's not working until 2am helping the company finalize a project. They are not happy that I decided to go to bed after a 12 hour day instead of pulling an all nighter helping.8 -
I have previously worked with a company where they were copying project codes through a USB and making local backups of the whole project with dates and not using git.4

Depending on the company you get to work for you have 2 choices in Lithuania.
Either you're the outsourced developer (The pay is amazing, many benefits etc...)
Or you work in a company that is not multi-international, then either the pay is much lower, or they expect a lot and push you to the curb with tasks.4 -
What a sad and frustrating day!
I got a call from recruiter. I told him that I'm not actively looking for change. But he requested for 2 mins to listen. He started telling about his company, how great it is, tech stack, perks, salary etc. He is telling everything but not company name, I waited patiently and asked what's the pay I can expect. The number blew my mind, it's nearly double to my current pay. Then...
Me: that sounds amazing, which company is this, and where is it?
Him: it is <my company name> and located at <my current location, same campus>
Me: .....
Him: so, what do you think?
Me: .... I need some time. Let me update my LinkedIn profile first and then, i will get back to you.
Him: sounds wonderful, will call back by Monday. <Call disconnected>
Me: <inside my head> @$_-$#(/+&_#

Need advise which one should i choose.7 -

I'm absolutely terrified by my company... yes, these are fridge magnets. They're all over the place. It's not a tech company, but still... o.o"4

My previous boss has bad habit of relieving employees. He find out his links in a employee
s new company and then god knows what he did with that.
For, that reason I did not mention my current company when I switch but today I tried to find out those people who left before me it was shocking that no one updated their current company.
Creepiness of the former boss was real. Everyone was scared. -
What kind of a fucked up company that has a 9 interview process in a 3 month period and sends the rejection email without a single line of feedback?
They are a fucking startup, not Google! Not even close to a company like Google!!
It's my mistake that I put up with their shit from the beginning but I didn't know any better.4 -
Im so pissed that my company interviewed a friend i referred and ended up hiring 3 other people just as qualified if not less instead. Really wanted to have that friend as a coworker.2

Our company wants us to fill out monthly surveys to tell managers how happy we our at work and to give them feedback. The survey will not be anonymous as they asked us to self identify.
Also the company is small (just over 100 people) and over 1/3rd of staff have been fired over the past year.
Yeahhhhh, how about no4 -
To be fair, it's not really unprofessional. But two weeks ago we recorded a theme song for our company in an empty office room. Though I shouldn't complain, I love doing those kinda things :)1

It pains most when a colleague left the company for good since OJT. Worst is leaving the company without a pay, no refund for not remitted governmentt benefits. I thought this only applies to fucking government or politicians, but also to the company you worked and shared most of your goddamn life not wondering why most good employees left the company.
-
Company Motto: “Business is simple, hire amazing people and let then do their thing”
Company Culture: You can’t do that!! It’s really hard and expensive to hire people with those skills! How would we replace you or save money by continuing to not give you a raise if you did that!?1 -
Let me tell you why I feel like a shit right now. I work as sw dev in a country worse than Germany and company I interviewed is located in Germany. So this is kinda big deal for me.
I interviewed with the company last year, interview went really well. They told me during interview that they would return in 2 weeks tops. It took 2 months for them tor return. For some reason, I was not hired for that position. Later I learned that the division i was gonna work defunded/separated. After learning that the guy I interviewed really tried hard to give me good news but failed-therefore had to delay bad news, I was not sad for not being able to be accepted for that position or delayed response.
Fast forward to this year, I interviewed with the same company for a position as subcontractor employee on another company. Interview took just before Coronavirus situation started to blow up(mid March), I had to return to my home country when the borders were closed asap, 2 day after interview. Fast forward to May I got the job offer and contract with a good salary, July as starting date. But I have no Visa and you apply for visa with a valid contract. German embassies work at minimum capacity, no new applications for any type of visa including work/residence visa. After my serious research I found a crack, emailed the embassy and they finally agreed to give me a special appointment on the start of July. The company I interviewed sent me new contract(August starting date) automatically.
On mid July, I told the company that visa might not come soon enough, I might not make it to August to start to job. We both agreed to replan starting date once i got the Visa.
On August 6, my visa came. I informed them asap, and they told me the other company will return in 3 weeks with new starting date. I was like WTF we were waiting for this visa for months, why do you need 3 weeks. Anyways, 3 weeks past and the other company still did not give any new starting date. I really feel like shit right now. Last week I asked to the "my" company if there is a problem with my employment(the other company might change plans after all) and they said only starting date is the problem, don't worry. On 3 occasions, they reassured me there was no problem(no, I was not asking them like paranoiac obsessive person, they were preemptively saying it in some cases). They say other company employees were really asking about when I was coming frequently.
What should one do in such situation. Do I even have legal rights? Maybe I will look back at this post and laugh at my paranoia, but I would you random internet citizens' ideas on this situation. They say lightning does not strike twice to same point but living same disappointment with the same company would really hurt. rant over, mamba out.8 -
Uuh, when you own a company, it would be advisable to not use the abbreviation "CNT" in your logo.
Some people might misread it 🤭3 -
Pissed that employers try to post fake happy reviews RIGHT AFTER a bad review. How about fixing your company and not treating people like crap?!2
-
This is a post about some gratitude. Many of my friends were not so lucky during COVID and their companies suffered. I am very grateful to be working for a company where my git branch name of a recent commit was 'feature/support-our-two-new-factories'. My company is thriving and growing :)1

I got an email about the job opening of a "HTML Developer" in a leading telecom company in our country.
A HTML Developer? Really ? Are you expecting a html only website in this day an age? How can you be a "leading company" when you did not even know the correct term for a front end web development job post3 -

A few days ago I read an article about an IT company in germany winning in court. They sueed the government for charging them taxes for offering breakfast to their employees. They won because the jury said coffee and dry buns is not a breakfast.
So, my question is is there some guy from called company here on devrant? 🙂5 -
Good news: my company has received more calls today since I can ever remember
Bad news: It's because a telemarketing company spoofed our phone number, so it's not drumming up any business. -
The worst part of being a senior software engineer for a team is that the legacy code of the company is not clear, and there's no documentation.9

Me: I would like to receive external training for RHCSA course and certification
Company: Sure! we will open a ticket for you and keep you posted
Me: it's been almost 3 months, could you give me any updates?
Company: Oh actually you are not eligible! this certification is not aligned with your job description!
Me: But...I use linux every single day and it's one of the main requirements to be able to do my job?
Company: Yeah whatever no need to get certified still..!
Me: Why didn't you tell me that 3 months ago?
Company: Well the process was changed and we decided this certification does not match your profile
Me: What matches my profile then?
Company: certificates in Azure and GCP
Me: But I don't ever use those platforms?
Company: ......

Just came across this in a website project of my company.... and it goes on for about 5 times of that. But it's not in the html code, guess it comes from some js framework. Not sure if bug in framework or bad code in website.8

TV Show 'Loaded' premieres tonight. Four friends sell their app to a big company. Comedy tonight at 10 p.m. Eastern time. Probably not in the league of Silicon but might be worth a look.1

How do you get new employees?
We have a lack of personnel in our company. We do not receive applications via job advertisements or advertising.
Our company is modern, has good project planning and employees receive company cars. Projects made in react, node, php, java and python.
So, how can we find new employees? Which way are you going?19 -
My react developer tool popped up to tell me that my company slack is using the development build of react not fit for production...1
-
there is a dev in our company who actually does this:
if()
{
}
and not this:
if(){
}
This is unreal.21 -
Yesterday I had another job interview. This time from home via Skype. Today I was blown off. I was not technical enough according to the company.
This company was working with an ancient cms nobody ever heard of and made Sass sound difficult and new.
Good luck in the Stone Age fellow devs. Make sure you upgrade your pc to Windows 7.5 -
Today's interview not went well. Shit, that company instead of paying other online talent test sites, they have their own version. Horrible experience, I never type code in text box.
Worst experience 😣1 -
I have been growing this creepy stache for a month now. I am hoping the "not fitting company culture"-ness of it will steadily attain me work-from-home privileges.
If it does fit the company culture, I am fucked in more ways than one.3 -
2year project got cancelled, not because of covid, not because of budget reason, but because a new politician got elected that is against our company industry.6
-
Why do jobs applications have to ask about the ethnicity? Why does company want to know if I am Hispanic or not!!? I am not offended or anything just want to understand why is it important for them to know it even before an interview could be scheduled?!13
-
f*** my company (80 people) was aquired today by the biggest telecom company in Switzerland. At least we can still work under our own brand more or less independently for now. What drives me crazy is that I land again in the same company where I was in my apprenticeship and have sworn not to return due to the size of the company (20k employees)!4

I'm facing a conundrum. I saw a job posting for <Company A> weeks ago, but wasn't really interested and moved on.
Got in touch with a standalone recruitment company today who had an exciting job offer. The recruiter refused to tell me the name of the company until he spoke to me as they directed him to not disclose the name of the company or any details until he has verified the candidate is genuine. To my absolute shock and disbelief it was <Company A>!!!!
So heres the conundrum. External recruiters don't lie, why would they? Clearly this company MUST keep their hiring top secret, and some poor employee didn't get the memo before posting that job publicly. Should I report the <Company A> employee?
I don't want to report them and get them in trouble, but feel I must in order to help the company fix this leak ... before its too late ... and people find out the are hiring!
Thoughts?5 -
My company have become fucking douche bag! I have been working overtime everyday day till late nights for 2 weeks including one weekend and I got a notice for slow work just because I was not able to work on the second weekend because of health issues. Fuck this insensitive shit company treating employees as a piece of shit!8

Client asks for a Facebook page setup. I find out not only do they have no one to manage the FB page, no one in the company even has a personal FB account.
-
Something I wrote in my "how not to run a company" notebook:
Getting told you've now replaced the CTO as the person people ask for support (literally, he was recieving no questions), but you're not experienced enough to be promoted to senior.
I replied by telling them I was interviewing elsewhere.
Made me laugh. Is it really that hard for management to get that they should invest in talent?6 -
Recruiter:"so I just got off the phone with company X, and they will most likely make you an offer tomorrow, but it's not 100% guaranteed, but I thought I'd let you know"3

Am I the only one who does not like to use the Internal tools of company? In my company they have almost everything made by themselves.
I do not see any benefit for my skills, and above this the documentation sucks.7 -
"I'm a recruiter for this company that does mostly finances. It's a very stable company. It's over a hundred years old."
That sounds nice, but I can't help but wonder the abyss of legacy codebases a company that old can have. Specially since it's not a dev agency.8 -
*me working at a huge company as a customer*
Ok, show me what you got.
* Company throws some of the most gruesome and ugly scripts at me*
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THE WORD INIT SYSTEM? HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THE TERM PRIVILEGE SEPARATION OR BACKUP? DO YOU KNOW THAT A SVN REPO IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE 500GB BIG? AND A JENKINS JOB SHOULD NOT RUN 8HOURS!
Company: you ain't have seen nothing yet.
And they were so right...almost can't bear it anymore3 -
I think this company expects me to do maintenance on this app I built them for free 🙄 not happening you wanted it public that's sign off for the final product not my fault3
-
Company had problematic client projects that each client has a bucket load of change requests. Company doesn't know how to say "No" to them. Company can't afford to pay the subvendors for the changes and the subvendors aren't willing to do them for free.
I went in, reverse engineer the shit out of each application, database, system, documented my own findings, changed according to each client request. This involves editing tables in MSSQL, rerouting PHP files, adding field and validations in C#, passing parameters in VB to Crystal Report, and managed every change request into my own personalize ticket system (that the company does not have).
Saved the company, everyone was grateful. A couple of months later, the company hasn't paid my salary on time, I left like a boss.
They're in shit again and need my help. Haha! -
My goal is to find the motivation to make a MVP for a company idea I have. The chances are low but not non-existent....1

How effective is to have my own webpage where I can show my portfolio for the company recruiters?
Do they really take the time to see the page?
If positive, what host do you recommend?
I'm not in the web dev environment btw, so it's not that obvious.16 -
Its not like I'm jealous ..
honestly I am not paying.. but when I see noob devs getting higher salary in my company .... I just feel frustrated.. Like wtf..1 -
If you suddenly get a connection request on LinkedIn from someone you work with, and their profile finally got updated to their current job, they probably will not be at your company very long.2

This morning I just discovered all our repos are visible to everyone in the company... Not just the team that created them...
We store passwords and certs in our repos....25 -
From my experience you can't really avoid bad companies with 100% success ratio. You can pay attention to the surroundings during an interview, you can research the company online, but in the end whether the company is good or bad is a purely subjective feeling. I think the most important thing is to make sure you don't get too attached to the company either emotionally or legally, so you can just gtfo when you decide it's not right for you.2
-
Uuugh... 'come let's build a standard with in the company'
Two ( and I kid you not) weeks later, we don't get it anymore let's build a new standard4 -

If our company wants to outsource us to other clients then why don't we just resign and directly work there instead!!!!
Seriously we apply here as developers not consultants/analysts/researchers2 -
I wasn't with this company pre-pandemic. The people that were with the company had no idea that they wouldn't be with the company when the pandemic hit, so everything was sort of in a half state when my team was formed and picked it up 2 years later. Not their fault, I get it.
Well...mostly not their fault. Never in the history of good ideas, did anyone ever say "Hey, we should have these 15 variables named Object{number}!" Yes, 15 of them. And they are set `Object3 = object3Variable`. I wish I could make this up, but I can't, and it makes me sad.2 -
The customer support team in my company just put a shit description about the issues and expect the devs to solve it. The screenshot is in a German language that is officially said to be not used in the company yet it is still used. The zendesk has no images or context. Do these customer support think we are magicians?2

GitLab, why do you don't want to have my money? I just wanted to pay for GitLab Bronze to enable Pull Mirroring. The problem is that I cannot register for billing without having a company. GitLab, I am a single private person. I am not a company! Why do I have to fill out these form fields? So if you don't want to have my money, then you will not get it.4

Kinda amazing that dyn does not have DDoS protection...
It is NOT hard to get and for a quite big Company like dyn - it is cheap also3 -
Company is replacing "[insert software tool here]" with one that is "better", that "helps us scale", etc. Coincidentally, this always happens when the management muckety muck in charge of that area is replaced by someone from outside the company. While new ideas are good and sometimes needed, I honestly have not ever seen any manager in that position do anything but a "replace what you have with what I used at my last company" exercise. Every day that goes by lowers my expectations of any management figure or exercise. After 3 decades, you'd think those expectations would be low enough to not be surprised anymore. And yet, that's not the case.1

Any company that ENFORCES you to have a college degree so you can get hired - is a failed company in my eyes and not worth any of my time.
I would not accept to contribute a thing to that company regardless of the salary i would be paid.
Same goes for all and everyone else: if an open source project were to require a contributor to have a college degree so he can contirbute, is a failed project.
ANYONE and ANYTHING who requires a college degree - has already failed.14 -
The website I'm working on went down because of a 500 HTTP error and halted my company of working

The number of roles you are expected to do these at this company, to be paid for just one of them.
Business analyst , developer, tester, first line support, architect, devops engineer, recruiter.
And you have the cheek to ask us what we need to keep this shit alive.
(Obviously it’s more people but the answer to that is no).
Fuck right off.
I do not care if this company doesn’t meet its contractual obligations and goes into administration.
It’s not my company, I can walk into another shit company easily, maybe I’ll even get lucky and find a good one.
Why don’t you people at the top who are being paid six figure salaries and telling everyone things are wonderful pull your fingers out of your collective arses and doing what your paid for.
You fuckers deserve all that is coming. -
Got an offer from another company for a 45% increase after tax, talked with my company and they matched the offer. I shook hands and thought thats that. Talked with the original company and they came back with a 65% increase after tax.. not sure on what to do. Don’t want to seem like an asshole and burn bridges with my current company by leaving, and I’m afraid of the new company and the possible learning curve and inadequacy. Help :(13

I do not represent the company I work for. My rants do not imply only the personal problems of mine but also the problems in general. I represent only myself. Judge me for my words. Don't judge the company that I'm currently at or previously was.
Unless I'm clearly mentioning the specific environment.6 -
Hardly a how, but relatable.
I applied for a job at a genetics company as junior developer (6 months after graduation and no job in that time). I was sadly declined the position so thought why not apply as intermediate developer at the same company and what would you know I got the job. -

I wanted to talk about the right job.
In my previous job I did not feel happy, the management was weird, the salary was low.
For a time I was thinking, I need to get better and do more and I will have a better salary and management will be more lenient towards me.
After a few years, I got an offer to join a much bigger company with a bigger salary and better benefits.
I joined them of course. And it turns out in some places you just do not fit in or the company just wants something that is not realistic and always will be unhappy with you.
In my current company, I have never felt better working, the team is awesome and tasks are challenging but doable, and they appreciate my skills and speed of work.
TL;DR:
If you do not feel good in your company, leave for some other company, most likely it's not you, but its the job that sucks.2 -
Learning aws for months, not enough the company needs to use azure. Learning azure for several months, not enough the company needs to use gcp. Learning gcp for several months, not enough the company needs to use oracle.
When does all of this bullshit ever fucking stop? No matter how much i learn and what i learn it seems like its never good enough. Or its never enough. Its very discouraging. The more i learn the more it appears as if i know nothing16 -

I would rather create a circular inheritance class for my last task before I'm out of the company. And make some changes to the dependency injection module. Leave it blank documentation. So the one who take my position after me would get enough lesson and reason why he's not to join the company.1

NetBeans by far. Small footprint, open source, not owned/managed by mass surveillance company/party and pretty much everything else I expect from a good IDE.
With the Darcula theme of course!12 -
HELL YEAH! First day into the vacation and after checking the mails, I see that I have a new job offer from a company I have applied for. It is not the company with the highest priority on my list, but it is still cool to have them inviting me for a talk that fast.
Btw. I have a question to the experienced job switchers among us (I do not mean job switchers in a bad way).
What do you guys set your priorities on when it comes to joining a company? Do you have any tips for people who want to join a company in a general view? What NO-GOs can you give to us? Thanks.2 -

08:00AM (Monday Only) - Company Meeting
09:00 AM (Daily) - Department Standup Meeting

Two months in my new job, no task assigned to me yet. Not even one. There's been a budget reallocation, and the team just got dissolved. Will probably be moved to a new team (or not?). Part of me enjoys the free time I'm getting (I get to work on my side projects) but it's kind of depressing that I can't prove to the company how much I love building things while at the same time helping the company. 😔4

Went to an interview set up by a recruiter. Company has never heard of them ...or me. Decide to interview me anyway. Surprisingly it did not go well1

Can github (not google) copilot be run on a company server? Or some scaled down version?
I could see this being useful for a version that only parses the code the company wants it to parse. Like an existing codebase. I often find snippets on how to solve something in the existing codebase, but it is usually hit or miss.9 -

So my company says they are paying the market rate, and I should be grateful about it. When I went for interviews at "some big companies", I got offers from 2 different companies with the annual pay x2.5 of what I am getting here.
My current company mentality is so shitty that they only want to hire undergrads or people from oversea so they can pay less.
I do not even know what my fucking role is at this point, I do DevOps, I fucking do infra, I also do SRE shit, then I also write fucking code for servers. Yet my pay is slightly less than just "dev" working at good companies. Fuck my company, I am leaving soon.
I am not the only one in the shit show here, our PM also has to write code because most of our developers left. Most of the time, CTO is not even in the office, the company is basically run by some managements below CTO.6 -
I fucking hate Richard Hendricks. That long nose jack off is not qualified to lead a retarded child to the loo let alone heading a company!2

The company I'm contracted to have just realised they're a tad behind with product delivery after the Development Manager and his second in command left. Leaving two contractors and one junior member of staff to deal with the backlash of "wtf is going on with x product why is it not delivered?".
Company: "Ok we're going to need to do overtime, you guys will be willing to work overtime on weekend and nights, right?"
Me: "What's the rate?"
Company: "It's day rate is that going to be an issue?"
Me: *mutes phone to pmsl*
Company: "We're all up against it so we all have to help out"
Me: "Not interested in a day rate for overtime, thanks"
Company: "Your holiday you have booked in two weeks time, can it be moved?"
Me: *laughs* "No I won't be cancelling my holiday to work"
Company: *salty as fuck now* "Well the question needed to be asked"
Me: "I'm not cancelling a holiday I have paid for to make up for a lack of planning"
I come in the office today and Mr Company has fucked off on a three week holiday!1 -

If your manager does not add undue stress on you even if there is a bug in production, then probably you are working for the right company.3 -
As a following to my previous rant
https://devrant.com/rants/3180332/...
I ended up staying because because the outsourced company(where I’m hired) got called out by the company we’re providing devices for letting me leave and underpaying me
As it it was not enough they also threatened them to stop outsourcing with their company.
At the end I got a 2x salary rise, way better benefits and the promise(still to see) of getting hired directly on the company I’m working in.
So yeah, don’t underestimate your value.3 -
When I will be ready to be transitioned to a promoted developer.
I have been with a company for 2.5 years and nit much development from it. As the review processes are nothing and we are all doing whatever we could and deploying everything to prod.
Now I have changed my company and been a level 1 developer. It's still an entry level role.
I am working towards my promotion but still the as a growth team I am not getting enough chances to work on something good. My design skills are still not good.
What should I do? I have been in this role for a year now. If I want to transition any other company will offer me a level 2 developer role. Should I go into applying for jobs for level 2 when I know that I am not enough? I am afraid that of I waited in my current company I will be stuck for 2 more years here. -
I hate this type of Developer who always asks to add everything as requirement for every single detail. Company is paying you for thinking, or at least asking BA, not only coding requirements in Java/C#/whatever and denying fixes because it was not in requirements.3
-
I love my current job and my company .
Yeah you read it right .
Lemme say why :
Pushes me everyday like the way I wanted .
Keeps me busy but gives me freedom to perform my other interests outside my job.
Appreciates the work I put into.
Pays well.
Not sure about others but I kinda found my FAANG company.3 -
I love that moment in the company when my opinion does not matter about but the time gives the reason to the crazy tech guy that nobody listen in first place4

A certain company:
1) Forbids to run its proprietary operating system on hardware that is not produced by the company itself (BTW sold extremely overpriced). Virtual machines included.
2) Makes laptops with wrong and unusable keyboard layouts.
3) Does not sell any kind of servers that can be mounted on a rack.
Why should any open source project waste resources and time to support it? They should just be left alone with their crappy software and their overpriced hardware.4 -
I don't think that we should "like" or "hate" a company. Because a company is just another construct. Companies (unless specified as non-profit) exist to make money and as such, do not care about human tendencies like compassion or ethics, and certainly does not care if you like or hate it.
If a product is good and is of benefit to me, then I will use it regardless of which company makes it.
Of course, in today's climate, finding "benefit" is really hard. Example: Google's product and services are great, but I'm giving away my data to what is essentially an advertising company.4 -
Its happening right now. Trying to get a project in my company when I am not willing to travel every week. Is it too much to ask for a project based in my home office? Especially with it being the company headquarters.

Working in a small comoany vs big company?
I always found myself in small companies (they are often more flexible with hours and work patterns) - those who worked in both kinds, have you got any preference and the main difference points?10 -
How do you name your servers? or what's you'r company using?
Currently im using <abbreviation><sequence>, But i'm noticing that this does not really scale well.6 -
Who of you actually like the product you work on or the company you work for? today I knew I do when a company I had applied for 7 months ago called me (fashionably late i guess) and i politely said Im happy in my current job and am not interested anymore.5

Start my internship at ‘around 11:00’ today. That’s how it was put by the owner. The company doesn’t have an office so they meet in the home theatre of a mansion twice a week. Across from the indoor basketball court and ping-pong room.
If it’s not a real company, experience still looks good on a resume right?1 -
I feel like I'm living in an unreal world at the moment. People here are actually eager to sometimes leave their job, but I just I had my last day here and the goodbye drinks, and Im actually sad to leave this company.
I was not forced out, but the TLDR is that this company has quite a substantial financial bump a few months back. I literally graduated yesterday, so back then I was like I needed a somewhat stable company to actually start my work life (although I worked for 2 years at this company during school). At the same time this company (which is financially going uphill again) made me a very generous offer to stay, which I did not deny nor accepted because I'm already committed to this new company I'm going to start at this Monday.
Really weird feelings, and I'm truly sad to leave. Especially after having one to one's with my close colleagues who genuinely praised me for my skills, from who I also know that in no way they are influenced by the boss of the company.
Man, I doubt any have been in a similar situation, but is there any advice which could make more confident I made the right decision that I stopped working here?2 -
Why are people shitting on Facebook and not Google or apple or any other major company that sells your data?5

So, today I saw another job offer, but this one says things like "aggressive compensation" and "advanced English required".
The offer itself was *NOT* In English.
It does not speaks highly of a company that they had to resort to recruit in a language that is not the one they want.
And that they are afraid of numbers. -
Non-existant company hierarchy, great brainstorming and constantly getting new ideas, helpful people, and last but not least, great coffee.
-
Leaving a job for a potentially better opportunity after 6 months: OK or no? someone I trust is referring me to their company for a same-level role. they offer 401K match and my current company doesn't. New company does vacation and sick leave and my company is "unlimited" style. have not had an interview yet but I have a good shot given the reference.4

I got a job as Back End Developer in IT company, but in two month i only fix styling and layouting website.
I'am on the right company or not.?4 -
Any Dutch company owners here that have an IBC set up? Or any Italian company owners here? I need some help and advice in setting up a company structure. Although not strictly dev-related I'll of course develop some software for that new company :)
-
Trying very hard not to slam down my shitty monitors in protest.
Was just informed by my manager that all coursework has to be directly related to my present role. Since I am not a developer than my classes will no longer be covered.
Same company that spent 15 grand just for the food at last year's company xmas party.
Even though I have already used my skills to revamp the company intranet, created macros that halved my workload and now able to understand the developer docs for 3rd party software we implement.2 -
FUCK YOU NAGLE AND YOUR DUMB ALGORITHM!!! AND EVERYONE AT WHATEVER COMPANY DECIDED THAT DISABLING IT IS NOT SOMETHING THEY SHOULD IMPLEMENT!! WHAT THE FUCK MAN16
-
Random thought while upgrading schema and manually recreating 100+ rows table; when looking for a job, make sure you look for one where company focuses on employing brainpower, not manpower.. 🤦♂️ 🙄
-
When Eclipse releases a powerfull Project configuration tool with not a single line of helpfull comments and I have to pleasure to add Features for my Company ....6
-
How mush longer do I have to sign into every app I use with 2FA? Not being on the company network is annoying...
THERE'S SO MANY TEXT MESSAGES!!!3 -
Sometimes I find myself convincing myself that I should start working on that old app they asked me to maintain at my company.
Today I am not able to convince myself. Help?!1 -
How many times have u told a company that you will not be moving forward with the interview process bc you accepted an offer... only to have them send you a rejection letter 45 mins later??? 😂😂😂 Happened to me yesterday.
Told 3 companies that.
I didn't really expect them to respond, just wanted to let them know.
First company: No response.
Second company: Wished me well and thanked me for the update.
Third company: Sent me a rejection letter.
I'm like, "You guys just couldn't resist, huh?" 😂5 -
#Warning really long post incoming and not sure if it can be considered a rant
My first job as a dev started 3 months ago and I noticed something strange/funny.
Here's the story our company is a software development one (we are aprox 300 employees), and most of our projects (70% more or less) are for a huge Insurance company in our country, a somewhat normal situation is that the company sends a dev to work full time at the insurance company for 6 months or a year (that usually is a lie and they spend 3 years or more there).
The funny part is this every Dev that is send there is mocked by everyone or receives condolences from the other devs.
I asked why and they just answered me that working as a dev in a really big company whose line of business isn't necessarily software or something related with technology is not a fun experience1 -
how does it feel to reject a company when :
- its in your own hometown and offering remote work (whereas your current company is in a different ,v expensive city and is asking for relocation)
- its offerring a 60% hike on your current salary (whereas your current company is asking to relocate therefore a 40-50% cut in savings)
- is a major mnc with blasting profits and known for never making layoffs (whereas your current company is not even a unicorn)
i just wanted a 70% hije instead of 60 coz i have heard of work stagnation, government job like culture and poor appraisals in this org. however my current company, even though not being a unicorn has shown to offer great salaries ( to sr employees though) so kinda hopeful there too.
but yeah, feeling like a shit who missed opportunity to get bought in gold8 -
Vice President of our company uses "pls" instead of "please" in all of her emails.
Not to mention her writing nonsensical technology terms to clients who sadly believe it.
🙄1 -
the problem with product based company is the business/sales people, when they are not clear about their own product, the amount of re-work comes to n^n!
-
I would recommend to check:
+ The technologies used if it suit to you
+ Make a trial to get into the env.
+ What they provide as advantage (food, flexible time, home-office, etc...)
+ How old is the company (avoid fresh startup and the I have an amazing app idea)
+ The renown of the company on kununu
+ Why not ask some customers how they experience to work with the company -
I am sorry that this is not a rant but i am desperate. For all the londoners, do your company offer internships for a Java developer currently in his second year with the highest marks in all programming modules. Please tell me the company name or any advice on how to apply.2
-
You join a new company and you're faced with loads and loads of abbreviations that only you don't understand. As if I'm not confused enough with with the new codebase and process and everything.
-
Hello guys,
TLDR;
leave a company where I have big influence with less technical challenges for a big company where I am challenged but jus as an individual contributor
I am working for a good company as a DevOps engineer, made a lot of achievements and literally moved the company to a whole new level, however I am working all alone, no mentorship but I get to lead everything and take initiatives
You can imagine the stress working a lone with a big scale in terms of production and other teams that I should support
Have been promised that we will get a team but it has been 15 months and nothing happens
I feel that technical I am not growing enough since I don't have time to improve or any mentorship
Now I am offered a senior position in one of biggest fashion/retail companies in Europe
And I am not sure if I should leave or not, btw it involves relocating1 -
I've done tons of tree and graph interviews lately. Then in the final stage with a Big N company I'm asked something I was totally not in the right head space to answer. Darn.
-
I got a call for interview in a company with glassdoor review 2.5! Big company with stable business!
Should I go? A friend said I should not?
What do you think ladies and gentlemen??2 -
Wow... Today is not my day... Or it might be. Was gonna do some major changes to my company system aaaand evrything is fucked up, now here im working on a brand new system!
-
So a company sent me a "few days/hours" homework assignment (that conveniently uses their exact software stack) before even doing a phone interview. That's not cool, right?1
-
Finally i get to leave my company due to a mass retrenched. Overall i had negative experience.
I mention them in my previous rant.
Now I felt burnout, not feel like doing anything. -
I need a really good excuse to tell a company (which I already signed a contract with) that I'm not going to start working with them7
-
Many years in the same company waiting for an improvement in my career. Result: role change from Solution Manager to ICT consultant (better before) and Salary increase of 20% (better now). I simply do not understand my company behavior. Happy and Sad at the same time. What do you think? Titles do matter or not?
-
I have the luck to visit my company at an exhibition this Saturday and Sunday. Stand number is 404.
What if I stay home and tell them "Sorry, but stand not found" -
How much do you contribute (if at all) to your 401k? My company has no company match, but I am trying to max it out ($19,500 a year). Any reason why not to max it out? In my mid-20s.15

In Africa,
To get a private company job, you need skills, not books.
To get a government job, you Connections to big people, not books or skills .
To get a scholarship for higher studies, you need books.2 -
In 2 days I will be the second oldest employee in the company, not by age, but by the time I've been here. How fun.6
-
I'm currently making an internship at a medical software company and today i found this gem in a js file:
/*
the server does not check if the element was deleted or not; it will return success, no matter what; **it's not a bug, it's a feature**
*/ -
Our company moved to new place....and its more like "big market" rather then development center...not sure how to cope up with this.... :(
-
- C-Suite: What the fuck this is not at all what I needed!! My whole company is on collision course with a liquidity crisis. You fucking idiot what did you do I’m so stressed oh noo
- This twat: I don’t ask questions to not stress you out3 -
Another company wide meeting full of BJs, but not a single mention.
I'll get back into my dark corner and be quiet.5 -
In the previous company I've worked, we've had about one customer every 1-2 months that had his WorstPress website hacked.
It's a horrible CMS and there is no argument that could convince me otherwise, not even bribery.
Luckily enough for WP, it's not the worst CMS I've encountered... that award goes by far to "The CMS Of Doom™" (name changed to not dox the incompetent company that created it). Fucking bastards. -
I'm currently doing my college internship at a company where the working hours are from 8 am till 5 pm. I was suprised by the hours because it feels so long. I was wondering what hour do you guys work and does every company use these hours? I live in Belgium. I'm not sure how it is in other countries. Thanks!5
-
I feel sad been working on this small company of mine for couple of months now, trying to look for something to actually do ...and today all those working for me speaks as if they do not understand what the company is all about yet ....as in no progress I think
www.himago.xyz
Some advice...😔😞
Cos I'm also confused1 -
The Senior Director of Engg of a company does not know what MEAN stack is.. Some ridiculous facts about Tech Industry!3
-
Just started on an IT company as my first job and I trully like it, But I believe that this is not what I am looking for in my career. The company is too big and I have the feeilng that growing is going to be hard in here.
I am thinking about applying for a systems and software engineering company, I know it won't be easy to get hired but I need to try.
Any advice on it?1 -
Company had to do some layoffs here and there. Good I’m not affected. Still a Merry Christmas for me.2
-
Why the fuck do I have to use a shitty Thinkpad with a crippled i5? It's at times like these that I miss my own i7 laptop... Even the screen on this is shitty. I asked if I can use my laptop and apparently it would have to meet some requirements. But if it was a MacBook, it would be A-Ok, totally fine! That's such fucking bullshit!!
-
"The employee handbook has gone paperless starting this year to help the environment! Please print out the acknowledgement form and deliver to HR that you acknowledge receiving the enclosed PDF of the handbook."2
-
Just curious, if you company had 3 system outages due to architecture with over 5 days of intermittence + a bunch of smaller downtimes ONLY in 2021 would they promote the guy in charge?
Because maybe I’m the weird one and not the company itself.3 -
You know you completely fucked up as a company, when your self-developed CMS is one huge unmaintainable hack and without any structure at fucking all.
It's just mindboggling how even such a complete mess can "attract" customers.
EXTREME STONKS 📈📈📈📈
(thankfully I am not related to that particular company which shall remain unnamed)2 -
I switched jobs and saw new office today. Also found out that this branch has 10 recruiters. This is outsourcing company, not recruiting company. Why the hell they need 10 recruiters in office that has capacity for 70 employees wtf...2
-
scrum my ass! the whole company(especially the marketing) must be aware and agree with this methodology and not only the devs.5
-
Our new coming tech VP does not know how to SSH with a pem file. He cannot fix the permission issue even after shell clearly tells him so. What is wrong with my company ><2
-
company i work at was able to go public, and get listed on Nasdaq. i struggle to understand what that means for me. is anything gonna change? any advice?
i also find it baffling how u can be a public company and not give ur employees bonuses or raises for 3 years straight...1 -
In my attempts to find a company not run by you people I came across the worst parents in history.
betcha you'll all rush to hire him.19 -
My company relies on Excel waaaaay to much. Everything is done with Excel and VBA (it's not dev company) so I'm "forced" to develop complex system that requires database and serious coding. Worst part, they probably won't pay me anything :/
