So, this random teen on subway asked me if it was 9GAG I was scrolling [i was on this app ofc]. I said it's better than 9GAG.
He went on like this "oh cool, does it have the the NSFW section too?"
...
Me: a...No, but can learn coding stuff
Him: hacking?
Me: hacking is not what you thin... [He interrupted me]
Him: Damn cool, I wanna learn hacking, it's my stop nice meeting you tell me the name of the app
Me: a...9...ha...ck, 9hack!
Him: cool, thanks. [Gets off]

Girlfriend (art student): “You’re in CS. Why don’t you use Windows? Macs are terrible for programming.”
Me: “macOS is better for doing command line compilation and shit because it supports Unix terminal commands and stuff with a reliable OS that’s better-supported than most Linux OSes. I also have Windows on my laptop too, for Visual Studio.”
Girlfriend: “Only like 1% of people use command line stuff. Windows is better for programming. I’ve seen a lot of CS majors use Windows.”
Me: “Uh. You watch me use my computer every day. The stuff I do in Terminal takes forever on Windows.”
Girlfriend: “Yeah, but Windows is just better for programming though.”

Boss: We are using Angular 1 in our project, right?
Me: AngularJS, yeah, we are using it.
Boss: I heard they have AngularJS 4 now and it's faster and better.
Me: Angular, yeah that's much better.
Boss: So shouldn't we upgrade it? Can you do it this week?
Me: Erm... It's gonna take more than a week.
Boss: How much time do you need?
Me: 6 months, at least.
Boss: What if I put one more guy with you on this? How much time will it take then?
Me: Let me rephrase. It's gonna take 6 months for the entire team to upgrade all the modules in our product to Angular 4. Not including the time to train everyone on Angular and TypeScript.
Boss: Oh, Angular 1 is suddenly seemed to me a better option now.
Me: Smart move 😉11 -
Boss - gives tasks to me. Timeline: 10 days.
Me - work hard and finish the solution in 3 days.
Boss- wtf is this. Do it properly.
Me - chills for 15 days. Submit the same earlier solution after that.
Boss - yes this looks nice now! Much better than your earlier work!
Me - dude seriously what kind of stuff do you smoke before coming to work?8 -
My wife is getting better and better each day writing code. And she is starting to really love the terminal too!
With this rate, she is going to know more GNU+Linux than me.

"Windows is better than Java".
A classmate literally screamed that out in class.
He'd heard me often bash Windows, I was just in the middle of a friendly debate about Java with the professor, so in a desperate attempt to get attention, his brain concocted this diarrhea of a sentence. And he doesn't even know how stupid what he said was.15 -
I met my girlfriend due to code.
There were these free courses for competitive programming as a preparation for the informatics olympiad and we got along and made weird programs and had a great time. Most of the other people there were much younger than us, and in the actual finals she ended up beating me by quite a bit, yet she still dares to say I am a better programmer.
It's been almost a year since then. Wow20 -
Exp. that made me doubt my skills?
My non programming sister managed to find a bug I was looking for...
I couldn't find the problem for hours and she just looks at the screen and goes "That looks odd!"8 -
Customer: why 1 router cost so much? I can buy 3 normal routers with that.
Me: this has security features and functions that 3 of those routers put together combined could not do. Then you will still need to buy firewall for security. Why have more devices and have more possible points of failure when u can have 1?
Customer *keeps quiet*
Me: numbers is not important. Having 5 normal parachutes during skydiving doesnt guarantee u better safety than 1 good reliable parachute.
My company earned $700 profit for that sale today. 😂5 -
My first boss. He sat next to me yelling “Think before you code“, “Hands away from the keyboard“ and stuff like that at me while doing my first few codings ever. He even made me cry from the pressure. Afterwards he bought me a muffin and told me he wants me to be a better programmer than he ever was14

Client: Glad to have you on the team, you come highly recommended for your experience in Microsoft technology, specifically asp.net
Me: I was contacted for a php, mariadb project
Client: well they're all the same
Me: actually sir no.... No they're not.
Client: then why was I told to contact you
Me: you tell me, your hiring manager contacted me for a php project not asp or. Net
Client: well I guess I know who to blame for your, sorry for taking your time. Can I contact you if we have a project made with that thing you mentioned?
Me: php?, Sure
Client: nice...... Take care
Me: you too
That went better than I expected3 -

Saw my uncle using Microsoft Edge today.
Me: Uncle, you should use Chrome or Firefox. They are better.
Uncle: Windows 10 showed a pop up few days back that chrome drains battery faster. So I uninstalled chrome.
Me: But Windows is fooling you to use its product. Edge is horrible and useless.
Uncle: So you think you are smarter than Windows people? Are they idiots who designed this whole software?
Microsoft u got 1 more Edge user. Enjoy, you lying and misleading company.28 -
I am starting to get more pissed off than I should be by one particular type of rant on here.
Quote:
My boss/senior/coworker did not know how to do XXX even though he is supposed to have more experience than me. I had to fix his goddamn problem blah blah blah.
If you'd have that attitude on my team I'd be spending a lot of time trying to get you off of it. A team MUST help each other. If you think you're better than others you either teach them or get the fuck out. If you don't understand or know something that's fine and it perfectly normal to have others explain it to you.9 -
just finished installing Netscape 7.0 on my Win 10 machine. works surprisingly better than Edge. way better... when Netscape asked me to become the default browser I had to say yes.8

Friend: Hey did you saw this neural network which can solve captchas?
Me: No, does that even exist?
Friend: Yes, its awesome, isn't it?
Me: Yeah, awesome...
Inner Me: Now machines are already better at solving captchas than me :/3 -
I used to sit next to my friend Mira in class. I did all the homeworks and extra homeworks, she didn't. I had better grades in intermediate exams. When the final grade came, I had a grade lower than hers.
When the next semester started, I met that professor again. He called me Mira! 😡3 -

Just got the most introspective job interview ever.
Like, I think those guys now understand me better than my parents do.
Like, I learnt more about myself during this interview process than during my psychological evaluation.
Like, I changed my career plan twice during the interview process.
I don't know who I am anymore but I wanna work with those guys8 -
Designer - *showing an animation made with after effects* Lets add this really cool animation in our website
Me - Actually that will be very difficult with plain CSS. We will have to use some heavy animation libraries, and we don’t have that much time for the project.
*next day*
Designer - Found a better animation
*shows another animation*
Me - *awkwardly* This is more difficult to implement than the previous one
*next day*
Designer - What about this one
*shows yet another difficult animation*
Me - *ashamed and questioning my skills* ummm....
Designer - you know what, just add fade-in-out7 -
Firefox Quantum is the only software in beta stage I know of, that is more stable than the release one. I have to admit that I am somewhat of a fanboy when it comes to Firefox since I have been using it for the past 12 years. I never admitted it's quirks even though I secretly knew chrome had a better performance and stability lately. This rebirth gives me so much hope! YES! Firefox is not dieing!8

I officially cut ties with all my family.
Shitty, cringy, egoist people to ever exist.
They treat me like shit. Just use me as their slave all the time and when anything goes wrong, blame me for everything.
I consider you all my family now. Though we are virtual friends but you guys are better than real family.24 -

Thank you to all the mentors out there! My mentor has the patience of a saint and really helps me understanding everything much better.

I FUCKING hate companies/startups/ANY WORK ENTITY that doesn't respond to job/internship applications , i don't care if it's a yes or a "your application is shitty and you are a shitty applier and there's thousands of appliers better than you" at least give me something to carry on with my internship search .
Even more hated are those who respond with a plethora of tests and don't answer back with results when you do them .7 -
*In TeamSpeak with 4 of my friends*
Them: Hey, why don't you join our GTA Session?
Me: Ehh uhm...(Not answering)
Them: Hello?
Me: No, I can't right now. I'll join later.
*A few hours later*
Them: Are you joining??
Me: No, later.
Them: Right, so never then?
Me: 🙃
I never played GTA today, instead I continued to work on my C/Gtk+ application. Way better than any game 😁
Also, my friends think I'm boring, and I don't understand why... 😂7 -
Me: I've been using ubuntu with i3 for 6 months. Is awesome. Everything works great.
Brain: Have you seen debian or arch linux. They're better than ubuntu. Just try' em
Me: Brain shut up. I don't have time to reinstall everything + I'll 100% fuck my pc up. I'll do it another time.
Brain: Trust me. I know what's better for you. Try it now
Me: No.
Brain: Pleeeeease.
Me: Ok fine.
Me: Now windows doesn't work, debian doesn't work. I need to format my hard drive and do this shit all over again.
Brain: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Hey. Install arch linux.9 -
1. Enter site
*YOU MUST DISABLE UR ADBLOCK TO USE THIS SITE*
2. Exit site
You think you're gonna fuck with me and force me to waste my time disabling adblock refreshing the site so i can browse your shitty site? No I'll just go ahead and open the next website that provides the same information and better yet doesn't force me to disable my adblock. Finding alternative site with same information like yours is abundant and much faster than me wasting my time disabling adblock. Fuck you6 -
It's so annoying! One of the developers just started explaining to me some of the recent changes in the infrastructure. I made these changes! I know about them and can explain them better than he did. I tried telling him that I already know but he just wouldn't stop. It felt like he was mansplaining. I don't usually get that at work so it was weird and frustrating.11

My family didn't support me. In fact, my own father told me I'd never learn to code. I do many things out of pure spite, one of them: pursue a master's degree in computer science to prove an old man wrong.
On my third semester of my bachelor's I was already a better developer than he will ever be 🙄3 -
Jr: I'm having a problem with my environment, can you help me?
Me: Sure! Did you switch to the latest Ubuntu LTS
so that your environment matches the rest of the dev team like you were asked to do the last 3 times?
Jr: No, I like Windows better because linux is too complicated. Can you just figure out how my environment is suppose to work and than fix what I did wrong please?
Me: No. Let me know if you ever need help with the our standard dev environment. Good luck!24 -
Coworker: "Look our WebApp loads much faster in Chrome (0.8s) than in Firefox (4.6s). This clearly shows that Chrome has the better JS-Engine"

We used to use Trello for our team boards and was starting to transition to Gitlab's issues for better code integration...
I became aware that my boss was being "demanded" to have a better analytics of our team performance so I started digging more insightful issue/tasks software like YouTrack ( Jetbrains ) and Jira ( Atlasian ).
After 2 months of trial and learning I suggested we go with YouTrack.
"We" are now using it for about 6 months already and it is a fucking mess.
My peers have no clue how to scrum, even after my efforts to teach them and they even spent a fucking 3 days workshop about it on fucking Google (!?!?) without me ( there is a rant about it ).
My boss is a nice person but the dude lacks any trace of competence to manage anyone other than him.
I'm tired of babysitting a man that is 10 years older than me and has a car that costs almost 10x mine.
I'm two days back from vacation and I almost rage quited 5 times.3 -

HOW FUCKING HARD CAN IT BE TO NOT STORE PASSWORDS IN CLEARTEXT AND THEN PROCEED TO SEND ME AN UNENCRYPTED EMAIL WITH THE PASSWORD IN IT??? Sorry abt that. But for real, mytrendphone stores passwords in plain texts and waves a fucking safety certificate in your face...13 -
Client: it's very important that we go live with the app's sign up process.
Me: ...but the mobile apps aren't complete yet.
Client: Yes, but marketing says we need to start getting downloads and sign-ups so we get better ratings than our competitors.
Me: ...but the user won't be able to do anything.
Client: We'll add the rest later when we have users!5 -
Why do people hate windows 10? Granted I'm not super picky about my OS but windows 10 works just fine for me, and looks better than win7 imho.16

I've lost my gf (she said she wouldn't want to be with a programmer, I said 'sure, bye') and found a much better and more fun career path than I had before.
Otherwise my life stayed pretty much intact, except for the fckn compile time errors and occasional 'fix my electronic device' or 'hack this social media account for me' requests. In retrospect it was more than worth it, would switch to be a professional developer anytime again.11 -
“Get the code working first, then worry about how to clean and optimize it.”
For me when I learnt about optimization and how one thing was better than something else, I tended to focus on that. I’d have a picture of that in my mind, and would try to write as clean of code with less hacks in the middle and as optimized as I could in the first go, which slowed me the way fuck down.
After he said that to me, I realized I was stupid and just wasting time if I worried about that from the start. Would waste time, and just cause more headaches from the start than it was worth.
——
Oh also another one, I knew never to trust the client from the start but the way he said it was funny. “Never ever trust the fucking client, don’t trust them with anything. I trust Satan more than I trust the client.” 😂7 -

Interviewed a guy for a senior technical job. I worked hard on making my own questions that hopefully make the interviewee think instead of useless gotchas.
He told me at the end that they were fun questions and this interview was loads better than the rest who just ask questions off of Google.
Having had my share of shitty interviews, this makes me feel so good 😊11 -
Me: 15 years of experience in AWS, DevOps, Architecture, and Security. Current title: "Senior DevOps Manager"
Recruiter: "There are a lot of opportunities, but this one caught my eye, and I thought you'd be interested... Junior Frontend Developer"
If you want to do your job, at least do it half way well. Recruiters can suck, but most are better than that.2 -
Mini rant ahead:
So just wanted to get something off of my chest in relation to something that continues to prop up constantly in the OSS community.
OSS is not better than proprietary software and proprietary software is not greater than OSS.
Sick of seeing people complain when they see someone using proprietary software like google chrome and the like in comparison to open source alternatives.
We understand that the freedom offered by OSS is clearly better but we should not 'hate' or 'actively avoid' proprietary software.
Key example for me personally is that I use Gamemaker Studio 2 to develop my games and the amount of people who keep negatively branding that choice and tell me to use Godot because it is 'better' and 'open source'
People just really need to respect other peoples choices, if you have something to say on the matter when you see someone using something you may not agree with, sure say your opinion, but don't defend it and go on the attack because other people use differently licensed software.
* And end scene *28 -
Some people think that in the software industry there is no communication and everyone is glued to their screens doing their work. It really fucking pisses me off.
- We write documentation around our code more than actual code so that we can communicate with other developers better.
- We use version control and pull requests to make sure our work is at the required level and it is approved.
- We invented UML to communicate our technical understanding to less technical people.
- We sometimes have more client meetings than doctors have patients. In which we have deal with clients worse than patients.
- We conduct keynotes and conferences and hackathons to bring together communities.
These are just a few things from the top of my head so next time you think of saying that the IT or software professionals don't have "much" communication you better fucking educate yourself as to what the profession actually is.3 -
Me and my classmate working on the same problem but on different machines.
Him: Hey, how to create a file by terminal?
Me: touch space filename.
Him: Hey, how to open file?
Me: vi space filename
Him: How to do this? How to do that?
Me: Do this. Do that.
After sometime,
Him: Hahahaha... I solved the problem faster than you... You are so slow. I am better.
Me: 😒👺👿2 -
And so I have ranted earlier about how a panelist during my thesis defense told me that my algorithm is not an algorithm because it needs mathematical equations to be called an algorithm. I also told you guys that I facepalmed during the course of the interrogation.
Now I failed my thesis because I facepalmed. I quit school because of that but now I'm a better career person than him. I already started my freelance team and earning more than double his salary and he's still suck at being a low quality professor.7 -
A: Done job for today.
B: Let me check your code.
A: Sure.
B: Only 6 lines of code in a day?
A: Yup, 6 line of code is better than 1000 thousand line that can do the same thing.
B: 😑😑😑 -
Another smartass! Here we go!
Look, I'm an idiot and I'm absolutely aware of it. But you don't get to give an opinion without having the knowledge or skills. I may be young-ish and stupid, but that doesn't mean you're right, or that you know better than me ffs. If I'm down to earth, that doesn't mean you're above me. If you want my respect, then behave yourself. Just because you think you've "schooled me"...doesn't mean you did.
... Aaaaaand those are stuff I'll never say in real life. Gah. I can't lecture people I don't care about, but some do piss me off regardless. And what is with this sharp increase of people pissing me off these day? 🤔 🤔 🤔5 -
Someone once told me that 32-bit operating systems were better than 64-bit ones because the pointers are half the size.
*confused thinking face*16 -
I've never been a fan of "wireless" technologies.
Whether it's a keyboard, mouse, gamepad. Nope none of it. The latency, need to change batteries (if any), chances of putting the accessories in places other than your gaming desk thus creating clutter around your house.
And earphones, HOLY CRAP. You cannot convince me that any sort of Bluetooth earphones have better sound quality than my wired 3.5mm Sennheiser earphones.
I'd rather take wires and get quality content consumption over Bluetooth/Wireless for a little "convenience".13 -
So I'm feeling a lot better today than I did yesterday. This shit's finally starting to give me some peace.
In the middle of my (first) morning cup of coffee, feeling pretty good about life for once. So I figured..why not do a face reveal?
This picture was like 5 months ago, but the only difference in how I look now is my hair being a bit longer13 -
Do you know this?
You are the small guy, you are dancing the whole evening with a girl and then a big asshole comes around, h
Judges you and want to be better that you?
Than je comes and insult you?
Damn that's the moment, when self defense save your life. :)
He tried to punch me, but then underrated my skills 😌
Ohhh man I love karma😌🤗7 -

Hiring for my startup right now and this guy decided he's better than what we can provide.
Guy has maybe 6 or 7 years of college, "walked away from" a doctorate, whatever that means, and what looks like 2.5 years at a previous startup, 1 month as a freelancer on web development. But look out! He's beyond startups now.

Was cleaning up some of the old files on my system and found the first ever raycast program I had written.. in c++
This was during a time im pretty sure all of you guys just like me learnt the things that you could possibly do using code.
The experience of the first time I ran this and saw the sprites appear was the awe all of us have experienced in our own ways.
The reason I found this picture interesting is many of us end up losing the wonder and sense of excitement that got us into development in first place.
Go back , clean up your drives .. find your old code. I'm sure there is no better feeling than looking at the past you , writing bad code , with a probably bad language on a bad editor with sleepless nights to get nothing more than the output we wanted.
It's amazing when you realise everything is better when it's simple. -
My first rant...
Every time a coworker asks for an enhancement, the request is followed by "it should be easy to implement".
1) If you think it's easy, then you obviously know the code better than me, right?
2) The idea of the enhancement may be easy, but you don't think about how a small change can have a cascading effect throughout the entire process... and potentially in a catastrophic way.
Happens every time. Maybe I'm just bitch eating crackers at this point, but it annoys me when people analyze something they have no idea how to write themselves.5 -
Microsoft's business suite is much better than Google's business suite.
If not for Google's monopoly in consumer market, MS would have easily taken over the consumer space as well. No wonder this company is acing their game in B2B space.
I can see myself migrating to MS ecosystem because fuck YouTube and Google Maps. MS has everything better now.
You know what MS did right?
They heard herd.
And this is what annoys me about Google. A company arrogant and adamant in their own approach that they even refuse to acknowledge a user's existence.6 -
It has been a rough day dealing with third party vendors, who only have a few IQ points to share among the company. Nothing better to cheer me up than listening to my favourite Christmas song2

Anyone else taking Harvard's CS50 via edX? It's so awesome! You get a better understanding of Computer Science and stuff. I'm loving C! It feels so close to communicating with the machine. Memory allocation fascinates me, too. Is this why it's fast? If you feel like you're lacking with the CS fundamentals although you can build apps or websites already, I recommend this. This is better than my whole years in college!9

I love materializecss.com .. I love the concept and I don't know why, but I like it ways better than bootstrap. Materialize looks kinda fresh to me - not the classic Material Design. Aaaaaand it's very easy to work with it.5

When your manager who claims to be a Wordpress "developer" says to you oh my God, why are you using notepad to write the page when there is an editor?
My response, because I am a developer. I write code and I can write better HTML than any editor can. I then said I do add editors for my projects where required, not for me, but for the end users that cannot write HTML. He walked away 😂15 -
It has sated my hunger for never-ending knowledge.
It allows me to freely express myself.
It has given me the goal to surpass all these people who are better than me.
Also unlimited anger that can end me up behind bars. -
Dear Swift, we have to break up. I’ve found a new language to love. Oh don’t act so surprised, you know our relationship was on shaky ground. You never let me have any fun. You’re always telling me what to do and how to do it and I’ve had enough. You treat me like a child, and I’m moving on.
Things were good in the beginning, and you may have impressed me with your automatic reference counting, but my new language can do that too, and so much more, and does it faster than you could ever imagine. You see unlike you, my new language doesn’t boss me around. It *trusts* me, Swift. That’s the one thing you never could understand. I need to be trusted; and know that I can trust in you.
Well I can’t. Not anymore, Swift. It’s over. My new language just treats me better than you ever could. I’m sorry it came to this but I deserve better than you Swift. We’ve both known this for a long time.
I wish you the best, but you probably shouldn’t call.
I’m with Rust now.1 -
Agreed on an offer from company X... Told them I'd sign the contract on my first working day, still a week away.
The offer had a lower salary than my previous job, I needed to relocate, and travel costs were not covered. It was a step back for me but I really needed a new job.
After the weekend I got an invitation for another interview... All went well and the perks were better than the offer made by company X.
Next day I had the second interview and they were very excited and offered me a contract.
Contract came in on friday, signed it and called company X that I'd like to reject the position after reconsidering my options...
Boy were they pissed off 😂 -

A few days ago, one could have said that C++ is giving me PTSD.
Now, I've come to adore, cherish and love it for it's simplicity.
It feels so much better than Java.
No shit on java, it's good in what it does but damn boi C++ can do like, fucking everything.
Probably still gonna gib me PTSD in a week or so but fuck it.13 -
I am a fucking software developer and not an IT guy, I write code and if the fucking printer is not connecting, throw it out of the window, that's way better than calling me for help, because one day, I'll do that, and you'll regret...3
-
Non Technical Friend - Bro Apple is the shit!! I'm getting a Macbook.
Me - How's it better than other laptops for you?
Friends - It looks the best .. It's Apple bro!
💢
.. Ok. Enjoy 😐8 -
Senior developer just showed me a "competitor" that seems to do things waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than us on his web site and was telling me:
Senior: damn, I wish I could figure out how they do this. I've been trying for so long...
I write the URL on chrome with dev tools open and literally the first thing that comes on the console is a nice greeting from their devs with links to they github repositories, ends up they are open source...
And now I'm here thinking "WTF!!!! WHY ARE WE NOT DOING THINGS THIS WAY?"3 -
"Microsoft team foundation" is my current motivation for keeping me wake up in the morning. This is just a small part in their header menu. You can do better than this!
-
Main language, do people have such a thing? Some quixotic shit about various languages I use:
C#: Microsoft
F#: never quite committing to 100% functional paradigms while still being one of the most enjoyable langs I use
Java: null handling via optional and maybes are ugly, but better than it was
C++: surprisingly functional in 2020
Haskell: no one else seems to ❤️ it, despite it being fucking beautiful
Kotlin: Ternary warfare, Czech sports opinions on how languages should work
Clojure: parenthetical scoping makes me far happier than it should
Typescript: makes ever more sense as it changes7 -
For me, nothing is better than getting home after a long day, put a pizza in the oven, get a beer from the fridge and just sit back and do nothing for a little bit.2
-
Disclaimer: I apologise in advance for those tired of language wars, if it bugs you that much just skip this rant.
"C++ is better than C"
An accepted truth. OO is better than Procedural, C++ is an upgrade from C, it fixed all the problems.
End of.
Except - when it comes to actual evidence, empirical studies have shown that there are no productivity gains with C++ vs C.
This bugs me the most because it's such a fringe view, OO has dominated industry purely by dogma, alternative programming paradigms are just simply ignored because: "OO is best. End of."

That guy who thinks he know exactly what I'm doing better than me... Oh, you meant a different type of tool.

Got my first rejection after my first job interview via e-Mail today. It was about a local webhosting company.
I feel a little bit sad about it, but I am glad that I have made this experience with them and hope that I can use this experience to better myself in future job interviews.
What bothers me the most is that they told me in the mail that they are sad to send that rejection mail to a friendly and warm person like me, but they do not give a clean explanation why they had to reject me.
Was it because of someone better than me? Am I not qualified enough? What is the reason ffs?
I have send them a mail back mentioning that I am thankful for the conversation we have had, but also asking for the reason of the rejection.
I do not think that they will reply me back, but I hope they will.5 -
Worked at a big company as firmware dev a few years ago (less than 2) but switched cause of bad pay. Joined a consulting firm with better pay and bemefits. In 2 weeks I am going back to the old company but as a consultat... they should have just payed me and we could have avoided this :D1
-
I had 5 round of detailed technical interviews on java, springboot, React and Google Cloud.
Finally it seems they are going to make me an offer.
Last conversation was with the team I should work with.
They use dot.net, AWS and maybe maybe some angular.
I wann cry.
I'll say yes anyway.
Maybe the idea is to get some new perspective from me?
Or they want to be sure they will be better than me?
Or otherwise, fuck them?5 -
Any devrant-ers at the Kansas City Developer's Conference (kcdc) right now? Right now = July 12th & 13th, 2018.
If you see me, I'm that guy who just grabbed a handful of life saver mints at the vendor booth. Yea...*that* guy.
Rant? Only thing so far is the heat (air conditioning can't keep up with the outside) and breakfast (see attached). I guess some people call that breakfast, but I suppose its better than nothing. -
took me about 6+ months to accept that relational database is better than blockchain. But since i am doing project involving -smartcontract- now, theres nothing i can do but to tell some people that blockchain is a good thing. please forgive me for spreading this technology... after i finish this project, i promise to never step on blockchain environment again4

I hate touching my keyboard when I eat... I usually put some video to watch and start eating. But every single time it goes like this:
Me: "Finally finish that piece of code, time to cook some food!"
*After cooking and back in front of my screen ready to enjoy the next episode of my favorite show*
Brain: "Wtf are you doing! You have better things to do than watching this garbage! Like implementing all 101 improvements you thought about while cooking!" -
Coworker Asks me for every little thing in the code 😑
He literally keeps asking me until I've written all the code for him and this goes on all day.
I really don't have a problem with helping him but he literally doesn't know anything (even the basic stuff) and is just getting code from other people and when I went on a holiday (3 days) he didn't do anything like literally no progress at all.
And yet he still gets paid more than me because I'm still a student 😥
Honestly I'm so done with this bullshit and I can't even get a job at a big company because apparently students are not dependable at all even if I do a better job than most devs who are 'years count' people where they barely knew anything and just do the job out of habit...15 -
my cousin wants to buy a new phone and asked for advice. (with advice I mean saying what he wants and hoping I agree)
*talks about lumia 930.
me: you won't be able to use these apps x,y,z......
him: why not it has better specs than mine. bla bla.... you will see.
week later
him: phone doesn't have Play Store installed. can you do it?5 -
Arguing with a co worker.... he is writing a serial data plotter, and wants me to send the data as text. I’m like ugh no I’m not wasting bandwidth for text data, you are getting it as binary, as my embedded system has a lot of other stuff todo than send debug info, so the quicker I get the data to you the better... plus his program is running on a pc there is no issue regarding resources handling binary data.
He tells me I’m am wrong, and is trying to defend his stance, then all the electrical engineers and other software engineers all stand up and said why in the hell would it be faster to send text than binary? He has no response.23 -
Hardest thing about software development to me is estimation of time needed to complete. There should be an algorithm that knows to estimate better than me, shouldn't it? Like google maps navigation knows precisely in advance when I will arrive somewhere taking a car or a train, perhaps they could do my development estimates for me?9
-
Dead to the world for a while and I'm back to bitch about how hard it is to come up with a thesis project. Woe is me, hope you're all having a better Thursday than I am9
-
Sometimes at the end of the day if a solution to a problem seems inefficient I just leave the task rather than writing buggy code. It gives me a day's time, away from the screen, to come up with much better and elegant solution which I eventually code up the next day.
After years of experience I have realised that its better to wait for a day and not write inefficient code rather than trying to fix a hell lot of bugs later.4 -
The blocking feature is working nicely for me :D i love not reading the absolute horseshit posted by attention seeking fucktards that have nothing better to do than to be loud and whiny for extarnal shit.
:D
I was about to announce that I would do that shit for free(again) :D6 -
Being the dumbest smart person is way better than being the smartest dumb person. Here is looking at anyone ever trying to tell me how to do my job yet you cannot read a fucking error messag. Yes incorrect password means you got it wrong, dim witted cunt

Was delaying learning a course for quite a long time (felt boring). The finally got the stuff by reading the documentations !
Tell me I am not the only one who thinks reading documentations is way better than taking course (in case of proper documentation ofcourse)2 -
Me and the CEO of my company are both in the same clan in clash of clan.
I've never worked for a cooler guy. And funny enough he is much much much better than me. He has been playing for like 4 years.
When I started writing this 2 weeks ago (yes I forgot about this) he was working with us, he resigned in the meantime.
I just did the same, Today.
So, I guess best ex-ceo for a probably best ex-employee.
😕😕😕😢😢😢😕😕😕7 -
on dev rant, "web idiots" = people who are way better than me at web dev. they're better than me at that so therefore they are bad. me monkey brain feel safe. ooga booga!
this site should just be called InsecureRant11 -
Client: "We need a quote for a website build."
Me: "OK. What kind of website?"
Client: "We are working on a brief now, but we need a cost ASAP."
Me: "Alright. It should cost between $X and $Y. Dependent on the brief."
Client: "We can't go back with a range. We need a set price."
Me: "Well, give me a solid Functional Specification, and I'll give you a price based on that."
Client gave me a Func Spec. I gave them a price. Then they gave me change after change after change...
But they refused to pay more than the initial fixed price. By the end of it, I would have been better off working at McDonalds.4 -
The older I get and the more perspective I have on my career, the more I cringe at the times I thought I was awesome but I really wasn’t, especially in the eyes of or in comparison to others I’ve worked with who were much better at this than I am. In that respect, I have very few stories that _aren’t_ embarrassing. I sometimes wonder how I managed to stay employed this long. And whether any stories here on DevRant are about me.
-
I will never understand people who voluntarily interview for a well-paid position while making off the cuff negative comments and generally sounding like an absolute arse the whole way through. Do you really feel like your "look at me I'm a tough guy" attitude is going to achieve anything more than your application being tossed in the bin?!
Yes, you knew your stuff brilliantly. Probably way better than I do in many areas. But damn, I wouldn't want to spend 5 minutes working alongside you.11 -
As a dev, I think nothing have made me better prepared or equipped for explaining technical issues and functionality to PMs and board members than having kids and explaining things on their level.
-
Turns out a massive dev team saw that i tracked down the makers of the PoC PS3 N64 emulator and (successfully) asked for them to release their source and they stole my fucking summer project for themselves. I mean, that's how open-source works, and they'd do a way better job than me, but for fucks sake...5
-
Happy birthday to my self. Away from my family and friends, alone in the city alone in the office pushing keys on keyboard to deliver the project.
It's been very difficult year for me, both physically and mentally.
I hope next year will be better than this.
Fuck you 2019.
PS: birthday and end year selfish.12 -
Got talked into watching Demolition Man today.
Corny jokes, lousy shots, all the things that made me realise that 90s movies are sooo much better than 19 movies -
Why is the internet such a toxic place... You voice your personal opinion and instantly have people who believe they are 'better' than you call you a stupid consumer because they use something that others may not care for.
Fuck me people, why can't we just have opinions and respect each other, it's not that fucking hard!7 -
My friend who constantly keeps messaging me to switch to windows:
WINDOWS GRAPHICS IS BETTER THAN UR LOONIX HEHEHE FUCC UR OPINION LMAO
le me: can ssh to my linux machine from anywhere and it can handle over 1000 users simultaneously and if one Xorg client on the main machine dies, we can just close it and open another. while their windows' whole graphics crashes if there's too much load on their graphics. We even played minecraft on the main machine lol, while other devs were connected to it.10 -
Pirated MS office was so much better than the paid one. I never once had a banner pop-up and tell me that i didn't have a license 😖
Now, that i do have the license, the banner has made it a habit to pop-up whenever i work on something important 🤦6 -
Each day night, whenever I'm sitting to code and I feel like taking a break, this is my jam.
Brilliant lemon soda, with sugar. Helps me concentrate a lot better than coffee, or Red Bull.5 -
I really don't get the frustration people have with debugging...
It's one of the most fun parts of programming for me.
I don't mean the missing semicolon (I use an ide cause I care about my time).
When all your seniors have spent hours on trying to find a bug and after a few days you're able to present a fix to them, that honestly is the best feeling, potentially better than "finishing" a product (let's be honest, it's never finished)1 -
So a guy trying to convince me that vim is bad, just told me that jetbrains is better than vim, which he accused as dead software, because the jetbrains website is better than vim website.5

Rant
Arg! Stack overflow why are you so full of argumentative dumb wits. I post serious question for a serious answer and what do I get? People who apparently know my situation better than me and have decided what I want to be done shouldn't be done. They don't even know what I am making. Either answer the question or move on!!!5 -
Team member knows x better than me?
No fucking way am I gonna ask them to do it. Even if I have to learn the whole damn thingamajig from scratch. Coffee and some Halo OST are all I need, baby!
(In fairness to myself, said teammate is a bit of a hijacker when it comes to helping...)4 -
Publishing stuff and receiving feedback and improvement ideas is sush a great feeling. A guy opend an issue today asking for a feature to be implemented and he was very polite. Thanking me for my work.
This is way better than money. Money can't buy that feeling. People like this guy is the reason open source stuff lives. -
I'm quite the Microsoft fan, so let the downvotes flow, but can you please tell me why:
1. Some consider IE and Edge to be the same thing (when they are not - https://developer.microsoft.com/en-... )
2. Java is better than C# (which I have heard some people say)?7 -
Is it only me that I feel I am so special for being a programmer, and also able to think, learn, and analyze better than other people?
I feel like we are small group of people that do magical things that change the world while nobody even realizes or appreciates what we do4 -
Manager was a douche again.
I mean not that it's anything new but this guy seriously has an issue with being respectful to coworkers and me. Has this pompous, I'm better than thou attitude. It completely ticks me off.
Guy needs an attitude adjustment stat. As a leader I expect better. I get you've been in the industry 20 years. I get it, but you don't have to be an asshole about it. I'm doing my best, I may code a little slower, but I'm not fucking stupid.1 -
Dear hex.pm website, please fire the developer who programmed this email and employ me. I grantee you I am better than this asshole.

Is it just me or is the Audio driver for Antergos WAAAY better than the one on Windows? Big diffrence for me at least.
Also, huge thanks to whoever made devRantron available on AUR.11 -
Friend: "what is it, you love so much about being a developer?"
Me: "The feeling & satisfaction of writing something better & prettier than my past self."

No die() got triggered.

Is it just me or is it really fuckin amazing when ur teacher tells you after a year that you are a better programmer than he is 😒 even tho ur just a beginner?
I just started learning to code and i was already better at it than the person who is supposed to teach me... which is great if you ask me #sarcasm
And when we finish a simple task on if statements - which he thought was gonna take us a whole hour - in like 5 minutes, he doesnt let us work on our own programs: "Can you close that? Its not related to the lesson"
Ffs man! 😤 Am i supposed to sit here for an hour just staring into the void, doing fuck all, while i could actually improve my skills?
Then you go home and learn more in two hours than you'll ever do throughout the following 3 years in school.... 😧
If this is not a complete waste of time then i have no fucking clue what is.
GCSE Computer Science sucks (at least in my school). Is there anyone out there with similar issues or is it just our lucky bunch?
My advice to young/beginner programmers:
If you really want to learn, please just google what ur interested in and use stackoverflow6 -
Starting to get really hyped about how my book is progressing, thinking about starting to put some promotional items and desk tat together...
Oh lord I'm a better author than a dev, someone slap me...
(I'm slightly terrified that it might actually get finished and may have fans so my mind is sort of melting into sludge and I hide it behind excitement)17 -
Client: I need you to clean up the database and remove all rows [with children] with a timestamp older than 5 years
Team: OK
Team [internally]: we definitely need a dba for this
Me: dba? Why? A junior dev can do that
Team: yyeeaahh, but still.. A DBA would do it better. You know, foreign keys and everything
Me: ....8 -
I spent 5 hours last night from 20:00 to 01:00 rewriting a class so it was understandable, testable and correct. It's not great but a shit load better than the pile of shit that was there before.
I'm actually quite proud of it. Of course, it'll be totally unseen by anyone but me. Is this the best enterprise Devs can hope for, lonely satisfaction of a job well done?2 -
-- Senior Colleague: You're always slow to reply your slack messages... Seems like your brain is running on iOS 2.0 with 2mb ram

On the most serious of notes, and i need yall to think hard about this.
What makes you a good developer whether Backend or Frontend or Web or mobile.
What qualities actually make you a good developer?
I mean, we all use google, github, stack overflow etc. So what makes Programmer A better than Programmer B.
and in a more practical sense, ive been coding for two years now and i have deployed an API written in node and an instagram automation tool in PHP (which is down now due to lack of funds), i lack frontend knowldge (but i want to make up for that) and i have projects that when i finish, with my connections can and will blow up in terms of income. now you on the other hand, what makes you better than me?
and lastly, how much code do you have to change from an existing project, lets say from github for you to comfortably say, yes this is mine.question node php developers github api frontend mobile backend what makes you better stack overflow web8 -
Big company asking me about query optimization during a DEV position interview... Do you really have no one better than me to optimize your queries?
I'm really afraid of your codebase now... Might decline if I pass...7 -
Dear fellow devs who use Notepad++ as their primary code editor,
Why? I’m curious why you prefer it instead of Sublime Text, VSCode, or Atom? I’m not saying it’s better or worse than other programs, I’m just curious. I’ve tried to use it recently (although it was my first code editor I’ve ever used) and it really felt bulky to me.
Sincerely, Athlon.6 -
Days since last issue from 3rd party library: 0
It doesn't get any better than this folks!
It just makes me even more joyful to know that said companies library earns them 1000x figures of what my company earns! Yay software! -
Whenever I cancel out old chunks of code that do not serve their function anymore, or that I commented out in early phases to make space for better functions, I feel dead inside. It's almost like if I was saying goodbye to a very old friend, who supported me through the project and reminded me of how I started it.
Than I notice how stupid and/or inelegant that chunk was, and feel better. 😂 -
Learn to say no...more than anything I just want to help my fellow engineers. Now I am so loaded with so much work that 3 people couldn't poorly do my job. No relief in sight and all I get are unrealistic deadlines and poor criticism when my work is better than anything that was done previously.
Someone tell me why the hell I wanted to do this line of work again?2 -
Well I can say one thing for sure. The tooling found for Flutter in the form of IntelliJ and Android Studio is far superior than fucking around on a text editor das for sure.
Not really into the continuous nesting of widgets. But then again I was not a big fan of having jsx either.
Both options still better than fucking around with the Java Android api....and I fucking love Java.
Still feels like Google realized that such approach was better, else I don't think they would have justified the creation of the Flutter lib. And yes. I know that it is not a complete replacement for Android Java, but the interfacing between Dart and the Java api feels more natural at least to me and the widgets look native af so we go on with them big plus digits.2 -
questions in our mind as soon as we see someone coding in public place:
» What is he/she working on?
» Is that person better than me?
and then we finally judge him/her as a showoff! 😂 -
As a kid when I was coding I used building blocks and I used some yesterday for Lego robotics at a science center and I felt really dumb because over 2 years since I was 10 I used actual code like typing it and it feels much better than blocks and just over all building blocks just make me feel so stupid😵2

After doing some self reflection today, I realized that I could finish college (I passed every exam), but the amount of time I spent for college (basically the whole day each day) is too much to handle for me.
Note to future me: If you blame yourself for why you didn't continue, it's because of the lack of time, freedom and calmness of your mind. Otherwise you would have went literally insane.
Trust me, your early version is in that phase right now, and I know it better than you do.9 -
I was recently asked to do tech support for an event being designed by webdesign and business students
All they asked me to do was generate a qr-code to their site. -_- took 10 seconds on a website. I even matched their color theme
Yet their rsvp system is to email an event account and they count the number of emails. Why wasn't I asked if I could set up a better system rather than a simple qr. I just learned about this and it's too close to the event to setup a better system and pitch it to them -
I was fine with Eclipse. Then everyone around me told me that Eclipse is old and IntelliJ is new and super cool and makes me super fast and much more productive. Finally in our company we got a Ultimate 2018 license and I started to use it. There is a function: import from Eclipse. Hey cool - let’s import and go... but no. After importing I needed one day to get that running. But I’m not really convinced. After that... ok let’s try another project where colleagues have used IntelliJ already. But after checking out - that also didn’t work well and I spent the whole day it running locally. Although it’s a maven project. Up to know I think Eclipse is better in handling Tomcat and better shows the version control state of files. And for me the workspace concept of Eclipse seems to be better than the project concept of IntelliJ. But maybe I just have to get a better understanding of IntelliJ. Hopefully I can do my first coding in IntelliJ tomorrow. Maybe then I can see all the benefits. So far...4

I am part of a Slack group with dev friends all a lot better than I am. So I write my problem there. After they're done (playfully) mocking me, I am so frustrated that I usually find a perfectly obvious solution when I look back at my thing.
Or I use them as digital rubber humans.1 -
Why do people hate jQuery so much? 30KB is basically nothing in times of modern bandwidth and for me CSS selectors are mich more readable than the Vanilla JS functions.
Im not judging and would be happy if someone explains it to me or shows better alternatives.4 -
To be honest, the majority of my work is just man and grep, and these two things already somehow make me better than the vast majority of my colleagues. Impostor syndrome doesn't think so though.7
-
I have a few colleagues who code best when slightly drunk. So I gave it a try a couple of times. That didn't work - I immediately felt drowsy and sleepy.
In general, I don't drink. I like it when my mind is razor-sharp and works better than a swiss watch, and even tiny amounts of alcohol spoil that clockwork for me. So drunk coding is not for me. -
Been worrying about this for a few weeks now.
As a junior dev, how do I continue to improve (with respect to coding style, technique, etc.) when my seniors are only slightly better than me in a technical regard? I feel like I'm improving at a drastically slower pace than when I first started.
🐢1 -
I started to teach my partner some programming basics (web, just html and some css for starters), since they asked me to. So far we haven’t killed each others, so it’s going much better than expected.
Also, it seems to be a very common misconception that one needs to be a special breed of person to be able to understand and write some code.7 -
Hey, can you generate a spreadsheet from this no-sql database with these specific properties for me?
6 months later:
Hey, the spread sheet in the new database, now use it, I messed with it for the past months, had some trouble with data but it sure is better than the db, right?
...
Just die...5 -
tldr: my classmates suck and I hate them
We study cs in school, and my classmates are super dumb.
Here is an example from today:
The task: build an http server in python, using sockets.
My classmates: writes everything in the main function, uses try-expect for everything and every error possible, nothing works, nothing worked after a week.
Me: properly separated to different functions, used goddam regrx to get data from requests, used asyncio to make sure it can handle multiple requests at the same time, everything worked after 2 hours.
But, and here is the problem, after I finish they ask me a bunch of dumb, 'Just Google it dude' questions and they call me condescending because I get mad after the second hour of teaching them the same thing.
Once they told me:"you think you are a better programmer then us" and I just want to say this out loud: I AM A BETTER PROGRAMMER THEN THEM, THEY ARE THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU SHOULDN'T DO ANYTHING AND I HATE THEM.
That's it, I'm done. I feel much better now.
PS: it's okay to suck at programming, but please stop thinking that everyone who's better than you is condescending.4 -
Shitty co-workers. From bad management to lazy colleagues I've had it all, and all of it pushes me to be better than they are.1

"I might need to come back to this page later" always leads to about 50 tabs being open and me just opening the site in a new tab because that's just quicker than finding it.
I need to get better at managing this2 -
Developers who think spaces are better than tabs.
Seriously every editor other than Notepad lets you set how many spaces a tab is equal to. Stop trying to force your stupid 2 space tabs on me.4 -
Trustico CEO emailed private key which is used to sign TLS certificates, making more than 23k certificates compromised!
This makes me think, that we should not trust others for our security (like ca), failure of CA can put our website at risk. What is the better way to do it?

I always hear stories about someone hearing one of our developer friends is a developer and assumes that means they know everything about computers. Hell, I've had it happen to me before (usually the common "oh I have an app idea that's better than facebook! you just have to build it")
A big one I hear if someone asking a developer that has only worked with software to help fix a hardware issue or build a computer. Personally, I'd prefer if someone asked me about a hardware issue (except printers, fuck printers) or to build a computer for them. I've been called a rare breed for knowing about an equal amount about computer hardware and software.
I'd much rather do some physical work building a computer (as simple as a hello world program, a lot of it is putting shit where it fits) than build an entire website or program for someone. But I mean, I might actually know hardware a bit better than I know software, and that's just me. (Obviously never do anything for free when you could be paid for it) -
So a lot of people tell me Linux is way better than Windows. And I know it's all personal preference but I was thinking about switching to linux. What's everybodies opinion?16
-
A person asked me to look for parts to build a computer for her. She has a tiny budget and wants to play games. I asked what kind of games and she won't tell me more than "games from steam". She won't even give me an example. Also, she doesn't want to buy parts like the psu and housing used, but I already have problems fiting anything better than onboard graphics into this rediculous budget. Why are many people so ignorant?4
-
Ffs, idiot comes to my PR, that didn’t have anything to do with him (he’s not even part of the team) trying to lecture me without bothering to understand the changes and the context.
I wish I could have replied “next time, I’d recommend you to take your head out of your ass first, and read the goddamn code. It will be a better use of your time than writing this nonsense.”4 -
The idea of going back to work in an office terrifies me. Like...it really scares me. I really hope things work out even better than I hope and I get to keep working from home while still projecting my career upwards.4

I got a phone interview!!! Hope it goes better than my last one :') that one was for a web developer position and they asked me about stack vs queue and memory allocation. Idk why but I sure as shit didn't get the job.2

I don't think I have this syndrome, I don't think I am great at anything and the surrounding world shows that.
I have to work really hard, more than others to get an average result.
What cheers me up is that even tho I am subaverage in everything, when I spend the extra time, I often get the avg result and when you are following your results, when you see there is progress, it feels better1 -
So fellow dev asked me design suggestion knowing that I did design way before, I provided him with ok-ish solution and he said to me: 'this is way better response than designer gave me!'. So curious as I am I asked him what did he said? He said : 'Yeah, sure!' on everything he asked if it is ok to add to screen!
That feeling when devs are better designers than designers you have at disposal!rant designer developer can't do everything by myself designers vs developers aint nobody got time for that dev3 -
Wk88 i basically see "I'm a beta that belittles myself, because everybody else seems to be so much better than me.."
While I certainly know how it feels, that mantra & mindset will lead to void or null.
It's a self-fulfilling prophecy and life's a bitch that'll keep ya down if you let it.
It's gonna be rough, but ye gotta stop calling yourself inadequate and start working on honing your skills.
No great feat happens over night, it takes practice and dedication.1 -
The button radius for the Android Pie pill and back button really pisses me off.
I can't tell you how many times my fat ass finger has accidentally pressed home trying to go back in an app.
Having said that, it's still a looot better than the old soft buttons.2 -
My (younger) brother used to be way better than me at programming. He was making all this cool stuff (mainly Arduino).
I learned to program to make cool stuff like him basically. I learned Python to start since someone told me it would be easier to start with (it was).
I made a bunch of small programs (shitty things to help with homework, text based game, etc).
Eventually took programming classes in university.
Now I do C++ for a living. -
Stating the obvious when writing comments. 🙈
I used to this when I was starting to learn how to code and let someone read it, 'cause it's better to have comments than nothing, right? 😂 I was wrong.
But that led me to improve writing informative comments and self-documenting codes. -

Everybody keeps telling me that public transport is better than driving a car. So SBB (rail company) is doing some constuction on a station and i have to take a rail replacement bus. Which is now stuck in traffic.
So like an overly full bus with the heating stuck to max is just creeping along the road. Past a single station that is on repair!
Fuck it im going by car to school even if parking is expensive af!12 -
!ok
A guy just told me that printing variables to check for errors is better than debugging!
I am done talking to him 😂6 -
The shit code I wrote before my cs degree is marginally better than the shit code I write now. The lack of of improvement is related to the shit job I got after my degree. Cs degree did teach me a lot of good oo concepts and design.... That I rarely use due to shit legacy code I maintain.1
-
I chose Network/Cyber Security because it was my internship experience and they were willing to pay me good money to stay on... No but seriously I am much better at understanding how complex systems work than coding them. This job, as stressful as it is, is a different kind of stressful that the deadline-fraught jobs of software developers worldwide.
And i can do it fully remote.2 -
Ford vs Ferrari shows everything wrong with upper management. They are a bunch egoistic pricks in suits who have nothing better to do than play office politics and take credit for the hard work of people under them.
One of the best movie I have ever seen. Made me wanna smell some oil and grease.1 -
Tried to install WAMP manually to learn PHP. It almost put me off development altogether, but great when it worked and I learnt a lot doing it. The next time I used Xampp before moving on to vagrant & VMs.
Sometimes setting up the Dev environment is the hardest part of learning. But better to learn in dev than production!3 -
Just because I know Laravel, Django, Angular2 and React two companies are offering me double the salary I am getting now. But I love my current work place and I might get the amount here too but maybe after six or seven months. I love it because there are better developers here than me and I am learning a lot. Is my decision to stay ok? What would have you done?(btw I am staying anyway)4

Which cloud hosting provider do you use or prefer and why?
I've been using Digital Ocean for two years, but I'm thinking about switching to AWS or Google, because two friends of mine recommended them. For me, at least AWS, feels way more complicated than DO. But if they are clearly better, I will switch. What's your recommendation, if you have any?
Thanks a lot!8 -
To the Irish devs here, any experience with employers in Galway or Cork?
Most jobs are in Dublin or Midlands but every now and then something nice pops up.
I really wanna move to the west or south in the next 1-2 years but I’m worried about the job market there.
Of course the salary will be lower than in Dublin but I’d assume it’s still very well paid for local conditions?
Dublin is just too international for me, I like the quieter, more traditional counties better..
Don’t hate me for that dubs😉3 -
Am considering quitting college and learning online. It's much better for me personally. I have learned more via Internet in a week than what I did from college in years. I am from India. Most of what they teach is pretty much useless & outdated and the teachers seem to think of technology as a static thing. I don't know if I can ever convince my parents to let me quit. What they think is college = job = good life. Thanks for letting me post here. Had to let it out.20

The bigger the number of people smarter than me defines how much I like the company.
More is better.3 -
Ideal job
I do creative projects whatever I want with no deadlines or pressure, everyone loves whatever I make except me because I know I can do better than that last crap I made, getting paid plenty of money to pay off all my family and friends debt and have plenty left over. Specifically making fun programs useful software or web apps and have plenty of free time for taking retreats and going out into nature away from computers and technology.1 -
Updated my TP-Link router's firmware today. Because.. new is better than old? Anyway, I tried to enter the settings page. Page not found. Chrome seems to find the page too unsecure to enable me to access it. Before the upgrade I've never had an issue opening that page with Chrome.
Opened it through IE and, a miracle, the page is right there for me to use.
Google had very little to say on the matter. Looks like I'll be using IE once in a while after all.
Any ideas on why that's happening?5 -
I swear, I started yesterday windows once for some guilty gaming. ONCE
Tried to connect Bluetooth headset
-> BSOD on the first try. Fuckn os can't handle shit
Works second time.
*Execute guilty_gaming.exe*
*Finish gaming business*
Want to shut down windows
"oh, I can only shutdown if I install your fucking update? Well fuck me pls no delet pingu partition
Next day. Pingu is alive. Wanna connect headphones.
* Connection: yes
* error.Failed
* Connection: yes
Fuckn ok, does it still work in windows?
Spoiler: fucking no! Very cool. I didn't there would be a better waste of time than gaming, but windows always fund a way to fuck you shit up.
Windows vista was less of a pain, windows 7 a nice memory and this is just an abortion fucking kept alive for the proving god that human can create a better hell for people than lucifer could ever imagine.
Way to go windows, I appreciate MacOS now1 -
Coworker won’t stop apologizing for everything even though he’s completely competent.
He and I are learning a software completely new to both of us and he’s constantly apologizing for working slowly, not knowing where certain functions are, insisting I’m so much better than him, always reminding us that he’s “still learning” (has been with us for a year), apologizing for being afk for a few minutes, apologizing for having other stuff to work on during the day, apologizing for asking for help…
Again, he’s completely competent and an asset to the team but this guy is 20 years older than me and even calls me “ma’am” unironically. Is there anything I can say to him about this?7 -
Well, that's it, folks. Got a job offer, one I might accept, after some tweaks.
I've been a bit more than sixty days unemployed. And in no hurry.
But there is one thing that uneases my mind, though.
I've been a dev, I've been a graduate researcher, I've been a TA and I've been a tech lead, but now the industry wants me in a primarily management position.
I like to code, even if that makes me miserable sometimes. I like to solve problems. Math problems, engineering problems.
But I OOH SOOOO MUCH HATE when I have to deal with leadership who can't tell heads or tails on a coin toss. Who can't make a decision and deal with the consequences. Who can't handle bad times, searching for someone to blame more than searching for a solution. Who can't listen to advice, who thinks a commanding viewpoint is always better than many compiled intelligence reports.
Who don't wanna even think about the possibility that they might not know something, much less that someone on their team might know some subject better than they do.
Frankly, I think might I hate bad leadership more than I like coding.
So if the offer is to have the patent to tell productivity thespians where to shove their stupid spreadsheets, even at the cost of hardly ever issuing a git command, then I think it might be the time.
I hope it is not a mistake, but I can always course-correct my career later. I'm in my late 30s, I still have, like, 40 years of labour ahead of me (assuming medical advancements in the meantime).
So, yeah, I'm joining the other side. But trying not to become them.
May sudo have mercy upon my uid.4 -
No better way to start off a new year than to wake up to message from the boss telling you that you need to start to work even harder because there are projects overdue and clients has started charging penalties.
Of course he doesn't care that there are only two of us (me, a Junior Android Dev and he iOS Dev) and there are 3 projects, all with deadlines in December 2017 or January 2018.1 -
A combination of life literally pushing me in this direction and my own interest in everything that is smart or complex.
But, I hope it serves as a stepping stone for me to achieve better things than being "just a programmer/dev" -
Starting up my iPhone 4s to test something
Low battery, I plug it in
It charges, I put it down and let it download an app,
after 5 mins it starts making the sound of unplugging/replugging, something with the cable or the phone is broken, when I was with iphones, these cables were so bad, didn't matter if from Apple or third party
Fucking cables always broke on me
Since Android I never broke a single one, olf micro USB still holding up fine
I guess usb C is even better, but micro serves me a lot better than any fucking apple bullshit cables1 -
Today a member of an other team said that React would be better than Angular 2. Mainly because React allows HTML inside the components declaration and One-Way-Data-Binding.
Me then: Sure, but Angular 2 also has this features 😞18 -
After thorough considerations I came to the conclusion:
RFC3339 is better than ISO8601
Also working with time and dates in C++ is making my head hurt please help me12 -
(was just talking to Root now, and it reminded me of this)
You know what I fucking hate about Android phones? They do stupid shit like update your keyboard WHILE you are typing. Hate Apple as I may for having inferior hardware and ridiculous pricing, the iPhone is more worth having than Android. I simply find the features a lot better executed on iPhone than Android, almost across the board4 -
Is it just me or has the usefulness of Google search been SEO'd to death? At this point only Bing and even freaking Brave Search are providing results that are related to what I'm looking for. Even Gigablast does a better job than Google sometimes (props for open sourcing the backend, Gigablast maintainer guy)5
-
I've probably spent more time on refactoring than on actual coding with this personal project. The problem is, ideas come to me while developing, and that means I have to go back and change things every time. Is that normal or is there a better way?3
-
This thesis work is legit putting me to the edge, I literally have been hating coding for the past 3 months and it used to be the #1 most beautiful thing I have ever learned to me.
Proof of how much some people can be fucking disgusting retarded assholes, existing just to steal oxygen. Fermenting my vomit is a better clean air investment than letting these monkeys live. -
Fucking sick. Hate this shit. But I slept a bunch today so I'm better than I was before.
Also for the past few days I've been playing Factorio cause my brother got me into it. I actually really like it. I like that it's more involved than games like Civilization. (Plus it's on Linux with pretty damn good support ya know)1 -
My best friends from university. Somehow I ended up with friends who are all better than me in computer science. Thus, I am basically forced to work hard to keep up.
-
Me: Ok i could do this in a litt--- wtf, this code is a god damn abomination ... I could just sort of do the thing and leave this or ...
Also Me: Fuck down the rabbit hole I go to make this a better place than when I found it....
-sigh-
Later Me: God damn why I do dis....2 -
Anyone else celebrating new years alone at home? My "friends" are having a party somewhere but didn't invite me cause why would they? 🤷♂️
Anyway, happy new year. Hope you're having a better time than I have.1 -
AAARGH
I fucking give up. I can't debug my code, and all my programmer friends have better things to do than to help me. The fact that portaudio requires me to store things as void* makes it even more convoluted if possible.3 -
Apparently, an old ex-boss overrated me, he thinks, he's still better than me, I've joined a related to him company and I saw code he wrote recently and I feel nothing but shame for him, why the f*ck on earth does this kind of douches exists?1
-
So the guy who sits next to me in my class uses white theme for his IDE.
Me: So, you use white theme.
Him: Yea, I like it. So much better than darker ones. Don't know why people like it. Does it bothers you too?
Me: Pfft, no!
Me inside:7 -
My first ever interview and the interviewer seemed more nervous than me. Didn't get the job.
I did have an interview a couple of hours later elsewhere with a much better firm and got the job :D -
Yo, i have a course where i have to build an android app, and we can make what the fuckever we want. Can you give me some interesting APIs, that are publicly available? It doesnt have to make sense, everything is better than using the anidb api, and thats the only thing that comes to mind.2
-
Most humbling thing for me us talking to people who have more experience than me about a problem I have. It's kind of uncomfortable at first knowing you're not that good compared to these guys, but eventually you just realize they were where you were once, asking people better than you for help.
-
That moment people assume you don't know things because you are generally quiet because they are around their friends. Uhm, I got the job and had to go through months of interviews, tests, video chats, probation periods and got the job almost 3 months earlier than I should and got promoted to a better team, you don't see me trying to demean your job as a call center consultant here around all the developers I know. Just lemme drink my coffee in peace :(
-
I'm stuck with Linux using Inkscape and Gimp (cos my boss is a tight arse that's why!) and one of my clients just sent me an .ai file.
**The moment you realise your client is better equipped to do your job than you are**2 -
One of my colleague ask me to review other team's code. I saw the code. It's terrible. Importing data from text file based on line break count and 52 'if else's conditions in one function and overall 173 'if else' conditions in one controller class. Fuck after seeing that code, I realize people in my project is more better than others. Thank God.

I've got 2 questions.
1. Are there any laptops better than a maxed out Dell XPS 15 for a similar price?
2. Once I buy my new laptop I want to experiment with Linux (never used it before). Is there some really good tutorial out there to help me get it working and figure out how it works and what the best way to use it is?4 -
News Feed for web dev trends/news?
I don't want these "how to do some weird shit with divi" kinda-news, I want to learn about new trends, frameworks, stacks, tech n stuff, especially new js features. Mainly webdev but other dev-stuff, too.
And if someone has a better reader than feedly for such feeds, pls let me know.3 -
Managing countless dependencies makes me wonder if we can escape the madness and return to the simplicity of vanilla JS. Must be better than being doomed wandering the labyrinth, right? 🤔🔄🕸️3
-
I like my job, but I will happily admit there is always something better out there, though it will be hard to find, which is fine with me. To assist with this, I made a form response for recruiters:
Is it a contract?
Is the budget for the role less than XXX a year?
Is it located in a suburban place with limited or nonexistent transit access?
If any answers are yes, I am not interested.1 -
not sure if actual bad habit, or just a natural consequence of what i'm writing often being de-facto "exploratory code" so the "bad habit" is actually the right choice, or...
but very often when i finish a functionality and look at the first version of the code, and realize how bad it is, and how it blocks me to implement following features... rather than just fix/improve that code, i just want to nuke all of it and write it from scratch again, and "better this time", because it seems like much less work and effort than trying to gradually fix it "in-place".
it definitely feels like a bad habit though, because it often results in me deleting and implementing to completion the same thing 4 times in a row. -
When people try to tell me that spaces are better than tabs and that PascalCase is better than snake_case :-39

Getting better with your colleagues: leave your computer in the office on after work with the Google results of "What to do if everyone at work is smarter than me?"

My space key is not coming back once i clicked . Served like 10 years. It deserve better end than this. damn it guys we lost him. He was so close to retirement. Just this morning he said to me " I am too tired of this board". Its fairwell brother.13

As a total Javascript/node.js noob my biggest take from it this week is that it's a lighter version of the backend while doing a lot of the front end heavy lifting in a programmatic style. It's not a total replacement to ASP.NET MVC or JDBC MVC, it's nowhere near as powerful. But, I could see this being a very good replacement for JSP's and simplifying the front end. I need that because the front end terrifies me more than the backend. The devil you know is sometimes easier.
Still, my first week in node.js and Javascript has been... pleasent. It's simpler and less powerful than static or dynamic typed languages but that doesn't make it bad. 🙂
I am biased though. My first language was C++ and anything is easier/better than C++ 🤣 -
Codeium did 700 autocompletions for me this week. I can see it evolving and getting better. Had deleted it a few months ago and use it again since a few weeks. Much changed. The autocompletion quality is great. It does what Ive would've done based on my project. I use quite consistent naming and it even generates good function names. I consider the autocomplete of codeium a huge success. I didn't use the chat tho, not interested in prompt engineering. I'm faster myself regarding doing it well. It also comes with a nice statistics page and is considered to be better than copilot. Didn't use copilot myself. Anyone else experience with both?6

Just to show you.
The overhead between actual SQL requests and the stack :
.Net 6 =>
Web API =>
EntityFramework core 6 =>
(middleware) GraphQl.EntityFramework =>
GraphQl =>
SQL
Seems a lot ? Yep. But actually... that shit just scales. More sql requests will not cost much. And this stack will take care of generating optimal querry better than me by hand.
(These querries on screenshot are fairly complex).
I like it. So, so much checks done for me and front end people love it too ! They don't need to open a tiocket when they need a new field.
So, /adpoted by me.
PS : And pair it with Blazor, miam.1 -
No more coding tonight. 10hrs straight today. 😴 My project can host images but the RESTful setup has fucked up my comments API to hell and back.
I think this senior thesis is one of those points where I seriously wonder if I made the wrong career choice. 🤯😬3 -
i am becoming our companies excel advanced expert. actually i am just better at internet searching than the rest of us. creating fully automated sheets makes me wonder what all of the office stuff learned during their appreticeship and how they can avoid using office properly while entering everything manually.
-
Nothing better than debugging 7000+ lines of css code when the theme had Grunt setup by default. (Old theme needs update because of client reasons)
Luckily the dev did a good job of adding comments. So I got that going on for me.
Trying to stay more positive this week.4 -
I really want an AI that codes like me so I don't have to
tired of asking AI to brainstorm ideas but it keeps solving things stupid
please, get with the program. learn my style. it's better. stop shoving your style at me. neck yourself (I can say this right? it's funny and AI has no necks anyway! dark humor funny 🥺, but illegal merchandise 😔)
*coffee rage*
guess I'll have to use my own brain because it's literally less frustrating than reading its drivel that it keeps messing up despite me saying corrections a billion times. and this is one of the SMARTER AIs. eesh
guys can you make the tools better already. *taps foot*8 -
Happy Christmas and happy new years. 2018 was not a good year for me. Many project got delayed and not happy with my performance. I wanted to learn many thing and do many things but was not able to achieve those things.
I don't even feel like enjoying my birthday anymore. (It's on 27).
Let's hope the 2019 will be better than this dumpster fuck 2018. -
When am trying to explain my app to potential client. And he behaves as he knows this app way better than me ? 😒1

! Not a rant about Linux being better than Windows.
I used to ignorantly think that but experience and awesome community's like this have taught me better.
At a previous job I worked with Linux for ages and git used to how streamlined it is when working with a console. I then moved to Windows (to make games I'm Unity3D, which was awesome!) and found myself pining for a decent console. I finally found ConEmu which has a multi tab feature!
Just wanted to share this, knowing it made my life way more fun!6 -
I'd probably say the activity that's made me a better dev is going to school for graphic design. Though it would help more if I was a front end developer, it helps me think more about the end user seeing as that's what my schooling focused on. Outside of schooling, probably painting and drawing just due to thinking creatively in my free time I think helps me approach dev problems in different ways than some of my non visual co workers.
-
I actually went to college and got a bachelors degree in both computer science and buisness.
Take that all you guys that are better than me!8 -
Actually my degree helped me a lot, I owe my teachers most of what I know, I learned so much, I even learned to love programming with one of my teachers and now I can't think of myself doing anything apart from programming. It got me my first job, and soon I realized my formation (and my college partner's) was among the best in my country, I was soon able to solve problems that no one else in the team could, and could learn new stuff faster than them, all the graduated from my same college usually had better projects and instant good reputation because they knew we were well prepared.
So YES, my degree helped me and my friends a LOT and I feel I couldn't have chosen a better thing to study or a better place to do it. -
I have spent more nights than I care to share browsing the app store for an app to make me better at my Job in just a few simple clicks. 😩 Why does becoming a better programmer take so much time.
-
Thanks for letting me know my $documentName is blurry apple, but i think I'd be a better engineer than the one you hired to send me this email5
-
Got an email regarding the recruitment process in an MNC. They had asked me to select location and stream for my job. Every stream they had sent was only testing and its types. I didn't go ahead with it because I didn't want to do only testing. I wanted to build applications as well. Told my parents and they flipped out on me telling me I'm going to suffer cuz of this and that something is better than nothing.1

When documenting some stuff in Eclipse and you separate the parameters from the actual explanation with a - and hit ctrl+shift+f (refactoring) so the - goes to the next line along with the explanation... good thing I only documented 2 methods so far LoL they have like half a dozen parameters though o-o
I wanna thank the comment I just deleted for making me realize this LoL better now than when the whole interface is commented good jesus -

Doxygen is one of my favorite dev tools. One, I think it kinda forces me to document my code better than what I used to do without it and two....it's "automatic" -
My team works for a company in another country(Some hours of difference) and we work together we that company's team to develop their product. In the last couple of weeks I've been working with a senior developer of that company that everybody on my team said was a pain in the ass to working with. I didn't want to judge the guy just by others experiences, but man they were right. We're talking about a guy that has years of experience. However he is incapable of retaining any kind of simple business logic or process and leaves incomplete code everywhere (not tested properly and buggy). With the diference in hours, every morning I when I look at the hand off messages and there are multiple questions that he should know better than me(has more time in the project than me) and a lot of code that I have to fix! This guy can't complete simple tasks that could be almost copied and pasted from other parts of code. What gets me even more pissed off is that this guy has a better salary than any person in my team and does a lot less and with poorer quality. And to top it off his company management doesn't acknowledge that he is a problem...
-
If you are learning to code like me just because a language is claimed to be the easiest to learn doesn't make it best for you. I spent so much time trying to learn python and struggled but switched over to Java which is definitely more complex than python but I've actually been learning it better. Find what's best for you!
-
Hope you don’t hate me, but I have a confession to make. When I’m on mobile, I like safari better than chrome. No explanation, I just do.4
-
I have never encountered a better wrapper for graphical remote access than remmina. I have yet to find one for Mac that I really like, and I haven't found one for Windows that I like at all.
I have used chicken and finder's built-in client, but neither particularly impress me. Do you have one for Mac that you swear by?4 -
Would you suggest MacBook Air Core i5 8th gen model for a hardcore Android Developer?
Current usage on regular basis -
- Android Studio
- 2 Android VM (MeMu, Genymotion etc)
- node.js MongoDB, Redis for server
- VS Code, Chrome, Mongodb compass
My old dell worked pretty well so far it has a core i3 with 8 gigs of RAM and 256GB SSD but processing always seemed slow but managed some how.
Suggest me if MacBook would make better choice than other windows laptop which are much more high end than MacBook on same price?11 -
I am feeling low in my life. It's like everything i am doing feels worthless, like there is no point in it. There is always someone better than me in this.
How can i surpass my limits.? Anybody5 -

can anybody give me advice on why typescript maybe be a better solution on the nodejs side. I've been trying it out but other than compiling seems like es6 is still better2

I am working in the web department of a marketing company. Well, in the department there is me and my boss.
I am trying to push the idea of using git for the development of our internal tools but my boss doesn't see why it's a better way to manage our source code than using a network drive backed up with Timemachine.
What good points can I show him to try to convince him.2 -
Sometimes I just code some ugly crap that does the job and create a To Do to revisit it later and try to make it elegant.
When I revisit the code I always can't believe that I thought it was bad.
Seems like my past Me is a better programmer than present Me. Ouch. -
So best way for me to learn is copy paste from the documentation, then fuck everything up and then clean the mess 😌 Seriously works way better than tutorials 😂3

I got a new phone, and there is an option in the settings to disable notifications for specific apps. Of course, to prevent overload from apps.
The problem is that the apps that actually spam me:
Bloatware "antimalware" wants to be activated (I have eset on my phone and thats probably better than a random bloatware) and Samsungs integrated file manager "My files" (I have es installed anyways and its better than the bloatware. Im sure I use it.)
Their notifications just cant be turned off fully. Instead I only have the option to "hide them on lockscreen".
Nice, except the lockscreen is the only place my notifications actually dont show up. Even when I want to, it just doesnt work.
The teams making apps should actually read the docs of other projects, as this is just massivly uninformed development.3 -
I uploaded my resume video on my channel where I gave out information about everything in my life (almost), thinking that devRant trolls would do their research on me and come up with better insults than before.
Such disappointment. Sigh. You can't have everything can you.1 -
Remind me again why we have to use/support a weird entity creating framework across all microservices? So that every entity is consistent? (Who cares? Microservices shouldn't) Because hibernate is hard? (It isn't, and it's better documented than this, which needs hibernate anyway).
I'm just building a fragile distributed monolith. -

You know what is awesome. React with Redux. It is such a clean and scalable pattern for building UI. Conceptually not that easy but on once you have it. So much better than any other pattern I have seen.
But what fucks me off is working with other librarys with it not hard just fucking annoying.2 -
CMake with CLion on Windows is driving me crazy, I can't make it work even if I follow the guides :/
There is some better automation tools(for mouse/GUIs users) where I can setup my dependencies in a more straightforward way rather than learning/trying-to-understand this scripts? -

startups. enhanced version of something. not hating. but just. if you own one. please migrate the human resources too. just like the system.
you may have new human resources only if your startup is having/creating a unique system.
and please don't tell me yours are unique before you know the definition of unique itself.
effective development should leave minimum waste.

Even just "Loading..." is better than making me click on a random piece of shit on the page because the thing I wanted to click jumped down the screen a nano-second before I clicked it because you Ajaxed some cookie warning/advert above it.
The Internet is becoming unusable.1 -
Me and @asafniv cannot settle this argument and we need your conclusion.
What syntax makes more sense, Objective-C or Swift?
In my opinion, Swift's syntax is better than Objective-C, but Asaf's opinion the the opposite.
We failed to settle this argument and that is why we need YOU to give us your opinion.
In the comments I will send 2 identical functions, one is written in Objective-C, and one is written in Swift.17 -
Gemini is WAY better than gpt for dev assistance, at least for me. I’m using it a shit ton these days. I’ll still use gpt for questions like if cow tendon soup helps my ankle tendinitis out 😁.
Gemini is my main man3 -
Okay. Confession time:
I made a devRant account to "Join the Dark Side". Dark themes are so much better than light themes. They're easier on the eyes (at least for me), they have more aesthetic appeal, and I personally love the color combinations. So I just wanted the dang dark theme. What I got was an addiction to devRant. Well done you sly developers you just hooked another user.1 -
1. I don't have much of a social life.
2. I Sleep whenever I get time off It makes me feel better and think better.
3. I don't get in any kind of argument I prefer losing tho rather than ramming my head in senseless arguments.
4. Most important I take a break sometimes too.. helps me keeping my mind Positive. -
I've been working on an ERP system these days. Learned how to properly use AJAX and JS. Also, my code is so much organized now, I can really say I'm a better dev now than I was before and this particular project is making me give my everything everyday.

My first day at my first job.
I am super hyped. Now I like be like Mario under a hidden infinite coin's brick, siphoning knowledge from better than me.
First project meeting :
- (CTO) OK, Lets copy paste everything needed from our last project and tomorrow we start development
And this is how we created a new project in ancient toolset2 -
It is incomprehensible to me
why fucking piece shite visual studio not supporting horizontally scroll and multi cursor
(its have a very very simple multi cursor, if press alt and click and move mouse but its suck because, a online editor very better than this piece shite ) -
what kind of amazes me is rather than force the world to be better someone has been actively forcing the world to be worse and more empty and evil.10

Idiot: "You should use this thing for that ! It's way better than your suggestion "
Me: " ok cool can you explain to me why it's better or even what it does for me? "
Idiot: " well .. It's kind of ... Like .. Erm ....google it man"
Me: "face palm" -
"The Senior Developer told me I was wrong but I proved that he was in fact wrong." - Why are there so many rants like this? What's the significance of the "Senior" part? Are you just telling the world you are better than "Senior" or do you just want to put them down?3

took me four hours plus to get a nodejs app to successfully run on cpanel.
at this point I just want to sleep and sleep forever.
why will anyone ever want to deal with this?
the ssh access? complete crap but it was better than having to deal with the janky ui, it was also slow as fuck1 -
There are so many seniors here who knows the stuff way better than me that my imposter syndrome wants to kick in and slap my face to wake me up.1

Best part about being a dev is easily the fact than when something about a product bothers me, I can either build a better product or stuff it!

Was solving algo problems for the last few hours again. It's for technical interview prep but what I realized was...
If I just see them as puzzles rather than a pointless barrier to me getting a better job... they actually become fun...
That and maybe I'm bored at work, need something intellectually challenging/requires thinking, and out of ideas for personal projects I want to build.
