CEO: "What if we invest in our devs (i.e. trainings, certifications) and they leave?"
CTO: "What if we don't and they stay?"10 -
Oddly enough, it's comforting to hear other devs mumble "mother fucker" or "what the fuck, you stupid piece of ass" when working on things.
It means I'm not alone and we can all suffer together 🤗3 -
Dream project? Create a social network for devs where they can rant. Just need to think of a name.
What do you mean it already exists!?!
😁2 -
I want to say sorry to my fellow devs for what I've done today.
I've opened the second page of google search results :(5 -
!rant: So I've noticed some devs sharing pictures of their workspace. Let me know what you think of mine!17
-
So you poor devs... you have to be strong now, hr has a new tool to torture you: Skype has a new coding interview function.
What do you think about that? Good or even more abuse?19 -
I am bloody sick of being on my own.
I was the sole dev at the last few jobs I've held, with the exception of API Guy -- who didn't really help much, and who got fired / quit six months after I started. Every other job I've either been the only dev, or the only web dev. (Exception:My boss at my previous job was a Rails dev, but he has zero time to code, and was significantly less experiened so he could only rarely help anyway.)
But now I'm in a company with a bunch of other devs, and they're all ostensibly senior devs, so you'd think I should be able to ask questions, right? And get answers? that actually help? like "Hey, you built this; how does it work?" No bloody way.
So far every time I've asked someone for help, they've been incompetent. I asked about what a few flags did, and got an answer that basically said "you just gotta know. oh, and the labels aren't up to date, so don't trust what they say." I asked the head of the "product team" about a ticket that he wrote, and he changed what it meant four times within two days. I asked about another, and he said "oh, that isn't reproduceable." Thanks. I asked about mailers, and got two very different, very incompete walkthroughs from the more senior devs (9+ years on this codebase) that didn't help. I asked two people about how users and roles work, and still have no idea what kind of user (there are like twelve?) is what, what roles even exist, or how to check for permissions. `@current_user` is a thing, but idfk what it holds since that can change considerably, and there's an impersonation feature that changes how it works, too. I ask the product guy again about where to link something, and he has no idea. I ask said product guy about what this feature needs to do, and he doesn't know. I ask what the legal team needs, and i get nothing. I ask the designer where the goddamn CSS lives, and he doesn't know; he apparently just puts it wherever he feels like, even if it's a completely unrelated stylesheet. As long as it works, right?
I ask very simple and straighforward questions, and it takes them forever to get back to me saying what amounts to "idk, ask someone else."
This feels like the same crap all over again, except now there are a bunch of devs I can ask that give me basically the same answers as the sales people always did. Always "idk" or a confusing mess of an 'answer' that skips most/all of the important bits. At least these people don't [usually] contradict themselves.
So, @Root is all alone, again.
And currounded by incompetence.
Again.
For fuck's sake.
Can't I catch a break?19 -
@dfox I just want to say thank you !
Most of my friends are not devs at all. Thanks to you, I can share my adventures to people that actually understand what I'm talking about.
This is priceless.9 -
9pm Project Manager: We have to push an update TONIGHT
9.45pm Devs: okay guys, all latest bugs are fixed, just needs final check and we can push the update
10:45pm Devs: Guys?...
11:45pm Guy in charge of testing: Uh doesn't work...
- What doesn't work?
- I dunno, I get an error message
- What's the (fucking) error message?!
Aaaaand silence
Fuck this I'm going to bed.6 -
Well, the OS that is my brain has an official uptime of 19 years... It's gotten pretty buggy, I'm not sure what the devs were thinking with half the features...12
-
Devs: Feature A is done! Faster than planned even.
Manager: Hmm... what about feature A+B?
Devs: That requires feature B, and you said that feature B was not as important as feature A during our last meeting, remember? So we planned to do A, B, and then A+B. It's there in the meeting minutes.
Manager: But feature A does not make sense without feature A+B. Let's not release feature A just yet until we have feature A+B.
Then why didn't you say so during our last meeting?!9 -
Someone asked for internship at DevRant and got this answer, since the devs haven't made a big thing out if it I thought I'd just leave this printscreen right here..
You know what point I'm trying to make :)
Edit: I just renewed, dunno who my ++ isn't showing..13 -
Always the same story:
Marketing: hey I'm gonna do a demo to a customer. They were asking for feature XYZ. That's ready on thr staging server right? Do you think I could use the staging server for the demo?
Devs: well feature XYZ is not 100% done. Basically just feature X is done, and it still has a few bugs. The deadline ain't for another month, since we gotta finish ABC first. I guess you could use the staging, but it has a lot of bugs.
Marketing: perfect!
*after presentation*
Marketing: the staging had so many bugs! Why didn't you tell me?! It was so embarrassing showing it to new customers! Anyway, they loved the new feature. We need it to be ready ASAP.
Devs: What?! That's gonna mess up with our schedule. You know what? Fine, but feature ABC will have to wait another month.
Marketing: Well, it'd be ideal if we could do both...
Devs: Pay for more devs or dor extra hours.
Marketing: Just do XYZ. It's a pity that you'll have to push back ABC but it's fine, XYZ is more important.
(I might ask, if it was so important, why didn't you notice so in the meeting where we had decided that ABC would be prioritized?)
*tons of working hours later*
Devs: There, we finished XYZ.
Marketing: Yay! Wow, this month we'll have two major features done: ABC and XYZ!
Devs: No, ABC is not done yet.
Marketing: What? But the deadline was this week.
Devs: It was, but then you decided to prioritize XYZ and we said we had to push back ABC to get XYZ ready, and you agreed.
Marketing: Did we? Fine. But do it quick.
Marketing and their mood swings.5 -
*project manager + designer are showing new designs*
PM: so, can we get some estimates?
Devs (literally all of us): do we have a mockup for this interaction?
Designer: no.
Devs: What about that one?
Designer: not yet.
Devs: What happens when you click here? Hover there? How does this look if I select that option + this option at the same time? Does it make sense that a user can select *this* option with *that* option? They're kind of mutually exclusive.
PM: Well...
BTW: code freeze is in two weeks...4 -
"our placeholder shows an @ symbol, but please don't use an @ symbol!"
i'm so happy knowing that the devs and designers who created this app are earning 20x what i am
🤡🌎6 -
Seen as most devs listen to music while programming, I'm curious what music you listen to? Playlist are welcome too!49

Hahahaha, great start of Monday, discovering angry passive/aggresive comments from previous devs.. xD
// what is this? ever heard of CSS?
// css is for pussies, real men hardcode
// jQuery mixed with Ext. Awesome7 -
i'm seriously over mobile devs not understanding what backend architecture looks like.
the "we don't need a backend, we just need an API." statement drives me up the fucking walls. stop it, you should know better.
sincerely -
your friendly neighborhood web developer.6 -
"This site isn't compatible with Internet explorer, use Firefox or Chrome"

Tech support: we need to install backup software on your laptops.
Devs: what for?
TS: to backup all your important files, like word docs, excels, etc.
Devs: we don't use those. everything is on git/confluence/etc
TS: my boss told me to install it everywhere, so I have to do it.
Devs: well just disable it. uses too much tam, disk time and such
TS: whatever.
So he installed it on each laptop separately, took half a day, then we just disabled it and proceeded with our tasks. Now we get a question every other week why nothing is being synced from our computers. "We paid for the system and we want you to use it".
yeah..7 -
I hate clients that tell the developers what to use without discussion.
We're paid to solve problems.
Dictatorship on tools and methodologies are okay with junior devs or interns, but when you have senior devs, it has to be a democracy.
Having limitations like browser versions or server capabilities are fine, but declaring which slider to use, you MUST use jquery, or all that jazz just grinds my gears.5 -
I feel sadistic when I come on here to rant, because I see what other Devs are ranting about and it makes me feel better about myself for not being in your positions... I feel horrible but great at the same time!5
-
PO: we want this new functionality, a new api call is needed in checkout process
Devs: okay, and what should happen in case of error?
PO: dont worry, it wont fail. Never.
🙃5 -
Why its so hard to understand that - not always... - frontend devs will give you a sweet ui with medium back end and back end devs are gonna give you a medium ui with sweet back end?
Why can't we just do what nature made us good for and work in collaboration?
Fuck7 -
Can people just fucking stop using "hacked" as a synonym for "my password has been found out"? Even devs do this shit! Devs should know better about what a "hacked" account is.14

What happens when Web devs are stuck with implementing the Android app UI when the Android devs aren't around...3

Just spent writing code for 5 hours for my clg presentation!!
Never have I learnt more in one night about what I like!!!
Good night. Devs....1 -

I damn love devs. The humor, the devs easter eggs...
Have you ever wondered what 'git' stands for?
try 'man git' ;)4 -
Hey android devs!
How can I keep receiving bluetooth serial data?
I did what is said in android developers but the app stops receiving data after 12600 frames without any error or exception thrown.
The data is sent with sample rate 2000.
Thanks in advanced1 -
You know what drives me crazy.. seen this inside code of "senior devs"
If(something() == true){
// do something
}
Dude!!! The if only happens if its true!
Code this..
If(something()){
// do something
}
OHHH but if i say something I GET IN TROUBLE.4 -
A certain, reasonably sized company had a large in house payment system to handle all their client purchases that was developed many, many years ago. All the devs that developed it had left, and as it "just worked" they hadn't seen fit to get anyone to update or maintain it since.
That was all fine until it suddenly (and completely) stopped working one sunny afternoon.
After paying a small fortune for one of the original devs to come back and look at it, turns out the payment API it was based on had been retired. Warnings of deprecation had been sent out 18 months prior, but they had just been ignored, as the secretary receiving them after the devs left had no idea what it meant.6 -

When people listen to a complete story and then ask who the villian was..
DEVS : It's like reading JavaScript and then asking what is "this"2 -
So I’m looking at a senior dev role, and wondering what kind of coding challenges to expect, what have some of you more senior devs had to face in the past?9
-
Colleges aren't teaching enough practical applications of why we devs do what we do. Get students engaged with small business! Get them to think about how they apply what they learn to the real world!! We need creative new ideas from developers that think outside the damn book!2

Starting this week, we are gonna start "ScreenShotSunday" where devs will post screenshot of what he/she accomplished over weekend 🙌🏼 Don't forget to tag post with "ScreenShotSunday" ✌🏼️More details soon.2

who here has worked for a bank?
without naming names? what was the scariest thing they did, like, bad code, bad security, etc, that you had to fix
always wanted to be a fly on the wall of the devs office for a bank...10 -
What the literal fuck? This is an ad targeting devs. They don't even know what a fucking programming language is.
https://youtube.com/watch/...4 -
Glad someone is suing them. Why the fuck would apple treat devs like shit. Why do you want 30% of every penny I make? Then why the fuck do I have to pay you $100 every year? And what about not allowing me to choose my own payment system? Some are understandable but you still can't threaten to remove app from store if the dev don't want to do what's profitable for you.
So many examples of victims - Hey, Spotify and there's a ton of independent devs out there who have been exploited so far.
Your platform is attractive to users because of those thousands of devs who build apps despite your greedy policies, so fucking treat them with respect.20 -
I’m a devRant virgin and also a new dev so...
Anyone got any general tips for a newbie? For example, what are some bad habits that newbie devs should avoid picking up? Good habits?30 -
!rant
I love using DevRant and i am also a frequent visitor of sites like TechCrunch and ReCode. What other sites or apps would you recommend for devs or tech geeks??8 -
This is what I love about fellow devs - they know what's best, you don't need to ask something like "please keep adding xyz to your post so we can see if it...". We just do it. :32

Sales guy: Hey, you're technical. Can you tell me how I'd go about doing (foobar) in this webapp I have here?
Almond: Err... I've never dealt with that webapp in my life. I wouldn't have a clue.
Sales guy: ...but you're a dev right? Oh well, never mind. Anyone more experienced around here that may know?
Almond: No idea, but I seriously doubt any of the devs will have used it. Maybe one of the other sales guys will?
Sales guy: So you're telling me *none* of the devs around here will know how to do this?!
Almond: Very unlikely (thinking why the hell would any devs be using a sales app, but whatever)
...15 minutes later...
Sales guy: Ahah, I figured it out! (Explains what buttons he had to click in crappy app to do foobar)
Almond: Glad you got it sorted!
Sales guy: I'm really surprised none of you devs could figure this out, but I could. Perhaps I should change careers and be a dev.
...what?!3 -
What kinda music do devs usually listen to while working? My friends (devs) say I'm weird.
Idk, but I listen to slow melodious songs. Am I upsetting the order of things and breaking unspoken, universal laws by listening to Birdy or Ed Sheeran while coding!24 -
Fuck you cock sucking turd licking MS Teams.
What kind of assrat did code you into the marooned abomination you are?
I will take the timeachine and retroactively abort your devs.19 -
I love to write vanilla JavaScript questions, hand them to full stack devs during and interview and watch them struggle trying to explain what it’s doing. 😈16
-
Dfox is so lucky I bet devs just tell him specifically what the bug is instead of screaming
IT Doesn't Work FIX IT BLURFHBDN
I don't deal directly with customers.... -
What if devRant was created by the NSA to make paranoid devs feel more comfortable and share some private information they wouldn't share on other social media?
🤔11 -
Hey devs, what kind of headphones would you recommend?
I'm looking for high end, but not completely audiophile grade.
My budget is in the $300-$400 range.
Wireless is preferred but not required.
And please, nothing that completely drowns me in bass :P29 -
Richard Hendricks is becoming less believable all the time. In season 3, they staffed their company with a crew of offshore devs and worked intimately over video chat, and it worked perfectly! They produced a product that wasn't exactly what the world wanted, but it was exactly what Richard wanted.
Now, in season 5, they're completely ignoring their previous success, and hiring/managing the most expensive devs in the world, and enforcing an outdated, "be at your desk" policy.
And they're having huge problems with it. Go figure.1 -
I Remember what my senior told me once:
"You know you're in the wrong job when you see source code filled with comments written by ur senior dev scolding other devs for code fuckups" -
We'll finally know when non-devs have found out about devRant when we start getting rants such as "Why can't devs understand that I don't know what a browser is? It's not my fault..." etc etc...
-
At my previous job, no matter how many times I explained it, "a jquery" was an image slider for by boss. No need to say new devs didn't know what the hell he was talking about when he said the clients wanted "a jquery".2
-
Hi everyone! Had this app for 2+ years and just now i figured i should register. I like what i see and read on here. You seem like awesome devs. Anyway, just thought i would say hi and have a wonderful day/night!!!7

my CTO is on 2 week vacation, guess what he did on his last day...
installed a camera with a microphone in our office. coincidentally right near the devs...
i'm afraid to talk with my colleagues...7 -

I take my words back, teenage devs are not necessarily destinied to stay single. That's what I learned last week.5 -
Has to review another Devs TypeScript project. And what do I find?
A single ts file with 700 lines of uncommented pure hard logic1 -
What is it with devs (not all, by any means!) who don't understand networks or basic computer operation? I'm not talking about anything complex, but things like the dev who asked if his IP address could be whitelisted so he could remote in from home. We asked what his public IP address is and he said 10.0.0.27.
Or the new dev who started and said her laptop camera didn't work and logged a ticket, only to be asked if she had the camera cover open or closed and said, "oh, that's what that lever is for."
Don't get me wrong - many devs and sysadmins and IT people of all fields are excellent. And there are some who are crap in every field. This is no rant about devs in general, just *these* crap devs that I can only throw my hands in the air and think, well, they scored ok in the SQL test.4 -
a lot of devs just don't have the first clue of what they are doing
they haven't put in the work
they'll blame absolutely everything else (language, framework, pattern, etc.) instead of actually putting in the work and making it easier for themselves
sad9 -
!rant
I see a lot of crap about junior vs senior devs nowadays. I think the distinctions are small.
In reality senior devs have been burnt more in the past by their own mistakes or have seen mistakes by other people. That's about it.
What other distinguishing characteristics have you found?7 -
What benefits do Linux OSs give that many developers use it? Don't get me wrong, I like the distros out there. I've used some of them. Other than the server related stuff, what benefits does it have for devs?
I can think of the terminal as one.18 -
Solo Android app developer here. It's 4AM where I'm working. Been working alone on a project for the last 20 days. Looking to get some inspiration and discuss new ideas with other devs.
So hi!
What's up with you? What do you do?20 -
Oof. Stackoverflow coming under fire again.
Not sure what they expect though given their audience consists of millions of devs from across the world who use the site daily...
https://meta.stackoverflow.com/ques...5 -
Kinda curious if there are any devs who don't use a monospace font when coding and what drove you to do such a horrible inhumane thing?7
-
No offense, but if you're expecting 0 and not -80, then you know you're using floats.... Are there really devs that don't know what floating point round off is?9
-
Hello senior devs.. . What happens if you screw up? I mean if a junior dev screws up, the senior helps.. right?6
-
devRant!
I love devrant because devrant's design makes me to remind my B.Tech project design which had same upvote/tag/link styles like devrant and devrant has really weird devs too :D
What is the story behind you??4 -
Just looked at a fellow devs code (has 4 years experience). His test rig has the same 5 lines of code, copy pasted in the same file ... 400+ times.
What is the appropriate action to take?8 -
Company uses Trello to track bugs and features the devs are doing.
End of the week the PM: "So what bugs and features did you work on this week?"
If only there was a platform that we could track all these things... 🤦♂️1 -
Been wondering lately. Do Python devs use type hinting? Shall i start implementing it?
I find it this way, a bit more clear about what the method is doing9 -
No man's sky: I can imagine the devs fighting management and marketing letting them know that what they were selling was bullshit and they be like 0 fucks given.2
-
What browsers do front end devs here normally test on? I test on Firefox and Chrome because...that's all I use, but what about Edge/Safari or god forbid IE11?
I'm more familiar with backend dev ops so my testing consisted of checking Firefox a lot. :P6 -
Costumers always ask from devs "What will be the price?" before they exactly understand what they want...
-
How many devs here got hired through Google's Foo Bar challenge or got the invitation?
I got the invite and have sent my assignments for review. Anyone know what happens next.20 -
One of two ways.
1. Alot of opensource companies will startup hiring developers based on what contributions they provide
2. The current companies will fire most of the devs to exploit free work from opensource devs offering pennies as bug bounties while only keeping very few maintainers. -
I'm curious .... Devs seem to love quotes that try to give you some profound wisdom
Personally I don't care for them kind of like reading cards but id like to know if you guys have any 🤔
Mainly what you think of when you need to get things done what keeps you driven7 -
So most devs here are probably using Duckduckgo over Google. But what about Ecosia? Are there any fellow users here?10
-
Literally anything breaks
Management: Devs should have tested it
Devs: What the fuck are testers for?11 -
You know what is really a dick move? It’s when devs start a literal timer once someone messages them, and once the timer is up, they read the message. Sometimes this can be like 30 minutes of minimum wait time for just a simple fucking question. This really pisses me off and speaks volumes to all the other devs (who they should actually make an attempt to collaborate with). Fucking inconsiderate assholes.12
-
1) Let me work with devs without me having to explain fundamentals of programming
2) Stop devs from copy pasting code from StackOverflow or any other project without actually understanding what it does
3) Get devs to actually read and understand project documentation FIRST before jumping into any programming work1 -
What are some strategies to grow when your team size is increasing? My team will be doubling in 6 months. All devs.8

I understand we are devs and allowed to wear what we want to a certain extent, but why must people wear flip flops. I don’t want to see/smell your feet for 8 hours20
-
dont you just hate it when u want to hire devs but they ask for too much money so you decide to hire interns with experience ?
i became what i always despised6 -
what to do when you feel down and are nowhere near a computer to write a few lines of soulcode? (soul food for devs)5

Finally joined the supporter program. This app has been an amazing way to vent frustrations, get some dev related humor, and see what other devs are up to so I couldn't be happier to pledge my $2 a month. Thanks for an amazing app @dfox and @trogus!1
-
Colleagues who don't think about what they are coding... So I end up going back over their code, fixing bugs, reducing a search page (20 results) from 300 database hits to 150... Previously written by "senior" devs ARGH!!! No wonder the database server is collapsing2
-
Message to @dfox :
Just so mobile devs know for their apps, what advertising platform helped attract the most users to the app for the most bang for your buck? Was it Facebook ads, Instagram ads, word of mouth, etc?2 -
I don't advocate low code solutions. But what Microsoft is doing with Power Fx is legit pretty cool.
If anything it would expose people to learn about proper development since the formulas can grow bigger than standard small Excel formulas while simultaneously exposing them to a declarative and functional style of coding. According to what I am seeing, and y'all correct me if I am wrong, but this seems to be made to let pro devs jump in and help with more complex code while at the same time exposing it to non devs in an easy way.
I kinda dig this one2 -
Question: Do scientific programmers qualify as devs? If they don't, what part of the definition do they not fulfil?4

How can so many devs have NO FUCKING CLUE what DNS is or how it works
FFS the amount of times ive had to tell devs to clear their dns cache when the browser tells them right in their fucking face a nxdomain error after deployment of a new test system and they just come screaming in confusion why its not working is entirely too high8 -
So third party devs that my employer hired to build our web based application used fucking spaghetti jQuery to validate all of it with no documentation. What a bunch of cunts.

Hated function naming in python, because some functions are like "dothisorthat", some are "do_this_or_that", some are "doThisOrThat", some are, I don't know, what new technique of naming would python devs invent in the near future. Honestly, these naming creeps me out4

You know what the best invention is for devs?
It's not JS, not C++, no IDEs, not VIM, not VSCode, not Linux, not Apple, not a computer (🤔).
It's coffee :) hmmmm....rant stop thinking i'm talking about java i don't mean java with coffee not fucking java! its not java not java2 -

Company lands huge enterprise project
manager: we have a year to get this done.
poor devs : excited and thinks about so much learning with this project it would be.
manager: Lets get work started with (spits planless jargons)...meanwhile another team is working on SRS.
poor devs: So we are doing R&D right..(excited)
manager: No we have a demo scheduled after 15days.
poor devs: What??
manager: Get on it..we need something to show on demo.
poor devs: no words spoken
...after one year of unplanned demos...
manager: we have to stablize project..UAT is nearing.
one of brave poor devs: No no..lets focus on demo...why do you need a stable product.
manager: instant rage1 -

Every developer I know from work and uni uses either Linux or Mac for development (most of them are web devs), never seen anyone using Windows for development purposes :/
How, what and why do you develop on Windows? Not bashing, just curious14 -
If there are any older devs on here, (pre StackOverflow) what did debugging look like back then? Rifling thru language manuals?? Diving into source code ??
I'm super curious9 -
Stack Overflow is like a re-run of the Milgram experiment. Give a bunch of devs authority over their peers and watch the horror unfold.
Think I'll nip over there and ask what the best JavaScript framework is just to stir them up.4 -
Please share C++ advice for devs new to the language. What do you guys think is the fastest route to self learning C++ development for infrastructure systems and please suggest resources.11

I fuckin give up.
You can't use Android without fuckin gapps, you can but it's fuckin miserable.
And microG still sucks (I respect all the effort from the devs tho)
And there are not enough roms that implement signature spoofing
Almost all the open source apps look like shit and are outdated (also appreciate the devs efforts)

Complete bug reports for devs: Error name, stack trace, what did you do when it happened and all that stuff
Complete bug report for users: it crashed help1 -
What do you think about having a portfolio website for junior devs? Does it help, does it not? How could I promote mine?13
-
Today one of the more junior back-end devs told us, that he doesn’t plan to do front-end, because he doesn’t want to make design.
He basically told us that in his view FE devs do design work and that’s it.
What the f**? We have designers for that. Front-end devs are not the ones who make design. Reaaad uupp, boy6 -
The dislike of Internet Explorer is pretty universal. But I have to know, what do the devs who worked on IE think of it.7

NodeJS devs
what would you recommend for a highly data intensive project that *may scale* to a large level?
Express, SailsJS, or Meteor?7 -
What other devs fucking hate it when asked to do work in photoshop?
I code get a fucking designer to make it look pretty.2 -
Well Its internship season in the college now... I am a developer and companies will come and wont even look at us(the devs) .. Because apparently all they want is data structures(sigh)... What should I do?? ?6

I don't want to start any wars in the comments, but what do you devs prefer: iOS or Android?
I'm not saying one is better. I'm just genuinely curious what other devs use. I prefer to use Android because I can do more with my phone.
I'm actually curious what most of you use, so feel free to tag other ranters you know in the comments. I've already commented the few I could come up with off the top of my head.15 -
When devs clash:
-See, I've got this *condition* where myDick() is bigger than yourDick(), so Try{} me and see what you Catch{}2 -

A. Strict timing in the office (e.g. 9-6)
B. Deadline focused work any hours you want and beat the deadline.11 -
Junior newbie dev here.
I want to buy "Clean code" by Robert C Martin. Its tad bit pricy here in india.
I wanted other devs (especially senior devs) opinion on the book. Is it worth the buy ? What are your reviews ?4 -
Seriously though, since so many devs I know rant about their QA / test engineers, what would your ideal Test engineer look like?!
I mean sometimes I feel like devs expect test engineers to write them their unit tests too...4 -
What are the common problems need to be solved by devs during full stack web development?
My problem is optimisation. -
These devs keep getting hold of me to tell me that what I told them to do worked.
Well, yeah. That's why I said to do it.1 -
Any devs who produce music as well? (Either as a profession or as a hobby)
If you do, what genre of music do you produce? And what DAW do you use? (optional)10 -
Greetings, fellow JS devs
What change do you want on the next breaking version of JS?
I would say use square bracket instead of curly bracket for object.
What do you think?30 -
Just explained 3 senior devs what cherry-pick is.
Dunno if I should quit or get them fired.
Thoughts?5 -
Hi fellow devs!
As a developer it is a crucial to be productive. Obviously the most effecient way is to get in the flow.
What is your rituale to reach this state?7 -
Happy New year fellow devs!!!!
May it suck less than the previous one!!
And may we all get what we want :) -
any mathematician turned devs here?
I think developers with a formal mathematical education should be the ones actually developing softwares. Ordinary developers are just good cooks who know to prepare these recipes by knowing to mix and manage the Ingredients through their experience, developing software using various libraries and frameworks, I don't understand what innovation we devs do in it, makes me feel less passionate about my work sometimes.
(I embrace the fact that being a developer requires an arstisic craftsmanship to do it properly)9 -
What do devs here do when lack of motivation strikes hard? I have lots of projects in Swift and RN in progress but zero drive to touch them.
Asking for a friend ... 😂7 -
What if all devs worked together to create a programmed God which only obeys devs? And hates bosses....
I think we can do it guys!
Ps. Bagsie not dealing with merge conflicts.10 -
Frontend JS devs - did you take the plunge into Typescript?
I've done some reading and a simple intro course but I'm still on the fence, what pushed you over the edge to adopt it?4 -
Quick question to all the other devs. I am learning libgdx(the multiplatform thing) to make an Android app. Would that count as Android experience for future jobs? Or game development? What skills am I building for a resume?5
-
When the fuck will some people here start using categories how they should be used? They post something in "rant" category, but it starts with "!rant". Seriously, what the fuck? How can people this retarded even be devs?10
-
My game design & dev teacher. He was a level designer for an old german game company so he wasn't actually a proper programmer.
What made him a good teacher was he knew what he could teach and what was beyond his skills, and encouraged self study in those areas.
Not that many did, but those who did are all decent devs now. -
According to devRant there are a lot of bad developers. How did they get hired and did they like and know what they were doing?(i also wonder how many devs think programming is shit just because they never properly align and arrange the code?)3

Let's share the use cases here.3 -
When as a QA you start learning PHP and Java und you suddenly start to understand what devs are actually talking about
-
I am thinking about learning Ruby. Some awesome things like Oh-my-Zsh and Homebrew are built using Ruby. Read many posts about it. Some say Ruby is overrated and cannot be scaled.
What do you devs think?7 -
So my phone is currently in the service center. I am using company test device to get by.
Software tester consultant at work brought home the iPhone test device that I wanted to use. It's been gone for a few days.
One day he returned it to the office and then it's my turn to use it. Peeked at iMessage. Turns out he gave this to his wife/gf/whatever.
A message thread reads:
Gf: Are you hanging out with devs?
Bitch QA: No, would never hang out with people under me.
Bith gf: as should be
I am not under you dick. I'm the project lead, you are under me. it's just that I help devs so I dev too.
I won't let you stay long in this company bitch with the way you think of devs. You are a tester, you work for devs bitch.
I remember that quote, you can judge a man not by how he treats his colleagues but by how he treats those below him.
And bitch I am judging you to be dick. You won't get what you want here, you won't abuse devs.9 -
No, friends and family, just because I code doesn't mean I'm a software engineer, or "in IT" and no, websites don't resize themselves to fit mobile devices with fekin magic, that's what we do as web devs, we MAKE that magic

What music do you devs listen to while coding?
I listen to Jazz, lo-fi, and other slow, melodic instrumentals with minimal/no vocals7 -
I'm wondering what peanuts Amazon pays its devs.
PS: This is why I prefer native over HTML 'apps' :v1 -
this whole conversation is 4 hours before a UAT deploy.

me: did they devs give you the new keys?
PM: no. what about the new URLs?
me: what are the new URLs.
she walks away. -
My family is well aware of what I do. In fact 2 of my siblings are web devs too! For my mom, she knows I make websites, but she thinks it's something I do which is really a hard thing to do.

Microsoft: Do you know dateadd from SQL?
Devs: Yes of course.
Microsoft: Well you can also do that in our brilliant DAX language.
Devs: Ohhhhhh.
Microsoft: It only works with a special date table, though, and it doesn't work with a non-continuous set of dates, so please don't filter too much.
Devs: Please what??? 🤯😵
Why Microsoft, why? -
To all JavaScript devs in here, what are your current feelings toward the emergence of WebAssembly?7

deploying the apps in production...
Devs: i'm confident enough that i can do this. Docker? wtf, i know how to do it.
after successfully deploy in production, 30 minutes later...
Devs: Hey, team lead. I can't access the DB, why?
Team Lead: what? why? what did you do?
Devs: I just successfully deploy in production using the tutum interface deploy button.
Team Lead: Did you uncheck to deploy the DB again?
Devs: Thinking.... hmmmmm No?
Team Lead: Opppsss, that's good. We can't eat our lunch until we fix it. We need to deploy the db back-up again.
Devs: Did I delete the db?
Team Lead: No? probably not you? LOL's
Devs: But who?
Team Lead: It's tutum but it's your mistake to unchecked to redeploy the db before you deploy the apps :D
DevOps / Software Engineer => IT -
So, I made this: https://github.com/PythonTryHard/...
Aside from the JS code that may trigger the JS devs, I think I did good. Maybe a bit too overboard with the comments.
What do you think guys?2 -
Any game devs here?
If so what engine do you use.
Currently I make from scratch and I'm looking to expand to 3D games. Unity seems like a good choice. (Platform: Windows, C# or Java)7 -

Do you prefer working remote?
And what are your personal pros and cons for remote dev positions.16 -
Question for all clickbate ad app devs: how many apps do you churn out a year and what is the maintenance like for them?2
-
- Document the current architecture & code for new hires as well as existing people to get a grip on the logic (not everyone understands it)
- Figure out what MLOps is
- Build at least one front-end application to understand the hardships of UI devs -
The problem with extensive insider documentation is that experienced devs won't need most of it and unexperienced devs won't understand most of it
And whatever docs experienced devs do need is never what unexperienced devs do understand.2 -
What are the most important qualities you look for when hiring new devs? What are the biggest warning signs for you? We're gearing up for interviewing devs in the near future so I figured I'd ask the devRant think tank its thoughts on the matter.9

-
I was programming a nodejs app using an api written by two other devs in my company. I tried catching the cases where the requests fail, but it just did not work. Then i found out what the reason was: Apparently the other devs thought, it is enough to send the appropriate status in the json body and did not set it in the headers, so I always got a 200 back even if it failed and there was no usable data in the body.1

The devs delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of abstraction hell... shadow and flame1

How do you normally train junior PHP devs?
1. Tell them to figure it out themselves which definitely take longer time
2. Spoon-fed what they need to do which hopefully will make them understand something (?)
3. Others
I hardly ever have a good senior dev above me that can teach me. So I'm really open to any suggestions.
Some of the problem of what I see in my junior devs:
- inconsistent lines and spaces (lol)
- multiple unused db calls
- not reading requirement properly
- not diving through the code and try to understand it properly (usually needs to be handheld which is understandable since they are new)3 -
Best parts of being a dev.
Getting paid to use your brain solving problems.
Trying to explain what you do to the elderly.
Excuses for taking a break and talking out loud.
Getting to work with other devs to improve your knowledge. -

The entire AppSync/Amplify SDK for android is a shitfest. The support engineers don't know what the devs are doing, and the devs don't give 2 shits.
