Boss: We are using Angular 1 in our project, right?
Me: AngularJS, yeah, we are using it.
Boss: I heard they have AngularJS 4 now and it's faster and better.
Me: Angular, yeah that's much better.
Boss: So shouldn't we upgrade it? Can you do it this week?
Me: Erm... It's gonna take more than a week.
Boss: How much time do you need?
Me: 6 months, at least.
Boss: What if I put one more guy with you on this? How much time will it take then?
Me: Let me rephrase. It's gonna take 6 months for the entire team to upgrade all the modules in our product to Angular 4. Not including the time to train everyone on Angular and TypeScript.
Boss: Oh, Angular 1 is suddenly seemed to me a better option now.
Me: Smart move 😉11 -
FUCK YOU SHITTY FUCKING DICK HEAD!!!.. I'M FUCKING TIRED OF YOUR FUCKING BULLSHIT ABOUT "YOU'RE A PROGRAMMER... YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO USE PHOTOSHOP!"... OR "SUCH A SHITTY PROGRAMMER YOU ARE... Me: *opens a terminal in front of parents and starts a build script from command line. Logs start rapidly flooding the screen*
Mom: *whispers to dad proudly* “look at how much she has worked. Look how fast the lines are running on the screen!!
I didn’t wanna burst their bubble by explain them that their child is NOT doing any rocket science, and is something even they can do(maybe better).
So I responded back with a fake serious tone
“Yeah it’s all code.”
If only they knew what I was actually doing...10 -
Got an email from client with subject starting with "VERY URGENT", the email mentioned how urgent it is to fix this issue multiple times, it implied that they couldn't do anything else while this issue existed, but they were very light on details. So sparse on them that I couldn't reproduce the issue. 15 minutes after the original email I write a reply asking for some clarifications.
They proceed not to reply for 4 days. Fix took 5 minutes after they explained the problem better.
Apparently it wasn't so urgent after all.6 -
Interviewer: Do you know about SQL injection?
Student: Yessss
Interviewer: Okay, how we can prevent it?
Student: Yes, we should prevent it as prevention is always better than cure. It can lead to data loss and other problems so it can be difficult to fix it if it happens. The best case is that nothing like that takes place. [...]
Interviewer: I get it but how?
Student: By not building any web applications.
[Silence]
Interviewer: Nice, you may go. Do not call us. We will call you.19 -
A lot of the people are complaining about working in inhumane conditions. I want to debunk some bullshit that I think is causing this.
Devs are hard to find. That makes you valuable. A good dev that actually works for 30-40 hours per week is extremely hard to find.
The relationship with your employer / client should be simple: you work, they pay. What you do NOT:
1. Do not take responsibility for other people's decisions
2. Do not internalize other people's problems (you've got your own, better stick to them)
3. Do not let ANYONE guilt trip you into anything that you're not indeed guilty of.
4. Do NOT work for an effective rate that's significantly lower than you know you can get elsewhere.
There are indeed some utterly evil assholes out there that will try to manipulate you, into thinking that you're "part of the project", or that "you're all a team". Yeah, you are, but when it comes to making money, you'll only get the salary, regardless of how successful your work will be. THEY have a motivation to stay up late, to work extra hours, etc. You DO NOT. If you do that, and don't get paid extra, you're working for free, which means that you're not a professional.
Are you a professional? Then have respect for yourself, and bill for every fucking second of your time. Don't let the assholes think they own you.
As a professional, you MUST do EXACTLY what you're paid to do. No more, no less. Well, if you're feeling good about it, then you can do slightly more. And anyone that's demanding more, basically has no respect for you, and doesn't consider you a professional. That is the plain truth. See it as it is, and handle those scumbags accordingly.5 -
So Last year December my cousin see's me making a basic 3D game in Unity and says he wants to do programming.
Me: No, you don't want that. Become a doctor like your parents want you two.
Him: I'll do it.
Me: Ok. If you want to suffer, i'll teach you some basic C#
Me: *Shows him basic C# code in visual studio*
Him: *Not paying attention* Cool. When can i make games?
Me: That's not how this works. Where do you intend to study?
Him: M.I.T!
Me: You better get your ass infront of that fucken computer, google and youtube the shit out of you, matter of fact i'll get you a shit bucket so you don't have to get up.
Him: I don't have to go so hard now, i'm only 16.
Me: *Facepalm* That's why you have to do this now.
...7 months later...
(Yesterday)
Me: Show me how you make a basic calculator application.
Him: I don't know how to do that, you didn't show me.
Me: *laughing*
Him: Whats so funny?
Me: You're screwed *still laughing*
Don't get me wrong. He's a smart kid. Just needs to fucken do something if he wants his goal.13 -
M: Me
FAC : Fucking annoying colleague
1.
FAC: Hey how did you set up your microservices?
M: I used docke...
FAC: But docker is hard to setup, i want an easier option
2.
FAC: Which services do you have?
M: I have one service for the api, one with redi..
FAC: Redis is not a service
3.
FAC: Do you use AWS API gateway?
M: No, in set up my ow..
FAC: why would you set up your own? I just use the one from AWS.
4.
FAC: How many instances are you have running
M: I have 5 replic...
FAC: 5 replicas? That's why i hate microservices, they are costly
5.
FAC: How did you divide up your app?
M: Since I am starting, its better to run the monolithic and then break it up lat...
FAC: I knew it,you don't actually use microservices

M:(thinking)* Fucker, if you know it well why are you fucking disturbing me?? *2 -
(Interview for sde-3 position)
(continuation of https://devrant.com/rants/2132431/... )
Interviewer - *opens laptop. Gives a question.* solve this.
Me - *a bit surprised that such questions were being asked on a sde-3 level*
this is the 4th or 5th question from geeksforgeeks, isn't it? I know the answer to this. Do u still want me to solve it?
Interviewer - *not believing me* Yes
Me - okay. Well this *writing down the original solution mentioned on the site* is the verbatim code mentioned on the website, with complexity O(n^2).
However I feel this is not the optimal solution. Let me write a better solution.
*I provide a better solution*
This has a complexity of O(n log n) . What do you think?
Interviewer - Nope. This could be a lot better.
Me - okay. Let me see. Did some minor changes, added some caching (obviously this will have no effect on the base algorithm) etc
How about now?
Interviewer - nope. Still not good.
Me - okay. Can you tell me how to improve it?
Interviewer - no we are not allowed to solve problems for you. It is not our interview, it is yours.
Me - that makes no sense. Interviews are a two way street. I'd very much like to know the optimal answer to this.
Interviewer - okay
*copies down the answer from geeksforgeeks*
This is good
Me - *at first I thought this was a prank or something. *
I just mentioned this answer here.
Then I spent the next 10 minutes providing a BETTER solution.
May I know how yours is better?
Interviewer - this solution has 2-3 loops. Yours has a function calling itself.
Me - that's called divide and conquer using recursion mf!
Anyways let's take an example and do a dry run.
Interviewer - okay
*we do dry run*
Interviewer - oh yes. Yours ran faster. But it will run fast only sometimes.
Me - yes. Each time the algorithm rolls a dice to decide if it should run fast or slow. You have one goddamn awesome weed dealer man.
I got to go. Thank you for meeting me.14 -
Fuck javascript
Fuck css
Fuck even html
And fuck web dev in general.
i can't do this shit anymore.
i've been working in web for ~2.5 years, 4 different companies, countless frameworks, technologies and tools and it feels good having that kind of knowledge and ability to do anything in this field, but god damn. I'm exhausted of "moving pixels" most of the time.
And i know, maybe different company and position would better suit me, but how often do people hire pure breed back-enders ? not that often, at least not in my country. Everyone has to do everything. And even then, php/sql/sysadmin/devops work doesn't motivate me as much. I need something that would make me actually think.
And so i decided to change my specialty, i'm going to follow my long lived dream - game dev (C++) :)
Oh i know, i'm not naive. I know how difficult and hard it is, but it seems like i've finally matured for it. So i've been waking up at 5 a.m and learning for ~3 hours before work for a few weeks now, and plan to go part-time at my work, after a few months (need to save up some money) for ~6 months, to focus on C++
Then hopefully i'll be able to land a junior position. If not, well, i wouldn't be a problem solver if i let that get to me :)14 -
It seems like every other day I run into some post/tweet/article about people whining about having the imposter syndrome. It seems like no other profession (except maybe acting) is filled with people like this.
Well lemme answer that question for you lot.
YES YOU ARE A BLOODY IMPOSTER.
There. I said it. BUT.
Know that you're already a step up from those clowns that talk a lot but say nothing of substance.
You're better than the rockstar dev that "understands" the entire codebase because s/he is the freaking moron that created that convoluted nonsensical pile of shit in the first place.
You're better than that person who thinks knowing nothing is fine. It's just a job and a pay cheque.
The main question is, what the flying fuck are you going to do about being an imposter? Whine about it on twtr/fb/medium? HOW ABOUT YOU GO LEARN SOMETHING BEYOND FRAMEWORKS OR MAKING DUMB CRUD WEBSITES WITH COLOR CHANGING BUTTONS.
Computers are hard. Did you expect to spend 1 year studying random things and waltz into the field as a fucking expert? FUCK YOU. How about you let a "doctor" who taught himself medicine for 1 year do your open heart surgery?
Learn how a godamn computer actually works. Do you expect your doctors and surgeons to be ignorant of how the body works? If you aspire to be a professional WHY THE FUCK DO YOU STAY AT THE SURFACE.
Go learn about Compilers, complete projects with low level languages like C / Rust (protip: stay away from C++, Java doesn't count), read up on CPU architecture, to name a few topics.
Then, after learning how your computers work, you can start learning functional programming and appreciate the tradeoffs it makes. Or go learn AI/ML/DS. But preferably not before.
Basically, it's fine if you were never formally taught. Get yourself schooled, quit bitching, and be patient. It's ok to be stupid, but it's not ok to stay stupid forever.

Just spent 3 hours trying to debug something that worked yesterday because SOMEONE thought he had a better idea of how to do it. Holy fucking shit. It worked perfectly and you started deleting my code because you didn't understand it. How about trusting that I know what I'm doing since idk I spent 2 weeks reading up on it to be able to write this. What pisses me off the most is knowing he only does this to my code because he doesn't trust me as I am a) younger than him and b) a woman.
STOP ALREADY. JUST FUCKING STOP. So fucking fed up with having my work scrapped in favor of yours because you are a fucking control freak and think I'm stupid.29 -
Already existing website, I was asked to do a few things to redo. Code is a mess, 0 comments, oldschool technology. Completely static html site of a small company, nothing extreme.
Client: okay, could you please add 2 more items to the navbar for the 2 new pages?
Me: yes, here they are. Since it was already full, font size had to shrink.
Client: it's okay
>> Fast forward 2 weeks, full of similarly easy modifications.
Client: could you make the font size of the navbar larger?
Me: not really, we will lose responsivity
Client: do it anyway!
>> Fast forward to next day
Client calls me that it is urgent to 'do something immediately' with the navbar because it is broken and I am a 'horrible webdesigner' for making a mess of her website. I was told that it is not her job to make it good look and that I should 'use my eyes better'.
After 2 minutes of a lecture on webdesign she let me tell her how a responsive website should look like and to achieve that we should better restart the whole website. At that point I was the idiot who just wants to get more money and that I won't be able to do that since I am already unable to finish these few tiny things she asked for.7 -
Beware: this is me expressing how I feel about my programming/my skillset, and so on. It might be imposter syndrome but I am having a fucking bad episode right now and I just need to get this the fuck out.
I work at a distribution center right now. Can I provide for myself? Yes. Do I even slightly like my work? No I fucking hate it to the point. I hate going there every day, doing shit I don't like, not being able to focus on the shit I love but that's it for me for now.
In my free time I still am able to program a little but then the (I will call it imposter syndrome for now as I have no clue how to call it) imposter syndrome comes looking around the FUCKING corner.
*What the fuck are you doing? For real man, someone else could do that like way fucking better*
*Wow man your code..... there are so many people who would write that a million times better*
*You have re-written this for 10 times now. But seriously, this still sucks fucking balls*.
Fucking hell. Yes, at programming level I am still a junior, I fucking know that. But it fucking sucks feeling like anyone but you would do the shit you're making better anyways.
How fucking down can you get yourself. How bad can you make yourself feel through just a few fucking words/thoughts.
The only thing I am happy about right now is the fact that a very good friend is able to keep me at least slightly sane right now.53 -
How do I explain to my PM that I don't want to come into the office because I code better half naked surrounded by soda cans and several layers of cheeto dust4
-
I am so fucking jealous of all you assholes. Oh look at me, i am a full stack developer and yada yada. I have the time and patience to do whatever app or game i want and show it off.
Fuck, you.
If i get home, i am glad i can stay awake for dinner and play a little game before i go to bed and my next day starts.
I have ideas, i need to do some self study to get all parts of those ideas going, but i fucking can't.
I have no motivation and no energy to spend when i get home, and even the weekends rarely i will feel like proframming jack shit. When or how do you even do it?! It's driving me up the wall and it makes me feel useless.
Stop being better then me in every possible way!29 -
I just want to say this place is AWESOME! 100% better than Reddit and 1000% better than SO. Not sure how I found it....oh yeah I was googling a question on how to do something in JIRA and used the 'f' word in my query.8
-
Actually just 2 hours ago my boss showed me his "hack" which solved a problem he worked on half of the day.
My eyes suddenly began to itch heavily and I felt a strong urge to quit immediately.
The problem was no big thing and we actually spoke about it at noon and I made a proposition how he could solve it.
Turns out he .... aaaaaahhhh I better do not mention it, as it may summon evil spirits... sorry.5 -
All I can think about since getting this app is how much better my life would be with a devRant stress ball on my desk. Until then, my friend this fake potato will do.5
-
"Hey I am a programmer too! I can code anything, I bet I'm better than you!"
-
"Huh, that sounds cool! What languages do you like to write your programs in?"
-
............ "English"
🤦🏻♂🤦🏻♂
True story by the way, some guy I just met did this. I was not sure how to react. Should I laugh? Should I cry? Should I kill myself? Should I kill him?10 -
A: Can you tell me your opinion about this? Please, be honest.
Me: Ok, I think you could do it in a different way, but let's talk about what you did and see how to make it better...
A: I don't think so, I think this is the best way to do it.
Me: Oh, OK.
A: Why are you always complaining about my job?
Me: Well, you just asked me, and I work on this too, so I thought...
A: I don't think you're collaborative enough with me!
Me [walking away]: Oh, OK...6 -
Fellow Dev: the clients are requesting a gallery on their website with functioning modals.
Me: okay cool
So for the record, I'm new to front-end and I've got quite a lot to learn in JavaScript.
*I googled as much as I could and I made a proper functioning gallery in 2 full days of coding*
Him: okay, so this is great but they aren't really digging it.
Me: *sigh* yes, so what do they want?
Him: have you seen how an image opens in Google images? Like you click on one, the image opens while the rest of the content shifts down?
Me: um... Yeah?
Him: yeah, so they want that.
Me: ... *Scoops the web trying to figure out how Google does it*. Dude, I can't find anything close to it and I've still got a lot to learn. Idk how to do it.
Him: well, you're being paid for that. So, you better do it.
Me: 1000Rs ( approx. 14.58$ ) isn't called "being paid". Gimme a break here.
Him: You're a novice rn.
Me: why don't you do it?
Him: I'm your boss.
*Sigh* (he indeed is my boss)
Him: deal with it.
Me: FU........C.....*suddenly I realized how it's done* OH OH OH OH I just got it, I just got it!
(I actually make something like that)
*Lol yay*
That's just my best story of a fight. Lol.5 -
Them: "How is that low priority feature request coming along?"
Me: "It's almost done, a bunch of higher priority things delayed me. It should come live sometime tomorrow"
Them: "It better do"
Me: "Oh did I say tomorrow? I meant next week."
Fuck your attitude. You won't die not having your "saves 15" minutes a day feature for a few more days while some people can't work at all before I fix a major bug. You're not even my manager.
Bonus: overheard him talking shit about me working too slow later that day too.2 -
~March 7~
Boss: Hey cory, guess what, you will not take control of the servers anymore so you can focus on your real job, the company hire someone to do it
Me: Great, finally i can just program, thanks for the news boss
~Yesterday~
Boss: Hey cory, guess what, the person the company hired needs help to migrate some servers so you need to help him on weekend
Me: Well, it's ok i can do the job
~Today~
Director: Hey mr cory, we need you to help jonny on weekend
Me: Fine boss, i will be on weekend
Director: That's the attitude we need in the company, I do not know how much time you need but we're going to pay you 24 extra hours
Me inside ~every went better than expected~ 🤷♂️4 -
!rant
Observed a full deployment the other day and discovered it's extremely inefficient. I proposed an idea to fix it, and was shot down by a senior dev on the team. I was ranting about how asinine the process was and how my process could reduce the amount of time and training required to do deployments with out any additional cost or overhead. A senior dev from another department over heard me, found my workspace and told me (in a nutshell), "write up a document about why the current process is garbage and how yours is better, and how it works, I'll review it and we'll get it worded and formatted right. When we finish the document, I'll forward it to the CTO of your department with your name on it and my recommendation for review." Fuck yeah. 😈😎7 -
Jr: I'm having a problem with my environment, can you help me?
Me: Sure! Did you switch to the latest Ubuntu LTS
so that your environment matches the rest of the dev team like you were asked to do the last 3 times?
Jr: No, I like Windows better because linux is too complicated. Can you just figure out how my environment is suppose to work and than fix what I did wrong please?
Me: No. Let me know if you ever need help with the our standard dev environment. Good luck!24 -
New project in C++. I don't know C++ but very good at C and Java so not worried.
New guy joins us. Gets stuck on how to concatenate a string. No big deal since he is new to the language too and doesn't have a C background. I offer to help and he goes on a 10 min rant about how C and C++ are different and I don't know what I'm talking about.
Wait until he's done. Tell him just to do strcat(possibly a better way but I'm literally in day 2 of my C++ skills, but I knew it would work). He mumbles how is not going to work as he types like he's going to shove it in my face when it fails.
It was like a beautiful geeky mic drop when it worked perfectly.5 -
Funny how it's the conversation when I give my 2 weeks notice that all this comes up, like:
1) how they were "talking about giving me a raise"
2) how they were "hiring more people" so I could spend more time coding and less time doing bullshit
3) how they were going to fix all the other broken things in the company
How do you think it would fly if instead they fired me and I promised to fix everything that's wrong about my working there after the fact?
Anyway, I knew they would pull this bullshit so it was expected. Excited that I signed the new offer today. Finally getting market rate pay and expecting better work environment as well. 🐶3 -
I was getting a freelancer job to do some backend work for a company in India that is working for a huge company in Saudi Arabia.
The customer in india was my primary contact, I wasn't allowed to talk to the guys in Saudi Arabia. My contact, we'll call him Aman, asks if i can do frontend too. I decline. Now what follows were 4 weeks of backend work during which Aman called me 10-15 times per day via skype to ask me how I was progressing, and if "insert spec here" was already done. He even called me in the middle of the night, well aware of the different time zones.
But in the end all the work is done, Aman is happy. I request payment.
Aman: We can't pay you yet, you didn't do the frontend!
Me: I'm not doing frontend.
Aman: It's just a few simple changes and then we're done.
Me: Gnnn, fuck it, what do you need?
Aman: Our customer would like the frontend to look better.
Me: Ok, so what exactly should look better?
Aman: All of it.
Me: Do you have any specs?
Aman: No just make it look more modern.
Me: So you want me to rework the whole frontend? That's not just a few simple changes...
Aman: How long would you need?
Me: I actually don't do that kind of work.
Aman: We pay you double your hourly rate if you do this and finish it fast.
(This is were I should have just said no... but the greed...)
Me: Ok, but it will take me about 3 weeks to do that.
Aman: OK.
Me: Do you have any preferences as to how it should look?
Aman: No, just surprise us.
(After this sentence I really should have gotten the hell out of Dodge)
After working 3 weeks changing over 20.000 lines of CSS and most of the HTML I present Aman with the changes.
Aman: No our customer doesn't like the changes. Can you make a different version?
Me: What doesn't he like, any specifics, coloring, styling of lists or the buttons?
Aman: He doesn't like the whole thing. Please make us another version.
Me: Ok, you are the customer, but it would really help if you give me some pointers as to how it should look like.
Aman: Just do your best.
Me: ..., ok, that's helpful.
2 weeks later...
Aman: No our customer liked the version before better. But could you make it look more modern.
Me: *Bangs head against wall repeatedly*
Me: What do you mean by modern?
Aman: It should look more modern, as a whole.
Me: Ok, I get that, but could you give me an example?
Aman: Sends me a screenshot of the overview screen with all the elements encircled and modern written beside them.
1 week later...
Aman: The customer has decided, he likes the original version best. Can you undo all the changes?
Me: Sure but that'll take like 1 hour.
Aman: Oh by the way we were asked by accounting why the price for this project was so high?
Me: *hugh* *gnn* what?
Aman: Well at the beginning, you estimated the backend and frontend work to be done in 4 weeks.
Me: The frontend was never part of the original estimate.
Aman: Can you do anything concerning your hourly rate, so that we can get back to the original pricing.
Me: *make a mental note to never work with an intermediary company in india again and cancels the job requesting the due payment*
Luckily I got paid the full amount but not before having another 10 Skype call with Aman...17 -
Favorite/most hated language? (I love a good flame war)
Why did you quit your previous job / Moment you've considered quitting your current job?
Why do you think Linux is so much better than OSX? (Ahh yes I feed on apple flavored hipster tears)
What side project are you currently working on?
If you had the best teams and unlimited funds, to be used only on a serious project using both Blockchain, IoT and AI, what would you create?
If you forgot how to code, what other career would you pursue?
What is your "I was so busy wondering if I could, that I forgot whether I should" concept/idea/project?
How many chicken eggs would fit inside the moon if it was hollow? (I like retarded interview questions)
If you started a startup, what unique perk would you offer your developer employees?
Do you under- or overengineer?
Most unnecessary feature you ever had to create?
Most necessary feature your boss/client denied to approve?15 -
In the last weeks there has been some turmoil on the Fediverse (Mastodon, GNUSocial, Pleroma etc) about "how nazis prefer a certain kind of software and therefore must the developer of the software take action".
One solution is to make software "harder to install so nazis can't install one"
The thing is, that people like that do a better job of spreading the views and the message of the self-proclaimed nazis. I wish people just started to ignore them.6 -
Employer: I want to make a search engine but only for our products.
Me: Sure. It's called an eshop.
Employer: You know that eshops are not engines right?
Me: Technology has changed the past few years. (hidden irony)
Employer: I guess that's geeky stuff. Tell me more about this.
Me: First, you need to upgrade your flash eshop.
Employer: (frustrated) You IT people always want to do things your way, aren't you? Nevermind, let's get to business, how can I make my site better?1 -
Sometimes I feel like my job is just babysitting my coworkers. I need to find a way to teach them how to think for themselves.
I'm not a senior dev but I am the one my coworkers turn to for help. I like helping (even if it's annoying some times), so I'm thinking about embracing the mentor role in my team. My plan for now is to stop giving the answers right away (which I usually do to get back to my work) and instead try to guide my coworkers into figuring out the issue themselves. This will take more of my time of course and will require I practice my patience in a possibly stressful environment (depending on how close deadlines are), but I'm hoping that it'll produce better coworkers (one can dream, at least).
Do any of you know of any good reading resources about mentoring or becoming a mentor, specifically in tech/development?7 -
Am I really unlucky, or are juniors these days all lazy af and such pampered babies that need hand holding all the time?
So back when I was a junior, when I wanted to learn something new, I would ask for some pointers from my seniors, could be an article, a video or even a book. From there I would look up further knowledge, play with the idea in my machine. If I couldn't understand something, or if I needed a better explanation of something, I would go back to my senior, but it was really rare.
Then comes this modern day, I'm the senior now and I'm in charge of mentoring a bunch of kids, who would treat me like their personal chatgpt. "Hey Junior #0, this is something you may want to read to help your next ticket, let me know if you have difficulty". Next day junior #0 would come back and say "I don't understand, the article mentioned X but I don't know how to do X. Can you show me how to do X?". Bro, no one knows how to do X after being born, just google "how to do X" and it gives you the fucking answer. Why the fuck do you have to circle back to me because of this. Junior #1 would refuse to read any articles longer than 250 words, and require constant 1-1 meetings to give him personal lectures. Dude this is not a class room, grow the fuck up! Junior #3 would write the messiest code possible despite my efforts to introduce tons of resources, then complain "why I'm still junior, how do I grow". Bro maybe if you learned half of what I sent you, you would have gotten promote by now. Fucking lazy kids these days!
Oh I can't fire these juniors. Top management was very clear that "we don't have budget to hire other devs for you, it's your responsibility to train them better".21 -
Manager: we should arrange regular catchups, I have several Monday morning, how about 10:30, that'd be 9:30 your time?
Me inside: dude, we both know I struggle to be up in time for the scrum at 10, do you really think I'm going to be any better at 9:30?
Me outside: How about 10:30 after scrum?
Manager: OK, that works, I have half an hour between meetings
Me: Thank fuck.4 -
Me: junior dev
Assignment: build a REST search service that also does (thing x)
Me: gosh I just can't figure out how to make (thing x) work! Nothing I try works and there are no online resources!
*goes to meeting with client*
Client: (thing x) is impossible in our application, so we are expecting (much more manageable thing)
Me: awesome! I think I can build that
Manager who can't code: what are you talking about, (thing x) is clearly better and it should be possible to do
Manager: *sends email outlining shifted requirements after the meeting, including (thing x)*3 -
SOMEONE PLEASE JUST TELL ME:
HOW DO I STOP BEING SO FUCKING AWKWARD!!!!!!!! Tell me please, i swear to you. My life would be so much better if i wasn’t so awkward and have social anxiety. Tell me what to do because i’m tired of it, i hate it so much.42 -
Me and my classmate working on the same problem but on different machines.
Him: Hey, how to create a file by terminal?
Me: touch space filename.
Him: Hey, how to open file?
Me: vi space filename
Him: How to do this? How to do that?
Me: Do this. Do that.
After sometime,
Him: Hahahaha... I solved the problem faster than you... You are so slow. I am better.
Me: 😒👺👿2 -

HR: you didn’t write in your job experience that you know kubernetes and we need people who know it.
Me: I wrote k8s
HR: What’s that ?
…
Do you know docker ?
Do you know what docker is ?
Do you use cloud ?
Can you read and write ?
Are you able to open the door with your left hand ?
What if we cut your hands and tell you to open the doors, how would you do that ?
What are your salary expectations?
Do you have questions, I can’t answer but I can forward them. Ask question, ask question, questions are important.
What is minimal wage you will agree to work ?
You wrote you worked with xy, are you comfortable with yx ?
We have fast hiring process consisting of 10 interviews, 5 coding assessments, 3 talks and finally you will meet the team and they will decide if you fit.
Why do you want to work … here ?
Why you want to work ?
How dare you want to work ?
Just find work, we’re happy you’re looking for it.
What databases you know ?
Do you know nosql databases ?
We need someone that knows a,b,c,d….x,y,z cause we use 1,2,3 … 9,10.
We need someone more senior in this technology cause we have more junior people.
Are you comfortable with big data?
We need someone who spoke on conference cause that’s how we validate that people can speak.
I see you haven’t used xy for a while ( have 5 years experience with xy ) we need someone who is more expert in xy.
How many years of experience you have in yz ??? (you need to guess how many we want cause we look for a fortune teller )
Not much changed in job hunting, taking my time to prepare to leetcode questions about graphs to get a job in which they will tell me to move button 1px to the left.
Need to make up some stories about how I was bad person at work and my boss was angry and told me to be better so I become better and we lived happy ever after. How I argued with coworkers but now I’m not arguing cause I can explain. How bad I was before and how good I am now. Cause you need to be a better person if you want to work in our happy creepy company.

You guys wanna know why I rage so much at the 🤡🤡🤡's I work with?
I shit you not, this is a ticket in our "to do" section of our Jira.
what even is ticket linking??!?!?
what even are tickets??!?!?!
or better yet.... what even the fuck is jira?!?!?! I've only been using it for over a year, give me some time to figure out how to use it!!!!!!
I don't know, maybe i'm the asshole. But at least I don't feel like a 🤡7 -
So I'm feeling a lot better today than I did yesterday. This shit's finally starting to give me some peace.
In the middle of my (first) morning cup of coffee, feeling pretty good about life for once. So I figured..why not do a face reveal?
This picture was like 5 months ago, but the only difference in how I look now is my hair being a bit longer13 -
The other day a non-programmer colleague asked me:
"How do you know what to type in, like, did you write all of that?"
As I responded, he asked me another question; "but how do you know wuat to type".
I use to have those same thoughts years ago.
It occurred to me that through constant bugs, errors, bad (team) projects and failures that its become second nature, like breathing.
So, as an experienced developer to people just learning the craft and juniors. Don't give up on your collabs, don't be disheartened by group projects, don't be discouraged by your peers who seemingly try to make your life harder.
Take it as an experience to better yourself and teach them something.
These are the experiences that will make you a better developer.1 -
Ok, so I'm one of the new folks here, and spent some time looking around.
And I've read so many of you write about levels of insanity at work that just baffles me.
Why do people do that to themselves? And no, I don't mean you sales-manager, or your boss who hired the wrong kind of dev, I mean YOU.
You are a developer, currently the market for devs is so large you can literally pick your jobs. And if you don't know how to find a new job, just Google (easy mode, search on LinkedIn) a company which specializes in recruiting, there are tons of them, and they will gladly search an employer for you.
Don't get stuck in a job that sucks - you will kill your motivation, and you deserve better.3 -
A tech trend I'm excited about ?
Fuck these days everyone is so excited about everything. One can't decide what to pursue. I end up reading and trying bits of many things without being useful at anything.
I can't imagine how lost newbies might be these days lol
For now I just decided to be better at what I do. We'll see if I can hold my horses 🙄4 -
Worst part of being a dev?
For me it's putting myself into infinite loops wrestling with my own self doubt. Is this really how I want to solve this problem? Could this code be cleaner? Surely there's a better way to do this? Am I adding unnecessary complexity? Is this going to come back and bite me in x months? And so on...
In fact, most days I just feel like an imposter.4 -
Ok.. So I'm a student striving to be a mobile developer and since the job market is non-existent if you don't have a degree here I had to take a customer support job for the moment/until I find something better.
I was handling some purchases and ask this customer to provide me a screenshot of the receipt.
Send him steps on how to do it and a video demonstration for Android devices.
Now the great part
HE PROCEEDS TO SCAN HIS PHONE SCREEN WITH A SCANNER, PRINTS THE IMAGE AND THEN TAKES A PICTURE OF THE PRINTED FILE AND SENDS IT. HOW THE FUCK SHOULD I READ ANYTHING THERE YOU FUCKING TOMATO?!?!
HE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND HOW TO TO TAKE THE SCREENSHOT!!!5 -
What.. the actual... fuuuuuck?!
Browsing through changes on TFS (yeah, yeah boo me for using TFS instead of git if you like, I don't care, most people use/prefer TFS here, so I conform 'to the standards'..)
Anyhow, going through changes, looking for the one where some comment appeared..
'a wild comment appeared'.. tadaaah!
Checked the rest of changes.. Hm.. Someone did a validity check.. that returns the 'false' if not passed.
// OK, great! They are finally testing their shit and fixing stuff..
But apparently then they decided it is OK to do all the shit anyways.. so WTF?!
Why even bother validating it?! Oh yeah, forgot... cuz in case it returned false YOU WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO LET SOME STUFF HAPPEN!! But they weren't assigned with that exact task I guess..
TO DO:
- do the validation algo // fml, not going into how fucked up that was written..but it was horrible!
- do validity check where appropriate/needed
- test validity check and that it doesn't break functionality
+ check if the validation actually logically works?! nope, not on my to do list, not my job..
All done, better not actually do something that requires you to think.. :\
How the fuck that happened?! How can one person be assigned to check if something is stupid/wrong?! and when checking (&confirming) still lets the customer do that shit anyways?! What's the point?! O.O13 -
WTF, Google?! Get your shit together!! No one wants another GUI disaster makeover which leads us from bad to worse.
Every time I log into g+ or gmail, the whole flippin GUI has changed.. OK, it might be just my taste for simplicity, but I do not think a 'better GUI' should make you feel like an ape trying to code.. :\
If people with programming skills can't use it 'out of the box' & without googling stuff like "where did you hid the new email button", how the f do other people who are IT inept supposed to use it!? OR is it just me?! If it's just me, I'll shut up and love the new GUI.. otherwise: juck!!
#itSucksToBeOnTheOtherSideOfTheCode :\9 -
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO TRANSLATE PULL REQUEST TO GERMAN?
According to one of my teachers I have to translate this in a coding guideline otherwise other devs might not be able to follow the procedure...
I asked him how he would translate it and he could not give me a proper answer... describe it he said...
How the fuck does it improve my guidelines if I describe PR!!!
And if your not capable of doing it better how should I know I have to do it!
Sorry I looked at an old exam and got triggered when I saw the correction21 -
How can some developers send emails like "I did <x> and <y> right, but I still have an error!" with NO copy/paste of the error? Come on, you hate user emails that just say "Your site doesn't work." You should know better.
I'm going to just start answering with "Wow, that sucks, and you did everything right, huh? It must just hate you." I shouldn't have to go force you to tell me what the problem actually is at that basic level.
I used to think this was a user thing. We wouldn't do that... hah, lost user, oh well, that's why we're helping them. Apparently it's not.6 -
You know how, sometimes, you start being tooooo proactive and implement stuff even though your boss never told you to do it? Well, that happened at my previous job, and apparently almost everyone at the team questioned the changes and made me look like the fool I was. That day, I learned that you should never implement stuff that wasn't asked... And it was humbling, since I was an arrogant fuck and basically I was speaking loudly and denied the criticism... But today, I'm better, I know how and when to shut up, and I accept criticism now.2

How comes companies don't give a shit abt onboarding?! The better your onboarding processes the faster the people you hired become productive?? Should never take me three weeks jus to get access...and when I do it's a problem ...should be seamless
At least that's what makes sense to me2 -
How do you usually learn a new language?
My way is to start a project, then figure it out as I go.
I find that books and tutorials are usually better reserved for learning concepts or frameworks.2 -
Dear Swift, we have to break up. I’ve found a new language to love. Oh don’t act so surprised, you know our relationship was on shaky ground. You never let me have any fun. You’re always telling me what to do and how to do it and I’ve had enough. You treat me like a child, and I’m moving on.
Things were good in the beginning, and you may have impressed me with your automatic reference counting, but my new language can do that too, and so much more, and does it faster than you could ever imagine. You see unlike you, my new language doesn’t boss me around. It *trusts* me, Swift. That’s the one thing you never could understand. I need to be trusted; and know that I can trust in you.
Well I can’t. Not anymore, Swift. It’s over. My new language just treats me better than you ever could. I’m sorry it came to this but I deserve better than you Swift. We’ve both known this for a long time.
I wish you the best, but you probably shouldn’t call.
I’m with Rust now.1 -
The more I learn about programming the more terrified I become about having huge knowledge gaps and learning something wrong by possibly making wrong assumptions about how certain things work or by falling on bad tutorials. I'm constantly hyped about coding, and at the same time I always feel I will never be able to say confidently "I know how to code".
How the hell do you make sure you are learning programming correctly as a self taught? Or do i just have to accept that no matter how and what I code there will always be a better way to do it, resulting in me constantly feeling as a low-skilled coder?3 -
Almost all my family think I'm free tech support.
My dad knows what I do and he's proud because I finished uni (he didn't), he sometimes asks for help (he repairs electronic stuff) and I try as hard as possible to be useful (it's fun!). He knows that (most of the time) I'm working when I'm in my laptop, so he doesn't bother me, he kindly asks if he needs help with something.
My brother's studying the same I did, he's doing fine. I think better than me when I started.
My sister knows that I can repair her phone/laptop but she asks me to do it whenever I have free time and how she can avoid to "damage" it again.
My friends think I'm awesome, but I'm in constant stress (thanks imposter syndrome!).
My dog, he just barks and smiles whenever I'm around and he thinks I'm awesome, so I have that going on for me, which is nice.

The worst architecture I've seen is WordPress.
How can you be so drunk to design such a filthy mess?
In some way PHP might be to blame. Its API is a fucking mess as well and may have stirred WP developers in this puke around so they couldn't come up with a better CMS architecture.
Don't get me wrong. I do love PHP. But only in it's OO form with namespaces and type hints and composer dependencies.
I've seen enough of PHP functional programming and it still haunts me.7 -
This incident is from my college days.....
I saw one of my friend was arguing with his project partner. He was pretending to know everything in programming better than his partner.
Just for fun, I asked him to implement single linked list by using arrays/pointers (I gave him 20 mins and told him to do in any programming language he is familiar with). He was not able to do, so I suggested him to use Google and see if he can find something which can help him with implementation....
Within 10 min he came with a solution which was working fine. So I asked how does he implemented, and what does the methods do.... As expected, he was blank and I got to know he copied entire solution from Stackoverflow.....
A thought came in my mind:
Just by knowing copy/paste won't make you a programmer....... <\>4 -
TL;DR - Developers, do not buy HP Stream models laptop unless they are selling at $1.
Cannot even handle Sublime + Firefox + LAMP use case well. On lubuntu OS with literally nothing else on it. Sublime crashes every hour.
Now I am learning how to code using other tools before I can buy a better replacement for it. Failure with gedit; very slow and sluggish. Currently trying Geany.
It's a pain in the ass to learn new tool especially when you are so accustomed to something. 😣12 -
My team lead be like when we're in a meeting with the boss:
He: I'll have a working session with her, we'll brainstorm on how to come up with a better design and improve such and such feature, once that's done, we would call you to have another meeting.
Boss: sounds good, I'm looking forward to it.
Me: *internally rolls eyes...*
He: thank you everyone.
.
*meeting done*
.
.
.
couple of minutes later, I get a message from him:
He: hey, it turns out I'm busy and I can't have that session with you, do come up with a new idea/design and share it with me.
Me: .... *fuck you, like you didn't know you were busy before making that fake promise*
.
.
.
The fucker will take credit again for things he didn't do.8 -
Main language, do people have such a thing? Some quixotic shit about various languages I use:
C#: Microsoft
F#: never quite committing to 100% functional paradigms while still being one of the most enjoyable langs I use
Java: null handling via optional and maybes are ugly, but better than it was
C++: surprisingly functional in 2020
Haskell: no one else seems to ❤️ it, despite it being fucking beautiful
Kotlin: Ternary warfare, Czech sports opinions on how languages should work
Clojure: parenthetical scoping makes me far happier than it should
Typescript: makes ever more sense as it changes7 -
Should I care about privacy anymore ?
I had to switch to windows from Ubuntu in my laptop because of driver related issues.
Everytime I use Windows , I feel uneasy because of the data it collects but at the same time I am happy that I can play a couple of video games , my battery life is better and my display is better.
I own an Android phone , and no matter how many add ons I use , or VPN , I know that Google gets sufficient amount of data to know a lot about me.
It's getting harder and harder to keep my data private and it's becoming inconvenient as well.
In my country almost everyone I talk to uses Whatsapp. I removed my Whatsapp account for a few days and I barely talked to anyone and it was not a good feeling.
My point is , is fighting for privacy worth it ? How much inconvenience are we ready to accept ? Can I do anything to keep my data private and still use convenient services ? Please enlighten me .21 -
Senior developer just showed me a "competitor" that seems to do things waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than us on his web site and was telling me:
Senior: damn, I wish I could figure out how they do this. I've been trying for so long...
I write the URL on chrome with dev tools open and literally the first thing that comes on the console is a nice greeting from their devs with links to they github repositories, ends up they are open source...
And now I'm here thinking "WTF!!!! WHY ARE WE NOT DOING THINGS THIS WAY?"3 -
Going through the typical phase of being depressed because of feeling underdeveloped skill wise and ignorant knowledge wise; despite how much I learn. God, spent 3 days on a recursive dynamic programming problem and couldn't implement it right... then I decided to glance at someones solution on github and turns out he did what I couldn't do in 70+ lines of code in 20. Sigh, just want to right concise and clear code and become a better programmer all together, but that obviously takes time. For the mean time I am feeling quite defeated.9
-
Can't stand it when devs who never bother to do anything / don't pull their weight etc. suddenly come out with:
"Ooh I'm really feeling the imposter syndrome right now, I feel like everyone around me is just leagues ahead of me and I shouldn't be here"
...then wait for everyone to tell them how amazing they are, how they're a critical part of the team etc.
No mate, imposter syndrome is a thing, but so is being a genuine waste of everyone's time. I'm not talking about having bad days, I'm talking about your work output being practically zilch for the past half a year or so because you're "not too familiar with the framework", then going after this pity party approach. As a senior dev, it's kinda insulting to all the great junior and mid level devs who do a better job while being paid considerably less.4 -
What would you change if you were the owner of a site like devrant?
I've been in devrant for weeks now and the thing I like the most of it is the community (at least most of it).
If you are going through a bad time, they wish you well.
People here also seem to have very decent work experience.
In general, they seem to be open towards other technologies and honest about their shortcomings.
I also like that the site (for better or worse) is not insanely moderated.
For example, in reddit, it's very easy to get a post removed because it doesn't abide to the rules. They can be rudiculous strict, and mods can be trigger happy.
I'm not denying the existence of any moderation here, but for example I've seen some pretty graphic sexual comments, and I appreciate that anything goes (except being a dick ofc).
And I guess that the fact that the community is so chill has to do with that, there's not a huge need for moderation (unless I'm totally oblivious).
But how do you keep a community like that?
I've seen people complaining about the influx of new users and the spam of shitty memes.
How do you keep devrant cool while letting new people join?
I think a necessary thing is that you separate the people into 'universes' and each universe has a limit of x users. And somehow the users are distributed in a way that the average level of 'user likes the universe they're in' is maximum.
Now, how do you create that? Not sure, maybe you let users vote whether they like the other users or not (such votes being hidden to others ofc) and let users switch unis if they don't like them.
What ideas do you have?8 -
Hello everyone, first time ranter here! I have been studying Computer Science for 2 years starting September. The program introduced me to Java,HTML,CSS, JS and php. I feel like even though I am currently studying this I still do not "know" how to code. For example when I look at my classmates when they code it all seems so effortless and smooth, if they run into an issue they will usually solve it within the hour where as when I run into an issue I struggle to even see what the problem is. So the real point of this rant is, how do I improve? I am currently doing the #100daysofcode to get better but sometimes I feel so far away from calling myself a "developer" what is your road to the "developer" title? did you struggle as much as I am at the moment? or did you just sail into it like my classmates?14
-
So I promised myself some down time this weekend since I usually end up working all night and in a blink my weekend is over. I also declined going out for better 'relaxation'. Here's how it's going so far...
>Gets home. Hmmm what should I do I can do anything! *thinking*
>Pours a stiff whiskey
>Trys watching something as well as playing a game, gets bored of each and abandons them.
>Opens a dev newsletter
>*blinks*
>Realizes I'm elbow deep in some repo... starting to feel inspired.
>Decides to code something "fun"
>Uses "Well as long as I'm not *working*" to justify his addiction.
I'm really not sure what I did for fun before I started coding. It ruined things by being so damn enjoyable and ultimatley many other things became well... less fun.
This is what addiction looks like.2 -
"Couldn't have written it better myself"
"You might be Taylor Swift because damn you commit often"
"These commit messages are so helpful i could find my way through the Paris catacombs with them"
"Damn we might need to open-source this... How are people living without it??"
"It would be interesting to see if everyone feels as comfortable with this UI as i do"
"Doesn't matter how long this takes, just do it the way you do it." -
Employer uses IBM Software, which forces me to use Eclipse. I hate eclipse. Hate is a hard word. I'd never say, I really 'hate' a person. But eclipse, eclipse is what I hate. I can look at my smartwatch and see my heartrate rising, just thinking of how the fuck any developer on this crappy planet would ship that bullshit IDE. That saying, I'm totally fine with some bugs, using windows and so on, but eclipse... Is this a get-more-contributors strategy? Holy moly it really kills me. Hey, let's just open that maven Proj.. Oh, crash. Hey, let's install that "bug-free" version of the maven-integratio... Oh, crash. Let's do a global search over my worksp.. Oh, freezed. Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! How can this be legal? I mean, seriously, most junoir devs I know, just use Eclipse, because they don't know of any other "better" IDE (VIM would be better, even notepad). Is there anyone sucking professors cocks / vaginas to get them introduce that crap IDE to students?2

I have a VP constantly harassing my people about some reports that we need to do as per federal law.
The thing is, these live inside of such system that I get to see exactly how many "hits" they get on a yearly basis. The only traffic we have on those sections is of people going ahead and putting the information from our reports there.
That's it, literally. Our user base does not go there. Federal agencies do not go there. No one gives two blips of shit about those sections. Yet she continuously acts like they are the most important thing in the fucking world. To make it better, I was told not to generate actual analytical data from said reports, since people with PHDs will come down on me to ask me who the fuck do I think I am from gauging them with such systems. So shit is a mute point on all fucking accounts.
I told my VP I can generate traffic information to let them know that shit is not really the most important thing in the fucking universe. His eyes glowed.
I don't want to see head rolls, but from staying till the next morning awake trying to give the best to our userbase, and just to be called out on shit like this as if I did not do enough for our people just.....well....it fucking hits man.
The worse part was me literally getting 30 minutes of sitting down after an all nighter, doing something for my users, to get to a meeting the next morning (I should not have driven there honestly) to hear this bitch complain about us not doing enough or not caring or whatever other bullshit she would spew.
I was livid, lack of sleep makes me dangerous. I turned to say something when my boss stopped me and took care of business. I seriously love this man. By all accounts and generational gaps a boomer, but one of the few good golden ones.
I just hate how unappreciated the realm of software development is by people that think that our shit is as simple as making a fucking powerpoint presentation.
Consolidate that with a director from another department taking all fucking glory during a major event of an application that I built by myself with 2 fucking weeks of no sleeping. And shit just gets glorious.
I have considered moving to other places, and heck, have gotten amazing offers, what with having a degree with a big fucking GPA and having the credentials of a senior, lead, full stack and manager role, the sky is the limit. But i know that if I leave then my users suffer, and I just can't fucking have that.
I have heard them speaking about doing something with X app that I built (with my department) I have even heard one of them saying "how is this made?" and a part of me hoped that it would be a good time to grab them and tell them of the field and the things that they can do. But I don't like announcing myself that way, always seemed to presumptuous, so I just smile, fuck yeah, my users are doing their thing with what I built to better their lives, what more can I have?
I have gotten criticisms from them, one recognized me, told me about his pain points and how it makes it hard for him to do what he must. Getting the data from the user base in an effort to make shit better for them drives me, my challenge being "how about this? better eh?"
But fucking execs man, think only of themselves, not the users, they forget about the users. Much like a shitty rock band forgetting about the music, about the fans.
I can't let that slide. But this fucking field. I sometimes fucking hate it, and I hate it because of the normies that don't understand and do not want to understand.
I do way too much, my guys do way too much and all I want is for the recognition to go to them. They do not need the ego boost, but to see my guys sitting in a meeting in which some dumb fuck is trying to drill us for taking to long, not doing something and what not, it fucking pisses me off. As their boss I always stand up and tell bitches off, but instead of learning, the bitches just keep pressing on their already defeated points.
Everything in human life gets fucking erradicated by: humans. People really do fucking suck.
I sometimes wish to go back, redo my diesel tech license and just work there, where I think one would be better of talking to an engine. But no, even then you get people, you have to interact with people, deal with people, and I am so far up my game and in my field that starting from scratch is a fucking mute point.
Maybe I need to keep fucking with stocks, get rich and just keep investing on bullshit. Whatever the fuck it takes me from having to feel the urge to choke a motherfucker in public.1 -
How I feel when im asked to add functionality to a project that was built like 10+ years ago and needs refactored in its entirety but the code base is so terrible that youre honestly better off just starting it from scratch but you are thrown into 5 other million things and there is no time to do it so you just shit out the bare minimum code that will not break the rest of the application.4
-
I have ADHD. If you don't know what that means, for me it makes me a better software engineer. I can't do repetitive, so my code is by definition DRY. If someone needs help, I'll notice and help because my brain can't filter out the emotion of someone struggling. I fixate on problems I don't know how to solve, I literally struggle to stop myself. The list goes on. But, at its heart, who gives a shit?
I'm a software engineer, and I'm good at what I do. Does anything else matter?17 -
Does anyone practise code reading and comprehension? If so, are you able to share your idea?
I try to find how to read code faster with retention and comprehension. It is much like speed reading, but I am reading code.
Here is my journey so far:
Stage 1:
When reading code, I literally each word in line as comment. I though it will help me to understand better. It did, but the retention was not strong enough.
Stage 2:
After reading each line, I will close my eyes for 1-2 seconds and do a reflection what I just read. Better understanding, but comprehension still not good.
Stage 3:
After reading each line, I use my own words to describe what it does and write down as comment. I found that I have better comprehension
Stage 4:
Constantly, remind myself to describe with my own words. this speeds up the reading and understanding.
To be honest, I am still trying.6 -
Recently I've started thinking about how we are always told "No you can't do that" to everything. That feels like a theme in our industry.
I've also been thinking about how often people say well done to each other, or just comment that something is good in a pull request. Everything is always focused on bugs and mistakes - not good bits.
The first point conflicts with the idea that when using languages and frameworks you should follow their philosophy or you're gonna have a bad time - but in all other instances you mostly don't have wrong answers, just answers that can be better so a lot of stuff is opinion based.
I've decided to change my ways and focus just as much on good stuff as bad when I review code and to make sure I'm focusing just as much, if not more, when people do something good.
I think I do a good job, but I don't think I've been told I'm doing a good job or that anything specific is good more than a couple times in the last year - mostly in mandatory reviews. What about you?2 -
I watched some of markipliers videos back when I watched yt
I felt down and like I wasn't giving my best and stuff
Searched for "markiplier inspiration"
Marks video "believe in yourself" is just that
Inspirational af
Say what you want about him, I guess there are people who think he's about the money or stuff, but no matter how you look at it he is a good guy.

He has a kind heart, he is a fucking inspiration on himself, inspiration in person.
Comparing myself to myself, I still think I can do better, but that's also what he encourages, set your own goals and just try to be a bit better than yourself
Only compare yourself to your past self.
I may not be as great as I want to be, but I am a lot fucking better than I was a year ago.
And that's what it's all about.
I'm gonna try a bit harder as I go, I wanna BE BETTER as he says, I am going to be fucking better.

i've got my first job after getting out of college. not a great package. I'm learning more, will get experience. i have plans for freelancing and seek a better job. I'm an Indian.
what really upsets me is that I just discovered that I've no knowledge in finance. I'm feeling insecure, afraid and depressed. I'm browsing for some youtube channels, books and podcasts to get some some knowledge about finance and real estate.
all I have is a saving account in SBI bank, I just know how to take money out of it with my debit card and transfer money with online banking
how do u guys do ur finance, where do u invest. do u invest in stock market. insurance?? help me out. i'm fucked.
never thought i can be so stupid, I hate myself, never even thought I'll need financial intelligence.
are there more people like me.
i'm just so down and feeling suicidal.8 -
New office saga continues... SE1E05
I transitioned from a B2B to B2C role. Now the company and the product is entirely consumer facing.
Many or rather all are actively engineering the product to be more and more dystopian in nature.
Using concepts like FoMo, social validations, and other techniques to get users to spend more into consumerism in the name of building better experience.
It's the darkest shit I have seen so far. And this company is ethically a great one. I can only imagine how pathetic Meta and others would be.
I hate ny role. I hate how I have to do this for a living. Knowingly or unknowingly, I got myself here and absolutely hate where we are headed as a human race.
I don't like it anymore and I am only doing it as a job. No longer proud or excited of my job profile.
Fuck the impact, technology will be a catalyst for human extinction.
And with that, I found a good solution to my Mac 😏

Mgr: composer require. That's all you're allowed to do. I want you to manually go through our word press site, check which ones need an update. And do a composer require in the command line for each to update them.
Me: wouldn't it make more sense to just increment the version in the composer.json and then run update?
Mgr: no, you don't understand how composer works, it's very complicated. Just do require. Don't ever do update.
Me: *does it anyway (reverting later of course) and compares update vs require and their differences in the lock file*
I mean it looks like 'update' is updating important dependencies for each of the packages as well as the package itself... The 'require' just seems to download the package itself but no updates to dependencies for those packages.
But seriously is composer that complicated that I can't just do an 'update'?
I've been reading the composer documentation and it seems to be saying that update is the better way to go...
I'm doubting myself these days...12 -
So I help teach a class of high schoolers to program and I want to pose a question, what can I do to give & better more interesting presentations, and what should I avoid?
Today I gave a presentation and the first half of showing them some practical things you can do with Python didn’t go as well which I figured would be a little boring,
but the second half I showed them a script I wrote to install fonts in Linux and I essentially set it up so that I could rewrite it in front of the class and I walked them through the process of rewriting it to show how useful loops are and they really enjoyed watching the process, so I thought about doing more stuff like that where I just walk them through problems but Idk
Let me know what you think I could do better17 -
I don't get much spam, but when I do, I rant about how badly those mails are crafted.
I mean, yeah, for non-devs or typical old people, those badly made Google fake mails (that use the old Google logo, the logo in Times New Roman or something) or ISP / phone company mails with malicious attachments may look good enough.
But, seriously, if I were a dev paid to create spam mails, they would look like the real deal, if I may say so myself, as I would actually put some effort in them.
What do you think? Wouldn't spam made by real developers like us be "better"?
Maybe send some examples from inside your junk box 🤔3 -
Turns out a massive dev team saw that i tracked down the makers of the PoC PS3 N64 emulator and (successfully) asked for them to release their source and they stole my fucking summer project for themselves. I mean, that's how open-source works, and they'd do a way better job than me, but for fucks sake...5

I kind of just came to an insight that my computer is sort of my partner in crime.
I "teach" it how to do something that I'm probably better of not doing or should do in moderation... But then it gives me access to so much of the stuff, I spend a lot more time doing it... more effectively.
So I actually don't save much time because it makes it easier so I now do even more...
I would post some screenshots but its uhh..... NSFW... at least this one is.25 -
There are these type of costumers who think they better know how much time it takes to do something then me. They think because they can do a little SQL and VBA, they know what it takes to work on an E-Commerce Plattform. What’s wrong with this shitheads? How about some respect?
They tried to compare the integration of an Instagram wall with integrating automated product variations. They then proposed some plugins that i should use. Surprise the plugins are completely useless for the usecase.
I just want to hit them with their dumbness. In the face. Very hard.1 -

Not anti-man, curious about this particular problem:
Females have unique problems in the workplace and personal life yes, because of stereotypes.
I agree, I am a female. But when i read those articles about what we really go through, I really feel weak. I think if these many obstacles are present how am I supposed to do something without instinctively being influenced by the society.
It really felt better when I consider myself human not female.
What do you people do when you feel weakened by these impositions?9 -

Relatively new to programming. I have worked with c++ for about 7 months, worked with c# in unity to make games, created lots of different scripts and other programs using bash, python, racket and Java for class.
I am looking to become a video game developer, I work with unity and do lots of coding challenges on hackerrank.com and some other stuff. But I am wondering what I should do to really improve and am wondering what some of the vets out there would tell me to do, what kinds of projects to create, how to get better at programming as and whole andnd knowing more about the subject in general. Any help is appreciated, I'm looking to start 2017 on the right track to success!10 -
Did I ever tell anyone how much I hate phone interviews? I have had them where people were on speaker phone and I could hardly understand them, foreign accents I could not understand or people reading questions off of the internet. I usually have to do these while walking around the parking lot on my job. My hands and ears freezing in the cold or 100+ degrees in the summer. I just hate it. Now I feel better. Oh yeah I have a country accent so I am doomed from the start anyway. ByVal or ByRef ? Difference between abstract and interface? Here we go again.

So I got to thinking about computer systems and how they are all based on binary. So the math we perform is obviously based upon a binary approach. Then I started wondering if there was value in exploring math using a different base. I know in math we can shift things to a different domain to do things more efficiently (like Laplace transforms to get to the frequency domain to do freq based calcs, or quaternions to do various orientation calcs). I thought maybe a base 3 logic might do some calcs better. I searched and found that indeed some ternary computing systems had been built. I then searched for libraries that might employ ternary math as an exploration exercise. I didn't find anything except academic articles (few at that).
This idea of changing the base in the math (and possibly the frame of reference) is interesting. It is like searching for treasure and not being sure it even exists.

I sometimes feel like some people's comments on devrant are enough for a mental health crisis diagnosis. I wonder, how can we diagnose people through text? And can, let's say, ML do any better.
I mean; let's say for example abusive behaviors. This may be an online community but that doesn't stop some from abusing others, right? But the only form of communication here is text, right? What if you could diagnose... Not even that. What if you could inform a mental health expert about a toxic behavior online? We do have a lot of "internet policing" but we have no "internet mental health help" for toxic behaviors and attempts to mitigate that. I don't mean banning people. I mean literally in simplest form tag a psychotherapist in the convo.
Just thinking. :)13 -
I'm just super disappointed in people. A lot of people flaky and not as good as I think they are. I tend to be an idealist, and I believe in helping others to do a net positive. But what I find is that people just don't give a shit about anyone else except for themselves. If it's even a slightest inconvenience to them they won't do it. You ask for one little thing despite you helping them out a shit ton, and they won't do it for you.
Also, I'm so tired of people who always come up to me and talk big game about how we should work on a project together. But when shit hits the fan and I say let's do the work they don't do anything. Or I have to drag them along to get anything started.
Yeah, everybody is out for themselves, but I wish we were more kind to others and learn to take a hit to our own convenience every once in a while.
But maybe I should just find a better group of people to hang out with and fuck you all to my current group of friends. JK.
I'm going for a run to clear my head. Hopefully after I come back I'll be in a better mood.2 -

I'm one of those self improvement assholes. I want to always strive to be better and to see what works and what doesn't.
One way to keep track of how satisfied I am with my life, I have a prompt at 20:00 to self report a score, 1-5 how happy I am.
It's like a minimal journaling system. Sometimes I motivate why I feel like shit.
Does anyone here do something similar? Not counting your GitHub commits.
Do you track progress when doing things in some visual way? Projects, working out, whatever.

Hello, my name is ***** and I already had a few Old Fashions🥃
I've been chasing a big career and success since i was about 12.. the first 8 years of my career I did the same.
for the last two years i decided to slow down, I'm still keeping up with stuff and do a good job but I took a break from wanting to being the next Wozniak.
Im much happier and more relaxes now but I'm at a point where i really wanna do, be and achieve more..
My #1 goal in life is to build a family, having a wife and a few kids. (first gotta be able to talk to women though:/)
i have a very strong desire to have an impact on the world and society to build a life in which at least my (non existing) family could be happy and without worries. but i've no fucking clue how to achieve that. how to have an impact. i don't see a way as a software engineer anymore..
i feel lonely and lost without any fucking perspectives..
i feel like i was better off when i was chasing the big money..
i know dev rant is not the place to do this but i can't talk to my family and i wanted to share my emotions. been alone for 3 months now and it's also about my dev career, that's how i justify to post this to our community here😅4 -
I only finished my CS degree last year but while I was a student and after I got my degree I went for a few interviews and none of the companies really asked me what degree I have or didn't ask at all, some just asked what I was studying. All of the companies asked what I can do and what my skills are. If I can do it, they were happy to hire me even if I didn't have a degree.
So to answer the question, a degree is not useful if you still don't know how to program (for example) or if you don't know your field well. If you are good at what you do, you will earn crazy money with or without a degree.
I know a few people that don't have a CS degree but their programming skills are crazy good...probably much better than a uni graduate with a CS degree.3 -
Aaagh...... 2022 this year has been shity for real..
So its now 1 year and I've been a fullstack developer for this mid tech company as the only developer
so I've been trying to get these guys to hire a second developer. and try to also upgrade equipment and these guys didnt even bother to attend to my requests and during my evaluation meeting on friday these guys where down my neck about why projects are taking time to complete i MEAN WTF!!!!! told them its bcoz Im a 1 man army and most of the times Im chocked with the "any other duty" thing and how tha fuck do they expect them projects to be done on time
I'm the only developer some times i get sick 2weeks and where i left off is were i continue from and thats 2 weeks work of progress down the drain
I'm so fucking pieced off ryt now I feel like droping this shity job and find a much better organization
they want me to build them a developer department and they dont even equip me with the necessary tools to do so WTF do they think they are doing they think they know better than me?
so let them build their fucking dev department without me
this has been a fucking stressful experiance
wrote them a later to hire a second developer
I dont fucking care how they are going to do it
contracting or an internal dev if they dont in the next 3 months I fucking leaving this shit7 -
The company that I work for just opted for PHP in favor of Elixir, Node and Scala(Akka really) for building a high-concurrency system, because we have more people who work with PHP (mediocre skill really). How do we convince our team leads and higher-order beings by the hierarchy to try newer (or at least better suited) technologies? Good luck popening and pthreading stuff on this project I guess.9

Little brother wants learn programming and asked me if I could help him learn it.
"Sure, I'll show you how I learned it."
Gave him a book for starters to go through it. To have a slightly better time, I'll read his code and recommend some ways to go.
In my opinion it's important to learn to learn by yourself and learn to help yourself. Therefore I think this is kinda a good way to start with a bit of supervision from me.
What do u think of it, or how would you have done it?
I mean sure I could be some kind of teacher, but with a fulltime job + uni I don't really have time for that.4 -

# Do not refactor, it is a bad practice. YOLO
# Not understanding why or how something works is always good. YOLO
# Do not ever test your code yourself, just ask. YOLO
# No one is going to read your code, at any point don’t comment. YOLO
# Why do it the easy way when you can reinvent the wheel? Future-proofing is for pussies. YOLO
# Do not read the documentation. YOLO
# Do not waste time with gists. YOLO
# Do not write specs. YOLO also matches to YDD (YOLO DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT)
# Do not use naming conventions. YOLO
# Paying for online tutorials is always better than just searching and reading. YOLO
# You always use production as an environment. YOLO
# Don’t describe what you’re trying to do, just ask random questions on how to do it. YOLO
# Don’t indent. YOLO
# Version control systems are for wussies. YOLO
# Developing on a system similar to the deployment system is for wussies! YOLO
# I don’t always test my code, but when I do, I do it in production. YOLO

So YOLO Driven Development isn’t your style? Okay, here are a few more hilarious IT methodologies to get on board with.
*The Pigeon Methodology*
Boss flies in, shits all over everything, then flies away.
*ADD (Asshole Driven Development)*
An old favourite, which outlines any team where the biggest jerk makes all the big decisions. Wisdom, process and logic are not the factory default.
*NDAD (No Developers Allowed in Decisions)*
Methodology Developers of all kinds are strictly forbidden when it comes to decisions regarding entire projects, from back end design to deadlines, because middle and top management know exactly what they want, how it should be done, and how long it will take.
*FDD (Fear Driven Development)*
The analysis paralysis that can slow an entire project down, with developments afraid to make mistakes, break the build, or cause bugs. The source of a developer’s anxiety could be attributed to a failure in sharing information, or by implicating that team members are replaceable.
*CYAE (Cover Your Ass Engineering)*
As Scott Berkun so eloquently put it, the driving force behind most individual efforts is making sure that when the shit hits the fan, you are not to blame.2 -
I hate it when we are discussing a feature and they ask me "what do you think?" after they said how would they go about it and i mention that i would do it differently and think that my way may be longer now but can pay off in the long run and they decline it.
What i hate even more is that after some period they revesit their decision again and come to conclusion that my way is better and now we (i) need to rewrite it but without acknowledging that i said it then and was the best solution.

I have this urge to get better at coding and software architecture and design. But fuck me if I'm not lazy about it.
All these crazy good books and lectures and here I am, doing jackshit to improve. Can't even finish my own personal projects. Bah.
I know how I'm supposed to go about it, how to keep engaged in a cycle of personal betterment. I lack self-discipline to do it though... Tried meditation for a time, but haven't really stuck to it. Currently trying to follow stoics (Seneca, Marcus Aurelius and some others), but the mindset is not so easy to adopt, and the practical philosophies even harder.
Oh well. Life is hard. Blah-blah-blah. Thanks for reading. Just wanted to vent, really.8 -
So I'm looking at the jobs available and the jobs I'm applying for and realizing that even though I'm never gonna use the 70+ languages (exaggeration) in daily work for any of these prospective employers, I'd better have those languages (and 5+ years of experience in each) just because HR is keyword happy about stuff they know nothing about.
So how do you manage to get 5+ years of experience in something you don't have 5+ years of experience in so that you can get a job where you don't actually need 5+ years of experience in those things anyway? Do I just hit up LinkedIn Learning and start grinding away on tutorials, then stick their "certifications" on my resume? For what purpose if it's stuff I can't get the needed experience in because I don't already have 5+ years of it?
How did I ever get a job in my field if, according to HR drones, I don't have any experience in what I'm doing now?12 -
Fellow C# programmers, how often do you use #region in your projects and how important do you think it is?
I have found myself using it increasingly. It works great for me and I feel that I can structure my code better.10 -
Guys, how often do you feel inferior to your colleagues? I'm just thinking since I've just finished first year of uni, and although I got a solid top grade, I can't help but feel that every other person in the year is a much better programmer and it kinda makes me feel like a fraud. Anybody else in university/school feel like that?10

How much does one's strength in computer programming dictate their worth? I see such clever programs that do things far better than I could ever do, and then wonder how can I compete with that?3

Whenever I cancel out old chunks of code that do not serve their function anymore, or that I commented out in early phases to make space for better functions, I feel dead inside. It's almost like if I was saying goodbye to a very old friend, who supported me through the project and reminded me of how I started it.
Than I notice how stupid and/or inelegant that chunk was, and feel better. 😂 -
Everyday strugle.
Go to work, go home all motivated like: oh once I'm home I can do this and that to finish my work, and it's fun and interesting. Or I vould study, or clean up, I'm totally gonna do something usefull!

Ohhhh look league of legends! Or bed! I'm too exhausted to do anything usefull. Better chill.

Anyone else?
Anyone got advice for how to combat this? T_T5 -
I always find reading small configuration files way more difficult than reading a big codebase.
I accept config files do really help in writing a better flexible code and separating the logic and settings but always offer a stiff learning curve.
And often, people make changes in config either unintentionally or with half knowledge which works in local but later blows up the entire system.
Wondering how config files can be presented in a way that the learning curve is minimal and the understandability of its impact is more visible.
I do really like annotations or decorators which provides a closer visibility between config and code. -
Been worrying about this for a few weeks now.
As a junior dev, how do I continue to improve (with respect to coding style, technique, etc.) when my seniors are only slightly better than me in a technical regard? I feel like I'm improving at a drastically slower pace than when I first started.

My employer found out that I used to do WordPress development. Now I have to setup and maintain the company blog, including custom theme and plugin development. And I don't get paid extra to do this shit.
On the plus side, it might give me better visibility within the office as the blog would be written by VP, directors and other senior folks. I'll have more interaction with them.
I'm curious to see how this goes.1 -

- Is it rewarding(in terms of salary/timings/other stuff)?
- Does it has a good career growth?
- How hard is the work for a fresher in this?
- How much mentor support does a fresher gets in this?
- How much salaries are there in this?
- how true do you find the believe that software testing will get automated and jobs in this area will get reduced in future?

So I kinda started a project just a week or two ago, essentially a CSV to spreadsheet converter that could also do formatting, so you wouldn't have to do all the formatting after you convert it to a spreadsheet. But now I just kinda think that it's not a very good idea and I'd just be wasting my time with it.
I was in the middle of looking through some of the source for LibreOffice to kinda understand how the files are converted and everything. But now I think I would be using my time better doing something else. Oh well.2 -
Start my days at 6am local to be able to have an entire days’ worth of access to my team because they’re all East Coast and I’m Pacific. And then work until it’s 5pm local regularly because I lose track of time. I love when devs bitch about the size of PRs on a very standard sized one. They're all related changes that can't be broken up. Do you want the app to be broken between PRs? He spent more time bitching about the size of the diff and telling me how he does it better instead of just reviewing the code. A tip or an ask is one thing, this was a wall of text.
Oh and he still didn't approve the PR, which I know he looked at, and didn't leave any blocking comments.4 -
Have you ever hit a wall? Like you know what you want to do, you know how to do it but it will not work for absolutely no reason you can see? I've spent the better part of 5 hours trying to add an image upload to my node app and have nothing to show for it. I've tried multiple packages to no avail. I've deleted everything and started over so many times I've lost track. The only thing I can think of doing now is bashing my head off the keyboard and hope that spews out some magical code that will fix my problem.5

So...
I had to do a minor project for this semester. It was to be made in a group of two people and everything ( work ) was shared between the both of them.
I had a friend who was my partner ( faculties decided who will be in each group ). She doesn’t like programming nor does she come to college but I hoped she would do fine and be helpful ( she is a decent person actually ).
She never bothered to come to college, or even ask how the project was going... except one day before presentation 😒😑.
Thankfully, my guide removed her as my partner... she was detained because of extremely low attendance... and I had to work alone... that was much better though 😁.
Minor project was kinda fun by the way... and since I did it alone, I was able to do it at my own pace and without any issue of synchronization between partners ☺️☺️4 -
Hello devRant!
Man its been a while, i havent logged in here in like 4 years.
Recently ive been getting into home-labbing, and i thought to myself
"all of these people on youtube/reddit run Plex on pre-built NASs that have awful celerons and whatnot, we can do much better!"
And by "much better" i meant a bare metal k8s cluster.
My hybris knows no bounds apparently.
Turns out this shit is quite hard.
Really gives u an appreciation of just how much stuff cloud providers magically abstract away....
My final goal is to run stableDiffusion on this thing, even know i know full-well the moment i try Nvidia will fuck me raw with some hidden enterprise subscrition :) -
I can't recall one single person I can call a mentor, however...
When I first started as a developer I had a senior to work with... I knew close to anything but I was always good at research and learning on my own... But we used an asp.net framework, it was new and there was little to no useful information, only basics... When I asked the senior (let's call him Joe) for help he gave me a quick answer:
Joe: Go to file xx, there's an example of what you need there...
Me: Well, been there and that's great but it doesn't help...
Everytime I was stucked during my first week it was always some sort of the same, so I insisted this time...
Me: so, Joe... I'm really stuck on this one, can you give it a look?
Joe: I know, I've been researching a way to do it for an hour now and can't get it either...
Me: wow! Thanks... But I thought you were an expert on this...
Joe: not really, never used it before. It's as new to me as it is to you! :)
So, that switched me from "this fucking weasel won't help me for shit" to "well, let's help each other"
We became good friends, always challenging each other and from that day on I stopped asking for help, and asking where can I help others...
I had great and greatly bad colleague and seniors. Each one thought me something either what to do or what not to do, how to act or not, how to tackle problems, how to teach...
Everyone I have worked with, worked for or trained is a mentor of mine. Even those I feel like I failed training thought me how to do better next time...
Thank you guys for being grate... Thank you assholes for teaching me how to send a guy go fuck himself! Good luck for those who get stucked with me -

I usually don't like posting non rant stuff here but I need help.
How do you usually design your service communication class?
I am working on a mobile app which contains talking to a REST service, I usually put all network calls in one class. Down side if it becomes a big class it becomes a pain to maintain. Any thoughts?
For a backend service I usually go with Repository design and it is working out well for me. But for mobile Apps I'd like to see if there is a better approach4 -
My love for you I can't describe it,
so I dont't even try and hide it.
Dev. you are my one true passion
you are always there to teach me a new lesson.
Some missing semicolon;
I have searched for you soo long.
Or was it a wrong indent,
ah f**k it was the missing increment.
Thinking through endless loops
in while, for and even do form,
just that my programs do a little better perform.
You give me the possibility to express myself as who I am and who I want to be,
in so many languages, from java, JS, GO, python and even C.
You give me bugs and issues that I track,
from motivation for you I never lack.
There are projects out there, where I contribute to
oh what a beauty are you.
And now you even bring fun into my life
with devrant, I now know how to survive.
How to survive client meetings and non devs around me,
oh how much stupidity I there see.

I tried to sort out a basic Multi layer neural network last night....by hand, just to prove that I was able to do the math by myself and understand that I have the intuition in control rather than just rely on Tensorflow or Pytorch to do shit for me.
I stayed up till 3 in the morning and woke up having nothing but dreams about the endeavor. Shitty part is that i couldn't stop dreaming about partial derivatives and how shit it was that I sucked at them in HS and uni. I get them now, but fuck I just feel that I could have done so much better at uni instead of passing my math classes with 80% to 90% of the grade. I feel as if I was slacking all thanks to being damn near mathematically dyslexic3 -
Computer! I live in a state of constant mental exhaustion. What does this mean?
*BEEP-BOOP*. IT MEANS YOU'RE STRESSED, BITCH.
Interesting. How do I get rid of this... "stress" you speak of?
*BEEP-BOOP*. GO OUT, BITCH. SEE NATURE, BITCH. CONNECT WITH HUMAN BEINGS, BITCH.
Oh, fuck no, that's just not going to happen. Any other tips?
*BEEP-BOOP*. STOP USING DRUGS, BITCH. YOU DRINK TOO MUCH COFFEE, BITCH.
Well, fuck me, I can't do that either; guess I'll just take this with me to the grave. Thanks anyway, computer.
*BEEP-BOOP*. YOU'RE WELCOME, BITCH. YOU'RE GOING TO DIE, BITCH.
Yes, I hope as much. The sooner the better.5 -
I HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION.
i need advice.
is it better that i study during the day for college until 12pm (midnight) and then work on my own project from 12pm till 4-5am, go to sleep and wake up around 9-10am so thats 4-7h of sleep each day. the only exception would be tuesday bc i gotta wake up for college at 6am.
so i would be working on my project 6 days for about 4-5h per week.
i plan to do this for 2 months.
so: day shift - college study
night shift - my work
please help me organize my time.
now, im thinking about long term effects on this. its going to be pain. but i am in pain each day so i no longer feel pain. i will be exhausted as fuck. i am fully conscious of what is awaiting for me if i decide to do this.
here is my question. am i going to get a burnout from this? am i going to look physically different in 2 months (in a bad way)? am i going to be mentally worse? am i going to get really skinny? this would basically be a work of 19-20h for 6 days per week for 2 months. that is approximately 114-120h work week minus tuesday.
i have to be mentally equipped for this so i plan to do home workouts in night shift session in order to prevent burnouts. I'll do walks/jogs too in day shift for mental cooldowns. the most important thing for me is NOT TO GET A BURNOUT AT ALL COSTS DURING THIS PERIOD OF TIME NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
i need serious advice on how to do this right AND AVOID BURNOUTS AT ALL COST.
i MUST stay operational mentally for the next 2 months.
please list the things i should DO and NOT do so this can be achievable.13 -
When I started doing frontend development, I was quite shocked with how people managed to cowboy code their way into building fully functional products with a decent paying client base.
I am talking about fully function SaaS with payment gateway and all, but no version control beyond full backup copies, and spaghetti code everywhere you can literally bring the website down trying to change the homepage design.
... and the startups that managed to do better, some of them forgot the .git on production exposing their entire source code *facepalm* -
For my graduate level people(aka Masters degree students or holders)
How normal would you say that: giving dense ass lectures in NN with absolutely NO practical examples and just a fuckload of theory + 1 simulation project in Pytorch in which a robot is to detect collisions is?
is it normal? i mean I knew about Pytorch from a very shallow overview, but these assholes gave that project and expected it completed in a week with a fuckload of dense ass lectures and no practical exmaples.
I know school is supposed to be hard, that is not my gripe, but in yalls experience are teachers more descriptive and fun in other institutions? do I just have shit luck with teachers? I don't feel like wasting my money. If your experience was better then let me know, cuz I want education yes, but i want it better.4 -
Anyone in here have experience with UML in the real entreprise world?
As a student I've learned a lot about documentation and software architectural design, I've worked 3 different places and worked with customers that were developers and all of them seemed to not really do architecture and documentation that well. Personally I find having an overview/guideline for bigger project really helpful
how come you don't see better software documentation and UML out there?
Maybe I just haven't found the right place yet2 -
Me: trying to do any simple fucking project
Me: cant figure out how to do something simple or cant figure out how to start or how something should work.
Me *Looks up problem* (everytime...)
results: SOMETHING I WOULD NEVER HAVE FUCKING THOUGHT OF.
Am I just a shitty programmer, a shitty learner, or just not cut out for this? because I fucking Love this field. this is the only thing I ever want to do. BUT I CANT FIGURE ANYTHING OUT FOR THE LIFE OF ME EVEN WITH LANGUAGES IM GOOD AT!! WHICH IS JUST PYTHON AND IM STILL SHIT AT THAT.
I TRY TO DO PROJECTS WITH JS, OR C, OR PYTHON PICK WHICHEVER ONE. AND I NEVER KNOW HOW I SHOULD START IT, AND IF I LOOK UP HOW TO DO IT ITS SO MUCH LONGER AND COOLER AND BETTER THAN MY DUMBASS WOULD HAVE DONE (and longer in a good way because its well thought out and works)
HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET A REAL JOB IN THE FIELD IF I CANT MAKE THE RANDOM IDEAS THAT I SEE ON THE INTERNET AND WHY CANT I MAKE THEM AS GREAT OR LONG AND SHIT ON MY OWN. SO MANY PEOPLE CAN WRITE SO MANY LINES OF CODE AND FUNCTIONS AND ALL THIS SHIT THAT WORKS AND YEAH THEY LOOK UP SOME PROBLEMS BUT NOT HOW TO FUCKING DO THE ENTIRE THING LIKE SOME FUCKING RETARD

Anyone have professional advice for a relatively new and young dev (me) on how to develop a cross platform app for what is effectively a startup?
I’ve basically been indecisive over the past few months and I thought I’d decided on Xamarin but flutter looks better and more productive and ughhhhh
I don’t really know what to pick and I want to do this right the first time.7 -
The lack of community support for NGINX is horrible (though it is getting better).
I was an NGINX disciple from the beginning; I switched over from Apache as soon as I found it and used it everywhere. The issue with that is that most services only provided Apache configuration files, forcing me to do my own research and translate them.
Thankfully the NGINX community has done a lot of work already; I was able to find a lot of the configurations I needed online, but I also spent a lot of time learning how to use it. Now, if you give me a few hours, I have the knowledge and resources to make it do whatever you need it to do (within reason, of course).2 -
Dear notebook manufacturers,
do you ever fucking think of how users actually use your notebooks in a company? Almost every company makes use of docking stations. Sooo... Instead of killing my battery over time by being constantly connected to power via the docking station. What do you think of doing some kind of scheduled/more intelligent charging or a charging range? I mean I dont stare 4 hours a day onto my 14 inch notebook display and then think "Oh I need to charge, better use my docking station" and go charging it for 90 minutes whilst staring at two 4k monitors and then unplug everything. My notebook now lives for 20 minutes without a power source... I cant even do proper presentations without using power cable... Please... Do something...
Yeah they will never see this. Just asking myself how you can develop a product do far away from the actual customer23 -
How do you guys get better at programming?
I'm very new to this sphere and currently I'm learning C++ (think strings, bools and early stages of if/else) due to university course and I have fun with it during labs, but when I have to do something by myself from scratch, I reach a certain point and then I get stuck. I try re-reading the lectures but I can't find appropriate solution for the issues I face.
Do I keep doing simple tasks or do I just watch/read guides or tutorials? What is your input on the matter, fellows? :)4 -
I chose Network/Cyber Security because it was my internship experience and they were willing to pay me good money to stay on... No but seriously I am much better at understanding how complex systems work than coding them. This job, as stressful as it is, is a different kind of stressful that the deadline-fraught jobs of software developers worldwide.
And i can do it fully remote.2 -
Uhmm. How do you guys write your resume? I mean, there seems to be a lot of ways and taboos on writing one, some say it shouldn't be more than 2 pages. But in some domain, the longer the better. As a software developer how should it look? Some are project-oriented others opt for work-company-experience-oriented.5

I have a buying dilemma.
Do I buy a new phone, laptop, or desktop?
Phone: I just want a better camera so I don't have to spend time photoshopping the RAWS manually. Everything else is fine, it's rooted and had no bloatware, have external powerpak
laptop/desktop: my current laptop is usable but it someone had boot error. Feels like 1 day it will just die, dunno when.
Desktop n laptop are same price and have 2TB HD, 16GB RAM, i7
Laptop also has 256SSD.
Desktop I think has better GFX and was thinking I could just swap my laptops current SSD (also 256GB) and put it in as the primary, tho not sure how.
I usually go by don't buy this stuff until u need it (Moore's Law) but should I buy for just the sake of convenience/upgrade?7 -
I've seen far worse people doing what I'm doing, applying terrible practices and still being valued af.
Even if I do smth wrong after doing all the research and alternatives' analysis I know I'll do a proper post-mortem RCA, document it and learn from it, as a result I'll make a better choice to fix the problem and I'll know better next time.
I think I'm alright compared to them. So I don't wory about being an impostor.
Learning by good examples is a good approach. Learning by bad ones might be even better. The "good ones" are yet to fail and be replaced by better (or worse) ones. The "bad ones" are already failing and you can learn WHY you should not be doing it like that and HOW should you do instead to solve the problem.
Learning from good examples only works well if you know the back-story, all the WHYs and HOWs. People usually don't :) -
Happy New year
May you have a year that is filled with love and bugs, laughter and debugging , brightness and dark theme , hope and distro hopping and little less windows vs linux shit 😂 please arch guys you too 🙄😝
Wish you all a great year 😅😛
I rarely post anything but I'm pretty active reading every shit post here. we fucking have a great community here. Few people are going through some real shit , hey you, things will get better don't lose hope but don't just wait on it , things don't ever get better by just wishing. Do what has to be done no matter how hard that decision can be.
Cut all those toxic people from your life doesn't matter who they're. You all deserve better
Believe in yourself. Everyone is going through some real shit. Keep fighting. Live for yourself.
You got only one life live upto your fill potential.
Regret is the worst thing so do whatever the fuck you want to do.
Never give up doesn't matter what you're going through.
And in the end may you "live" all the days of your life. -
I wanna make a mobile app. I just don’t know what to do. I was thinking on a study app , but my mockups were basically a ripoff from an app i used some time ago (funny how we think we can do better, but end up with the same shit). So now, back to square one :/
Any ideas? Anyone needing a very willing developer ?3 -
@college project submission
Teacher:once done print all your codebase and come with to class
Me:But sir there are better ways of submitting our code.
Teacher :what do you suggest
Me:we can a repo such as bitbucket or github
Teacher:I got no idea of that you send the code using Gmail or just print the code for your grading.
Me:for Christ sake how will I send all my android files through Gmail.4 -
New management asked us to do an impossible task at work. Launching a campaign with no planning and destined for an absolute disaster. Being me and how I never approved of the new management, I blew up. Guess they will either start paying me better or kick me out.
P.s. they can't function without me. At all. Literally. Impossible. Becayse I am the only one who bothered to join their team. They begged me. Because they know they're useless. And after 25 years. Their ship is literally gonna sink within a year if I leave.4 -
My dad needs my help with an excel sheet and calls me "Hey, need your help to do X, but this computer doesn't allow me to do, how can i do it?"
Me, who has already used skype, teamviewer and (Wahtsapp) video call several times (him too!) and got things done faster this way:"let's do a video call (whatsapp) so you can show me and i can help you better" (my dad thinks teamviewer is too complicated to use)
my dad "oh come on please, i don't have time for this, let's do it this way!"
After i tried to explain him that it would take far more time on the phone, needing him to explain what he sees, telling him the advantages of a video call right now, he ended like "ok forget about it!"
as he said that i kinda fell in a rage, quit the call myself and almost threw the phone against smth.
Seriously how hard can it be??? it's just few phone taps away😥, i would have even proposed to video call him myself to make things easier for him! But he prefers the classical-phone-way which every time takes half an hour just to understand where he's at.
It's just frustrating every time...2 -
Where and How do you make developer friends.
My coworkers are smart and decent developers but they learned on the job for the job.
But they're not interested in discussing improvements to legacy projects that barely still work until they break and we need to rush to recreate them 'better'.
or sit on a call on the weekend working on spontaneous personal projects that usually die cause another idea came along.
Sometimes I really just want someone I can hop on a discord call with so they can criticize my projects and brainstorm ideas and improvements with me4 -
How do you guys push changes to you server. ?
I am currently pushing changes to my git repo then pulling those changes on server where I am running the application in production.
I am planning to set up a simple server, to which I will push the changes and it push the changes to the server's running in production.
Or better would be to write a script and run on production servers that will check github for changes3 -
I'm really trying my best to improve but the work I'm doing (both the code and the business theme) is so god damn boring that I feel like I'm torturing myself just trying to keep up. How am I supposed to learn and build myself when everything is so dull and gray? I can't even talk semi-passionately about the work I do, its all just picking up user stories with lengthy business specs on them updating old code or writing up some new code to fit some business / API standard I know nothing about. Occasionally I'll review other code from a developer doing the same thing and sift through trying to find some way to improve a project I don't care about. Hold down the nausea that comes from fighting off the mental fatigue as I struggle to find the words to explain how a component I made works in terms I don't understand too people that know and care much more than I do...
I'm exhausted, I'm burnt out. This isn't me, and every day I wake up and tell myself that my salary makes me happy because it gives me the ability to do the things I enjoy and live on my own and provide for loved ones, and then struggle to swallow the lump in my throat as I drive in the cold to a giant corporate office with a thousand other Me's doing the same shit but better and improving.
I honestly love what my company offers me as compensation, I'll likely not find any better. But once I have some experience under my belt and some debt paid off I have GOT to find a jobs somewhere that doesn't drain the will to live out of me2 -
I used to work for a consultancy that specialised in a very niche area (I won't say what – this is traceable enough already!). We charged our clients a very high hourly rate, because demand and supply. All the time I'd get calls like the following:
"Please could you just make this small change to the deployment?"
"Yes, of course. You don't have any contract hours left, so I'll just forward you to our billing department so you can sort out the payment first"
"Ah okay, please can you tell us how to do it"
[Even if I explained it, you wouldn't be able to do it – that's why you're coming to us.]
"...or better yet, just do it as a quick fix outside of work?"
[So... work for no pay? No thanks.]
While my company always had my back on these requests (obviously, they wanted payment too), they were so frequent that I got sick of it.1 -
How to fail my interview 101:
1. Change your GitHub status to "I love learning new things every day"
2. Start by showing off your code katas
3. "React is the best way to do frontend"
4. "Unit tests are necessary"
5. "TypeScript is better than JavaScript"
6. "I don't have to learn CSS, I use Tailwind"19 -
Me: "I think I'd like to try out the new Ubuntu version. I really liked Gnome before, maybe the OS is better now?"
A couple days later...
"Man, it's really nice not having to emulate bash. I'm so much more productive now with Linux tooling! Wait, why did everything freeze?"
A week after install...
"What do you mean 'I need to recompile wireless adapter drivers'? Why isn't that included or updated through 'apt'!? Who's the person sitting at their desk saying 'yup, that's a reasonable solution?'"
Two weeks after install...
Me: "Oh, so it's not Chrome eating up system resources, there's a memory leak in gnome-shell.... WHAT!? WHY!? How do I switch back to Unity?"
One month after install...
Me: "Yeah, so I tried it out, but then I threw my computer in a river and I'm *so much* better off now."3 -
God fucking dammit.
I spend the entire day trying to get [this piece of shit] (https://github.com/php-ds/extension) to work and at the end of the day its tests pass, but when I try to instantiate a set, I still get bloody errors.
I mean, am I not punished enough for having no guidance in learning PHP and knowingly having to create an absolute monstrosity just because I don't know how to do it better.
Fuck it, I'm just gonna go cry myself to sleep now and only will start feeling like a failureagain, when I wake up.
sorry for bothering you with my problems.6 -

How do you define a good codebase?
From my experience, a good codebase is a codebase that is strongly opinionated.
More rules = Better code
Honestly, i am sick of maintaining codebases written by sickos who think they are hot shit for doing what nobody else does6 -
Not a rant!
But I want to know how much do programmer make? (Money wise) and would it be better to be a freelancer or to work for a company? What are some pros and cons for working in a company and for being a freelancer.5 -
If you do not push something (language, education, people, cars, design, medicine ...etc etc) how the hell do you expect to mature, surpass expectations and become better. Java didn't start off as good or as bad as it is today. It was through testing, abuse, use and pushing it harder do more and more amazing things that it wasn't built for. PHP has changed alot since I started using and it's through people efforts that it gets better. Before the javascript wave came it was a nuisance to use and sucked as most browsers had it switched off by default but it's become more secure, fluent and able to do more amazing things and people are loving it right now.
I really wish people would stop with half arsed and uneducated comments.1 -
How do I get through tough dev days ?
If by tough day we mean a day where I'm really not feeling it or the like, I don't.
I let it pass by me though music or doing something I enjoy doing, or something random but interesting.
If we mean that the task at hand during that day is tough, then there's no escaping it unless you want to risk losing your job, and I can't afford losing my job. So I ask for help, try to do it one little thing at a time. little progress is better than no progress. -
Do you know the feeling when you create a project, work on it for a few months, realize that it could be done better so you rethink and rewrite it, then after half a year you think that it's not good enough once again so you recreate it from scratch once more, then you get bored and leave the project for like 2 years and when you want to come back you see how bad the code is so you do one more rewrite? Well I do.
"Coming soon" since 2013! Starts to look good tho.4 -
My version of the rubber duck is Outlook. I start writing a mail to the PM explaining an issue with the domain logic and how I see multiple ways to resolve it, but not sure which one is better.
As I write the email clearly enough for him to understand, I end up knowing exactly what to do and I delete the email 😜2 -
So I've been in this dilemma.
I'm a senior like around 10 days from graduation. And I know I wanna do programming but like I dont know what area I want to do..
I'm certified in JavaScript and Python which I'm better with python but I dont have any accomplishments to be proud of..
And I've always wanted to make a game (I have a few ideas tbh) but I feel like if I do I'll be sucked into that only and not ever really program software or web apps..
Am I going to succeed? How can I be good enough to be a professional if the best thing I've made is a bit that barely has original code?2 -
I accept offer letter from x company.
And just before 3 day of joining i got far better offer from company y.
So i told company x that i got better offer I don't want to join there anymore.
They told me that after accepting i should not find new job, my word has no value, and told me "keep that attitude (sarcastically).
I know i did wrong. How do you guys handle that?
Is it wrong to accept other offer after accepting one?7 -
Once I had a junior who was the child of the boss, whom would refuse to listen because they thought they knew better. That junior was ambitious and always wanted harder tasks even though at the end of the day, someone would need to “pair” with them (aka go and do the task for them).
I left that place. Now I have a junior who knows so little that if they came and told me they don’t know how to turn on a computer, I wouldn’t be surprised (yes, unfortunately the bar went down incredibly fast).
I feel sorry for the new junior. I don’t have bandwidth for all of this. Nobody in the team has.
I do think it sucks that companies in general are so against juniors, but I wish at least that the ones who still make the cut were a little bit more prepared.6 -
Soo question for the few embedded engineers on here. Do you guys use microchip’s, or NXP’s SDK for the hardware drivers? Or do you read the ref manual and build the HAL and PAL drivers per the need of the project for less code bloat and saving code space.
I and my coworkers always end up writing the drivers ourselves , so we have a better understanding of the specific hardware of the chip. Just trying to see if We’re the majority or the minority of embedded engineers.
Not really sure how many embedded folks are even on here.
And no not talking about RasPie, and arduino folks (no offense)8 -
Im a student programmer pretending to know his shit and earlier today I was coding javascript and man I thought I know that language already. Turns out I dont know shit and it had me searching how tos on google. Bless that search engine though for giving me results I didnt even know that I need. Lesson of the day, just continue pretending shit cause ya gotta live life.
PS sorry for those passionate about programming, I am not worthy.
PPS I actually believe I can do better I am just a lazy ass piece of shit who's still contemplating whether I should be really all doing this shit

I really wish Emacs had better integration with Windows. Vim is a wonderful text editor, but it just doesn't do everything I used Emacs for. If it were my choice, I'd only use Linux for everything, but unfortunately I have to use other people's computers since my personal system's hard disk is borked, and it's really unfortunate how poorly it works even with Cygwin. Oh well, can't have it all I guess.2
-
I'm envious of Backend developers who can just 'see' the problem domain and start creating an architecture. I can't see shit - I just stare blankly at the project and I think: hm, what models do I write?
I know I'm a structured person, but I lack the knowledge and practice. One day I'll be able to do this, but for now I have to keep doing things ad hoc.
I really don't belong in the Backend but unfortunately that's how my career is turning out for now. All I know is I have to get better at this.2 -
Okay, this just fucked with my brain. We are supposedly seeing organisms (including humans) doing better in radiation fields.
https://youtube.com/watch/...
Not so sure about the ending, but I am also messed in the head about some of the thinking going on with consciousness. I suspected our thought processes are not completely body bound. I guess if the mind is interacting with a separate entity then it would need a physical mechanism. I dunno, seemed really speculative.
This guy usually does a rug pull and shows how everything in the beginning has doubts. He didn't do this on this one.6 -
Okay so Im just stuck. Ive not programmed in a few weeks I wanna say, and when I do I go on the binge and then I "take breaks" to relieve the stress because I want to just relax but I dont force programming out of my life I also think about better ways to do stuff but I feel like shit because I want to just enjoy and relax with some games but I enjoy and LOVE programming but I just dont know what to do. because I want to enjoy some of the games I got for christmas but I want to keep improving and I feel if I go a day without it just that much shittier for not. and I cant see how much Ive improved. I just cant relax and feel good about it.

(Mobile) Devs, how important do you see joining a company before starting your own Business? I have been into android for a year now and freelancing for 6 months. I want to start a company and sell some apps B2B. My girlfriend however says it would be better to join a company first and get enterprise experience, I dont see the point becausw nowadays there are countless of blogs and videos in the internet that teach you anything you want to know. Opinions?4

So for the past month I've been working on a new website for my department, it looks beautiful has a custom CMS and is all around great (not to tout my own horn or anything). Now my boss has taken it to the marketing department to get a final approval and they responded saying that a lot of departments are complaining about not being able to maintain their pages and how terrible the current ones look. They want to create WP sites for all the department's and make us maintain them. I know why I hate WordPress but they can't understand what's so bad about it. How do I convince them my custom solution is better than the monstrosity of WordPress?2

I'm such a big dumbass causing a bad second-impression in my new job: missed the standup because I'm a retard at reading how Outlook shows you the time of a meeting when you accept it, the time shown is the time of the inviter not your local time! And that day-1 training? Had to be completed by yesterday. Had to message the higher up I knew and was available, own my shit and apologize. Received a call from the outsourcing company's boss as he got notify from HR of my faux pas with the training.
I need to do better...6 -
How do you restore partial data from a mysql backup? Don't worry, nothing is wrong, I'm just thinking about how would I restore something if shit hits the fan.
Our current strategy for database backups is to just run mysqldump during the night, using a cronjob (feel freue to suggest a better way ;))
1) Restoring the full db: just read that sql file into the mysql command.
2) Restoring just one (or some) tables: open the file in an IDE, just select the lines you're after, copy them to a new file, read that one (possible issues: let's say we have a table B to which entries of table A are related and we just want to restore table A. We can't nuke table B too, as also table C is refering to it, so we have to do some orphant removal in B afterwards)
3) Restoring selected entries in specific tables: setup a new db, read the full backup in there, dump these entries to a new file and read that into the real db
How do you so it? Any better aproaches/tools?8 -
Rant<X, Y>

are you able to give 1/+ hour to any hobby project/self learning (technical, that could help you in infuture switch) ? if yes, HOW??
I want to create this website , but i keep on delaying that. i just have a faint idea of how the assoc technologies would be used , but putting even 1 hour aside becomes difficult once i come back from the gym in the evening. plus the effort to open laptop, refocus self and do something only to close laptop after an hour feels very less rewarding. I can't achieve anything in 1 hour, i need a continuous slot of 6+ hours to achieve something and plan for the next day.
do share any better mind makeup9 -
How do you deal with the constant feeling of uneasiness about not being able to come up with useful ideas? I'm not a genius, but I do pretty good work for a pretty decent size company with pretty decent size clients. I've always been good at building, just not so much at coming up with the ideas. The thing is that I just want an idea that I can be heads down on that people will actually use. I've been struggling with this problem for the last few years and it's not getting any better. Is it the same for everyone else?7
-
These days I've been noticing how important is to know how to create a good diagram to convey an idea. Also, working in a big company I noticed that we use UML diagrams for a lot of things, which is very useful to understand the architecture of the system or the design of the code. Does anyone here know some book or article that can help me to learn how to better convey ideas using diagrams, how to make one, and what diagram to use? I am not thinking about something very specific to UML, because I see that sometimes we just do a diagram that makes sense without following any standard.4

This is my first "Fuck you Windows" post. I just got a warning from GitHub that blocks me from using it;

Who the fuck are you? I am risking to be hacked. Why do you care, you just warn me and move on. How dare you block me and force me to use better password.19 -
How do you guys use the "extra" buttons on the mouse? Mine are currently set to back/forward, but I don't see myself using it that often while coding, so I'm looking for some ideas on how to better take advantage of them.14

Most of the stuff I know comes from debugging other people's code. When working on someone else's project, I try to understand what their code is doing and think how I could make it better and if it's possible to extend the functionality to make it do other things as well.

I had several laptops to work with but I have never felt so good since I bought a macbook.
I must admit my oldest ones didn't have an SSD, so maybe that's what is making the difference.
So, what's your setup? Are you an Apple fan? Do you think there are better options and alternatives? How many monitors do you work with?

Customer Service(cs): clients complaining our site crashes on their computer
Support: they dont have enough resources, its their computer
CS: customers still complaining, how do we fix this?
Support: tell them to get a better computer
CS: lets borrow their information and see whats going on
Support: reluctantly moves customer data over
CS: I dont see anything wrong here. It works just fine

If I wanted good feedback for my products (especially if they were geared towards developers) I would scrap devRant and do some data analysis on how our products are perceived in raw form. Would be very raw and informative insight indeed because you are at the heart of raging innovation (raging innovation: when a developer is so pissed at a flaw in a piece of software they highlight or fabricate an ingenious feature or solution) and will help not only iron the kinks out but make a better product all together. Also, of course the good aspects would be lauded.

Why do you not like cheating in games? Isn't it better to skip all the grinding and just get to the good stuff?
I just realized how much time I've wasted on Legos Unboxed... playing it the right way...
Prolly 2 months...
Finally realized yesterday so found the modded version. TLDR god mode.
So either the fun keeps going, I get banned, or I "finish" the game.
Would've saved me a lot of time...21 -
How do i get the motivation to keep working on a job which requires me to constantly edit different excel files , knowing that it will only decrease my chances of getting a better job in tech in the future !? I dont think i can even find jobs which pay well now.1

Working with at a web dev job with a guy who is a really great programmer, the problem I have is I'm dyslexic and remember code is pretty hard for me but when I get in the flow I can do things. Him on the other hand is a machine, reads something and can implement it immediately. Do you guys have any tips on how to do better? I don't want to look like a complete noon.3

I guess it's my third or the fourth company that am currently changing.
I have the will to improve and write better code quality level up. But sometimes i guess i have the lack to find the how to do these stuff and how to practice and who is going to tell me that i have to change these lines of code so you can improve am just in a big mess and i feel so bad about it.
Now i had just received a new warning at my current company that i either improve or i get fired. So i have been searching over google and internet how to improve as well i had just created a new project for the will to practice and become better.
Can someone tell me what i should do?
How to fix everything and let my colleagues gain my trust in my code commits ?
Because literally i feel so bad about everything and you can't imagine how miserable i feel.3 -
BossMan asks me to set up meeting with head engineer tomorrow about integrating 3rd party software. He thinks it bada bing bada boom and the software will get be implemented but I know better he doesn't even know what one of there many products he wants. How do I not embarrass myself in front if the head engineer? I am a full stack student and hope one day to work for this company in a dev role. What should I do?
-
Very vague and large question but: How do you become better in terms of software development / engineering?
For context my current job is pretty good but sometimes it lacks challenges, I’m interested in how people become better out of the work scope I guess.7 -
When I think about "collapsing the stack" (more out of the box features), I realise that Microsoft was way ahead of the curve.
Deno aims to make everything so much simpler because it has squashed all the tools you need into one (whether it's in one binary is just a detail), but Microsoft was already doing this with C# and Visual Studio years ago.
I do not mean to suck off Microsoft, I just wish the open source community would leave its tribalism mentality and see how corporations have tried to make developer experience better.
"What do developers actually need?" is not a question many open source projects ask.
It's slowly happening with Deno and Go leading that front, but we have a long road ahead of us.6 -
I've decided that I want to make a REST API using Flask/Python. I've researched it for a few days, but can't seem to find anything close to a definitive answer: How should I structure the application?
I've found a lot of people talking about using Blueprints, and I'm leaning towards that, but I'm wondering if there aren't "better" frameworks for building a REST API? What do people here recommend that I look into?7 -
Today I removed all the stickers I had on my laptop, and it looks pretty clean and better now.
I still remember the day when I would do anything to collect schwag and free stickers. In fact - I joined devRant just to get those free stickers XD.
but yesterday I had to do a presentation in my college and during the presentation, I realized how stupid it is to have a laptop filled with laptop stickers.
What I used to chase in the past, is what I am getting rid of in present. And it is true with many other things as well. We crave things and once we get them it hardly matters to us.
I sometimes wonder what life is really about, and is there anything that we can cherish forever and not take for granted?13 -
Exercise do the pyramid of * and I looked up how to do it but so many people are able to do it without looking it up I dont know why shit to do with nested for loops makes me feel so dumb.
I know it's not a big deal to not know how to do every single thing but I'm always even stuck on the smallest exercises that apparently more people can do than not. Like how am I supposed to have thought about that or figured that out. How am I supposed to learn all this shit. Like for example just look up a list of basic exercises and I cant do any of them. I'm not good at this and its stressing me out because how will I get better or hell even a job if I cant solve these simple problems? How am I supposed to get better at solving these simple problems? I cant just keep looking at the fucking solution because that wont stick or teach me anything
Most stupid thing to rant about by far4 -
Any Irish people here?
I’m planning to move to Ireland in the next six months, probably somewhere near cork.
Currently I’m living in Switzerland but I’m actually german.
However, I have two major concerns:
1) my English is good but not that good. It’s probably a bit better than the German average but still far from fluent. I think in the first months it might be difficult to communicate in English all day long in the office.
Did you have any coworkers or friends who moved there from a non-native English speaking country? How did they do? Did the company have problems with being patient with those people?
2) how hard is it to find a job as a java developer with 7+y experience considering #1?
Bonus question: what do you guys actually think about Germans, am I welcome? :)12 -
My afternoon has been worse than pulling teeth:
Me: "Hey services admin group, I need a ClientSecret generated."
Services Admin: "We can't do that, but we talked to the original dev team and they can. Go to their Slack channel and someone there will do it for you."
Me: "Hey original dev team, can you create a ClientSecret for me?"
Dev Team: "Does your team lead sign off on this?"
Team Lead: "Give him whatever permission he needs!"
Dev Team: "You should be able to give him whatever permissions he needs"
Team Lead: "I cannot"
Dev Team: "We just gave you permissions to give him permissions"
Team Lead: "I don't know how to give him the permissions he needs. Why didn't you just give him permissions"
Dev Team: "This scales better"2 -
News Feed for web dev trends/news?
I don't want these "how to do some weird shit with divi" kinda-news, I want to learn about new trends, frameworks, stacks, tech n stuff, especially new js features. Mainly webdev but other dev-stuff, too.
And if someone has a better reader than feedly for such feeds, pls let me know.3 -
That I'm too focused on it. And that I'll never be as good as I want to be.
I'm aware these concerns conflict with each other a bit.
My first concern comes from not devoting more time to other hobbies that just let me do things away from my computer, tech related or not. And the second comes from feeling like I've hit a wall and I don't know how to produce better projects beyond that wall ATM and when I do put time into other hobbies/skills even if it is tech related I feel as if I'm not progressing. It's frustrating.
These are both things I've been working on lately. Cutting social media has helped a little bit. -
My team has been using CVS for ages. I'm new to the team and can't imagine how my colleagues are working in this environment. I am thinking of proposing to change to git.
I found this amazing video of Linus explaining to Google engineers why git is better and I thought I'll show it to them:
https://youtu.be/4XpnKHJAok8
What do you guys say about my idea? Do you have anything that can help me?17 -
Every time somone who i have nearly forgott about calls me. I know im gonne get a stupid IT or Tech question...
- Why is my internet slow?
- Can you make a better {xyz}.... for free?
- How can i make my computer faster
- Why does office/spotify/chrome crash?
- Can you teache me programming so i can get rich?
FUCK THEM!
Really, i've got more relevant stuff to do. If you wouldnt have killed all your braincells with smoking and drinking and did something with your life you wouldnt have to ask such stupid questions in the first place. And thanks for never contacting me in the past X years! -
I don't know how it's out there, but where I'm from, we don't get a lot of practical classes. The curriculum has tried to include practical alongside theory but its just not working. All we do is theory and more theory. Maybe include a major portion of marks for practicals rather than theory. And yes, please no coding in paper.
Another major thing we lack is teaching logical thinking. I have met final year under grads who find using a (!foo) to invert the value of foo mind blowing. They would rather use a full blown if-then statement to do the same. I think we need to incorporate chapters that motivates students into logical thinking to make better programmers.
Another essential part CS education around here lacks is in relevant examples and chances for internship. If you're studying something, I believe you would understand it much better if you see and experience it. Curriculum should include a real world project that you would use in a daily basis. Maybe break down and analyse a successful application and its component. -

I'm not sure if it's good or bad, but lately I've lost that "love" for code, not coding itself, but the code in projects.
Because most of the time the projects are inherited, there is never enough time, It's always a priority. And let's be honest, most of the time programmers don't like others code. (Is it God Complex?).
What I do notice with this "new" philosophy it is that I do not stress when I do not like some development, I ask the "bosses" if there is time to change it or if we continue with how it is. I learn that it should be done better and I continue my life5 -
For those who graduated, how the heck do you people do it? I'm on the verge of failing and/or having to retake Calculus AGAIN! I thought that if I could retake it, I would do better. But nope, now instead of getting into that really good tech school in a couple years, I'm a fledgling developer stuck in commonunity college with a 2.9 GPA and not a single project finished. Every decision I make has an exponential affect on my future, but right now, I got nothing. I can't see myself going anywhere else or doing anything else than software development. I'm not quitting, but that isn't enough anymore. This is a nightmare.3

How do I know if there's a module for the problem I'm trying to solve? How do I know if there's a better module that solves the problem in a better way than the module I'm using? After I found the module, how can I use it if npmjs website contains just a skinny example and no explanation? Should I attend an advanced course for each module in repository?

What would you do if you had a safe way to slack whole day in job?
I am working in a giant company, it is easy to camouflage here. I am doing whenever a job is given but those tasks are not developing me. So I execute those tasks slowly. Sometjmes, a good quality tasks are given , I execute them really fine but those are scarce.
I used to study a lot of things during the day, like cpp, python, IoT but i feel like burnt out, just waiting for the end of the day. How can I break out of this situation. I know, for a better job, I must be a better sw engineer but I am wasting my free time(during my work hours) recently and my feeling of guilt is increasing.
How do you pick up yourselves in such mkments?16 -
I see a lot of people here coding using terminal editors like vim. Isn’t it better to use an IDE rather than vim? How do people in the industry do it?3
-
[POLL] How do you develop stuff?
1 - just write code. It doesn't need to be organized, it just need to work how you thought it would, and THEN you start organizing things, like editing/creating new files, letting things DRY, optimizing the sutff you did earlier;
OR
2 - you surgically write code, making sure you keep everything is organized from the beginning. Basically you only write when you are sure.
Or maybe it's a blend between the two or something.
I'm asking because I do like the #1 and I feel uncomfortable when people see my code when it's under development. It's a mess, there are tons of comments everywhere and a bunch of repetition. But, when I find the right stuff, I start writing modules to make my code work better, remove unnecessary things, add documentation, and so on.
My development process is not the best of the best, but I get things done with it.7 -
How do you do bootstrapping of blanko machines?
Imagine you get a linux/BSD/osx machine and you want it set it up to a defined state to be prepared for further setup.
Like users
ssh config
Sudoers file
Config management client or credentials
Software like vim, htop and tmux
A simple shell script sounds a bit archaic to me and i was wondering, if there is a better way...
Makefiles also came to my mind but still... Unsatisfactual4 -
I had a problem visualizing giant job/schedule dependencies trees a few years ago and basically wrote a program to convert the dependencies so it could be read in by a JS graph program that actually did the work. The output was a Gantt chart but really messed up, overlapping arrows, not very readable.
Today someone asked me for my app and but in a better format/visualization.
I so I was thinking how do I do this... Figure out which nodes are leaves, how to combine visually.
Programmatically you just link all the Nodes together. So I was thinking like how u need to use BFS and Mark when each more is traverse and on its first traversal, add it to a Map<Depth,List<Node>> then print each level, etc.
But not so straight forward.... But finally realized that I'm not trying to draw a Tree (or a tree where the rootams are actually in the middle and the top n bottom are leaves)... But actually a Graph.... A DAG....
SO FINALLY I googled and found GraphViz...
https://graphviz.gitlab.io/gallery/
And in the gallery I opened some pictures and printed at the bottom was like 1996...
And I'm now wondering "how the fuck did they do this?" Calculate where all the vertices should be placed so they can be linked with lines and and not look like a big mess...I guess like a yarnball3 -
A: Do you know Big O?
B: Yea I know Big O. Who doesn't know Big O?
A: So what's the Big O of X?
B: It's ....
A: Oh what about Y?
B: Oh that has a bigger Big O.
A: Hm... how about this one?
B: That's a really big Big O. Why not use mine?
A: Ooh that looks impressive, very small. So which Big O should we use?
B: Well there's a constant trade off, even though small is good, in this case I think the bigger one works better.4 -
New guy on my team keeps on saying "oops" and acts like a newb...
He's an experienced dev tho... Like 10yrs...
FML... HOW THE FUCK DID MY BOSS DECIDE TO HIRE HIM...
And then this afternoon I decided to look at internal mobility... all the postings (there were only a few even though we're supposed to be hiring like crazy this year) had descriptions that required experience in everything
Do you want me to move or not ...
"Things here are so much better than before" ... my ass... -
if you're having funner you're winning, son 😏
browsed through somewhere people were confessing things about their life. the community there is about something else so it's an interesting peek to who is there and how they are as people outside that area. man some depressing shit, or plain vile shit, evil shit
people have hope for the best for themselves and it doesn't work so they go crazy sometimes
some in there thought if they stayed there and toughed it out and were "successful" they would feel better. they didn't. I see that so much in the comments. people thinking if only they were successful they would feel better, but their problems have nothing to do with their level of success. it's strange humans do this
somehow every time I see depression I get happy
life will roll you, but are you having fun, son?
the more pain you see, the more you understand
so let's make talking about pain illegal
earlier I found out the first time my roommate realized if you pushed your body you eventually can't feel how tough it is to move it was when he was in his mid 20s on a college field trip... really wtf?
I walked a few miles to a far away grocery store to buy potatoes and hauled a couple bags home today. last time I did this I felt great after, which is what spurred the earlier conversation cuz I was telling him I was gonna go do it again.
well when I got back... he was doing dishes and literally crying... and he doesn't do dishes... because it's too physically tough for him to do his own dishes... so I guess knowing I was gonna do this walk with several kgs of potatoes he decided to try it out...
I told him the difference is maybe cuz since ever I could remember, my mom had taken me on errands with her like pre me being 3 years old, and we'd walk like 6-8 hours so I had learned real quick if you just power through physically you eventually feel nothing and can do it all day long
how could a dude not know that until he's in his 20s lol
so much of life is just like this though. it's funny. nothing real is spoken, nobody does anything, nothing ever happens. there's even war tourism people complaining current wars are too boring
but are you having fun, son?7 -
This summer I have a goal to master web development(nice joke, I know, but you get my point...). Html, CSS, Javacript, Python-Django etc and a website that is getting better all the time. But I have a big problem, something that really bothers me. I lack in understanding. I set up servers following tutorials and God help me if something doesn't work, I use patterns and libraries I barely know what they're made of, technologies that are totally strange to me. Right now, I'm totally confused of whether I need to have my database on a different server, or a dbaas, what the hell do I do if static files pile up etc. What can I do to get myself out of this path? Any books, courses, whatever, that teach not only the how but also the why? Thank you5

Actually got my testing program done today! I got some help and the person told me what was happening and how the function worked and helped me understand everything and what to do to not reproduce the same error and it was such an enjoyable talk/explanation. It makes me feel so much better when I actually learn what I’m doing wrong.2

In a normal application with front and back separated, how do you guarantee consistency between models? Do people normally do PRs to change them on both sides and hope none screws up or is there a better way?
Some time ago I was looking into generating stuff from the OpenAPI spec. Is this a good idea? Also, can graphql help with this? I'm soooo confused by this, it's like a problem I never managed to solve in my head...5 -
I read. Alot. When I'm going to do something simple, even if I've done it before I google a bit on "how to do x" and see if there are better ways to do it. And I follow the rabbit hole a bit to see where it goes.
Example, I just learned about the unix command mktemp. I wasn't googling about making temporary files, but it was part of a solution to a different problem. Ive discussed how to make temporary files with colleagues before, and this builtin unix command has never come up. So many minutes wasted coming up with random filenames. -
Oh no. Im shitting for too long on my throne and now my legs are feeling numb! I can't stand or walk. Fuck. How do i wipe this shit or clean hands. Shit. I need a standing toilet or a tube in my asshole so i can shit better. Like a devops pipeline8

Looking for help for my daughter who is an American exchange student in Germany struggling to learn to code Java in a classroom that only speaks German. She is using Java-Editor for her assignments but doesn’t know how to translate English-based tutorials into German. Like, what’s the German word for “properties” for finding the properties tab in the UI? That sort of thing. Is there an English to German glossary, or better yet a way to switch the UI to English?
I don’t speak German but I do code, so trying to help her is difficult.
Thanks for any help.6 -
I want to be a better coder and what better way to improve, than look at how the best does it right? 😁
So do any of you guys know a JavaScript/TypeScript project that is commonly known to be a masterpiece in the art of coding?5 -
implementing ticket from epic somebody else did breakdown on
someone from other team mentions that we should be getting approval from their team and preferably avoid doing stuff in this legacy repo
im just a code monkey, i didn't make the decision (or know the nuances around it), nor did i want to be in that old legacy repo
pain
i didnt know, i dont know what i dont know,
how do i do better next time...3 -
Is learning a low level langauge essential for understanding high level stuff?
Say I'm using Python/some framework in it(for data science/machine learning), I don't see how knowing C would help me do it better. A lot of results on "benefits of learning C" argue that it helps understand/use high level stuff better.15 -
Given the recent #deletefacebook movement and everyone deleting their Facebook accounts for privacy reasons, I must ask. Is LinkedIn any better than facebook? How much do you guys trust them with personal information?9

I sometimes thank the education system for teaching me really outdated stuff. Here's why...
With new programing languages with all the jazz and cool tricks, it's not impossible to develop concepts and get in the flow of visualizing problem solution. Like for eg, plython3 had inbuilt method to swap variables but I know how to swap variables without a third variable because I had to do it without python. Now that I have the ability to build algorithms, I can leverage functionalities provided by languages in better way.4 -
So I read about how NAND mirroring worked as a proof of concept on brute forcing the pass code in Iphone 5c. After reading a few paragraphs, I didn't understand how the researcher came to know what to do with certain challenges along the way. What the hell did I do in my 5 years of studying engineering? I better go back to the basics.

How do you guys monitor programs on your servers?
For example, I have a raspberry pi zero w running raspbian (headless). On this pi, I have a bunch of discord bots and web scrapers running at the same time. My solution was to run them all from a bash file:
Python3 discordbot1.py &
Python3 discordbot2.py &
Python3 webscraper1.py &
Node webscraper2.js & etc.
Is there a better way I could be running these services? How is stuff like this usually done?7 -
JS isnt the problem I have. I have realized. My problem is my lack of knowledge of the language which is not really a problem because I am new but its more the side I dont know how to write code that will do it. and lets say I do I get so fucking confident and it doesnt work and I think its some small error I made but no its just how I write it and it wont work and that gets me so down because when I ask for help my code 100% of the time gets rewritten. can I just not do simple shit on my own? and the problems Ive been coming across are just small projects to get better like "Create a function that outputs the most common item in an array" or "Write a simple JavaScript program to join all elements of the following array into a string" or literally any of the projects on this site: https://w3resource.com/javascript-e...
I feel so embarrassed because these are simple and I cant even do majority of them in langauges I'm better and more experienced with (python) I can think out a problem I cant convert that to code. algorithms in general I cant do as well and Ive never done any "big" or "serious" projects so I dont know what I have to show for the last 3 years of my life.10 -
I am thinking to make a SoundCloud clone as per project for learning purpose. Can you suggest the better way to proceed.what is the best stack and how music uploading and streaming should be handled. I want to do it hard way.1

Part of my remote work is to have a daily call reporting in on what I have done yesterday and what I am about to today. My colleague calls me for it. She's hired as a tech support and is suddenly assigned to take note and report on my work activities to our boss. Several times, I caught her pretending to know what I'm talking about like with Puppet configurations, Firewall diagnosis packets, ActiveMQ, Regex, etc. Most of the time, I just let it go as its not my job to validate her knowledge on these different but many services. Just do the call, get the report in, carry on. How difficult was that?
Yesterday, our call was left sour because I somehow blew up. I think I've reached my patience with this woman's assumptions to how these services work. Now I feel guilty for yelling at a lady but goddamn she stoopid for fibbing through my ear. Somebody help! What do I do?
If I report to our boss about her technical incompetence (politely), she might get sacked. She's a good tech support as long as she still has her trusty manuals by her, she can fix specific problems. But when it comes to unknown tech to her, she assumed she knew.
If I tell her about her weaknesses, however constructive I can get and as politely as I can get, all the while complimenting something about her, showing her how to improve herself, maybe she'll do better not to ask silly questions like buying a Puppet certificate? At least getting rid of ignorance would definitely help but not sure how she would take it. The worst thing I would imagine is her backfiring and yelling at me and then we ended up fighting.
If I kept quiet and tuck it all into a can, it will eventually implode as we go on.
This is not about her gender. I don't see her as a woman. I see her as a tech support engineer who should know her stuff.1 -
I think that leaving a child of just a year or even few months in front of the tv equals to an adult watching porn, the more your baby keep watching the cartoons on the TV the more he is not satisfied and would like to watch something BETTER. Now let's compare it to us as Adults, the more asses and holes you watch on pornhub the more you don't feel satisfied and you keep looking for something more exciting, and that's how you damage your brain.
What do you think?11 -
I am stuck on a UNIX legaxy project. This is the perfect time to learn awk, sed, vim. I use them but I wanna get better.
I can read a book, course, but I WANT to write code, maybe something like the hackerrank challenges but harder.
How do I get advanced in awk, sed, vim?5 -
Group project at uni, we're learning how to do scrum sprints. So here's a small story about all the ways it can go wrong.
We assign scrum master and product owner roles, what do those do? "We want to do design tho" they say two weeks later.
I end up doing the organization part and structuring the backlog.
"Alright, you guys will be the frontend team, your tasks are X and Y"
No response
One day before the review I ask again
"So, what's the status" (well knowing that they didn't do shit so far)
They start scrambling around, and manage to do like 30% of their tasks at best, I end up doing most of the work for them.
Next week, new sprint, our tutors somehow don't notice that literally 95% of the code has been written by me so far.
"Alright team, hopefully you will do better this time, so and so will be your subteam leader since he knows this stuff"
No response
Some guys start working on independent things without collaborating with each other, sometimes replicating stuff I already did (but obviously worse).
So that's the situation so far, I really would rather kill myself than keep working with these guys, jeeesus1 -
I would like to supercharge my workflow this year. I want to setup a slack team for our clients in order to help track task progress better. I would like to integrate slack with Trello in order to use boards. I would also like to integrate an email bot that clients can forward todo emails to and then convert these to Trello Todos. I know how to integrate bots but how can I convert emails from the email bot to Trello todos? Do I need to create a bot of my own for that?1

I have never felt better after my break-up, I think today is the day I can say I have moved on and the only thing that saved me was programming. Working on a big project and dedicating most of the time working hard. Every time I solved a bug or added a feature I felt better, felt proud of myself. My self-esteem has improved drastically. And continuously winning in 3 big hackathon events acted as a cherry on top. Now when I look back at the old version of me I find how funny it was, all that drama and mood swings. If I could go back in time I would tell myself just one thing - "Do programming like anything and become so good at it that you don't get time to give fucks to anyone else in life".
Moral of the story - "Love programming you will learn how to love yourself "2 -
what is the point of me being here i do nothing but sit in my room and do absolutely nothing. i have no car. i have no job. i have no money. i cant do shit i cant go out with my friends bc it’s always i need money to anything. i’m not good at school i’m so fucking far behind i’m practically a freshman i have no point in even doing anything i’m so useless. so easy to replace i just want a life. i want to live in the city so i can get a better job or even a job at all i wanna go places do things get a car and a job see the boy i’m so in love with. but i cant i’m so trapped in this house it’s not even funny. i have no phone as soon as i leave the house. i cant call or text anyone important. i wanna graduate. move out. go to cosmetology school. live with the love of my life. start a life. move on with this shitty one i’m living now and pay for my own things. but until then i’ll just dream and dream about everything i could have and do. i wish i was that kid who had money who got handed a car from there parents and got to leave the house with no troubles like how am i gonna pay for this or who’s gonna get me how am i gonna get there and back. i want nothing more then to just be happy and be accomplishing things but i can’t. i am the worst daughter ever.3

Need Advice:
My whole life, I have been a sole developer. Most of my project was a single person. I was responsible for the frontend, background, server deployment, and everything else. I liked doing the thing my way.
After working like this for a decade, recently, my company hired a second developer to help me (So I can do the management of other projects.)
The biggest challenged that I am facing right now is the difference between my thinking of a problem or the way to solve problems compared to the other guy.
There are many things that he and I do differently.
I need some advice on how to work in teams. I how to manage things better. -
Noob question
Is it better to implement a cryptpgraphic algo in a function or in a class? Also how?
More info:
I have a cryptography class and I really enjoy implementing the different techniques that we study in class. At first I was just implementing the techniques in a simple function with 3 parameters; key, message and a bool for encryption or decryption. But as they are getting more complex, it is becoming harder to continue implementing them in a single function block. So I thought of using a class but ran into the problem of how do I even do that? Do I make different methods for key generation, encrypting and decrypting?
P.S. It's really just for learning how the crypto technique works and not for anything serious.12 -

Will start work probably next week after lots of searching. Few months without work was good life relatively. Wake up whenever you want to, browse reddit how much you want to, way more time to do things that want. Now in new job especially on trial period I will have to learn lot, also that rush to work if I do not want to end work late makes life worse. Full time jobs suck. Half day work would be better but to get even little shorter work week is a big challange. At least when was fired from previous job. Fuck that.
Also probably will take a non remote position because they claim it is low stress. But I believe their codebase sucks, they do not write tests. But they say they are planning to start writing tests. But still most important thing is low stress, but question is how in reality will there be low stress. Or will they fire me quickly even without causing me stress. It would be ideal to learn at least all the tech they are using, so that I would not lag too much because of this, but I have no idea how to quickly learn, I thinik I would need 2 hours after work for learning, which sucks that I will not be able to enjoy at least after work time.
Plus the fucking traffic jams. Why they can't have remote position. Especially when covid cases are growing. -
It's all "Ops" so there's a grey line between "tech ops" and "DevOps" and you can do tech ops easily and have a better idea how to... (Can't remember the right words but what I heard is turn on/off a device)
——Boss, not knowing difference between DevOps and tech support.4 -
This begs the question: how do you define being good at programming? How can you tell if you are actually good or just think you are?
Having asked that, I think I’m getting there... by reading other people’s code, by listening to feedback from better devs than I am, by asking questions and discussing matters I may not fully comprehend, by reading books and articles, by trial and error and by constantly seeking new concepts, languages and other relevant matters to learn. That’s how one becomes better - when one is good, is another story altogether. -
I have a Question ✋
Scenario : We are the offshore team. Asked to add a feature similar to other product. I added the feature in product, created necessary database to store the data. Later Manager started barking how my code isnt similar to the one he asked for me to do. I explained to him, my way is better for, database is optimized and is simpler. Later had to redo his way.
Question : How often do you come to situation like this? How would you have handled it? 🤔
Extra : Share if you have similar story.3 -
see now this is the f-ing shit that pisses me off.
There is this project named dain.
One time I made a project that dropped frames using opencv or ffmpeg i can't remember, creating a test output file and ran them through dain to benchmark it for myself.
alot of things just like this actually I tended to do to get a better sense. Its the reason I abandoned the NN since I think I have a feel for how to design them for certain tasks and remember that with my 'successes' i was still really far off from where i'd like to be.
additionally there are other kinds of ml that interest me more that I am not seeing too much on... point is
I worked all this crap out
got wavenet working to check on it YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARS ago and because the dirty fucks out west kept stealing my stuff, i end up back at square one waiting for some douchebag to steal my stuff again who isn't even going to do anything but pretend he's straight or pretend everything has some faggot meaning. its very annoying. why do these people live this way again ?3 -
If you have a blog, How do you decide what to write and publish on it? And, How do I motivate myself to write posts?
Context: I created my blog/website on 29 September 2017. I had a few ideas on writing blog posts(Condition variables in Go, Serverless related stuff and a whole bunch of posts related to wireguard) but every time I have tried write a post, I learn there is someone else who has already written a post on it and probably better than what I could have done, So what is really the point of writing it? And, I feel very insecure about writing posts, I feel like, If I do write a post, every one will know, I don't know anything about **anything**. :( I know about imposter syndrome, But I don't think I have that. I work with a lot of realllly smart people and I don't know as much as them. So, I am actually an imposter.
edit: I am usually active on Telegram, IRC and I try to help out people. It's easier for me to help people in communities like that but doing the same thing with a blog makes me very uncomfortable.2 -
Ok, which datacenter do I have to set fire to, in order to stop these FUCKING PROMOTIONAL SMS MESSAGES THAT I KEEP GETTING FROM MY FUCKING PHONE OPERATOR??
NOW I'M GETTING PUSH MESSAGES TOO?!? BURN IN HELL YOU FUCKING FUCKS!
I WILL BUILD A FUCKING ARSENAL OF FUCKING ROCKETS AND I'LL SHOVE THEM UP YOUR SHITTY ASS AND BLOW YOU UP IN SO MANY PIECES THAT EVEN AVOGADRO WON'T BE ABLE TO COUNT HOW MANY WILL BE LEFT OF YOU.
AND SPOILER ALERT: I ALREADY KNOW HOW TO BUILD ROCKETS, SO YOU BETTER START RUNNING4 -
How come am I doing better at getting women to getting web contract to keep the money flow.
And why the fuck do every fucker I meet "want to date me."1 -
I know how to build mobile apps (design and apps themselves).
I want to open a small services company, but I realized that I will need a website with portfolio of the jobs I did. Im working on gathering a portfolio, but have no idea how to make a proper website for representing my services.
Popular choice seeems to be getting a wordpress theme for $50-$60 modifying it and that's all. Is there a better way to do this and look professional without hiring a web dev?6 -
Againg symfony shitty:
look - I want to validate csrf. I found docs how to do it.
https://symfony.com/doc/2.8/...
"if ($this->isCsrfTokenValid('token_id', $submittedToken)) {
// ... do something, like deleting an object
}"
But how the fuck should I know what is token_id from this stupid writing?
I have debugged their code to find it out. What a fucking waste of time !!! Free shit. Companies could probably pay small fee for the symfony if they could find people who do better job. Because by paying salaries for finding such shit costs them anyway.
And there was a htmls where the token was:
<form name="form" method="post" action="/admin/policy/47/push-im-xml">
<button class="btn btn-xs btn-info" type="submit">Push IM XML to GA</button>
<input type="hidden" id="form__token" name="form[_token]" value="LDVrl52CYtbT-kDudsjzrNAdJuIyFZhafsgk9QDnWGs"></form>
Guess what was token_id : form
:D whf. How the fuck could I know? I have tried various ways before debugging liek form_token, form[_token], _token
Who could fucking think its 'form' ?!!!! Wth. This is a joke.9 -

As some of you (I'm certain), I have a plex server at home. Hosted with an "old" core i5-4670K, 16GB ram, no GPU. (Ubuntu 20).
My question. HOW, HOW THE FUCK :
I can play HDR and DV videos via plex TV app.
I can play HDR via my S10 fucking phone !
I cannot play nor HDR nor DV since last update on Xbox X... It's the ONLY use I have for that console. If my TV can do better, wtf I'm supposed to do with that console ? (Any way to put plex server on it ?)
My friend can play my 4k HDR video on apple TV via remote connexion..
What's wrong with Xbox X ?
RHAAAAA.
Also, FU all ripers using PGS format for subtitles without SRT option.
Also FU sony for not allowing TrueHD via ARC. (AT least on my A/V reciver)
Also fuck me for buying xbox.
Also fuck the worl just because.
Ok, I feel better. Thanks you all.4 -
Apparently the fact I like to study things outside what I do for a living is bad for recruiters.
"We selected a candidate which focuses only on the frontend."
Why is everyone so afraid about the fact people can do more than one thing? Is it the fact they'd realize they are mediocre af if they would have to admit specialization doesn't mean they should stop to be passionate about the rest of the world?
I didn't say stuff like: "I am a pro in every it field", I said: "While I am definitely stronger on the frontend, I have interest in both backend and frontend, because it allows me to better understand how systems work and it helps me understanding that sometimes what may seem easy to do for the other role may also come at a too big to handle performance cost."5 -
The most productive way of development is going slow and don't make a lot mistakes. Lately, I'm doing the opposite. It's often not your skills or knowledge but just your patience / expectation to be managed. Since I switched from C to Python I got the mindset that everything should be possible to make in short time with low effort. Being used to do a lot of effort because of C development gave me a lot of patience and upgraded me to be a better dev at any language. But sadly, I notice it's a skill you can lose. How to retrain my patience. Doing a lot of C again. But I want to have the patience NOW (retoor said impatiently). What a paradoxale dilemma shit. You have to do patient stuff to be become patient whey really sucks and sucks if you became inpatient.
Very underrated skill that actually says a lot about you as programmer: patience.
With enough patience you can master anything. Without it, you're depending on tools that allow you to. That's OK, but there's always some price to be paid. Many time it's the ignorance not knowing how the tools work and thus how it actually works. Some people can live with that, others don't. Knowing how somethings works is relative anyway. Do you know how it works until the language level? Kernel level? Framework level? Everyone chooses themselves what the limit is I guess. My limit is the C api / kernel interface.
Random thoughts. I'm just bit frustrating performing low lately and speculating about what to do about it. I just don't have a different hobby than programming. Doing something else for a while to give brain a rest would be best but it should be something raising dopemine. TV / gaming doesn't do that for me.
Sigh, how to do absolutely nothing. I did it for a 1,5 year full time but that was because of medication. Now it's impossible.18 -
How much it is difficult to embed Live JS Editor in a website. Pretty easy right? specially when a lot of coding editor like code pen, jsbin etc are available. But all seems bullshit when it comes to show result in console or they are pretty much expensive.
Seems I have to do work my own. Any suggestion , I just want live code editor for my WordPress website. I am working with Ace but anything better that can help me out2 -
So im working for this company and we work monday to friday....and i think my CTO is "funny"...we can be free half the week with not much work to do or we actually have completed all the work that was described... but he then comes in friday evening and tells us how everything should be working on monday....what everything?! What fucking everything?!!! Mind you we don't come in saturday or sunday......the everything he is talking about is suggestions we had made to him about how the system should work and he said no....now he thinks its a better thing to do....and he pushes all those refactors on the last day of the week....we had all week nigga what the fuck!!!....

My task is to create a form for posting customer details to the server.
I've spent almost 2 days on the UI.
I mean, it doesn't look like I've been doing much if you consider the UI only, but I've been testing many scenarios of what works best, but unfortunately, the boss only cares about the code, and not how many concepts that have been tested.
So what the form basically does is if you click on the edit button, the inputs field will occur, and if you click on it again it will remove the lines around the input field for better presentation of the data.
How do you show to someone the work you've done, do you write notes or show them the code?3 -
Hi guys, I need your help. Mostly those who use MacBook for development. I'm looking to buy a new laptop and was thinking of getting a MacBook. This will be my first time owning one. I always used Windows but for almost over a year now, I've been on Elementary OS. I do programming on my current laptop in Eclipse, IntelliJ and mostly, Android development in Android Studio. Also, I'm learning HTML and CSS. The battery of my current HP laptop has degraded to the point this thing only last 30 - 40mins when unplugged. Because of this, I can't do much on-the-go. Buying a new windows laptop, I know I will definitely dual boot with another Linux distro or better full boot Linux and get rid of Windows. My question is, how is programming or development on a MacBook. How's does Android studio perform? Are there anything that MacBook users wished worked better on Macs which involves Development? Please help because I can't decide and since I haven't used a MacBook as my daily driver, I'm not sure how it will affect my work writing code in there.
Thanks I'm advance for your answers. 😁4 -
So the question is:
is there any better alternative to material ui?
mui is powerful, but I see no good in it in the field of customization.
You can't do shit without searching smth like: "how to remove the ::before in that mui component"
and getting some answer like:
"oh you can't do that with css! you should use that prop and shit or you should config your library in a way which you can remove ::before"
FFS WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS
I JUST WANT TO WRITE MY BORING CSS AGAIN10 -
Not that i am just in this for the money but how do i start making money from what i know? I'm sick of my car wash job, they hired me because i wanted to help them get there website to a better standard but that's not what they'ed had me doing. Now i just work at this dumb car wash.
Please, how do i sustain a income from this thing that i really love to do?1 -
Why do most people think that a person can only be great at one thing.
I've just started working as a developer and when I tell people I am also learning cyber security they are like what's the point of it. And how I should focus on one thing and blah blah.
Man, nobody questions Elon Musk when he is learning new things everyday. But then why can't we do the same and man we don’t need to be judged. A little support would be so much better.6 -
Do you 'draft' your code?
I'm just really curious, as I'm not a developer; but I've been doing dev work for the last 8 months...
I just realised today, that 'drafting' my code on paper makes my workflow 10^10 times better and intuitive.
Like, just writing a rough code block with what function I'm going to use and how I'm going to form an equation, etc...
Or do you guys just jump straight ahead and start pushing out code?2 -
I am building a synth program for producing waveforms such as binaural. The programs I have used in the past have been mediocre.
In that project I am working on a realtime scope to visualize the waveforms. It is fun to learn how to streamline moving data between parts of the application. Right now it has a lot of unnecessary data copying going on, and resizing of vectors. So I am reading some books on high performance C++ to learn how to do this better. As part of this I am thinking about building a circular buffer so the vector is never resized and is always in contiguous memory.
Just plain fun!4 -

So I am quite good in learning a programming language while doing a project with it. But I am really bad in "classical learning". I learned English in school from grade 3 and had three years of Spanish in my highschool but I learned absolutely nothing in my Spanish class. Now I would love to learn some other languages but my brain is kinda blocked. It seems like I first have to learn how to learn. What are some learning practices that you guys use? Especially for topics where you have to memorize things instead of understanding the logic behind it. And how do you train your brain to become a better learner? Thanks in advance!1 -
I wonder how much better/worse a news channel would do if they only reported good news locally and globally 24/72

Lost about 4 days debugging bug about date conversion between frontend to backend as an api request.
This shit is mad fucking annoying
The date format was always wrong.
So i gotta ask. Is it better to always have date fields as a Long which contains just a huge number that represents a timestamp, and that way whenever i want to see what date it is i would have to convert it every time on both frontend and backend from timestamp into LocalDateTime, or is it better to keep it as Date/LocalDateTime and not string/long, and that way risk fucking up the date format?
How is it done in real world projects? Whats the right way to do it and why?3 -
Hi. I signed up to devrant a few months ago. I’m new to coding. What language do you recommend I should learn, Java or JavaScript? I hear JavaScript is better because it’s a full stack language whereas Java can only be run on the back office.
Also, is it even worth going down the route of programming, since the AI is supposedly taking over the industry? I mean, I feel like I can make quick progress as I’ve already learned how to inspect code in the browser and change font colors and advanced stuff like that. But seems like AI always be one step ahead of me. What do you think?20 -
How do I go into tokenizing strings of text from a LaTeX file into a Go structure for further processing? I feel like splitting hair trying for loop over an io.Reader and using regexp to find where a sentence ends; there must be a better way...2

Good company refuced my contracting service. Fuck that. And reasons do not sound good to tell - like team did not want me anymore, maybe too dificult project, I am not independent enough, too many fixes after code reviews. This sucks that I do not know how to fix those parts, I have tried. And about too dificult project - how can I do better on dificult projects, I am not sure. There are projects of similar dificulty in most companies. And if projects would be easy, then everyone does that and reward would be small.18

Time to complain about "Just do X". Often nerds ask broad, open-ended questions, and I see people giving lazy, low effort solutions. As a lazy, open guy, I sympathize. I just wish people gave better "just" answers. How about a few levels of abstraction above "doing" something next time! Tell someone to "just read this", or "just learn about this" instead! Please pass this on to your neighbor.

I'm probably doing something wrong because I cannot think of a good implementation (or alternative) for this pattern in Rust.
trait Terminal {
fn color_manager(&mut self) -> &mut dyn ColorManager;
}
All I want is having things in their own tidy little class with a specific job. In this case handling color conversion, having a registry for indexed colors, stuff like that...
It's composition which Rust should be good at so I assume there's a better way
How can I do something like this properly? -
SITECORE VS OTHER CMS'S
FIGHT!
Someone I know has been convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that SiteCore is this amazing peice of magic software where you push a few buttons and your wildest dreams come true.
Anytime there's a probem with our other websites (laravel sites or Drupal sites) we get a lecute on how a SiteCore site would do X so much better and how the problem would never happen on a SiteCore instance'
I think it's a little bloated and don't like the tech stack behind it.
What are your thoughts on it? Is it magic ? Should I agree with him and just stop fighting the inevitable?1 -
I'd like to hear opinions from experienced devs/software architects... Referencing my two previous rants, the imposter's has been strong today. And I really don't know how to feel about the possible solution I've come up with... Adding the new feature as a microservice for an otherwise monolithic application 🙄 is that a sane idea?
The thing is I need to have a subscription type event-driven mechanism and since we're listening to service bus messages from another cloud provider, I apparently can't just have a serverless function to do the job, so unless there's a better option, I need a microservice with the subscription that can then invoke a serverless function to actually do what needs to be done. That's my idea, but I'm far from sure this is the best way...1 -
How do come up with good names for classes and interfaces? Mine always seem stupid and I want to change them, but cant think of anything better.2
-
I feel like I’m putting a lot of pressure on myself because I haven’t done much developing lately. I started a ASP.NET Core tutorial/book (that I already made a rant about) I’m enjoying it and the imposter syndrome that accompanies learning something new. But I’m scared I won’t be able to grasp anything from the project I’m building with the tut and won’t be able to actually do anything with it. But we will see hopefully when it’s complete I’ll understand it better. And I also have college to worry about so fuck that and my teacher that never likes my answers no matter how accurate they are4

Are you an off-shore contractor working for a US company? How do you really feel about working US Hours?
I have several contractors on my team who say "I'm willing to work any shift" but I need you to be honest with me on devRant... how do you really feel? Do you have families? Do you prefer to work your normal hours? Why do all of my contractors martyr themselves to work whenever they think makes me happy?
I can work around your requests, I'd probably get better work if you're happier and well rested. I'm not sure what I'm missing, are these hours actually better for you and your family?2 -

I am in the crossroads of how to answer a question "How do you see yourself after 5 years time?". And I honestly have a difficult time deciding which path I should be striving for. How and which point does a software developer decide what steps to make to achieve next role? Are here devs who went from a software dev to 1) Tech lead 2) Manager 3) Contractor. Could you tell your story and what did you do if you did it on purpose? Or maybe how did you got better? Books? People? Forums? -
What is the correct way of pulling the latest changes via docker?
Please write step by step commands.
This is how i do it:
1. docker build -t dashboard:latest -t dashboard:v2 dashboard/.
2. docker rm -f dashboard-latest
3. docker run --name dashboard-latest -d -p 8081:80 dashboard
So...
1. Build latest changes
2. Remove the old container
3. Pull those latest changes
---
Is there a better way? Less commands? Is this the right way to do it?
Sometimes the changes dont get updated so i waste hours of time trying to figure out if i fucked up the commands, or order of commands, or if its some caching problem etc.
Teach me the right way once and for all.9 -
Normally take a break. Think for a moment what am I trying to do and HOW am I doing it. That way i unstuck myself and find even a better way to do whatever i was doing.

How do I deal with a lead who was hired to lead a predominantly backend team when he's just an average frontend dev. He's so afraid to try new tech and so reluctant to learn. Plus most of the junior developers are better than him. He even tries to shift the blame on other devs. It's so hard to deal with the guy. Our old lead was so much better the guy was a really bad hire zzzzz.1

As an art guy trying to learn how to code , I’m blown away on how antiquated the entire process is. Not knowing anything about code I can expertly say that there should be a better way to program. It hasn’t changed much since I used BASIC. Is this the best you can do? Typing line after line of rubbish lingo that only code bros know. Why not invent a smart version of scratch? What a waste.
