OW FUCKING GREAT
BEEN CREATING THIS WEBSITE FOR 1 MONTH USING REACTJS. IT'S HALFWAY DONE. NOW THE HIGHER UPS CHANGES THEIR DECISION THAT WE HAVE TO MAKE IT WITH WORDPRESS.
FUUUUUCCCCKKKK. I'M FUCKING OUT.21 -
Really want to get shit done today.
Lets browse Spotify for 3 hours to find good focus music.
Spend 2 hours designing a new IDE color theme and inspections which should really help me do code reviews faster
Oh, lunch time!
Maybe after lunch I should read some random clickbait blog posts on organizational paradigms.
...
And now I'm stranded on devRant. 😫13 -
After moving to SSD I noticed I'm too slow for my computer. When it finishes working I can feel it asking me "you done thinking m8?"4
-
Person: "I'm using Ubuntu. It's my first time using Linux. It looks pretty nice and it works for me."
People: "Eww. Loser. Ubuntu sucks! I'm a Linux god."
Person: "I think PHP is fine and has improved."
People: "Yikes. Don't use PHP. Everyone hates it."
Person: "I like using Angular. It gets the Job done."
People: "Boo! Use React. Angular sucks!"
So there you go, kids. If you wanna stay cool, listen to other people's opinion and their way of thinking. No need to really immerse and try out the tools that seem to work for you.16 -
Shout out to devs who put comments in your code I'm so done with my team rn
Also we have slack for a reason stop texting me to update everyone on changes...2 -
Windows: I need to update

My friend called me for help with her CSS. I was like no problem go to Teamviewer.com and install that software. 10 mins later she called saying teamviewer didn't fix her code. I'm done!4

I've had this twice in a very short period of time now and it really pisses me the fuck off.
Sitting in the train (I think the grammatically correct version is on the train but no that would be a little too dangerous for me I think), on my phone devRanting/Signalling/Rioting around when an an elderly person says (aiming towards me):
"Oh, youngsters and their technology, where has socializing gone? Why are you people always on your phones? Go socialize sometimes!"
Excuse me but fuck right off.
Because you know what, I am currently socializing.
Just not in the way you are used to or maybe even 'okay with'.
I'm talking with friends from all around the world (Signal + Riot), participating in interesting discussions (on here) and what not.
I do have very strict rules for myself though. When in company with people I am actually going to socialize with or when hanging out with friends, the phone goes the fuck away unless I NEED to be reachable.
But I'm on a fucking train with people I don't know and frankly I'm done with socializing for the day as I've had to hear (often stupid) people asking for help all day long.
Next to that, I don't know you, you don't know me, who am I to judge you? I'm not going to socialize with anyone here anyways and even if they'd like to, I'm fucking done with people for to-fucking-day.
Sincerely fuck off please.11 -
In my 1st semester, they taught us C++ basics
In my 2nd semester, they didn't teach us shit about CS.
In my 3rd semester, they taught us C basics
In my 4th semester, they taught us Java basics
In my 5th semester, they are teaching us Scratch and Python basics
Can you be fucking done with basics already for fuck sake? I'm a fucking Front End Developer here interning with companies and getting paid whilst I pay a fucking huge sum as college fee and learn fucking basics I knew back in high school? And you're teaching me Scratch, what the fuck is wrong with you; kids in pre-school are taught scratch. Fuck you education system, India!
Which countries should I consider for my post grad?
I'm so fucking done here.24 -
Working from home in 2020:
Both kids haven't interrupted me in an unusually long time.... That likely means they're up to no good.
On the other hand I'm getting a lot of coding done (bunch of fixes done / misc new tasks done).
So now I sort of do a little mental math to guess if the damage they might be doing is less than the value of me getting shit done for work....18 -
I love coming home from classes to get some work done on my setup.
My thought is; if I'm going to be sitting here for hours at a time working, may as well make it a comfortable environment.45 -
*all kinda db shizzle at work but finally done and going home. Can't see anything related to databases for the next few hours*
*gets in car and closes eyes for 5 minutes* (I'm not the driver)
*opens eyes only to look right into the center of a license plate: xx-DB-xx*
😑
I think the universe hates me or something.2 -
When I'm at work, can't wait to go home and work on my personal projects.
When I'm home I cook, I eat then I'm too tired to do anything except watching Netflix on the couch.
Then I go to bed frustrated for not having actually done anything I really like.
Am I the only one?
Is there any escape from this?17 -
That's it. I'm done. I'm out. Tired of a team and manager who refuse to make me feel like part of the team.
Officially started looking for a new job today.

IBM
I have replied to them with scripts, curl commands, and Swagger docs (PROVIDED TO SUPPORT THEIR API), everything that could possibly indicate there's a bug. Regardless, they refuse to escalate me to level 1 support because "We cant reproduce the issue in a dev environment"
Well of course you can't reproduce it in a dev environment otherwise you'd have caught this in your unit tests. We have a genuine issue on our hands and you couldnt give less of a shit about it, or even understand less than half of it. I literally gave them a script to use and they replied back with this:
"I cannot replicate the error, but for a resource ID that doesnt exist it throws an HTTP 500 error"
YOUR APP... throws a 500... for a resource NOT FOUND?????????!!!!!!!!!! That is the exact OPPOSITE of spec, in fact some might call it a MISUSE OF RESTFUL APIs... maybe even HTTP PROTOCOL ITSELF.
I'm done with IBM, I'm done with their support, I'm done with their product, and I'm DONE playing TELEPHONE with FIRST TIER SUPPORT while we pay $250,000/year for SHITTY, UNRELENTING RAPE OF MY INTELLECT.11 -
"You either suffer the pain of discipline, or you suffer the pain of regret."
Alarm is set for 0500 (and placed at the opposite side of the room, not more snoozing), jogging shoes are ready and, after a year of putting it off, this is my good night lecture. I'm done regretting.8 -
> Get home for lunch, time to get some work done
> Fire up windows to program my keyboard
> WindowsUpdate, fine I can wait
> Reboot, grub rescue - no partition found
> Fire up a live CD, windows update nuked my linux partition (literally - now empty space instead of my previous ubuntu partition)
> Reinstall ubuntu
> Now stuck on «Loading operating system»
Oh well, I know what I'm doing tonight

Fuck this fucking sql error for the past 2,5 fucking hours.
I'm so fucking done with this bullshit.20 -
I just want to shout that I'm freaking tired of being used and not pay for my services because of fucking friendship!! WHAT THE FUCK!! IM DONE WITH YOUR CRAAAP!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT FUCKING PROJECT TAKES ME 3 DAYS TO FINISH AND YOU WILL JUST SAY THANK YOU?????!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!! :(16
-
I just had a major breakthrough on a project 😊
Just standing there chatting with my dad (also a dev), while preparing for the new years feast, and got this amazing idea that I just had to try. 30 minutes later I'm done with the script and it works flawlessly 😊😅5 -
My duck came in, along with his two capes, the stickers I forgot to ask for, and the note I requested.
In the special instructions box, I asked that they include a note that said something random, and they delivered.
"devRant ducks do dances directly downstairs daily"
Well done @dfox @trogus or whoever does the shipments, I'm thoroughly entertained :D8 -
Hot take: PHP is pretty good nowadays.
I'm a Laravel dev right now and things just get done so quickly. Every language has its problems but the meme of PHP hate seems to be made more out of ignorance these days. You could find just as many problems with any other language.
For those that say I'm biased because I work through the framework more than the language, I'd ask don't you do the same? ASP.NET, Java EE, the millions of JS frameworks, all these also make your life easier within their languages.
In the end, work with what makes you happy and productive and be done with it.16 -
Hi everyone! Progress is slow for the game development.
I'm finally (and hopefully) done character design though I have a fuckton to do for 10+ characters.
Tbh it was my first time but got the help from the art community to give me a lot of feedback!20 -
MASTURBATION!
Just kidding. What are you, @Agred, twelve?
Mostly I'm going for a walk. If somewhat cleaner air won't help me I'm giving up entirely and driving home. Most of the times it gets the job done, as after around 20 min of driving my head gets clear enough to find some idea to push forward with task at hand.
Playing some video games for few minutes also let's me rest a bit and sometimes find a solution. Although this isn't something I would do often in the office for obvious reasons.13 -
Unexperienced digital immigrant: "Let's make a website, can you do this?"
Me: "Yeah."
"But you gotta use wordpress. We want to be able to change the content easily. Also we want to have that website done fast."
"Meh, ok."
one day later
"Are you done yet?"
Me: "No, I got to find a good way for the lightbox I'm still implementing to fetch data from posts blabla"
"Why are you not done yet? Just take a plugin, even I can do that. Wordpress is so easy, it's just 1, 2, 3 and done."
Yeah I have an idea. Why don't you just make the website yourself.4 -
I think in my case its a monitoring system I'm still writing which does already work (just far from done).
I got this as a crazy idea while thinking that it would be impossible to make and then thought fuck it and I wrote it.
Written in php, and as long as you can write a module for it, you can pretty much make it monitor anything you'd like.
I'm using it to monitor a few websites and servers I run :)5 -
My first PR approved for open source community. WOW !!!
It's felt like heaven. I'm done something useful 😍3 -
My family hosts an 100 mile (160km) run once every year for ultra-runners. 11 hours in the first runner has done 105 km. And I'm sitting at this checkpoint logging their times and working on a project. But rain started pouring down and this not so waterproof tent has just become the worst developing workplace I have ever been in because the umbrella ain't big enough for me and the laptop. So I'm soaked and won't be relieved for another 8 hours. The things you do for family.8

IPod didn't sync well on my Linux machines so decided to give windows - in a highly isolated environment disconnected from the Internet behind a firewall and sandbox - a shot with itunes.
- during the installation it wouldn't detect the fucking harddrive multiple times (genuine unlicensed copy) and after the 4-5th time it's random-fuckingly recognized out of fucking nowhere; I didn't change shit.
- crashes (blue screen and freezes) multiple times during the installation, multiple retries and suddenly it works(?!)
- it took about 10 minutes (!!!!!!!) to install 10+ drivers for an iPod and an external hdd:
Installing Apple iPod drivers... Done
Installing seagate drivers... Done
Installing apple iPod drivers... Done
Installing seagate drivers... Done
Installing Apple iPod drivers... Done
Installing seagate drivers... Done
Installing Apple iPod drivers... Done
Installing seagate drivers... Done
Installing Apple iPod drivers... Done
WHY INSTALL THOSE FUCKERS 5 FUCKING TIMES?!
- iTunes installation fails multiple times without error code (unknown error occured, restoring to original state...),just said fuck it and clicked the shortcut after the ***th fail and it works just like this, THANKS FOR NOTIFYING ME (NOT)!
- iTunes has to restore the entire ipod, this was done with iTunes in the store I bought it already, thanks for nothing.
-restore takes 30+ minutes?!
-syncs the iPod 3 times afterwards.
*clicks close button*
*are you sure you want to quit? Sync in progress*
*oh shit, cancels*
*itunes quits*
*?!?!?*
*tries to import media library*
*seagate hdd suddenly not detected*
I'm fucking tired of this bullshit, windows and iTunes can go die in a fucking corner after getting ass raped while their genitals are being scraped off layer by fucking layer and dipped into fucking acid.15 -
Right, you pesky type initialization bug, I'm gonna find you. Hiding by throwing your exception in an external library won't help you. I'll download the sources, library by library, and look for you there too.
I *will* track you down, bastard, and exterminate you locally. Then, I'll make a pull request and kick your sorry ass off GitHub, off the internet and off the bloody surface of the earth. Oh, you have no idea how dead you're going to be when I'm done here!2 -
How motherfucking difficult can it be to port forward something internally?!
I've been on this for fucking hours and I'm so fucking done with this shit.
I know I'm doing something wrong myself but I can't find a good resource 😠8 -
Ever have this day:
Brain: I'm done for the day.
Me: Why can't I get this logic right?
Brain: I said I'm DONE

I explained my latest project to a non developer friend. I told him I'm almost done with the code, now I just need to debug and get it ready for production.
"Why don't you write code that doesn't have any bugs?"
"Holy shit! I never thought about that! Thank you so much, I'll make sure to write bug free code from now on".10 -
I know it's not done yet but OOOOOH boy I'm proud already.
Writing a JSON parser in Lua and MMMM it can parse arrays! It converts to valid Lua types, respects the different quotation marks, works with nested objects, and even is fault-tolerant to a degree (ignoring most invalid syntax)
Here's the JSON array I wrote to test, the call to my function, and another call to another function I wrote to pretty print the result. You can see the types are correctly parsed, and the indentation shows the nested structure! (You can see the auto-key re-start at 1)
Very proud. Just gotta make it work for key/value objects (curly bracket bois) and I'm golden! (Easier said than done. Also it's 3am so fuck, dude)15 -
Broken app is broken again. This app is broken so often and so hard, I'm struggling to give a damn.
These fuckers need to take their shitty project, code and managers especially, and launch them into Mars
They blame us and everyone else for their shit and I'm done with it. I need to sleep and not have these fools call me at all fucking hours.6 -
Why do we backend people have to be born handicapped for creating anything that doesn't look like absolute shit.
I'm trying to pick a primary color for my landing page for about three days now and I'm starting to lose my shit.
Can we all just start using fucking CLI apps and be done with the whole design thing.13 -
Oh man, today just gets better and better...
Manager: * Creates ticket, which has a link to a shared pdf, with each page being a link to another ticket in our JIRA with unrelated bugs of what we are currently working on. *
fullStackClown: I'm closing this ticket and putting this feedback in the original ticket that I assigned to you to review days ago.
Manager: Rages like a little baby and removes my access to said shared pdf.
fullStackClown: Welp, looks like I'm done for the day! Cheers!5 -
1. Still dying.
2. Withdrew my application for some job saying "the environment seems unproductive". I'm proud of me. I've never withdrew an application whenever I was unemployed so this is a first. This time it wasn't them telling me I'm not "the right fit" and I kinda feel like I should do this more often but like what if I could survive the hostile environment and earn something instead of literally continuing looking for jobs and this is giving me anxiety and I'm rambling but I can't stop oh my god what have I done... 🤧3 -
So, 27 hours. 27 hours I've been awake at this point.
I was actually planning on sleeping last night, but I was talking to my ex for a while (until around 2 am). Beat Portal again. Decided to get a thing or two done real quick. By the time I got that shit done, it was like 5, and I have to be up at like 6:45, so I felt like sleeping wasn't worth it anymore. Had a fairly good day at school, managed to stay awake (even through AP chemistry!), kinda started talking to a girl.
I'm fucking tired guys.16 -
pm: why this things are getting late in development.
me: no, I'm not late, on track, this will be done by end of the next week.
pm: but my estimation was for today EOD.
me: you never asked me for the estimation..
pm: we are here for that.
me: then do this yourself..*asshole* -

OK so I'm just going to announce this. I'm done with my WPF client for devRant. It's not really "Production" quality but it does what I want and well... it's good enough for me and I need to move on.
Here's the release and code if anyone is interested. If you want any other feature, you can just fork and implement it yourself.

Do you know what's better than getting work done. HAVING ANOTHER F****ING MEETING ABOUT WHAT WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE!
I COULD'VE HAD MOST OF THIS SHIT DONE BY NOW BUT I HAVE TO SPEND 1/2 OF EVERY DAY JUST EXPLAINING WHAT THE F***K I'M DOING, WHAT THE F**K EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING, AND THEN EXPLAINING WHY IT HASN"T BEEN F***ING DONE!
YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY EVERYONE IS LEAVING WHY YOU CAN'T RETAIN ANYONE? YOU HIRED THEM AS FREAKING ENGINEERS PROMISING THEM THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO DO THINGS AND THEY SPEND ALL DAY IN F***ING MEETINGS WASTING THEIR IQ AND WISHING FOR DEATH!
GGAAAHHHHH! BY THE EMPEROR PLEASE COMMISSAR END ME!4 -
I'm starting my first real/big project! I'm going to program a discord bot for my senior project with Python and I'm gonna have to do it in 25 days. the goal is to get it done in 15 and polish it more from there.4

I'm a front end intern and for nearly 9 months I've done almost exclusively CSS because that's the only thing my startup company really needed. I'm dying inside.15

Hello World!

This feature I'm building requires crossing over to a second application for some actions (fair, this reduces repetition), but the method used for it is kind of ridiculous.
To keep with the existing patterns, I followed suit, and added two PATCH and a DELETE routes, wrappers, and calls. (Typical CRUD + de/reactivate).
But. This freaking halfassed HTTP model doesn't support anything but POST and PUT! wtf. (Also, the various IDs, naming schemes, and required json data/formats differ across view, controller, and endpoints. but whatever?)
Two and a half hours later, and the feature is done and works wonderfully. Four times the functionality of the previous incarnation, and the code is only about 25% longer! haha.
Ahh, I'm complimenting myself again. (but somebody has to, right? 😅)
but really, when i want to get something done i'm actually surprised at how quickly it all comes together. Even when I need to patch API Guy's madness.
(and this time I actually found someone else's code in the mess! It was actually worse!)
I suppose taking a day off yesterday did me some good.rant double entendres are the best rest after rest root compliments herself expanding someone else's crud1 -
I get more work done when I know I'm leaving early than when I'm in the office for a whole day....2

Man, most memorable has to be the lead devops engineer from the first startup I worked at. My immediate team/friends called him Mr. DW - DW being short for Done and Working.
You see, Mr. DW was a brilliant devops engineer. He came up with excellent solutions to a lot of release, deployment, and data storage problems faced at the company (small genetics firm that ships servers with our analysis software on them). I am still very impressed by some of the solutions he came up with, and wish I had more time to study and learn about them before I left that company.
BUT - despite his brilliance, Mr. DW ALWAYS shipped broken stuff. For some reason this guy thinks that only testing a single happiest of happy path scenarios for whatever he is developing constitutes "everything will work as expected!" As soon as he said it was "done", but golly for him was it "done". By fucking God was that never the truth.
So, let me provide a basic example of how things would go:
my team: "Hey DW, we have a problem with X, can you fix this?"
DW: "Oh, sure. I bet it's a problem with <insert long explanations we don't care about we just want it fixed>"
my team: "....uhh, cool! Looking forward to the fix!"
... however long later...
DW: "OK, it's done. Here you go!"
my team: "Thanks! We'll get the fix into the processing pipelines"
... another short time later...
my team: "DW, this thing is broken. Look at all these failures"
DW: "How can that be? It was done! I tested it and it worked!"
my team: "Well, the failures say otherwise. How did you test?"
DW: "I just did <insert super basic thing>"
my team: "...... you know that's, like, not how things actually work for this part of the pipeline. right?"
DW: "..... But I thought it was XYZ?"
my team: "uhhhh, no, not even close. Can you please fix and let us know when it's done and working?"
DW: "... I'll fix it..."
And rinse and repeat the "it's done.. oh wait, it's broken" a good half dozen times on average. But, anyways, the birth of Mr. Done and Working - very often stuff was done, but rarely did it ever work!
I'm still friends with my team mates, and whenever we're talking and someone says something is done, we just have to ask if it's done AND working. We always get a laugh, sadly at the excuse of Mr. DW, but he dug his own hole in this regard.
Little cherry on top: So, the above happened with one of my friends. Mr. DW created installation media for one of our servers that was deployed in China. He tested it and "it was done!" Well, my friend flies out to China for on-site installation. He plugs the install medium in and goes for the install and it crashes and burns in a fire. Thankfully my friend knew the system well enough to be able to get everything installed and configured correctly minus the broken install media, but definitely the most insane example of "it's done!" but sure as he'll "it doesn't work!" we had from Mr. DW.2 -
Imagine naïvely treating your ONLY full-time employee like a robot that simply accomplishes tasks for you on a whim without even waiting for or even acknowledging their feedback (when that feedback has +10 years of experience of product development over you).
I wonder what it's like to operate at so idiotic a level on a day to day basis.
I don't care if you have all the fucking "vision" in the world, I'm actively searching for new positions, especially the ones that pay me double or triple what I'm earning now. I'm outta here, pronto tonto
Yeah, you founded a fucking company, been there, done that, 2 times even. just shut up6 -
maybe I'm really pedantic, but I fucking hate people who write code without a consistent form or style... putting spaces or breaks randomly or not at all is SO fucking annoying and I'm wasting time converting it to a more readable form... THEY FUCKING COULD HAVE DONE THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE FOR FUCK SAKE!!13

It's a new semester and the introductory class for a General Ed is going on.
Prof: What do you want to be when you are done with engineering?
Me: I'd like to be in the security domain but I'm still not sure.
Prof: Then why are you doing Computer Science? You can just get a job as a security personnel.

Ok so I was talking to my computer science teacher earlier and he said that he would rather use vim over PHPStorm for creating a laravel project. WTF!
Normally I would be cool with it, but he has pushed faulty code to git over 8 times. I'm just done.8 -

Omfg, after webdeving for so long, I recently started to learn python and image manipulation.
I'm in love.
What have I done lol2 -
Me: soooo can you get this done by next week?
Other dev: well who knows what rabbit hole I'll fall down. There's no way to tell.
Me: can you just avoid falling down a rabbit hole? We have a deadline.
Other dev: oh ya there's no way to know for sure.
Me: ....... Can you please try harder
Other dev: I'm trying I can't.
Me: ................6 -
My team are so needy and incapable of figuring anything out independently that I've basically not got any of my sprint tasks done so far. So today I told them that I was working from home for a day to actually get done work done, but I'm on Slack if they really need me.
The only observable difference now is that instead of just bugging me, they start every conversation with, "sorry, I know you're busy, but..."3 -
So there is this one person who keeps asking for help from everybody and expects them to do their code .... And surprisingly they do....
I was done with that shit when I was expected to code for the person .... So I did do it with a comment saying "I have no idea why I get paid" 😂😂😂
I'm waiting for the reviewer to notice this now 😂😂😂1 -
I'm juste laughing .
I just can't.. Ok :
1. I pay for 1Gb down, 750 Mb up.
They usually provide 10% more.
So did already post speed tests here.
Now for uknown reason, my download went to 600 Mbps.
Not a big deal, I I still called ISP.
After all tests done, they bumped my conexion. And even with bump I still have obly 550 Mbps.
But, LOOH AT THAT UPLOAD !!!
That upload is insane. And i'm pretty sure it's limited by my only 2.5 Gbps card
Fort lazy :

coding for your company and you know something doesn't work right.... sweet I'm done. I'll just fix that tomorrow.
coding for yourself and it works right but you still feel nervous about your users using it so it takes you an hour to build up the courage to push the changes live lol -
I have a confession to make. When i started programming it was done in my room all alone for around 6 months. I started watching porn while programming. And eventually only watched porn while coding to a point where I got turned on by programming.
I'm not sure if this further stimulated my love for programming or dimmed it. But sex and coding are now linked in my brain.7 -
I'm a bit tired of dev and applying for a customer support job for half my current income. During interview I already got promoted to technical support. Even dev job was possible, but I'm done. I've seen the wheel reinvented too much. Also, the looks of software became more important than ever and that's not something I do.
But I'm very positive now. I know the company already, they're great! Super culture! Always hired the right people and me once before as a py dev6 -

PS - I know it is pretty insignificant given that people here create much bigger things, but I'm proud of it!
PPS - Will post the previous small project I'd done. It was a browser based basic game.17 -
I got my girlfriend while I was coding. I was working in the library. She came over and ask me what I'm doing. I was writing the back-end for a project in js. She said that she had done some Java before and asked me whether they're related.I asked her in return that are ham and hamburger related. She said ofc, you put the hams between two buns and you got a hamburger. I said I'm gonna be the buns then :) I got her.4
-
• Plan out everything by taking notes on the rough functionality of the project and how it could be done in a preferably simple way
• Writing code, but documentating it while doing so
• Also trying to write clean code so it can be more easily built upon
• Also keeping everything simple. If I'm using nasty, unreadable one-liners because of efficiency advantages, I'm putting a comment there for what could alternatively be used + explaining it
• Abandon it because side projects never get done1 -
I might lose my job this week
I'm part of a team of 2 tech people
We were hired as programmers. But over these past 10 months we've done everything from helpdesk to fixing network infrastructure, i setup a backup server for the company, started properly managing the companies passwords, and a host of other things not in my contract.
But my boss is changing the deadline again and she refuses to listen to anyone's concerns, she doesn't understand the complexity of what she wants and since the best we've done so far can be considered at best a prototype in my opinion shes going to be disappointed
So at the next meeting me and my coworker are going to politely list our grivences point out all shes had us do at the same time and the impossible deadlines.
I've seen herpitch a fit for less so I'm fully prepared to be fired in rage in which case I'll compile the documentation and information on what we've done to email her.
But I'm pretty sure she won't find anything long term for the 40k salary shes expecting. Especially with how slow she is to do work herself. I was supposed to be on company health insurance since October 2020
In a way I'm kinda relieved at the potential of being fired.3 -
Well done firefox for not implementing some stuff from ES6, because you decided to do so. Isn't the releases of EcmaScript considered to be standards? I'm a Firefox fan, but damn, Chrome is so much more advanced.7
-
I got a kindle paper as a hand me down gift. And I feel I'm reading so much more than before, now!
I'm starting a new small novel
A Wrinkle in Time, I'll be reading alongside my girlfriend.
I'm 52% done with a book called
Python Tricks: The Book
Literally coolest book I've touched. Contains a bunch of different tidbits about the language, granted most of them confirmed my understanding, but it's still neat to read and learn about them in a more rigorous setting.
I'm 13% done with another book called
How to Day Trade for a Living
I'm heading for the crypto currency exchange, but with a catch,
I'm reading another book called
Genetic Algorithms with Python
You can probably already guess where I'm heading.
I feel armed with more knowledge and I feel like this is a really great way to start the New Year off.7 -
I'm a perfectionist and like things done the right way, but had to learn to let go and remind myself it's the clients site and their choice. No amount of logic and reasoning is going to stop a hellbent client from wanting the dumb things they want, even when it's bad for design, performance, usability and/or SEO.1

Just received a test for a job I'm interviewing for. I was interviewing for a C++ position. Practice test: Create an REST API using SpringBoot, Spring Data, document with Swagger and implement continuous integration testing.
To be fair, I also mentioned I'm fluent in Java. But I've never touched SpringBoot or done any backend webdev, since my intention was to never get near it.
Deadline: Sunday. Game on...4 -
My team lead be like when we're in a meeting with the boss:
He: I'll have a working session with her, we'll brainstorm on how to come up with a better design and improve such and such feature, once that's done, we would call you to have another meeting.
Boss: sounds good, I'm looking forward to it.
Me: *internally rolls eyes...*
He: thank you everyone.
.
*meeting done*
.
.
.
couple of minutes later, I get a message from him:
He: hey, it turns out I'm busy and I can't have that session with you, do come up with a new idea/design and share it with me.
Me: .... *fuck you, like you didn't know you were busy before making that fake promise*
.
.
.
The fucker will take credit again for things he didn't do.8 -
Had a recruiter say I was saying "wasting his time" by constantly declining job opportunities he sent via email (it was a mass email too). Another recruiter started questioning why I didn't work for this other company that didn't seem to have technology as a decent focus at its core. I'm honestly done with recruiters.3
-
I love getting a fucking email for every fucking change, instead of getting a list of desired changes.
You know what? Fuck this, I'm tired of being the nice guy, I'm not even getting paid for this, and you expect me to do it expediently on a Sunday. I'm done, you can find someone else to piss off for free.2 -
I'm taking a vacation in two weeks to hopefully recover from this burnout. I don't know if I can make it that long.
I've been trying to work on a ticket for the past two days. I don't even know what the ticket says. Just something about optimizing the Google pay object api. idk. I just can't. I need to have it done today though. Bleh.7 -
Ever have those days where you come into work thinking "Yes! I'm going to get so much done today!" and then you sit down at your computer and state blankly at your screen for a few hours?3
-
Today my boss told me to work more properly, because the massive feature I'm working is only halfway done.
Well thank you very much, obviously it's only halfway done yet. I'm responsible for the backend and the development for the frontend started today, by another guy who was working on another stuff until now. And I'm pretty sure we agreed that I will only do the backend...
Thanks for the uncalled critique. Great way to make me feel like my work is not appreciated. This motivated me very much to work the whole on the integration.2 -

So I'm a BI consultant, been doing this for about 6 years now, and I'm pretty good at the data stuffs. Now I had to complete a project for a client where we call a web service and it had to be done in .NET. I wrote a console app in C# that called the WS, dumped the data then a stored proc processed the staging tables into final tables that our visualization tool can consume.
It works, it's done.
Mind you I'm not a pure .NET developer.
And now that it's completed and working this fucking .NET dude that works for my client is basically giving me an attitude talking about "why wasn't it done as a Windows service? Blah, blah" Like WTF!!??? I get that he's the C# BSD but like chill bruh!!
It's annoying as fuck having to work on projects that are not your area of EXPERTISE and then be ridiculed by other elitist assholes about it.
Doesn't happen much, but fuck it's something I hate about dev. FYI, if it was the opposite I would just be asking questions for understanding, not being a sarcastic prick.

Lovely and thankful clients do exist!
Last week the client of our last project came to my desk to shake my hand and thank me for my well done work. Keeping in mind that I'm a junior dev and our company has around 3000 employees I was really flattered :)1 -
According to my doctor and chiropracter I'm burned out right now.
But I'm not ready to throw in the towel just yet. But my concentration and productivty have been gone for a few weeks now.
I mainly work alone and I'm currently trying to complete 4 projects. But I just can't seem to get it done anymore.
I know that when I'm in my peak I would only need 2 weeks for it. But I have been trying for 2.5 months know and getting nowhere.
Not really where the problem originated but probably with the ever changing specs and my main client that hasn't paid in 5 months. But he accounts for 80% of my profits, but the internal politics of the coperate stuff is making stuff hard.
Not really sure how to go from here yet, need to finish this but can't focus. Can't hire someone since my reseveres are gone and I can't take a holiday and relax because of the money and the voice in my head that says you have to get this done.
But the feeling of wanting to work but not getting anything done, like walking into a mental wall. Makes me wanne run into a real wall head first. Stupid body listen to reason so we can go on a holiday and relax!3 -
I work for a big financial company and they're saying i'm going to get a promotion but have to go through an interview process and be compared with external candidates. Basically that a new position will be created and I need to apply for it.
To me it feels like an insult as promotions should be a reward for good work done on the job?
And technically I'm like the most experienced, expert on the team...
Everyone comes to me asking for help or to explain things...23 -
Saw a classmate returning an plain text password from a function to try to push it in a JSON file for an API we have to build for class.
I try to correct him and show him a few things that are better practices and for security, I get yelled at and called a know-it-all for trying to help... I'm so done with people -.-4 -
It's great when you see your position being recruited for and after 2 months of scouting management still can't find someone better.
Hate me all you want I'm still the best you've got and apparently the best you're getting.
What are they going to do when I tell them I'm done after this project 😂🖕💯3 -
That's it, I'm done. I'm SO. FUCKING. DONE. Whoever created such a badly monkey ass coded shit and named it "Drupal" should have been aborted with a fucking hanger.
No one was here today because they were all at a Drupal Con that I never heard of. Glad I didn't. So they told me "yeah there are one year bug to fix, if you could do them all in a one work day that'd be greaaaaat". FUCK. YOU.
This shit is slowly sucking my passion away, and while I could spend 15 hours to code per day a few months ago, now I'm stuck to debugging shit that should have work without a Drupal environment. Tomorrow I'm going to see my manager and tell him to get me the fuck out of this and make me do something that would make me enjoy living again. I can't believe I'm getting trouble for this kind of low shit stuff, really.
And it started to rain. Fuck.6 -
I'm a junior dev less than 1 year into my first job out of college. I'm halfway done reading Clean Code (my first software book out of college) and I'm really enjoying it!
What should I read next? I was thinking something about design patterns. Should I go for the classic GoF book or continue with Robert C Martin and read "Agile Software Development, Principles, Patterns, and Practices"?9 -
Trying to write my intro for my page on uni's website.
It's making me frustrated cuz I'm starting to think of all the things I haven't done but I should've. 🙄 Compared to the rest, I've been very slow. 🐢
☹️🐢 is me now.2 -

I finished an exercise on Deletable Primes at http://catcoder.codingcontest.org just as part of my training for when I'm going to attend hackathons.
I could've done better than 08m 44s, by 3 minutes, if I hadn't made my initial IsPrime() method so damn inefficient that a large number wouldn't stop calculating, making me quickly debug and find the issue...
I used C#, because that's the language I currently just write most of my stuff in (and thus, I'm the fastest in out of all langs I know)

I'm so fucking sick of pouring hours of work into providing application code for someone who could give two shits about what I've done -- instead he completely fixates on what's missing or broken -- nevermind that I completely eliminated a bad UI thread bottleneck.
Sometimes I swear that coding is a thankless job and people just expect miracles.1 -
Been trying to learn code for almost two years now, started with C++, took a break because I couldn't figure out what to do with the knowledge, started Python 'cause I thought I'd be inspired by scripting and automating stuff, same thing happened, switched to java, same problem, aaaaaand I'm back to C++ and still can't figure out what the fuck I can do, I don't code anything and I'm tired of following tutorial in the hope of getting something interesting done
Long rant I know but fuck I'm so depressed about that...8 -
We have a Monday meeting at 07:30. Yes, I have to BE at work at 07:30.
Now, my boss knows full well that I have to fight through traffic every single fucking day and also that I travel for on average just over an hour. Some days we're looking at closer to 2 hours!
And, without fail, the meeting will start at 07:30 with or without me. There are days that I catch the arse end of the meeting (like today) or other days were I miss the meeting altogether.
I'm done with this company in any case and am currently looking for alternative employment. And I'm also done with going to these people and talking about this!9 -
Today I learned that docker makes all ports publicly available by default on Ubuntu servers using UFW.
Why? Because for some reason docker bypasses the UFW and has done so since 2014.
Thinking about this, I'm a bit irritated to say the least. Infuriated about such reckless behavior would be another reaction.
Anyhow, in case you have docker running on some forgotten Ubuntu server without a dedicated FW/VPN see https://github.com/chaifeng/... for more details.11 -
I'm taking a computer sciece course for Java and I'm just getting into it. I have done other similar things but in different languages and one day the class was discussing the meaning of static and all of a sudden he stops projecting his screen and says one moment and I look at what he's doing and he's googling what to do like WTH your supposed to be teaching us not feeding us answers from google7

Anyone know of any hosts NOT running on amazon/silicon valley/microsoft cloud?
I'm specifically looking for a host thats setup for or works well with python.
I'm about done with censorship and noplatforming. As a moderate that for a very long time was left of center, these practices are never justified.49 -
I'm so happy to have quit my current job. Just a few weeks to go. To see my colleague take weeks for an task I would have done in a day or two, gives me enough satisfaction to stop carrying him in front of our boss. Just hearing him say "I haven't done this before" Yeah it's not like I told you over and over how it works for two years.4

When you've been slinging divs all day and can't get that image to center, and finally you type "text-align: center" and think, yeah okay, I think I'm done for the day...

Hello !
I'm a fresh school dropout (against my will) without any diploma. I've learned programming from self teaching since three years; mostly doing web and apps development with golang, and c#.
I've already done some small projects, helped a lot of people with code, do some freelance and I'm now trying to build a SAAS.
I don't know what I'm supposed to do now, I'm completely lost for my future. What would you do if you were in this situation ?4 -
I'm freaking done trying to get Linux on my machine. I've tried every distro with many different versions of the kernel and I always run into the same problem on my desktop.
The computer super stutters for 2 seconds ish than freezes.
I've spent DAYS looking into this issue trying to find something. The worst part is that it can happen 5 minutes when I boot or 5 hours. At first I thought it was Compton. Then I thought I installed arch wrong. Maybe an update to the BIOS? How about downloading updated microcode? Maybe this obscure bug with AMD processors and setting power idle to typical? Nothing. I'm now behind on my school work because of the massive amount of time ive spent getting this fixed. It works just fine on my laptop, but it doesn't work on the machine I built to code with. I'm done. Give me Force Lightning, a red lightsaber, and call me a Sith baby because I'm joining the dark side. Here I come Windows.
For those who are wondering my setup:
Ryzen 7 1700
Rx 480
Asus x-370 prime
16 gb Corsair RAM
And no, Windows has never had this bug.31 -
When I say I will help SET UP a website, that does not mean I will DESIGN your website. There are CMS's/Website creators for that crap. I'm only here to show you how to configure php on Apache, then I'm done.
-
I used to think 30 minutes for an update ain't that bad, then I switched to Linux. pacman -Syu and you're done.
Now I'm using windows again due to PUBG and damn this feels like an eternity.8 -
Sensible question but I am asking it here!
As you know wifi packets can be sniffed using kali and a wifi adaptor.
I was wondering if the same thing can be done about car remote using raspberry pi ?
(I know theft is illegal everywhere and I'm not looking for trouble)13 -
Two notable things happened to me today on devRant:
1. I accidentally +1'd a random rant. I feel rude to undo it.
2. I accidentally reported a random comment. I feel stupid for having done such thing.
Now I'm expecting to get a notification saying It wasn't worth reporting :/4 -
I'm fucking done.
I honestly can't see how developers like to work for years on a single project. Nothing on the side, just the one project. Fuck I'm a year in and I've already been pushing my patience.
After working on something for half a year I want some diversity, but every time I ask for it I get the "we need you doing this" card. I've asked plenty of times for my manager to find someone else to do part of my work, and every time I get the same thing. "We're looking for someone, don't worry". Yeah my ass you've been saying that for months and I still haven't seen a job opening.
Honestly, in a month or so I'm gonna tell my manager that I'm quitting soon, so he has some time to actually go look for someone. If he doesn't, not my problem.
For real though, the company is nice, people are chill, I'm just lacking challenge, and no matter how many times I bring it up, nothing's being done with it.
What will I do when I quit? I have no fucking clue, but anything's better than doing the same repetitive shit day in day out. Fuck it I'll probably go balls deep on my own projects for a few months, see if I can generate an income there.
If that doesn't work out I'll just go back to the life of sucking someone's dick for a monthly salary.4 -
The only thing I studied from HTML is that you have to close anything you have opened.../>
I already had some experience with C++ and suddenly they suggested me to take a mentoring.
My mentor - Well, we're going to learn HTML.
- I'm busy. I'm learning python...
- What have you done? Did you learn the HTML?
- Eeh I need to do a neutral network project for the uni. Wait please...
- It's time to learn HTML.
- Eeh I have a deadline in these days. I have to make an Ethereum smart contract. Wait please...
- HTML!
- WAIT!
Finally I asked my mentor to stop this fucking recursion. I'm not going to learn it.1 -
I'm curious .... Devs seem to love quotes that try to give you some profound wisdom
Personally I don't care for them kind of like reading cards but id like to know if you guys have any 🤔
Mainly what you think of when you need to get things done what keeps you driven7 -
Wow... I haven't done complex/algorithmic level coding for maybe 6 months (yes that's how mindless my day job usually is)...
Now I just finished part of the code for a scheduling app I'm doing just for fun... Though there is also a use case at work but I don't have the free time to think about problems at this level... -
Last night, while under the full belief that I could write a very simple lisp interpreter, I was awake until stupid o'clock and to my credit I got the tokenizer working and produces an output of parsed code. It's really basic but I was pleased to have gotten anything correctly parsed at that time.
But I'm also sitting outside my apartment waiting for a locksmith because lack of sleep left me unprepared to function correctly today and I'm now locked out...
Well done me! -
Applied for a new job today! It's in a different city, but it's with a company I'm familiar with, doing tech I'm familiar with. They provided my current employer with managed hosting and occasional bugfix and upgrade support before we completely changed our tech stack last year.
I've been feeling sort of stuck in a hole for a while. I'm unsure about moving, but it's partly of my own making and I was unsure about starting here when all the tech was new to me. I've been here 3.5 years, my first actual dev job, and I do think I've done what I came here for. -
I was working on a thing at work which routes http requests from one endpoint and port to several local services.
I was halfway done when I noticed I just wrote a primitive reverse proxy.
Anyway, I'm calling it GRID, Gateway for REST Interface Distribution.
It's capable of dynamically attaching new routes and services and removing those during runtime via inbuilt typescript compilation service.
Each "runtime module" defines several routes which may have a middleware function (express.js style), which gets executed before forwarding the request to the local service.
I don't know why, but I'm kinda proud of this one; Feels like I made something actually useful for once.
Gonna maybe add a webUI with the monaco editor to write typescript modules without needing VSCode...
Also I may implement a load balancing system for scalability.
It comes with a cli too.
Gonna put it on github and post it here once I'm done with v1.19 -
jumped one of my backends from .NET 6 to .NET 8...
no breaking changes...
all nuget packages updated flawlessly...
well played microsoft, well played...
i'm incredibly suspicious and skeptical...
only thing missing is pushing the changes because bitbucket is doing "scheduled maintenence" that they apparently told no one about. 🤡

welp, guess i'm done for the next few hours6 -
Newer Dev here. Just recently started in a position as a developer. I'm tasked with consolidating our monitoring systems into one cohesive display. After lumping together all the indexes and helping build a custom API I'm now working on front end. Front end is easy, I've done it before. Should be no problem. I was wrong. I spent a whole day fiddling with a React dynamic table and the CSS to format it. Today, I stumble upon the react-table component. Got the results I was looking for in less than 2 hours. I'm convinced that this was a lesson better learned early on.

Hey devRanters 😁
I've recently done a Cerebro extension that allow people to search on devRant.
It's really new and not yet fully optimized. (also not on NPM yet)
But if some people want to use it before its "published" version, it's here:
https://github.com/Norech/...
It is also my first extension for Cerebro 😀
I'm also very happy to share it 😁2 -
Fuck! This is why I can't diet.
I can't get shit done, because I keep getting more things to fix. And I'm not talking everyday fixes, this is just plain retarded.
The asshole that my client hired thinks he's a dev. Takes projects that are working and makes small changes. Simply for him to say "I took this project and updated it for our needs."
Then when that shit eventually starts failing, I'm expected to fix it. It's not even that it takes me a long time to fix it. It's just that I'm looking at this thinking "Why are you not working?" Only to later find that, of course, it's been modified. By. Mr. Fucking. Dumbass.
Fuck!4 -
I suck doing frontend development. I'm slow, and I usually struggle to obtain the results I'm looking for... but today I'm happy because I almost finished the website for one of my side projects:
https://www.avatar-cli.dev
I'm going out of a long depression, and seeing things done is really helping me to improve my mood and have more energy.
By the way, thanks to the https://getzola.org project, it would have been impossible to me without it.9 -
To all those working from home...
How do you keep yourself motivated to stick to a schedule?
I've been at this for 7 months now; it was great for the first 2 months, now I can't seem to get my ass together.
I still get my work done, but that's the problem.
Because I'm not motivated to stick to the schedule I've made, I'm chipping away at my non-work time to get the work done.
Any advice?7 -
I'm so done with indeed and jobstreet. I couldn't find an office job that I passionately love. Most are looking for PHP devs, ASP.NET devs, Java devs or effing fresh graduates with 5 years of experience. I guess it's time for me to learn freelancing.1
-
I hate Eclipse.
I have the Student membership for a year but I can't use IntelliJ for my project because I HAVE to use Eclipse.
I'm around 80% - 90% done with my project, so I guess I won't have to deal with it much longer.3 -
I'm loving the bootcamp I'm in so far. I know I won't be a whiz kid once I'm done, but it gives me a great start for my career change! You'll only be as successful as the work you put into coding. Practice makes better as time goes on!2

Dear Devranters, since recruiters love personal websites (and I'm looking for work), I spent the last two days making my own personal site using all the tools I know, including some 3d modeling of the stack I know
DO YOU HAVE YOUR OWN SITES? can you share so I can compare? thanks.
site is here https://bransongitomeh.github.io and I'm attaching the 3D render of my stack done in blender and rendered using cycles
the site itself is done in HTML and CSS is using some paid bootstrap template and I put it all together using https://github.com/BransonGitomeh/... so its minified and stripped down (could do more) and it's cute I think.
I'm not sure if recruiters care if I should use react and vue and angular, lol. I figured I should use the right tool for the Job.
what do you think?39 -
The course videos were done in November 2022.
It's May 2024 and i'm still shuffling paperwork to get the damn thing published.
"Course authorship is down on our platform! Why is it taking so long for our authors to publish!? Whats going on here?!"
Maybe because nearly all of the authors you have full time jobs and a family like me and don't have time for an infinite revolving door of new tools and frameworks!!!! RAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHGHGHGHGHTHTHTHTHHHHH
Never again.1 -
*Googling for articles that explain something I'm trying to research*
Oh! This one is highly rated, sounds good!
*It's all written in python*
Ugh that's not helpful, ok next one
*Written in python*
Ok... Ok... Third times a charm
*Next 128 articles are done in python*
Has anyone considered that maybe not everyone uses python?
At least try writing it in Javascript or C++, much easier to adapt code to other languages... Maybe I'm just bitter because I hate python ¯\_(ツ)_/¯10 -
Sweet, sweet weekend. :)
Now that I'm done working for money, it's time for ... CS studies assignments! Yay!
(A friend once told me jokingly I was a sucker for pain. I'm inclined to agree now.)11 -

*Screaming Internally* I'm really, REALLY, stressed.
We just entered the final sprint for the finishing of a major project. This is my first "Launch" type achievement since I started working as a programmer(I started almost exactly a year ago)
We have a lot of work done on the project, and it's very clearly near "Completion" but we all know a programmers job is never done.
But specifically I've been thinking about the code i've worked on. I've been at the burnt out phase of the development for a week now, I haven't been getting a lot done, and I can't help but stress that my code is going to be what breaks on launch day and i'm going to get canned or something...
It's not that i'm a bad programmer(at least I don't think) but more or less that I just have been so stressed I think I've made some mistakes, and I think it's going to blow up in my face, and I might lose my job over it.
How do you guys deal with work stress?1 -
Can somebody stand behind me with a taser and tase me when I'm not productive.
I have been trying everything but can't get myself to get any work done. Which is stressing me out making it even harder to concentrate.
So I'm hoping the fear of being tasered can scare me into productivity.
The feeling of wanting to work but not being able to is one of the most annoying frustrating feelings in the world. And it's slowly destroying my business.
So anyone got some ideas, I just need to get like a week of work done. But been trying now for 2 months and got like a day of work done.
And has anyone build a fun to do list app yet that is complity gamified maybe I can trick myself in doing more.23 -
Oh man. When I look for a job after I'm done with school, I need to watch out for those "pay-per-line" bullshit contracts. More lines? Everyone can do that, but it will cause inefficiency just for the money. I could make a fucking Python Hello World program have 100 needed lines if I wanted to, but why would I? More lines = more typing ≠ more work.3
-
I've spent the last 10 days on an assignment for an interview. Instead of starting with the requirements right away I decided to fiddle around and tried to add typescript but got stuck for 3 days. Now I just need to write the docs and final PR description but I'm feeling really burn out. I'll be rejected if the code is shitty, and that thought made me try harder. But when I tried harder, in the back of my head I thought "What if I'm still rejected after trying so hard?" and that kills my motivation. I'll just get it done tomorrow. Next week I have another assignment, I'm using chatgpt for that one.15

I'm going to install zorin os, maybe kali.8 -
I've always thought that Wordpress is HOT CARBAGE for custom solutions. The opinion is influenced by devRant actually. And I'm really starting to see that after few of months working with it.
For context, it's a accommodation booking site with sub-theme that uses plugins such as Woocommerce Bookings. I didn't build it but I'm now developing and maintaining it.
The emails... I've tried to make them function properly. But no. Because we skip the fucking verification step to allow instant booking it just won't send them. I made yet another workaround and casted some spells. NOW IT SENDS THE EMAIL TWICE...
I'm done. It's good enough.3 -
Guys I'm so freaking happy!
My sem end exams are done
I finally got to sleep more than 3 hrs(slept for 10 hrs) after almost over a week
I can finally start with my projects and study something awesome
December is going to be fucking lit you guys!!!4 -
Have you ever worked in a team that actually did everything right?
I have never seen anyone talk about a team in which things got done.
I'm a solo coder, so, don't really know either way. Sounds like mostly, teams are a mess b/c they aren't done right for the most part?
I dont know actually, but seems that way.10 -
I'm going nuts with this isolation, so next on my agenda... let's learn flutter!
Anyone have some half decent app tuts (preferably not videos) that they can suggest? I'm sure the usual "to do" list has been done and dusted a billion times, I'm looking for something more explorative into different features of flutter rather then just a "build this"5 -
The mobile web browser is 80% done. I've pretty much added all the basic functions. I'm open for suggestions as usual.4
-
sensible naming stuff for readability? nah.. it's not like someone will read my code after i'm done here right?1

I hate applying for a job online. For some reason it just doesn't work out for me. I have a lot of humor but today my interviewer asked me if i was insecure doing that. I'm like "No, my whole family is like this".
But that's beside the point. Every company thinks they're so special. Well, some do have special benefits. But after a few times turned down my ego starts to break.
I'm so done with this new type of interviewing8 -
He got me. I'm so done for...
Pretty funny, cause maybe half a year ago there was an attack against my email, but I'm pretty sure he got stopped because of the 2FA. Not to mention that I immediately changed it for a password x times stronger than whay I had before 🤷♂️13 -
Shady business practices. You see a lot of stories of people getting fucked over on here. Companies giving applicants a "coding test" to get work done for free, or guys promising to pay when the work is done(and then bailing), deserve to be thrown screaming from helicopters.
Some quick advice for people starting out:
1. If it's important, get it in writing. Promises are worth precisely dick, unless it's legally binding.
2. Exercise caution in interviews. The shadier companies know a lot of applicants are desperate, and they take advantage of that fact if they're allowed to.
Not sure if I'm rambling at this point, but fuck it. 🤣 -
Being a freelancer is not only coding. Mostly (for me at least) it's mailing until you mail your client: "I'm done for today."
FUCK!!!2 -
Well I figured out why my delete button wasn't working...
I'm so burnt out and ready for school and this capstone project to be done.1 -
So I got everything done that I'm supposed to this month. Now usually I would try to get ahead of the rush. However, since now even upper management doesn't trust me to do my job I figure I will adopt the same development process as the rest of the group: do nothing for the first three weeks of the month and in the last week hastily make excuses for why nothing is done while doing just enough to justify my continued employment.
-
So it's Friday and keep in mind this is an open plan office and on fridays the office supplies unlimited beer on company time. Someone bought a pile of new rubber ducks for the office. Little did he know that when you squeeze them they squeak... I'm sure you can imagine the scene, very little work was done.1
-
I'm so used to phones that when I stretched with my 3DS in my hand I was fully prepped for the screens to auto-rotate.
what have you done to me3 -
With the invention of pip every project done with python just fucken angers me. Like mostly nothing fucken works if there is a single .py file in there. You can put your easy-install.sh up your ass if it just ~tries~ to install shit via pip before because IT WONT WORK FUCK THIS SHIT!
STOP USING PYTHON FOR PROJECTS YOU RELEASE PLS CUS SHITS UNREADABLE AND WONT WORK ON MY MACHINE. MAKE ROOM FOR PROJECTS MANAGED BY NPM OR SHIT LIKE THAT WHERE `npm install` ACTUALLY DOES IT'S JOB THANKS I'M ANGRY AF.
WHAT DOES COLLECTING EVEN MEAN AND WHEN IS IT DONE DUDE?!5 -
I'm picking old manuals and documents for recycling, enough to fill one handcart.
Just found a letter from old girlfriends and lovers, and a folder full of a closed form of soft non-gender hentai...
Why do I find homoerotic hentai art better then more normal hentai... I don't know, but I still do.
Well, I'm just gonna save a few... hehe
Btw, also found some paintings and drawings I forgot I've done, 15 years ago. :D2 -
Worked for 12 full intense hours and now that I'm done I dont know if I should eat, sleep or hit the gym...4
-
So my paper submission was rejected for the second time. I truly believed in what I have done but apparently these 2 years of research are going to the recycle bin. I didn't even print the thesis to save on paper, so it's the recycle bin in the computer I'm talking about..
I guess research is not for me after all..5 -
What's a good hobby project for learning React Native? I come from MEAN and C#/Java.
Just realized I haven't done much coding outside of work recently.... need to get more up to date.
Also correct me if I'm rwrong but it's like Cordova and Electron right? Code is JS and CSS, run everywhere as a native app?2 -
To me, writing authorization code for securing APIs is like having to fold an enormous pile of laundry and actually putting it all away afterward. It needs to be done but I'm not going to enjoy it.3
-
Oh God! I have a java exam coming up in two days and i'm so not done with my project work for evaluation. Truth is, i haven't even started yet since i was so focused on building up my javascript knowlegde. I'm fucked.4

Okay ranters, I'm asking for your help.
I'm currently an IT Technician at a facility. I am doing this part time while finishing up my last year of college. I graduate in April of 2017. I just received a job offer to do Web Development part time in the same city. I'm not sure if they will work with my schedule, but they say they will. I will need to learn PHP, because I haven't used it yet, but learning a new language is easy for me. I'm done with most of the difficult classes in my CS program, but I will need some time devoted to study. I'm unsure whether the job is a golden opportunity or if I'm going to screw myself over and be unable to graduate. What do you guys think?8 -
I'm working in a really really small start up company (I'm the only developer here with the owner being a programming professor in the local uni).
It's my first job after leaving uni and I knew it was a risky decision that I've made but it was my hometown and I could save some extra money by saving on rent and food, also I've always loved a good challenge.
But the challenge isn't working as excepted. It's been a year since I've started here and there was no planning for almost nothing, it's a "do as you think it's best but I'll probably won't like so you have to it again" kind of methodology. Also I've been hire to do an hybrid mobile app and I've ended up doing a full e-commerce website with shitty outdated technology that I've had no experience in using.
So for me I'm more than done. I'm tired of having my suggestions being completely ignored, of the lack of planning and instruction and the fact that I'm being underpaid for what I do.
Fuck it, I'm looking for a new job.3 -
"Smart" working doesn't mean stay online for 8 hours straight but at a different desk.
It means "be smart about your work" - if I'm done with my work then I'm f***ing done with my work.6 -
Guys I'm very bad at staying focused on one thing.
For a bit, I've been learning web development, and I've been working on a page for myself. Past few days I haven't really done anything because I'm trying to actually fucking graduate high school and as of right now I am NOT graduating.
But today I was taking my calculus final and I ended up talking to the teacher for a bit. He said he has an older tablet that he's trying to turn into a type of wall mounted home automation system. I believe he said something about using essentially a minimal Linux install to do it.
That really got me thinking, because I had a fairly similar idea a while ago (not exactly home automation, but just using an old tablet as a small Linux device), but never put in any actual effort to get it done. Now with winter break coming up for me, I really want to try and work on it some.
So before I start doing a fuckton of research on this, has anyone here ever done something similar to an Android device? I'm not talking about using that Linux Deploy app or a chroot. I'm talking about basically removing the Android environment, taking it down to a base Linux install. I just want to know if anyone can steer me in the right direction to save me some time3 -
I'm pulling an all-nighter. And I'm still nowhere close to being done for desktop. But mobile is pretty much there. Mind you, I have work in 6 hours and counting1
-
Just installed arch on my laptop...
I've always been a Debian guy before so blimey that install was painful but I'm glad I've done it.
I then installed sddm, for some reason it seems to be an old version maybe? I was expecting the look of sddm you get in kubuntu, any ideas?3 -
Me: This story doesn't account for certain edge cases. Who do I talk to?
Scrum master: Talk to the PO.
Me: Ok. Wait, the PO is out today to watch the eclipse.
SM: you can also talk to person2, 3 or 4.
Me: they're all out. I'm going home.
Ping me if they ever decide to get work done. -
I've been at work for nearly 4 hours and have gotten barely 1 hour of work done due to my amazingly slow computer. Currently I'm waiting for visual studio to start responding. It'll respond in about 10-15 min... Takes 40 min to boot up my PC and launch my VS solutions.13
-
I'm super pissed off... I recently got this job, I've been here for three months but in the current project for a month and a half... in this time I learned Laravel and the project is no big deal, I'm more than happy to learn but I'm working with a "Senior" programmer who "has a lot of experience" and "knows a lot" and "very friendly"... the thing is that we use Jira and BitBucket to assign work and control versions, however, the motherfucker doesn't do a shit and when I ask him about something, he totally ignores me... I checked on the latest merges and tickets and I've done like 50 within this month and a half and he has done like 15... He also made me do a big ass thing with a PDF and at the end he completely destroyed it and just used a table with no styles that looks like shit. He took 40 minutes to tell me something he already knew about the models because "I'm sorry, I got distracted"... What should I do?2
-
I'm so done with auth
it's more than a nightmare
it's a disgrace
why can't someone just be like "you know how auth and identity is hard? why don't we make it easy?"
I would pay so much for that9 -
Why must coming up with ideas be so fucking difficult, trying to work out names for variables and working out a file structure that makes sense for the SDK I'm working on is literally the only thing holding me back at this stage...
Ugh being a perfectionist and programmer is not a good mix .-.
EDIT: also just remembered of 2 YouTube series I want to make but can't think of a title so I haven't done them... Fantastic1 -
I'm studying Python at the moment and I'm looking for some easy projects to do in order to gain hands on experience. After having written the code of a dice simulator for Risk!, I'm now thinking of a Twitter bot as my next project. Has anybody done it? Would you reccomend doing it?
Since joining devRant I've felt much more motivated to progress in learning Python and if it felt really rewarding to play Risk! without rolling the dice, it also thanks to you all. Sorry for ths cheesy nuance and for this not being a rant.3 -
I'm hosting dancers for BluesShout! a dance festival in Chicago. Three of the people I'm hosting are developers (two girls, one guy). There are a lot of engineering types that dance. If you haven't done any social dancing, you should really give it a shot. Find a Lindy/Swing, Blues or Contra group and take a class. You might love it. 💃💜3

So after 3 months of working ( which implies a 2h trip from home to get to the office ), going to college ( another 1h from home to get there ) and making a thesis to get a fucking Bachelor degree. I'm kind of done with everything except the job. I mean, I can't focus seriously in anything besides coding. So my question for you guys is, How do you get the important stuff done even if you don't wanna do it ?
-
So I'm in the middle of writing a script for episode 1 of my how I would have done it series and fuck me, I feel so sorry for big youtubers that script every video, this is annoying me just from a basic script!!!
-
I'm interning and working on something above my skill level and it works for the most part but I think I may have done it completely wrong for like the past week :') everyone is on paid vacation and I'm just sitting here like a baby bird with a broken wing
"halp"
Pls no anger if it doesn't do exactly what it is supposed to. I am frail.2 -
You know what I've noticed? I've been applying for jobs lately, and it has occurred to me that most job postings for software developer require proficiency in a framework instead of a language.
Do these people even know what the fuck they want? If I know the fucking language then I can pick up the god damn framework pretty damn quickly
😠 Fucking douche bags!
... 😧 ok I'm done1 -
Brain : Hey, there's this task that needs to be done
Me : oh sure, let me do it
* tries to do it unsuccessfully a few times *
Brain : ...
Me : ...
Brain : DON'T YOU --
Me : * Opens devrant and starts scrolling *
Seriously though, if you guys could suggest some good cmake tutorials ( I'm using VSCode and GCC 8.1.0 for compilation ) - that'd be swell :)
Keep rocking!2 -
After only having done linux and web projects for the past few years, our company took over an old WindowsForms program written by a guy who only (poorly) knows C. It's some of the most foul code I've ever seen... And I'm the only one in the company who knows how to write C#...1

For US salaried developers here, a young soon-to-be employed graduate has a question...
When it comes to salaried work, is it just a matter of work "close to 40 hours but really just get your work done" or should I be trying to fill a seat for 8 hours a day even if I don't have anything to work on? And if I'm non-exempt (elligible for overtime over 40hrs), is it reasonable for me to be here 9 hours a day, or should I be capping it off at 8?
I know these are questions for my employer but it's gonna be a bit before I actually start work and I'm curious.9 -
Working on a library for a discord bot I'm gonna make.. the library is about 80% done and I can already build a working bot with it. But now all those new questions appear in my head about things I am going to make like "how do I design permissions" and similar stuff.... AM I OVERTHINKING THIS TOO MUCH?!4
-
I get plenty of sleep and wake up to my manager talking about escalating tickets. I'm on support this week and my queue was empty yesterday, but there were several new "urgent" requests that never got assigned to me.
Wait, so I'm responsible to assigning tickets to myself now? Our support is so shitty now. Our good document got hacked to pieces and now I can't find anything, and the customer support people are constantly bitching if things aren't done right now for tickets I was assigned while I was asleep.1 -
I spent the last 2 days, my father's birthday, and my birthday working on a bug for the game in developing for mobile. And I've done everything to try and fix it. Optimize the vertices, deleted assets not in use, organized all my assets into separate folders, and you know what. Fuck it. If "app not installed" I'm going to port it to PC.
-
Soo today (Sunday) I received a Email from my boss. He wants me to do a fucking huge project done by next Friday.
This "so amazing new idea" exists for like 5 years already. So I said I'd be done this Tuesday. Him not knowing I'll be copy&pasting this all the way 😂😂.
Not that I'm lazy, but just that why should I recreate something that exists for years now.5 -
The ones I have now! I have a team of great people I'm working with. We get good work done and have alot of laughs. And since we work for a huge fortune 500 company, we have plenty of people in the enterprise to complain to each other about!
-
Hey DevRant Fam! , i really hope everyone is doing very well as always! :D <3 I'm currently now learning c# MVC5 which is incredibly new to me and something I've personally never seen and or done, but i love a challenge!.
Now onto something bit more 'somewhat' personal :D, for about 5 years I've been undergoing Immunotherapy Treatment because i suffered from serve chronic eczema and last week was my last ever consultation! I'm incredibly happy to be done with it, another stress lifted off my shoulders :D.
Anyways guys and gals, i really hope everyone is having an amazing day and or night wherever you may be in this world :D
Best wishes <3

3d Prints.
So... At this time we think that everything is already invented...
And I keep making new stuff...
New Idea, mini vacuum cleaner... only found one design online and was so badly done... So I made mine.
Happens all the time... Search, nothing I like, do it myself. And worst, I'm not even good at CAD programs lol.
Any Ideas for tools to make?4 -
Recommendations for growing a new open source project? I'm all ears if anyone has done or has any thoughts on this as my company just open sourced our Flutter mobile app since it lines up with platform values.
I'm also super excited 😍4 -
Me vs. Code Moocher:
CM: Hey, did you do the Chapter 6 homework?
Me: Did You...?
CM: Yes... (with confidence but an odd pause) But it doesn't work.
Me: Sorry I'm not done with it either I can help you.
I hate people like this. He could've asked me for my help or waited to ask the Prof.
But he outright asked for my work. It wouldn't be the first time.
FIGURE IT OUT YOURSELF MOTHERFUCKER!!!4 -
During the interview I was told that overtime will be paid. I'm working on a project which requires a lot of overtime so we can meet deadline. I was told that there is no budget for overtime.
I have also done 50 hours of overtime so that means 50 hours of overtime will not be paid to me.9 -

Been coding for 8 years now, working for at least 6-7 ( freelancing mostly ). Have done multiple big projects along the way, and have not written a single test case ever. Everything works just fine, I usually test things alongside coding stuff. Could someone explain the benefits of creating tests? You can slap me in the face for not doing it if you want ( after explaining why it's so bad ). btw, i'm a web developer ( symfony / angular / vue )5 -
I'm not sure if I'd say I'm "deeply inspired" but I spent more time coding a personal project this week than I've spent on any other project in a similar timeframe for the past several years. All because I wanted to build a personal dashboard/startpage that queries the APIs of a couple of MMOs I play and displays it nicely on a grid of cards.
I wrote my own API wrapper, built a Flask site for the first time in years, tried out a few things I've never done before, and stuffed the whole thing in a docker container.
I'm no web developer (my job is more about the infrastructure than the web apps which run on it) so I'm learning a lot just through trial and error and it's actually kind of fun. -
I'm playing with a Z80 SBC, and I was trying to run the old Star Trek game on it. I had a C source file, and used a makefile to try to compile it. It failed due to various library issues, but I just checked the folder (I had done this earlier today) and there's an EXE of the Star Trek game sitting there. I don't know how I compiled it for Windows. I didn't use any CC or GCC commands. I'm just confused.

I'm so god damn sick of unattended upgrades and OS updates. I've switched from Ubuntu to NixOS for a few months now already and it's the greatest thing I've ever done, because it's declarative, it's rational and it's fast. Unfortunately today I had to switch back to Ubuntu for the day, because I don't have my main laptop with me and now I remember why I hate this OS. This piece of shit garbage keeps running unattended upgrades updates when I'm doing busy work. Like I'm writing my Jenkinsfiles and sitting in work meetings and then suddenly a fucking unattended upgrade eats 100% CPU and turns my friendly laptop into a jet turbine :(((6
-
So, i'm starting to hate being young...
I'm 19, and have been programming for 6 years, almost half of my life, people assume that due to my young age I must be an inexperienced incompetent, shit on me for every line of code I write, insult me every time I make a sintax error...
Well, now I'm working on my own on my first big project, a videogame (it's the reason I started programming in the first place), nobody blames me for their errors, I don't have to justify mi choices to people who don't want to understand and I can stop if I have to study for university...
All of this just to say one thing, please, before blaming the kid, think what you might have done wrong!5 -
I've been a user of NetBeans IDE for PHP for quite sometime. I use it both at work and at home for personal projects. Lately I haven't done many personal projects so I fired it up on my Mac only to find it utilising 100% of all my CPU cores. This has always been an issue with NetBeans for years and it just seems like they can't be bothered to fix it.
So now I'm on the search for a replacement. At work now I use PHPStorm, but the $200 yearly license for small personal projects is a bit much. So for the time being I'm going to be trying out Atom with the ide-php package. It's a shame really as NetBeans is one of the good IDEs out there, but it's such a resource hog that I'm not sure how people can do any work on it.4 -
I've been complaining for 2 years about working on a project with shitty external developers. Finally get another project done by internal developers and the architecture and decisions made were just as shitty. Like, there are Soap web services implemented solely for the web app ui alongside rest services for the mobile app. Now I'm left to maintain the failed attempt to correct the architecture 3 years ago and all the devs already left. Oh joy.
-
Seriously, wtf give the work to someone else, claiming that "I'm too busy to do this", when all that other person does is come asking you for help, and not only do you have to figure out what needs to be done, you need to figure out how the other person fucked it up and try to fix it without hurting any feelings. Oh, and, yes, I was too busy for doing what is essentially double work.
-
Not sure if it still counts as a 'dev' goal but for 2o19 I'd like to finally stop being a 'ooh, this is a mess, I can fix this..just one more thing and I'm done for today' person. Even my bosses tell me to go home already, so I hope this year I will be able to do just that: turn my head off and go home, do other things in life I also love.2
-
I'm planning to rewrite two months(part time) worth of work done in android sdk. Wanna go for a hybrid framework. Is this a bad idea? Which framework do you suggest as far as stability is concerned? I don't care about ease of learning, new languages don't bother me2
-
Oh, hello dear PO. You suddenly wanted a change to be done after being silent for months?
Silly, silly you. I'm not some kind of rack you drag out of the closet whenever it suits you.
I am now assigned to another project. Your project can't be completed for months, and it ain't my fault. -
Needed to setup the database for the web app on one of our Raspberry pis...
Gave the group's sysadmin the sql file and told him to tell me when he was done so I could change the connections in the app. - < two days ago
While he was supposed to take care of it I continued developing the app.
Today I went to ask him what was up with the db, said he wasn't able to import.
This guy, didn't read the error, didn't tell me about it, asked no-one for help and just went back to YouTube for two fucking days.
I'm so done with group projects1 -
Today is nice... Since the rest of my team is in another country and they're off.
I'm in but I can actually take my time and get shit done at my own pace.
No distractions, no needing to explain things for the Nth time....3 -
I'd like the ability to convince my teammates to gradually work on a project rather than working obsessively on it the day before it's due. I don't like waiting for the last minute to get things done, I like finishing things early so I'm not stressing myself out.
-
Ah, now that I'm done spending my first hour of the day typing a long decline to a request for me to work overtime, I can finally get back to work.
-
I've been a front-end developer for 12 years. I've done PHP, Angular 1, React, Vue, etc. I'm considered a lead at my company.
Now a manager has decided that all of the projects except mine are switching to Blazor. He insists that my project won't switch, but I don't trust him.
Am I better off biting the bullet and learning Blazor (a prospect that I'm not exactly thrilled about) or cutting out and looking for a new place where my existing skills will be useful?3 -
Right now I'm standing in this Apple Reseller store waiting in the line and there's an old man who doesn't understand a fuck of his iPhone, and it turns out it's about setting up his fucksucking mail! I'm waiting for half an hour already, am so fucking done with this.
There's also this useless shit of an "Apple Expert" employee who doesn't do a thing. He constantly walks through the store very nervous and I'm getting fucking sick of this guy...2 -
I'm in Europe and searched for a few spots along my route with Google maps app, the search results contained USA
well done Google.. maybe you need 10 000 new devs to fix that1 -
I'm not going to get any real work done today, am I...
Here I sit waiting for the next problem to pop up because of silly untested edge cases by this team.
Ugh... 😮💨5 -
Ok so I'm a dev at a small tech company and I've been working here for 3 months now and I've done 0 dev10
-
I'm not sure if anyone besides me has ever done this. But I'm using git locally on my machine as a system restore of sorts for one of my programs. As well as a means to see what files are changing as i continue to use the program.

I've just started freelancing on PeoplePerHour. I'm in talks to secure a job migrating a C# webapp to a desktop scenario using HTML5 embedded within WPF, but I've never done this as a solo project before. What sort of price is sensible to charge for this? I'm working in GBP1
-
Been waiting 5 minutes already. I'm done Windows, shut down already. What the hell are you waiting for?7

Android studio is doing like 80% of the work for me, and I'm still not done with this tiny app. :/4

Today's task: create a wireframe for the website.
Teamlead doesn't give a fucc about me, k I'm chilling then. I looked at their work and I saw a picture where a stickman types the domain in the browser and then the site appears (as a printscreen of the existing site I've done so far) -
It took me 5 hours today to configure some WiFi APs only to find out I'm too stupid for this shit and I misunderstood a setting which broke the whole thing.
After that realization it was done in a few minutes. -
I don't know if I'm 'good'.
I've only been doing this for a few years.
I do think I'm 'responsible'. I'll admit my mistakes, I'll fix them, I'm happy to get out of my comfort zone. I don't mind working with various folks to get the job done (even if that produces a rant or too... that's healthy). If someone has a different idea I'm happy to try it, and I communicate with those I work with about what is up and such. -
To all my Machine Learning engineers, Ive been doing Frontend development for 6 years and I'm done. Wanting to get into machine learning because I've always loved data.
1. What is your day to day like?
2. Any advice for my learning journey?
Thank you🙏14 -
tl;dr Which new laptop + Linux distro combo should I get when seeking for minimal configuration and maintenance hassle?
Hey devRant gang!
I'm looking for a new laptop: which one is supported out-of-the-box by Ubuntu based Linux distros like Elementary OS?
Why Elementary OS you ask? Well, I want to move away from macOS and/but keep the minimal (and pretty) design/interface!
But: I don't want to waste time configuring stuff after install or a kernel update. I don't have time for that: I need to get shit done.
As much as I dislike closed source/evil corporate stuff the fact of the matter is that my MacBook Pro Just Works (and lets me get shit done).3 -
finally done with my goals for today and i tried testing it out on google chrome and it worked nice, and then i tried it to other browsers.......
i'm just going to sleep for tonight and just do it tomorrow
time check: 4:31 AM here in the Philippines2 -
For the first time I work for an old and absolutely massive company. I have never seen systems so byzantine and so outdated ever before. With how the project management on top of it all has been going so far I'm really impressed that anything gets done at all.2
-
I'm a C# dev, I'm used to updating all my package dependencies by clicking on one button "Update All", and it's done.
I was consulting for another project written in python, it seems there's no way to update libraries like that due to circular dependency hell. Is it so?3 -
I wish I could do what I used to do, and get lost in programming. I used to be able to go for hours without stopping, but now I'm having trouble keeping focus for more than an hour at a time. Its making everything take far longer than it should, like this project I'm just about done with that should have been done a month ago.
It doesn't help that I'm two months behind on my rent, there's nowt but a couple of sausages left in the freezer, and I'm fast running out of coffee and cigarettes. If I could find out what the fuck is wrong with me at the moment, that'd be great.9 -
My last day before vacation and I'm assigned a task without specs which could not be done in 1 day. I don't know what I'm doing and I feel very sorry for my colleague who covers me during my vacation.1

Folks are bragging about having 99 microservices. I don't know for what joy folks create that much microservices. They may have their own reason. I'm trying to understand what is the workflow for small companies with few microservices. Could anyone shed some light? I'm thinking of building orchestrator where I don't have fancy features like k8s and get the basic job done. Focused more on simplicity and UX.4

Getting pretty sick of proposal improvements to the business I work for to then be knocked back before I even finish/ they finish reading the proposal.
From now on I come to work, do job, if no work available do nothing, go home!!
I'm done!! -
I would consider myself a Jedi Knight when it comes to using Visual Studio, but has anybody done any work that sounds like this description? I don't think I've ever wrote code that integrated systems like this.. I'll certainly ask for more information but I'm always surprised by the experience this community has and wanted to see if someone can scare me away from this4

at the age of 12 I was bored so I started with html as I wanted to make a website, at the age of 14-15 is started with pure php, at 16 I started my first IT study for second line support and at 18-19 I finished my first IT study and started my second IT study for support mangement and when I'm done with it I'm planning on doing a third one for data center engineering.

So reinstalled to learn React Native... and React as well while I'm at it. Can that be done or I would learn React and build a webapp with it first? (I don't want to build a webapp though...)
Also I want to target Android but seems all books target iOS... Are there any books for Android?
I'm just following the Facebook GitHub now.14 -
froceRtl instead of forceRtl wasted 3 hours of my time, not sure who to blame, Javascript and the fact it takes any damn name, or the fact I was too blind to notice it, or the fact VS Code stood there laughing :\2

What is the best way for an intermediate programmer to gain experience? The jobs I had before gave little to no feedback on my work other than was it done on time and does it work, I'm not confident enough in my knowledge to contribute to open source and I feel like I need guidance on best practices and such. Any suggestions are welcome.1

I have a software developer interview tomorrow. Never really done a professional one as I've not yet graduated but I'm just looking for tips and some guidance on what I should prepare for and what questions to expect. Also advice on how I should handle myself and what sort of stuff to talk about. Thanks!2

to present an TPS ASP.NET site with target features/objectives for our finals in prog subj
working time: 1 night
and i tell you right now, it's the most shittiest site (front end && back end) i have ever done, and i'm never going back. 1/4 only of our class actually accomplished the target features. -
I'm all for enhancing the user experience. To some extent, making the UI get out of the way to focus on getting things done is admirable!
But it's absolutely *NOT* acceptable to absolutely change how established convention works.
For example, clicking a link should not perform a state change. Use a flipping button!
Checkboxes should not act like radio buttons!
(apparently non-interactable) text should not perform actions!2 -
I'm interning at a mech eng company. Our products have many possible permutations that customers can choose from a spec sheet.
The backend for us mechanical designers is equivalent to copying and pasting the same code (with slight changes) into a massive switch statement depending on the program's options. So many near duplicate drawings. Each with individual settings that need to be tweaked and linked to other new duplicates every time a new order comes in.
As a programmer it drives me absolute bonkers! I've talked to them about automating it but "we've just always done it this way, so it probably won't change". Well, as soon as I'm done grinding this current project, I'm hoping to put together a practical demo to change their minds.2 -
Question for Droid gurus here.
Is there any way to use different fonts in android for different languages ?
I have changed ttf to add urdu fonts but then I'm seeing boxes instead of emoji and symbols. Can I add it to urdu only.
On web we have CSS unicode-range in @font-face which sets a boundary for different fonts to be used for different unicode characters/ranges.
Can this be done in android system some way ?
I'm not talking about using it in an app but in whole droid.1 -
Rejected again.
From 4 companies who were interested to hire me I'm now down to 1 who I'm still waiting for an answer after technical interview was done.
Im at loss of fucking words.19 -
Is there anything worse than Peoplesoft? I'm trying to sign up for a new job and everything is slow, timing out, or poorly designed. I've been at this for 4 hours now and I'm not even halfway done!!3

When all you did the half the day was browse devrant and neglect your fixed table header problem with semantic UI. Kill me.1

I've a whole new respect for ElasticSearch. It's codebase is so insanely complex, that I'm seriously contemplating tracing out the flow on a big ass chart. Any suggestions on how you people work and debug so many asynchronous flows?
I have been working on a bug, for almost 6 days (to be read as 3 consecutive weekends), and the best I've done is, conceptually isolate where it's happening. I'm an open source noob, but I feel I've learnt a whole lot during sifting through ES' codebase. :)2 -
I wish senior people would just admit if they don't know something or are unsure. I hate spending time implementing a feature and spending more time troubleshooting it only to ask for help and be questioned why I'm "doing it like that" in the first place...
YOU TOLD ME THIS IS HOW IT IS DONE!!!1 -

Working on a new project for my employer. Just like every project I've done for them, they ask for something incredibly specific, then look at me like I'm crazy when I build it. They ask for something completely different at every meeting, then ask if I can do it in two weeks.
Man, I have no idea what to do about these people.2 -
Got a BPOS company commission a website. WordPress of all things.
But that's fine.
The client sends us a PSD to refer to. Buys a theme to modify and gives us a time frame.
Stupid client. Their design doesn't even line up with the theme.
We are getting paid peanuts for this.
Font sizes not specified.
Colours not specified.
No content
Responsive design expected but not designed
Behavior not explained
Custom footer expected that took a week to code from scratch.
Custom accordion section coded from scratch
We decided that the 15 of April would be the last date. It's the 27th and I'm still fixing shit.
We didn't get paid enough for this.
The QC for the site was done on the 24th!
I'm still working on it, for free.
The liason on the client side goes to Australia for vacation and the content is not being put on the site. They ask for content work too.
I'm just about to go postal. -
Was struggling to find motivation to start coding again. So I decided to get back to college and finish what I started. I'm just done with my first semester as top in class.
Now, I just can't stop. I'm always craving for more projects. My brain even stopped craving for games. And I've always been a big gamer.
Do I need help? Is it unhealthy?3 -
Looking for advice.
A client has asked me to set up a PoE CCTV system capable of being monitored off-site. I've looked at various camera systems but all of the apps (I'm checking Play store) have bad reviews.
Rather than using an NVR I'm wondering if it's possible to use Linux or Windows on a PC connected to a PoE switch (and the internet.
Anyone done anything like this and can recommend software?6 -
I'm an idiot, almost
I needed a tablet for uni but I also wanted it to be quite powerful and with an OS I could actually get things done with (this precluded android and iOS)
I also am quite pricacy concerned but I never did much to prevent it
I ended up buying a surface pro, for its weight and power
joined with a mac at home and a google nexus in my hands... my privacy is fucked :)1 -
Good deed done for he day, my friend was versioning his application by using zip folders with the date as the name of the folder. Introduced him to git because the university hasn't thought us how to use it yet and now he is delighted! Note I'm in my final year and college has barely mentioned using version control

I'm done with Face Book. It is more like FUCKBOOK. I get nasty shit sent to me every day. I report porn shit and that doesn't go against there community standards but I call someone a BITCHBOY for posting nasty shit to my friend and I get a 30 ban. FUCK YOU FACE BOOK. I'm done with your double standard. I guess the pussy and porn videos that doesn't go against there community standards are paid accounts.1

Looking for advice...
I'm working on a personal assistant type application, my own Jarvis.
I've been using Python3 and it's at a point I'm confident to host it on server, but it consists of no commands.
Just a server, communication and other functions.
What process would you use for commands?
As in, would you just have loads of if statements? If so, what about plugins?
I'm using Yapsy as a plugin framework, so I'd like to be able to drop plugin files and build up the command list.
This is why I haven't done commands yet...2 -
Email arrives, contains a list of deadlines AND descriptions of new features and changes to portal... all news to me, Really?! All for next month you say? Didn't we just assign a different project to the team? Did we replace the 50% who leave this week yet? no.... Well done project management... Slow clap for you guys.... It's so idiotic I'm not even mad...

Alright members of the underground, voodoo community called ''computer science''.
I am done with my environment's subjective, limited POV and i'm here to ask the holy council of DevRant a simple question.
I'd hate to call it a thread but i'm secretly thumbs upping for it.
Alright, genies of the lamp, i ask of you the answer to "React-native vs Kotlin vs Xamarin" with a follow-up question of "which to consider continuing woth if I tried all of them, don't have any preferences, and don't know what kind of projects i'm going to work on?"4 -
Enterprise Architect after morning requirements session: "Well that is actually more simple than I thought. I don't think we'll need the full four days we have scheduled for this. What do you think."
Me: "Yeah, I don't think it will take four days."
*** Hours later right before end of day***
EA: "So how's it going?"
Me: "Pretty good... [details]..."
EA: "So are we still on track to be done by end of day tomorrow?"
Me: "Wait, what?"
EA: "You agreed it would be done in two days, remember?"
Me: "No, I don't remember that."
EA: "Yeah I asked if it could be done in two days and you said yes. Anyway, I'm heading out, just make sure it's done by end of day tomorrow."1 -
I'm a student, got an internship for the summer.
I thought i was going to be writing C++ code, as that was the job description.
Instead I'm doing fullstack development for a build test automation tool.
It's not terrible (there's definitely a loy of nice stuff), but i definitely do not want to do fullstack permanently (no offense).
Hopefully i can get a non fullstack job next time, but i wish I'd done that this time. -
Just wanna rant about something in general..
I'm quite serious about time commitments. I can't stand people who change their words at the last minute because all these weeks they were just fuckng around not preparing and doing that had to be done.
For fucks fake, we have been discussing every intricate details of things that had to be done!!
And even worse, they expect you to bear the consequence and delay all your plans for their convenience..

Well, after almost a year of doing self study and what not... I decided to enroll in a bootcamp. Partially to help keep me accountable, mostly to help with networking and making contacts in the industry around me. I'm really stoked for it in spite of skepticism. They do offer guaranteed job placement if you finish the course, which was a major selling point for me. I'm curious if anyone on here has attended one? Thoughts? Success stories? Horror stories? From the research I've done, seems like you get what you put into it.

What are the best practices when making a blogging website?
I'm creating an addition to my personal website to include a blog, and want to follow the best practices for it. Do I just save everything in a JSON? Or do I just make every entry a "page" in Gatsby/React? What have you all done? Would love to see some examples.4 -
Hi devs,so I'm looking for suggestions on projects to work on,I've got alot of time as I am done with school and since there's strikes at university I'm only going there in March.

After delaying it for a few months, i'm finally starting to work on my final college project. It's going to be done in Java and Mongo. I'm not sure about the web part of the project, because i've never done anything in that part besides basic html and css. I'll probably try JavaScript.
Just wanted to share this because i've made the hardest step - actually started working on it.
Kinda feeling proud of myself.
Kinda feeling weird of being proud of such a thing.
Don't wish me luck, wish me the will to keep not giving up when it's the hardest -
I spend weeks working on an application for my boss just to have him make me scrap it when I'm done just because there was something wrong with design.2
-
As much as I may look down on Python for how simple it may look, I'm happy of it for having done a pomodoro with music playing in that language.
I'm sure that will help in dealing with my 4 projects and exams due before a month. -
I just had a thought about what may set good and not so good developers apart...
I'm now 30 and for the past 3-4 years, I haven't done any more big personal projects. But at work, going on and on about good coding practices and making sure things are done right, more time spent upfront on design than coding, etc. And doing the greenfield stuff.
And I feel like maybe there biggest difference is that I started to code as a kid... And making those mistakes early and learning all the different things have a compounding effect.
So if we all become slower and even stagnant at 30 in picking stuff up... I'm always going to have this advantage/lead (skill/experience gap)
Or maybe in just rambling and getting nowhere.... -
My study assignments in assembly for this semester are done.
I'm glad. However, I'll probably miss it, as I have other projects/things to tend to that won't allow me to carry on with these studies.
It's such an easy, yet primitive thing. Coding simple programs with it is quite enjoyable and relaxing and I'll miss that a great deal. -
Today, or wednesday (can't do anything tomorrow, family is coming over) I'm going to start writing documentation for my project.
Problem: Never wrote documentation before.
I only have the database done (still need to write the migrations and seed, but the structure is done). How do I even write documentation for a bunch of tables? I guess I'll learn that this week.
Wish me luck, I'll need it!! -
Building apps in 30 mins at conferences.
First 5 mins: I'm gonna do the entire thing using just some boilerplate.
After 25 mins: I'm just gonna copy some unimportant code from the one I already made... ...And it's done!
Footnote: The people who put themselves up for it are always great! I've learnt a lot from such guys. Massive respect ✌️ -
I'm SO FUCKING PROUD of whoever put this here. It's besn forever since anyone's even mentioned memes as a concept in my high school, much less done/written something for the meme.

I've recently been promoted and I'm going from hourly to salaried. Amidst this crisis and the promotion I've gotten lost in the big changes and forgot to ask the simple questions.
When tf do I leave work if I'm not tracking my hours anymore? (Or for the near future, log off of work)
I know the general consensus is "when the work is done", but we all know the work is never truly done5 -
Windows apparently does reboots for updates n stuff outside your normal time of usage nowadays.
Windows apparently also thinks that your normal usage shouldn't be over 12 hours.
So now i have to decide if I'm more in the mood for random updates in the morning when i need to get shit done (ugh) or at night when i have finally time to relax. -
Working with non-existing specs. Just have to pick a guess what arguments and columns that will be needed. Right now it feels like I'm up to a very fuzzy task, that will need to be done over and over again until it gets right, instead of doing it right once and for all. If this is agile, then agile is a waste of time!5

Anyone here do animation?
So I'm developing this command-line animation program. It'll obviously only be for quick stuff
I'm thinking of accepting frames and an expression to order, overlay and diff/patch frames.
What kinds of things should I implement? I have done basically no animation ever.

Some pigs just don't fly, even with sufficient thrust.
Been struggling for days trying to get my IntelliJ-on-Linux-VM setup running on Windows, and it's abysmally slow. Latencies for the UI are counted in seconds.
Screw it, I'm reinstalling my entire dev stack direct on Windows. I love Linux, but I will not use it when the price is that I cannot get anything done.8 -
I enjoy working through problems with friends and coworkers, teaching and learning, and generally helping get work done. I feel a bit like I'm being used as a tool and not a resource though. At first I was helping someone with code here and there, but now it's every day like clockwork, and I'm basically doing their work for them. I'm trying to guide them by explaining my thought process, but it almost seems sometimes like they're just waiting for answers to type.
On the plus side I'm getting hella practice on multiple projects and it probably looks good to higher ups being so resourceful, but can a guy get either a break or a raise? Lol -
Alright, everyone speaks of Github and it's usefulness and all. I have gone on there, I have done the tutorial a couple of times. And I still am not grasping it. Does the fact I'm a student make it this way? Is this useful for a student or is it beyond my skill level and coding needs?7
-
ugh what have I done to myself?
Today I started this codingame thing someone mentioned on here, but because I'm stubborn I've played every puzzle or game in bash so far...
So yeah, I'm loosing to all the cool kids using C++ or python even on simple stuff and I'm always struggling with this weird syntax - like "$" or not ... whitespace? parenthesis?
I mean I do like some bash but these games are really not made for it4 -
any advice for how to write an effective annual self-evaluation?
I feel like I'm always doing my best to contribute to the team and handles all task assigned smoothly but looking at the daily notes of what I've done since last year they all seem so trivial ==''1 -
Not really a rant, but I quit the job I hated for one that pays more and will also give me a set schedule so that I can actually get some coding done for once! (Last job had me on random open or close shifts and that shit fucks with your head after a while) I'm so stoked. Looks like I might finish my projects before Christmas after all, whooo!

Seriously fuck dreamhost.
First, their configuration is more complicated than it needs to be. Then their website is slow and buggy. Penultimately, their support people don't understand English, are bots, or are dumb as bricks. Finally, they don't have a custom ALIAS record for interop with Heroku.
I'm so glad I'm almost done switching! (Last domain will be transferred away on Friday!). -
I know Python but never done web-development and needed it for one or two project. The requirement is some data-api and graph. There is flask and django but I'm not sure how should I proceed. ????11

I'm a junior, now getting used to the idea of having to finish something in the same day if it's urgent for production and therefore having to clock in extra hours.
It's depressing, in a way.. I'm hoping to avoid this as much as I can and just get work done within the usual 7.5 hours.2 -
I recently refactored a form with complex client side interactivity for one of my clients replacing jquery with vuejs in the process and I'm absolutely baffled by how easier it is to reason about everything when you think of the UI as a function of the state. Only devs who have done both imperative and declarative DOM manipulation at some point in their life can understand the joy of doing this. And all of this can be done with just a simple script tag without having to bring in complex build process that has plagued the Javascript ecosystem.

Omg... I can't concentrate today. Always there is a phone ringing, People talking, mentor asking me if i'm done yet... My god. What do I do to concentrate for longer than 2 minutes? I can't tell them to fuck off right?10

Hello, I'm new to programming and I need to write a website that allow some people to bet for sports match scores (without any money, just for fun). I want it to have leaderboard, personal statistics, easy way to add and remove teams from database (last one for administrator). My question is what programming language/maybe framework will be the best for that? I'm interested only in this bet system because rest is almost done. Thanks for help4
-
Google play console is so fucking confusing, I'm trying to get my app to open beta testing stage, I've completed all the steps and done the full roll out, but the status of the app is still pending publication (3 days), wtf does "Pending publication" means do I need to publish the app for production in order for beta testing release to work, or I have to wait for google to approve the beta release for publish?
I'm lost5 -
Any recommendations on resources that teach how to build a secure email/password authentication system? I'm looking for something language/framework agnostic, I want to understand the process, why stuff is done the way it's done, and implement it in Rust.
I've been searching but all I can find are some rather shallow posts from companies trying to sell their authentication services. I have zero knowledge on how cryptography and hashing works, I'm pretty lost on what to use and how to use it.3 -
Junior angular dev, looking for some fun projects to throw on my github. I haven't done any coding for my public github since I started working full time, so it looks like I'm MIA! Want to show off my newly gained skills :)
Anything html/css/boostrap/js/jquery/angular/jasmine/karma/node I'm down for, or if you've got any fun projects related to web development (backend, DB, etc) that's an unfamiliar language I'd probably take a shot at that too!
I built a portfolio before and deployed it to digital ocean and assigned it to my own google purchased .com, but that's the most "impressive" thing I've done so far.1 -

I'm tired and stressed and it's friday
all my work is done that is required for monday, i should do testing and code cleanup, but i'm burned out so instead i'm gonna play with grafana and see what I can do with it, seems cool and something more interesting to do than code cleanup and wanting to cry2 -
What do y'all think? I'm new here, junior. I finish my tasks generally well within the allotted time. At the moment I take my time, look over my work and try make sure I've done things correctly / as best I can. At first I tried to work quickly and show that I was motivated. Now I've really lowered my acceleration because it feels like no one else is in a rush.. except for when there's deadline pressure. It feels like no one really expects me to get much done. Like, change the theme colors, you've got 3 days. I'm done in like an hour. So I go sloooooooow, change something, go on Reddit or devrant, change something else. Don't check that change in yet, they'll know you've been finished for hours...
Do you think this is the right approach? Or should I try apply myself more, get more done, do extra tasks when I have time? From what I've read online, it's generally not worth working "more" than necessary because it's not appreciated and just results in people expecting more from you.
Thoughts?1 -
when you get a random DM from somebody on their first day on another team and they ask you about onboarding stuff
i'm not sure why me as i'm on another team and not even 2 months here
i guess i updated some documentation but there was no explanation for why me and at the end of a hard day of work im too done to bother asking why me1 -
I couldn't find a program for this so I'm making one. Cli based. Have a json object you need to unmarshal in golang? Yeah I was getting tired AF making structs for all of them with the json tag name over and over, so I'm mid way through a python script that generates the structs for you. I'll link it here when I'm done.
And if you're wondering why python? Dynamic object definitions. That's why it's trouble in go in the first place.3 -
What's the general process and toolset for reverse engineering a C++ DLL? I've never done this, but I may get a gig and I'm not about to reject it just because I don't know how to do the work.7

Any recommendations and tips for monorepo setups to share stuff between multiple typescript nuxtjs projects for the frontend and some nestjs backend ones? And all applications are deployed in docker containers.
I feel like I'm going crazy, everything I try is broken, or not fully implemented, or has a shitton of gotchas and customization that must be done on a case by case basis.
This is the most unfun shit I've done in a while.1
