My morning:
Me: Why did you just delete the failing unit tests?
Intern: I debugged it for a while and found one of the other developers broke it with his recent changes. I couldn't fix it.
Me: Did you let him know he broke it?
Intern: No.
Me: So you just deleted it and decided to pretend the feature isn't broken?
Intern: ... No ... I mean ... well you told us yesterday we needed to have all the tests passing.
(I NEED a stress ball people)30 -
An area sales rep once rang me to tell me his iPhone screen was cracked and was going blurry around some sections.
I told him to fetch me to look, and I will see what I can do.
5 minutes later I get a SCREENSHOT from his phone asking if I can see the crack and blurry edges.
HOW FUCKING DUMB ARE THESE PEOPLE!!!
I mean, come on. He seriously said when I called him: "But I can see the crack and blurry bits on the screenshot on my phone"4 -
Dear people of Subway, just because i am using cmd, it doesnt mean i am
"Hacking your wifi network" and asking me to stop is rather unneccessary25 -
Heard this from a young lady today in the train while she was talking on phone:
"Software guys has the easiest job of all. All they do is sit in front of the computer and does stuff. That doesn't challenge you does it? No offence, I mean I'm not trying to offend anybody blah blah blah...."
Ummm Sorry lady I think you just offended thousands of people although you tried your best not to offend them.30 -
I'm never making fun of people who go to Stack Overflow for answers ever again.
I mean, have you guys seen this? A leap-second causing 100% CPU use in MySQL, and a dude figures it out like it was nothing, and provides a quick solution!
https://stackoverflow.com/a/...12 -
For the love of dog, if I select English on your online store, it doesnt mean I live in the UK, therefore show me prices in £ pounds, It just means I cannot speak German but I need to read English, but pay in € Euros!!! Can people please stop confusing Language with Location!!!!6

To people who don't know how to use Linux: Just because I use nano instead of gedit or any other GUI text editor does not mean I'm showing off. Why can't you understand that ssh-ing into a server and opening a file in the terminal itself to edit three lines of configuration is much easier than opening FileZilla, connecting, downloading the file, making the changes and uploading it again. It's fine if you want to do it that way. But please don't judge me for doing it my way.
To people who are good with Linux: Can you please stop suggesting me to use vim instead, EVERY FUCKING TIME? I know it's more powerful, but I haven't been using Linux enough to have surpassed it's learning curve. Plus I google up how to use it and do use it when I have the need. Please let me be?
To people who tell me to use Windows for everything: Go suck a fat dick, you uncultured morons.10 -
I am pretty sick of people treating developers like forever alone geeks that roam the internet 24/7
I mean I am one but my point stands..
It does !2 -
I hate it when people say they want to "GET a new girlfriend"...
Shouldn't it be "FIND a new girlfriend"?
I mean you can't just go into the supermarket and get some butter, milk and a new girlfriend. You can't buy them. By saying that, you seem to me as if you're treating women as objects. I know it's technically possible to buy a girlfriend, but that's prostitution.
I think that "GET a new girlfriend" just doesn't sound right...
Your opinions?38 -
How do people just go about deleting databases when they don't mean to?
"Ah, a database!"
*Flaps hands at the keyboard until something happens*
"Oops, I deleted the database :/"
(*Posts a rant about accidentally deleting the database on devRant*)

I find it funny to see how people very often go into defense mode (of those companies) when I call them (a select amount of companies) mass surveillance companies.
I mean, when you search for the definition of a surveillance compatible (or, surveillance) and see what those companies (Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, AOL, Yahoo, Paltalk), it outright matches that of (a) surveillance company/companies.
Then, when you look at the scale they perform this at (mass scale, mass amount of people/users), it fits the definition of a mass surveillance company...
No matter how you turn it, those companies are, per definition, (mass) surveillance companies (apart from the fact that they're integrated within worlds biggest created government powered mass surveillance program ever).3 -
Wait! I screenshot this from the advert of a company who advertises code academy.
Does this mean they want to train people on how to edit minified codes? 🙄
Cos it looks like this guy just opened jquery.min.js and took a picture.
I can't help it. 💔😂😂😂9 -
The amount of rants on here I see of 'Devs' complaining that other non-tech people aren't knowledgable/ can't understand 'simple' explanations / etc and are mean, or even cruel to those non-techy people is alarming.
Just because you've spent a lot of time on something youre interested in, doesn't mean:
A. Everyone else is interested in it.
B. Everyone knows everything about it.
These 'Devs' are the reason most Universities require mandatory social classes so they can make sure you can talk to people in a nice manner and get your point across.
Majority of the time I need to explain a concept I find simple or I know to someone, I try to find an analogy about something both parties know. I know that pulling the documentation information and giving to them will just result in more questions and they won't understand.
You just gotta know how to talk to people without getting angry at them for being who they are, human.
String TLDR = "Don't be a dick because someone doesn't know something you do"10 -
Fucking co-worker!!
This asshole blamed the delay in delivery of the project on me.
I mean what the fuck dude, I was just helping you out. That wasn't even my job.
Pathetic people!5 -
Playing cool with people who
- Do the same mistakes repeatedly
- Do not think through use cases and blabber out the first thing that comes to their heads
- Are always downplaying the effort others put into their work
- Do not know when to have a discussion
- Do not take responsibility for their mess
- Are rude to newbies who are trying their best
- Are mean to the minimum wage workers1 -
People, please understand
1GB != 1024MB
1GB == 1000MB
1GiB != 1024MB
1GiB == 1024MiB
The MebiByte, GibiByte, KibiByte and others "biByte"s were defined at the end of XX century. How can be possible that people (I mean people which study/teach informatics, electronics or something similar) still don't know what is it?16 -
Today I:
Me: "You wrapped 2 p tags and one div inside a button tag....why?"
Other dude: "What do you mean why?" * in condescending tone
Aaaaaaaaaaaand
I lost my shit.
To make things short. My manager told me I have to try harder to not speak to people in intimidating ways.
In all fairness...mr "associates in programming with 0 css experience" WAS condescending when I asked him why he did what he did.
The little shit earned it. And he will probably think twice about his damned tone when speaking to me.29 -
Being on devRant genuinely scares me. I mean, I know C#, Entity Framework, basic SQL, basic HTML (who doesn't?) and some Angular, but most people here know so,so much more. Maker me feel quite dumb :/22

Did anyone feel like IT is the thing in college not a lot of people really cared about?
Friend 1: "im going for chem engineering"
Everyone: *applaudes*
Friend 2: "im going for medicine"
Everyone: *applaudes*
Me: "im going for IT!"
Everyone: "uh, what about you Friend 4? What did you take?"
...
And i dont just mean it socially, the university doesnt pay much attention to us until they need something fixed or needs us to make something more convinient for them.12 -
I FUCKING HATE PEOPLE WHO ALWAYS BUY NEW STUFF WHEN THEIR OLD THINGS WORK PERFECTLY FINE!
FFS PEOPLE ARE JUST FUCKING PIECES OF SHIT NOWADAYS! I MEAN, FIRST THEYRE LIKE, oh we need to save the planet bla bla.... THEN THEIR LIKE!
OMFG! NEW IPHONE X WOLOLO MUST HAVE! OMG MY OLD PHONE IS WORKING PERFECTLY FINE BUT ITS THE NEW IPHONE OMG!

Me: don't limit yourself! Learn more than one thing, experiment and learn more.
Devrant: don't use x. X is a piece of shit and its not worth it. This is better, and you are wrong.
I hate highly opinionated people. Devrant seems to be full of them.
I seriously believe this is why people like AlexDelarge left. Sooo many punchable motherfuckers up in this bitch man.
"Fucking leave then" ----> go fuck yourself. This platform is great. Some of y'all are great. Having frustrated virgins lurking around does not mean that all of us that like fucking around in here needs to leave.19 -
God damn it. Today i took my laptop to school and you cant guess how many people though i’m a hacker. It’s quite annoying. But just because you use linux doesnt mean you are a hacker! You uneducated pieces of dumbass!!!!10
-
So tired of people hating on tools, frameworks, languages, libraries without investing the time to fully understand the offering.
Just because you don’t understand it, does not mean it’s shitty.3 -
You shouldn't look for people with 10 years experience. You shouldn't exclude them but the people w/o experience need experience anyways and maybe they bring something fresh to your tables..
I know "designers" who would say they have 10+y.e. but I mean they design websites that to this day, use table layout and oldish looking design language.. (ofc there are examples that state the opposite!)
Measuring people by their years with experience is just silly..9 -
I don't understand... How can people prefer complicated web pages with fancy design over the simple and effective design of your router configuration page?
I mean, look at it... It's beautiful. If I ever asked as a client to a developer to build me a website, it'd look just like this.13 -
Just curious, how is it like to work as a developer. I mean, as a profession and not a hobby or freelancing.
From devRant, so far I know that you work in an office, the managers and bosses are assholes, and people always write unmanageable and undocumented code.
What else is it like? Do you get to work alone or do you have to work with people? Do you stay there all day long?
I know its still going to be a while for me, but I want to know how it will be like.24 -
FUCKING PEOPLE THAT USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT! THIS SHIT RANT IS FOR YOU CUNTS!
I mean, IF YOU ARE FUCKING DEAF DONT USE FUCKING EARPHONES AND TURN THE FUCKING VOLUME UP SO HIGH THAT EVERYONE CAN HEAR YOUR SHITTY
Dubstep, EDM, K-Pop OR ANY OTHER FUCKING MUSIC! thank you AND FUCK OFF!
And also IF YOU WANT TO GET ON THE FUCKING BUS, MAKE ROOM FOR PEOPLE TO GET OUT FIRST! I mean, the entrance STAYS FUCKING OPEN! AND FUCKING OTHER PEOPLE ALSO HAVE TO LEAVE THE FUCKING BUS FIRST!
I LEARNED THAT IN FUCKING KINDERGARTEN!12 -
Thanks devrant for making me feel part of a really nice community! I mean... Before devrant I was only able to hear "oh, it is not that bad" or "take it easy" as a response... Now I'm reading really nice answers from people that really loves the IT, and people that always works on the worst side of the companies, doing all the hardwork. I don't feel alone anymore!4
-
Dear fanboys (and probably past and I hope not future me),
Just because I use alternative product doesn’t mean you can attack me personally. And because you use some service/product doesn’t mean it’s automatically fitting for all people or it’s perfect and doesn’t have any cons.
Just because you use X thing and you’re happy with it (which is perfectly OK), doesn’t mean I can’t be perfectly happy with Y thing.
Imagine if only legal haircut was yours favorite. Wouldn’t be that boring if everyone wore exact same haircut? That’s like some 1984 shit.
I’m not saying that criticizing things is bad - it’s great actually, but in civilized way.
Don’t attack a person using something and automatically assume that they are an idiots, but rather point out why that something is bad.
And please, be different. If you’re happy with that phone which you use, don’t go buy a new one just because someone told you that your current one is bad without pointing out why.
Sincerely,
Athlon
No one is gonna care anyways...8 -
Pet peeve: When people use "Jira" to mean story / task / sprint / epic.
*Real* pet peeve: When people use it with more than one of the above meanings in the same sentence.
"Will we finish this Jira (story) by the time we close the Jira (sprint) on Monday?"
Dude, wtf. I actually have to decode your sentences to figure out what you're on about. Just learn the right terminology. It's not hard.10 -
I mean I've read rants on here about people not knowing the basics of programming, but 15 lectures in I would assume that the other students knew the difference between a char and a string at least.
Guess not.3 -
(maybe) unpopular opinion
I hate the I'm at 127.0.0.1|localhost meme
It's a loopback address
It's like saying I live at home
Like why do people think it's funny or smart to post stuff like that
Even the doormat that was going around isn't necessary accurate, since it's per machine (in this case a human).
Like if you have the home saying it's localhost then you are obviously not.
Maybe I'm just being mean here but it's like really annoying after a while4 -
FUCK
Have you ever worked with people that constantly asks you what to do? People who are in the same spot as you, I mean.
- Hey, you should start debugging this while I finish this menu
+ So what's failing?
- I don't know man, but there's a bug
+ But where?
- You should look for it, I'm trying to link this to the controller
+ How can you not know?
- Do you know?
+ Where should I look for it? Here?
- ...
(One crappy solution after) + Here it is, I'm moving to something else

Although I see how powerful Vim (with all its variants) is, I still don't get why people are so into it.
I mean, it's 2017, we have IDEs and some of them are very good, such as VS for C#, Eclipse for C++ and so on!
* grabs popcorn *...10 -
recently people have been worried about what people were going to say I.e "no hate" , don't hold back!
In devrant we only mean light hearted banter if we are pissed we don't want to hurt you we are pissed at a thing and not directly at you. Not that I speak for dfox or trogus but I'm sure that's what they are going for, and it's what ive seen!
We are nice here... This isn't YouTube , it's a credit to devs we are nice people. Hell it isn't stack overflow!
Also I'm brutally honest at times but I love you really.10 -
Still fail to see why people give a fuck if you're self taught or have a degree. (By people I mean other developers, not employers.)
Why does it matter? Trick question: it doesn't matter. All that matters is their code.
And fun fact: both educated and self taught people can write shitty code.
Idk it just seems like unnecessary division in a group of people that all do the same fucking thing: program.29 -
My manager wonders why I don't respond to people in a timely fashion.
I'm watching 83 Slack channels and private messages, I get 45 emails an hour, I'm on-call, and I have 125 servers to monitor.
Number of Jira tickets I received in the last 3 days? One single fucking ticket.
Open a damn ticket and I'll shove you to the bottom of the backlog, just like everybody else... I mean, I'll be able to track your request and not loose it.7 -
Just because a developer is a programming wizard does not mean we are physical hardware installation wizards as well.
I hate when people ask me to setup their personal home systems; especially networked printers.3 -
And so net neutrality dies in the US... Mofo Ajit Pai why you do this to us? Literally 80 percent of people are against this repeal. So what the heck does he do? Repeal em of course. Hope he burns in hell forever. By that I mean I hope he has to have really slow internet forever. Now that would be justice.2

Had to change my avatars clothes, dont want people thinking i dont wash.
Went to check my closet on the app, shit... Im a poor bastard. Dont have enough money, cough i mean points to get that new pair of shoes ive been eyeing.
Got me thinking, we are all essentially sugar mommies and daddies. I always wanted to give that a go, so far im liking it.
Long story short - thanks for this space everyone including the community
#liveLongAndProsper Dev Rant2 -
Ok, so I'm one of the new folks here, and spent some time looking around.
And I've read so many of you write about levels of insanity at work that just baffles me.
Why do people do that to themselves? And no, I don't mean you sales-manager, or your boss who hired the wrong kind of dev, I mean YOU.
You are a developer, currently the market for devs is so large you can literally pick your jobs. And if you don't know how to find a new job, just Google (easy mode, search on LinkedIn) a company which specializes in recruiting, there are tons of them, and they will gladly search an employer for you.
Don't get stuck in a job that sucks - you will kill your motivation, and you deserve better.3 -
I love when people post a piece of their code here and got ranted for bad practices then posts "haha i was kidding, i would never do this" on the comment section.
I mean, we can learn here to, you're not suposed to be right 100% of the time, stop been so arrogant :/2 -
Another smartass! Here we go!
Look, I'm an idiot and I'm absolutely aware of it. But you don't get to give an opinion without having the knowledge or skills. I may be young-ish and stupid, but that doesn't mean you're right, or that you know better than me ffs. If I'm down to earth, that doesn't mean you're above me. If you want my respect, then behave yourself. Just because you think you've "schooled me"...doesn't mean you did.
... Aaaaaand those are stuff I'll never say in real life. Gah. I can't lecture people I don't care about, but some do piss me off regardless. And what is with this sharp increase of people pissing me off these day? 🤔 🤔 🤔5 -
People working on the "breakthrough Tongue Detection" for "animojis" at Apple Inc. must be telling their relatives they are drug dealers. I mean what could be more embarrassing than this.4
-
I wish people understood this more: "If class A is a friend of B, and B is a friend of C, that does not mean A is a friend of C."1
-
Hey, hey, if THE SJWs made GitHub rename it's 'master', then what's gonna happen to all the embedded systems people?
I mean, MISO, MOSI?4 -
Wtf is all this talk of AI regulation all of the sudden? We have barely achieved anything on AI and they already wanna put chaines on it?
Just because people are pussies who are afraid that skynet will develop rape-robots who go around giving std's to everybody they see doenst mean there should be regulations on something thats still in diapers.
ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS PROBABLY GOING TO BE DONE BY FUCKING POLITICIONS WHO PROBABLY THINK AI ONLY MEANS KILLER ROBOTS.5 -
Ranting to my team lead:
- The guy has a masters in CS but codes like an one armed monkey!
- Look, you'll see with time that education doesn't mean much. Smart people are smart, dumb people are dumb.4 -

I've invested so much time in PHP and now people are telling me it's rubbish ?? 😧😰😢😢
C'mon ! Trying to learn (or get familiar) with a whole new language now will basically mean I'm going back to square 1. That helpless feeling of being a beginner at something 😢
JavaScript, here I come .21 -
I love that its 2024, and yet sometimes you still have to delete the /bin and /obj folders from a C# project to remove build errors that are in fact, not build errors...
...and people here hate node.js / npm
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
but come on down in the comments all you C# worshippers and please enlighten me what I am doing wrong... definitely couldn't be C# right?
also explain why 'clean' must not REALLY mean clean 🤡17 -

Do you ever think of organizations as people? People personify Google and stuff all the time, but I mean something deeper.
When I look at devRant threads, I feel like we're all part of a collective consciousness, growing and thinking and making decisions. Society is a living thing of its own, in the same way that living cells unknowingly make up an individual body. When a question is asked from one node, another node answers, and the result is a repository of questions, answers, opinions, and jokes on an app that might appear as the scrolling thoughts of a singular mind rife with pure, aggressively structured information.12 -
Everyone talks about crappy categories of user on Stackoverflow - help vampires, rep whores, etc. - but the category of "people who don't care about the stupid mind games, politics or internet points and just want to help others" is so small people apparently don't even think it can exist.
I mean sheesh, I answer on there in my free time to just lend a hand to people, usually in a couple of niche tags that have very little info elsewhere, even for beginners. Of course there's questions that are beyond salvaging and just random homework dumps, but the majority are from genuinely confused users who simply don't know the correct terms to search for.
A question is not inherently evil just because its asker has misunderstood a key concept.
I'm not even asking you to help the poor sods, I'm just asking you to allow me to help without calling me a rep whore or a moron who'd be better talking to bots on reddit 🙄3 -
A senior colleague of mine just announced she'll be leaving by the end of the year.
😐 Why do people I specifically need always leave? Am I that destructive? 😢
I know I'm being dramatic, but like... 😖😣😫
I mean, I could see this as an opportunity, but nah. I rather wallow in self-pity. 😭18 -
I took a Computer ethics class some time ago, and at some point, we talked about honesty in Computer Science.
There was one thing that bothered me that we never had the chance to touch on, but how do I know that the button I'm clicking is doing what I want it to do?
I mean seriously there is really nothing that is stopping someone from making fake buttons that pretend to do what they say they are doing. I might be uninstalling something on my computer, but can I "really" trust that the software was "completely" removed?
As a developer I always strive for honesty, but that doesn't mean other people are.
How do you guys deal with this?13 -
Some of the smartest and brightest people I know are arrogant as fuck.
And I believe they have all the right to do so, for they have earned it.
Be kind and leechers will drain the living soul out of you.
If you aspire to achieve greatness for self, then setting boundaries is important.
This does not mean, you have to harsh to everyone, rather it's about figuring out whom to give your time and attention.9 -
To all the people who constantly complain about devRant not being good enough…
First off, who the fuck cares? I mean honestly, does anyone give a fuck? People have been saying for YEARS that they hate devrant and that it needs to change in whatever fucked up dev idea way that we all think the world should actually work. The real fun is how this platform evolves into different phases over time. The fun is interacting with devs anonymously talking about really anything. It doesn’t matter - as long as it’s interesting or entertaining it’s fine. Don’t fucking pretend that you are a goddamn professional elitist asshole bc we all know everyone here is weird and stupid.8 -
Just because you can do things in one line and throw in ternary operators everywhere, doesn't mean you should.. other people will touch your code. Make it readable instead of making it harder to maintain8
-
Fact, that I am making websites does NOT mean, that I will make a website for you for free. Why it is so hard for people to understand?2
-
People that say they want things ASAP. But really mean "no rush, whenever you get to it". Can go fuck themselves.3
-
When you realize you had sharpening enabled in your monitor settings and you turn it off and shit just looks so much better...
I mean this is a necessary setting when using VGA but this monitor is connected via DVI!
Also some people just do not seem to notice this and leave this enabled on their screens.4 -
Just me getting angry about the reaction after the Cambridge-scandal?
The news are spamming it every hour, and suddenly everyone is "well aware about my privacy" and deleting their Facebooks.
I mean, as if we didn't know this all along. O-fucking-course your data is stored and sold for adds, you accepted it when you wanted to "see which celebrity you are alike"!
I walk around and talk about privacy with people kinda a lot, and nobody seems to care. And then this happens, and people are going nuts. Waow, what a surprise!
Haha, have a nice evening DevRanters! ;) (20:55)@swe15 -
First off, what do you mean by ´people like me´?
Do I look like an outer-space creature to you when you look at my profile? Or are you looking for a do-not-feed sign at the side of my wooden fence?
What even, .. I'm human, like you, you moron with a missing 'sapien'.
It's kinda ironic, as you can't even abide the maximum length your message has, which you speak of. Therefore I reckon you lost the second 'sapien' too.
Yes, now you may call me "people", and yourself... well you're mute. You monkey.
Just rambling. /ignored6 -
What I say: I'm a computer science major.
What people hear: I can resolve any tech issue you have or will ever have on any machine that exists in this universe. I am jacked into the Matrix at all times. I am the IT god. Look upon me and despair.
What I mean: Sometimes I try to tell the computer to do something and I cry when it doesn't work.1 -
Why is it that a lot of developers don't have the most basic of Windows knowledge? For example, a lot of people complaining about Windows Update. I mean, it's just a setting you can configure and a service you can stop and turn off..
It all sounds ironic.8 -
Yeah, hiring people solely to write unit tests is a completely reasonable thing to do, i mean, its not like unit tests are a perfectly repetitive task that could easily be automated or anything...5
-
I swear I hate seeing these wannabe programmers sharing their shit content on social media. I mean, I respect people who are getting into programming and giving it their best. But one just doesn't write "Fuck Types" when talking about a Dart. I mean, atleast open the introduction page of that language before you jump and start giving people "pro tips". Stop skimming over technologies/languages and dive a bit deep to understand how it works.9
-
People rant here about how they hate documenting things or writing tests or whatever.
Yes these things are not the most interesting but I have a feeling that we are forgetting about most horrendous of tasks - estimating. Especially in agencies. Especially related to altering legacy features. Especially big projects.
I mean, I'm spending time doing something that is basically dev's Voo Doo, hoping that I will be right... and usually I'm not.6 -
My manager announced in today's team meeting that I got promoted and going to work in another department next month and no one said anything and I'm so fucking triggered. I just can't help it, I worked with most of these people for a long time, I know their best wishes mean nothing but come on, how fucking salty can you be, and why do I care so much lol.8
-
Point out everyone else's bullshit. Some people will tell you you are mean or you lack soft skills or that they can no longer work with you and you should go to see a therapist, but oh well, you are an engineer not their mom. You are just being rational.5
-
When people says you are good in programming they mean you will clear the exam easily.
But they don't know there is a art of writing code.
And if you stuck in the code then there is a art of debugging the code.
Who knows the both is a good programmer.2 -
You know. I think people trashing chatgpt detracts from the fact that if it is actually functioning as stated it's still a goddamm miracle of science!
I mean are we all really that jaded ?
You can type a plain English request in and a COMPUTER PROGRAM sends you a Novel response that may reflect the bias of its dataset and the bias of people trying to keep "secrets" but otherwise it sends a response formulated from extensive data.
That's a breakthrough
Quick acting like an alpha that was frozen years ago apparently is the RTM!28 -
Fuck these people. They have PhDs in everything but don't know how to walk properly.
"Oh let me get right in front of you while you walk faster", have you ever driven a car you porg shit?
And these people that wear backpacks! OH MY GOD I HATE BACKPACKS! I mean, if you wear one please tell me you've been wearing them since you were born. Otherwise you're not calculating the extra space you take AND YOU JUST WALK LIKE A FUCKING GORILLA.
I have come to the point of inventing the walking permit. You're born with it, and starting at 18 y/o it can be stripped away. LEARN TO WALK.2 -
Fucking people, why the hell are you reading into things instead of asking for clarification if something is unclear?
So much time, sweat and tears wasted on miscommunication.
When I said, "there might be a problem in the way component X method Y was implemented", i didnt mean go refactor the entire code of the component. Why waste 2 days of work on unnecessary refactor that nobody wanted and breaks changes + the bug is not fully fixed 😤13 -
People hate Amazon, people like to hate on Amazon.
But people also keep buying from Amazon
This morning I took an amazon return package to DHL and literally at 17:00 this day (the same day!) I got the refund to my bank account
What the fuck. I mean yeah I hate amazon as much as the next guy. But that's literally why people are buying from amazon. You can't just say "amazon bad" and then not also appreciate when they are doing something good12 -
Many people / engineers around me talk about trendy stuff like Cybersecurity or AI and show off what great encryption and neuronal networks they 'have built' ( I would rather say 'using').
I kinda get the feeling of 'Everbody talks about it - no one really knows what's goin' on inside (especially those guys who hate math and even algorithms).'
Am I just stupid or does somebody else here feel the same way? I mean people have been doing serious research about this stuff for years. And currently many kids are coming up with it as if it is easy stuff like the bubble sort.4 -
Why is it so fucking hard for people to follow basic rules? FFS you're supposed to stay at home to limit contact between people, that doesn't mean you can play volleyball with your friends or go to the local park! And if you decide to go hiking, choose a place where you'll be alone, not the most popular trails around the city! You're the fucking reason government needs to make new quarantine regulations every day, not this virus, and you deserve no help if you catch it! Fuck you!17

Just heard this on the news...
"The cyber security on my smart phone compared to the cyber security in medical equipment..."
Wtf did I just hear??? I mean, I get it...using terms the general public understands... But how about educating people instead. 😤1 -
Why are such many people afraid of dying instead being happy for being still alive?
I mean - if you die, it happens within some seconds ... done.
But on the other side, every other minute of your life, you just don't die.
So dying is statistically negligible.18 -
I wonder sometimes whether people in Silicon Valley know how the rest of the world thinks about and acts on technology. I mean, I know they do to a degree, but is there anyone else besides me that thinks it’s kind of an “ivory tower” existence over there, with people chasing the latest shiny thing regardless of if people want or need it?20

Devrant guidelines update:
1. Just because you can post something doesn't mean you should.
2. Everyone should be treated fairly and with respect.
3. We should be looking for positives in people and rewarding those.
4. Share your rants in a non-polarizing way to help bring the community together.
5. Don't post anything about the word made from the first letter of the first four guidelines.66 -
How comes that people can write such fucking shitty code?
Because I mean, why the hell would I want a progress indicator while the form is loading?
Actually, let's just not disable the form while it's loading. Let the user get mad when it's data's overwritten.
And best of all. Let's use inconsistent naming and fucking metadata tables so that we don't have any structure and make queries slow.
Yes. I fucking love incompetent consultants. Fucking love them. Good thing he never got hired...2 -
People who assign vague tasks to you, without any context or anything remotely resembling a brief, for a project you know almost nothing about. And then expect you to be able to magically work out what they're actually wanting. Whilst demanding ridiculous turnaround times. I mean, are you fucking serious?1
-
Hey dear HR people and Headhunters - learn to write proper Joboffers - when someone is a JavaScript developer and even writes JavaScript for 10 years for a living doesnt mean he can or wants to write strict typed TypeScript out of the box using an library ecosystem and NOT a framework already written with TypeScript (React vs Angular)
Write TypeScript developers in the job offers when you search them: TypeScript !== JavaScript.6 -
There's a group of people at my work who have mean girls syndrome.
They think they're cool, but they're actually pretty lame. I'm loving it whenever a junior comes to me because they're fed up with these morons.
Don't get me wrong, I can't do fuckall, but I love to sit and watch the world burn. Hell, I'm waiting for end of contract to get away from this hellhole of a job, this shitty small town and its close-minded people.11 -
Hey lads and gals!
A genuine question to people who live in "heaven-on-earth" countries (Greece islands, Italy, Spain seaside, Portugal, etc.). Where do YOU travel to to chill, change scenery and relax?
I mean, for us, wildlings of the North, going South on vacation is a no-brainer. Like now, I'm getting my sanity back while sipping Rakia (IDK why not ouzo though..) in Crete. But where do Cret(ians?) and other Southerners go on vacation?6 -
Why you would sell your company to Microsoft too!
1. Your company is so succesful, the valuation is so high, only a handful of companies could buy it.
2. Running a company takes a shit load of energy, and most normal people hope to relax at one point in their life.
3. People at the head of major international companies are not normal humans. They like do over work and they have one goal. Be number 1.
So good successful people sell to evil and more succesful people.
And when i say evil, i really just mean that being number 1 is more important than ethics.
Edit: spelling.7 -
I really don't get why people get offended by things like the little Santa's hat at the setting options in VSCode, I mean this kind of thing should be not relevant in this type of context, they just try to give a little reminder about the current holidays.
Anyway all believes are respectful, but at this rate, everything we do will be offensive.

Today in programming class.
FizzBuzz on a sheet of paper. I mean, of course I aced the one thing I do in every language I learn. :)
Our teacher then proceeded to talk about the fact that some people, even having studied Computer Science, were unable to make a FizzBuzz program.

What's everyone's opinion when it comes to designing modern and/or minimalistic interfaces when using blur or gradients?
I see a lot of people who are hating blur used in UI elements and a lot of people praise the 'death' of gradients, what's everyone else think of these.
I personally love using blur in UI's and do like gradients if done correctly (not 2 colour gradients)
EDIT: I mean what's your opinion on blur and gradients not which one is better :-P12 -
I really don't get the frustration people have with debugging...
It's one of the most fun parts of programming for me.
I don't mean the missing semicolon (I use an ide cause I care about my time).
When all your seniors have spent hours on trying to find a bug and after a few days you're able to present a fix to them, that honestly is the best feeling, potentially better than "finishing" a product (let's be honest, it's never finished)1 -
One of my favorite things to do in Secondary School was to go around telling people I had written a program that uses the 'Doomsday Algorithm' which sounded really cool and always scared those who didn't understand it.
Truth is, the 'Doomsday Algorithm' is just an Algorithm that used to determine the Day of the Week of a given date.
I wrote this when I was 13/14 years old and I'm still super proud of it today.... well I mean I probably would be if I could read my own code.1 -
One of the biggest challenges for me learning to program is my memory.
Some people can pick up concepts easily and have a field day. I have to keep practicing until I memorize it properly, and even then I have the tendency to struggle.
Does this mean I give up? Helllll no. I'm far from giving up with all the progress I've made.4 -
$a = 1;
$b = 2;
echo ($a < $b) ? ($a > $b) ? 'This is totally fine' : ($a < $b) ? 'This is not ok!' : 'Perfect' : 'No problem here';
Why do people do this?!
(And I mean nested ternary ifs, not coding in PHP :P)16 -
Just css'd the shit outta this Web app... by css I mean aggressively copied people on codepen til I patched together my idea of design
-
I've been laughed at a lot for thinking this way, but I'm honestly frustrated by how little information exists on the web for people who want to take Operating System development a step further. I mean, the OSDev Community is amazing and offers pretty, much everything one needs to know at the system level. But my issue is: What if someone didn't want to use existing compilers and assemblers like GCC and NASM, and do everything from total scratch? I mean, the original Unix came from somewhere, right? I know you're going to think "Why not? It works.". Well, I just think it's crazy how few people (such as Linus and the GNU foundation) are out there that have the ability to create such things without help from existing software tools. Sure, it could take me decades of careful practice and experience, but my passion is for creating software at this level and becoming one of those people is very strong. I just wish I knew where to begin and who to learn from.4

Wow, Oracle is tenacious... Does this kind of decision mean people will move away from Java?
Oracle vs Google/Android

Why people think that Mac is better than pc? Im Mac user and I like Mac. I think Apple just uses better hardware and charges extra for it. If you build windows with better hardware then windows will work really fast too. On Mac gradle build takes really less time because of SSD it does not mean Mac is faster. Get SSD for windows and see the difference yourself.
- P.S. Not hater of any OS.6 -
I'd like to share with you guys the fact that I had one of the greatest Christmases ever!
This includes having randomly received this debugging duck from someone that had no idea what it would mean to me, but also meeting people who brought 4 dogs to the family reunion (I am absolutely in love with dogs)1 -
People say they don't remember 10 years back.
Sh*t, I don't even remember this code. I mean, I wrote it like yesterday3 -
Be a MEAN stack developer not just a mean developer.
Unfortunately, I have met few developers who just like to demean other people who know less or are less experienced.8 -
Why people are saying Python is an easy language? I mean yes, if you write c/java code with python it may seem easy, but writing proper python code, in a pythonic way is not so easy.
SO DON'T TELL PEOPLE THAT'S IT EASY LANGUAGE because new commers later they come with absurd code and ask people to fix it.7 -
Im learning Advanced Computing in a institute. Prior to that I have done many projects with Unity 3D, MEAN and C#. But guy who is teaching is very rude every time to the class. 'you people are stupid' 'you cant do anything on your own' 'that's why your here'. And Im self tought programer so Im getting really angry at such comments. How to deal with this?? 😥😫4
-
The worst people are the ones who play it off like they know what they are doing. You read a few things online cool. That don't mean you need to set up a mission critical server. Why would you take 2 ssds put them in raid 1 then partition it for c, e, and d drive then set a backup to image c partition to d?2
-
I honestly don't understand people who genuinely believe formal schooling will cover all the basics they need to know to do a real-life job, and still get barely passing grades on all relevant subjects.
I genuinely don't understand people who copy GitHub projects to pass classes, and graduate from a university with goddamn StackOverflow instead of a brain.
Whom I understand even less are people who don't do anything major-related on their spare time.
I mean, change your fucking major, do what you actually like, do things that actually light your nuts with passion.
Please don't waste my time pretending you are in it not just because it's potentially well-paid and "cool".
Please don't waste my time being my coworker.
Yes, I'm looking at you, trendy wanker with a CS degree and no personal projects.
P.S. Junior here. Yes, I'm full of hatred for all the "real programmers" in the industry out there. I hoped for a better experience.
P.S.S. I mean absolutely no offense to people using either GitHub or StackOverflow outside of the aforementioned context.10 -
I sometimes feel like some people's comments on devrant are enough for a mental health crisis diagnosis. I wonder, how can we diagnose people through text? And can, let's say, ML do any better.
I mean; let's say for example abusive behaviors. This may be an online community but that doesn't stop some from abusing others, right? But the only form of communication here is text, right? What if you could diagnose... Not even that. What if you could inform a mental health expert about a toxic behavior online? We do have a lot of "internet policing" but we have no "internet mental health help" for toxic behaviors and attempts to mitigate that. I don't mean banning people. I mean literally in simplest form tag a psychotherapist in the convo.
Just thinking. :)13 -
One thing that really bothers me is that people use use megabyte to mean mebibyte. What makes it even worse is that Windows does it too. It says it shows gigabyte but actually shows gibibyte.
Now imagined my frustration when I saw this D:13 -
Some people just don't get it. When you meet friends who are either non technical or very new to programming, all they ask you is what language do you use.
The language is important but not everything. It's what you do with it that matters. Just because you know python, doesn't mean that you can do machine learning. Even simply asking what do I do is better than that!
The language is just a tool! Learn to be language agnostic please. Be a programmer, not a code monkey2 -
ive never made a friend due to my code.
maybe you mean the output of it?
ive had a couple websites and apps and shit like that where people called it 'cool' and stuff, but i don't want friends who view me as the "nerd"1 -
You know the truth will upset people.
I mean I'm trying to answer React, Typescript, mobX, Node.js related questions on stackoverflow, 1Q/day.1 -
Wait, you mean to tell me, here I am with imposter syndrome, and some people can't even write a test for is-odd? Like people who are *less* competent than that are actually passing interviews?6

Sometimes i wonder how many people from here work in the same company, talk every day, and don't have a clue about it...
I mean... last person here you told to suck di** here can be your boss actually...6 -
Got rejected from a really nice opportunity today. Irrelevant experience as it seems to the company.
As it turns out I'm an unlucky beginner in the industry who's stuck with a wrong, legacy code project. Doesn't mean I don't know anything and I can't learn new stuff. They were not judging capabilities, just judging people by the project they're working on in their current firm.1 -
-Interviewer: "do you have any problems in working after 19.30?"
-Me: "what do you mean? if something's wrong and it's my fault, l'll do my best to ..."
-Interviewer: "well, we have people here that works usually after 19.30, so if you have any problems in doing this, better to know now."
(uhm... the job was from 9AM to ... WTF PM?!)11 -
I don't know why some people hate PHP, I mean maybe there are some stuff that may annoy you but personally I think it's cool language.5

"web developers are a dime a dozen"
No, people that know HTML are a dime a dozen. It's true that web developers are becoming common in CS, I mean everything is web based now and there's a low barrier of entry. But web devs still get paid well when they know what they're doing, and that means that demand hasn't plummeted like everyone suggests.7 -
Jeez I am so bored of this shit life, people are fucking rude and mean. I am wasting so much time waiting for people or things to happens, I spend my free time trying to solve shitty problems and waiting for updates to end.2
-
What's up with the meetings and schedules? If you involve 9 people for a 3 hour meeting, you're wasting 27 freaking hours and no it's not what standups mean. Startups! ugh2

Im getting a feeling that the more we try to replace humans with computers and machines, the worse the remaining humans get to interact with. And I dont mean that in a way that computers are better to interact with but in the sense that people tend to forget how to properly work with each other.8
-
I don't get why the most devs are so into defending they're favorite programming language. I mean choose the language that gets the job done and not what's your favorite if language b sucks at doing a then I chose another one. So simple but most people don't get it. It's like the pc VS console discussion. Just play both period1
-
If it hasn't a README, its not opensource! Just because you put it on Github doesn't mean people can use it...5

Are people using Vim doing it for the sake of it? Is there such a thing as a Vim hipster?

How to manage when you start something good for you, start taking decisions for your good and people start spreading hate about you. It obviously will effects your mental health right?
How you guys manage it? I mean how?
Today I'm feeling of getting bullied and getting bullied again from the same person. I'm correct but can't show the correctness just because there's no proof I've in-hand.
I'm literally tired of people now!4 -
Sometimes it's a challenge to show how much work I've accomplished to a non-techie (<- any good nicknames for such people?).
I mean yes it looks like it's pretty simple but there were like ~5000 new lines of code and 2 weeks of work put into getting this thing working perfectly, looking sexy, and moving efficiently all while making sure it protects our infra from idiots like you!2 -
I hate UpWork and Freelancer.com fees and policies about the privacy (or lack) for your projects. But I grudgingly admit they offer protections against fraud. If you're a freelancer, or if you employ freelancers, and do so without the fraud protections of these types of services, how do you guard against being taken advantage of by clients or freelancers? I mean, anyone can write and sign contracts but in the end they're just paper promises not worth anything if the people you're working with or for are "dogs on the Internet" who can simply disappear.2
-
Am I the only one who doesn't really see feel or need as an insult? Geek means someone who "messed around" with tech and need is someone who is smart. Why do people get offended by it? I mean, I get that people mean it offensively but is it really something to get that upset about? If someone was to call me a geek or need. Imma walk with my head high and own it.9
-
There are two kinds op people. People who like to help because they feel sorry for you, and people who want to help to proof themselves.
The second one is annoying as fuck. Even though i asked for help, it doesn’t mean you are better in it then me.
You should listen to what i have to say. Stuck up anti social asshole.7 -
today is the day i will write a bunch of passive agressive redmine tasks with fucking steps to reproduce the fucking bugs and fucking info on the fucking environment of the fucking bug! i mean you have the time and skills to attach bunch nonsence screenshots with color coded arrows and circles, carefully cropping out info i could actually use, like the fucking url and browser, but you cannot consolidate your thoughts well enough to write down the steps that led to a bug??? fuck these people3

is it just me or are others also noticing that our society is getting similar to the one seen in Idiocracy [the movie]?
I mean... I'd understand one or two dumb things: people do it, realize how stupid it is and move on. But now it's more like the other way around: people do something smart, realize it, undo it and move on.
Has anyone else seen Idiocracy?20 -
So what's up with HR people pushing people to stop using terms like master/slave and blacklist/whitelist because it's offensive to people? I mean this is simply censorship out of context. It's not blatantly hating on someone.
Did they did even ask concerned people their opinion? Is this really gonna help professional inclusion? Censoring terms will not solve issues if you cannot talk about it in an honest manner.
Fuck sake some HR people are paid for doing bullshit.7 -
Why the hell people add me on LinkedIn for like no reason? Why do people do that?
I mean, "John Doe wants to connect". Ok, let's see, maybe I know him... "John Doe, Chemical Engineer living in Argentina"
WTH man? I don't know you, I don't work with chemicals, I don't live near Argentina, and we do not have anyone in common!
Unless you're a recruiter; if I don't know you and you don't specify why you wanna connect with me, I'll ignore your request.1 -
Ive been thinking for a few now that if like to begin a social program to get old people to play computer games.
They are often bored as fuck, cant move much and have no mental challenges.
I mean what else than video games could save the day?
Old homes with puzzles and missing pieces. Dementia neighbours. Ots a no brainer!2 -
I visited my college school today and my friends from lower years are still afraid of coding , i mean coding doesnt bite it just take time to understand , i think people want the easy way of understanding things rather than building up from nothing, thats why i love to code because i can literally make something out of nothing.4

Recently I see people installing Linux distros to their Macbooks. Is MacOS that bad? I mean I use Ubuntu in my daily life but let's accept that most of the Linux distros (for desktop of course) has hickups. I haven't used MacOS but there is a big company maintaining and optimizing it for just few machines. What is the point installing a Linux distro to a Mac?6

Judging by the amount of bitcoin recovery ad spam here on devrant, there must be a huge amount of people somehow losing their bitcoins on a daily basis.
Thank god those altruistic scammers… *ahem* I mean hackers of course… are there to help.7 -
How was your day?
Mine wasn't bad. Seems like the project I am working on gets on track, I mean my team (squad) is able to do good things, I really like all the people I have on board. We all are in the same miserable but sometimes funny world.
Shit happens all the time, but at least there are other people we can share the shit with. -
Being asked to produce a graph for metrics a, b and c and then being invited to the two hour "a, b and c" meeting to explain what they mean to the people that asked me to graph them. That's rapidly becoming my "job description"...

So in Chrome, "resume browsing" doesn't actually mean resume browsing, it means "take a shit in the top right corner of my screen and kick it about a bit".
Must be satisfying to create a feature and know that 10 million people open it by accident every day and swear at it.3 -
So people always complain about how people ask bad questions on StackOverflow, but it seems people on SO are also unable to properly read the question.
I literally stated in my question that I've tried using android's v7 SearchView and first thing someone answers is use the v7 SearchView, I mean c'mon, RTFQ4 -
On today's episode of... The shit people will try to pull off to get you work longer hours.
Guilt tripping.
I mean, seriously? That one can be smelled from miles away and it is obviously a clear red flag that you're a manipulative person.
Why would you even try it? Have some respect for yourself.3 -
Am I the only one who's slightly triggered when I ask a question, get no upvote, and when someone answers, he gets 2 or 3 votes and people commenting like "yeah I'd do the same"?
I mean, it's like being the father who'se wife is being congratulated for being pregnant, she wouldn't be if I didn't do my job 😎3 -
I was thinking about switching to Dvorak but then I learned that there are no significant study that it really does improve typing speeds. I don't feel like switching for something with so little gain and I return people will look at me like i'm hermit hipster. I mean they're doing that already. I don't have friends. Pls send help4

What things do people around you keep repeating related to programming?
For me it is surely "linux is soooo permissive", which is true but still funny when people start saying it unrelated and simply as a mean to jokingly explain why something doesn't work how is supposed to. Even if the problem is not even on a computer4 -
Where did we get lost in the war against fuel guzzling cars and pollution to where now people are just paid to drive around endlessly who don’t even enjoy driving around ? Where did all these efforts go ?
I blame all levels of industry for making a good paying job mean no family no exercise no public transportation no sleep no travel13 -
I made this site which is nice. Its a nice project plus I made this for my own. So I decided to book a domain for it.
Turns out every possible name is booked and it started pissing me off. I mean how positive people are for startups.
They made this a real-state business. Saw land acquire it. You never know which one will be next facebook ha!
Then I hit git.com which was parked too. I thought god bless you and your money.2 -
can we agree that T is a dumb variable name?
I mean I totally know what it means in that instance, but why do people keep writing math stuff like they'd skribble it on paper?8 -
someone i know well saw that i rolled a couple linux 3ds kernels at one point and said he'd fucking pay me if I made a distro rolled from totally-uncompiled code and a raw kernel and isn't based on any other distro
is this really something people want? i mean fuck I can prolly fill that niche if need be but is that really something there's a demand for???4 -
The worst part about working for a big company is that whatever is the problem that you google the solution is always like "try changing this global parameter that only the CEO has the privileges to change" or "the only solution is to raze to the ground your 1 year old technology and use this state-of-the-art edge solution".
And it looks like I'm the only one that complains about this.
I mean, really do people have no constraints when they work?1 -
What if I tell you I know front-end developers asking me if a parameter in a jQuery function should be in quotes or not...I mean...c'mon, people, are you fucking serious?1

I'm always wondering what was there in people minds when Cmake build system was invented.. I mean, I know drugs were super strong in the '80s, but this is ridiculous..20

I mean. People love Docker and Kubernetes? Really? I mean, I agree it's good. I'm just wishing if people demanded for better and simple software and not complicated stuff. Idk10

I hate how some people cannot write coherent fucking sentences in an email. I wish I can vote them off to relearn English. When you're describing a fucking issue, you cannot use words like criss cross. WTF does that even mean?!!5

Sorry, but no sorry.
I don't see that it is ok to make stupid of other people. I mean, it is ok for non-IT people/non-specialist/students didn't know that HTML programmer is not a thing or we can't just turn of the problem/bugs if sth gone wrong.
They aren't stupid. They just misinformed. Just smile (or laugh?) and explain to them.
No one is born knowledgeable of everything. We even learn how to walk, how to read, how to program.
By doing mistakes.3 -
Dear Microsoft: I don't care if Edge or any other of your in-house developed software is faster than the alternatives, it's about quality not speed.
If you design quality products people will use them, just because they are "faster" doesn't mean shit.5 -
Gnome, you are a piece of shit. It has taken 4 people over 3 hours to create a .desktop file to launch a fucking bash script due to varying levels of inexperience.
Die in a fire you flaming putrescent turd.
What the fuck does putrescent even mean?5 -
someone offered me a job a few days ago, and he said that for that job I'll have to learn something and send him a small project just so he'll know I've learned it... so I did, and now he doesn't answer to me... I want to fucking sue him for wasting me so much time1
-
I think it will be hard for Facebook to recover from this.
It seems like most people can tell that it is toxic.
Of course, a heroin addict would tell you they know heroin is bad, that doesn’t mean they are gonna stop using.
So FB isn’t going anywhere (they already have their needle in a lot of veins), but I’m not sure that even the addicts will see them the same way again.5 -
I started my career at a company that ran boot camps 24/7. I learned a lot but they did some shady shit. The company changed their name often so they couldn't be tracked and posed as a regular subcontracting agency and gave trainees fake backgrounds with an extensive resumes so people could get hired. I mean how else would Joe out of college with no experience get a job requiring 5 years minimum.3
-
People who speak in puzzles during code reviews - fuck you! Just say what you want to say without being philosophical about it. Want me to change the name of a function? Let me know, instead of ranting on about some other shit. I should not have to ask you twice for every god damn comment what you mean, you prick. It’s just annoying and a waste of time.4
-
So i am interning at this startup which has been selected at tech stars so the founder and a couple of guys have gone to berlin while i stay in india due to college. Now the founder messages me at midnight asking me to complete a feature which needs atleast a days planning and execution. I mean don't people have the slightest of regard for a persons personal life. Like wtf. Was trying to sleep.
-
I feel a little bit lonely when reading all the rants about Windows 😞 Are there more people like me who really can't work with macs but love Windows pc's? I mean, they are fast too, and customizable, and fancy, and work almost always.16

I'm almost at the end of my CS degree and I was wondering what it'll be like on the market: do companies want people who know like 10 different languages or are they more focused on actual experience?
I mean in the end a language can be learned fast, imho.3 -
Why do people get an idea that Ctrl+Alt+[character] is a good combination for keyboard shortcuts? Just because your keyboard layout doesn't have a special character for Ctrl+Alt+Z, it doesn't mean other people don't! Did you ever stop to think that more than half buttons on your keyboard already have a Ctrl+Alt (~AltGr) binding, so maybe, just fucking maybe, other keyboard layouts could have that kind of bindings for other buttons as well? You've got 38 published works, you boast your years of experience, yet you can't fucking consider some basic real-world problems when working on a piece of software!
God I fucking hate people like these, with their PhDs and no actual hands-on experience, they're always so smug about their work and expect you to pay them millions, but fail to understand that details like those are why people pick you instead of some cheap student, and that's where their salary comes from.7 -
Ugh there's little to no labor laws for developers.
Sometimes they don't even list software development as an industry.
We don't really analyze business finances, but we create tools that help real analysts to gather data and visualize economic trends. We don't really teach kids, but we create tools for schools. We're not in retail, but our cusomters are.
"Oh I know! You're an **electrician**. I'll put you next to the people who install air conditioning."
"How about... storage services?" I say "we storage our customer's data. At least that is accurate."
"Oh yeah like wholesale!"
"I recommend you write down telecomuncations." I mean, we do use HTTP if that's what you mean, but would you call a restaurant to be in the telecommunications industry just because they have social media accounts?3 -
Why is it so hard to explain to people that
The speed of time = 60 minutes / hour
I mean, I didn't come up with this shit!!! Come on
Also, in other annoyances of today:
VS code updated and ended with a crash, even tho it now says it's actually updated... Should I trust this bitch or not?!?! -
I have this irrational cringe every time that people say infinite when they actually mean unlimited. I hear and read it everywhere, multiple times per day. In English and in German.
"You can do this infinitely often"
"AI bots have infinite APM"
"The number of items you can store is infinite"
Aaaaargh! Stop it! It hurts! 😫22 -
Never, ever, ever stop learning. And I don't mean sitting in a classroom overpaying for outdated information. Read blogs, news sites, community driven content. Find that thing that only a handful of people are talking about and learn it. Then do that again, and again. The second you stop learning, you'll be left behind. Does that mean you'll be unemployed, or find it impossible to do find work, no, not immediately. But if you stand still looking enough to gather some dust, you'll soon be part of the dust.

If you ask any sane person "hey, do you want to get some disease with fever, headache and potential risk of dying?", I doubt anyone will say "yes".
But if there exist a way to prevent it with a proven efficacy from both evidence-based medicine and science, why not get it today? I'm not even talking about covid. Why people are not getting their flu shots? How's that logic works? You mean you don't want disease, but you also don't want to take any measures to prevent it?
Every time in late autumn people get cold. For a sane person, one such case with themselves is enough to say "hey, I don't want this to happen again the next autumn". Yet people do nothing.
I can't understand this.
And this is only a flu. Hepatitis will destroy your liver and potentially will destroy your whole life, so why avoid vaccination?8 -
I thought the issue was mostly with people in tech. But I now believe, tech people are mostly misled to believing woke bullshit, world is all nice and clean, and made of unicorns.
I mean all these does make them smart enough to run/code the machines, be obedient mofo, but dumb enough not to ask questions.
Toughen up you mofos, harden up. Build and sell your own bullshit, than working for someone else. And being comfy and then being on the way to your death bed.
Especially young people.... Take risks rather than risking it to tooo late you mofos. If you have a scratch, do it early, before you end up being a slob.....5 -
I hate moving parts in headphones... Why can't they atleast make them out of metal. I mean do you really need to make flimsy ass tech to make people buy more of it ? Well that gave me a good idea the headphone drivers and lads are still usable i might hook up a new headphones out metal !... Nah i will just buy a new one (god damn you companies and smart business policies you win again)1

It is ok to fail and commit mistakes, that's part of the game, specially for beginner devs. Just avoid failing alone, the most you can!
I mean:
- Ask people to review your code before pushing to the source repository.
- If you are not sure how to do, ask.
- Never work in production environments without supervision. Pair with someone.
- Have a desk mate for rubberducking (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...) and blame it in case you need -
A medical doctor gets fired for clearing a football player to play for not having an injury.
What does that do to the intellectual ecosystem?
These people go to college on full scholarships…to throw balls around?
I mean it sounds very silly when its put that way, but the initiation and training of a doctor is not a joke.
Why is this money being spent on football players?
I think operating tables should be televised, with announcers, and pundits, and star surgeons,
A person placing bets would need a working knowledge of the operating table if they are going to be placing bets.
We are smarter than this as people. Sports should not be just hulking drones throwing balls around.5 -
My dream project is to revamp education, be it through an app of some sort or by any other mean.
Can't justify spending a quarter of your life in a place you usually don't want to be, listening to stuff you can't relate, being taught by people who wasn't born to teach and being tested for things you will never use and couldn't care less.
Come on, there has to be a better way! And this goes beyond online courses.1 -
Don't have a cs degree, when I was in college I didn't know what I wanted to do, so I got an bachelor's in math figuring that would open a lot of doors. Did a boot camp after college to test the waters and found out i had a real passion for engineering. 2 years later I am teaching people with Masters in cs how to get shit done at my job. Morale of the story, your education in the theoretical doesn't mean shit when it's time to get practical work done.

I paint as a hobby and i think I'll go the github way and relabel the black colors as nightly 🤔 and whites as salt 😃 (!?).
Sorry, don't mean to be a racist, i practically didn't differentiate between people based untill i was told in school that we should not differentiate based on color or race 🤣. Everyone was just a human before those lessons.3 -
You come to me to seek help to clean your mess **YOU** did to someone and If I fix it, it's you who fixed it or else I'm your fallback guy, *claps*
You fucking moron, I was your fallback guy ever since we met, I treat you as a friend, ask to meet unconditionally and all you've ever done to me is to fix Windows installation. FUCK YOU MAN2 -
I get the feeling that the only reason people get macs is because windows is horrible now, I mean I’ve heard there’s better editing tools and all but surely they don’t give a huge advantage over editing tools for windows right?26

France qualified to the finals of the world cup and people are already losing it here. Yesterday I was invited to rackspace's offices in San Antonio.
Their people are so nice and they're full of great culture. That's truely a fanatical support those guys offer, also their IT security team is so reliable, they take their work really serious and I mean REALLY serious, I'd love to work at rackspace some day.
Best place ever.1 -
I hate the feeling when your supposedly crappy company starts feeling heavenly when people looking to join come from *even worse* companies. I mean, I start feeling "how in the actual hell are these companies even alive??!!"
It makes me wonder if I was just born in the wrong country or joined the wrong industry :/4 -
I hate people who own crypto and think they're some futurist tech elite. You don't know how the price will fluctuate in the future so stop thinking you're some goddamn fucking wizard. Just because you know the very basics of how a blockchain works or simple economics, doesn't mean you're better than those who don't own crypto.1

Really pissed of about FlutterDev reddit community, where you find people tath hate and dislike when you share video tutorials.
I mean, the rules allow for it, they dislike cause they are basic concepts, I mean they should understand that for people like me who has just started a Youtube channel this is one of the few ways that you have to share your content.4 -

Serious question:
Assuming we are (relative) computer pros: do we need an antivirus on Windows other than the built-in Windows Defender?
That is also assuming we're the only people using our computers.
I mean: we'd never click on ads (if we see them at all). We'd never click on links. We'd never install crapware.
Where are the risks we'd need a resource-hogging antivirus program for?9 -

I see a lot of people complain about uni degrees and stuff because they don't learn how to code etc. Is this really the standard?
I mean I'm only in fourth semester bachelor and had coding knowledge before starting uni. But we had basic to intermediate java in the first two semester, now learning how to write secure code and OS-Level stuff in C++, we had a module with practical Assembly coding all while still learning all the theory.
At the end of the first semester we had to write a terminal game in Java. I mean of course that's not "real experience" but if you dive in you definitely learn the basics you need to get started in real life.
Or am I wrong completely / just in a weird uni?6 -
Rant.
Why so many people complain about this lack of a 3.5mm jack? It's 2016 and we still have that fossil of a tech from the early 20th century. A digital device with an analog input... I mean, come on! It's for the future.10 -

someone asks me : What do people not tell you about being a software engineer?
So the thing is , No one actually knows what they’re talking about.
See, the thing about building software is that usually you are inventing something.
Not in a pretentious way. I don’t mean “inventing something” as in inventing the light bulb, but I mean making something new that someone else hasn’t built before (well, hopefully — if you’re building something someone else already built, then you might be doing it wrong).
Because of this, people are usually just coming up with solutions based on what they think will work.
And that’s about the best you can do. Sure, the more experience you have, the more you can recognize certain patterns, or lay certain architectural foundations, but you’re mostly just coming up with something new. Maybe not 100% new, maybe some sort of slightly different thing than another thing that exists, but it’s still new.
So yeah, no one knows what they’re talking about. You’ll sit in meetings, with people talking about all kinds of smart-sounding stuff. Most people are trying their best to understand and play catch-up. No one wants to be the dumb one. People try to make it a science as much as possible, but if you really wanna be honest, people are just trying stuff and seeing if it works.
It’s not a bad thing. That’s just the nature of software development.6 -

People need to stop taking things out of context, a simple AMQP consumer that sends and email does not need a fucking container... I may have said use a container in the past but that does not mean fucking use for a project which you've made into 20 files instead of 100 lines anyway...

I am quite worried about the approach users have towards technology...
I am starting now to work to my bachelor thesis research in algorithm, so I'm still very young.
But when I think about which mental process guides people when they use or try to fix their pcs is very worrying...
I mean I am no mechanical engineer but I don't pretend to know perfectly how an engine works. But I try anyway to understand it the best as I can...
Instead I see users that don't try to know at all our products... People (and not only elderly) which think that Facebook and Internet is the same thing, people that think that you can find anything one the net, while I found myself stuck many times in the middle of a research for something...
I had a course in human computer interaction... And I see the point of simplifying the user experience... But I fear that it will be soon to much :s3 -

So today I learnt that babel/runtime-corejs2 is a lib which makes babel more optimised by refactoring most of its function calls. So I need to import a library..... to gain more performance out of an existing library.... I mean, seriously, people joke about this, but does a new version of angular get released every week or something? How is anyone supposed to keep up? Let alone find the right version of the documentation to reference?

People who introduce unnecessary powers of 10 into calculations in the name of making things easier to understand, should be strung up by their testicles.
Like (1+r/100)^t for compound interest. Or saying the value of something is 1.5, when you might mean 1.5 or 150 or 0.015 depending on the context.
Idiots.
And then other people have to write code that moves decimal points around, and inevitably gets it wrong, and the stupidity gets passed around like a dose of the clap.
Just write down the actual fucking number. You're making it more confusing, not less, and pouring yet another bucket of shite onto the dunghill of human stupidity.
Unnecessary power of 10 => rope + testicles + tree.7 -
I don't get why people use light theme on their IDE/browser/etc.. I mean its painful to see.
I use dark mode on everything, even the Google main page with a custom CSS.
also I don't know why, as my experience, people with light theme tend to be smarter than we darksiders.
This rant will not end well.18 -
okay so i want some suggestions from you people, basically i am undergraduate, highly interested in web development as well as software development, i have created some web apps(i use MEAN stack). i want to become an open source contributor and i am not sure how to do that. People thinking their computer problem justifies them being rude.
I've literally been in the middle of a conversation and someone walks up and hands me their computer and says "can you fix this?". Just because you work 20 feet away from me does not mean I'm your personal IT help.4 -
We have a notorious question in one of our coding interviews, designed to weed out people who've slapped 'Postgres' on their CV (because that's what we're looking for) when what they really mean is "I've used MySQL a lot, and it's basically the same, right?". People get choked on that about 70% of the time.
If you put something technical on your CV, be prepared to be tested on it in a coding interview!1 -
Google Business continues to piss me off. Just because I don't have a physical storefront at which to receive clients for web development doesn't mean I'm not working in a legitimate business. The fact that there's STILL no option to hide my home address from searches for web developers nearby is just inexcusable. And it's not just me. There are TONS of at-home freelance workers who RELY on organic searches to stay afloat. But Google only cares about people who make decisions about how to run their businesses in the way Google finds beneficial.2

I've talked with my friend about what does that mean to work as QA. It seems all they do is watching yet vids with kittens and slacking off, and basically they are useless.
But then, it clicked. They are people to blame first if shipped product have bugs.

So let's do a "community building" exercise.
What was your biggest tech pet peeve?
I'll start:
I hate it when people (especially teachers) give us a printout with a link to a website (like a good docs link) without shorting it.
I mean, we have to type out that 100+ character string of random numbers and letters. Then you make a mistake and have to retype it. (I.k,. First world problems)
Let's here yours. It can be about employers, teachers, or anyone else you can think of.3 -
Don't you have when a job offer expects people to know certain specific libraries?
And I'm not talking about frameworks or something essential for a certain field (Like Web3js for blockchain).
I once lost a job opportunity because I didn't have experience working with a specific UI toolkit for Vue so I took longer doing certain things because I needed to check the docs...
I mean, I understand companies want people with experience but I feel it's stupid to expect us to know every single library for every use case imaginable from the beginning. Most of the time, it's stuff we can learn very quickly7 -
Why am I feeling that QA always have some attitude?
I observe this for quite sometime now that they can’t communicate! They are mean , sarcastic and passive aggressive. Couldn’t they just have explain the bug and why needed to be fixed.
Why there’s a need of condescending people? Couldn’t people just FUCKING COMMUNICATE?!11 -

I've been using Docker for almost two years now, I've to say it's a super powerful tool and allow easy environments deploys, but I keep questioning why people use Docker in production? Even in the place I work they do and they can't explain it very well
I mean, you are creating a container that hosts services in a computer that already have services running, being one of these services the Docker daemon, all this shit doesn't add a lot of overhead to the application?
I mean, it's not better to just install python in Ubuntu instead installing Docker in Ubuntu, run the Docker daemon, start a container with other services and now I run python?
Just saying6 -
The thought process that goes into developing software. I mean, the things that go through our minds as we try to write the code for the problem, and how we draw parallels from past experiences or similar things done in a different programming language. Some time ago in a telegram group a guy triggered me when he complained that "most students after the degree have no idea how to correctly implement the mean of a series of numbers".
Then he asked: "does anyone here know how to do it?"

Eventually I got it, but now...

In the spirit of this https://m.youtube.com/watch/... I have a question...how many of my fellow Rantsters can relate? But, I think a lot of people sell themselves short because they aren't a "professional" I'm pretty sure anyone who can build an application can fix most anything...you just need to read the docs and debug it!

Tl;dr any tips for new scrum team ? How to start with story points with people that dont know eachother?

A little rant about you guys...
Those devRanters that feel the need to put "repost" on every fucking post they come across, I have news for you... By putting "repost" you are intact fucking reposting.

So I thought I'd ask this in a different space. What do I have to do to ? Suck someones dick or something to get away from the chomos and their twisted whorelings ? Being around this is worse than being aware of how fucked up people can be.
Do I have to murder people ? I mean explain what I have to do to get away from you bastards.
Because I look shortly ahead and see theft of property once more and I'm trying to move on not see time end around a bunch of animatronic dummies who's unnatural appearance makes me act like a dummy and btw if your idea of 'good' is 'yeah turn a blind eye to us being robots and let us rape our kids in peace' fuck you people.2 -
I wonder when we'll stop the abuse of naming conventions like name & surname, by this I mean not all cultures have a surname but most of us are ignorant about it and those people when they are presented with an obligation to fulfill that field they cannot do it legally, because they'll lie.
A more open approach with only one field for full text identity would solve this issue.1 -
Hi Devrant, my little brother showed me this site (https://commits.facepunch.com/) which is the commits page for a game he plays.
Some users comment block element characters like █▅▌▊▋ ▉▇█▅▍_▍▄▉▆ he asked if i knew if that meant anything and I don't, but now i'm curious myself.
can anyone recognize the block characters and/or understand if they actually mean anything, as far as a I know they're just block elements people use to mess with others, but like a lot of people are posting them
anyone has an idea of a potential path i'd appreciate it, i'm really curious about whether this means anything or is just a troll
thank you for your time2 -
So...im having a lot of issues with people messing with my emotions because of how sensitive I am.
I lost a lot of confidence in myself a while back and grew sensitive. I don't know what to do and I don't understand why people have to be so mean :(
A girl today was laughing at me cause I couldn't figure out something in class and I feel useless.
Two guys have already messed with my emotions and led me on.
A lot of people don't hang out with me like before and no one wants to hang out with me. Another girl said I was clingy and annoying and I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I just want to be loved :((13 -
Dynamic/Dynamically is used WAY to much in programming. What part of programming is NOT dynamic?
https://dictionary.com/browse/...
Depending upon your interpretation of the definition it can just mean: moving parts. Programming is all about moving parts.
I see things like "dynamically allocated array". Wtf does that even mean? (I get it, most likely means on heap) Say it specifically: it was allocated on the stack or the heap.
Apparently some people are just more energetic in their programming...
It becoming a really overused buzzword...8 -
A friend of mine is working on a project with other people outside the company.
Today he told me that one of them is putting every ID of a API response by hand... I mean, instead of auto increment the f**** number, is doing it by hand... One by one. Wow. -
Just moved to a new phone, (Wileyfox Swift 2) and noticed that my settings (by which I mean the dark theme) weren't saved. While it's unlikely I'll be switching phones again in the near future, I think it's unlikely people would use different settings across devices, so could settings be automatically applied when signing in? @dfox

Whenever people ask about my phone;
Them: what kind of phone is that
Me: OnePlus 3
Them: oh do you mean the 4
Me: :| -
Finding your mechanical keyboard clicking satisfying doesn’t mean having a personality or a taste.
Finding your knuckles and ankles cracking satisfying does.
That’s it. That’s the difference between you and me. All that articles, all that open source, that was that personal touch that made people obsessed. That’s was the whole secret all along.3
