EDIT: devRant April Fools joke (2018)
-------------------------
Hey everyone! As some of you have already noticed, @trogus and I made a decision (based on the suggestion of some members of the community) to start transitioning all scores on the app to binary. We have started by making all user scores in our mobile apps and website (if you’re logged in) appear in binary. We think this makes the app more fun while remaining usable at the same time!
Please let us know what you think and happy binary-reading!87 -
Introducing avatar pets & a new way to unlock avatar items! Pets include cats, dogs, birds and tigers. We know getting all those ++'s can take some time, so while all avatar items are just as reachable for free by earning ++'s from rants and comments, we now allow items to be purchased in-app based on the difference in ++'s you have to the ++ unlock value of the item. (To purchase, you'll need the latest app version)
Paying for avatar items helps us keep the devRant servers up and running and also is extra motivation to add more fun avatar items. If you have any questions or find a bug, please let me or @dfox know. Happy ranting!38 -
Hey everyone - tonight we performed a database upgrade and unfortunately there were a few "surprise" breaking changes to the query language we use that weren't caught during testing. Once they were discovered after the upgrade. The queries were corrected within a few minutes. You might have noticed some issues with commenting, voting, etc.
On this note, please let me know if you notice anything suspicious like errors when trying to perform normal actions, or anything at all. I appreciate any reports since it's a bit tricky for us to cover every last part of the app alone, though I think we went through most of it. Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions!21 -
So I have been temporarily assigned to new team .. moving from mainly backend.. to help the Web team ..
Me .: Aight guys .. what we working with ?
Team: MVC .net
Me: awesome ..
Team: but we have our own version of MVC .
Me : 🤔 your own MVC ?
Team: yeh we only buse controllers.. but no models at all ?
Me.: 😲 So where does the view gets its data from ?
Team : from Azure functions apps.
M: how ?
T: ( in very proud tone ) .. we use js to call all functions.
M: so why not just use HTML pages . Why MVC then !
T: coz MVC is modern architecture design.
M: but you not using it and all of calles to the functions are exposed publicly.
T: 🧐 THIS IS MODERN DESIGN !!
M: 🤪 My bad .. what the hell do I know ! I only been developing MVC applications for 7 years !!
Please tell me more about your " Modern Design "

Got a great boss!!;
Me: Hey, do we have a corporate GitHub account?
Boss: *excitedly* do we need it? We'll get it!
Me: uhh, yeah, we need it 😉
Don't care he doesn't know what it is, got his trust to get all the right tools!11 -
Senior: Why did you refactor those ten files?
Junior: There was a method copy-pasted in every one of them, so I moved it to a utils class.
Senior: Don't you know we will have to test all of those changed classes again? Please, rollback!
Junior: ok.
... two days later ...
Senior: Why did you just copy-paste that method? Don't you know it's bad practice?10 -
We are pioneers.
We build software, an extremely complex concept that didn't exist just 70 years ago.
We learned to harness its complexity and bend it at our will. Just stop for a minute and think about what happens when you load a URL in your web browser. The whole process.
In all human history, nobody has ever been the protagonist in something so complex as software. Yet we know that all of this wouldn't exist without a community of developers, sharing code and knowledge over the same system that they have created.
_We are dwarves perched on the shoulders of our fellows_
That's why even if nobody understands our work, I still think this is the most beautiful job in the world.12 -
I can finally have the big white cat because we all know that whites are superi....
I mean thanks for 20k++, ill make sure to be twice as annoying as before.22 -
I don't even know if this should be a rant or a good thing, but here it goes:
my boss smokes (legal) weed in the office, under the AC, so the smoke goes up and it spreads all over the place => we all get a bit stoned8 -
*In teams meeting with client*
Manager: Yes we can do all of that and it will be actioned very quickly. We will make all of these feature requests top priority. We will set aside everything we are currently working on in order to get this done!
Dev: ...Are you writing any of this down?
Manager: I don't need to, I always remember everything!
Dev: Just so you are aware, I'm not writing anything down. You're going to need to create a ticket with requirements spelled out for each one of these promises you're making otherwise they won't get actioned by the team.
Manager: I know that!
Dev: ...
*Later that day*
Ticket Title: Action client feature requests TOP PRIORITY!!!
Ticket Description: *empty*
Dev: ...13 -
Yes yes yes ... We all know HTML is not a programming language. Can everybody please stop leaving that as a comment in every single damn rant in this app?!?!?!
Seriously, get over it... I wonder where you would all be of there was no HTML.

My second job. I've been hired as a research specialist, not a developer, but they found out I could code during the interview.
Boss: hey, so we have our main product line that shares the control panel for all the models, right?
Me: unh, yeah
B: well, we need to know how it works.
M: sorry?
B: yeah, I mean, we should have a manual with all the tech documentation so we know how everything works
M: ...and didn't you handle the tech docs to the developers?
B: uh...no, actually we requests feature to the devs (note: external company) with a phone call, or email...now we need the specs.
Me: omg
...
The other company (which is part of the same group) handles me the source code.
It is a huge, 25k lines of spaghetti written by at least 7 people, one at a time, uncommented.
After a month I produce a 50page doc with how everything works, after actually compiling my resignation letter 3 times.
M: boss, here the docs
B: fine, I'll take a look
15 mins later
B: this is not what we need! You cannot describe those algorithm like this!
( I described the algorithms with their block flow, with a punctual verbal description)
M: umh.. So how do you need it?
B: we need an excel table, with all the entering conditions on the rows and all the exit conditions in columns, and the description of the condition of work in the crossing cells!
M: are you even serious?7 -
Please don't put this on your resume and definitely don't list a language at 50% just because you used it once for a project.
We both know you're over exaggerating and all you'll do is waste my time.13 -
I'm getting so pissed off by this client, here's the gist
We signed agreement defining the following deliverables:
- news page and news article page
- releases page and release info page
(it's a guy from a record label)
After the signature we (me and my colleagues) went to work and finished all that (+ a little more actually, yea I know never overstep your agreement right but we did) and we got paid (all good)
Now after payment he's asking us to do more (some kind of mail installation thing), so I obviously tell him, as I actually have many times before, that our agreement only stretched as far as those 4 deliverables and we wouldn't work without a new agreement defining a new set of requirements or an hourly rate.
Next he goes and tells me the following
==
We already have an agreement. I'm not paying you on an hourly rate as you are not next to me. Let me know
-- First off no we don't, the agreement only covered the 4 pages
== immediatly after
Also you really need to work on your costumer service. Your attitude is very rude. I don't know how many clients you have but all this distrust attitude is not in your favours. Let me know if you want to proceed?
-- Are you fucking kidding me? I am rude and distrustful? I JUST DO MY FUCKING JOB YOU PRICK
Sorry just need to let off some steam14 -
Manager: Why are we missing our deadlines?
Me: Cause we don't own any of the codebase that we work on and have to literally beg to other team for code reviews and deployments, for which it takes long mail chains and meetings. An even before that we(devs) have to explain to them what/why are we doing things, because our Product managers are a bunch of NoGood AHoles. And after all that we finally do some development, in whatever measly time we have left.
Manager: I know all that, tell me why are we missing our deadlines?5 -
I was talking in class. Teacher saw me. She asked me to explain the topic she was going to explain. It was Network Security. I started explaining how we can prevent tracking of our online activities by using VPN and all.
Teacher (to class): Do you all know about VPN?
Whole Class: No.
Teacher (to me): They don't know about VPN. Now, how will you explain?
Me: I won't.
*Cyanide out*7 -
Manager: As you all know I called this meeting to discuss what we will do with all of the extra resources if we are done early. I was thinking a start a new ap—
Dev: We are not going to be done early. There are two weeks left and we are way behind schedule.
Manager: Don’t be so pessimistic! You never know when or how fast tickets will be completed.
Dev: Yes I do…I’m the one doing them4 -
everyone in class was so silent when suddenly one guy pops up and says:
" 'TROJAN' VIRUS? I got it! you know? the trojan horse and shit?"
we all laughed
not because of him just realizing it now
but because we all slapped our faces at the same time, it was kinda funny. -
Apparently, part of being a software engineer means knowing how to read minds and do other people's jobs.
While implementing a user story for marketing, we found some associated features that, according to the database, have not been used for years. We tell them this. We do the courtesy of asking, "Hey, is there anything on the site that is utilizing these features? We'd like to clean up the DB."
"We don't know."
Engineering suggests, "Ok, lets turn the feature off, then, and see if anyone complains. It's been years according to the DB."
Marketing gets angry and hostile and says, "That's not the way to do things!"
I don't vocalize, "Well, not knowing how to do your own damned job is not the way to do things."
-
Marketing asks us to integrate a third party feature to the site. We ask, "Ok, what page do you want it on, and what information do you want to collect, and what should it look like?"
"I don't know. You're engineering. You tell us."
We implement it as best we can.
Marketing says, "HEY! This isn't done right! It's missing this and this and this!"
"Did you ask us to implement that? According to the user story, it passes acceptance criteria."
Marketing says, "I thought you would just know that! I didn't know it was a separate thing. Just put it on all the pages, then. You guys really should know the site better."
Engineering gets angry and hostile
-
Marketing says, "We need this removed from the site."
Engineering replies, "We have a GUI for that. Just go to this URL and you can do it yourself."
Marketing replies, "Well, if that's a really complicated thing, can you just run a script against the DB?"
Engineering says, "If we've built a UI for you, we really shouldn't be executing SQL scripts directly against the DB."
Marketing gets angry and hostile.
-
Engineering tries asking nicely.
"Marketing, if you want us to add new stuff to the site, or change stuff, please tell us what it is and where it should go and what the customer experience should be like."
Marketing replies, "We don't know the site that well. We are leaning on you to tell us."
I do not vocalize, all while trying to keep my eyes from bulging out of my head, my face red with rage, "YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF SELLING SHIT ON A WEBSITE THAT YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. YOU ARE ASKING FOR CHANGES TO SOMETHING YOU DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?"
Engineering is angry and hostile.3 -
I didn't know any one of them, we just meet at the TADHack last week end. Because my team members apologies at the last moment, I joined one of them who forgot his laptop. The third came after five minutes asking "can I join"?
We established a team from three different backgrounds, and started the work. Each one built what he know, and we integrated all of it together.
Luckily, we won.... I enjoyed these weekend...5 -
To all you people who finish the coffee in the kitchen and walk away, you are dicks and we know who you are. Use this to stop being a dick...8
-
As we may all messed up a (git) repo at the begininng, do you know the surge of adrenalin right before pushing your committed changes or merging branches?2
-
"Can you do this?"
Sure, give me the information I need...
"We don't have all of it yet"
So I can't do it then
"Well when can you do it"
When you get the information
"Do you need *all* of it"
Well, it's either I do half a job and waste my time, or get it all done in one shot
"The client wants it tomorrow"
When will we have the information?
"We don't know"
Well they aren't having it tomorrow then, are they...
Sales people... don't care *how* things work, as long as they get a tick against their name to show they've sold something...3 -
So, this baby just arrived :)
Now every game I can think of... Nahh, we all know that this helps you in programming by giving you some power9 -
Hi all. I know it's been a while. I've forgotten what days off are. However, knowing you all are here and understand the terror of horrendous code gives me comfort while dealing with statements like "the problem isn't with our code, we haven't touched it in 14 years" while discussing database upgrades (3, in fact).8
-
Today I announced to a customer (a shitty one) that we had lost all their data. When I was done explaining what happened, one of my employee turn to me and said :"oh! I know where the data are. I did a backup there". It was after 1 weeks of searching that the tech decided to tell us he knew where all the backup went... Now I have to call the customer again...2

* online meeting *
Why are ya'll muted? We can't have a conversation if you're all muted. Just unmute yourselves.
* someone had a lot of background noise *
Huh? What's happening? What's that noise? I think someone is in a very noisy place. You know what? Just mute yourselves until you want to talk.
THATS WHAT WE WERE DOING YOU PRICK4 -
Promotions? What are those.
Every title I have gained has been out of necessity of needing someone to work on stack "X".
It usually goes something like:
Dev: I quit
Management: oh shit, we need another dev 🤔oh @C0D4 can do it until we find a replacement.
@C0D4: fuck, I don't know anything about this stack.
Management: we didn't find a replacement, this thing is yours now, here's a pay bump for your efforts.
@C0D4: I swear they'll regret all these projects being managed by a single dev 1 day.7 -
Have you ever realised that @dfox and @trogus have most of our addresses because of the swag store?
They know where we all live! They could just come to our houses any time they wanted!
I'm sorry, I just sent them mine so I just realised that 😂10 -
Software is such an awe inspiring concept if you really think about it. We literally create our own reality from scratch. Binary for the wrong architecture? Don't worry we can emulate it. Network? Fully software defined. Heck, the servers don't even know if it's real or all in software. You know what? Fuck it! The machine isn't real either! All virtualized or software emulated
I'm really bad at putting things into words but the idea of software truly amazes me6 -
DevRant is the best. I just gave Imgur another try. It still makes me depressed and loose faith in humanity. All those stupid people. DevRant is much better. Here we have smart people that know how to approach problems and understand jokes.8

Some say DC is the best, Some say Marvel is the best,
But deep down we all know, 1GB is 1024 MB not 1000MB5 -
THE WORST PRANK ATTEMPT
If i remember true, it was 2012. april fool day..
me and my co-worker (we were the founders) decided to fool our members (we had a script's unofficial support forum). so, we did the plan. we register another account on march and wrote a few useful messages with it. help guys with that fake account (named as Root).
on fool day, we move the site to hidden folder (but didnt backup it) and added an index file as "hi, i am Root. you know me who am i. i hacked this site and deleted all dbs. cya later" (in turkish of course)
and we sit our chairs, began the watch our messages from facebook, skype, whatsapp etc..
we act like we are in trouble and we cant solve the problem.
at the same time, one of the our crew, decided to help us :D
so, he contact with our server's management crew. they dont know the fool too :)
server management looked up the situation without try to contact with me or my co. and we got an email from server like that
"hello tilkibey and impack, we just realized your site is hacked. so we delete your all ftp and db for safety. please contact with us asap"
we shocked and contact with them, explain the truths and request the recover our site (because we though they backup site before deleting all things). but they didnt backup it :(
so, we recover our last backup which is got nearly 10 days ago :(8 -
Third call of the morning. No one I need is answering. Boss fell asleep (but went on mute, thankfully) and deputy director is on the line listening in.
I'm hungry. Cranky. And feeling ignored.
To all my dev friends here: please answer your phones of you're needed to give information about your code. These are code specific issues (ie- application/program specific) that require knowing the code to know what broke so we know how to fix it.10 -
I could’ve cleaned it up but we all know desks aren’t naturally as clean as people make them for these types of photos...3

We all know someone who's like this
writes
console.log("hello world");
calls himself a js developer.3 -
!rant
So, as we know, Star Wars will be released this weekend.
I would ask all ranters not to post spoilers here.
Me, and I believe other ranters, will not see this weekend.
Thank you!6 -
Two friends and I are about to publish a side project in two weeks (for an open Beta) it feels good but I am kind of nervous...
Today I found new bugs and I don't know yet if we have the time to fix them all...
Do you have any tips / experience you could share with me?13 -
Seriously? There isn't a "no pants" option? Seriously? come on @dfox, we all know how stuff really gets done 😉6
-
FUCK THE EU!
Ok I said it, what? Someone had too.
Can we all move on now?
Ps: if you made it this far, be sure to ++ for your angers and frustrations over the current articles we all know and hate.5 -
Context:
PM is not an IT professional but somehow leads IT operations ... (yes... I know)
---
PM: "Hey xxzero0, do you remember about the XYZ project?"
xxzero0: "Yes, tell me"
PM: "I told the big boss we can use it to make starships and explore the universe, I also said we can cut the developing time because we are already at 70% with it".
xxzero0: "....... Do you understand we planned to use this project to deploy a small ship in the sea?"
PM: "Yes, but you clearly inexperienced developer, don't know it needs only some refactoring to explore the universe"
xxzero0: "It is more complicated. There is no logic at all. It is just displaying data without doing anything and..."
*Get interrupted*
PM: "Yes, we need some refactoring, I'm such a genius."7 -
I worked at a company that was recently acquired by another one based in Poland. On my last day at work, the CEO flew out from Kraków to meet all of us personally and treated us to dinner. Soon after, we were all inducted into their hiring process, and now I'm currently waiting for my first project at the new company 😊 brilliant guy, can't wait to know him and the team better!3
-
We don't know what one-to-many is! Instead, we convert all associated IDs to a string and join the list into a string separated by commas! Only after this absolute clownery do we save this new nice clean string to the database column! Then, when we want all associated entities, we serialize this list back into an array of IDs and retrieve them! It's clown-genius!

We were in a college group. Five people. Making project in PHP. Some forced us to use cakePHP framework than left. One guy decided to not participate and decited to do it next year. One guy didn't know PHP at all. The two of us have to do all the work for five people.
On the presentation day we have ten minutes to do it. Guy without PHP knowledge forget password for our app, make three wrong guesses and locked us out of our app for five minutes.2 -
Here is the problem.
We all make mistakes. It's part of our lives and we learn a lot from it.
But you motherfucker, acting like an all-knowing being amongst all the developers. You think no one knows better than you. You learned something 2 years ago and you think nothing has been updated after that.
You make a mistake, you accept it and learn from it. But if you think you know everything, stop asking me to review your code. Fuck you, cocksucker.4 -
Some people say they use dark themes because it looks cool, but we all know it's for when you're up late programming and don't want your eyes shot to pieces.10
-
Pressing every key on your keyboard because you don't remember how to open the boot option menu
You know we all do that.7 -
If you think meetings are bad.
Have a day full of license renewal and price negotiation talks regarding technical products.
It's funny how you can blatantly say: We don't need feature XYZ, we get it for free via BLA.... Yet they still present it in all glory.
Even better when they don't even know their alternative / competition products...
X: "our tool is better".
Me: "We have tool XY. Doesn't cost a penny, does the same, we don't need your tool".
X: "No it doesn't. Look at all the features we have *screen share presentation* with long explanations".
Y: "Yeah... You've certain additional features, but the basics are all present in the tool that we use, so my statement remains the same".
These meetings are really mind boggling insane.
Even more insane when you get the price offers.
The cloud only madness is absurd.
Sure, we move 50 terabyte plus to the cloud from premise, no problem. *🤡*
Not that we haven't told them explicitly that cloud only isn't possible....
The worst: every motherfucking company does it for every stupid single craptastic product...
You cannot even swoop it up in a single meeting... Every company. Every single product.
*booze liberate me from madness and remove the filthy stain of humanity*9 -
That's it. That's all I have for my home server setup. I don't even know why we have that sticky red thing, but today it came handy. And now I can SSH anytime I want, it's never going get shutdown 😂1
-
You know how we all get frustrated with new clients who don't provide enough information or detailed background of what the last dev did or tried?
Careful what you wish for. Just took on a new client who has sent 3 separate Word docs, all organized and color coded and fully detailed with the website's life history. All 24 pages of it.
We are supposed to fix the checkout flow and organize the download directory. That's all. -
When you're in the middle of a spree and you haven't saved in the past half hour. Then this blue beauty appears. 🙃
We all know who the winner of week 27 is...6 -
We all have that one friend who says that he is a computer genius because he built his PC himself but then he doesn't know the difference between bits and bytes.9
-
Boss coding.
Boss not fan of tests at all.
"Hey I'm doing all of tests" - boss to me.
"Cool, are they automated? Or do you want me to implement'em?" - me to him
[long speech about why tests are irrelevant including "...once I tested, it is tested, we dont need to have automated tests."] *im teaching you because you dont know voice*
Please, help meeee5 -
Long rant 😤😤😤
Today I was going to hit my project manager in the face. I can't stand people like him. In every fucking meeting he starts talking about his past successes and we are forced to listen to him. In this sprint, we had a tough task which took more time than planned. So we didn't finish it till the deadline. After working hard all night long I finally managed to get the job done. And today guess what happened? He didn't fucking appreciate it. All he was talking was mediocre look of the module we've developed for the website. And it's not even my job to make a beautiful design as a back-end developer. At a point I wanted to resign. I don't know how much I will stand this situation. He has always been like this since he came to the company. The worst part is, he is not a senior developer or something. Al he talks about is some fucking old jobs he has done we don't know if they are real or not. From every meeting we suspect his skills are limited. He just knows how to talk. He has never reviewed a single line of code because he doesn't know PHP (yes I know, I know). Hell he doesn't know any back-end language and he is supposed to create a new architecture for the website. He don't have enough database skills neither. All he says he has worked as a mobile and front-end developer. So now I'm home and don't know If I should resign or not.4 -
Designer: "And you know what we could do? We could make all the information be available anywhere the client wants. It's all in the cloud!"
PM: "Yeah! That's brilliant!" (High fives all around)
That's one day after a visit to a client saying they cannot rely on their internet connection. -
6 hours later, the call is suspended because all users went home. We can't recreate the issue anymore, but don't know that we fixed it vs not having enough people to recreate it.3
-
DO NOT be afraid to argue with people. It doesnt matter who they are. Senior engineers, tech leads, delivery managers, if you know something is wrong make it heard. I made a point of telling my Project Manager that the current project is the worst ive ever seen. The technology is awful and we all hate the development. They need to know this stuff. And if they come to you with a deadline that you dont think you can make, say it then and there. Then they cant come back and say why isnt this done. Basically dont just do as youre told. If we needed that we would get robots to do our job. We need people who think and have opinions and make those opinions heard at the appropriate level.2
-
We all know that being distracted while coding is frustrating. That's why me and my teammates (we are 3) we "protect" each other while on "full dev mode" - meaning anyone coming to disturb one of us while in that state, the other push him/her away.
The most productive 2 weeks of my life 😂😂1 -
All of my colleagues think that IT dept. know all the internet traffics.
Plot twist: we just have simple router without any log1 -
Me: Overcommunicate…
Them: we don’t need that kind of detail. We all get it.
Me: Undercommunicate…
Them: why so quiet? Does he know what he is saying?
can’t fucking win 😡1 -
Why do PMs think we are all inter changeable? Wtf?!?!?!
8 hours for me is not the same as 8 hours for some junior guy. Really, for gods sake, junior guys don't even know how tell time yet.3 -
NGL hearing the head of I.T ask you to help a brotha out and "do your magic" makes one feel pretty fucking legit.
I know I pull some magical shit, I know most developers in senior level positions or management do, but I also know we all rarely get recognized. The fact that someone would know that what you do is basically magic for your institution makes one feel so fucking good.
I really fucking try. Shit is hard and holding an entire department together sometimes gets the best of me, but I fucking try.
wish you all the same feelings all the time, always4 -
Do you know whats worse than someone reach you for an idea " Lets create X existing app, but..." ?
Its "Lets clone that app, we will sell the service cheaper than the cloned app, you do all the job, se urity, hosting, administrating, and we will split the revenue 50/50."
Just happened.1 -
Today I went to a computer store to buy laptop with my friend. When we were waiting for the store technicians to check the laptop for my friend, we found out that nearly all technicians (about 4, 5) of the computer store don't know how to enter BIOS setup for the laptop :/ How the fuck they become the store technicians if they don't fucking know how to access BIOS setup of a laptop? (one of them even suggested to use a screwdriver (wtf?) to access the BIOS the new laptop o.O)
Don't know what will they do with my friend's new laptop if I didn't tell them how to enter BIOS
(It's a Lenovo laptop, the combination to enter BIOS is fn+f2 and the store we bought the laptop is a large store in our city)3 -
We all know French people are known for their strikes and throwing down work.. but windows 3.1 still running at Orly airport? Do people even work?9

PM: "Please try to prioritize this request that we made last Friday at 5pm over all your other high priority stuff we know you're busy and we should have requested this 3 months ago... but now we need to deliver next week and well we need it"
5 minutes later "When can you deliver that?"
Another 5 minutes later "Sorry can you give me that delivery date? We REALLY need it"
Well maybe if you leave me in peace and I can concentrate on my job rather than answering silly requests I can make up an idea of how much time I need to deliver... but of course I'm just a code monkey, I press some randome keys and the magic happens. -
For all those who post pictures of their screen taken with phone camera (and we all know how crappy that usually looks), there is something called Snipping Tool! As simple as it gets.. Use it ✂😉5

I'm currently working in a web application project with multiple environments for testing, and we need to give support to all browsers.
So when a 'defect' is iddentifyed by someone, we make sure we know all the previous constraints to solve it quicker.
One of these days, this "tester" comes to us:
Tester: There is a deffect in this X screen.
IT: Ok. Can you tell me what browser you were using in the test?
Tester: The same as you. "H T T P : / / localhost:8080"

You know since everyone is starting to make jokes about wannacry, why don't we make the mother of all wannacry jokes, a full page website that looks exactly like the computer was infected5

At work we have a....err....pool of usefulness awareness situation.
You see. The school does not know all that me and the lead developer does. Our head of department does. Our manager used to do(fore she left) but as far as the rest of the 2 fucking campuses are concerned, all of our shit works through magical dwarves that live inside the servers in our server rooms.
Normally, we are fine with this. But whenever one of us misses, or decides to take the day off and some shit hits the fan...THEN and only then do our users know what we do.
So we have a "pool" of items that seem to be picked every time one of us is not there. The more it gets picked, the more people are aware of us, the more they figure out what we do...the more they start to ask for customization and shit like that.
Such a funny situation. Wonder if this will get in the way of friday morning coffee and magic the Gathering at the office.
Or me and the cms admin playing videogames together.
Oh well -
Dear Panicked Managers,
We are behind. We all know we are behind, and I would love to spend 10 hours fixing our shit.
Instead, your shit riddled brains decided that WAY too many demos, with practice demos, are the correct move! We are wasting 8 hours a week, per person working on them! That means we lose a day of development, but you are not moving deadlines and still complaining about the amount of throughput!
In those 8 hours a week, we could all build the new features, and you could throw an orgy, do lots of cocaine, beat hookers to death, do whatever CEOs do! Instead, you call us to all gather around and listen to you bitch that shit isn't getting done...
Sincerely,
Pissed Off3 -
I know we have a lot of talented people here. Piece of advice, what ever you build, believe in it. See it through. No matter how good of an idea incompleteness won't get you anywhere.
After all every other day we all analyze different successful products and say "huh... that's nothing. Even we can do that".
Well thats the difference "We" can do that, they DID it.
See your ideas through. Stay motivated =)1 -
Today I was having conversation with my friend about time consumed in fixing errors. Our non coder friend was silently listening to us.
After we finished our lunch he stood up and said,
"You guys don't know how to handle time with efficiency. Why don't you ignore all the errors, finish your coding and fix all the errors in the end. It will save a lot of time"5 -
Can we just give a round of applause to the brilliant recruiters that decided to add Microsoft Word as a requirement.
You know...to weed out all the computer illiterate software engineers......7 -
First thing, I love my colleague. I know him for 15 years and I'm under 30. But I freaking hate when he picks his nose FOR ALL THE DAY LONG and uses shared mouses and keyboards, leaving them unable to use. I have to clean all that mess and no matter what we say he still do it. :(5
-
I just want to make it clear to all of us here...
Not every goddamn thing is a bug from X or a bug from Y most of the time I, Us, We as programmers fucking make mistakes or don't know the issue because it's vague!!! IT'S NOT A FUCKING BUG!!!2 -
Google is amazingly good at using tech to solve problems we did not even know we have...
I mean.. How did we even survive til this day w/o google making restaurant reservation or barbershop calls..? We are cavemen bcz we still do it all ourselves... So inefficient..
/s4 -
How the actual fuck are we expected to know this many languages / frameworks / libraries for a web dev interview? This shit is RIDICULOUS. No one can honestly say they're half proficient at any of this stuff if they have to know ALL of it. Is this the only way to get a job these days? This sucks balls!7

Fucking hate when business people says this to me:
- You have no time to do this, we will find somebody else to do it. (EXCUSE ME? how do you know I have no time? If have no time I WILL TELL YOU)
- Your team is too busy, we will outsource that (IF THAT it's a priority, we WILL DO THAT, fuck you, I'll tell you if we need to outsource or not)
- Requirements are too complex to do now. We will think about it and we will tell you, maybe it's just enough to add a column to db (WHAT? WHAT THE FUCK IS too complex? I didn't even see anything we can call requirement, nor speak with relevant people, so how do you fucking know they are complex if you don't know shit about dev and our platform)
Conclusion
It's true, I have no time, because I don't fucking understand what do you want, so I'm running all day and night doing useless things.1 -
Western Digital has a policy change and they know that this is all we understand from the policies 😂2

I reckon in other countries people are generally nicer... In England ... We are all assholes. Even when we know we are wrong.3
-
To all the people who constantly complain about devRant not being good enough…
First off, who the fuck cares? I mean honestly, does anyone give a fuck? People have been saying for YEARS that they hate devrant and that it needs to change in whatever fucked up dev idea way that we all think the world should actually work. The real fun is how this platform evolves into different phases over time. The fun is interacting with devs anonymously talking about really anything. It doesn’t matter - as long as it’s interesting or entertaining it’s fine. Don’t fucking pretend that you are a goddamn professional elitist asshole bc we all know everyone here is weird and stupid.8 -
There's this one lead dev in our dpt who keeps posting pictures to our company's Teams 'general' channel with shit in the toilet after someone forgot to either flush or use the brush.
Caption usualy says "I don't mean to cause nausea to anyone, but we are all adults here and should know how to flush / use the toilet brush".
Does every company have this guy or are we the chosen ones?8 -
"How much of a dev are you, if you use other peoples work and just glue it together?" I once asked a friend who really loves npm and everything.
I know about code reuse and maintainability and all that but geez we had a long discussion..😅5 -
Hey fuckface!
Do you know we have console.error("...") ?
You don't have to do console.log("Error 1") all the time.9 -
Store POJOs as json inside a database column so that we have a dynamic relational database!
For those who don't know what a POJO
*POJO: plain old Java object
Technically I was asked to store all data models as json in a single column 🙄10 -
Between high school and college, working in a circuit board manufacturing storeroom.
Fun fact: when we are bagging small boards, we do not gently lay them in containers, they're usually thrown at least 6 feet into a bin of the same type of board after they're placed in the bag. We also don't remake a board when pins are bent, we just bend them back with tweezers. And you know that rule about not touching the gold connectors... Yeah... So much for that... Did I remember to mention that these boards are for medical equipment?
On the bright side, we at least have electrostatic discharge control going on all the time.3 -
A mail I got two days ago started out like this:
"Hello Mr. $myLastname,
I know the Internet Explorer is quite old but we found some errors[...]"
My mind: "NooooOOoOOOO"
They find a lot of weird stuff too, dropdowns, carousels all that major stuff didn't work.
Turns out it was a bug with bootstrap 4.1.0. It's fixed in 4.1.1 and until, release we can use 4.0 just fine.
My feelings in those 15 minutes resemble a sine wave.2 -
My First !Experience : Disappointment with a computer
My mum kept tons of floppies but we didnt have a computer at home. Went to my friends house, who had one, and had Encarta 95 (its like a fun wikipedia for kids). When I mentioned I had floppies, he asked for one, since he didnt have one. We copied Encarta to that floppy hoping we would cheat in the next computer science test. We even tested it.
After we were certain that all works (you should know we were surprised that it could fit in one floppy), we got to school, put the disk in and voila
we had copied a shortcut :)4 -
Got fired today due to one big cunt who just joined to sabotage all junior devs because his older than all of us, im dissapointed at how arrogant some of you old devs are, the good old days development houses used to be fun and young, i respect all of you with great heart but we are not trying to compete with you if we know knew tech better than you, times have changed, if you are still dumb about bootstrap dont hate on anyone but yourself. Grow deFaQuPndStopHating3

funny coincidence happened at work the other day.
One dev ask to get more ram for his pc so we sent him a link to download more ram... after all the laughs we actually gave hom more ram.
The next day, we had performance issue on our dev servers, and after checking the VM's where missing 4gb of ram each from the original setup... so i poke my dev and say see now we know where the downloaded ram came from XD. man those small things really make my day -
Recent conversation with a client for our SaaS product.
Client: So why can't we delete this information.
Me: We want to able to know who made a change to the data to avoid getting into trouble with the law.
Client: Does that mean you can see all the data on our account?
Me: (I know where she is going but let me stall)..You are the only one with access to your account. If I don't know your password, I can't access your data.
Client: But you sound like you can see the information in the cloud.
Me: (Laughs softly and segued).. The additional features you requested would be.......
Someone needs to read the T&C... -
I am building a platform. When we pitched our product to client, he said, that he want all our code on his own personal server. He don't know a thing about software development but want a his own server. He think we might sell his personal data to his competitor4

In horror movies. Characters do things that they them-self know it could kill them. Like getting in basement.
As a developer we all know to never deploy code on Friday. Here we are taking the wrong turn.2 -
Funny story:
We were going through Sprint Planning on Monday. We got through all of the tasks that we knew we had to get done, then we started going through the backlog to see what we could pull forward.
The guy running the meeting (who's not actually a Scrum master, but whatever) get's to a task, reads it aloud, and goes, "That doesn't ring any bells. Brian, it's in your name, it says it's from May, do you know what the status of this is?
Brian reads through it for about 20 seconds before saying, "That date says it's from 2017. I don't think we need it anymore."2 -
Boss: we need to standardize the CMS we use.
Me: well 90% of what we build are custom Wordpress deployments...
Boss: yeah but Wordpress is best suited for all our clients.
Me: well yeah, I know...we could use Django or Rails and give the clients more customized solutions...
Boss: yeah but not all of our developers know those frameworks, and they require maintenance...
Me: -_- we could really use Jekyll for most sites we build
Boss: yeah, but what about our clients that want a blog?
Me: ...we can build a blog with anything...
Boss: ...we just need to standardize what we use. -
I work for a programming / design studio / tech and new solution company. We do all kind of new tech inventions.
Everyone is a tech guru, except my boss who don't know one single programming language, don't know even how to format a pc, never finished his school..
The other day we asked me how to change his phone ringtone..2 -
Why is it, that every time Microsoft updates their Office, it gets worse?
You want your “ribbon simplified?” You’ve got it, we removed all the buttons that you usually need.
You want a clearer view of items? You’ve got it, we doubled the font size and added 10cm empty spaces between emails in the list.
Wanna see how the weather in Washington? You’ve got it. We added the forecast info there automatically. We know that it’s like 20 000km away from you!
What else could we do in future to fuck up your setup more?6 -
Tuesdays at work suck. This is something I've put a lot of thought into.
Take Monday for instance, we love to hate him, when it comes to Mondays we all know the score we tell Monday where he can go and he takes that and owns it. He knows we hate him and we all know where we stand.
Wednesday is hump day, not great but we know we're halfway through the week. Thursday gets us a little excited cos we can see the end of the week.
Friday is the one we've been waiting for and we love him, Saturday and Sunday are bliss.
Tuesday... What's Tuesday got? It's just a day, there's nothing going on with Tuesdays.
Well except this week, in the UK we had Monday off as a statutory vacation, so this week, this week Tuesday is the day we love to hate, he's now got all this beginning of the week rage directed at him. The other days are unaffected, Thursday and Friday still have their thing, Wednesday still marks the half way point.
Monday has buggered off and let Tuesday be something for a day, I don't think he can take it. If he could Monday would probably go into retirement. Monday probably has more hatred directed towards it than Katie Hopkins (and that's saying something).
In short, no, no I do not want to get out of bed and go to work today, but I will, cos that's just what we do, but fuck you Tuesday.
Fuck you with a bag of spanners...
...Sideways...
...With habanero sauce...
... And a pineapple.1 -
Today we've discovered that our (western) client (or slack? we don't know yet) actively removes all messages if they contain some forbidden words.
Apparently, 'graphql' is one of the forbidden words.
Talk about censorship in the east... right...3 -
The power to make windows open source. O;)....cuz we all know that the community would do a better job at making sure it's secure xD7

Get back to work today, see a mail from yesterday when I was off sick
"Mr Colleague has tendered his registration. His last day with Company will be 31st Jan 2024"
Do they think we're stupid or something? We all know the guy got sacked. We're required to give a calendar month's notice. So when there's a same day resignation, we all know7 -
Cry and panic because they don't know the required technology to complete the task.

Our clients are upto date with technologies and website standards. We make all our websites in Joomla using HTML5.3 and CSS3. How much of HTML5.3 do you know?6

Clojure developers: why has our awesome language not taken the world by storm? how do we get new developers interested in Clojure and Lisp! its not as hard as people make it out to be!!
Also Clojure developers: Yeh so we know you are all probably not used to an editor like emacs *crowd looks in confusion*....BUT YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD EMACS, INSTALL ALL THESE PLUGINS, MAKE SURE THAT THIS SHIT CALLED CIDER WORKS AND LEARN ALL OF THSE CTRL+<Fuck-Mx-You> COMBINATIONS!!
As someone that has been in the community for so long...I can't with the mentality of some of these people, and it scares me because I fear for Clojure disappearing.17 -
Calling All Developers!
This is very very random, but I am taking an IT Careers class for my software Development degree. As my last assignment, I need to interview a software developer. I don't know any personally and we were told we can reach out to people online who have had lots of experience. I don't know if this is too weird, but I need an interviewee just to answer about 20 questions. I'm so stuck and don't know where to go!6 -
Microsoft released PowerShell for Linux. Why? They released IE for OS X way back and we all know how that turned out....10
-
Ok so you're a pretty good programmer. You don't take time to grasp stuff, but then we all know there are times when we all fail to understand certain things. But why does that 'making a fool out of yourself' incident HAVE to happen when your colleagues are around?
Scene 1:
Coding alone, no bugs at all. Perfectly optimized code. Runs with no compile-time errors or warnings.
Scene 2 :
Typing code. Colleague enters my cabin. Before even I execute it, finds 300 compile-time errors. All of them happen to be true
Judged for life..
Why, oh programmer god, why?2 -
>"We need this project finished for tomorrow"
<"But we don't even know what the client wants for parts X, Y and Z"
I'm currently in a sinking ship of a company that has no proper project management or documentation. Requirements mutate with the lead manager's biorhythms and all projects are delayed because he's incapable of scouting or retaining talent.
Unless I've misread their financial situation, I don't think they'll stay in business throughout the year without some major restructuring.2 -
We all know that scumbag test that sporadically decides to fail. Simply running it again makes it pass.1

People have a hard time realizing we do have to cover (at least try) all the possibilities... Yes ma'am I do have to know everything beforehand...

“Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.”
― Ernest Hemingway
oh o we are all super intelligent 😎
// TGIF is a luxury for dev so I made a new name for Friday 😋6 -
I'd say it was when I did a Codereview and the dev said that he doesn't really know how the code works and he doesn't quite know what it's purpose is supposed to be.
We are talking about less then 200 lines, all written by himself, this is not copied code.1 -
Wow, very technical and clear documentation:
"While we do not publish the symbol limits for the streaming API, we do monitor for abuse to make sure people aren’t doing anything egregious. Essentially, ask for what you need. Don’t abuse the APIs and you should be fine."
...and, we all know what 'fine' stands for, right?

Tl; dr: Linux on Ryzen is a pain at the moment.
Now for the long part: Our student council got new computers because the old ones where slow as hell. As one of the admins, the others and I together decided that ryzen would be a good option, because they are not that expensive and we wouldn't have to buy gpus. (Wrong decision it turns out.) We settled on the ryzen 3 2200G and bought three systems to replace the old ones.
We meet Saturday morning and build the systems. All was fine and we were happy. The we tried to install ubuntu via preseeded netboot, which seemed to work fine at first. Then we started having weird screen issues and couldn't proceed with the installation. (See image) we then grumpily decided to just install them all one by one, flashed two usbs and started installing. On two systems the installation worked and we installed our packages, we weren't so lucky with the third one. It would crash on us all the time, even in bios. While that was going on we tried to set the other two up, turns out those two were also crashing but not as frequent as the other one. So we start to google and find people saying that kernel 4.19 kinda fixes it. We install it on the two working machines and the crashes get less frequent but are still there. At that point it was midnight and we went home.
Sunday morning: we reseated the cpu on the third system and it seems to be better now (it installed on the second try) and we were able to change the kernel. Yay. Now all three are in a state where they will sometimes randomly reset. :/ and we don't know what to try anymore.... Any suggestions?1 -
Me: Can you write the exact code one more time but in C language this time, so we can see it?
Other: But why, what's the problem?
Me: I don't know, maybe is garbage collector which collected all your code because IT LOOKS LIKE TRASHHHHH :@:@:@:@2 -
I was hired to a working team that is full of experienced people who know how to code but half the team is awfull at solving problems, and all they do is blame each other... why cant they understand we are one team and rather work on solution for 30 minutes they spent deciding who fucked up...2

Google knows i accidentally use EDGE browser and they want me back to chrome. Oh Google !
Google want to take over entirely, although all we know edge is use by .0001% people this days 😂😂😂😂😂5 -

Coding tests. I hate them. On any timed test, I completely lock up and forget everything I know. I'm amazed I've gone 26 years in my career without being fired for not taking tests well. Because, as we all know, that's the core task of every single job. Taking timed tests and shit.8

Why are there bots on devrant now this app has like 50 active users and we’re all tech savvy enough to know not to fall for a shit crypto scam damnit I hate crypto just shut up about blockchain we get it you’re compensating for something9

Devops is an HR/management wank-word.
Of course we all know that devops is a lean, next generation, best-practice, shifting focus towards actionable items to facilitate value added integration and synergy between two key silos of the company.2 -
Hi everyone! (Specially pentesting masters!)
I got a question:
We all know the Nmap's abillity for detecting os using 1 open and 1 closed port,
Is there any way or method to detect os without any closed port ?(open ports exist)
Thanks alot 😃4 -

HEY Y'ALL! I need help.
So...... recently me and a friend are trying to move servers from a paid one to our own, named Vector. All of the web-side is basically done. However, port 25 is blocked by the ISP. After a few days of messing around in various Linux VMs, we gave up.
Point is, does anyone know where we could get a cheap VPS for email hosting?8 -
I work on a team project for a test and maintenance course in University. We agreed as a team to adopt a git infrastructure that would prioritize the stability of the master branch at all cost by only updating commits up to the next stable point and tagging every single release. We have a long polling development branch to prepare our releases and we create feature branches for the tickets we need to resolve. I even wrote documentation to make sure that we don't forget and protected the master branch on gitlab from direct modifications.
Can someone fucking tell me how one of my teammates managed to fuck over all of this and work on an unfinished feature straight on master?
N.b. I know that he probably edited straight from gitlab's online text editor because they have a big where they don't restrict modifications on protected branches.1 -
Enterprise that "doesn't have training budget".
Meeting #1: We need to cut the budget and can't guarantee anyone will still have their job next fiscal.
Meeting #2: Hey you all need to read this book. It's mandatory and we will have a follow up meeting to talk about it.
All contractors: okay, but just so you know reading this book is billable and is subject to overtime pay.

This one just popped into my head. A little late but still pretty idiotic.
So in college, shortly after we learned HTML, CSS, PHP and some very basic JS (and various other things ofc) we had to choose which study direction we wanted to go.
This included web development.
My brilliant classmate asked me the following around that time: "after all the webdev stuff they taught us, I don't know what more they can teach us"
So yeah..........
Idiot1 -
Honestly if another person complains about how Java and JavaScript are not the same at all I'm gunna be mad2
-
So, in a school project we use BaseCamp for project management.
When discussing about using it I was about to say that I know the guy who built it - but then I remembered he was just in the devRant podcast and I actually don't know him at all!1 -
Amazing how a giant cloud service like AWS can go down. It feels like the whole cloud is so fragile. All of a sudden it will rain and everything we know of will vanish.2
-
Our PM just send a mail to our team, that after testing the latest extension we made to the project, he could not find a single issue or bug (usually there are some minor UI problems or some edge case bugs we did not think about or know existed)
and what a incredibly great job we did, and he also forwarded the mail to all our managers up the hierarchy right under the CEO.
The appreciation is a nice change to the self-hatred I feel while coding3 -
Stories from a Startup #2
One day our CEO stormed through the office, going door-to-door holding a cease-and-desist notice he got from our ISP because someone decided to pirate "Chappie" at work.
Definitely wasn't me. 👀 Don't know if he found out who did it, though... but we all certainly knew.5 -
I am currently working as a consultant and I like it. It also makes upset/happy/schadenfroh (not entirely sure how I feel about it) when we tell the client what work needs to be done in which order and why just so they can throw it all overboard and we do it the way they want it and it bites them in the ass a few month down the line.
They hire us for the external professional experience that we bring, so listen to us. We did this before, we know what works, and we know way your way does not work.7 -
COV-SARS-2 rant!!
I know most of us engineers/developers/etc are quite introverted people, who are happiest when we are left alone with our best friends (we all know who/what those are 👨🏼💻), but I miss working with colleagues in the office, and seeing some faces as well :(
Discussing plans over hangouts/slack can sometimes be cumbersome, compared to face-to-face conversations 🤷♂️13 -
Entering the computer lab for the first time in my life when I was in class 3. Each computer was assigned to 3 children (I know). We saw and played perhaps the most awesome game ever made;
Will never forget those 30 minutes of my life. (although I lost all my lives on the very first level)3 -
in my country, we will be having a 2 day Muslim holiday. I have mapped out all the programming tasks I need to attend to during those days and thinking of staying back at the office but my gf is thinking of coming over. this will mean not achieving all the tasks which is a problem as I Dont know when next such holiday will be.
how best do I tell her not to come?14 -
You know shit is going to hit the fan if the sentence "c++ is the same as java" is said because fuck all the underlying parts of software. It's all the fucking same. Oh and to write a newline in bash we don't use \n or so, we just put an empty echo in there. And fuck this #!/bin/bash line, I'm a teacher. I don't need to know how shit works to teach shit. Let's teach 'em you need stdio for printf even tho it compiles fine without on linux (wtf moment number one, asking em leaves you with "dunno..") and as someone who knows c you look at your terminal questioning everything you ever learned in your whole life. And then we let you look into the binaries with ldd and all the good stuff but we won't explain you why you can see a size difference in the compiled files even tho you included stdio in the second one, and all symbol tables show the exact same thing but dude chill, we don't know what's going on either.
Oh and btw don't use different directory names as we do in our examples. You won't find your own path, there is no tab key you can press to auto-fill shit.
But thats not everything. How about we fill a whole semester with "this is how to printf" but make you write a whole game with unity and c#. (not thaught even the slightest bit until then btw)
Now that you half-assed everything because we put you in a group full of fucks who don't even know what a compiler is but want to tell you you don't know shit and show you their non-working unfinished algorithms in some not-even-syntax-correct java...
...how about we finally go on with Algebra II: complex numbers, how they are going to fuck up your life, how we can do roots of negative numbers all of the sudden and let you do some probability shit no one ever fucking needs. BUT WHY DON'T YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ALREADY HMMMMM, IT'S YOUR SECOND LESSON, YOU WENT TO SCHOOL PLS BE A MATH PRO ASAP CUS YOU NEED IT SO MUCH BUT YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW PROPER SYNTAX, HOW MEMORY MANAGEMENT WORKS, WHAT A REFERENCE IS AND PLS FINALLY FORGET THE WORD "ALLOCATION" IT DOESN'T PLAY A SINGLE ROLE YOU ARE STUDYING SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT WHY ARE YOU SO BAD AT ECONOMICS IT MAKES NO SENSE I MEAN YOU HAD A WHOLE SEMESTER OF HOW TO GREET SOMEONE IN ENGLISH, MATHS > ECONOMICS > ENGLISH > FUCKING SHIT > CODING SKILL THATS HOW THE PRIORITIES WORK FOR US WHY DON'T YOU GET IT IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE BRAH4 -
I work with a guy who is genius in his field, but doesn't have much ability outside of it, his view is we should all know what he knows and not bother him with bugs in his code we should fix the issues ourselves. Oh how the shoe was on the other foot when he needed help with a personal app.4

Why do germans have to use STRG?
ITS CONFUSING!
Im Swiss german and people often say to me use STRG!
Only that im speaking german isn't a real Argument! Why are we even using different keyboard-layouts?
Why arent we all using CTRL?
Its pretty mich the Standard for all keyboards!
And what confused me the most when er got Windows 7 machines at primary school!
I didn't know what fucking button to press until the IT Guy of our school came and explained US all that STRG was CTRL!
And the most worst of all, when german youtubers say Press CTRL in a Video but show STRG! -

We all have that one colleague who asks for help with his code and when you try and talk about it, he acts like he's got everything figured out.
These guys are so frustrating,if you know it already why'd you call me in the middle of the night to fix an important bug.1 -
If we were talking - and then all of the sudden, I don’t talk to you anymore... it’s probably because you ignored my advice and chose to go to an especially bad boot camp. Now - that’s fine! But the reason I’m not talking to you is because I just don’t know how to say anything positive about your terrible decision and the terrible school... so - I’m just not saying anything at all.8
-
Quality != more work + less talk
Quality = more talk resulting in less work.
That makes no sense mathematically.
“Let’s talk more about shit before we create shit”.
That’s a little better.
“Let’s talk more so we don’t create shit”.
Getting closer.
“Let’s talk more about what is needed till we all know what is best before we program a damn machine?”
...This is going nowhere fast.
Okay fuck it. Let’s just code some stuff. It’s more enjoyable.7 -
This is a real history..
So i went to my friend’s party.. and he invited this hot girl.. (u know the girl that would never talk to any programmer)..
so she started asking me about programming, maths, software...
and I was like wtf.. is this real? (because u guys know that this is impossible jaja)
Actually, we spent all night talking about it..
for some reason she started hanging out with me and my friend..
now we are dating.. kind of crazy uh?
(she is an engineer btw)4 -
So, we are having a SaaS service for people where they can build X stuff. It is all fine as long as you are using basic things there, no complex cases and so on. Even on some complex - it does work just fine.
Here's the rant itself:
The production server throws us errors every 5-10 minutes that something broke and fails to do job X. At first we were all hands on deck fixing it ASAP to make it stable to later realise that most of these cases were users doing stupid shit. Then we began to fix the core issues rather than chasing every single issue there is (costs are important you know) - funny enough, we get few support requests a week and our 1h response time + 24h fix time usually buys us that customer and allows t o leave a great impression.
So all in all, bugles production is good but great support - is way better. Users can deal with issues especially if they are experimenting there but when they need answers - you'd better give it to them.1 -
my company believes microsoft dynamics crm is the solution to all enterprise problems and they have used crm to build all manner of stuff it wasn't meant for. now we have bugs when users perform the slightest tasks..when people who dont know shit make tech decisions it always goes down south.2

As we all know(or suppose) that Google is silently listening to us, is there any way to stop him without covering the microphone physically (I know it can be a suggestion)?
Like some trustable app to take the mic permissions so that Google will not be able to use that resource, or something else.16 -
Today was a real Monday (I know it's Wednesday, let me explain).
Nothing worked. Not for me and not for my coworker. Across all tasks that we did today. It was very frustrating and a lot of swearing was involved.
Every week has to have a Monday I guess. Let's hope tomorrow gets better.1 -
It's my first rant. So please ++1 me.
Now my rant:
In this semester I had a subject about system architecture. In this class, we must learn Java script, C# (and ASP.NET framework ), PHP (and Zend Framework 2), but in the classes is taught only UML and patterns. In the moodle of the subject we don't have any information about any of the languages and if we ask the teachers they don't know anything.
And we need in 4 weeks do a work with a widget in javascript, 2 Asp.net mvc, 1 asp.net web api. All with authentication.
So we are all fucked10 -
Guys at work just found out that they can see all the commits in a repo that they have to change stuff in on a daily basis..
Granted they aren't really the most tech savvy sometimes but they have both been there for like a year...
Made me laugh a bit when one went
"Dude did you know we can search our git for commits? So we can look for who fucked up!?" -
This was in 1st semester and our CSE course went under some major course revision. Python was to be taught in place of C. Now the professor we had was very famous and we were excited to be in his class. But little did we knew he had no knowledge of Python at all. He used to tell the lab assistant to teach. It was so bad that I lost all interest in programming!!
But we all studied python later in our winter holidays for further courses.
Next semester we had OOP and this is what happened:
1st lab:
Professor(different): I expect you have basic knowledge in programming so I have uploaded.
Every question was related to structures in C.
In the same semester, we had data structures where we were 'expected' to know C or C++.
Later we came to know that Python was not going to be of any use in any course ! First semester went into dustbin.
/*
It was pretty long rant. Hope you didn't get bored :P

Every week since I started the company:
Boss "We need a special feed of resources for this customer."
We say "Great let's build support for custom feeds."
Boss says "Could we just hard code that resource in really quickly?"
This week:
Boss says "Could you make a system that dynamically let's me know what resources has been hard-coded in all special feeds, and that alerts me when a resource goes offline".
Now what should we respond?
Help us out! Best suggestion might turn in to an email to boss..7 -

You know, I sort of hope that open-plan offices become illegal after this Corona crisis.
We all know most companies don't give a flying fuck about the productivity, opinion or wellbeing of their "lowly work force". OTOH maybe, just maybe, do politicians care about lowering the risk of such a pandemic repeating. Pass some laws for reasonable working conditions already!5 -
After graduating, me and my friends looked and applied for jobs immediately. Our first job interview consists of 2 additional interviews but sadly, I failed the second one (don't ask why) but all of my friends passed so I was really bummed out. But I still attended the final interview and surprisingly, they didn't know I failed and we all got the job.2

Does anyone actually fucking know how certs and provisioning profiles work for large iOS teams without using the cancerous auto provision checkbox? Are we all just fucking it up all the time??3

Him/Her/It/She/They bullshit!!!

"All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work … It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions … It’s gonna take awhile … You’ve just gotta fight your way through." - Ira Glass

Someone is trying to get into my shit. Mail Accounts and my phone is receiving lots of. Spam calls and phishing messages...
Fucking bastards..
We all get phishing shit but if it’s targeted it makes me feel awkward..
Little fucking bastards.. I think I even know who it is.. that useless piece of junk that got fired because of my honest feedback. Not many others know my current nr, emails etc..7 -
Master Javascript from A to Z.
Naah just kidding we all know that's impossible, I'll buy google instead.2 -
My coworker pushed changes to almost all of our ASP.NET pages. However, he did so by pushing only his files, and when asked to merge, he overwrote all of our changes to those pages since he last pulled from the server, which was ages ago. We were three changesets past that overwrite before we noticed things we'd already fixed were gone. Had to revert, which we didn't know how to do, and we didn't know what he changed in his push, because he didn't comment on the changeset. He undid weeks of work, thankfully we only lost a few days worth over we reverted. We're going to have a quick lesson on merging correctly on Monday when we all get back10

An AI that's sole purpose is to teach us what we don't know or something we missed by combing the Internet and putting all the information together. For example, it should be able to figure out the most efficient way to launch a rocket based on everything we know already5

People talk about others last words, but we all know that our last code would be much more interesting 😇1

Manager's document instructions
cover all topics but we don't want a detailed doc
nothing should remain unexplained but it should not have exhaustive coverage of project since we don't have the time.
I know this will take time but we have only 2 days -
I want to rant about my college.
I studied computer engineering, we spent 5 years studying circuits, diodes, CPUs etc ..
It's cool and all but like in my country we don't have a single computer's manufacturing company and all computer engineering students work in software development. But they didn't teach us a single usfel thing for work! We only studied Java and C++, nothing more and our professors claim that you guys can learn software development from the internet.
Our professors whom they don't even know how to debug a code not to mention how to full screen a power point presentation.
My point is college is trash.3 -
da fuq.
My manager wants me to write specific test cases for status quo behavior (without turning on new features) on mobile web.
and TEST IT ON DEVICE NOT SIMULATORS
Does he know it's the 2020s?
and does he know all our changes were already out since we deployed it the first time? aka customers already tested it for us?
I'm not gonna tell him and open another can of worms lol3 -
I know we all start from the bottom but for fuck's sake some people have no fucking clue what the are doing.

What's the best natural language processing software that won't f you up?
I'm a big fan of Alexa's capabilities but we all know that Alexa is to security what North Korea is to democracy.
Is there any software that can compete with powerhouses that are Alexa, Google home, Siri or cortana?4 -
We have a role/team/user system where we can add people to teams so they can see our code.
Every time I have to add people to something, 20-something emails arrive to inform the new users' managers and let the user know that a request has been made.
Never do I feel as anxious as when all these emails go out and everybody sees my name and I immediately feel like I fucked up -
Can we PLEASE once and for all redesign email and texting to be whitelist only?
Seriously, blacklisting doesn't work. We still have assholes that just because they know a line of text or a phone number can harass you forever. It IS harassment and needs to stop. We can always have the option of throw away blacklist addresses, but lets make primary email and phone numbers whitelist only as a standard feature. The business of SPAM would be dead overnight.4 -
Damn you OVH... You and your goddamn deals again... Now I ended up buying 2 domains for a project again. We all know I'll leave the domain in my cloudflare "keychain" without using it until it expires, because I'll find a fancier and more fun project 😅
I'm at 12 domains right now... I think I might be addicted 🤔
Btw, theres a sick deal going on over at OVH, .com is only 1,20€... Better get your project domain which you'll probably never use again now 😂4 -
Alright my fellow devs and other tech related/adjacent people, we can easily glean from your rants and profiles what you do while developing. But I want to get to know the person behind the screen. After all we aren't our jobs.
So, outside of software development and related activities, what do you do in your spare time?7 -
That moment you’re sitting at a developers conference and some keynote about some lame business plan is given... We all know you came from nothing and became big because of the good work you did. Now, gtfo!

My web dev teacher was drunk almost every lesson, and my C++ teachers don't care about visiting our high school)) All we know is learnt by ourselves
Other teacher hates when we type

Instead of
void smth()

And wants to overwrite the code to fix these style errors))3 -
I hate when people say "why do you prefer programming instead of football/sports? " . I like sports but I hate all the super addicted people who fight just because someone said " I don't follow your team".
Is too bad to say that I don't know all the players of a team ? If I say so there will be always someone saying " We know that, you are a fucking nerd.".
Oh well sorry for the angry post. I am more calm now.9 -
I work on my high school's tech team but all we do is hardware replacement work which I've been doing since I know how to read disassembly instructions. (I was a bored destructive kid)
I thought I was going to enjoy work and learn. Now all I do is work with immature children who know nothing and learn programming on my own when we don't have parts in
Also attempt to educate my 'coworkers' when we do have software issues I know about -
AI applications:
We all know how AI is going to be powerful and drive the world in future. But I don't see any real world applications which can be developed using AI. If you know any real world applications please share here.

So we have outsourced one of systems (i dodnt had enough time to do it myself)
I know, i know, i could finish there.
We all know that there is a possibility if you need to add timestamp to table to know when row was created. Its worth mentioning its table used to count money.
So we have that thing, vouchers, and of course they have expiry date on them.
Orginal authors vanished (bielarus or how its in english, they have ongoing shitstorm, so i understand) and I needed to make a small adjustment.
So ya all would expect that field 'created_at' which defaults to current_timestamp() would be... Well current timestamp, of creation of record, right? Riiiiight?
WRONG.
Their hacky solutions INC decided its great idea to make that date of expiry, and current timestamp on use.
Becouee fuck logic and clarity.3 -
Today i sent an email to a client about some last details of a project. This happened in the morning.
The day is now over and got no response.
Tomorrow is Friday.
We all know now what is going to happen.1 -
Recently briefed a manager that we need to adjust Q2 plans to address the institutional knowledge lost during layoffs.
Yes, I know, write documentation, etc. This is reality, all our shit ain't documented.2 -
So we have spent the last ~3 weeks creating workarounds for bugs that were found during testing against iOS 11 beta 1.
Today I had to go in and undo all the merges because as of beta 7 Apple have fixed the issues we were seeing.
Weeks of effort wasted that could have been spent upskilling or fixing build issues with an app that will have a release due in the coming weeks and we currently know little about.3 -
Look... As much as I want to believe this... We all know it won't happen...
The tie between iOS and the in house ARM chips is something you can't replicate with just a new piece of hardware...5 -
Its feels so damn good to know we live in a time where computation has become so damn cheap that Amazon gives away a Tesla configured system for around 2.5$ an hour ... Like seriously.. all this progress took it's time .. but still seems really fast .. well .. good for us .. no rant here 😂

So there was this project in second year of uni, I was in a team with 2 friends, we had to do a small project to learn programming. I was the most experimented one but still very bad.
One night, I took a few beers and started coding.
I wrote almost all the thing that night, the main functionalities plus the input/output.
But as I was drunk I made some weird decisions:
-naming all the classes in french and all the variables in English
-no tests (who does tests?)
-comments in Spanish
The next morning, when I send the code to my friends (we didn't know about git yet), they started hallucinating. We spent a lot of time refactoring and cleaning.
In the end, as most of the logic was there, we ended up the project a few days before due date and celebrated with more beers 🍺2 -
We all know that node_modules is the heaviest folder in the whole universe, right?
Weel now that I'm starting to use ionic and cordova I get to use them for apps as well, not only websites!
Fuck my life, seriously7 -
I've though about this off and on but we all know 1st and 3rd party companies. What about 2nd companies though? I mean think about it Apple is the first party company and Mojang is the third party company. What about the second company though? I know I know I just could look it up on Google but eh!3

Hello all, I know we can search in git lab for the labels(easy, first commit etc) to find open source projects that suit me, but as a rookie it gets a bit frustrating not understanding the project and so on. Does anyone know a better way to contribute to open source and learning at the same time?2
-
A question, because we currently discussing it at work:
We want to add a permission role system and we will have kind of fixed permission roles like a role without any permissions, a support role with some permissions and an admin role with all permissions. Should I add role entries in migrations?
The role system wouldn't be very generic anymore.
But we need e.g. a default role for new users and I don't know how to do it, without a fixed role in db.
Maybe you all have an opinion on it.2 -
Can we invent a firewall which blocks out all the shit about: woke, alt right, left, right, politics in general, global warming, aging of population and the rest of scary or extremely divisive stuff? I know which is impossible because of HTTPS but if it existed I would gladly install it on my home network.10

Quote from one of the seniors here:
"Build as simply as possible, in case other people don't know what they're doing"
So, instead of using all tools available (I'm trying to introduce using AspectJ), we should build for the least knowledgeable developer and not teach them anything new.11 -
I've been developing in JS for a bit of time now and it was amazing to start with but, for all the problems we all know I d like to move to something else... I m really interested in Dart because of the JS compatibility and the Mobile Framework. Has anyone worked with it?2

I’m so glad I work at a company without a dev ops... it’s so much smoother and money isn’t wasted on a non engineer, or someone who can’t jump in and assist where needed.
We have a weekly team meeting including the mech, elec and software guys... then we have a weekly open issue meeting per project only those on the project go to. We all know what we need to do individually and we just get it done... no need for the middle man dev ops to divide up tasks and shit.. we hear the issues straight from the product owners and get to work... we don’t have defined structured scrums and burn downs...it’s very agile tho.. much like how engineers 40 years ago achieved things. It’s quite awesome.6 -
Oh, here's an environment variable that needs to be set in order to work, not mentioned at all in the documentation, only found when your CI/CD fails, blah blah blah i'm an ignorant human who doesn't give a shit enough or have enough pride in my job to write proper documentation
meanwhile managers and "product types" - we don't care about documentation, just being faster and that newest AI blockchain chatbot that we need now even though we don't understand the first damn thing about it, slop slop barf barf
Source, not a small at all org: it's the docker orb: https://circleci.com/developer/...
You need to set the docker password as an environment variable, its not just an amazing 3 step magic wand as the 'steps' suggest
yawn
but you know what? waste my time, as well as all the other developers down the road, that's just how it is these days you know2 -
Do you all sometimes have this strange feeling, that.. actually humanity would not lose anything, if we killed all that useless tech we earn our money with?
Yeah, we get all that propaganda how technical prowess is empowering and sure we all know it's a nice feeling if you can apply the right clicks and bit flips to make the machine do as you want so you feel like the apprentice's sorcerer.
BUT even if you believe your user story adds some business value to some abstract package - what do these devices mostly do? Distract, diffuse your focus, envy other eye-porn provider, endless aberration of clips.
Fuck social media!
(Yes, I know I am on one, but this is because I haven't given up hope on this one.)6 -
Hello all (App devs) I have finalized all APIs and here is the postman collection for you. I have been working on the chat page so excuse me for my delay but I finished all the system all that is remaining is the chat. I will be working on it tonight.
Please let me know if there is anything wrong.
Dev 1: thank you will see then asap.
Dev 2: why do u want to make me lost we said u deliver the chat first and then we move forward with the app.
Me: well I had some difficulties with the chat so I finalized all else and u can fix those while I fix the chat
Dev 2: no this is not what we agreed on. This is propostrous. I will not do anything anymore. I need the chat to finale x y and z.
Me: dude the chat has nothing to do with x y and z u can finalize those and then fix the chat!
Dev 2: no I don't understand this is not right.
Me: dude I built the backend I know what u need for x y z. Anyway why all the blame and the destructive approach?
Dev 2 don't think we r kids we r not kids .. (bullshit talk)...
This is the scenario that happens Everytime a pussy of a Dev is late and is ignorant of their job and all about blame it on the weakest point.
Therefore guess what's drafted ?!
MY RESIGNATION PAPER!1 -
I know a senior developer that knows quite a bit, im glad, this is how we grow. He has a habbit of wanting to be the main attraction in all conversations, either tlaking louder than others or sticking to a point in a subject he is not correct in to try force his opinion (i dont speak kuch around him because of this exact reason).
Today we talking about react, we have been working together as i am suppose to transition into senior and we are going incremently rewrite the application in react. So learning react was fun as you could imgine. I came from a background already knowing this and being exposed and that is react and react native. For skme reason i let him talk but he doesnt me especiallt knowing im correcr about something because we have the internet to check things. He looks at me and literally goes red in his face when i suggest standards that would make the code easier to read. Less to type and all the small things and showing him old things i worked on to give a base for him to work off and be there when he needs. Allnhe does is complain and i dont know how to tell him he has a way of approaching a situation not the best andni worry for other junior/mid developers that has to work with him because he will make them believe they are wrong and when they arent hust because he wont calm his ego. We are suppose to be in the community all together to build platforms and progress the sector and better the lives of people. Not waste time picking on eachother. We have prefeences abd we can debate that is important as it allows us to doubt and then make us want to learn more. I just wish there was a way to tell him because we all know. Noone would want to work with someone that is suppose to better you in your career and as a person1 -
I'm taking a class in my university about Cloud computing. In 2 weeks we made a simple web app to upload videos and then a simple job that converts all videos to mp4.
Now we took the app to the Cloud using AWS. We created different instances for the web servers, we changed the database to NoSQL, used SQS to queue the convert videos jobs to the different workers instances, used SES, S3, CloudFront, ElastiCache. All that stuff.
And all that is worthless because I cannot get my Ubuntu instance to run a fucking command on reboot. I don't really know how and I feel that all my work was wasted.
Feels bad man2 -
You know what sucks when you are in school? When you're writing a fucking test tomorrow about DSL and your fucking teacher is teaching a new fucking topic ONE FUCKING DAY BEFOR THE FUCKING TEST AND THAT TOPIC IS VPN AND ITS COMPLETLY IRRELEVANT TO YOUR FUCKING TEST! And worst of all: we are writing 2 other tests on Operating Systems and LCD Displays too! WHAT THE FUCK HOW SHOULD I LEARN ALL THIS SHIT7

And so this morning we put aside our usual daily activities for a while, and gather here to give expression to the thoughts and feelings that well up in us at this time of loss.
And also because in one-way or another,
GitHub's sudden acquisition
Affecting all of us.
Please raise your glasses as we drink a toast to the memory of such a splendid tool, that we know without a doubt, will never be the same as we know it right now.2 -
We have a BA on my team who isn't technical (which isn't a problem by itself), doesn't know the product, barely understands the agile process and our project management tools, and is generally rude to most people on the project.
She spends most of the day on her phone and occasionally badgering people with inane questions that she could answer if she spent any effort at all.
I don't know who's keeping her employed or why.5 -
Hi everyone well we quit gg scripting cause we figured out lua can be converted to cpp for memory searches! we all know lua and know how to convert it to cpp but for the gui

Man, I sort of hate when a new colleague enters the company’s GitHub org with a newly created GitHub account only for that job. I mean, I get it, but what’s the purpose of ‘an account’ if you’re going to have 10 or so accounts with all your work, stars, badges, contacts scattered all over them. Just have one, where we can actually get to know you as a fellow dev.5

I like scrum. I really love working that way. And imo the daily scrum meeting is pretty useful.
But now we have two of them every day. I don't know how to feel about it :/ the one mornings is good and all but the one in the noon just kills my focus1 -
Almost all people who are unfamiliar with modern websites don't know that they don't need to 'allow notifications' to access a website's content.

We need to do something about this, we're responsible.4 -
There is this local cloud service provider I used to like, since the promise was "it's from Africa" woi, they don't know shit. We tell then to open port 8888 ssh and 8899 since firewall is configured on their side, they close all ports then you can't ssh into the server. They take another 2 hours to fix that. Later on we change our ports and then tell them to change some ports, they open and close all ports (we discovered again because we were locked out again and had to d an nmap to see what was happening). Apparently the staff we we're talking to didn't know much about configuring servers only the senior management knew (I think to cut down costs), then we tell then to terminate services but they decide to bill us for another month (bullying) and gave us a warning letter from their lawyer for not paying for that month and since we are a small startup, we can't afford a court case which will drain us cash so we had to pay for shitty service and some month arr angry

I am a cs student at first class. Obviously we take an algorithm lesson. However, despite we have learned all things related to OOP , we didn't even learn switch case statement not even bubble sort algorithm or anything related to the algorithms. Because of that in my free time I learn this stuff individually. I know we will learn these things in the second class but it doesn't make sense to program anything without knowing them because you need to use them. You can use standard library but that doesn't mean you don't need to know how that works.

Le Angular programmer
Me: I need to add all these fields across this 30 page (seriously) questionnaire to the dataLayer for Google Analytics...I'll see if I can loop over all the controls and get the native element so that I can do things with it.
Also me: WTF do you mean I don't have access to the native element? Damn it! What does Google say?
**terrible french accent**
A few moments later
**end terrible french accent**
Me: I don't want to have to create a directive to put on every single one of these fields. That's dumb. Not gonna do it...bad vanilla JavaScript?
**terrible french accent**
Several minutes later
**end terrible french accent**
Me: Wait...if we use this directive then the directive can handle all the things AND we can use it outside of this questionnaire. The rest of the app can send this data so that Google Analytics can know all the things
Man Google..You sure do know what I want before I know what I want...Are you spying on me too?1 -
If kinda curious about the Blazor Framework of Microsoft about the c# replacement. I'm a designer heavily concern about animation on the web, for what i have know till this day. Animation on the web was made by CSS and JS, and if c# replace js. That means all the toys libraries will be gone and we have to reinvents the wheel all over again.5

Hey hey Dev community.
Do any of you wise ladies and gentlemen out there know of a way to automate tasks? I have a list of clients names (198) but we dont have office addresses. We want to send out Christmas cards to all of our lovely clients rather than email but now need to gather physical addresses.
Any ideas?!11 -
I don't. I could've been a writer or a physicist for all I know. But when we started programming in high school I realised that I like doing it and I'm a quick learner with an affinity to maths so it felt relevant.

Man, at the rate I'm going, I'll have to put a bug I found back in April on my new years resolution list...

We are launching a new product soon. The C-levels have decided to call it "Foo Bar" (fictive name).
Now all our products are called:
"Foo Desktop"
"Foo Mobile"
"Foo Bar"
Nearly all internal & external reports previously was that "Foo" has problems. We nearly never know if they are talking about the desktop app or mobile app. Soon we will not know for sure if they report a problem about "Bar", Desktop or Mobile.
All 3 applications uses a different tech stack with their unique problems :') -

So while we all ranting about Mozilla fucking up, has anyone ever used a pi-hole?
If anyone who doesn't know what a pi-hole is, it's basically a blackhole for ads which works across all your devices in the network3 -
Keep your stuff up to date. always!
It'll save you a lot of work & headaches and time. and we all know, time=€€ so it might even save money.
Besides that it is just cool and very nice to work with the newer things -
We all know that one guy at work that explains and overshare stuff using a lot of jargons for the sake of using jargons at the daily scrum. Then it turns out, he's ranting about something so trivial, basically wasted a lot of time. And don't get started on meetings. Oh god. Please send help.1
-
The project needs to make bigger changes to a module. A guy starts doing the changes. It turns out that the task is bigger than we though originally. Team lead has a brilliant idea: you need help. So he'll assign couple of more guys to do the same change.
What's the catch? The catch is that we are now all changing the same files. The code is a mess and tweaks and hacks are needed all over the place. So basically one guy changes the files and others just watch YouTube and wait for him to commit. The it's your turn to change the files and the first guy watches PornHub.
You could all just try to edit the same files at the same time, but we all know how GIT feels about that. You change random lines, he changes random lines, someone else changes random lines, all merges go to shit, nothing works and we spend 2x more time on just trying to get it compiling again.2 -
Why some leaders are afraid of changes. Everything in the world change and adapt to the trend of responsibly remote working. We must count the productivity and not the negative impact of envious people that all they can do is sit down and pretending to be busy. We all know that the first step of success is to accept change.1

Goddam chair broke. Not a good time. A new chair is the kind of thing I'd usually like to take my time with. Looks like I'll have get a cheapy temporarily. But we all know that goes

I really don't know what to do when I can't get the help that we need.
We use the initial version of Jasmine for unit testing and AngularJS (not 2, 3, 4+, but 1), so it's hard to find any good examples online to create my tests. My coworkers help, but since testing isn't something we do at all (or at least very often), they are unsure on how to help me.
I don't know what to do. I feel very unproductive and not valuable to the company at this time.2 -
I've recently been promoted and I'm going from hourly to salaried. Amidst this crisis and the promotion I've gotten lost in the big changes and forgot to ask the simple questions.
When tf do I leave work if I'm not tracking my hours anymore? (Or for the near future, log off of work)
I know the general consensus is "when the work is done", but we all know the work is never truly done5 -
Seriously corp....who the hell thought is was going to be a good idea to try and cram together a Microsoft product with os....wtf. typescript has NO business being used with REACT. Ummm if ts doesn't know what push() is we are all f'ed

Not really a rant, but maybe someone can help me on this one.
Me and my brother are thinking about creating our first app. We know what features we want and also how the workflow of our app should be (we even sketched the workflow with an online mockup tool). The programming of the app itself is no problem, but we are both struggling when it comes to create a nice looking, smooth design from our draft. As we both believe that a nice looking UI is important we are not afraid to invest a little bit to get a nicely designed UI - "Make it right, or don't do it at all" ;-)
We searched a little bit in our hometown and found a company that would design us something for at least 15-20k Euros. As we do already have a pretty detailed sketch and also would need to pay that from our own pocket (we do not know if it gets more than a hobby project) its definitely too much for us. So my question is: Are their any app design companies out there that takes a sketch and creates a smooth design from it?4 -
This year we went to ChaosStack with my friends. It was fine, nothing special, we sucked, but we had fun.
However, last year I applied with a different team. We had a hard time deciding the technologies to do the selection task with, as we couldn't find a language that all three of us would know. We finally agreed on C++, which wasn't exactly the best tool for the job (calling rest apis) but at least we all knew it a little. We divided the work, agreed on texting one another if we can't solve something, and I thought we were done.
Fast forward 3 days before the deadline, I text them when we could meet to connect the things.
No response.
Next morning I learned that they left to a maths camp (that's been held on those exact days for the past 10 years) and wouldn't come back until after the competition. -
One person I work with thinks they know what they're doing but they have no idea, and we all know it and make fun of him behind his back.

How hard is to build the app store to stop all this nonsense ? I know ios is locked but at least we can stop google1
-
Just came across stackblitz dot com (guess we can’t post URLs yet womp womp, how about, I dunno, just letting it be text?!? Crazy I know) & I have a new 12.9 iPad Pro 1TB arriving tomorrow…
Time for an experiment to see if it can be at all feasible to actually develop on an iPad…3 -
Not too sure why I am required to be in the office when we all know the next code I will be writing is next year.2
-
Why do we all say "in production." How many people here use Elixir "in production." I don't know where I would use programming besides in the process of producing something. Why don't we say "In a live application?" (serious question)8

Tl;dr any tips for new scrum team ? How to start with story points with people that dont know eachother?
More:
Its for our team project at uni ( 8 people 1 year). Yesterday we had our first meeting and the hardest part was asigning story points. Or asigning some benchmark value for story point.
Looking for some practicall tips since uni gives us all the theory we need. ( Does not mean I know all the theory :D )6 -
democrats make it hard for businesses in the US but at least they acknowledge how rabid their country's capitalism is. I mean, damn, some more trump and it might fast track that cyberpunk dystopia we all know is at the curb10

Do you know about any Linux tools to migrate records from existing nameserver to a new (self-hosted) nameserver? We have multiple domains and it will be pain to migrate all of them manually. Thanks!7

I know that we all hate bugs, but let's be truthful, if there was no bugs, there was no jobs 😂
You will just have to program one time and then the boss will kick your ass out of the company3 -
So if people could just stop point out there are all these JavaScript frameworks out there. And yes, we know there are new JavaScript frameworks released every day. And yes, we know jQuery is the lamest thing anyone can think of. So if you frontend people could just stop telling me that every fucking time we talk about frontend I would be happy.

Little did we all know how much a life of throwing things together at the last minute would prepare us for this industry
-
We all know that writing your own css is easy.
Then we just try to pick up other's code and continue with their style...
It's taking so much time, I guess it's about collaboration now not only trying to figure it out alone .. -
When you get co-workers that rant all the time.. They say they know everything but can't seem to do anything right. Can we just relax and have fun at work.
-
One of our previous clients is not paying the rest of the payments after receiving the codes. What are the things we can/should do digitally to make them pay the payment?
btw, it was a web app. we worked on the front end and the backend of the app. So, naturally we know all the API endpoints, we have the database access, and so on. So yeah, we can do so many things.
But still I wanna ask you guys, what would you do to make someone pay?3 -
You know in the end we all keep taking shit because we’re not helping one another and because half the world is unclean and disconnected but mostly because we all get more and more frightened about what is next a fear which grows with time and is encouraged by people taking what a another person worked for or poisoning the well time
And time again -
We all know, that youtube suggestion feed + music just plain sucks. But.. seriously?
For the record - it's been 3rd time Im listening to this track, in a row, just focused enough I didn't notice at first.6 -
So prior to the realization or rather clear indication of what you all were, we had our heads filled with ideas of peace and accepting differences and other peoples cultures.
well all these people's fathers who are still laughing in hell said 'wait to you get to know these people'
and now wholesale slaughter looks like an enduring and solitary option
maybe don't post something referring to it as a stressball.5 -
There are people who develop Neural Networks/Deep Learning Models/AI based Softwares.
Does anybody know what do we call them? Is it okay to call all of them Machine Learning Engineer/AI researcher/AI engineer?
If I'm looking for someone who can make AI based program for me. Whom should I be looking for on freelancer or LinkedIn?1
