"You can teach my son to code. He doesn't like typing so just use that mouse thing (track pad). He's got an idea for an app (Flappy Birds clone) that'll make millions. It needs to be done tomorrow for his school computer project."
- Boss5 -
Friend(non dev): Hey. Do you know how much it costs to maintain an app?
Me : Well that depends. What are you planning to do?
Friend: Something like Trivago. But small.
Me: That still doesn't tell me anything
Friend: Come on. Just give a number. How hard can it be?
Me: 42. *facepalm*
Friend: See wasn't that hard. Was it?
Me: *thinking* Don't correct him. Just let him be.19 -
October - Hired
November - Hear that CEO 2 was stealing the company money
December - Dismissing 6 persons. CEO 1 says to me that, since I'm the last hired, I'll be the first dismissed.
March - Company doesn't get better. Dismissing 3 persons... still there.
May - Company doesn't get better. Dismissing 2 persons... still there.
July - Company doesn't get better. Dismissing 9 persons... still there.
Now, with the remaining money the company should live for about 2 years and not dismiss employees anymore.
We were 25 employees, where are 4 now. I feel like the winner of Survivor.10 -
YouTube recommendations are like when you tell your mom that you enjoyed a classical music concert, and the next day she has bought you a cello and signed you up for classes.
JUST BECAUSE I WATCHED ONE FUCKING DUMB COOKING SHOW, DOESN'T MEAN I WANT ALL MY CAREFULLY CURATED CONTENT ABOUT PROGRAMMING AND SCIENCE REPLACED WITH CELEBRITIES TRYING OUT VEGAN BARF WRAPS.11 -

The same fucking guy that said Java and JavaScript is the same thing tried inserting RAM into the PCIe slot twice! It doesn't even look like it will fit at first sight.8 -
So Nvidia doesn't let you use their GeForce Experience app anymore without logging in.
*Uninstalled*
Fuck that, I don't want to login so I can see an FPS counter in my ganes or record them to my local disk or something like that... Fuck you Nvidia and fuck whoever decided that would be a good idea.6 -
I'm still remembering that one time a friend of mine asked me to pass him the WiFi-cable.
I know, that sounds like a cliche, but it's getting better...
We are both information and communication engineering students...
I told him to think about what he just said and after some seconds of thinking he responded with "Oh yea, I forgot that my laptop doesn't have a WiFi Jack..."
He's passing most exams with distinction btw...1 -

I'm moving out soon and normally when the hallway is filled with stuff/boxes, the landlord doesn't like that and you might get a warning.
I take that quite seriously and thus always tried to keep it clean.
Now I'm moving in a few days, hallway is filled with stuff and the landlord told he doesn't like that at all.
I can't be bothered much, my new room is already available, good luck with kicking me out now 😋10 -
I'm sick of how much abuse PHP gets from other programming communities. PHP written well, using PHP 7 is comparatively quick. yes it has its quirks, just like JavaScript, but just because you can do stuff in multiple ways, and the language has a few inconsistencies doesn't make it a bad language. The recursive flag in bash applications changes case inconsistently (I.e. zip and cp) but that doesn't get bashed (lol) half as much....
I think I need to finish my coffee this morning29 -
Python -> indentation
HTML -> <!doctype HTML>
C++. -> int main()
PHP. -> <?php ?>
These are the fundamentals for some popular languages. Than there is this;
Lisp. -> ()
Like it doesn't give a fuck.
Not a single one.
I like that.11 -
A few of Stux's !dev pet peeves
1) People that walk slow as fuck in the middle of a side walk. Like hurry uppppp. I've gotta get 0.5 miles in like 8 minutes and you blocking the walkway doesn't help.
2) People that don't understand how side walks work. Treat it like the fucking road. ⬇️⬆️ Is the pattern in which you should walk. It's not rocket science.
3) People that start walking up the bus steps as I'm clearly walking forward to get off. Ffs let me off and THEN get on you stupid bitch
4) people that bike or ride their skateboard/longboard around campus but are moving slower than I am while walking. If you're gonna do that hop the fuck off and carry the damn thing.
5) people that don't try to solve an issue with their code on their own BEFORE they call the professor over. (There goes the !dev lol)
6) people that act like their favorite musician or athelete or actor or anyone fucking famous they play kiss ass with can't be criticized. Just bc they're famous and/or good at what they do sure asf doesn't make them perfection and I retain the right to voice my opinion.

My boss expects me to create an android application like Instagram just in 1 day ... 😂😂
it's terrible that your boss doesn't have any knowledge about programming...😥7 -
Linux is sooo offensive. I think we should replace the 'sudo' command with pretty_please or something like that. What if the PC doesn't feel like executing the command? At this point, sudo-ing can be considered rape.10

Disabling pasting into a password field in 2020 with password managers, is retarded. That's it that's the rant. Doesn't matter if you think password managers are good or not. Its still retarded that there's a 40 something year old dumbfuck manager who told a web designer at EA to disable pasting into a fucking password field because he was dumb enough to think it stopped hackers or some shit like that.14

"You're a programmer right? Can you fix my laptop?"
"Sure, lemme take a look but can't guarantee much since I'm not that familiar with windows"
"But you said you were a programmer?!"
Seriously, I haven't worked with windows properly in like seven FUCKING years!?! Being a programmer doesn't automatically mean that you know all operating systems 😡3 -
* Boss gives you a shitty work that doesn't follow standards
* you tell him that this is wrong, and there will be consequences on time and performance on the future.

*takes too long because of structure problems, and non compatibility
*you get blamed

Most humbling experience? Probably coming to the job that I currently have right now. The people I work with are fucking brilliant. I talk to this girl that is like 6 years younger than me and I feel DUMB. But I also realized that I have knowledge she doesn't. It really helped me to realize that education and experience are great, but everyone can teach you something.5

So as most of you know I was inspired to create a Minesweeper that allows continuing after you hit a mine.
Not sure if such a version existed before but... if it doesn't now it does.

Average linux developer: writes completely fast, optimized code that compiles the first time all via the terminal. He doesn't care.
Also average linux developer: decides to call it Winblows instead of Windows in an attempt to get more people to use linux. He feels like a genius.20 -
Me: Why dosn't cp return an error code when the file in the first argument doesn't exist?
Coworker: Well, you copied a file that doesn't exist to a destination that also doesn't exist, sounds like a successful copy to me.1 -
Coolest thing about platforms like devrant, is that it's so easy to get people to read what you have to say, and get them to notice you.
It doesn't matter if you have a nice profile picture, have a lot of friends/followers or anything like that.
The content is what matters.
Also, its not like everything here is developer related or is super nerdy, most of the stuff you see are normal things you'd expect people to post on things like Facebook when they want to be social and connect with people.
It's sad that this is not how most social media is done.7 -
"Your quote is too high, I will contact the old developer, as this would be quite easy for him!"
Alright, whatever - then 6ish months pass and suddenly the old developer said the same and since the other shit bartender doesn't want to do it "cheaper" he'd want it to have done properly, truly thinking of adding a tax to people that try to play games like that.1 -

Nothing quite like spending a day coding with a friend on a project way over your head and actually making progress and learning shit. That feel when you run your script and it gives a DIFFERENT error? Or when it doesn't even crash at all?? Or when it ACTUALLY WORKS?!
Absolutely magic.3 -
WordPress 'specialists' love to proclaim that 27 per cent of the web is powered by WordPress (which is incorrect anyway - https://rarst.net/wordpress/... ).
However, that doesn't mean it's the best CMS, like many try to suggest. It just means a huge percentage of websites out there are using the wrong tool for the job.30 -

I've been at my job for about 3 months now. They have me remaking a 10 year old site so that it's responsive and updated to HTML5. well the "senior developer" I'm working under doesn't know squat about responsive design and doesn't know that tags like font are deprecated so he's basically just copy pasting old code into bootstrap grid and calling that "updating the site". Lol did I mention he's still declaring the doctype as HTML 4 too? how did I get stuck here? -_-10

Currently developing an android app that is a clone for an existing iOS app. Sadly all the PMs and POs (the P-M/O fraction) at this firm are somehow iPhone users.
So every time we implement stuff according to android guidelines some PMO comes around and asks: "why doesn't this look/work/smell like in iOS?"
Somedays I feel like crying...6 -
Give everyone a chance
If someone in your company/workgroup doesn't know something basic that you might take for granted, don't undermine them and mock them.
Everyone has to learn and it just breaks morale and motivation.
Be humble and think that you're not any kind of God and think that you wouldn't like the same thing happening to you.
People who mock others for not knowing stuff just piss the shit out of me.
Be humble guys4 -
I hate sharing something that I made and that I think is super cool with my non-dev friends and then they're like "yeah so? doesn't look that hard."

I am once again reminded how much of a clusterfuck C++ as a whole is.
They recently (C++17) added this cool new attribute called nodiscard.
You can put it on a function like this
[[nodiscard]] bool writeMessage(...)
and the compiler will check if the returned value was discarded or not, and give a warning accordingly.
Pretty neat if you're returning an error code and you want to enforce that it gets checked, right?
Except it doesn't work in template classes.
It just doesn't do anything there.12 -
For once I would like to have a scrum master who doesn't try to be a psychologist and just helps us adhere to whatever methodology we are supposed to be following.
We are developers, we know we're dysfunctional, we like it that way and stop telling me I have to wear pants to meetings!!!1 -

Why do we backend people have to be born handicapped for creating anything that doesn't look like absolute shit.
I'm trying to pick a primary color for my landing page for about three days now and I'm starting to lose my shit.
Can we all just start using fucking CLI apps and be done with the whole design thing.13 -
Digitization in germany be like:
I sent a doctor some documents via E-Mail and i just saw how they printed to documents, then scanned them and then threw them away.
I asked why?
They said the system where they need the documents only allows to directly scan documents from a scanner and doesn't allow PDFs....
I just can't
That much paper waste because i sent them an email with like 30 pages of documents.19 -
Co-worker - "We need to have this added just like this, you should be able to do that right, it looks easy"

Thank you Google for reminding me that if I start my commute. RIGHT NOW. I can be at work in time for 07:24.

I LIKE TO NOT STRESS IN THE MORNING AND BE COOL AS A FUCKING CUCUMBER.8 -
Sad. Got a new job. Apparently, readable code is not a priority. My suggestions were being ignored. Does the benefits of condensing an if-else to a simple one-line return statement really that hard to understand? Does making clean and readable code should be an optional thing to consider? It doesn't help that I'm the youngest, they felt like I don't have enough street cred. I'm starting to hate my job.11

I can forgive some weirdness in generated html, but it is when generated html is combined with some plugins, and then a starting html dev who doesn't know what he's doing sprinkles some extras on top that you get frankenstein creatures like this.6

Did anybody else know that putting comments in your HTML creates an EMPTY TEXT NODE IN THE DOM?
REAL helpful information when you have to GATHER EVERY ELEMENT WITH TEXT INSIDE OF IT!
WHY WOULD HTML EVEN BE LIKE THIS? IT'S A COMMENT! WHY DOES IT HAVE ANY EFFECT, even if it's minimal, ON THE DOM WHATSOEVER, THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!4 -
My boss just asked me to participate in a conference call to help an external senior dev implement some stuff/tool into our website.
My boss suspects that he doesn't even know Git...
Let's see how that whole thing will turn out.
My boss told me that he looked at his code and it already looks like an abomination of PHP...
It is enough that my boss usually writes shitty spaghetty code.
I will not sleep well this night.1 -

Still fail to see why people give a fuck if you're self taught or have a degree. (By people I mean other developers, not employers.)
Why does it matter? Trick question: it doesn't matter. All that matters is their code.
And fun fact: both educated and self taught people can write shitty code.
Idk it just seems like unnecessary division in a group of people that all do the same fucking thing: program.29 -
Some more of Stux's !dev pet peeves
1) Teenagers who comment shit like "I'm from the wrong generation" or "today's music is trash. This is real music" on songs from like the 70s and 80s. Like shut the fuck up. You can like whatever music you want, but your taste in music doesn't make you unique, so just shut the fuck up and listen to the music. I was jamming out to 70s and 80s when I was 9, so you aren't the first to enjoy older music at a young age
2) "Old heads" who comment shit like "this isn't real *genre*" on a new song that isnt like the older version of that genre. News flash: music fucking evolves. Just because that country song doesn't have a twangy guitar in it, that doesn't mean the song ain't country. Just because the rap song ain't some deep ass poetic shit, it doesn't make it any less of a rap song.
3) People who edit their comments on YouTube to say shit like "wow thanks for all the likes, I wasn't expecting this." Wooptie fucking doo. Your comment got a few thousand likes. Fun fact: those likes are meaningless.
4) Humidity. Fuck that shit man.
5) General education classes. They're a fucking pain in the ass man. Like im 98% confident I don't need art history in the real world. Or mythology. "tHeY tEaCh YoU tO lEaRn." Teach me to learn in degree specific classes then. At least their content will be interesting to me.

Some websites are a disgrace to the internet and I wish there was a service that terminates them on a daily basis.
Really though, can you do some simple research about your users and see what will make their life easy?
You put the most important button of your website in a place where the I have to scroll down and looks for it. The beginning of your page has a stock picture that has no meaning or relevance to the topic of your page. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?
And your button, it doesn't even look like a fucking button. It looks like a normal text, which doesn't even react to hovering. At least change the cursor to pointer so that I can understand that it's a button.
Fuck you, your button and your useless stock picture.3 -

Today on forgotten movies – Chronicle.
A very grim, very dark movie about accidental superpowers discovery, but with some school-shooter vibes.
Don't you find it predictable how in regular movies a hero saves the world against all odds in the very last moment? Well, forget about it here – this movie is not "cinematic" at all, and that's what I like about it.
A horror in regular movies doesn't usually scare because the image itself is too perfect – you don't usually see the world like this. It doesn't seem real, that's the problem. By adopting the "found footage" screen language, Chronicle delivers the horror perfectly, because the world in it seems perfectly real, just like you see it through obscure youtube videos named MOV_0115 or IMG1014.
I like it that the characters actually look like real people, not like stereotypical superheroes and not even like enhanced versions of people that try to sell you an idea of what "success" looks like.
People in the movie also act real. They're weak, they're scared, they're irrational, and you really start to believe that yeah, this is what probably gonna happen when a human faces something as unbearable as superpowers discovery. And, as weird as it sounds, the superpower itself also looks totally real – raw, unpolished, uncontrollable force that requires getting used to and probably is too much for a regular human. Definitely not a perfect, tailored thing that turns anyone into Mary Sue.
Overall, this movie is the most immersive one I've ever seen. If you want to see what would really happen if you discover a superpower, this movie is for you.4 -
Scrum is terrible. Is there another agile technique that isn't as bad? Like maybe one that will let us do our "scrum" once a week for like an hour? My current project really doesn't lend itself to once a day scrums. Literally my scrum input is "I worked on what I have been working on, and I'm gonna work on it more today. Impediments are literally the same as they always are because my life is no longer my own."5

OK I've just got an idea that I think would be quite neat:
How about a virtual rubber duck that sits in the corner of your editor? Just like the gem in old Word, if you remember. It's yellow and quacks sometimes, and nods understandingly when you talk to it (mic monitoring).
And it also monitors your typing and says (popup text bubble) things like:
"those parentheses doesn't look balanced to me"
"did you really initialize that variable?"
"you wrote JASON again"
"you forgot the ;"
You get the point.
I don't have time to implement, feel free to steal my idea and become a millionaire.5 -

Quick tip: ! means NOT. So !rant is a post which isn't a rant. !question doesn't indicate that the post is a question, but rather the opposite (and therefore there isn't really a need for that tag). You might also see something like !!rant which is the same as writing rant (that tag is also unnecessary, considering the name of the app)7

WTF is this shit? Multiply by 0 * Math.pow(2,0) upto Math.pow(2, 10).
Like why the fuck would you write that and not write a comment as to why that logic and explain everything else. Fucking fuck.
Turns out this logic is supposed to mimic the back end logic of breaking the flag value into binary and then set other flags depending on each bit. But why would you do that? I was starting to doubt if 0*n = 0.
This piece of code is inefficient, trying to be smartass, doesn't explain shit and doesn't have the only comment that mattered.1 -

The problem with him is that he constantly reminds me of the things that I should be doing and he seems like he wants the thing to be done all himself. Basically, he doesn't trust me that I could deliver whatever he asks me to do. He keeps on micromanaging me from time to time and he seems like he wants to control my life altogether! Fuck this.
Oh and another, whenever he asks for opinion, whatever you say doesn't even fucking matter. He dismisses it immediately anyway and goes with whatever he thinks.
Seriously, fuck this!!! I can't keep calm and I need to constantly check on my posture! (Forgot the right term...) Uhhhh halp5 -
Our company is cheap, cheap as fuck. We have to use some third-party platforms and every year they choose something that is slightly cheaper than the other. (like a few $ per annual), they do not know that we have to refactor our code at the backend because the changes of the platform.
It doesn't end there, they even look for devs from third world countries to work for them remotely instead of hiring permanent staff (I understand it is cheaper because of currency difference and etc), but what about the training period or to let them become comfortable with the existing system, even when he/she is a genius... it takes time to be productive at work.
The worst part is they dont give a shit, they think devs can be replaced easily just like some construction workers carrying stuffs on site (no offence to them), management treating people like shit and doesn't care when they leave.2 -

Why is every company so BAD at working with spaces in passwords? Just trying to setup Hulu on my PS4, apparently I forgot my password? No, my password had a space in it. So maybe Hulu's just one of those companies that doesn't allow spaces in passwords? Wait no, I can log in with no problems on my Switch or PC with the space. It's just SPECIFICALLY the PS4 app that doesn't allow spaces. Cool cool cool.
Like, am I missing something? Is there some reason it's harder to hash than other characters? It's just an ASCII character, it's not like I'm copy/pasting in some fringe unicode shit. Some companies straight up ban it. Some like Amazon don't recognize it as a special character, while demanding I use a special character. Why is this so terrible?4 -

If you're going to add unnecessary white space to code, at least keep it consistent. And by consistent, I mean learn to write code that doesn't look like you pair programmed with a toddler who had a hour long tantrum on the damn spacebar.2

HAHA! Google just got fined 4.34bn EUR by the EU! According to the EU they forced manufacturers to preinstall their search app and browser. In my opinion, a fine like this is a nice statement, but doesn't really affect a company that makes 111bn US$ per year. I think there needs to be proper taxation for GAFA!
What do you guys think?10 -
I spend the whole day decoding Assembly code for special formulas that we require for a current project.
And the client doesn't have them anywhere else.
There's only that old desktop application - written in assembly.
My Pc and I never felt so close before...
If it sounds like it was fun, it wasn't.
NOT. AT. ALL.1 -
People talk about how the use of Linux as a desktop requires an inordinate amount of time, as if that's a unique problem in Linux. There is no such thing as an operating system that I don't spend weeks and months tweaking to make my own.
The difference is that Linux doesn't resist me like other OSes.2 -
Had given my laptop at the repair store. They were just suppose to do a checkup and then give a choice on whether to repair or not. They repaired it and charged me 2.8K. No unit replacement or anything, just service. I didn't mind it (was actually happy seeing my laptop boot up and not have a blank screen). It's a dual-boot (Windows/Antergos(Arch-linux)). It booted to Windows instead of GRUB. Didn't care too much, because it had happened before and I had handled it.
After I take it back home, I discover that the WiFi doesn't work (it doesn't even seem to be a driver issue). Live boot of arch doesn't have access to WiFi either. Reinstalled GRUB, only to discover it doesn't boot successfully (issues with video card). So, now I'm stuck with fucking Windows WITHOUT WiFi and an arch-linux that doesn't fucking boot.
Gonna reinstall Arch now.
P. S. : Windows is super fast, because I haven't really used it and don't really like using it. I feel very limited by Windows.8 -
An interface is like a pm. It defines the tasks that need to get done, but doesn't know and care about how to do them; if they're getting done they're happy.

Nothing more depressing than a response like "No, no, no, we can't remove this old code. It doesn't matter that there's 0 references as of 3 years ago"3

Ok, so I REALLY HATE ChromeOS. MY story is this: I'm using Chrome, and I want to get a file from my computer to my phone. Simple enough, I just plug my phone in, and... oh, wait! First it has to open two new windows for my phone's two storage areas. Ok, fine. I close the windows, get my file prepared, and I click/drag it over to the folder I want. Except, the computer doesn't FUCKING see it as a device anymore. It knows it's attached, but it doesn't fucking communicate with it. Ok, maybe it's a cord problem. Nope! Same issue. Maybe I need to update? Nuh-uh! That doesn't work either, since my computer's not supported anymore! And, the cherry on the top of the fucking shitcake that this whole situation is, the Files app, the one that you use to view the stuff on your hard disk? OH, IT JUST GOES AND CRASHES. I can open it! Nothing shows up. No devices work. It's just stuck like that until I reboot my machine.
God... FUCKING damnit, chromeOS.12 -
I love how odd very intelligent things can (seem to) be. Cryptography is incredibly complex, and the reason the computer was created in the first place. But that doesn't stop them from being all

I wanted a few days off from classes, but not like this man. Fucking hell I hope it doesn't take the power out for too long or destroy anything important (like people).6 -
So enlighten me here. Am I the only one that doesn't lose his absolute shit when it comes to privacy?
I know that some companies are collecting data, and to a certain extent, I'm fine with it as long as the trade-off is good.
I like that Google is "learning" who I am and what I like, cause now, I only see news and articles relevant to my interests, and search predictions are much better. Same with targeted Ads. On an off chance that I'm not using Adblock I like seeing products that I might like, which I otherwise probably wouldn't even know existed.
Except for Microsoft. I have no idea why, but that's where I draw the line.96 -
What was wrong with the major updates and clean modern UI? It was the only reason that made us happy.
Now buggy and not surprising minor updates, doesn't really support touch like 8.1, poor animations, poor etc. that looks like a quick without-love development to just "release quickly".
Anyways, who else liked the modern metro UI in 8.1 and sad about going back to traditional desktop on win10?48 -
Isn't it a bit weird that a site like devRant exists?
Doesn't it show the underlying problem with developing software and what it does to the human mind?
A lot of people seem to share the same feelings and are able to relate with the most common negative experiences over here.
Why is it that way and is the society we live in even aware of it?8 -
In one big project I made in past (when I was new developer) every ajax call execute code which looks like: dbquery("SELECT * FROM table WHERE something='".$_POST['value']."'");
That project doesn't exist now (thank god)1 -
Ublock orgin the improved version of adblock, access less RAM and filters better than adblock.
Reason I'm posting this, is that I saw a post about adblock and how some people really don't like it anymore as it doesn't block all of the ads like it used to.
Just hoping to save some people from malicious popups/annoying ads.2 -
I've just come to realize that in all the time I ran Netdata on my servers, it was nightly releases, automatically updated too.. that somehow never really broke. Not even minor issues.
I really like that... Moving fast doesn't always have to imply breaking things. I wonder how they're doing it.2 -
Treat software development like a trade. Because it is one.
Would you hire someone to build a shed for you if you needed to supply the hammer and saw and they needed to read a "How to Build Sheds" book to just get started? No, you wouldn't.
So why would you hire someone that doesn't have any kind of ready-to-go dev environment?
Why would you hire someone that doesn't understand the basics of this field?
Why do you expect employees to stop what they are doing and teach the new guy everything he should already know, or be able to figure out on his own based on his own experience?23 -
Describing a friend's project to a friend:

"Why doesn't he just copy tinder?"
"Er... wat?"
"You know, just copy their code and put it in his app."
"You don't... you can't... I mean you can decompile... but that's not useful because... it just doesn't work that way. For a million reasons. I don't know where to begin."3 -

Today I went into the 1 holer restroom right after my boss. I braced myself for the worse as the toilet seat was down. To my surprise it smelled like bubble gum. So my boss's shit doesn't stink, it smells like bubble gum.

*set up tech interview with a dev*

I sent followup email, asking if we needed rescheduling - no response
I don't understand why I was ghosted like that, at least they could've sent a message to reject me or something? Seemed like a waste of time.5 -
I've been trying to get my job to start using Git cause they currently don't use any version control. So today I told my supervisor that I was going to set us up our server so we can host our own repositories and he was like no need we will just set your computer up so you can vpn in from home. I'm like wtf? why go through so much trouble to set that up? That still doesn't solve the problem of accidental file overwriting.-_-3

Do not use a "debugger".
A debugger is like doing a full-body scan of a sick person. You do not get any specific useful information, and you find a whole lot of information that doesn't help and is just confusing.

I like how a co-worker is expecting a Windows Container to work in Linux, and vice versa.
No, it doesn't work like that you fucking baffoon, Linux rootfses needs the Linux kernel (hence why it runs on WSL2 or Hyper-V using LCOW), and same can be said for Windows Containers.
How dumb of a human being must you assume everything should "just work" in a container?5 -
We have a customer that doesn't have a SINGLE linux admin. So now I have to fight with Docker EE on Windows Server 2019 (linux containers). Just fucking kill me already. But wtf do I expect from someone that STILL sells SAP and from someone that is stupid enough to buy it.2 -
Dunno who it was, but not cool posting a rant about how Windows doesn't allow creating extension-only files like ".htaccess" through Explorer and then deleting the whole thing right after I give him answer that it's possible if you simply name it ".htaccess."

Am I the only one that doesn't like Java? I mean I don't hate it or say it's bad. It's pretty clear that it has been probably the most influential language after C. I just don't like how typed and verbose it is, also I feel old just using it or something based on it (like Jenkins)13

How do you teach non-technical coworkers to trust you're doing your work to the best of your ability? You know the type, they're used to having everything measured by simple numbers. Stupid stupid stupid API that returns a 204 on failed validations.
Informative docs? Hell no! Here's a few hundred long-ass field names that you need to pass as a JSON.
Doesn't work huh? Yeah, you're structure's all wrong. Some of these are grouped in vaguely named keys like "Wholesale".
Oh you need those as well? Yeah, you can see the whole structure if you try to GET an object.
Oh you need an ID to GET an object? Yeah you can just go ahead and create as many as you want. This is just a sandbox API, it's cool.
Oh that's not the point? Ahh you need the structure to be able to create one! *haha* Right, I'll get back to you on that.
* Email correspondence over 2 weeks time. I have still yet to be able to make a an actual successful request. The fucking 204 doesn't count if it doesn't actually create the resource.
Fucking fucky fuckity fuck fuck fuck.
I swear to god if I ever meet this guy in person, I will probably buy him coffee or beer and have a long talk about how to build proper REST APIs.

Great googly moogly is Kotlin an ugly language.
If you are just starting out with Android or Java development in general, I highly recommend sticking with Java and avoid Kotlin like the plague. It feels like a meme language that was taken a little too seriously.
Full of little flowery nonsense that aims to make the language more human, but only serves to make it look like a child designed it.
I absolutely hate when a language doesn't require type declarations.
The "it" keyword rankles my underwear beyond belief.
Trying to build a dictionary/hashmap/hash felt like I was writing out an essay for school. In other languages it's straightforward and makes sense. Even PHP makes more sense.
I am obviously missing something here, because there is no way something so common and done the same way across different languages has such a wildly different approach in Kotlin.
I have as much experience with Java as I do Kotlin but it immediately makes more sense as a language and doesn't have all this flowery nonsense. It is verbose, which means I don't have to decipher what the code is actually doing when I read it.
I'm familiar with the enterprise Java meme, but I'm not writing enterprise Java, and that's not my style anyway so it doesn't affect me. But even so, that would be a million times easier to handle that Kotlin.14 -
Some """friend""" of mine asked me help because he has trouble installing WAMP on a Linux distro.

Oh great, now garbage websites can even break the browser's reload button. Wanna reload the page that never stops loading or crashes its scripts? Click the button and watch the browser do fuck all and a little bit of nothing.

Anyone draw out the logic of a process by hand before coding much?
I've been doing that more and more, and it's handy but ... it's also kinda tedious making them on paper or even just in the VS Code extensions I've tried.
I'd really like a way to bust out quick flow charts in VSCode and there's a Draw.io add on and it's ok but lotta fidgeting with flow chats and dragging stuff.
It doesn't have to be pretty and it doesn't have to be super feature rich.... just want to quick bust out a series of steps flow chart style or ... hell any way fast and visual like.
Anyone use anything they really like?11 -

Github is creating nice quality movies on YT. But the content itself, to vomit from it. AI this, AI that. It's like 100% advertisement. I would like to call out the moron who decided to control docker through HTTP when the maximum time the server can take to finish the task is longer than the HTTP timeout.
If you expect things might time out, you don't use a HTTP request. You use a resource and poll it, or Websockets, or possibly SSE.
Shoehorning your API into a frame that obviously doesn't fit doesn't help anyone. Just admit that you don't know what HTTP is and use a regular TCP socket with regular pings.2 -

Am I the only one who actually thinks Edge is actually significantly better than other browsers?
Like right now with 2 tabs open it's only using 17MB and it doesn't have any ridiculous features like an inbuilt video chat (looking at you Firefox). It's just simple and good at being a browser...
I like that in my browsers...10 -
Have you ever felt like your company is just some shell company, making meaningless projects to feed someone's appetite of bossing people around so that it doesn't look bad in taxes because he's paying himself with the salary and we don't even know what's connected to what and noticing weird relationships like some workers are of the same family members, who are also project managers but your salary is okay enough to keep your mouth shut?5

Saw lots of regret posts about being in dev field. Then why bother living that way?
Not like engineering, medicine or business management fields, I believe programming needs passion similar to art related careers like acting, music and painting etc. So if you don't have any passion for programming, you won't be successful or satisfy at all.
That doesn't mean it is all good and happy days for every passionate programmers. We sure have ****ed up days (probably more than other fields.) Seriously that's why we have devrants. No? But it doesn't reach to the point of regret to me.
Here our national programming language is probably PHP. The pays are lower than your part-time fast food chain workers. The internet speed is in kbs with 2 digits most of the places. Government doesn't give a crap about IT. No IP copyright laws and so on. I probably would earn more and live better if I were not running this IT business.
But hell yeah I never regret at all.1 -

I don't have many regrets in life but one would be that I didn't learn something harder at uni. I should have picked something like CS or cryptography or something like that. Even flat out math or physics would have been super useful.
On the other hand, the finance stuff I now see as common sense doesn't seem so common after all so there's that, and it helped me too.
I learned economics with specialization in finance btw2 -

I'm sure they have thought of this, so why does it take so fucking long to wake up your computer.3 -

I really like the concept of a "hackerspace" but they are far away from my flat and after working all day I don't really wanna travel across the city for hours to try things for an hour or two because I need to catch the train on time to get at least a bit of sleep.
I'm thinking of a "digital hackerspace" where ppl can "meet" and write code or build something(?). Does something like this exist?

Just met with country brand manager of famous MNC automobile brand. They have their brand website for our country. He doesn't know any information and doesn't have any information regarding the website nor domain. He has been there for 2 years already and the website was made when the brand came to our country. So now he is stuck with that stupid ugly and most of all out-dated website.
So my point is, why the fuck did business people think domain and server information are less important and doesn't need to keep it documented and confidential?
Ok forget about server. They have to at least be very very careful with the domain name which they use it everywhere everyday.
What if it was some sick bastard like me who bought that domain and made that website? I could drop their butt ugly pages and put some animals seriously making love video up there.1 -
Fuck. I really hate it when someone has a domain I'd like to have, and doesn't do shit with it. Come on! A webpage that says "Live soon"?!
It's like having a subscription to the gym and never go to the gym. Total waste of money and opportunity for someone else to use the domain, just for the sake of "There is the slightest possibility that I maybe want to do something with this domain in the future".
Fuck this shit.3 -
first time working with android. using threads debugging is not working like it should. app works great when I'm not debugging. code doesn't get executed WTF i really need that stressball FML

I've been working as a developer for 10 years now... I got my first software development job when I was still learning for my masters.
After all this time I have switched programming languages and product types a few times from web development to mobile apps to desktop software (C++, CEF, QT,).
And I have come to the conclusion that I want early retirement... like right now retirement... I'm done dealing with management that doesn't understand shit... dealing with people we have outsourced part of the shit to... needing to fix stuff that is broken after some other person refactored the code and didn't fully test it and it somehow got approved... dealing with people that think that "know better" and implemented things like that 5 years ago because they thought like "THAT" and will not accept my merge request because of that.
Like don't get me wrong I love to make and develop software, but since this is the 3rd job in the row with a toxic environment like this I feel like I need to move to the country side and open up a farm or something :|2 -
I'm trying to convince my dad to switch to the Linux. Everyday he complains about his laptop being slow (although it has pretty much same specs like my laptop), the forced updates on Windows 10, how long it takes to load programs and stuff. He only uses Opera and LibreOffice for work, he doesn't have iPhone so he's not locked by iTunes. Perfect case study!
Yet every time I tell him that Linux doesn't force updates on you, runs faster and has all the software he needs, he says that "he's not a programer like I am". Then I reply to him "and that's a thing! Linux Mint for example doesn't even require to open terminal" (plus few years back he wanted to try it out)...
Any tips boys and girls? Should I give up or not? I mean, forcing the change will not do, but I also don't want to hear complains about Windows every day.12 -
Why do people get an idea that Ctrl+Alt+[character] is a good combination for keyboard shortcuts? Just because your keyboard layout doesn't have a special character for Ctrl+Alt+Z, it doesn't mean other people don't! Did you ever stop to think that more than half buttons on your keyboard already have a Ctrl+Alt (~AltGr) binding, so maybe, just fucking maybe, other keyboard layouts could have that kind of bindings for other buttons as well? You've got 38 published works, you boast your years of experience, yet you can't fucking consider some basic real-world problems when working on a piece of software!
God I fucking hate people like these, with their PhDs and no actual hands-on experience, they're always so smug about their work and expect you to pay them millions, but fail to understand that details like those are why people pick you instead of some cheap student, and that's where their salary comes from.7 -
Well AI is made by some developer so why not just swing with the technology. When JavaScript Framework because famous (jQuery, Ionic, React) we started using them like an asshole. Similar way when AI takes over, let's switch to AI.
All I wish is that AI doesn't fuck my girlfriend/wife. I will implement very strict rules.1 -
When your partner decides right as you are able to sleep is the time to be worrying. No that freckle on your arm doesn't look like a bed bug bite. You've obviously never seen a bedbug bite. Now I have to look them up on Google to prove I'm correct. ಠ_ಠ4

So, in C#, are there any tips or guidelines as to how to write "clean" multiline strings? I mean, imo it doesn't look as neat when the code looks like:
static string kindOfLongVariableName = @"First line of string.
Second line of string...";
With the first line sort of hovering on the side. What I'm used to is with Python where you can just:
variable_name = """'\
First line.
Second line.
"""
And use the '\' to escape the newline, but that obviously doesn't work in C#. Can anyone point me in a direction to start looking? The docs are a bit confusing and not very beginner friendly. :/20 -
Is this a technological metaphor?
For some Hacker challenge I was reading up on different keyboard layouts, Dvorak and stuff. And the technological lock in is baffling me: The rationale for qwerty was to reduce jamming of the typewriter letter arms. Today that doesn't make sense anymore, yet we stick to it. Wondering how much of today's tech is dragged down by things like that.
This stuff often also makes me weary of the first decisions, like choosing a protocol or data base - its kind and layout, because we might be stuck with it for reasons of backwards compatibility.... Like when Microsoft opted for the backslash as a directory separator..25 -
Finally end of the week. All that is left is a little polishing over the weekend for Monday release. Like get the lastest code from all the developers, put it together and hope it somehow works and fix whatever doesn't :-/
-
Okay, I realize that it doesn't mean anything, but I've been working on trying to solve this freaking Codility challenge for like a week and while I had a solution that would give me a silver award (the tests that weren't performance-based had me getting the right results, I just timed-out for performance tests), I really wanted to get a gold one. And I FINALLY DID.

Just in time for having to do a technical phone screen for a company. Maybe I'll go into it feeling like a competent programmer.7 -
I get it. Functional code is still kind of considered the "new hotness" in languages like Java, but THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU NEED TO CRAM IT IN EVERYWHERE FOR THE SAKE OF IT. If in doubt, *please* go for the simpler, classic option...
Just inherited a code base that's full of things like this:
Optional.of(getResult()).filter(s -> s.equals(true)).ifPresent(s -> callService());
Optional.of(getResult()).filter(s -> s.equals(false)).ifPresent(s -> logError());4 -
Im on a Team Project on my University, I'm so salty because a girl on my team yesterday got angry with me because I committed when she was working on something, and that she doesn't like how I code.
2 hours later she made a giant commit with so many unnecessary code and removed working functionality and changed to a nonsense interface all because she was mad with me, now the code doesn't work and it's ugly and she is mad.
I cannot handle it 😭3 -
I hate the word "Proactive"
What does that even mean? You add the prefix pro- to the word "active" and you get the same thing! Why not just say active?!
We're talking an active approach
We're taking a proactive approach
See, they mean the same thing and the first version doesn't make you sound like a douche.12 -
Budgie up and running. Tho, I had an issue overload cpu, and stopped previews-creator. Is that even safe?
Anyways, half of my customized deepin shit doesn't work properly anymore. It's a piss off. Wondering if a downgrade would help.
If shit stops breaking for six more months, I might be able to finish uni and go back to workforce properly, where cash-cash-dollar can buy me a new laptop, or a workstation that allows me to duck around with current laptop.
Like, being a student again has been so unnerving. Won't do it ever again. (a PhD doesn't count as study 😜)2 -
I've got a bit funny situation.
I wanted to make small application to speed up my dad's job, app is about duplicating models in X website (I don't want to say directly what website).
So I started by checking it has API, Yup, It has, but you need OAuth ID, to get it you need to write to support.
So I did it, my mail was something like that: "Hello, can I get access to your API, I want to make app to duplicate models with same settings, Thanks"
I've got an answer like that "Hello, our website doesn't have duplicating feature."
My reaction was: Wtf? I know it doesn't have that feature, That's why I want to make it. How did he get hired as technical support?
Maybe it's not the most exciting story, but I thought it could be intresting :) -
No no no, that's not for what I came to linux.
Opened couple of tasks including one browser with < 10 tabs, sublime, skype and it starts fucking hang.
I have 8g ram, core i3 .
I'm using Ubuntu 16 lts. Its such a shame6 -
I'm building an app with Cordova and everything was working great, tested on multiple devices and everything worked perfectly. Until my boss called me to say that some interfaces don't work on his phone. Needless to say Android 4.3 doesn't like the "new" syntax of flex and just tells me that I can fuck off. Well Android fuck off too.2

Are we at the point where the MVP of every dev app (at the very least) should have a dark mode?!
I have seen app reviews that literally said: "Great app! Love it! Giving a 4 because it doesn't have dark mode!"
Like wtf!!!!!5 -

WCF doesn't like me adding to lists...
I have to make an uno game that supports multiplayer with WCF for school...
I have a player class that has a list of card classes.
I have a function called dealHand, it adds Cards to the hand list...
I also have a callback function for updating my wpf gui...
For whatever reason if when the gui calls dealhand and I try to use myList.add(new Card()) then the updategui function in my wpf client doesn't fire...
But if I take a seperate method called makeHand which returns a list of cards, and just do myList = makeHand() then that works fine...
Never been so baffled/cursed so much at code before... Is there something about Lists that WCF doesn't like? Seriously... was weird...
Hopefully that was somewhat coherent...4 -
I have a bunch of text files from writing that I did in a copy of DOS software called WordPublisher from 1992. When I open them in TextEdit or Sublime on a Mac, there are a bunch of special characters, some of the readable text, and then more special characters. The software just doesn't exist anywhere in any format now. Anyone know how I can recover the full text from a file like that?31

Anyone that has careless coworkers on a common project? Like my stuff is ready, working and tested, meanwhile many are still scratching their heads on why their code doesn't work.
//we are a group of internship workers2 -
I keep phones for two years, or try to anyway. Later this year I will hit that two year mark, and rather than excitement at the idea of getting a new phone, I find myself thinking that there's nothing out there that excites me at all. And also, my current phone is in no way deficient. It doesn't hold a charge like when it was new, but that's totally normal, and as degraded as it may be, it's still not a problem at all.
A powerful phone with a snapdragon and 6 or more GB of memory, that measures under 5" and doesn't have some bullshit OEM skin on it. To my knowledge, it doesn't exist.6 -

I hate that feeling when I say "I think I could fix it" and eventually accepting that I have to ask for help, and maybe pay for it. That feeling tastes like defeat, and it's the same way people feels when they need my services. I think this should help me be more sympathetic with clients, but it doesn't.

fuck me.
it's monday and to start in a new project I'm reading a paper my boss once wrote.
It's the worst I ever seen - stop using so much smart words and stop introducing fuckin smart math notations everywhere!!!

If boss doesn't like you, what would you do ?
1- try to make him happy with your work?
2- search for new job.
p.s boss insulting too much after anything goes wrong.
What is the professional way to deal with that kind of situation?14 -
I am I the only one who doesn't like sprint demos? I don't care what someone else worked on. Yeah they wrote some code that does stuff, great. I don't have time to understand it and when I have to fix it I learn it.

I would get a testing job and thus exploit weaknesses in the ai- created software.
After finding such weaknesses, I would write AI debilitating viruses and WannaCry-like ransomware until I get my job back!
If that doesn't work out, I'd go into linguistics.1 -
Doesn't it suck that we still need to write an app multiple times for different operating systems? I mean for me it seems like how the web was a decade ago. I think we deserve better!
While there are cross-platform frameworks, I feel like the OS vendors must work together to make native development less of a pain in the ass.8 -
Do you ever feel like no matter how much money you earn it just.. doesn't seem enough because you see certain people around you who earn even more? Whenever i hear my in-laws say 'oh that guy earns this much, this guy earns this much', i feel kinda low...19

At the end of the day...does the end consumer REALLY give a shit about what language you program in? As long as the app fucking does what it's supposed to right? I feel like this is a never ending rant for me because it seems like programmers will never understand that it doesn't matter as long as the end consumer / client is happy.2

I crash and burn during coding interview questions. Every. Time.
I just do. It's terrible. It doesn't matter how much I tell myself to slow down and just think it through first before coding...I end up coding first after a short period of thinking about it. Don't get it right, freak out...and well I crash and burn.
It bums me out. The worst part is that I'm so distraught about it that I take a break, and sit down and solve it in like 10 minutes...of course it doesn't matter since it happens after the interview.
I just need to practice solving these things to get that mindset right.3 -

Yes I've won a few coding contests. Yes I've emulated clusters using Docker and Kubernetes. Doesn't mean that I can simulate machine learning over network like taking knife out of butter2 -

The current project I'm on makes me want to switch careers.2 -
I like many Apple products but if there's a thing I hate about that company its their aspirational marketing: they doesn't sell computers, phones, tablets, earbuds and stuff anymore, they want to sell you a "perfect lifestyle" (perfect from the perspective of Californian tech-bros) where you'll be super fit, super organized, devour self help content like no tomorrow while taking pixel perfect notes, do mindfulness and breathing exercises, juggle 5 social events a day... and all it takes to achieve that is buying "just one more device".8

A Fresher in my company stated he'd like to get into CyberSecurity. I offered him mentorship, however his motivation and drive doesn't really line up with this interest. If I stop reaching out and pushing him, this whole thing would probably just die silently. Or is there a cultural gap between USA and India that I am missing?8

So I was asked to delete the previous posts because my friend didn't like having his name published... even though I pointed out that there are 100s of people with the same name.... his doesn't even show up in the first page of Google results...
But anyways, here's the C# app if anyone want's it. Maybe can help me fix some bugs... but I'm pretty much done I think unless I need another WhatsApp bot for some reason... It does what I wanted it to do and I've had my fun.
Although WhatsApp seems smart... after like 1 hour if the other person doesn't respond, the messages seem to go to nowhere... just see 1 check instead of 2.

Am I the only one that doesn't think purely data-oriented programming is a particularly good idea?
I mean we're throwing out all the principles that have been established over the last 20 years of OOP like encapsulation and implementation hiding. And you can say what you want about OOP and yes it's not perfect, but there are things that work quite well. Implementation hiding is a perfect example of something that I don't think I just want to give up.
DOP feels like going back to programming C in the 80's with fully procedural functions and completely open structs.
Am I just going mad?6 -
Me: The client is getting hosting from a different company than we suggested since they require you to pay via bank and she doesn't consider that safe.

Fuckin damn it Google! I setup a transparent proxy and for some fucking reason Google home doesn't like that at all. I think I have a fix but it's a real fucking pain in the ass. I call your support people who I specifically tell that I'm running a fucking proxy and they tell me that I need to talk to their Google WiFi team. It has nothing Todo with my fucking wifi bitch. Its your price of shit price of crap hardware that doesn't like fucking proxies.
I'll update everyone what the fix is when I find it.
Btw, this is a HTTPS transparent proxy and HTTP transparent proxy running on my pFSense firewall box.5 -
So my friends USB drive suddenly doesn't work. It shows up in Windows' device manager (with no exclamation sign) but not in My Computer or even Disk Management (So I can't partition it) Reinstalling drivers doesn't work either. When trying to mount it in Linux, Linux complains that it can't see the drive. fsck and gparted don't read it either, but it shows up in lsblk. Dmesg complains it can't read the partition table (error -110). Any of you guys have bright ideas? Nothing like this has shown up in SO before so I've asked in both here and SO. Any ideas?12

Our systems lead is trying to tell our software person how much adding unit tests would cost. It also sounds like he wants TDD to be added in after the fact. And he's bitching because the software guy won't move forward with it until we get it with the customer. He also wants all of them automated, but doesn't want to accept that that is going to cost a lot. Like a lot, a lot. This is a guy who doesn't know algorithms (had to explain dykstra to him), doesn't understand the tech stack we are using (I had to explain .net versions, the JIT compiler, and garbage collection to him), and seems not to understand hardware (I had to explain floating point math to him), yet he feels qualified to tell us how long it is going to take us to implement automated unit tests for major, complex features.

The best thing about SkyRant is that it shows the unread notifications marker in the main text font and not alarm red, so when the counter bugs out and stays on 1 it doesn't make me feel like I need to act on something that doesn't exist.1

There's nothing quite like an app force closing for no apparent reason, and no error log info.
Just spent an hour figuring out that one of the device I test on doesn't like linking GLSL shader programs if it contains a loop even know every other devices I've tested on are totally fine with it. 😑 -
Either I am too sensitive with my name or I just can't stop laughing when someone keep misspelled my English name, "Michael" into "Micheal".
I know it doesn't sound like a big deal but... *eye-roll*

Super curious here.3 -
Having to use the company's framework that doesn't like that much JavaScript
Having to do a mock of the page, and knowing you'll require JavaScript for that
Well fudge -
I use documentation to develop a connection to a feature (connection that was said to be done, but whatever.)
There is an example in the documentation of implementation.
But that example is, like I like to say, bullshit-esque.
In the implementation, the code doesn't work, and there is another way of implenting that connection. But the thing is, it uses a variable that was never declared in the example, neither in the full page. They just made it pop-up from nowhere like a deus ex machina.
Gimme a table so I can flip it.3 -
eBay's APIs make me want to cry.
Take the sandbox for example:
- Every time you log into a session, it logs you out.
- When you create an order (eventually!) and want to retrieve it, tough shit it doesn't feel like doing that today.
- Functionality both exists and doesn't exist at the same time on both the LIVE and Sandbox APIs. I don't know how they've managed to get quantum computers in their server room, but their GOD DAMN API LIBRARIES ARE NOT THE BEST USE CASE FOR QUANTUM COMPUTING!!
I don't know if I despise eBay or Magento more...undefined shit apis quantum computing i would like to poke my eyes out with a spoon wtf am i doing with my life ebay -
So... I need to implement something from a spec based on a set of standards that use another set of standards based on IETF RFC.
Decide to use a library that implements the original specs. Nothing works.
Read through all of the specs, researched the standards they used, read the RFCs.
Turns out the library doesn't implement the specs properly. Looks like I'll still have to implement my own.

Devs are divided on gitlab blunder, some appreciate their honesty and transparency while other are either cursing them or grateful that they didn't use it. But think like this :
You own a MacBook and you love it like your baby, if someone drops it, there is good probability it won't break but it will sure give you a fucking heart attack. You won't ever let that person touch your MacBook.
Gitlab just did that. They scared the hell out of the developers.
I hope everyone learns from this and it doesn't happen to anyone in future.4 -
Do you sometimes have days at work where you feel completely useless for the company. Like you can't get anything done, and you try but it doesn't work. I'm still a student, I'm attending my second year of university. Today I got what I could call a job offer. But tbh I'm not sure about that. The company that should hire me doesn't exist yet and I will work as a part-time employee until I finish the university. Idk I feel like I'm not suited for the job (I will work as Web Dev), like I'm not good enough even for a job that still doesn't exist. Yeah I'm shit2

TWENTY GIGABYTES!?!? I go to install Xamarin so I could work on a cross-platform project. My C drive is minimal in size and Windows doesn't let you install programs on the D drive. This is madd a billion times worse because Windows 10 treats secondary uard drives just like SD cards! Seriously? TWENTY for that framework?2

I don't know why but I think that I'm the only one that doesn't like material design. I get the concept and can see why Google came up with the whole material design thing, but it doesn't move me, no matter how clever it is.
Am I right? Do you hate material design too? Although hate is a strong word, so should I ask are you ambivalent to it too?3 -
My mom doesn't even know what I'm doing. She doesn't even asked much, cause she's from the old generation, and just accept the things as it is. My mom doesn't even send messages. She use phone just for calls.

Is there any multi server monitoring software that doesn't open a port for itself? Since I can't work without internet on my laptop, I started thinking of a comparison I could give, to clarify that me being a programmer, doesn't mean I can fix anything that uses electricity.

So currently we are moving from studying on Zoom to some platform called K12Online (not to be confused with K12 because this one is Vietnamese with K12 thing is not). And it doesn't have a fking sign up button. Not on their website nor in the app. There's only the Sign In button, and even that, if you think about creating a new user through the Sign In button like some platforms do, well, you are wrong! It also doesn't work as well!
Nice job, team! -
I just recently stumbled over qutebrowser, a keyboard-centered FOSS-browser. It can be used with vim-commands exclusively, so no mouse needed. The only downside is that it doesn't seem to support plugins. Perfect for people like me who keep losing their cursor 😅2

ok I think a lot of my frustrations in rust stemmed from assuming struts are like objects and therefore can contain conceptually similar things in them that in your head would seem like the same "object", and that methods should be derived therefore and such
but in reality in rust struts are for conforming to borrowing rules and it doesn't care about your conceptual organization I guess. if you try to organize things like the structs as objects then you get borrowing issues on some occasions and then I would get stuck trying to figure out how to put a method on a struct when I need to drop borrowing to do some task and whatever
the solution is to throw out your human notions of organization
so I guess it's more bare-bones to how the machine thinks about stuff (well how the borrowing is coded in the language) and doesn't care how a human does (like notions like object orientated design)
this is odd to me in a modern language but at least I've crawled out of my brain damage with enough drug-use now that I can have such epiphanies I guess. I feel so slow. I swear this should've been massively obvious and easy to grasp in like a few days before for me. rip
instead it was 2-3 years of ~5 months of actually deep coding 😒
also I can blame people saying rust can do everything, like that you can do object orientated design in it. they're being dishonest and it's harmful to the learning process if you're acting like that 😩. stop being a cult, you'll literally be more popular4 -
Anyone work with a dev "higher" up than you, but that "senior" dev really doesn't understand how to write good code? That dev also doesn't understand how to remove old un-used code and basically follows every anti-pattern in the book -- bad variable naming, using switch statements when an if would be more logical, etc. I don't know how these people reached the height of the totem pole that they are on, but my goodness is it frustrating. How can someone SO OBLIVIOUS have so much power?! And everywhere they go they leave a wake of destruction that undoubtedly will need to be cleaned up by someone else later down the time... It's like they don't care at all but deep down you know they are just bad at their job... UGH!

Now that I think about it, if I need all these extensions to make gnome nicer, maybe gnome isn't all that good. Any suggestions for other wm's?1 -
Is there something like tinder that doesn't require a photo?
I just don't like my own face right now. That's all.28 -
A bot that lives on your IM accounts and automatically replies "please add postcode" to any incoming message that looks like an address but doesn't have one.5

Code doesn't lie, but sometimes you really feel like it is. Just curious, is there anyone here that has ever actually found a bug with a platform?2
-
Of course iPhone connected to the Mac with iTunes on doesn't let you grab photos and videos from it, because why should it? It's not like feature that even feature phones have.
-
i swear sometimes windows can just piss you off. like why. luvit.exe is in the SAME folder as octi.lua. command prompt sees it and runs it, but powershell apparently doesn't like that and wants to make things complicated.
also inb4 im called a total idiot2 -
I keep getting emails from people I don't know that are like conversations, leading me to believe they aren't sent to the rightful owner. Most of the time, I see the email has uppercase at some places (when mine doesn't).
I just wish the companies could put a mark somewhere in their page when entering an uppercase email that mentions the fact that it doesn't change shit, getting really annoyed from receiving these mails not directed to me 😒 -
So, like, why doesn't Java let me do manual memory management? In C# if I want to screw up the code-base and everyone that comes after me with my half-informed experiments it totally lets me.21

Kind of a followup on my earlier rant, it seems like my "teacher" doesn't even really know C++. He replied to me that "the code doesn't work", which is probably because the code needs the compiler flag for c++11 (I barely even know what I'm talking about here), which he would've known *if he looked at the error message*?!
Have I mentioned enough yet that I STARTED LEARNING C++ LITERALLY ABOUT 2.5 WEEKS AGO?!?! OTL5 -
Managed to apply Particle.js to my personal website today. It's a lot of fun to play with and you can make some pretty interesting effects. Recommend it to everybody.
Only problem is that Chrome doesn't seem to like this library very much. It doesn't start on Chrome unless your website is on a server (you can always use Live Server or something like that from your code editor). Or you can always try a different browser. It seems to be only a Chrome problem.
Can't wait to get my site live and hear what you guys think. Though, don't expect too much please.8 -
Going back to Chrome! :( The reason: I was for like 1 hour trying to figure out why the 'src' of a image wasn't getting changed by JavaScript, then BOOM, SO explains me that Firebug doesn't update those kind of changes :/ That and the fact you can't edit your external js from the browser... That was your last chance Firefox :(2

So, I have a little issue with a program on Github.
- little ttest script in PHP PDO: works
- MySQL-CLI: works
- the program itself: doesn't work
In all 3 cases, the credentials are the same (checked a thousand times)
maintainer be like: "this issue is most likely caused by invalid credentials or the user that doesn't have the rights"
Not the case since the other 2 test cases did succeed --'6 -
Submenu Boards doesn't show in Firefox 45.5.0 when viewing a single issue. This is really frustrating as I can't move quickly between the sprint board and a specific issue. What also sucks about jira is that there is no way to report bugs like this (perhaps Atlassian sincerely believe that they never have any bugs in their products), leaving devrant as the only resort to let out steam ;)

Some day ago I ranted that I needed to program Angular2 but my keyboard didn't have the ` symbol.
Now I decided to remap the useless £ to `. I wasted like 2 hours but it seems that doesn't exist any way to do it. I downloaded like 10 application but nothing, I can't remap a second-function key.
Oh my god, who invented the italian keyboard needs to burn in the hell10 -
Even when the code is right, it's wrong. Like when you are fixing bugs:
"damn, this variable doesn't look like it belongs in this part of the code", but when you look further into it you see that is correct and you continue with the bug and have no idea what the next step should be.1 -
When you realize that your company's git doesn't support smth like emailing or notifs, when commenting on bugs/merge requests/etc. and you manually have to tell those ones via other channels, that you just wrote smth/responded to them.
As a co-maintainer of a personal project I feel spoilt now, for having this functionality for free, but ... oh dear2 -
When all the feedback you get from a damned class diagram was "Ok looks good :)"
Not sure if good because it doesn't look like a complicated cobweb anymore or because the relationships established were right - though I doubt you can say that just by looking for a mere 30 seconds at a class diagram with more than 20 classes. -
Last day, Alot of stuff horrified me with this client.
The worst was probably:
Had to send an email to open a ticket, you can't just create the ticket...
No knowledge at all of git: they were opening a repo test for every repos... (`repo.git` and `repo-test.git`, you know to do 'like a branch')
AAaaaah Only 1 hours.
At least my other client doesn't do shit like that :D -
Should I install Elememtary OS (Loki) ?
Anyone that uses eOS, why do you use it? Any problems with it? Gimme advice.
I tried it on Virtualbox but apparently it doesn't like that very much. Files didn't have a search function, bit hard to customise.
I'm willing to try, everyone seems to be using it, I assume it shouldn't be that bad.9 -
A friend of mine came to ask help for their capstone project.
Adding AI feature to a capstone project that doesn't solve the problem.
Their professor wants to add that because IT students can do it by just downloading a package.
Like, are you serious??
They teach "Hello World" and expects an output of very complex application. -
I spent 2 years as android dev, after that another 2 years as game dev (current work).
Now I wanna go back to being android dev but I kinda lost self confidence and feels like I'm starting from square 1. Also I will struggle explaining my 2 years gap of working with game development.
Feels like I'm a junior in the area. Feeling totally useless since the way I am now I couldn't even pass android dev interview or complete a tech task.
Having ADHD doesn't help with his. Having gained +25kg and being a fat fuck doesn't help also.
Fuck me.6 -
I would like to say I'm able to by taking decent breaks, and by seeing friends after work and on weekends, but by the time I leave work I usually am done with interacting with people, outside of perhaps messaging.
So in that sense, Discord had been my saviour in that I can stay connected to people, but in a way that doesn't bring other aspects of social media into it. -
Junior: "I've deleted the unnecessary migration files after a rollback, just like you recommended me, but the DB-table that tracks which migrations where run still shows them after running migrations"
Me: "That shouldn't happen 🤔 How did you delete them?"
J: "I deleted the code in the Up and down scripts"....
Is it so hard to understand that a migration will "run" even if it doesn't do anything?4 -
HP
I really like their laptops, or i used to. My HP lappy has a realtek WiFi card and realtek doesn't provide support for Linux. I think I also hate realtek. Furthermore, my laptop starts throttling because of dust being collected. Some people that I know have older Dell laptops that work better than mine1 -
I know what I'll do !
I'll color and number code society by some strange esoteric set of unknown creepy crappy concepts and keep adding to them until a subset of people behaves like annoying stupid freaks depending on the color of the shirt I wear a specific day !
That will make everything so much easier than having a multi palette wardrobe !
That way I can reduce the world down to a bunch of retarded pygmy rejects with an extra layer of stupidity added !
Doesn't that sound like a good idea ?1 -
What are your favorite Java books? I'd like something that goes from the ground up. It doesn't have to be for a beginner programmer, but someone new to Java.5
-
For those of you that do use Firefox developer edition, any of you noticed that the last versions are quiet buggy around development tools, like css preview of a class that doesn't update when you select a different piece of HTML?1

iOS Storyboards in Xcode feels like Dreamveawer. This Autolayout and Safe Area shit doesn't make any sense. As for Xcode itself it's a monstrosity, looking forward to purging that and reclaim my disk space.

Promotions that take ages and end up with no title changes when successful.
Why is it this hard to update a title especially for someone who's been here for 3 years and still has the same title as day 1? And it doesn't seem like Workday is the culprit here.6 -
I kind of wish there was an option for a small brown dog for my avatar.
My dog is a small brown mutt (I think that's the word? She doesn't have a breed) and right now there's no dog that looks like her 😭3 -
What does a bitcoin mining puzzle have to do with verifying transactions/driving consensus across nodes?
The winner just gets to write? The next block but doesn't that mean he is like admin, he can make up all the transactions he wants?22 -
I got a message today from a recruiter that included this line: "The firm believes in their product with such confidence, that they are willing to provide equity to anyone that comes aboard."
Ummmmmm..... Doesn't that mean the opposite pretty much??? Sounds like they are willing to liberally give up equity. Either way I though that was a really non-sensical thing to include.6 -
I hate with a passion Code Review sessions in Pull Requests. It takes days to get approved especially when you have as Lead tech someone with 3 years of experience that rejects PR because doesn't like how I named the variable and also if that person is different time zone.
In my previous company we used to have 30 minutes session if we had PRs and we would go over it.3 -
freaking once you work with office, pages, google drive.
freakin disgusted you are
freaking video holographic documentation for the foking win
okay also not even that but. yes I am disgusted how nicely it doesn't work. it !works like a charm6 -
Lets just say that Stripe payment gateway or paypal doesn't work in your country, but you have to accept payment through credit/debit cards like martercard/visa and Paypal in your web app or mobile app. How would you do it?12

Do you have meetings that your team have to bring technical subjects to talk about? We have it here, but it doesn't seem people like it, and it's difficult to find someone willing to talk. I wondered why the leads or managers insist on having these kinds of meetings.4

OMG
LVM
WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP
It's so precious that when it detects an existing mdraid signature, it just *won't* let me create a physical volume over it!
No matter that I run pvcreate with double-force switch.
It doesn't matter that the system doesn't even have a single MD device defined (Which can be easily checked in /proc/mdstat OR by checking the /dev subsystem)
I *hate* commands that are trying to be more clever than the admin sitting behind the keyboard.
Sure, leave this as the default behavior (It could save a lot of people's data I bet), but BLOODY HELL GIVE ME A SWITCH TO OVERRIDE THE CHECK YOU DUMBASS.
I swear... I feel like I'll get a frickin' brain hemorrhage from this "clever tool" -_-"5 -
Why would you use graphdb for "facebook-like" notification system?
It doesn't work that way, dude..
😑 -
I just finished typing a config file and ran into a problem with being able to save the file. I highlight the lines in vi yank them close vi re run it as sudo to see if that would resolve the issue with being unable to save read "E353: Nothing in register". Remember yank doesn't function like copy-paste on windows so it doesn't save to clip board.
Well there goes 20 minutes of work!
