"You can teach my son to code. He doesn't like typing so just use that mouse thing (track pad). He's got an idea for an app (Flappy Birds clone) that'll make millions. It needs to be done tomorrow for his school computer project."
Friend(non dev): Hey. Do you know how much it costs to maintain an app?
Me : Well that depends. What are you planning to do?
Friend: Something like Trivago. But small.
Me: That still doesn't tell me anything
Friend: Come on. Just give a number. How hard can it be?
Me: 42. *facepalm*
Friend: See wasn't that hard. Was it?
Me: *thinking* Don't correct him. Just let him be.19
October - Hired
November - Hear that CEO 2 was stealing the company money
December - Dismissing 6 persons. CEO 1 says to me that, since I'm the last hired, I'll be the first dismissed.
March - Company doesn't get better. Dismissing 3 persons... still there.
May - Company doesn't get better. Dismissing 2 persons... still there.
July - Company doesn't get better. Dismissing 9 persons... still there.
Now, with the remaining money the company should live for about 2 years and not dismiss employees anymore.
We were 25 employees, where are 4 now. I feel like the winner of Survivor.11
My boss isn't really a developer. He isn't part of the development team and doesn't know any technical details about the product. He doesn't want to code, "too much effort", he just wants to boss. But he wrote some php in the early 2000's and is really, really proud of his codecademy html/css badge...
And that makes him dangerous.
Today I hear him talk from behind his laptop: "Right, we have this page for creating management groups, but we can't edit them yet. I can fix that!"
This task is literally on the current sprint, but he doesn't know that because he doesn't attend scrum meetings and ignores everything people say to him.
Me: This smells like probable cause, let's look with suspicion over his shoulder.
"OK, right-click create.blade.php -> copy.
then right-click directory -> paste.
now just rename file to edit.blade.php!"
I start walking to the office kitchen.
Boss mumbling in the background:
"Now all I need to do is just copy the whole method in the controller, change the post url in the form, and modify the <h4> at the top, so it says edit instead of create."
Boss, looking at me now:
"This is so easy... creating and editing is almost the same thing, you can just copy paste all the code from one template to the other! I don't understand what you developers are always complaining about!"
Me: *Hands him a roll of paper towels*
Boss: "What is that for?"
Me: *points at code*6
FOR FUCK SAKE...
Me on the train. A fucking 12 year old kid, fanboy of the iPhone X.
1. He calls it "X" (the letter). I bet he doesn't even know that it is a 10.
2. "it has only one port so you can use Bluetooth headphones". He seems like he is amazed by that. Like wtf? Guess what motherfucker you can use Bluetooth headphones even if you have a dedicated headphone jack.
3. "it has wireless charging"... Oh would you please fuck yourself you fucking donkey.
4. "it is so thin. Not like those other phones". So can somebody kick this guy or I will do it myself...
Sry gone full AlexDeLarge here...10
So Nvidia doesn't let you use their GeForce Experience app anymore without logging in.
Fuck that, I don't want to login so I can see an FPS counter in my ganes or record them to my local disk or something like that... Fuck you Nvidia and fuck whoever decided that would be a good idea.8
I'm still remembering that one time a friend of mine asked me to pass him the WiFi-cable.
I know, that sounds like a cliche, but it's getting better...
We are both information and communication engineering students...
I told him to think about what he just said and after some seconds of thinking he responded with "Oh yea, I forgot that my laptop doesn't have a WiFi Jack..."
He's passing most exams with distinction btw...1
A few of Stux's !dev pet peeves
1) People that walk slow as fuck in the middle of a side walk. Like hurry uppppp. I've gotta get 0.5 miles in like 8 minutes and you blocking the walkway doesn't help.
2) People that don't understand how side walks work. Treat it like the fucking road. ⬇️⬆️ Is the pattern in which you should walk. It's not rocket science.
3) People that start walking up the bus steps as I'm clearly walking forward to get off. Ffs let me off and THEN get on you stupid bitch
4) people that bike or ride their skateboard/longboard around campus but are moving slower than I am while walking. If you're gonna do that hop the fuck off and carry the damn thing.
5) people that don't try to solve an issue with their code on their own BEFORE they call the professor over. (There goes the !dev lol)
6) people that act like their favorite musician or athelete or actor or anyone fucking famous they play kiss ass with can't be criticized. Just bc they're famous and/or good at what they do sure asf doesn't make them perfection and I retain the right to voice my opinion.
My name is Stuxnet and you're watching Disney Channel.14
I'm moving out soon and normally when the hallway is filled with stuff/boxes, the landlord doesn't like that and you might get a warning.
I take that quite seriously and thus always tried to keep it clean.
Now I'm moving in a few days, hallway is filled with stuff and the landlord told he doesn't like that at all.
I can't be bothered much, my new room is already available, good luck with kicking me out now 😋10
I think I need to finish my coffee this morning30
Python -> indentation
HTML -> <!doctype HTML>
C++. -> int main()
PHP. -> <?php ?>
These are the fundamentals for some popular languages. Than there is this;
Lisp. -> ()
Like it doesn't give a fuck.
Not a single one.
I like that.11
My boss expects me to create an android application like Instagram just in 1 day ... 😂😂
it's terrible that your boss doesn't have any knowledge about programming...😥7
Linux is sooo offensive. I think we should replace the 'sudo' command with pretty_please or something like that. What if the PC doesn't feel like executing the command? At this point, sudo-ing can be considered rape.10
a client wants a nice clean website that doesn't look like it's 10 years old. then they ask for like everything that made the old site terrible5
"You're a programmer right? Can you fix my laptop?"
"Sure, lemme take a look but can't guarantee much since I'm not that familiar with windows"
"But you said you were a programmer?!"
Seriously, I haven't worked with windows properly in like seven FUCKING years!?! Being a programmer doesn't automatically mean that you know all operating systems 😡3
So I was at work and send to another location (distribution centers) and in the lunch break my guider for that day and I started a conversation about servers etc (he appeared to do loads of stuff with that). He recommended me all those programs but I didn't recognize anything so I asked him what kinda servers he ran. He runs a lot of Windows servers. No problem for me but I told him that I am into Linux servers myself.
Guy: "Linux guy, eh? That system is considered to be so secure but in reality it's insecure as fuck!".
Me: (If he would come up with real/good arguments I am not going to argue against that by the way!) Uhm howso/why would you think that?
Guy: "Well all those script kiddies being able to execute code on your system doesn't seem that secure.".
*me thinking: okay hold on, let's ask for an explanation as that doesn't make any fucking sense 😐*
Me: "Uhm how do you mean, could you elaborate on that?"
Guy: "Well since it's open source it allows anyone to run any shit on your system that they'd like. That's why windows rocks, it doesn't let outsiders execute bad code on it.".
Seriously I am wondering where the hell he heard that. My face at that moment (internally, I didn't want to start a heated discussion): 😐 😲.
Yeah that was one weird conversation and look on open source operating systems...25
* Boss gives you a shitty work that doesn't follow standards
* you tell him that this is wrong, and there will be consequences on time and performance on the future.
*you do the work like he says
*after a while he asks for modifications
*takes too long because of structure problems, and non compatibility
*you get blamed
*you hate your job, your boss and your life.7
YouTube recommendations are like when you tell your mom that you enjoyed a classical music concert, and the next day she has bought you a cello and signed you up for classes.
JUST BECAUSE I WATCHED ONE FUCKING DUMB COOKING SHOW, DOESN'T MEAN I WANT ALL MY CAREFULLY CURATED CONTENT ABOUT PROGRAMMING AND SCIENCE REPLACED WITH CELEBRITIES TRYING OUT VEGAN BARF WRAPS.5
Do you guys have that one chick / dude who doesn't know jack shit about shit but just like a fukin cockroach always manages to survive every nuclear layoff, all this guy does is come in an watch YouTube videos all day4
Most humbling experience? Probably coming to the job that I currently have right now. The people I work with are fucking brilliant. I talk to this girl that is like 6 years younger than me and I feel DUMB. But I also realized that I have knowledge she doesn't. It really helped me to realize that education and experience are great, but everyone can teach you something.5
Average linux developer: writes completely fast, optimized code that compiles the first time all via the terminal. He doesn't care.
Also average linux developer: decides to call it Winblows instead of Windows in an attempt to get more people to use linux. He feels like a genius.25
So as most of you know I was inspired to create a Minesweeper that allows continuing after you hit a mine.
Not sure if such a version existed before but... if it doesn't now it does.
Sorry @linuxxx Windows only... don't feel like learning Electron ATM or JavaFX... honestly I just wanted the games to continue after hitting a mine.18
Me: Why dosn't cp return an error code when the file in the first argument doesn't exist?
Coworker: Well, you copied a file that doesn't exist to a destination that also doesn't exist, sounds like a successful copy to me.1
We have open office. I had this co-worker Intern who sits right at the corner of the development team and farts silently. Sometimes there's no smell or little but sometimes it smells like he has shit on this pants.
No one knew that he was the one who farts in the office because he was always quiet and doing his job and doesn't react whenever anyone says anything to him.
On a friday evening when we were having drinks with other coi-workers in the office, he got high and told everyone that he was the one who farts silently in the office. Actually that was his last day of Internship too.6
"Your quote is too high, I will contact the old developer, as this would be quite easy for him!"
Alright, whatever - then 6ish months pass and suddenly the old developer said the same and since the other shit bartender doesn't want to do it "cheaper" he'd want it to have done properly, truly thinking of adding a tax to people that try to play games like that.2
getting onto the elevator just behind someone,
like 3 seconds behind him,
he presses his floor and doesn't press the hold doors option, doors close on me , coffee goes all over the place
Fuck that Ballbag, hope he eats sumthing dodgy and he shits himself!!6
Got to a client, we are taking over their software dev and IT.
"you're not touching my code ". Listen fuck twit, a robocopy script is not fucking code.
"I wrote a 3500 line code for this company" no fuck twit, you wrote a whole lot of fucking gibberish that looks like someone shat out BASH and it met html along the way. It doesn't compile, it doesn't run, it's a fucking dormant file. You charged people for shit all.
Setting up exchange is also not a big whoop.
Moving them over to CentOS server (he had them on XP still), and writing enough code to qualm my frustration at people.4
I feel like the word "code" is way too overused and more of a buzzword. There are all these sites that say "learn to code using HTML in 2 hours!" Those titles are great for getting people interested but I feel like they hurt the "reputation" of the word.
There are so many people that come to me and say they are HTML coders and know the entire language. But then they can only make a site that says "hello world" with maybe a link and a colored background.
Also. Can these sites please explain that html isn't really programming and is more like fancy documentation? Html + CSS may be Turing complete, but they aren't programming languages and in my opinion, shouldn't be treated or referd to as such.
If the message you got from this is "ewpratten doesn't like front end web development" , you are wrong. I think it's great.
Anyways.. what are you guys' opinions on this?9
Coolest thing about platforms like devrant, is that it's so easy to get people to read what you have to say, and get them to notice you.
It doesn't matter if you have a nice profile picture, have a lot of friends/followers or anything like that.
The content is what matters.
Also, its not like everything here is developer related or is super nerdy, most of the stuff you see are normal things you'd expect people to post on things like Facebook when they want to be social and connect with people.
It's sad that this is not how most social media is done.8
The PCs in our school have a software called "Dr. Kaiser" which purpose is to prevent changes to the disk. I thought it's working like DeepFreeze for OSX devices; having a copy-on-write feature or something like that. One day a friend of mine (kinda newbie in hacking) said he wanted to create a backdoor in the system so you can login as the local administrator of the device. He replaced the "sethc.exe" in the windows directory with cmd.exe on a live distro and claimed it was working perfectly. It turned out that "Dr. Kaiser" is indeed loading the default image on startup, but doesn't verify checksums for system files (and also doesn't include the files in the default image). Long story short: You now can open a cmd with System permissions on every PC in the building.
This. Is. Stupid. It should be forbidden to sell this software 😖6
I have this teacher that makes us do really simple things all the time like "copy and past this into another program" or "change this setting"
The problem is (aside from it being really boring) he doesn't understand how to do most of the things he tells us to do.
If we have a question, he goes and Google's it..5
WordPress 'specialists' love to proclaim that 27 per cent of the web is powered by WordPress (which is incorrect anyway - https://rarst.net/wordpress/... ).
However, that doesn't mean it's the best CMS, like many try to suggest. It just means a huge percentage of websites out there are using the wrong tool for the job.33
THE UNITY API IS SUCH A PILE OF UTTER FUCKING DOGSHIT I CANNOT BELIEVE IT
EVERY FUCKING TUTORIAL IS OUTDATED SINCE LIKE FOUR YEARS
THE FUCKING REFERENCE OFTEN DOESN'T EVEN LIST THE NEEDED ARGUMENTS SO HAVE TO GOOGLE AGAIN
"MOST FRIENDLY ENGINE" MY ASS
NOT TO FORGET THAT ALL EXPLAINING VIDEOS WERE MADE IN 2011 AND ALL VIDEOS ARE PLASTERED WITH ANNOTATIONS SINCE EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT6
Give everyone a chance
If someone in your company/workgroup doesn't know something basic that you might take for granted, don't undermine them and mock them.
Everyone has to learn and it just breaks morale and motivation.
Be humble and think that you're not any kind of God and think that you wouldn't like the same thing happening to you.
People who mock others for not knowing stuff just piss the shit out of me.
Be humble guys4
Nothing quite like spending a day coding with a friend on a project way over your head and actually making progress and learning shit. That feel when you run your script and it gives a DIFFERENT error? Or when it doesn't even crash at all?? Or when it ACTUALLY WORKS?!
Today I learned what GNU acronym stands for:
GNU = GNU's Not Unix!
😂 why doesn't Computer Science have more acronyms like that?14
Fuck Firefox's CSS engine! Why is it so fucking buggy?
I needed to position some elements in a circle, so I used Math.cos(Math.PI / 2) to calculate their x positions. So, mathematically speaking, that should return 0, right? Turns out in JS it doesn't (because fuck precision). It actually returns 6.123233995736766e-17 and I was using that in the style, like top: offset + that.
In chrome it was working perfectly, but in Firefox all hell broke loose. All animations stopped working, scripts stopped working, demons were eating people alive.
And I lost hours hunting that down. My fault because I should have tested it immediately on other browsers, but fuck!11
Currently developing an android app that is a clone for an existing iOS app. Sadly all the PMs and POs (the P-M/O fraction) at this firm are somehow iPhone users.
So every time we implement stuff according to android guidelines some PMO comes around and asks: "why doesn't this look/work/smell like in iOS?"
Somedays I feel like crying...6
I've been at my job for about 3 months now. They have me remaking a 10 year old site so that it's responsive and updated to HTML5. well the "senior developer" I'm working under doesn't know squat about responsive design and doesn't know that tags like font are deprecated so he's basically just copy pasting old code into bootstrap grid and calling that "updating the site". Lol did I mention he's still declaring the doctype as HTML 4 too? how did I get stuck here? -_-10
Why do we backend people have to be born handicapped for creating anything that doesn't look like absolute shit.
I'm trying to pick a primary color for my landing page for about three days now and I'm starting to lose my shit.
Can we all just start using fucking CLI apps and be done with the whole design thing.13
I hate sharing something that I made and that I think is super cool with my non-dev friends and then they're like "yeah so? doesn't look that hard."
I think I am the only person on the universe that doesn't like stickers on laptops.
1 or 2 could be fine, but more than that is just ugly for me.5
For once I would like to have a scrum master who doesn't try to be a psychologist and just helps us adhere to whatever methodology we are supposed to be following.
We are developers, we know we're dysfunctional, we like it that way and stop telling me I have to wear pants to meetings!!!1
*receives an old business laptop as payment for refurbishing another one*
Hmm, this thing doesn't have a charger with it.. looks like it's taking 18.5V.. my HP laptop's charger supplies that but its barrel connector doesn't fit 🤔
Regular users: oh dear now I have to buy a charger with a fitting connector for this.. where do I even start?!
Me: Well I guess I could just remove the charging port and solder some wires straight into the board instead 🤔
But that voltage.. my HP laptop's charger is still in use and I don't really want to fuck around with that one.
Regular users: oh dear oh dear, shouldn't I just throw this laptop away?
Me: well I guess that I could just use one of the rails of my upgraded lab bench power supply for it?
Lab electronics saving the day, every day, time and time again.. fuck yeah 😎6
Allllllright. Time for another one of these. It's necessary.
We get it, you don't use/like/acknowledge Google. Please, kindly STFU already with it. The entirety of the smart internet has made your point.
Oh, because I use Google I'm a fucking idiot? No, you are for thinking that. I've used many engines and consistently have they given me worse results. "Oh, it's because they build a search profile for you, they're spying" Yeah, I get it already, fuck off.
Linux is NOT the thing that's going to solve every single human problem, so please stop treating it like a good and saying everything else is complete shit and nobody should use it.
Windows has issue, but so does Linux. At least I can (usually) comfortably update Windows, knowing what the update includes, without having to read the source code fhanges or be scared that there's a fucked up package update.
Just because something isn't open source doesn't mean it's the fucking devil. And just because I USE that closed source thing doesn't make me... Well, anything really, except for a guy who actually gets different programs. Please stop trying to tell me what I NEED TO DO to be a "good person" or user or anything like that, I'm going to do what I damn well please. If that means using Windows with Closed source things like Nvidia drivers and cards, the so be it. Got a problem? Go fuckyourself with it.17
Felt like a fucing badass just now. My boss sent me a message saying that one of the servers is down and that he can't reach anyone else and he doesn't know how to fix it.
So I sent him a couple of Linux commands to fix the issue and it worked! By his reaction you could tell he was really happy, and so was I!8
Co-worker - "We need to have this added just like this, you should be able to do that right, it looks easy"
Me - "HA we'd have to redesign the whole architecture to make that work, and you still can't even figure out how to take a screenshot after I've showed you 20 times, so maybe don't tell me how easy something does or doesn't look"3
when you are a 19yo trying to build a portfolio and you have a mother bashing everyday that you only spend time "at the computer" and I should get "a real job" and that "your dream will never come true" really is the biggest disappointment of my dev life.
It just builds pressure and sads me. She doesn't support me cuz I'm not "doing any money".
I feel like I should just quit everything or even disappear from this shitrock that is called earth....21
Some more of Stux's !dev pet peeves
1) Teenagers who comment shit like "I'm from the wrong generation" or "today's music is trash. This is real music" on songs from like the 70s and 80s. Like shut the fuck up. You can like whatever music you want, but your taste in music doesn't make you unique, so just shut the fuck up and listen to the music. I was jamming out to 70s and 80s when I was 9, so you aren't the first to enjoy older music at a young age
2) "Old heads" who comment shit like "this isn't real *genre*" on a new song that isnt like the older version of that genre. News flash: music fucking evolves. Just because that country song doesn't have a twangy guitar in it, that doesn't mean the song ain't country. Just because the rap song ain't some deep ass poetic shit, it doesn't make it any less of a rap song.
3) People who edit their comments on YouTube to say shit like "wow thanks for all the likes, I wasn't expecting this." Wooptie fucking doo. Your comment got a few thousand likes. Fun fact: those likes are meaningless.
4) Humidity. Fuck that shit man.
5) General education classes. They're a fucking pain in the ass man. Like im 98% confident I don't need art history in the real world. Or mythology. "tHeY tEaCh YoU tO lEaRn." Teach me to learn in degree specific classes then. At least their content will be interesting to me.
My name is Stuxnet. Thanks for coming to my TED talk again.20
Tells my non-programming friend that it's way more complex to program an A.I. that simply distinguishes a tree, than to make a program that adds up for like, a billion numbers...
SHE DOESN'T BELIEVE ME.2
Still fail to see why people give a fuck if you're self taught or have a degree. (By people I mean other developers, not employers.)
Why does it matter? Trick question: it doesn't matter. All that matters is their code.
And fun fact: both educated and self taught people can write shitty code.
Idk it just seems like unnecessary division in a group of people that all do the same fucking thing: program.30
Thank you Google for reminding me that if I start my commute. RIGHT NOW. I can be at work in time for 07:24.
When the fuck have I ever been at work that early? Just because it's morning and I'm awake doesn't mean I'm fucking rushing of to work.
I LIKE TO NOT STRESS IN THE MORNING AND BE COOL AS A FUCKING CUCUMBER.8
Sad. Got a new job. Apparently, readable code is not a priority. My suggestions were being ignored. Does the benefits of condensing an if-else to a simple one-line return statement really that hard to understand? Does making clean and readable code should be an optional thing to consider? It doesn't help that I'm the youngest, they felt like I don't have enough street cred. I'm starting to hate my job.11
I can forgive some weirdness in generated html, but it is when generated html is combined with some plugins, and then a starting html dev who doesn't know what he's doing sprinkles some extras on top that you get frankenstein creatures like this.6
My boss just asked me to participate in a conference call to help an external senior dev implement some stuff/tool into our website.
My boss suspects that he doesn't even know Git...
Let's see how that whole thing will turn out.
My boss told me that he looked at his code and it already looks like an abomination of PHP...
It is enough that my boss usually writes shitty spaghetty code.
I will not sleep well this night.1
Everyday, I am amazed at developers like those here on devRant. I look up at you in awe and admiration, always thinking about how awesome your life probably is, even though you rant about it sometimes. I want to be like many of you in the future.
Thank you for improving our lives with whatever you are doing. I feel like this doesn't get said enough.
Meanwhile, University sucks (failed exams), but I am expected to graduate with good grades. Sigh. I also feel like I'm not learning enough of those things that I need to become a good dev and rather overly complicated math which I'll never need in my later life.24
Did anybody else know that putting comments in your HTML creates an EMPTY TEXT NODE IN THE DOM?
REAL helpful information when you have to GATHER EVERY ELEMENT WITH TEXT INSIDE OF IT!
WHY WOULD HTML EVEN BE LIKE THIS? IT'S A COMMENT! WHY DOES IT HAVE ANY EFFECT, even if it's minimal, ON THE DOM WHATSOEVER, THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!5
Just came back from my vacation, only to find out that my PC is now broken.
Like, it doesn't turn on.
GitLab CE crashed after doing a reconfigure, something with the LetsEncrypt client. Hours of debugging later it suddenly works again and the letsencrypt client doesn't throw errors either.
Happy that it works again but I'd like to know WHY it suddenly works again after I pretty much changed nothing (or, I did, but I put everything back to the original values every time a suggestion doesn't work).
q: "why doesn't python do this like i want:
me: "Here's an answer that quotes an article and links out explaining with Python 3.6.x doesn't allow that."
every fucker: "downvote, doesn't answer why it isn't allowed"
FUCK YOU, PROVIDE AN ANSWER THAT DOESN'T SAY WHAT I SAID8
Designers that continually use non-webfonts, KNOWINGLY, and then get pissy when the site doesn't look EXACTLY like the concept.11
$ npm install ...
$ added 10 packages from 7 contributors and audited 21813 packages.
I realized that after some point you don't even think about your project dependencies growing. Because even adding 10 packages, it looks like it doesn't even changes the total number of packages. 21813, 21920, 21980... Does it even matter? Fuck.7
I feel like I'm in an abusive relationship with Ubuntu.
I love it but whenever I'm with it it screws up my environment and doesn't work when I need it to.
I go back to Windows reluctantly and get everything set up and stable. I'm happy, but not excited about it. And then, within a few months, I get that thought. Maybe if I put enough work in I can make Ubuntu work for me as my main environment.24
So I've kicked off the motorcycle season for this year! Scanned some nice roads for speed control traps or road dirt, then the same route with more WABROOOOOO.
That machine is whopping 19 years old, and I still like it as much as on the first day when I bought it as new. Plus that it doesn't have software nonsense, not even injection. Means, it fucking works.9
Being a developer is like being a mechanic at a car manufacturer. Except that everybody else in the company is completely clueless about how a car actually works and the client doesn't have a license.1
Got tired of working for somebody and decided to start my own company. Though it would be quite easier to get funding for a proper computer. For 3 days been visiting banks but no luck.
Hoped that at least my wife would be a support, but she keeps bringing me down by saying thing like "what if your company doesn't start off properly?"
I'm kind of down, I could use some pick me up!9
Some websites are a disgrace to the internet and I wish there was a service that terminates them on a daily basis.
Really though, can you do some simple research about your users and see what will make their life easy?
You put the most important button of your website in a place where the I have to scroll down and looks for it. The beginning of your page has a stock picture that has no meaning or relevance to the topic of your page. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?
And your button, it doesn't even look like a fucking button. It looks like a normal text, which doesn't even react to hovering. At least change the cursor to pointer so that I can understand that it's a button.
Fuck you, your button and your useless stock picture.3
This fucking professor who doesn't go to classes and demands make up classes to catch up. Like WTF, So now you are taking our precious resting time where it is the only time we get our precious sleep? Fuck off. It was not our fault that you did not show up. I get that you want to catch up but taking our rest time is not cool. You are not the only one who stress us with fucking projects and exam shits...13
I've been hunting for a new job for several months because my current company isn't growing my skills any further. There have been many setbacks, a few rejections, and that awful lingering imposter syndrome. So I finally dug myself out of my self pity and began learning things that my current company doesn't implement – JS frameworks, UX practices, etc. Today I had an interview that felt more like a conversation and collaboration than getting grilled about terminology and bug fixes. No matter what the result, I've been inspired to learn again 😌13
To this day I still don't know how the hell Nvidia makes some of the most powerful graphics cards available, yet manages to somehow also write the shittiest software among them. Somehow not only their control panel application takes an eternity to start, their context menu option makes that run like trash, and even Windows Explorer doesn't go unaffected.
But the solution as always: throw more hardware at it. Maybe that's why they make such powerful cards.9
I feel like I should pick up a hobby that doesn't involve a computer, something outdoorsy. Anyone else feel the same way?18
So we have this one dude in our team. Mid level engineer. 7 months old in the company. Arguing with everyone. Doesn't listen to the leads. Wants to do stuff in his own way. Complains about everything. First I thought he knows he stuff. But the. I realized he just wants to disagree with everything. Also thinks that all the work he did in his last job is superior. But most of the things are not following standards. Looks like he is just full of himself. How to deal with a person like that? Will he get fired eventually?8
I have that friend who keeps telling me that he doesn't like java just because it's slow! (I hate this excuse).
Friend: look what java did to Android, it's because of java that iOS is faster tham Android.
Me: whaaat!! do you know that Android OS have nothing to do with java? it's C++ you...
Friend: No it's Java, we develop Android apps with java
That moment when you build your webpack project and it doesn't get the progress right. lookin like h4ck3rm4n now5
How can some developers send emails like "I did <x> and <y> right, but I still have an error!" with NO copy/paste of the error? Come on, you hate user emails that just say "Your site doesn't work." You should know better.
I'm going to just start answering with "Wow, that sucks, and you did everything right, huh? It must just hate you." I shouldn't have to go force you to tell me what the problem actually is at that basic level.
I used to think this was a user thing. We wouldn't do that... hah, lost user, oh well, that's why we're helping them. Apparently it's not.6
In an application that everyone in production floor used... I made some "improvements"... Next I know I get tons of tickets because is really slow... Like 20 minutes waiting and it doesn't load... I try with my user in their computers and it loads instantly... Puzzled... After trying in many computers my user loads instantly... Oops... I left a if(user = "me") skip all active directory checks 🙄... Made all production floor lose about 3 hours 😆 because I didn't believe 😛2
Idk if people noticed but Snapchat CEO allegedly said that he doesn't want to expand in poor countries like India and Spain.
Well good luck getting hatred from 1+billion people.
The rating section had a drastic increase in the 1 star rating. Damn, that's one way how to not run a business.5
Ranting to my team lead:
- The guy has a masters in CS but codes like an one armed monkey!
- Look, you'll see with time that education doesn't mean much. Smart people are smart, dumb people are dumb.4
Best of both Worlds: Android on Phone, OS X for working. In my opinion everyone should use what he/she likes best. So no offense to anyone :) btw: I know that the Android Sticker doesn't look 100% like the original one.. it's all about the message behind it :)2
A client is like: Help! We got a 500 in our wordpress administration panel and there is no error in the log, it must be your infrastructure at fault!
So I calmly replied to them that wordpress handles its errors on its own, and without the appropriate debug flags enabled, doesn't log it anywhere. Even mentioned that a PHP app can change the error handler no problem, and linked them to both, PHP and Word press docummentation.
Didn't hear from them since.3
Scrum is terrible. Is there another agile technique that isn't as bad? Like maybe one that will let us do our "scrum" once a week for like an hour? My current project really doesn't lend itself to once a day scrums. Literally my scrum input is "I worked on what I have been working on, and I'm gonna work on it more today. Impediments are literally the same as they always are because my life is no longer my own."5
Germany is a nice place, but sometimes the bureaucracy is a bit much.
Especially when you try to write them a nice mail that you can't come to their "mandatory" appointment.
Because you're sick, like every damn time during the autumn holidays.
An email to an address where the hostname doesn't even exist. WTF?
Also don't you think that address is a bit too long? Chances for typos are pretty high when you do that, you know?5
Why is every company so BAD at working with spaces in passwords? Just trying to setup Hulu on my PS4, apparently I forgot my password? No, my password had a space in it. So maybe Hulu's just one of those companies that doesn't allow spaces in passwords? Wait no, I can log in with no problems on my Switch or PC with the space. It's just SPECIFICALLY the PS4 app that doesn't allow spaces. Cool cool cool.
Like, am I missing something? Is there some reason it's harder to hash than other characters? It's just an ASCII character, it's not like I'm copy/pasting in some fringe unicode shit. Some companies straight up ban it. Some like Amazon don't recognize it as a special character, while demanding I use a special character. Why is this so terrible?5
Why does node-sass have such garbage documentation?!
I've now spent over an hour trying to get a clear and concise answer to how that shit works, and what do I get? This: (see picture)
I don't know what any of that means, nor do they care to tell me.
I don't want to render this shit at runtime, I want it to compile the sass code when I make changes to it so my app doesn't get boggled down by unnecessary background processes.
But nooo of course not.
To top it off, the "easy" electron-compile solution doesn't even fucking compile because all its dependencies are either outdated or 404 on me. 😡
It's shit like this that makes me hate web-style development. Lacking documentation and people who just assume everything is logical and clear from the start. It's fucking not.5
Our company is cheap, cheap as fuck. We have to use some third-party platforms and every year they choose something that is slightly cheaper than the other. (like a few $ per annual), they do not know that we have to refactor our code at the backend because the changes of the platform.
It doesn't end there, they even look for devs from third world countries to work for them remotely instead of hiring permanent staff (I understand it is cheaper because of currency difference and etc), but what about the training period or to let them become comfortable with the existing system, even when he/she is a genius... it takes time to be productive at work.
The worst part is they dont give a shit, they think devs can be replaced easily just like some construction workers carrying stuffs on site (no offence to them), management treating people like shit and doesn't care when they leave.2
WTF is this shit? Multiply by 0 * Math.pow(2,0) upto Math.pow(2, 10).
Like why the fuck would you write that and not write a comment as to why that logic and explain everything else. Fucking fuck.
Turns out this logic is supposed to mimic the back end logic of breaking the flag value into binary and then set other flags depending on each bit. But why would you do that? I was starting to doubt if 0*n = 0.
This piece of code is inefficient, trying to be smartass, doesn't explain shit and doesn't have the only comment that mattered.1
Have any of you heard that Melinda gates does not want to invest in "White guys with hoodies?"
That mogul said that she won't invest in white startups, because "she wants to invest in venture firms that focus on women and minorities — while deriding the venture capital (VC) industry for its lack of diversity." Are you actually pissing me here? I thought that she was a businesswoman! I am pretty sure that, business doesn't work like that. Shouldn't you invest in startups that have good ideas? Ideas that will change a technology, or introduce some new amazing invention, or at least give some kind of profit?
I think that this is going too far. I am afraid that, by the time I enter and graduate college, that most companies will be thinking like that. This is honestly scary. So, what she's telling me, is that if there's a team of white men, who have a great idea, but there's also a team of colored women who have a worse idea, that she will invest in them?! Like what the actual hell? This is bloody racism!
If companies start hiring and promoting people, based on their gender or skin color, doesn't that make them sexist and/or racist? Why do they argue that you "cannot be sexist or racist against white people/men." I am afraid that, if America keeps going in this direction, white men will turn into what black men experienced in the 1960s.

Hurricanes that start with the letter F can go fuck themselves.
Fran - 1996
Floyd - 1999
Florence - 2018
All 3 hit (well Florence hasn't hit yet, but it's fixing to) NC and did significant damage.
I wanted a few days off from classes, but not like this man. Fucking hell I hope it doesn't take the power out for too long or destroy anything important (like people).6
So I have a fucking groupmate for our degree project and he's been constantly bugging on my neck asking me to do things. The problem with him is that he constantly reminds me of the things that I should be doing and he seems like he wants the thing to be done all himself. Basically, he doesn't trust me that I could deliver whatever he asks me to do. He keeps on micromanaging me from time to time and he seems like he wants to control my life altogether! Fuck this.
Oh and another, whenever he asks for opinion, whatever you say doesn't even fucking matter. He dismisses it immediately anyway and goes with whatever he thinks.
Seriously, fuck this!!! I can't keep calm and I need to constantly check on my posture! (Forgot the right term...) Uhhhh halp6
Currently working as student part timer on a company that I really like.
When I'll finish my bachelor's degree, I will have been there for about 2-3 Years, additional to my 5 years working prior to that as a developer.
Today I learned, that our company doesn't usually pay the market price for devs (not a huge company, 150 employees, so it's understandable).
So now I don't know what to shoot for when discussing a raise after my degree. Should I still aim for market price? Should I argue with that and hope for the best?
I'm really unsure about that stuff...4
Build an app that would tell you about all the news that mainstream media doesn't want to cover, like what's happening in parts of Africa, the enslaved workers in the far East and the situation of the Syrian and Iraqi lands under siege.
Then follows it with a cute baby/puppy/kitten video so you don't end up looking at the "empty half of the cup"1
HAHA! Google just got fined 4.34bn EUR by the EU! According to the EU they forced manufacturers to preinstall their search app and browser. In my opinion, a fine like this is a nice statement, but doesn't really affect a company that makes 111bn US$ per year. I think there needs to be proper taxation for GAFA!
What do you guys think?10
Don't start with Java but something simple like Python or Ruby or anything that doesn't need that much blob too run a Hello World! program. That was what confused me the most. And by 'start' I mean like the first few lessons, just to get started.14
Is it just me? Or is it normal to feel special when a cs teacher see you writing x86-64 assembly in class.. it's just that look of "ok.. you clearly are better at my class than me".. anyways. I am finally learning assembly. Any suggestions on something to do so that this doesn't seem like a useless skill?12
[context: sitting in a chair, posting a comment here in devRant]
Other Person (jokingly): "That doesn't look like volunteer work, that looks like texting!"
Me (awkwardly): "Haha, yeah..."
Me (internally): If only I had people to text...3
I've became a better dev/sysadm since I've got a girlfriend. She has no freaking clue what I am doing when I'm working or sitting in front of my laptop. But she's often interested in the things i'm talking or ranting about when somthing doesn't work out like i've planned or some stupid problem occurs that I'm not able to fix. I am so glad i've got her. :)2
OK I've just got an idea that I think would be quite neat:
How about a virtual rubber duck that sits in the corner of your editor? Just like the gem in old Word, if you remember. It's yellow and quacks sometimes, and nods understandingly when you talk to it (mic monitoring).
And it also monitors your typing and says (popup text bubble) things like:
"those parentheses doesn't look balanced to me"
"did you really initialize that variable?"
"you wrote JASON again"
"you forgot the ;"
You get the point.
I don't have time to implement, feel free to steal my idea and become a millionaire.5
Quick tip: ! means NOT. So !rant is a post which isn't a rant. !question doesn't indicate that the post is a question, but rather the opposite (and therefore there isn't really a need for that tag). You might also see something like !!rant which is the same as writing rant (that tag is also unnecessary, considering the name of the app)8
If you're going to add unnecessary white space to code, at least keep it consistent. And by consistent, I mean learn to write code that doesn't look like you pair programmed with a toddler who had a hour long tantrum on the damn spacebar.2
I spend the whole day decoding Assembly code for special formulas that we require for a current project.
And the client doesn't have them anywhere else.
There's only that old desktop application - written in assembly.
My Pc and I never felt so close before...
If it sounds like it was fun, it wasn't.
NOT. AT. ALL.2
So enlighten me here. Am I the only one that doesn't lose his absolute shit when it comes to privacy?
I know that some companies are collecting data, and to a certain extent, I'm fine with it as long as the trade-off is good.
I like that Google is "learning" who I am and what I like, cause now, I only see news and articles relevant to my interests, and search predictions are much better. Same with targeted Ads. On an off chance that I'm not using Adblock I like seeing products that I might like, which I otherwise probably wouldn't even know existed.
Except for Microsoft. I have no idea why, but that's where I draw the line.133
People talk about how the use of Linux as a desktop requires an inordinate amount of time, as if that's a unique problem in Linux. There is no such thing as an operating system that I don't spend weeks and months tweaking to make my own.
The difference is that Linux doesn't resist me like other OSes.2

I hate when people make posts and use emojis that my phone doesn't know about.
I'm looking at people like you @varEnigmatic.1
this happened two months before,
there's a UI designer guy at my office when I was about to leave the office he gave me a web page UI which has to be done by the next day.
Next day I started working on that page when I was halfway done he came to my desk and said: "there're some changes in design, the client doesn't like this part and this."
I'm like, why the fuck you didn't take client confirmation on the first place that's a fucking basic and first thing need to do. Just like the client you are a fuckin idiot. And now we don't hang out anymore.
So flashing microcontrollers gets kinda annoying when you have to simultaneously fight Windows defender's urge to flag the flashing software as Trojan every 30 seconds like a 10 year old kid with ADHD that just discovered coffee.
It doesn't get easier when suddenly only one of three USB ports recognises thumb drives with the current Windows version, and only after two reboots.
Maybe I should just run it in a VM like the three remaining QA testers at Microsoft do, but on the other hand I don't really like the idea of flashing firmware from a VM. Just feels even dirtier.28
An interface is like a pm. It defines the tasks that need to get done, but doesn't know and care about how to do them; if they're getting done they're happy.
Had given my laptop at the repair store. They were just suppose to do a checkup and then give a choice on whether to repair or not. They repaired it and charged me 2.8K. No unit replacement or anything, just service. I didn't mind it (was actually happy seeing my laptop boot up and not have a blank screen). It's a dual-boot (Windows/Antergos(Arch-linux)). It booted to Windows instead of GRUB. Didn't care too much, because it had happened before and I had handled it.
After I take it back home, I discover that the WiFi doesn't work (it doesn't even seem to be a driver issue). Live boot of arch doesn't have access to WiFi either. Reinstalled GRUB, only to discover it doesn't boot successfully (issues with video card). So, now I'm stuck with fucking Windows WITHOUT WiFi and an arch-linux that doesn't fucking boot.
Gonna reinstall Arch now.
P. S. : Windows is super fast, because I haven't really used it and don't really like using it. I feel very limited by Windows.9
I love how odd very intelligent things can (seem to) be. Cryptography is incredibly complex, and the reason the computer was created in the first place. But that doesn't stop them from being all
"Heyyyy, y'all got any of them P R I M E N U M B E R S? We like em BIG, we'll paaaaay"3
What was wrong with the major updates and clean modern UI? It was the only reason that made us happy.
Now buggy and not surprising minor updates, doesn't really support touch like 8.1, poor animations, poor etc. that looks like a quick without-love development to just "release quickly".
Anyways, who else liked the modern metro UI in 8.1 and sad about going back to traditional desktop on win10?48
Isn't it a bit weird that a site like devRant exists?
Doesn't it show the underlying problem with developing software and what it does to the human mind?
A lot of people seem to share the same feelings and are able to relate with the most common negative experiences over here.
Why is it that way and is the society we live in even aware of it?8
The client doesn't want to give me her PIN code from GoDaddy but I need it to make changes for her.
She told me that GoDaddy's Customer Support told her she can't give her PIN to anyone. I understand that. I told her what to do but she still wants me to do it.
She came up with the idea of teleconference between me, her and GoDaddy (is that even possible?). We live in two different countries.
She could just do it by herself (as I told her what and how to do) or give me the PIN... Nope, she thinks that it's my business to make things up.
Boss wants me to carry on this because she's difficult and may make us bad PR even if she's not right. He doesn't want a shitstorm to handle.
We made few projects for her in the past, she gave us access to all her WordPresses, FTPs, backups, authinfo codes etc but still doesn't trust us. She always thinks dozen times before she gave us some data.
And she's not even a business client. She runs a few blogs about her hobbies. She doesn't make money from them. It's not a big deal but she treats it like a treasure.
It's not easy to be gentle and kind :)3
I've just come to realize that in all the time I ran Netdata on my servers, it was nightly releases, automatically updated too.. that somehow never really broke. Not even minor issues.
I really like that... Moving fast doesn't always have to imply breaking things. I wonder how they're doing it.2
So I wrote a python code and was waiting for +1 on code review and I needed to merge it fast. That shit of a reviewer took his time to finally NOT give a +1 with comment, "if statement has no else part". OF COURSE IT DOESN'T HAVE ELSE PART. I DON'T NEED A ELSE PART. But to give him the benefit of doubt, I'd like to ask devRant community if they believe all ifs should have elses.14
Nothing more depressing than a response like "No, no, no, we can't remove this old code. It doesn't matter that there's 0 references as of 3 years ago"3
Do not use a "debugger".
A debugger is like doing a full-body scan of a sick person. You do not get any specific useful information, and you find a whole lot of information that doesn't help and is just confusing.

Describing a friend's project to a friend:
"And then theirs a tinder like element, for filtering potential dates, but that's not implemented yet."
"Why doesn't he just copy tinder?"
"You know, just copy their code and put it in his app."
"You don't... you can't... I mean you can decompile... but that's not useful because... it just doesn't work that way. For a million reasons. I don't know where to begin."3
There are several categories of software development that I know of: front-end, back-end, full-stack, game, mobile, embedded etc., but what is the term for developing libraries and/or CLI utilities in languages like C++, Python, Go etc. that are not related with any of the above? System development doesn't seem wrong but I was wondering what's the correct term for it in the industry because I need to mention it in my resume and on LinkedIn.
Also, if there's a lesser-known category that you work on then do tell us all about it 🙂5
In one big project I made in past (when I was new developer) every ajax call execute code which looks like: dbquery("SELECT * FROM table WHERE something='".$_POST['value']."'");
That project doesn't exist now (thank god)1
All things have ends. Nothing lasts
If I am currently sad, this situation will pass.
If I am currently happy, this situation will pass too.
If there is a bug, boss like shit.. it'll pass, it doesn't deserve to be that sad ans depressed..
If there is no bug, and the work is perfect.. it'll pass.. there will be moments when sadness come..
it's just everything is going, nothing deserves to be sad or that happy.4
I don't get it?
That doesn't make any scene....

Whaaaat theeeee actual fuuuuuuuuck. So basically I've got a server running and everything is fine. All services are working and I can access the webserver running on it over every browser. But randomly my ssh access stopped working (can connect but doesn't return shit after last login message) and when loading the web config thingie from my provider it gives me an empty response (all other pages from the provider are working). So basically I've got a working server I cannot access. But I'd like to access it and cannot even restart that shitty thing.
Anybody else had a problem like that or has any idea wtf is going on?5
Some """friend""" of mine asked me help because he has trouble installing WAMP on a Linux distro.
Me: why don't you try to install a LAMP server instead, you are on Linux, you can do whatever you want.
Him: LAMP is not a thing, this doesn't exist, there's no package called like that.
Me: *sends a tutorial to setup a web dev server*
Him: You are so unhelpful, why are you disrespectful like that ?!?
Me: *having some murder thoughts*
Why do I still reply to these people ?5
Can someone help me understand this oxymorron?
40y/o boss wants the company to grow, yet doesn't understand how social networks work.
Now i'm not saying Social networks are the be all end all for brand recognition, but not knowing how they work in my POV is like not turning on the stove and expecting the food to cook.
That and throwing a tantrum like a kid...4
Dunno who it was, but not cool posting a rant about how Windows doesn't allow creating extension-only files like ".htaccess" through Explorer and then deleting the whole thing right after I give him answer that it's possible if you simply name it ".htaccess."
These kind of people are exact reason why whole communities and sites like Stackoverflow turned into judgemental bastards..3
Boss: Let's hire a new person to help us recreate our website
Us: sounds good!
Boss doesn't hire anyone and starts the website on his own
Boss: I started the new website. It's in server X and the address is test.y.com. I also want all of us to work on it
Me thinking: great he just wants us to modify the hosted files like he does 🙄
Me: I'll move a copy to GitHub for version control.
Boss creates a backup folder on the same computer and folder path that the hosted files are on.
Someone please nuke that server so my boss learns version control like I've asked before. I think I'll opt not to work on a website where he and my other co-workers will just overwrite each other's changes because he doesn't want to learn to git 😑4
That feeling when you've been programming, scripting and developing games, software and web pages for nearly a decade and you still feel like a talentless hack that doesn't deserve the wages you are paid, and constantly fear being exposed as a fraud by your peers... :x6
I hope devRant doesn't ever get trends like imgur, tumbler, and all the other platforms that I hate 😅1
Anyone else here that doesn't answer people that only write "hi" to initiate a conversation?
I always feel like they try to put me in charge of leading the convo. You wouldn't call someone and just say Hi, now would you?6
I remembered one time my freakin prof in programming taugh us how to understand computer language, that time my worst enemy is ASSEMBLY, for some reasons my teacher doesn't know how to code in assembly like wtf?
On our last grading period he asked us to create a program using mov and shift and the deadline is set tomorrow after he announced it.
I remember my code in that freaking subject
HAHAHAHA after that I was scolded big time 😂
My over promising boss is upset that something that used to work doesn't work now because support decided it had to be changed. We took it apart to rebuild it and it's only partially finished right now. Says he can't show it to clients like this. Well no we told you it wouldn't be ready for the deadline you forced upon us, even before the requested changes, but instead of listening you tell us not to argue and just get it done.3
I'll just leave the PC like it is and come back to it later..

Mouse click still doesn't work.

Still doesn't work.
FX [ Goes to box with 15 spare mice in it.. ]
New backup mouse, works fine.
But I liked the shape of the old mouse !
And so hard to find second hand these days too..
Well, at least it works.
First time a mouse has died like that, and unlike most mice I have, this one I had from new less than 3 years old !
When I get a moment, I'll try the other 14 mice to see if any of them feel better..
See, I new there was a good reason why I got 16 second hand mice off Ebay as a job lot for peanuts. :-)17

I've been trying to get my job to start using Git cause they currently don't use any version control. So today I told my supervisor that I was going to set us up our server so we can host our own repositories and he was like no need we will just set your computer up so you can vpn in from home. I'm like wtf? why go through so much trouble to set that up? That still doesn't solve the problem of accidental file overwriting.-_-3
I get why it doesn't work in IE but Edge... like what? Edge is supposed to be a modern browser... No?8
I am working as a junior in a company that pays me minimum wage and doesn't give a single fuck about my existence.
"Change the job", you say?
Well, that's what I am trying to do for, like, 3rd month now. No one wants to invest into junior...
Every day I go to work with thoughts about quitting, but I need a job... Even if it's like this...
my googling Stack has overflown out of stack overflow and I feel like fucked up and create a New stack that doesn't overflow
Stupid stupid stupid API that returns a 204 on failed validations.
Informative docs? Hell no! Here's a few hundred long-ass field names that you need to pass as a JSON.
Doesn't work huh? Yeah, you're structure's all wrong. Some of these are grouped in vaguely named keys like "Wholesale".
Oh you need those as well? Yeah, you can see the whole structure if you try to GET an object.
Oh you need an ID to GET an object? Yeah you can just go ahead and create as many as you want. This is just a sandbox API, it's cool.
Oh that's not the point? Ahh you need the structure to be able to create one! *haha* Right, I'll get back to you on that.
* Email correspondence over 2 weeks time. I have still yet to be able to make a an actual successful request. The fucking 204 doesn't count if it doesn't actually create the resource.
Fucking fucky fuckity fuck fuck fuck.
I swear to god if I ever meet this guy in person, I will probably buy him coffee or beer and have a long talk about how to build proper REST APIs.
Because I'm nice like that.9
Don't you just feel that powerful personal connection when a recruiter on LinkedIn starts his message with "Dear Sir/Madam, I really like your profile and it is a great fit blah blah"...
Sure you do, enough to miss my obvious beard (and thus genre).
Oh and I'll pass on that opportunity that doesn't fit any of my skills/previous experience.
"It doesn't look anything like how we asked you to make it."
** Points to a pencil drawn wireframe that a 6 year old could have done a better job of creating. **
I get it. Functional code is still kind of considered the "new hotness" in languages like Java, but THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU NEED TO CRAM IT IN EVERYWHERE FOR THE SAKE OF IT. If in doubt, *please* go for the simpler, classic option...
Just inherited a code base that's full of things like this:
Optional.of(getResult()).filter(s -> s.equals(true)).ifPresent(s -> callService());
Optional.of(getResult()).filter(s -> s.equals(false)).ifPresent(s -> logError());4
Anyone know of any good reference material that teaches you how to implement and train your own Yolo object localization neural network? (Preferably for tensorflow) I'm not looking for pretrained models that you just downloaded and run, rather a tutorial that walks you step by step through the implementation of the network, the reasoning behind the architecture, and examples of the training data used for the training as well as the process of training?
I know it's a lot to ask but it's really frustrating when ever example is just "clone this repo, hit run and use the pretrained models" sure it might get you up and running quickly but it doesn't really teach you anything...
P.s. - seems like every educational post goes from super simple to super complex without any middle ground and the super complex stuff doesn't tell you why its used the way way it is.5
Fuck Google analytics .. seriously .. fuck it .. I understand it's a free tool that doesn't mean you mask your incompetency behind that banner.
Im pretty sure minecraft mods have better documentation than this POS.
I really like the user demographics data it gives , but with the asterisk on literally every other metric it gets harder to believe the ones that are functional.
I cant express exactly how many times I end up with hordes of articles that point out small caveats with this shit.
I know nothing about this.
Let's say your computer is on all night, and then you hit it in the morning, just re-activating all your windows... for me, it's always like a 10 minute wait until it "catches up".
I realized this morning, like, why doesn't it optimize itself while I'm away, so that when i do come back, that 10 min wait doesn't happen.
I'm sure they have thought of this, so why does it take so fucking long to wake up your computer.4
Writing hebrew in Latex using a template that doesn't support UTF-8 is the most archaic shit I've done lately. I feel like some sort of a caveman.
This fucking encoding inverts all letters so it can support right to left. 😓4
I swear this mofo runs all of my code through pylint, he comments about every PEP8 inconsistency and every formatting decision he doesn't like.
Same guy also got in a small debate with one of our converts from the older project where they used C#, because he still writes everything in Windows-style CamelCase. After that, when we needed to decide on a password for a shared thing, I came up with "camel_case".1
Head a great experience today. One of my Indian co-workers stopped by and asked if I like biryani. Yep, I do, so I went to get me some. They had a sauce on the side, a pepper sauce. Nice and hot, and generated a wonderful endorphin rush. I have to say, of most of my coworkers, the South Asian are the most friendly and polite, and I enjoy working with them. I hope Trump doesn't ruin that.2
So I gave my younger brother my OnePlus One since he is now using an even older Google Nexus and don't care much for phones. The camera is slightly better basically.
Asked him to test drive it:
Me: so did you set it up yet?
B: nope, what's the rush?
Me: well you see it's running a custom OS (Lineage) as it technically doesn't support it. You need to test drive it and make sure it works with your SIM? May need to change some configs
B: sounds like a pain, should I just get a new phone?
Me: ... yes probably...
He's a just graduated CS major that doesn't like tinkering with tech...
(Well can I have it back then so I can play around with it?)9
I really like the concept of a "hackerspace" but they are far away from my flat and after working all day I don't really wanna travel across the city for hours to try things for an hour or two because I need to catch the train on time to get at least a bit of sleep.
I'm thinking of a "digital hackerspace" where ppl can "meet" and write code or build something(?). Does something like this exist?
If it doesn't I'd really like to build that kind of thing because I'd say I'm not the only person thinking like that 😅5
If something is free, doesn't make it the best, it is like saying virtual box is better than VMware because it is free, all I can say is that virtual box is a bitch and VMware is a sexy house wife .....bitches fuck with everyone every with discount....
Good morning peeps6
"so what's the difference? there are groups and communities for devs, why devRant ?" It was my colleague's question and I was about to loose the debate between this and other social n/w.
I said "look man the greatest thing is you can build a DP that looks like a geek programmer, whatever you look like in real time doesn't even matter."
And he said "Let me see your profile."4
Just met with country brand manager of famous MNC automobile brand. They have their brand website for our country. He doesn't know any information and doesn't have any information regarding the website nor domain. He has been there for 2 years already and the website was made when the brand came to our country. So now he is stuck with that stupid ugly and most of all out-dated website.
So my point is, why the fuck did business people think domain and server information are less important and doesn't need to keep it documented and confidential?
Ok forget about server. They have to at least be very very careful with the domain name which they use it everywhere everyday.
What if it was some sick bastard like me who bought that domain and made that website? I could drop their butt ugly pages and put some animals seriously making love video up there.1
Is this a technological metaphor?
For some Hacker challenge I was reading up on different keyboard layouts, Dvorak and stuff. And the technological lock in is baffling me: The rationale for qwerty was to reduce jamming of the typewriter letter arms. Today that doesn't make sense anymore, yet we stick to it. Wondering how much of today's tech is dragged down by things like that.
This stuff often also makes me weary of the first decisions, like choosing a protocol or data base - its kind and layout, because we might be stuck with it for reasons of backwards compatibility.... Like when Microsoft opted for the backslash as a directory separator..33
Why is it accepted that cs people just have poor hygiene. If I walk into a room and almost get floored by the stench if BO it doesn't make it acceptable to say "you're not used to it? It's that cs smell, man." like, ok. that dude should still go fucking shower.
Literally the entire lab was just rank from one guy, and the room is at least 30X1005
I don't have many regrets in life but one would be that I didn't learn something harder at uni. I should have picked something like CS or cryptography or something like that. Even flat out math or physics would have been super useful.
On the other hand, the finance stuff I now see as common sense doesn't seem so common after all so there's that, and it helped me too.
I learned economics with specialization in finance btw2
So I live in the middle of nowhere and therefore I have a very limited choice of different ISPs. The short version of the choices is a fast but very limited in data size or one that works 99% of the time (I'll talk about the 1% later) but doesn't have limits on downloads. So I obviously chose the second one.
It works pretty great most of the time and I don't have any problems usually... The problem with "usually" is that the 1% of the time it doesn't work is all it needs to frustrate me. I could be downloading a massive file and around 70% the Internet decides to disconnect. It wouldn't really be a big deal if it wouldn't cause the file to get corrupted.
My point is that if you're going to share a big file, don't upload it to mega, mediafire, dropbox or anything like that. Just use torrents. They work way better for big files.2
Teacher asks me to join him for a web app development.
First stages, I have to dig deep into a framework I don't know (He doesn't know it too, and I know that learning is the only way to step through)
Month goes by, began developing some mock-ups, he says he didn't like it, sends me a website made in fucking Wix. Seriously?
Fast forward another month, tonight I'm coding some stuff, he stills doesn't know how to fucking use Yii. fml4
Today I was reminded of a valuable lesson... Never compare strings with == in java... Just spent like 30 minutes wondering why my string that I was getting from a browser parameter wasn't equalling the value I was checking for...
Apparently when I get a value from a requestParameter in spring, despite being a string it doesn't get a hashCode for some reason, or at least it got a hashcode of 0, so my strings weren't comparing because of that...22
Am I the only one who actually thinks Edge is actually significantly better than other browsers?
Like right now with 2 tabs open it's only using 17MB and it doesn't have any ridiculous features like an inbuilt video chat (looking at you Firefox). It's just simple and good at being a browser...
I like that in my browsers...11
Dell et al should start selling pre-stickered laptops so execs could buy that "dev cred" look.
There's probably a science to producing a look that doesn't make you look like someone's mum at a cool party.
What sticker placement approach do people use?3
On a shitty day where your brain doesn't work, have you ever looked at some code you wrote, and actually get intimidated by whatever version of you wrote that? After stumbling around most of the day, read some beautiful code, I admired it, then realized, holy shit, I wrote this?
"Yeah, I don't know who that was, it looks great, how the fuck did I do that, and will I ever be able to do it again"
Like, I don't think I can, definitely not today, write anything even close to that.
In response to the fuss about the Linux kernel team contemplating a new Code of Conduct and revelations that Linus Torvald's daughter has sighed a cancerous "Post-Meritocracy Manifesto", I decided to help those who are pressured to provide a Code of Conduct for their service, project or conference but would like a sane one which doesn't involving bending over with a big red BULLSEYE around your arsehole.
Freelance developers, how do you get clients?
I am developing apps/websites with a friend and so far er have found our clients mainly on project-listing sites (sites like freelancer.com). My experience is though, that it always becomes a price-race, and with many projects only being small static websites, it just doesn't seem that this is the way to Go.
So if any of you have suggestions on how and where to find larger/more serious clients that will be much appreciated - it should be said that we already have quite a few projects to show in our portfolio, so I think we are ready to take on some larger projects6
Okay, I realize that it doesn't mean anything, but I've been working on trying to solve this freaking Codility challenge for like a week and while I had a solution that would give me a silver award (the tests that weren't performance-based had me getting the right results, I just timed-out for performance tests), I really wanted to get a gold one. And I FINALLY DID.
Just in time for having to do a technical phone screen for a company. Maybe I'll go into it feeling like a competent programmer.7
Anybody have recommendations for a laptop? A want a laptop to finish high school with but more importantly something that can be my primary computer in college for school, coding, and gaming (doesn't need to run really intense games like CoD)
•15 inch screen
•i5 or i7 processor
•500 gb storage or more
•6 gb RAM or more
•decent front webcam
•good battery life
•$600 or less
•NOT a MacBook
For those of you who want something comparable to the full Dark themes people have used on Linux for years here's a high contrast windows theme that doesn't look like garbage. I'm absolutely in love with it and will never go back. It's my favorite theme since the Windows classic theme. Also it's just a theme profile, so no worries about modding files or installing some malware infested theme manager.
I love building stuff and when i have something that I'm really into, it's hard to concentrate on the boring stuff i need to finish first.
Sometimes i just need to do what i feel like doing, doesn't matter. No, i won't go to bed, no i can't do the other stuff, i need to do that!1
How realistic is it to expect a single developer to build a site that functions like booking.com or similar online hotel booking system from scratch? Doesn't have to be on par with those popular sites.
Is this something you would be able to do alone?
I got asked about doing it and I haven't responded a clear yes or no. I'm not sure if I'm under estimating the technical difficulty.7
Ok so there are a lot of things out there like #WhyIUseLinux, well as a Linux lover that is stuck using windows, I say we start a 'why I use windows' discussion.
For me, I'm stuck on windows simply because the game development engine I use is only on windows and mac and doesn't seem to play nicrly when run on a VM, if the software was released on Linux I would swap over in a heart beat!5
Sr. Management gives talk about leadership. What he/she doesn't understand is that leadership is like Fight Club.
The first rule of leadership is that you do not talk about leadership.
The second rule of leadership is that you DO NOT talk about leadership!5
A personal peer-to-peer music streaming app that doesn't need cloud storage. It's like Spotify + Resilio Sync. So, i can access all of my song from the connected device.5
All I wish is that AI doesn't fuck my girlfriend/wife. I will implement very strict rules.1
I have a mantra: don't get too attached to the shit you build
That mantra is about to be thoroughly tested - we might be just about to trash one year worth of work coz the 3rd party we were working with doesn't look like they'll be able handle our load2
Googling how to electromagnetically shield a espruino project from neodymium magnets over lunch, and that leads on a trail of manipulating and directing em fields...
"What are you doing? That doesn't look anything like a binary tree structure in Java... What the hell is all that?"
"Uhm... Personal research?"
Trying to setup a staging server boss says just use AWS, system admin doesn't like that thought because it doesn't involve him so waited all day for 3 VM's and still not ready... All I need is 3 blank CoreOS VMs nothing fancy like even doing the cloud config no. Anyone else has colleagues scared of moving out of the private high maintenance servers in the basement?6
I think i can #Rant on behalf of that Engineer (trollyboy)...doesn't look like he's enjoying himself at Zürich Airport! Captions welcome!2
I keep phones for two years, or try to anyway. Later this year I will hit that two year mark, and rather than excitement at the idea of getting a new phone, I find myself thinking that there's nothing out there that excites me at all. And also, my current phone is in no way deficient. It doesn't hold a charge like when it was new, but that's totally normal, and as degraded as it may be, it's still not a problem at all.
A powerful phone with a snapdragon and 6 or more GB of memory, that measures under 5" and doesn't have some bullshit OEM skin on it. To my knowledge, it doesn't exist.6
Finally end of the week. All that is left is a little polishing over the weekend for Monday release. Like get the lastest code from all the developers, put it together and hope it somehow works and fix whatever doesn't :-/
My fucking internet is so fucking bad, I get 2K/s download. I would like to know what the fuck is up with that but the isp's website doesn't load. I have no mobile data left and WhatsApp messsnges take minutes to send. For fucks sake this doesn't feel like 21st century germany.1
Well, we have a designer/front-ender who's forced to work the same way the devs work (local development environment), yet he doesn't understand a single thing he's doing.
I'm pretty sure he's never going to understand it, and I feel like he's better off just doing UI/UX, he's pretty good at that!1
I've got a bit funny situation.
I wanted to make small application to speed up my dad's job, app is about duplicating models in X website (I don't want to say directly what website).
So I started by checking it has API, Yup, It has, but you need OAuth ID, to get it you need to write to support.
So I did it, my mail was something like that: "Hello, can I get access to your API, I want to make app to duplicate models with same settings, Thanks"
I've got an answer like that "Hello, our website doesn't have duplicating feature."
My reaction was: Wtf? I know it doesn't have that feature, That's why I want to make it. How did he get hired as technical support?
Maybe it's not the most exciting story, but I thought it could be intresting :)
Why do package maintainers stop answering and go silent?!
I've waited for more than two weeks on acceptance on my PR, the maintainers hasn't been active and I've even notified them of my worries.. But so far no activity.
Why the fuck does a package like date-fns have maintainers that doesn't answer? Furthermore, I can see one of them making private contributions on Github..
I need this package to help on another package to finish my project 😭8
So, in C#, are there any tips or guidelines as to how to write "clean" multiline strings? I mean, imo it doesn't look as neat when the code looks like:
static string kindOfLongVariableName = @"First line of string.
Second line of string...";
With the first line sort of hovering on the side. What I'm used to is with Python where you can just:
variable_name = """'\
And use the '\' to escape the newline, but that obviously doesn't work in C#. Can anyone point me in a direction to start looking? The docs are a bit confusing and not very beginner friendly. :/20
Fucking MQTT, go suck some dicks! Can't get that pice of shit to work, sending connect and publish works like a charm but somehow I won't get an acknowledge message which means the publish doesn't go through!
On the brigt side: another oportunity to fire up wireshark and compare my software to other tools.
Anyone expirienced wit MQTT or thingstream.io
P.s. there support also can go and choke on some dicks!5
Im on a Team Project on my University, I'm so salty because a girl on my team yesterday got angry with me because I committed when she was working on something, and that she doesn't like how I code.
2 hours later she made a giant commit with so many unnecessary code and removed working functionality and changed to a nonsense interface all because she was mad with me, now the code doesn't work and it's ugly and she is mad.
I cannot handle it 😭3
So i ranted about how bad the snapchat app was in terms of design and performance a few days ago here and at a couple of other places and the general conscience was that I should use it for a few days and i would like it.
Well, here's what i have to say. IT STILL SUCKS!
I tried to use it every day to keep up with what others are doing and sometimes try to post but i really don't like his bad the app is. It doesn't make me want to use it. Its a battery hog. It fucking drinks through my battery like nobody's business. The v10 update made it a bit better but it still sucks.
I still don't like the UX design but I have come to hate it less. It still sucks though.
I still don't like that there isn't a proper way to discover people. The "discover" tab is just paid advertisement.5
People in this discussion will refer to my classmates doing their project we were allowed to choose like 3 months ago and back then I already told them they won't ever manage to make it work in time.
People: "yo could you help real fast"
Me: "aaah not again but okay why not"
People: "here's the code"
Me: "the fuck is this? What is it supposed to do?"
People: "ummm it should doooo eeeerrr... Like this and .... Yeah we don't know. The output should look like that but it doesn't"
Me: "the fuck did you even try to do. That'll never work. And I told you the same thing like 3 months ago when you just chose the project. Just go and use some random math lib you find"
Their code seriously made no sense at all. Parsing substring within like 5 nested loops and like 20vars called "s1" and "theString" and what not.
No no no, that's not for what I came to linux.
Opened couple of tasks including one browser with < 10 tabs, sublime, skype and it starts fucking hang.
I have 8g ram, core i3 .
I'm using Ubuntu 16 lts. Its such a shame6
I'm building an app with Cordova and everything was working great, tested on multiple devices and everything worked perfectly. Until my boss called me to say that some interfaces don't work on his phone. Needless to say Android 4.3 doesn't like the "new" syntax of flex and just tells me that I can fuck off. Well Android fuck off too.2
Devrant = The home I've been looking for, my whole life.
Please let me be small so that it doesn't become like SO someday :)
Fuck. I really hate it when someone has a domain I'd like to have, and doesn't do shit with it. Come on! A webpage that says "Live soon"?!
It's like having a subscription to the gym and never go to the gym. Total waste of money and opportunity for someone else to use the domain, just for the sake of "There is the slightest possibility that I maybe want to do something with this domain in the future".
Fuck this shit.4
Bought a 1080p portable monitor
They sent a 768p screen...
What even is that resolution
And if you put it up on its side like advertised you can't see shit if if you look at an angle
Also the fucking cable doesn't fit right and disconnects if you blow at it
Piece of shit - last time I bought on Amazon4
Are we at the point where the MVP of every dev app (at the very least) should have a dark mode?!
I have seen app reviews that literally said: "Great app! Love it! Giving a 4 because it doesn't have dark mode!"
WCF doesn't like me adding to lists...
I have to make an uno game that supports multiplayer with WCF for school...
I have a player class that has a list of card classes.
I have a function called dealHand, it adds Cards to the hand list...
I also have a callback function for updating my wpf gui...
For whatever reason if when the gui calls dealhand and I try to use myList.add(new Card()) then the updategui function in my wpf client doesn't fire...
But if I take a seperate method called makeHand which returns a list of cards, and just do myList = makeHand() then that works fine...
Never been so baffled/cursed so much at code before... Is there something about Lists that WCF doesn't like? Seriously... was weird...
Hopefully that was somewhat coherent...4
Can we just stop giving attention to Facebook already? All this media hype around it is just advertisement for them, Fuckerberg doesn't give a shit we already know that, and it's not like the senate is really gonna dish out heavy restrictions because they're too reliant on it themselves.
Don't like it? Don't make an account, don't install it, don't give it access. Simple as that.1
I'm trying to convince my dad to switch to the Linux. Everyday he complains about his laptop being slow (although it has pretty much same specs like my laptop), the forced updates on Windows 10, how long it takes to load programs and stuff. He only uses Opera and LibreOffice for work, he doesn't have iPhone so he's not locked by iTunes. Perfect case study!
Yet every time I tell him that Linux doesn't force updates on you, runs faster and has all the software he needs, he says that "he's not a programer like I am". Then I reply to him "and that's a thing! Linux Mint for example doesn't even require to open terminal" (plus few years back he wanted to try it out)...
Any tips boys and girls? Should I give up or not? I mean, forcing the change will not do, but I also don't want to hear complains about Windows every day.14
Do you ever feel like coding is like gambling, when working on personal projects? "Just one more small change, I'm sure it'll work after that"...suddenly it's 3am, the damn thing still doesn't run, I have a meeting at 9, and I hate myself.1
Doesn't it suck that we still need to write an app multiple times for different operating systems? I mean for me it seems like how the web was a decade ago. I think we deserve better!
While there are cross-platform frameworks, I feel like the OS vendors must work together to make native development less of a pain in the ass.8
Why do people get an idea that Ctrl+Alt+[character] is a good combination for keyboard shortcuts? Just because your keyboard layout doesn't have a special character for Ctrl+Alt+Z, it doesn't mean other people don't! Did you ever stop to think that more than half buttons on your keyboard already have a Ctrl+Alt (~AltGr) binding, so maybe, just fucking maybe, other keyboard layouts could have that kind of bindings for other buttons as well? You've got 38 published works, you boast your years of experience, yet you can't fucking consider some basic real-world problems when working on a piece of software!
God I fucking hate people like these, with their PhDs and no actual hands-on experience, they're always so smug about their work and expect you to pay them millions, but fail to understand that details like those are why people pick you instead of some cheap student, and that's where their salary comes from.7
I crash and burn during coding interview questions. Every. Time.
I just do. It's terrible. It doesn't matter how much I tell myself to slow down and just think it through first before coding...I end up coding first after a short period of thinking about it. Don't get it right, freak out...and well I crash and burn.
It bums me out. The worst part is that I'm so distraught about it that I take a break, and sit down and solve it in like 10 minutes...of course it doesn't matter since it happens after the interview.
I just need to practice solving these things to get that mindset right.3
Yes I've won a few coding contests. Yes I've emulated clusters using Docker and Kubernetes. Doesn't mean that I can simulate machine learning over network like taking knife out of butter2
When you copy&paste a code snippet from a forum into your IDE like VS and suddenly - for some reason - after every single line comes an empty line that you first have to manually delete so that your OCD doesn't bite off your own head.4
Anyone that has careless coworkers on a common project? Like my stuff is ready, working and tested, meanwhile many are still scratching their heads on why their code doesn't work.
//we are a group of internship workers2
At the end of the day...does the end consumer REALLY give a shit about what language you program in? As long as the app fucking does what it's supposed to right? I feel like this is a never ending rant for me because it seems like programmers will never understand that it doesn't matter as long as the end consumer / client is happy.2
When you're working on a project by yourself and you make certain choices and someone comes along thinking they know your project better than you do and starts acting like they're smart while saying stupid shit that doesn't even make sense.
In that frustrated moment where the code is right but doesn't work...
Boss is a non-technical guy who's like I don't care just get it done and I'm just sitting here staring at the screen not knowing what to do...1
Either I am too sensitive with my name or I just can't stop laughing when someone keep misspelled my English name, "Michael" into "Micheal".
I know it doesn't sound like a big deal but... *eye-roll*
Anyway, I am still wondering that what wording or how does it take for them to accidentally typed from 'ae' into 'ea'..?
Super curious here.3
first time working with android. using threads debugging is not working like it should. app works great when I'm not debugging. code doesn't get executed WTF i really need that stressball FML
There's nothing quite like an app force closing for no apparent reason, and no error log info.
Just spent an hour figuring out that one of the device I test on doesn't like linking GLSL shader programs if it contains a loop even know every other devices I've tested on are totally fine with it. 😑
If boss doesn't like you, what would you do ?
1- try to make him happy with your work?
2- search for new job.
p.s boss insulting too much after anything goes wrong.
What is the professional way to deal with that kind of situation?14
I hate that feeling when I say "I think I could fix it" and eventually accepting that I have to ask for help, and maybe pay for it. That feeling tastes like defeat, and it's the same way people feels when they need my services. I think this should help me be more sympathetic with clients, but it doesn't.
The moment when you get an answer that makes you feel like your question was legitimate at SO but ultimately the answer doesn't really solve your problem....
Is there any multi server monitoring software that doesn't open a port for itself? I am about to just write one, but it's fucking annoying that theres nothing like it out there, where you just install a service per server, that uploads its data (cpu, ram etc) to a central server without opening itself to the whole fucking internet.6
I would get a testing job and thus exploit weaknesses in the ai- created software.
After finding such weaknesses, I would write AI debilitating viruses and WannaCry-like ransomware until I get my job back!
If that doesn't work out, I'd go into linguistics.1
I currently have an LG G4, which was a flagship phone of its time.
Now I'm considering buying a new one because this phone doesn't seem to like WiFi and my wifi doesn't seem to like the phone.
I don't think I want another flagship phone again, since all I've used this one for is email, telegram, conference apps, netradio, banking, devrant, Google music, pedometer. In the beginning I liked it had FM radio, but I'm not even using that anymore. And never used it for gaming (no blizzard, I don't want Diablo on mobile)
I don't want to throw lotta money at it.
So some of my requirements are: rootable, if possible changeable battery, great camera, latest Android version, exercise tracker of some sort.
Any alternative ideas for phones to look at or website that can give a list based on selections?10
I use documentation to develop a connection to a feature (connection that was said to be done, but whatever.)
There is an example in the documentation of implementation.
But that example is, like I like to say, bullshit-esque.
In the implementation, the code doesn't work, and there is another way of implenting that connection. But the thing is, it uses a variable that was never declared in the example, neither in the full page. They just made it pop-up from nowhere like a deus ex machina.
Gimme a table so I can flip it.3
Me: The client is getting hosting from a different company than we suggested since they require you to pay via bank and she doesn't consider that safe.
Co-worker dude: But aren't banks like the safest way of paying?
Me: Well I guess not in the Filipines (where the client is from)
Huawei published an ad stating their Mate 20 Pro smartphone has been voted phone of the year 2018 in my country.
The only problem is the survey they refer to has been done by a completely unknown mobile news website. That site looks a lot like some DIY blog from 2010 (it even uses FB comments widget), and with 10 post per month it definitely doesn't get much traffic. Talk about integrity...6
All of my programming knowledge (more like 95% of it) have been gathered by myself. I've started learning during secondary school - the basics everyone has to go through. But it was so awesome that I wanted more. So I've started digging through vast space of internets and books only to find that I know very little. I've had help in the university and high school (the other 5%), but it wasn't enough.
The best thing is - the feeling has never worn off. And I still want more, because it feels like learning magic - the only difference is magic doesn't exist 😃
I was on an 8h bus ride yesterday, and thought "Hey, I take my Laptop with me, then I can do some tech." Normally I have my Laptop on a docking station, and use a nice big keyboard. End of the story; thinking of using the small Laptop keyboard demotivated me so much, that I didn't do anything but sleeping on the bus. Am I the only one who doesn't like small Laptops?2
So my friends USB drive suddenly doesn't work. It shows up in Windows' device manager (with no exclamation sign) but not in My Computer or even Disk Management (So I can't partition it) Reinstalling drivers doesn't work either. When trying to mount it in Linux, Linux complains that it can't see the drive. fsck and gparted don't read it either, but it shows up in lsblk. Dmesg complains it can't read the partition table (error -110). Any of you guys have bright ideas? Nothing like this has shown up in SO before so I've asked in both here and SO. Any ideas?12
- Dealing only with your own code
- Having enough time to improve and refactor your code whenever you want
- Bug reports are detailed af and not just like "doesn't work"
- Choosing the IDE (and OS maybe, too) by yourself
- Having enough time for bugfixes, implementations
- Software is ready, when you want it, not anyone else.
- Visiting trainings or seminars to improve your skills whenever you want
Yeah, that would be pretty awesome.3
The fact that I am forced to use xCode more and more again, really gets me. I miss vsCode (especially monokai pro) a lot already, but the phonegap developer app simply doesn't work with things like touchid to preview the app.
I just recently stumbled over qutebrowser, a keyboard-centered FOSS-browser. It can be used with vim-commands exclusively, so no mouse needed. The only downside is that it doesn't seem to support plugins. Perfect for people like me who keep losing their cursor 😅4
eBay's APIs make me want to cry.
Take the sandbox for example:
- Every time you log into a session, it logs you out.
- When you create an order (eventually!) and want to retrieve it, tough shit it doesn't feel like doing that today.
- Functionality both exists and doesn't exist at the same time on both the LIVE and Sandbox APIs. I don't know how they've managed to get quantum computers in their server room, but their GOD DAMN API LIBRARIES ARE NOT THE BEST USE CASE FOR QUANTUM COMPUTING!!
I don't know if I despise eBay or Magento more...
My aim for this year is to change to a job which doesn't feel like that movie groundhog Day.
The current project I'm on makes me want to switch careers.3
I kind of admire that python doesn't work properly unless you indent and keep your programming neat, but some people tend to just like their programming without indentations. Wew idk2
Hey guys quick simple question for you guys who use storage solutions like google drive, one drive, dropbox, etc: what's a feature you'd really love to have that the cloud storage you are using doesn't have.
I want to compile a series of answers on this topic.7
Damned XAMPP doesn't want to run MySQL. Can't access phpmyadmin on local machine. Fixed localhost problems now it shows me 404! Edited all ports in config files for Apache, killed some tasks working on that port, stopped running some services - still nothing. Now found out there are some db files missing for MySQL via error log so I need to fix that plus 404 on my localhost. Don't feel like I'm close to solve all that. Half of a day wasted with no results. I need a cold shower and a gallon of coffee.1
Our systems lead is trying to tell our software person how much adding unit tests would cost. It also sounds like he wants TDD to be added in after the fact. And he's bitching because the software guy won't move forward with it until we get it with the customer. He also wants all of them automated, but doesn't want to accept that that is going to cost a lot. Like a lot, a lot. This is a guy who doesn't know algorithms (had to explain dykstra to him), doesn't understand the tech stack we are using (I had to explain .net versions, the JIT compiler, and garbage collection to him), and seems not to understand hardware (I had to explain floating point math to him), yet he feels qualified to tell us how long it is going to take us to implement automated unit tests for major, complex features.
Looks like there are new horribly regurgitated packages in python nowadays which somehow my boss keeps finding I don't know how , which have shorter commands that take more and more time to run because they are just attaching these smaller tags to bigger tags and so on.
And my boss doesn't understand that there's such a thing called as overhead time ffs and it takes the same fucking time to run that same shit and maybe more because the new packages don't have a proper fucking API.2
Look, I get that you want your front to be really, really, reallyyyy fancy! But when that fanciness comes at a price, more specifically speed! Then we're going to have a problem. Look... Not everyone has super fast internet, and when your website thinks it's better to load the entire website and not the sign in first, then we're going to have issues.
No it doesn't work that way. I don't want to be mounted by ads, Let me IN quickly and quietly, and we won't have any issues.
TLDR Front End developers like squeaky shiny and clean, but neglect the sign-in dialog
I'll just change which directory this thingy uses from here to there..
How hard can that be !
First, the shortcut to that other place, is no longer valid.
No problem, I'll just put in a new shortcut.
Of course, luckily I can remember you have to do it a certain way, or Windows doesn't work correctly..
I accidentality click on the old shortcut, so whilst I wait for Windows to tell me it doesn't work, instead of it doing that, it decides to crash the OS and I have to reboot..
Note, this machine doesn't like rebooting !!!
As such, I rarely ever ever reboot it !
So, an hour later it boots correctly..
I change the shortcut, everything is fine, it seems..
Now, I just have to move some files from here to there..
1+ hour estimate..
45 minutes to go now !4
how come I can't ++ my own rant or comment
Like I'm sick of people telling me I can't like myself.
I can fucking like myself if I want to.
It's my body my life.
We live in the age of self love and all that other shit.
Let me ++ myself.
Oh wait I figured it out.
++ing yourself might lead to spam rants where people post a hundred rants and ++ themselves for points.
I propose that ++ing ourselves become legal but it doesn't effect our total ++ rank9
I don't know why you expect your website to be done in a month when you can't even fucking decide what it should be.
I CAN'T READ YOUR MIND ASSHOLE.
Don't tell me that I did it wrong or it doesn't look right when you said that you wanted it like that.
I wasn't hired as a web developer, I've done high voltage electrical work, machinist work and repair of the shit you can't even take care of. All for 15usd a hour. If they don't keep their promise to bump the pay....1
A very satisfactory debugging happened to me not long ago, when I discovered that assignement in C++ and Python doesn't work exactly the same.. I never took courses in Python so I had no way of knowing. I'm a self taught programmer, so I also always feel a bit insecure about my skills.
What made it really satisfying was that when I finally googled it, it was only to confirm the "diagnosis" that I had already made. I felt like years of struggles got me somewhere, now I feel a bit less insecure about my knowledge and skills in programming. :)
I don't know why but I think that I'm the only one that doesn't like material design. I get the concept and can see why Google came up with the whole material design thing, but it doesn't move me, no matter how clever it is.
Am I right? Do you hate material design too? Although hate is a strong word, so should I ask are you ambivalent to it too?3
I'm starting to think my server doesn't like me. I start it and it's telling me on pages that I have an error on line 0, sometimes it'll shut down, and other times it works perfectly but I can't remotely access it through FTP........LIKE, GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!
My mom doesn't even know what I'm doing. She doesn't even asked much, cause she's from the old generation, and just accept the things as it is. My mom doesn't even send messages. She use phone just for calls.
My siblings didn't know that I am a dev, they never asked.
My other half? She always seeks my help on IT things. And I always explain to her bit by bit, and looks like she understand a bit or two. I just hope that she didn't bored. Oh yeah, we're not married yet.
Got stuck on a Terraform issue, so I checked in my branch and sent it to my manager. He didn't offer me any suggestions at all to my code, but instead sent me a way more crazy complicated template he wrote that doesn't help me in any way what so ever with my issue. He's also just shitty at explaining things. I'm not sure I like the idea of a team lead whose 90% remote when the rest of us are here.
Since I can't work without internet on my laptop, I started thinking of a comparison I could give, to clarify that me being a programmer, doesn't mean I can fix anything that uses electricity.
My answer so far:
"Asking me to fix that, is like trying to ask an accountant to go be a lawyer for some criminal."1
- Change this, change that too, oh and that too.
* Ok, will do ( however unlikely it's going to be finished correctly, as you didn't consult me before or listen to me about the impact this might have )
- ( just stfu and do it )
Sometime at or after important cutoff:
- Hey this doesn't show up, is that right
* Yeah, you wanted too many things changed at once + fix it and notice a stupid error like an && switched with a ||, or other models that don't know about change x yet
I have a friend named Rich. To protect his identity we will refer to him as Rich.
Rich: I don't like Dick.
Rich: The name, I don't like the name Dick. <Rich then goes on to explain why he doesn't like the name Dick. How he got the name Rich. Like 5 or 10 minutes of this>
Me: <Trying not to laugh, because he is naive enough to not know the other connotations of not liking Dick>
Rich: And that is why I don't like Dick.
Me: <Smiles and nods. This was deep and personal to him.>
Things I wanted to say:
"I am glad we got this out in the open."
"Well, I don't like Dick either."2
After days of debugging server errors by tonnes of back-and-forth emailing with my hosting company, we finally arrived on the conclusion that I need to upgrade my account to be able to successfully execute python scripts.
This is apparently because when uploading files, they get encoded into a format that python doesn't like. APPARENTLY the ONLY solution is to create the files with the command line. How convenient that the command line is not made available to plebs not renting their premium package.
I guess this is what you get when paying the equivalent of $10 per year for web hosting.1
So I'm in my computer programming class and we're using netbeans and my friend next to me (who wants to code but like he doesn't know any basics) is like why isn't my code working, after a while I figured out that his .Java file wasn't in the project directory he was working in -_-
I like the look and feel of gnome, but its extension system is SO FUCKING BROKEN. Like ho-ly-shit... You need a fucking browser extension to install or update them! Since not too long you can also do that via 'tweaks', but guess what: IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK.
Now that I think about it, if I need all these extensions to make gnome nicer, maybe gnome isn't all that good. Any suggestions for other wm's?1
Devs are divided on gitlab blunder, some appreciate their honesty and transparency while other are either cursing them or grateful that they didn't use it. But think like this :
You own a MacBook and you love it like your baby, if someone drops it, there is good probability it won't break but it will sure give you a fucking heart attack. You won't ever let that person touch your MacBook.
Gitlab just did that. They scared the hell out of the developers.
I hope everyone learns from this and it doesn't happen to anyone in future.4
I woke up to find my internet connection failed overnight. Thanks for nothing BT.
Before the brain engaged and whilst waiting for the router to restart, I thought to myself let's check devRant... DOH!
However, doing that allowed me to discover that the devRant's app, at least on iOS, doesn't display an error in this case. I've attached what it currently looks like to me but think we can come up with a better solution together.9
I'm working on a project using certain APIs to access some web services. I spent almost an entire day trying to make it work, but I always get an error message. When I try to contact the customer support they tell me something like:"Yeah we're gonna look into it. Meanwhile try this other endpoint". I didn't ask for that(besides this alternative endpoint doesn't do the same thing). I just want to know why my code doesn't work, even though I thoroughly followed the docs!
I would like to say I'm able to by taking decent breaks, and by seeing friends after work and on weekends, but by the time I leave work I usually am done with interacting with people, outside of perhaps messaging.
So in that sense, Discord had been my saviour in that I can stay connected to people, but in a way that doesn't bring other aspects of social media into it.
The one thing I need, a "LATIN SMALL LETTER REVERSED C WITH DIAERESIS" doesn't seem to exist but "LATIN SMALL LETTER C WITH DIAERESIS" the one thing that I don't need, does D:
Like there's a god dang sideways u with an umlaut (or diaeresis I guess) but not a reversed c̈? pls9
Manager comes to co-worker, looking like he's in a hurry for a feature to be done...
Manager: Did you finish?
Manager: what were you working on?
Co-worker, me, everyone in that room: 🤨
I think he just grew a habit of being a rushing asshole that he doesn't even notice what he's in a rush for anymore
Found someone who had a similar idea then me.😮
(Except, mine was 2 years ago and I'm working on it since)😎
Thought i'd be nice, talk or write with him about stuff.
Went to his github repo and opened up a few issues about certain design decisions and problems that he and I face because of our environment.
His reaction was mostly like "meh, doesn't matter, to individual, trivial, ...
I think he didn't even try to understand me or what I meant, or what that implies.
I don't know if I behaved like a dick, or if he is.😑
Just tried to be nice and Interact in a usefull way.
Do you sometimes have days at work where you feel completely useless for the company. Like you can't get anything done, and you try but it doesn't work. I just want another task that I have knowledge about. Should I just straight up tell this to my mentor that I want to do something I have knowledge about? I feel really stuck10
TWENTY GIGABYTES!?!? I go to install Xamarin so I could work on a cross-platform project. My C drive is minimal in size and Windows doesn't let you install programs on the D drive. This is madd a billion times worse because Windows 10 treats secondary uard drives just like SD cards! Seriously? TWENTY for that framework?2
I recently un-boxed a pixel 2, though great on the specs side, I wouldn't buy it because of the looks and weight,
It just doesn't feel great in the hand, I mean if am spending that much, I should feel am holding a premium device at hand, but It feels like a dummy,
Camera might be great, but the bezel was too big
When all the feedback you get from a damned class diagram was "Ok looks good :)"
Not sure if good because it doesn't look like a complicated cobweb anymore or because the relationships established were right - though I doubt you can say that just by looking for a mere 30 seconds at a class diagram with more than 20 classes.
Of course iPhone connected to the Mac with iTunes on doesn't let you grab photos and videos from it, because why should it? It's not like feature that even feature phones have.
Just had the worst time ever. Tried to register to a web portal of my ISP. Couldn't even get to the dashboard. It randomly redirects back to login page. Doesn't save info. Asks for info already given in the profile when I try to add my connection and then says info doesn't match with what's in the profile.. WTF!!! I just copy pasted it from the profiles info page. :/ just gave up after trying for the 50th time. I just can't understand how someone could design something with this level of shitty user experiance.
I would just like to say fuck you to the assholes who designed that worthless portal. :/
So, I have a little issue with a program on Github.
- little ttest script in PHP PDO: works
- MySQL-CLI: works
- the program itself: doesn't work
In all 3 cases, the credentials are the same (checked a thousand times)
maintainer be like: "this issue is most likely caused by invalid credentials or the user that doesn't have the rights"
Not the case since the other 2 test cases did succeed --'6
I kind of wish there was an option for a small brown dog for my avatar.
My dog is a small brown mutt (I think that's the word? She doesn't have a breed) and right now there's no dog that looks like her 😭6
It seems like most places I've interviewed at asked if I use repository design pattern.
Am I the weird one that just doesn't use repository design pattern (in laravel)?
Interviewer: "If you don't use repository design pattern, where do you write your business logic? In the controller?"
Me: "In a class of its own?"8
I got a message today from a recruiter that included this line: "The firm believes in their product with such confidence, that they are willing to provide equity to anyone that comes aboard."
Ummmmmm..... Doesn't that mean the opposite pretty much??? Sounds like they are willing to liberally give up equity. Either way I though that was a really non-sensical thing to include.6
Last day, Alot of stuff horrified me with this client.
The worst was probably:
Had to send an email to open a ticket, you can't just create the ticket...
No knowledge at all of git: they were opening a repo test for every repos... (`repo.git` and `repo-test.git`, you know to do 'like a branch')
AAaaaah Only 1 hours.
At least my other client doesn't do shit like that :D
So it turns out the site my app scrapes for those NSFW pictures actually scrapes another site.
Now it just seems to mirror that site like a proxy though doesn't work well... pictures not loading, links not working.
But then at the bottom there's like a Copyright tag which shows the other site's name.
I wonder if perhaps he got tired of playing cat and mouse with me and just said ah screw it... I give up, here's the source, go scrape them.13
Submenu Boards doesn't show in Firefox 45.5.0 when viewing a single issue. This is really frustrating as I can't move quickly between the sprint board and a specific issue. What also sucks about jira is that there is no way to report bugs like this (perhaps Atlassian sincerely believe that they never have any bugs in their products), leaving devrant as the only resort to let out steam ;)
Code doesn't lie, but sometimes you really feel like it is. Just curious, is there anyone here that has ever actually found a bug with a platform?2
Kind of a followup on my earlier rant, it seems like my "teacher" doesn't even really know C++. He replied to me that "the code doesn't work", which is probably because the code needs the compiler flag for c++11 (I barely even know what I'm talking about here), which he would've known *if he looked at the error message*?!
Have I mentioned enough yet that I STARTED LEARNING C++ LITERALLY ABOUT 2.5 WEEKS AGO?!?! OTL5
I keep getting emails from people I don't know that are like conversations, leading me to believe they aren't sent to the rightful owner. Most of the time, I see the email has uppercase at some places (when mine doesn't).
I just wish the companies could put a mark somewhere in their page when entering an uppercase email that mentions the fact that it doesn't change shit, getting really annoyed from receiving these mails not directed to me 😒
Managed to apply Particle.js to my personal website today. It's a lot of fun to play with and you can make some pretty interesting effects. Recommend it to everybody.
Only problem is that Chrome doesn't seem to like this library very much. It doesn't start on Chrome unless your website is on a server (you can always use Live Server or something like that from your code editor). Or you can always try a different browser. It seems to be only a Chrome problem.
Can't wait to get my site live and hear what you guys think. Though, don't expect too much please.8
Even when the code is right, it's wrong. Like when you are fixing bugs:
"damn, this variable doesn't look like it belongs in this part of the code", but when you look further into it you see that is correct and you continue with the bug and have no idea what the next step should be.1
So basically a client's website still works on PHP 5.4. I manage the site's content which works on an old server that takes around 5-6 seconds each time I work on the backend (WordPress).
Asked the client's sysadmin to upgrade but he doesn't want in case some old and non updated plugin would break the site. (Which did about a year ago and I had to fix it).
Feels like working on a minefileld.
i swear sometimes windows can just piss you off. like why. luvit.exe is in the SAME folder as octi.lua. command prompt sees it and runs it, but powershell apparently doesn't like that and wants to make things complicated.
also inb4 im called a total idiot2
Do you know when you're testing your code and anything works as it should, even when everything looks all right? I dunno how about you, but... everytime this happens, I just change var/function name to something like "fuckingCalculate()" or "suckerAvg". It's similar as punching an old TV everytime it stops, or kicking a door that doesn't open.
Once I change the var/function to It's previous name, everything stops working as before.
What a shame...
A friend of mine came to ask help for their capstone project.
Adding AI feature to a capstone project that doesn't solve the problem.
Their professor wants to add that because IT students can do it by just downloading a package.
Like, are you serious??
They teach "Hello World" and expects an output of very complex application.
For those of you that do use Firefox developer edition, any of you noticed that the last versions are quiet buggy around development tools, like css preview of a class that doesn't update when you select a different piece of HTML?1
I need some advice, you guys.
I'm weeks away from graduating from my code school and working on a capstone project with a group and there are several people who I'm having a hard time following their code.
No comments, no documentation, just "30 hour sessions" and opinionated, undocumented code that doesn't mesh with the project plan 100%. It works, it get's the job done, but it's over complicated, undocumented and hard to follow.
Starting to feel like the 3rd wheel in a 4 person group because I'm the only one that is having a problem and I'm not sure how to get them to document their code for me. They try to explain it and just end up literally reading their code, which doesn't really help.
I feel like I'm working in a group of individuals who don't really want to work together and I'm worried it's going to be a problem.1
Some day ago I ranted that I needed to program Angular2 but my keyboard didn't have the ` symbol.
Now I decided to remap the useless £ to `. I wasted like 2 hours but it seems that doesn't exist any way to do it. I downloaded like 10 application but nothing, I can't remap a second-function key.
Oh my god, who invented the italian keyboard needs to burn in the hell10
Should I install Elememtary OS (Loki) ?
Anyone that uses eOS, why do you use it? Any problems with it? Gimme advice.
I tried it on Virtualbox but apparently it doesn't like that very much. Files didn't have a search function, bit hard to customise.
I'm willing to try, everyone seems to be using it, I assume it shouldn't be that bad.9
Fuckin damn it Google! I setup a transparent proxy and for some fucking reason Google home doesn't like that at all. I think I have a fix but it's a real fucking pain in the ass. I call your support people who I specifically tell that I'm running a fucking proxy and they tell me that I need to talk to their Google WiFi team. It has nothing Todo with my fucking wifi bitch. Its your price of shit price of crap hardware that doesn't like fucking proxies.
I'll update everyone what the fix is when I find it.
Btw, this is a HTTPS transparent proxy and HTTP transparent proxy running on my pFSense firewall box.3
What are your favorite Java books? I'd like something that goes from the ground up. It doesn't have to be for a beginner programmer, but someone new to Java.5
In university, would it be better to study civil engineering for my bachelor and then move to computer science for my master, or would it be better to start with computer science in the first place?
With a bachelor in civil engineering I can always go do something else if computer science doesn't turn out, but I fear that it also might be a lot harder (to study). I'd like to hear your advice on this issue.2
I really like their laptops, or i used to. My HP lappy has a realtek WiFi card and realtek doesn't provide support for Linux. I think I also hate realtek. Furthermore, my laptop starts throttling because of dust being collected. Some people that I know have older Dell laptops that work better than mine1
So can you guys name one Linux distro that doesn't come preloaded with bloat, i mean Linux is better than windows since you have control, but i don't want to have fire fox out of the box i don't want fkin libre office can't we have a distro like arch but we don't have to go through the lengthy installation process. Maybe throw in the drivers and a bare bone DE of choice and that's it12
I'll know when I've succeeded in establishing my career when I'm able to get a job at Google that allows me to support a household. It just doesn't seem like I have the qualifications yet to find a position that's not an internship. So in the meantime, nose back to the grindstone.
Just needed to put this out there.2
freaking once you work with office, pages, google drive.
freakin disgusted you are
freaking video holographic documentation for the foking win
okay also not even that but. yes I am disgusted how nicely it doesn't work. it !works like a charm8
I just finished typing a config file and ran into a problem with being able to save the file. I highlight the lines in vi yank them close vi re run it as sudo to see if that would resolve the issue with being unable to save read "E353: Nothing in register". Remember yank doesn't function like copy-paste on windows so it doesn't save to clip board.
Well there goes 20 minutes of work!
Why would you use graphdb for "facebook-like" notification system?
It doesn't work that way, dude..
