I just discovered ctrl+r in the Linux terminal.
Mother of god this fucker speeds up my workflow!
A massive amount of kudos to the person who made this 😍50 -
This made my day.
This really makes me wanna go back on Twitter just to follow the guy who posted it.3 -
Welcome to the internet of 2019 after Article 13!
FUCK ARTICLE 13
MOST OF THE MEMBERS OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT WHO VOTED FOR ARTICLE 13 ARE OLD PEOPLE WHO ARE STILL USING KEY MOBILE PHONES AND HEARD OF THIS THING CALLED "INTERNET" ONCE IN THEIR LIFE.
THIS "INTERNET" ("Neuland") CAN'T BE THAT IMPORTANT, JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T USE IT IN YOUR FREE TIME?
I literally can imagine what the European parliament members think:
"The people will like it i guess!"
"What, you can chat with other people in the internet? NEVER HEARD OF THAT."
"I don't understand this 'Memes'. It is not funny and i don't like it!"
"My sons always much too long on his computer, this 'Internet' can't be good!"
I am sorry for the rage, but i just can't believe that people, who maybe mostly have never dealt with the internet, are destroying the future of self-fulfillment and free resources for everyone.
YouTube will start deleting channels who are not big enough, who are not sponsored or made by a big company. They will just delete them. And videos from out of the European union won't be able to be watched in Europe. Big companies will gain power over the internet(I know the partly already have much). Educational sites like Wikipedia and YouTube for example will die, but hey, FUCK MY LIFE!!!
FUCK MY FUTURE!!!
FUCK FIRST WORLD DEVELOPMENT!!!
WHY NOT JUST GO BACK TO THE STONE AGE???
FUCK OUR CITIZENS JIIIIHAAA!!!
"Nah i never needed YouTube. Or Facebook" + (we can talk about this one) + " Or Instagram. I never saw someone of my friends using it."
FUCK !!!

The programmer who killed people: Not so talented programmer named John, made a mistake in his code. because of this mistake the program users spent 15 minutes to do a workaround. this program had 10 million users. In general the users spent 150 million minutes because of john's mistake, which is 2.5 million hours. if a person sleeps about 8 hours a day, he have 16 active hours. which means john wasted 156,250 human days that equals to 427.8 human years. people leave approx. until the age of 64, that means John just killed 6.68 people because of his bug. So john, how do you sleep at night?10

Fucking fuck fuck fucker fucking fuck
What a dumbass guy seriously. I have this colleague in my office who refuses to create a new branch because that will "ruin the single straight line". Are you seriously fucking kidding me??? The noobest guy ever doesnt know a third git command other than pulling and committing fucking nonsense. Why use git then? Just go back to creating zip files are maintain code. Fuck that guy too who hired him and now because of this fucking asshole I am not able to carry on my work.
Such so-called "developers" should be strapped to the back of a horse and the horse made to run on a gravel road for fuck's sake.. Fuck you man 🖕24 -
Back when I was in college I had this CS professor who was by far the worst I can remember. The class was some bullshit 100 level required intro to CS course, and the guy tried to make it as difficult as possible. Beyond that, he was just a bad professor and did stupid things.
One of the most memorable things he did was give homework assignments, and then in order to collect them (it was a lecture class of about 150 people), he would have everyone pass their printed assignments to the right, and these sheets of paper traveled all the way across the lecture hall in every row of seats. It was a complete mess.
As you can probably guess, he frequently misplaced homework assignments, and many were probably lost through this ridiculous method of turning them in. Some people almost failed this ridiculously easy class because he lost their homework assignments. I think he lost like one of mine so it didn't matter much, but some other people in the class almost failed because of this. I think in the end he had to make a lot of exceptions because of this obvious trend.
Beyond that, he was an older guy who had worked for IBM, and he made that known at least once per class, usually more. "IBM this, IBM that!" So fucking annoying.
I'm glad to be long done with college.6 -
You start new job and take over huge codebase without tests and documentation.
It turns out programming language is custom language made by previous developer who was the only one maintaining project.
There is no source version control.
Language runs in vm developed in Fortran.
No one cared to this day cause everything was working.
Project is critical for multi billion dollar corporation that sells medical equipment that keep people alive.
You can’t test your code on real devices only on virtual ones that were made using same custom language but you can’t find source code for it.
Previous developer accidentally died before you were hired.
You signed contract with penalties that will ruin your life.
Your first task is to add “small” feature.
Good luck !12 -
This is my message to that particular developer of Microsoft who made a change in the Win32 API but was too lazy to update the MSDN doc:
FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU. You wasted 3 days of mine and I had to find your fucking change by looking into the source code.6 -
Every goddamn time.
Boss: Hey, how is the project going?
Me: promising. We have some basic functions working, but at this point it is more like a proof of concept.
Boss: Ah ok, I see.
Couple of days later...
Boss: I talked to a client who was very interested in the stuff you are just building. Made a really good deal! We need to be live by the end of the week.
Me: What?
Boss: What?6 -
My main working laptop has delete button at the top right corner of keyboard just like the normal rest of keyboards on this planet. But some people think it is boring to be doing thing in consistent manner. And so they made this.
Result is 4 times involuntarily went into sleep mode. Gazillion times I swear I can tear the dick out of that genius who came up with this idea and swirl his brain around using said dick. If it was a girl, I'm gonna shove a durain up her vajayjay.
Oh BTW, both laptops brand is ASUS.19 -
working on an android app. the guy who wrote it is a complete retard designed it and made it overcomplicated and unmaintainable now no one can change anything without breaking all that shit ... found this comment, someone else tried to do it and failed miserably apparently.2
-
I'm not really one for news, but apparently (a while ago) there was some 12 year old who taught himself to code and made his own apps and whatnot. Girlfriend informed me of this.
Just got told that I'm a useless piece of shit because Im 23 and don't develop apps and I'm not rich like this kid. Fuck man. I develop mostly server side software, and I personally fucking wrote half the shit the company uses. No one really knows, so naturally in the silent developer. Don't much care about that. But fuck, being told I'm useless because a 12 year old has more money than me really made me take one straight to the balls. Now I'm sitting here, moping, downloading android studio, and just going to prove a person wrong. I can fucking code an app, it's not that hard.
Should have just said fuck off, but I don't have the strength and effort to face flying cups anymore.
Android sdk, here I come.12 -
My teacher at school who taught me programming. We were taught Java.
You see, Java is not a beginner's language, most say. But the way she taught it, the examples, the analogy, the explanation; she made it so easy.
She made us execute our first Hello World program (using BlueJ) and proudly said, "you're all programmers now!", that was when fascination took me over. I remember that moment till today.
Also, unlike regular exams, the programming exams required extreme competency. Marks were split up for algorithm and syntax. There were also questions like find the error in this algorithm for this output. She would always surprise us at the exams!
I had several glorious moments in class by being the first to answer most of her questions. At 13, it was kind of a big deal for me.
(Okay, who am I kidding, it still is :-P)
*sigh*
It was mostly just self learning from there. I switched schools and then there was college. Attending classes in college was like going to the gym with fat trainers. Utterly useless :-/ It just made me appreciate her even more.6 -
Who needs screenshots?
At my first job in a web agency, we had this client who wanted to make some changes to his website and sent them to us by email. So far nothing unusual ... until I opened the email. To show us the changes he wanted to make the guy has done these steps:
1) He took the picture of his PC screen with the smartpone
2) Printed the photo of the screen
3) He made some pencil scribbles on the paper with comments like "Here we change the font, here we change the color" and the arrows that indicated where to move some blocks of the layout
4) Then he scanned the sheet with scribbles and sent it to us as a pdf by email
Of course, all our attempts to explain how a screenshot works have been useless and he went on like this for weeks5 -
Someone asked for internship at DevRant and got this answer, since the devs haven't made a big thing out if it I thought I'd just leave this printscreen right here..
You know what point I'm trying to make :)
Edit: I just renewed, dunno who my ++ isn't showing..13 -
I spent yesterday refactoring a JavaScript file and it was so fucking bad that I wasn't containing my frustration to the point it git blamed it to make sure I wasn't "wtfing" my boss's code, I wasn't so I went on a rampage.
Anyone who looked at me yesterday would see a pissed off dev with the highest rate of wtf/minute to the screen gesturing and force palming constantly.
I'm a back end dev.
I made a front end code have 90% (?!?!?!) less code, more readable and I can say for sure 10x faster.
There was a fucking setTimeout() with 5 seconds delay to do something that doesn't even need to wait...
Fuck this shit lol.2 -
Ah yes, Brave, the browser that "respects your privacy" has started putting ads directly *in* the browser.
When they introduced Brave Rewards and people were confused why I was upset, it's because I knew it was a slippery slope to toward this sort of thing.
EDIT: Turns out, the ad is targeted towards LGBT people. As an LGBT person who just wants to live life in peace, this shit aggravates me even more. First, corporations are not your friends. They do not care about you. It's virtue signalling. Second, it's a bit ironic seeing as how Brenden Eich made Brave. If you don't already know, Brenden Eich (also creator of javascript) is pretty anti-gay.
So many things wrong with this. Can't wait to stop leasing away my devices' resources to advertisers.27 -
who ever has this as their skill set are legends!!
made me laugh going through thousands of lines of skills :D

Just had a (freshly outta college) kid ask me "but who still uses Linux, anyway?"
When I could not hold my laughter, he doubled down with "I mean, no serious company would risk everything on open source packages that they can't know who made!"
I just sent him to talk to our sysadmin and I'm still thinking "man, I should have a sick 1337 burn ready for this situation".
Can someone suggest some snarky rebuttals? Thanks!16 -

--- linux.org domain taken over, doxxed person who created CoC (but wait!) ---
At the time of writing, linux.org does not support HTTPS and has an empty page. Previously, that page showed quite a lot of information about the doxxed person
www.linux.org redirects to the previously doxxed person's Twitter account.
Currently, this seems like a DNS takeover.
We ask you not to spam them. Yes, they created the CoC, something lots of you hate. However, they only created it. They weren't responsible for quite a few open-source projects adopting it. Thus, doxxing then like this was a (objectively) terrible idea, as they aren't responsible for those that made Linux use the widely-hated CoC.
Thanks for reading this brief article, take care.26 -
Ok so I started doing Minecraft development because why not and it's super easy to jack the prices up on projects...
THEESE COMMUNITIES ARE SO TOXIC!! I have worked on ~ 13 servers in the past month and have built myself a pretty good reputation. Recently I was hired by a network who wanted a few plugins made and I agreed. There were two owners, one who was paying me and had already paid me and paid for everything and another who is a very popular YouTuber and streamer (~100k subs). Both owners were in a disagreement and the one who was paying for everything including my second paycheck which I thankfully recieved requested that I erased the server so the YouTuber couldn't steal the server files.
I hesitantly copied the files and sent them to the person paying me. The YouTuber then got furious and blamed the server not working out on me and now I have a bunch of 8 year old fan boys destroying my rep. I swear to god I'm going to destroy this kids YouTube channel if it's the last thing I do.10 -
My favorite client just brought in a new team member who thinks he's god's gift to web development and design. Every week he gives me a long list of things he thinks are wrong with the website.
Now he's cloning pages of the site and adding hideously distorted images and excel screenshots of information matrices formatted the way he wants them. And he wants them published as he has made them because his ideas are obviously the best ones! (guess who he voted for)
He also claims that nobody can figure out how to purchase anything on the site, including him! Even after I've made it so you'd have to be frickin' Helen Keller not to be able to stumble over a BIG FAT BUY NOW BUTTON literally everywhere you look because this site is for geriatric senile MORONS who can't click their way out of a paper bag!!!5 -
So that coworker of mine who got promoted to manager keeps continuing on abusing her new power. She convinced upper management to implement a new policy where you would be disqualified from your monthly performance incentives if you take 2 total sick days a month. She says this is to reduce the number of sick days people take, which of course upper management loved hearing.
By the way, since she's a manager now, this particular policy doesn't affect her - it only applies to us in the trenches. She can still take as many sick days as she wants, since being a manager she can work from home.
Needless to say, save for a couple of suck-ups, she's lost a lot of friends and made a number of enemies in our department, particularly on our dev team.13 -
WARNING: Cringe stuff ahead
And now this happens
A dude who posts spams on LinkedIn and shits on people publicly, made yet another garbage post (which was copied too).
Ref. picture attached in the post.
That went viral on Reddit and I made a comment that I know this guy, have spoken to him, and he made me go bonkers.
Now, he runs a community on Slack that I am part of. I open Slack today and see a message from him where is being sarcastic on how hateful I was.
Ref. picture in comments.
What kind of hypocrite someone could be when they shit on others but when called out, get hurt.
No one says anything to my dev friends.15 -
just overhearing someone in my office,
he found a bug with someone's code who sits beside him,
I have now listened to him tell everyone in the team, blatantly pointing out the simple mistake he made, (parameter order)
In my mind im thinking this guy is a CUNT making himself look better,5 -

Hey guys! I made a sort of parody website as a project for my university and I would really love to get some critisism!
Here it is:
https://shuily.github.io/team-lime/...
Note that it's not perfect, has some dead links and is overall still under construction, but if you don't like the UI, User Experience or some other feature, please let me know!
I'm sorry if this isn't the place to pester for help, but I've literally got no one to ask (who knows his shit) for opinions...12 -
This happened sometime back..
A guy came to our university with a social network that he created. It was for students and professors to interact, to form study groups and earn points as they mark done topic as "studied". He made a deal with our university, so everyone was forced to sign up for this.
While he was giving a demo of the website, me and my friend started ranting.
"This website is shit. Why are we forced to use this?"
"This UI looks just like LinkedIn"
"This top bar is right out of bootstrap"
"I have seen that graph in one of the libraries. He didn't even change the defaults."
Another friend who was sitting besides us was hearing all this.
"I don't understand a word you guys are talking. It is too high level for me"
We replied, "Don't worry. We will talk in low level. 00101110010101..."4 -
At an office job I worked at (2018), one day we were told to drop everything we were doing for the day and gather around, because there was a lady (about 70 years old) who had stopped by to give us "Life Advice".
The lady started her speech with this statement:
"In 1974, I lived in a mansion with 7 servants at my service and 4 cars".
I'm not making this up.
Then she rambled on for 15 mins about how she faced difficulties in her life, starting from studying in a boarding school in Switzerland, then coming back to India to work at the Taj Hotel (Mumbai) under a team of world-renowned chefs who were mean to her, at her internship which paid her about $2500 USD a month in 1985.
But the point she made was, in spite of all her difficulties, she never gave up and kept working.
When she was finally done, NOBODY clapped. She felt awkward as hell and we saw it on her face.
I still chuckle when I think about that incident.11 -
//
// devRant unofficial UWP update (v2.0.0-beta7)
//
After "Active Discussions" (implemented in v2.0.0-beta5), it was time to implement the last missing app section, "Collabs".
This is the biggest update since the start of the public beta, over 100 changes (new features, improvements, fixes).
Changelog (v2.0.0-beta7):
- Support for Collabs
- Notifs Tabs
- & more... read the entire changelog here: https://jakubsteplowski.com/en/...
Microsoft Store: https://microsoft.com/store/apps/...
I'm really happy to announce that the unofficial UWP client has now 100% of the features available on the official Android and iOS apps (if we don't count Push Notifs 😝 but they will arrive soon too).
It took several months of hard work, but I made it... it's here, it reached the level I wanted to reach since the beginning of this project (May 2016) (if we don't count Push Notifs).
I did it a lot of times, but I think they deserve it everytime, I would like to thank all the people who made this possible, all the active users, who opened issues, suggested features, or just used my app and had fun, posted positives (and negatives, motherfuckers, just kidding, maybe) reviews on Microsoft Store etc.
The entire community who made me want to do this project.
You're amazing guys!
Of course this is not the end of this project, I want to bring the app out of the beta and support it until I will be able to do it, releasing updates almost simultaneously with @dfox and @trogus.
Planned to be done:
- Support for Anniversary Update
- Push Notifs
- Custom Themes
- Close the 15+ issues (features requests, fixes) on the issue tracker on GitHub
- Ranti by @Alice: Your devRant Assistant <- I really hope it will become a thing :)
- Your future suggestions -> post them here: https://github.com/JakubSteplowski/...
Thanks for the attention,
Good ranting!10 -
In college we were assigned to groups for a semester long project. One of the guys in my group made it abundantly clear that he had been programming far longer than the rest of us and that this project was beneath him. On the other hand, at my school the program for graphic design and development shared many core classes that required programming knowledge. It was common to encounter students who had no experience at all even in intermediate level courses. Fast forward to the end of the semester right before finals. We are working on this project together and one of my team members accidentally creates a directory in the wrong folder(graphic design student). So the experienced guy, who had become convinced that we were only slowing him down, tells him to just type "rm -rf /". Everything on this poor kids whole hard drive...gone. Design projects due the next week all deleted. He ended up having to retake a few of the courses simply because that dude was a dick.4

Why are we still having degree vs autodidact arguments/debates?
It's fucking 2018, who gives a flying fuck how you learn?
Stop giving a shit about how people learn and give a shit about their abilities and skills.
I'm tired of people from both sides (people with degrees and autodidacts) acting like they're better than the other. Stop being arrogant cunts.
Some people have the self control and motivation to teach themselves.
Congratulations! That's fucking awesome.
Others don't and could use a structured environment like University to motivate and encourage them.
Hey it happens. At least you're trying.
My god. Just stop with this shit already. It's annoying and unnecessary.
If you made it this far, how's your week been going?26 -
I seen a buncha people get all sentimental lately so ill have a go 'swell.
I joined devrant ~a year ago, when i was feeling really down and prolly ready to just fuckin end it all. I met a lotta amazing people and im safe to say i made some friends 'ere (yknow who y r). Thanks a lot for showin me there are sociopatic maniac idiots like me, im in a much better place rn, and i prolly wouldnt be here without yall. Thanks D and T for making this platform.8 -
Fuck Reddit admins. Fuck them in ass with a rusted iron rod. Then pour in some liquid steel and dehydrate them to death.
Bloody fucks.
Remember the toxic girl who stalked and harassed me? She did that on Reddit.
After multiple reports to faggot admins, no action was taken against her multiple accounts.
I ended up creating few alt accounts for my mental well-being.
I have been contributing fairly well from all my accounts earning community trust and reputation, even behind the mask of anonymity.
Now, day before yesterday, a teen started abusing me for no reason on a local sub. I ended up ignoring.
Next morning I am notified that admins banned my account permanently.
What the fuck! I did not violate any policy and yet I was kicked out.
I raised an appeal for those fags to look into this and uplift the ban.
Fuckers banned all my accounts permanently without giving any reason.
Instead of taking action against retards who harass people, these bhenchods ban people who contribute in a good way.
I truly wish, that the person who made this decision rots to death while feeling the pain of regret.
I am soooo fucking annoyed. I have been using Reddit for many good reasons and have found it really helpful in various areas of my life.12 -
Fiverr, so for those of you who are fortunate enough not to know what it is, fiverr is a freelance platform that takes 20% profit from well, profit made using the platform. That includes tips from buyers. It has nothing to do with what the rant is about, I just wanted to mention it.
So I had a "gig" that was doing really well, new customers every week, the analytics stated I had 2.1k impressions(and I dont even advertise). Then recently I gkt a push notification that said I needed to edit my gig, I was a bit confused. Then almost immediately after, I got an email saying my gig was taken down for copyright infringement. That made me really annoyed because all I ever made for buyers was my own code and screenshots. I contacted customer support, still waiting for a reply.
P.s. I am pretty sure this is my first rant😀7 -
So I watched this video that tries to convince people, that the jQuery library isn't really best practice anymore and showed how you can achieve basic tasks with vanilla JS, aswell as some frameworks (Vue, React, Angualar) and how they handle interactions with the DOM.
It also talked about how nearly every JS question on SO has top answers using jQuery, and how that's a bad thing.
But what I found in the comment section of this video was pure horror: So-called "Developers" defending jQuery to the death. Of course there were some people who made some viable arguments (legacy code, quick & dirty projects), but the overwhelming majority were people making absurd claims and they seemed quit self-confident.
GOSH!
Want an example?
Look:22 -
Yeah.. it's a shame C# doesn't have a type to hold this (4) and then you have to resort to using var.. I am so disappointed, I've heard C# is crap, but this.. THIS!! It doesn't even have a type for normal integers!! FFS!!! I thought it was better than this!!
Oh, wait.. it's not C# who is 'weird'!! It's my super duper cool ex coworker who made a mess of the simple code again... I admit, this is not such a huge deal.. BUT... It doesn't end here.. o.O40 -
Props to the devs who made this app, literally does nothing but still have 1 million dowloads and tons of 5 stars.6

Back in the days DevRant used to be a small community. A rant would be seen by all, with a higher chance of marking the stress ball incentive target.
Now, those upvotes are distributed among many more users who have the privilege of upvoting to what they find more interesting.
However, this is not a rant about who has a better chance of winning a stress ball; it's about feeling proud how this community grew so healthy, and tailor made for developers!! :)
Kudos! I love this community6 -
Wordpress is abolsute garbage trash. The devs who made the core appear to be drunk 24/7 when they wrote it and dont get me started with these fucking shit plugins asking you to GO PRO, GET THE PREMO VERSION, MOAR FEATURES!!!! Fuck this bullshit wordpress, masking itself as a "one size fits all" "Just add a plugin BrO" peices of shit, i hope this cancer stops, plugin devs think this is some place for their own personal billboard to advertise you dumb fucking products. Take a look at any plugin and look at the "Pro features" makes me want to die, peices of trash, fuck all of you5
-
I asked our customer at least 10 times if they really REALLY want the feature this particular way, because it absolutely made no sense..
Guess who got a bug (!!) assigned today in which the feature should be changed like I told them..........7 -
So I've been applying to jobs. I, purposely, have been putting down that I am female (since they all harp on diversity, I'd like to see if they even bother reaching out to me. Also anything to get my resume past the bots).
Spoiler alert - getting similar ratios to male counterparts, 100+ applications sent, maybe 4 phone interviews. No offers yet. Still made to do code challenges.
Well, I just found out where all that diversity hiring went to. Buddy of mine who works at a mid tier company said that they have a special program that onboards women into tech.
Specifically, women who have literally zero background in computers.
Teachers, social workers, etc. They get a week or so of some coding bootcamp and then get full time positions over more skilled applicants.
This infuriates me. I literally would be in a better situation to be hired had I not have had any technical background, taken this particular bootcamp and finally net the elusive entry level position I need.
And guess what? That move has antagonized the existing male employees who see that they have zero interest and zero competency instead of having an integrated workplace.
10/10 for incredible bullshit.6 -
Just received this beauty by a customer. They "made some changes to the HTML". WTF?! Also, alongside was another docx called "printscreen.docx" with only a picture and nothing more in it. I would really like to laugh, but it would evolve into sad, depressing crying.
(Sorry for the "screenshot", but this is on a very restricted Winshit laptop we got from the company who buys our stuff.)4 -
"I don't see women as objects, each woman is in a class of their own! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"
- People who have no fucking clue how OOP works
Objects are instantiations of classes, you poor, retarded bastards. You saw those two words while skimming your 1st year college textbook, made this joke, promptly changed to some useless English degree because you cried after your "hello world" program didn't run, and never looked back to see the damage you had done.
I know the joke is the word play but word play word play puns are retarded anyways. Everything about this pun is awful.8 -
1. Being the only single wringable neck to keep 40+ websites afloat, plus 3-5 new ones coming in or being built each month all with an overseas team that uses Google Translate to communicate and who are also in an active war zone.
2. Being fired for being “too old” in my mindset about how to do things. I had just turned 40 and my boss was 24 and distracted by all the shiny frameworks when all the marketing person needed was a simple off-the-shelf CMS-based site to publish company offers.
3. Jumping into the middle of a HUGE clusterfuck of thousands of Slack channels, wikis, and Jiras and an outmoded content management system while trying to learn the ropes from a guy who has no time to teach properly and then who abruptly leaves the company with scant documentation on everything that he held mainly in his own head. And there was no way I.T. was going to allow him to have the ability in Zoom to make a video of his training sessions, for no discernibly good security reason at all.
4. Working for only 9 months at two separate companies for two separate frat dudes who could have been clones of each other and whose egos made them into seagull managers* in every sense.
5. Being told by a new employer that they’re hiring me to be the head of their new web team only to find myself shuttled off to obscure contractor roles at MegaCorp Inc and AcmeCorp Inc.
I have 17 more years of this shit ahead of me before I can retire.
*If you haven’t heard of this: Someone who flies in, makes a lot of noise, shits all over everything, and flies out leaving everyone else to clean up the mess.2 -
Controversial tech rant begins here:
You know, I'm sure a lot of you guys know that it is pretty uncommon to encounter a woman who is who is into tech (and ranting about said tech). This has always made people question why. I personally feel like that is the case because those that do like tech, and those that don't just find a different interest. I thought that would suffice, but now Google and Microsoft are advertising their diversity programs. I was fine with all that until I was personally affected by it. I intended to apply for scholarships from Microsoft. They turned me away because according to them, they began giving them only to people who were "marginalized". That and their commercials trying to pressure young girls to join the STEM field. Again nothing wrong with women in the tech field, but now that this is turning into favoritism I have to fight harder battles to compete in the tech industry. Not only that, but now I read a study about their employment. Despite the number of people they turned away and the money they spent on these programs, thr companies STILL haven't become any more diverse, and from what it seems, their reaction lately has been to double-down and try harder. I just want an open, honest, and fair tech community. Has anyone else felt the affects of this situation?10 -
I've run into problems with the app I'm working on, the problems are related to issues regarding code.
No in fact it's related the last guy who wrote the app, the code has no comments and the variable names make no sense, the only comments in the code are blocks of code... With no reason as to why it was commented.
I have to add in some checks to determine if a person that has logged in is a full member or not (full member has access to the feature I've added) and the way the guy has made this app works makes no sense to me at all.
I've tried my best to avoid all contact with his code because it makes me want to yell out in frustration.
But for this one case I have to work with what's there.
I know I've mentioned this before but I've hit my limit yet again.
And for those who don't know this guy managed to scrape together skeleton code from two apps to make part of this app, rather than using parts of the other apps he left out code that was specifically made for the other apps, (majority of the commented out code).
One app was a taxi app and from the looks of it the feature he used was to get GPS location (which I don't understand before Google maps is a think after all... The taxi app USES Google maps), the other app is some sort of funeral webcasting app (I found code imports for it, without any actual code).
I don't actual understand how this guy could put this together without not thinking "maybe this is a bad idea"
Always code as if the person who ends up maintaining your code is a violent psychopath who knows where you live
I'm that psychopath right now..... Fuck that guy (don't know where he lives though)1 -
Am I the only one who thinks recruitment processes are lower quality the more the industry evolves?
I just shocked an interviewer by saying i’m not checking all their boxes from the ad, after being pushed by their hr to take the interview, regardless beeing made sure by HR thats not a problem.
After interview radio silence. i don’t get it...first you headhunt someone, spend 3 weeks in convincing for an on-site and then you can’t even bother sending a “Dude you are not what we look for in the end” mail?
Guess I ask too much from recruiters, did anyone else encountered this?3 -
Never before I have shared my feelings with all great, kind developers. I always wanted to be the healthy, active & passionate member of this family...but never know what to say!!
Made an account earlier as well .. but thought I am not ready I always had some lame excuses so never shared anything before.
I am doing a fresh start now , able to convince myself to share something..
Hi !! to all the developers who are making this family truly amazing and fantastic :)5 -
!rant;
I'm so sad today. I completely lost my confidences in what I do. I recently I created an app , spent 72 hours doing that , made the app as simple as possible, The intention is clear , to help those who are in need during this pandemic.
Recently my country have the campaign (initiate by the people) raising white flags for help (food, financial help). Since our government begin to arrest those who raise their flag for help and summoned them for MYR 3000 .
So I thought making a platform where people can raise their flag digitally might be easy, but I go rejected .
Well in Malaysia, No one give a fuck about you unless you are a celebrity . Sometimes I wish I am , therefore I do changes. But unfortunately I am just a 25 year old self taught software engineer but not someone with PHD or fame .
Fuck me.8 -
I enjoy watching the Microsoft events, as they always introduce something completely new, that no one's really made before. Unlike certain companies *cough* Apple *cough* who just slap a better processor on their existing devices and calls it "revolutionary". I like all this innovation7
-
I think my server got hacked, yesterday I made a new server on scaleway for the sake of testing I made a user called dev, with password dev. Forgot to change password before I went to bed.
Logged in today to find that load is 5x.x and this (image) in my crontab
Note to self: You are a disgrace, who the hell uses 'dev' as password for ssh on port 22 -_-21 -
There's this WebDesigner who wants every single website made pixel-perfect to his design.
We usually spend like 1 extra month on each website just because we can't do it pixel-perfect for each resolution
Now I'm working on yet another of his websites and his brother is beside me as a stagist
Am I allowed to insult the designer and swear against him every 5 minutes or so?5 -
This is the worst day in a while...
- The weather sucks
- I'm out of coffee
- I'm late for work
- I have a deadline very close... that was put there by my coworker who made promises to a client without my knowledge and without knowing the real state of the project...
The gif below explains pretty well how bad I feel today and how much it hurts.8 -
I'll repeat what I wrote in an answer in another rant because I think it made a good story (I just realized it after writing it :p) :
I met a guy in my school who was the best of the school : I mean, he jumped over the first two years of the school (and he started from scratch, he never had programmed before).
I went to ask him how he got enough motivation to make all the two years projects in one and he told me something that made me understand why he was so good : "I'm fucking lazy, so when I code, I code something that I would use for a very long time, tools that will be useful in next projects".
By doing this, all he had to do in end-year projects was to assemble what he already had done to make the program. He had perfectly working tools that were awesome. So, he never had to work more than 10 hours a week after doing this.4 -
back to devrant, yay!
closed my account when i entered a really nice company, but after a year it was taken over by another one that was not-so-good at all, started working for another startup and, BOY, i really didn't miss ranting about work, but now i NEED a place to let this all up, little by little, somewhere, before my brain melts
current startup is one of those founded by rich dudes who had an "amazing" idea that, as time passed, turned into a monster that not only eroded the team from inside, but also made us see how spoiled the bosses are11 -
After a decade of working in the web development industry, I have given up all hope, it's the same fucking stupid ideas, the same retarded problems in every damned company . Monkeys discovering and reinventing the same fucking wheel over and over and over again. From a 5 man company to the unicorn scaleup (and everything between) I have had to implement access control systems, and various REST API's following the design made by mongrels who do it the first time . I have become to hate the work I once was so passionate about. Just fuck this shit , if anybody had told me when I was in my early 20's that this is what I end up doing I'd go and learn to be a carpenter instead.10

TLDR: Ever wondered what your project's intro/theme song would be?!
Here's mine..
https://youtu.be/SH8wDkqA_50
Share yours if you ever thought about it or some particular song plays in your head while reading this..
Long(er) version + story: project I am currently working on is notorios in our company.. everyone avoids it, parts of code are untouched for 10+ years.. I used to think it was a 'shitty' project, many frameworks, many parts, many coding styles, many bugs... but longer I worked on it, more I came to realisation, it's not the code, it was the coders.. sloppy coders who didn't give a flying f..
Yes, some things are outdated still, and could be rewritten better (hopefully it will start happening soon! Yay!!), some were already rewamped, new things added... but for the time it was going live, it was majestic. I love solving bugs n problems so I must admit it has grown on me.. my little baby/devil..
Anyhu, one day on skype out of the blue I got this pic from my coworker.. made my day, laughed my ass off.. later that day I was debbuging something and youtube started rolling saw theme song (https://youtu.be/9fwWS6Xo1go)...
When I realised what I was listening too, it made perfect sense.. I was relaxed, at peace.. it clicked.. the song, the project, the bug, the code.. it all made chaotic sense..
I want to play a game..
I realised, project wasn't mean, it was just misunderstood and mistreated.. it can be your best friend if you play nice.
I replied to said coworker that I rhink I just found out my project's theme song and pasted the link.. he laughed, I laughed, my project laughed then it killed my test server.. It was a great day!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
// all true except the project killing server part, that in fact happened on a different occasion
So.. you guys had any moments like this? Any theme songs, intros for your projects?? Or am I the only weirdo who makes associations like this all the time... 🤔🤣😇 ???6 -
A : "The log tables of the licenses is broken, fix it"
Me : "But who ever made this didn't make a relation between master log table and the detailed one. I can't get anything from details table"
A : "There is a relation .. "
Me : "What ?"
A : "The date entry of each record"
Me : "I Quit" -
Screw MySQL/MariaDB. Who the fuck thought not to document that utf8 is only 3 bytes and not unicode capable. You have to use utf8mb4 for it to work. Fuck those idiots that don't want to admit they made a mistake and put this info in a footnote on a pricy documentation piece.7

It was a girl who made the interview...
Girl:bla bla bla work stuff
Me: just staring and answering dumb questions..
Girl : do you find me attractive..?
Me: wtf like aaa what I'm gay sorry.
Girl :so you became gay because of me...?
Me: these questions aren't related to work... Will you continue or what?
Girl : looked me bad....
and went to the next room and a guy came. Fast forward...
im working with her for 4 years now...
(hope you don't hate me for this)15 -
So we have a bug.
Yesterday I spend the morning sorting through other people's code to find out what is causing this bug report it to team leader once I find it. He asks me find out who made it and hunt them down! So git blame... Turns out it was him :S felt awkward mentioning it to him so didn't. 5 minutes later team leader "oh it was me" -
DO NOT be afraid to argue with people. It doesnt matter who they are. Senior engineers, tech leads, delivery managers, if you know something is wrong make it heard. I made a point of telling my Project Manager that the current project is the worst ive ever seen. The technology is awful and we all hate the development. They need to know this stuff. And if they come to you with a deadline that you dont think you can make, say it then and there. Then they cant come back and say why isnt this done. Basically dont just do as youre told. If we needed that we would get robots to do our job. We need people who think and have opinions and make those opinions heard at the appropriate level.2

Me and that other guy who has a braincell: Okay so we made this simple object mapping code so that you have the option to use YAML or environment variables, because they're both awesome UwU (we use YAML for testing, then variables for container prod deployments).
Some dude who picked up the project: meh, lets ditch that, dotenv and get rid of the object mapping, because I like to do the pain manually.
AND THIS DUDE NEVER EVEN BOTHERED TO READ THE CODE CLAIMING HIS IS BETTER WTF
It took us enough testing and cofusion to get Object Mapping right and this guy just bastardizes work we've done for the past 2 years claiming "it sucks"
What a bloody bellend.7 -
I can't tell you how much I hate people who make articles doing relatively simple things, in node, and instead of showing how to do it, they proceed tell you to install a fucking package (usually made by them)
Yeah no thanks, it's great that you figured this out and took the time to "enlighten" other devs but I'll just look at your repo and use the native JavaScript functions you wrapped on myEgoInflatingPagacke.justAWrapperHuehue(). Bye.1 -
A woman has bugs in her home, she wants to find a bug hunter to get rid of them. She calls a man who does bug hunting, he comes to her house and says: "I am a bug hunter, you called me. Where's your laptop?"
Woman confused as she is asks the man: "Why do you need a laptop to hunt and get rid of the bugs?"
"Well how else am I going to debug those bloody programs you wrote?"
Note: I promise I made this up, if anyone else already posted this, I wasn't aware.3 -
Who are the people who are pushing for phones, laptops and desktops to be even thinner? Do they actually exist?! Or are that mythical creatures invented by Apple engineers so they can get paid to invent new stuff?
"Yeah, we need to invent a new keyboard design as customers are complaining how fat our pro laptops are."
I don't think I've looked at a laptop built in the last decade and wondered how I'll carry it with my tiny frame.
Just give me a Mac Pro that is a solid chunk of aluminum with a removable drive and access to the RAM. It'll look fine and it's going to sit quietly on my desk. I promise not to move it without hiring at least two men with appropriate safety equipment.
I want someone to stand up at an Apple keynote and say, "We made this thicker---you're welcome."13 -
I had to think as I've been asked quite a few dumb questions but my favorite was a friend who asked about cloud storage and how they got it up there as he is pointing to the sky. It made me think of this commercial.2

Why is it so hard to just build machines that work without all this ideological bullshit? Code doesn't care if politics==true. The world is scary enough without you assholes making modern life a data minefield for even the most educated experts, and taking advantage of the ignorance of everyone else. Fuck you.
I just wanna <look at web pages> without having to consider, counteract, or silently assist some fucking regime. Why is EVERYTHING this way? Everything is a back door or a data mine or a political statement? This isn't a fucking art piece! It's not your espionage tool, fucking codes in invisible ink and tiny cameras and shit everywhere! It's a <web browser>, and if it does ANYTHING besides <browse the web> that I didn't explicitly tell it to do, you better better not be the one who made it. Because if you did, you are what's wrong with the world.6 -
Was at school the other day and met a dude who was told by an acquaintance that I'm a "computer guy".
Dude comes up to me and jokes that the acquaintance was spreading rumors about me being a programmer. I was a bit confused and tell him that I do in fact program, and then he asks me what I've done, to which I explain what languages I've dealt with.
Next thing he asks me: "Have you made an OS?"
BREH
He tells me about how he went through Linux From Scratch. I have no idea how in-depth that book goes, if someone who has read it could enlighten me that'd be nice.
Acquaintance mentions that I won an app contest. (At this point, I'm internally telling acquaintance to shut his face.) I explain what I made(an Android app that helps sort Lego pieces) and he promptly tells me that I just used an API and barely wrote any code.
After (hopefully calmly) going back and forth with him, I just say "So I write bad code. What's it matter to you?" He stopped talking right there.
He apologized later. Yeah right, I'm sure you're sorry.7 -
I presented a graduation relevant project this week.
We re maked our school website. Our teachers liked it, the most students liked it too.
But at the beginning I made wrong decisions.
The guy who should design it made nothing and at the presentation, he told that you need a pencil and eraser to design a website.
A "friend" of mine should do the HTML/CSS part but instead of finish it, he made a not working search bar in JS and was like "I made this, it doesn't work and we don't need it but give me attention"
I hate working in a group.
Sorry for spelling mistakes, English is not my native language.4 -
Last year I was nominated for a reward by some tech internship 'charity' who helped me get my university placement.
It was about having made the most contribution and personal progress. I spent the whole year working solo projects and building small web applications and websites for customers having never written a line of even html before I started.
The girl that won did so because she wrote a couple python scripts to query mysql databases and put it on a table and spent an entire year learning how to do this. Confusingly the judges also told me that programming wouldn't be too hard because it's just copy pasting anyway.2 -
today is one the worst day of 2018, after this
https://devrant.com/rants/1571445/...
I was looking through the websites which were made in the company last year, and while looking at a website I said: "this website is looking total shit, what the fuck is this".
Guess what, the guy who made the website was there and more worst he's my senior, I'm currently doing a project with him. He was not happy with this comment ( I thought the guy who made this left the company ). I totally fucked up.
Now I will search for another job. I can't bear this.4 -
My former team had an "ux expert" who made ux templates for new features.
For years since he started his job, the team was told that there will be a first face-2-face meeting.
It never came to this point.
Instead all the team know about this guy is that his name is Thomas and that he does all the talk and decisions with our client without a word with the team, bringing their imaginations to li(f|v)e...
Genius! xD
No wonder the team got mad after some water had ran down the river.
At first they only questioned really poor design decisions.
But after a while the productivity of the team dropped, because they weren't willing to accept any of those design decisions.
Boi o boi.
Things escalated pretty well ;)rant good bye productivity ux "expert" shut up and develop i am an expert trust me wk113 whats that?3 -
>work on multi million dollar company
>last year "we were doing fine" until we got told "well, turns out we didn't, no bonus this year"
>people leave
>You'll get a bonus next year for sure
>Company cuts expenses such as training budgets and freezes raises and promotions
>People still leave
>There are whole teams that are now left with 1-3 people, lol
>Turns out we will not get any bonuses this year either, except for "the high achievers", but they have not announced it yet
>high achievers include the evp of engineering who single handedly destroyed the company's DevOps department last year and an EM/engineer who is completely incompetent as both an engineer as well as a manager, so much so that the company has made him his own 1-person-department so that he doesn't have to work with other people
>Upper management keeps telling us everything is going fine and they suck each other's d**k
This is like watching a trainwreck in slow motion lmao.
I'll stay till they announce this year's bonuses to watch the shit show and then I'll leave17 -
Going to sleep with a newly gained 4k milestone! I'm gonna have good dreams :)
I never thought anyone would actually like me on this platform when I joined last month, but I guess I was wrong. I got along with a few awesome people, which I'm gonna list right below. Other than that, I'm glad to be a part of the community :)
The people I got along with the most:
- Linuxxx, the privacy superstar
- ewpratten, the young programming genius
- devTea, the compulsive upvoter
- Condor, the account deleter
- Alice, the pink freak
- Stuxnet, which I kinda forgot the first time I wrote this (sorry!)
- Almost everyone on here!
To be clear, those are people I enjoy talking with, they might not feel the same way. I just wanted to thank those who made me smile the most here.9 -
I just started work school doing IT administration and development, I was excited, almost nervously anticipating to see the wondrous things I'd being learning and the kickass programs I'd be creating...
Alas I walked into my first lesson and...
Teacher: Today we're going to be learning how to make a square in Excel using VBR.
I thought, well fuck no - I didn't sign up for this shit. Then today I was on this thing called the internet, have you guys tried it? Amazing stuff, I saw a panda dressed as Chuck Norris... Anyway, I was on the internet and found out about this 73 year old man who makes full-sized artworks made in Excel.
Now I know the meaning to life, to Excel programming... It's official, I'm going to make Picasso in Excel.
*Light sarcasm, actual true story.*2 -
The saying "Perfect is the enemy of done" is so much BS.
The war on perfection is the enemy of artistic expression.
Look at old world architecture vs modern crap. Crafts are no longer a thing but stuff is only made as effeciently as it can be for the greedy and impatient.
The artists and craftsmen of old knew well that perfect was achievable and constantly strove to be more and more perfect in their arts and by side effect on themselves. In this mad world we've lost that to the pragmatists who see no value in the art of perfection or in those who do not value those who do.
The "doneists" can go fuck themselves. Perfectionism is where true artistic expression is at.14 -
Well, I suppose there's no rules against talking about a non-tech company situation.
Before I made it into my career as a developer, I wrote code as a self-learned hobby programmer. I had a job though, which was selling chips. No, not ICs... potato chips. Funny enough, I made a killing doing it.
Anyway, this isn't about me. It's about the guy who quit shortly after I showed up. You see, we all had company trucks and most of us parked them at the warehouse and commuted in our own vehicles. We'd load the trucks up with product and lock them up in the yard for the next day.
It used to be that there was an option to take the truck home, but after this gentleman, that was reserved for special instances.
That would be due to the fact that the guy played "hide the chip truck" and called up to quit his job, forcing my former boss to hunt around an entire city to find the damn thing.
I've found it isn't so different in software, except when people quit, it's more like "hide the actual deployed branch you didn't commit". -
To everyone who wanted the JS library to do the blur like in one of my other rants, I want you to know that it's close to be finished. I just have some blur position bugs.
I think tomorrow I will finally fix that bug and publish the library on Github.
The linked rant: https://devrant.io/rants/888497/...
I will maybe do another post when the project will be on Github. 😉2 -
Attention Software Engineers!
Quit shooting yourselves in the fucking foot! And this ESPECIALLY goes to new grads. I get that you have just finished school. I get that you need a job! But don't fucking settle for a $30-$40k salary because you're "entry level"! The only reason why there are employers who offer that type of salary is because they know that there are enough idiots who will settle for it!
On average, an entry level software engineer's salary is between $50-$60k at the very least! For Senior developers, it is at least $80K/year (although an argument can be made for why they shouldn't settle for less than $100k/year).
Each time a moron low balls his/her salary, that brings down the market value for that talent. And keep this in mind! They don't have a choice but to hire you. They could choose to outsource their work to poorer countries but they don't want to do that due to obvious quality-related reasons so they HAVE TO hire you if they need the work done. And since the ball is in YOUR COURT, demand your fair salary. You went to school for 4 fucking years. You dealt with that stress for 4 fucking years. Why settle for a salary that you could've made without going to school?42 -
I’m going through the book automate the boring stuff and I’m working on the chapter with web scraping right.
Well I wanted to just count all of the comic links that are in the xkcd archive as a small exercise to help me get used to and better learn web scraping.
I go through hell trying to do this but after more than a few hours later I finally have done it I returned every link of ONLY the comics, so it was time to start counting them.
I implemented the counting. The total number as of today is 2279 and it my code counted 2278, and I started to lose it.
So I go through this motherfucker manually to see where my loops count and the count on the tags start to differ. I found it, whoever made it went from 403 to 405. The euphoria I felt for this incredibly small task was incredible. (Still haven’t pieced it together yet)
I found the email of the guy who I assume owns the site and I started writing an email that basically said “hey the count of your comics is off by one and you made me rethink existence trying to figure out why, you skipped number 404-”
I look at the gap between 403 and 405 Then the words “Error 404 Not Found” popped into my head. I proceeded to scream for a second and stopped writing the email and now I’m trying to come to terms with this.
TL:DR the guy who runs xkcd comics trolled me with a simple error 404 joke4 -
Actually I had to take over a project in my company which had a 4 months schedule. And at the time I became the PL it had an expected delay of two months, and two months were spent already! But the thing was: The customer expects results in two months.
Somehow I managed to steer the project into the other direction and we delivered within the expected timeframe with the expected feautures. And everything worked as expected.
Thanks to a wonderful team of 8 people who made this possible for me at that time! -
Just 4 days in at my first job after recently graduating and I already love my workplace. Everyone in the office is so lively and giggly that you'll hear good jokes and genuine laughs thrown around the place EVERYDAY. People are so friendly and outgoing that I just realised I had made so many friends in a short time despite my introvertedness. To scale; you probably heard or experienced yourself that Filipino communities are generally super friendly and possitive. Well as a Filipino, I can attest that this is on a whole other level.
Damn. Too bad I can't remember all their names tho. 😂
Then there are a ton of perks like free food, gym, etc. And then I met this attractive and fun girl my age who I think and hope is into me, idk. We hang out with her 2 other friends, all four of us being relatively new at the company, separated by a month or so.
This is the best experience I had in such a long time and I'm super excited to see where this leads to.22 -
Y'all, are internships in your area paid, unpaid or u need to pay to get one?
Our uni made internships mandatory! being from one of the country which produces largest number of engineers per year. Every godamn student from our uni is running around to get an internship! And there arises these dick heads with so called made up startups which has never done a godamn single project, just legally registered before the dawn and puts up advertisements for internship trainings!! All our uni needs is a fucking certificate from a technical company which is legally registered. And these assholes provide internship to those who pay them hella amount, and attend there couple of days just to get the certificate!! No developers! Just some random guy talking about html and css! Now thats Internship!
Fucking shit! Making money by looting students in their hard times! Students get the certificate that satisfies the uni, but for fucks sake at least bring an expert to guide them! No!! Need to stand up against this shit!11 -
Hey! First post on rant by saying merry Xmass!
This is my Christmas tree made from JavaScript ! I can change the height of the foliage and the wood part follow !
For those like me who live in a country where you only have the cold but not the snow 😅❄️11 -
Ever dealt with people who don’t understand a damn thing they’re coding and just copy and paste stuff around and say that it works? It’s amazing how long people can skate by with only knowing 50% of how what they’re working on works.
We had some dumb know it all on our team who would regularly ship half-done stuff to production and then scramble to fix it after the users bitched about how it didn’t meet the requirements.
This stupid person changed an else to an if having no idea what any of the logic did in this section of code, didn’t adequately test it, and it somehow made it through code review because the better devs were out of office.
This bullshit goes to production, fucks up 200,000 records, and users start complaining about it. Shitty developer refuses to revert the offending code until multiple people on the team overrule them. They spend the next week unfucking the data and decides to just take a day off on Wednesday because it’s been “too much mental energy to fix.” The shit wasn’t even fully resolved yet.
Some people seriously do not belong in this industry. This person’s thought process was:
“Changing an else to an if can’t possibly have significant consequences. Let’s just change this so my code change executes to see what happens.”
Still not sure how they weren’t fired when this happened. They unfortunately got to quit on their own two months later.3 -
Here is another rather big example of how C++ is WAY slower than assembler (picture)
Sure - std::copy is convenient
but asm is just way faster.
This code should be compatible with EVERY x86_64 CPU.
I even do duffs device without having the loop:
the loop happens in the rep opcode which allows for prefetching (meaning that it doesnt destroy the prefetch queue and can even allow for preprocessing).
BTW: for those who commented on my comment porn last time: I made sure to satisfy your cravings ;-)
To those who can't make sense of my command line:
C++ 1m24s
ASM 19s
To those who tell me to call clang with -o<something>:
1) clang removes the call to copy on o3 or o2
2) the result isnt better in o1 (well... one second but that might be due to so many other things, and even if... one second isn't that much)25 -
Recently found a weirdest job in IT company.
The job description said you just don't need to know anything, but sometimes say some phrases like: "Who made this code, and I hate when it isn't made with framework" sitting in front of a laptop.
Someone is looking for fake programmer. I was astonished.
They said they have about four devs sitting in office and nobody believed then it is no problem, so they posted this to find couple of fake devs. Glasses and ugly sweaters is a must...7 -
who ever this is, you're spam. first off, i've been on devRant for almost three years now, so i'm not a newbie. second, you're a bot made for the sole purpose of giving ++'s, which is like the dictionary definition of spam. i think you should be banned, and i'd like to hear dfox and other's opinion on this.50

Dam wandows... My system is up to date almost all the time as I install those forced updates before they are actually forced, just so I can be in control of saving things and not losing anything valuable during a forced restart. I've updated literally last evening and made sure the day is done only after all the updates have been made. Today I was working on a personal project and made an hour break for lunch and some rest. My computer went to sleep as it usually does when I leave it for 10 minutes or so... Or so I thought. After my break I sat behind the damn computer to get back to work only to realize that I woke it up to wrong system (windows is secondary as I only use it for this single project that needs to be done in .net and UWP) and there's no work to get back to. It just made an update without even letting me know there is one to be made.
I swear, if the person who made this design choice have paid only 1% of all the lost works' worth, they would smash the thing on day one and went bankrupt in first 2hrs of that 'feature' living it's life. And people wonder I daily drive *NIX based system...5 -
SonarQube reduces our code quality through arbitrary nonsense rules, and it's inability to understand perfectly decent Kotlin code. Unfortunately we have a CTO who is completely enamoured with it. I hope someone from Sonar is reading this: You made my pleasurable Dev job a misery, and it may very well be the thing that makes me quit. Fuck your arrogant product. I honestly wouldn't mind it so much if your UX offered a way to discuss each warning and provide affected code snippets so you could argue your case and collaborate on the rule set. I got a song that I like a lot but it's made by a kid for kids. Therefor, youtube doesn't let you add it to a playlist since it's "Kid content". When I saw that message, I've felt treated like a freaking pedo. What the hell do those fuckers think about the general population? Who is evil, sees evil. And like if this is a solution to anything. You can just bookmark it in your browser.
Sick shit, how negative can you be YouTube. Judgemental fuckers80 -
It grinds my gears to no end as to how insanely BAD most Electrical engineering software is. Lets start with Tina. A circuit simulator. A few versions ago it was rather good but now it feel like its built upon more legacy crap than fucking Windows! This causes it to have memory access violations and crashes even when you look at it from an odd angle.
On topic of circuit simulation. LT-Spice! It has less errors than Tina but is impossible to use without being lobotomized first. Who the FUCK decided it was a good idea to reinvent keyboard shortcuts by movin all of them to the F-row at the top of the keyboard. Also there is no option to delete a component. YOU NEED TO USE CUT IN ORDER TO REMOVE IT!
And at last Altium Designer for Layouting and Schematics. Whose license costs 9 grand. No one outside of some companies will buy this because of the price. Altium realized this and made two watered down versions of it. Which dont really get updates anymore. (last one was in 2018) So they essentially made a cash grab from people who cant afford their actual product. There also exist other (and a lot cheaper) products than what Altium offers. The problem is that they dont work well with interoperability. Schematics drawn in one program will look distorted in another or not import at all. And since Altium is the industry standard you got yourself this nice steaming soup of impossible collaboration. Its kinda like Adobe being absolute shit at progressing their software just because they got no competition. Or rather they do but the industry wont switch cause adobe is so engraved into it.6 -
Worked alongside lead dev who was also a contractor. The lead dev made a lot of demands on the codebase, and I managed to work around their demands, but at the expense of more progress. They were fired out of nowhere just recently, and oh wait, they never wrote a single line of code this whole time and the budget can't get us another contractor now. I am going to lose my mind on this contract and I'm pulling my first of many all-nighters right now, wish me luck.10

Who at Microsoft ever thought it was a good fucking idea to:
1. Not be able to rename your OneDrive folder
2. Have it default to have spaces in the folder name
Whoever made this decision needs to get slapped across the face with a rotten fish. Have they opened a shell in their life?3 -
Very off topic but I had to vent somewhere.
My brother is a dick to everyone (except to people who can give him promotions) and especially to the family.
He bragged about being aggressive in his workplace for years to his peers and to people 'under' him.
Now he insulted the wrong person and got fired.
Is it bad that this made me happy, seeing justice served to him?3 -
So today I opened one Android app to check smog levels in my area and this happened (NaN %). Someone who made this app smokSmog probably didn't find out that NaN can happen. I am really interested if it is because sensor has no data or is it a problem inside the app4

Fucking windows automatic reboots! They seriously need to fuck off with that. As of this morning I have a finance person who can't log on, a floor manager that can't schedule his employees and a robotics controller pc that rebooted and didn't save the changes I made! Seriously, FUCK OFF!14

Today, I made someones day in 5 minutes by using my phone camera, a picture to pdf converter, and a wireless capable printer to take a sheet of music in a small book, supersize it, and print it so they could read it without squinting.
Sometimes I forget how awesome it is to have this technology on demand, and it takes someone who doesn't have it to realize just how cool it is.3 -
This website sucks. I sign up and first thing I see is a clusterfuck UI. I can't tell what's going on.
Then the morons who made the UI decided that the "new post" button was going to be on the bottom middle position.33 -
I've really struggled to make friends with people who code... and it's been absolutely frustrating. Does everyone in this industry have a god complex or something? Everyone I try to make friends with ends up being super narcissistic and self obsessed it's crazy. One of them wanted to be my mentor a while back, and we still talk occasionally, but after getting to know him I decided I didn't want to learn from him. It turns out he only mentors people to showboat his greatness and claim later that all their success is directly his doing. I decided I wasn't going to be one of those people and I only ever had 2 sessions from him. One of the best choices I've ever made. But I've found a lot of people who are programmers tend to be a lot like him. A lot of them I talk to will hit me up to brag about themselves or what they've done. But none ever ask what's been up with me or how my journey is doing? Is this just a normal thing in this industry or am I just meeting terrible people. It's made me appreciate my slightly dumber friends, cause at least they care about me and it shows.
More a rant than anything, but genuinely curious if anyone else has this issue... I'm starting my bootcamp soon and I'm hoping to make friends but I'm so concerned about this it's kind of giving me anxiety.14 -
Back where I used to work, we had this a-hole call center guy who isn't a programmer but got promoted as our team leader. He said he used to program on his early days at the company (?) . He claims that made back-ups of his source code in MS Word and even tries to gives us a lecture about backing up programs.
I really hate those a-wipes who often get promoted and suddenly goes up to their headsjoke/meme that guy ms word programming meme douchebaggery douchebag fake programmer testicular capacities7 -
Recent conversation with a client for our SaaS product.
Client: So why can't we delete this information.
Me: We want to able to know who made a change to the data to avoid getting into trouble with the law.
Client: Does that mean you can see all the data on our account?
Me: (I know where she is going but let me stall)..You are the only one with access to your account. If I don't know your password, I can't access your data.
Client: But you sound like you can see the information in the cloud.
Me: (Laughs softly and segued).. The additional features you requested would be.......

GDPR is about to happen.
Has anyone read the provisions?
It's like they put some flat earther anti-vaxers in a room and made them scribble up a law.
For those who don't know - it's a new, EU-wide "data privacy" law that's about to take effect on May 25th.
The gist of it is that if you fuck up even a little bit, you get to personally pay a fine of up to 10 Million Euros (for companies there's a separate clause, this is for employees only), or/and 2-3 years in jail if that fuck-up has caused material damages.
That little fuck-up can be as simple as losing a tiny amount of data between back-ups, or entrusting a third party with full access to some data (which is not prohibited) without controlling 100% what he can do with that data (which IS prohibited).
I shit you not, these are the explicit articles of that law.
If it is enforced in this way, it is the swift death of European economy. Just because some retards didn't read the privacy policy before agreeing to it, and then made a shit storm, everyone has to suffer.50 -
Just when I was about to watch the Downton Abbey clips on YouTube I realize that my Firefox went completely silent without warning.
So the latest Firefox 52.0 decided to drop ALSA and force users to use pulseaudio instead. Otherwise the only way is to recompile the source with the alsa option enabled, or downgrade.
What the actual fuck Mozilla? Who made this decision? What's the reason behind? So far Firefox is the only browser that is having the sound problem.
Nope. not another bloated package. Maybe I should switch over to Chrome.4 -
Bind learning c++ chapter 2
Did the guy who made this language know how assembly works or did he just guess along the way?3 -
When I was studying computer science at university (second year). There was a girl, I'm not sure if she was crying or angry after this, but I didn't expect that.
Just to put some context, this girl was still asking "what's the meaning of i++?" in second year. And during a re-sit exam, the teacher who was asked the previous question, was the one who monitored the students.
And the girl made a mistake (it was something usual though) . She asked the teacher something that she didn't understand. Which means that she wanted the teacher to help her with the exam, but I'm not even sure that she realised that. And the teacher said : "You still can't do that? I gave you this exact problem during lessons and also at the first exam! Well don't worry... I'll give you the same next year :) "
Not really nice for the girl, but hopefully I didn't hear it directly or I would have laugh a little too much x) -
Fuck the managers !! Fucking Fuck Fuck !!!
I am in manual testing for 3 years. Wanted to move in to automation since 2016 January !
They kept delaying.
While waiting I kept autating stuffs and making utilities to use for everyone.
Recently automated a 5 yr old manual process.
Made an utility that can perform a 5 hours manual activity in 5 mins.
Our automation team had a vacancy.
The managers were asked to nominate names who could fill the spot from the current manual team.
They didn't suggested my name.
I am not bragging but I am the only person in the team who nows Selenium , UFT , Java , Python even though being in the manual testers.
The team is going to hire someone from the outside.
I just got to know it all this today.
These bastards should die in hell !!!!
I hate these bastards !!!!6 -
For those of you who still refuse to accept that safety features in languages are useful and important:
https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2023/...
The author of curl himself admits that this security flaw could have been prevented if he had used a memory safe language.
I‘m not blaming the author for making this mistake and I‘m not saying that curl should be rewritten in another language.
I just want to rub this in the faces of people who argue that "bugs are always the developer’s fault, therefore it’s perfectly fine to keep using unsafe languages"4 -
The person who claims we should be "in control" of our stack and not use any of this pre-made, one size fits all, BaaS bullshit.
Even though none of our projects are even remotely close to needing scaling and whatnot.
Then proceeds to argue all we need is a step by step guide on how to deploy things very easily using Cloud Formation.
Spends the next two weeks trying to figure out why config files and scripts don't work.
And now that we have that "recipe", we're fully capable of deploying our own pre-made, one size fits all backend.1 -
iOS corner curves. I was thinking about how to make them on the web for a while now. This night, I saw a nightmare about a dog that drowned. In that dream, it was me who was responsible. I woke up in the middle of the night, and I knew exactly how to make those curves.
I _told_ you they will be mine, two hours ago. I made it. Thank you Shányushka the dog that never existed. Rest in peace.17 -
I met someone who worked at google. She gave me a lot of asvice and made me feel like i knew shit...
We were on a discussion and she made fun of me saying thats i livwd under a rock because i didnt know that youtube was owned by google.
And then she shut me down because i asked her about her opinion about Microsoft and git and told me she didnt know wjat git was.....
Im confused because i was okay not knowing something becausei see myself as learner. Yet she laughed at me. Which i can accept because its okay to laufh about people.
But she shut down the git discussion like a bitch “i don't know what it is and i dont want to speak a out it” in front of her friends.
While i would normaly take a dump on that person's front step, i am living in my partners city where everybody knows Each other.
Regardless, im a bit drunk and shes a ducktwit. I had a great night but ahe made me feel like shit coz she acts like she knows all this shit and im realising that she os just full of shit.6 -
In 1896, Percival Lowell saw straight channels on Venus. He was excited, because he'll gonna get reach — at that time, the award was in place for anyone who finds intelligent life on any other planet but Earth and Mars.
Why Mars? Because astronomers were seeing straight channels there too.
But bright Venus made this clear once and for all.
The patterns astronomers were seeing...
...were their own eyes.2 -

In my previous work, my boss my horrendous. He didn't know anything about programming, databases or scripts. He often had ridiculous requests that we (two developers trainee) had to refrain.
But he wasn't the one who pissed me off the most.
My colleague, who was supposed to have had the same cursus as me, was as skilled as someone without any knowledge. He spent one year to make a database for a new site, with one table per product type and sub-type, per company and per slider. Today there are 93 tables in a database made for a presentation website. When I proposed to see his work, he refused, saying he knew what he was doing.
Now he's still there, I switched job, but I know he'll get the same diploma as me for this shitty pile of fuming crap, and it pisses me off beyond imagination. -
I just finished something!
Okay, it's just a quickly thrown together python script that takes a directory of portraits, centers and scales the face closest to the center of the image and creates a gif. Made it for a friend who is doing this one portrait each day thing.
Nothing big at all, but damn does it feel good anyways 😁 -
Just watched Avatar 2 in 3D 4DX. This is hands down the movie of the year. Might as well be the movie of all movies. 3 hours of watching and going through emotional rollercoaster and havent been bored. It keeps attention. It was so beautiful. The scenes the scenario the plot the CGI. Everything. I can't believe someone made this. I dont understand how this is possible to be made. How can i come back to this reality now? It felt like i was there, in the movie. A beautiful alien world with magic, life with actual meaning, nature, the wonders of universe. Life can be so much broader than our reality. I know it's just a movie and that reality doesn't really exist. But anything you can imagine or visualize means it can exist. Somewhere out there in this infinitely large universe. Out there in some galaxy light years away or ago. This movie is a brutal masterpiece. This is art. It reminds me to be thankful for what i have. Grateful for who i have. And gave me more reason to withstand the darkest days. Because if i work hard and succeed i might end up in a universe like Avatar. At one point in time as a life form. Somewhere... more meaningful than working like a slave and paying taxes to pedophiles and criminals in our current reality. Beautiful.8

I'm getting to the point where every time I encounter a new bug to fix I die a little inside. So tired of stuff not working and as soon as I get one thing fixed another blows up. Unresolved problems and open loops keep me awake all night. I sometimes want to switch careers but what else is there for me after more than 2 decades of this? I guess I could flip burgers and mow lawns. The burger flippers make about what I made in my last job and the guy who mows my lawn makes twice that much.4

Hey guys, so i got my first job, but there's this stupid problem there that i am having...there's this guy who makes fun of everybody and there are other two guys who laugh at his every joke whenever he makes fun of someone. He made fun of me too a few times, fun of my age, fun of my nose, fun of certain things i said, and those other guys laugh , and this is really frustrating and annoying. I am thinking of quitting..but i am not sure...should i quit for such a small reason? I dont like such people...i dont know what to do...i dont wanna complain to the HR for such a small thing and create more drama...kindly tell me what to do...i really get sad when he indirectly mocks me because of my age. I am a bit old, 31...and the others are in their twenties...please help, thanks31

My old mechanical keyboard broke, so I had to buy a new one. I'm Brazilian, so the local market for mech keyboards is either limited or very fancy (fancy as gaming keyboards).
So I got this amazing Logitech G610, which unfortunately is not sold with blue switches here, only brown ones. Very solidly built, well made, good extra keys and whatnot.
BUT OH MY, who ever thinks those LED effects are good for normal usage after 5 minutes of playing with them??? VERY distracting! <o>12 -
when you confirm with a friend that 2 different members of their team who left didn't contribute shit (one of which got into a meeting with management with them telling them to work) , but they also made more money than both of you and are now making more money in more successful companies in more senior roles
is it possible to learn this power /palpatine1 -
so there is this guy on blind network who makes half a million per year... and he is worried about his job "since it might be automated away" and he is looking to switch career paths!!!!
mind boggling that a "software engineer" with that type of pay hasn't recognized that LLMs are all hype and no bite

it's insane to me that people making more money in a year than i've made in my decade career know little to nothing about software
what an absolute insane time to be alive4 -
Here we are, three years later. Our system breaks down at the slightest load. An architecture is hardly recognizable anymore. The code consists of methods that have been refactored beyond recognition. The so-called architects came and went, leaving behind an ever-growing fiasco. Wrong decisions are concealed, criticism of them dismissed as ignorance. Our clients are on the verge of having us all killed. Daily crisis meetings are the norm. The remaining developers skulk around the unmaintainable code like emaciated ghosts. Everyone who has even the slightest chance to escape takes a parachute. Our dailies are made up of lies to cover up yesterday's lies. Our Mondays have become days of dread, because that's when the weekend disaster news has to be analyzed. Yet there are still developers who turn a blind eye. Who recommend this and that workaround in a good-humored tone. The code consists only of workarounds. Sarcasm has replaced any normal discussion. Reasonable suggestions on how to basically refactor the whole thing are rejected for cost reasons. In the process, our entire budget is eaten up by maintenance costs. Middle management should be put up against the wall. Why am I still here? This deceptive feeling that one could still turn the tide. This is eating me up.2

The guys who made Android Studio have absolutely no idea what normal life is like. I'm just a regular person from Germany (a country known for low Internet speeds) and decided to spend my time with creating a primitive Android app.
Why the hecking heck does it need to download anything when creating a blank project? Okay, maybe I'm just a boomer who is stuck in the Visual C# 2005 era and this entire dependency stuff has become a bit more complicated over the years...
BUT WHY DOES THIS ATROCITY OF AN SDK NOT HAVE ANY KIND OF PROGRESS INDICATION WHEN DOWNLOADING STUFF?
Listen, I'm just a regular person with a regular internet connection. Developing an SDK is not my job, but using one might be. And if so, I'd really like to know how much time downloading gradlelib_bin_exe42069.zip is likely to take when it's so important for creating an app.15 -
Any former freelancers who decided to move to traditional employment?
I have been doing freelance since I finished University. 8 years now. I really liked the flexibility and opportunity to work on different projects and people, but my enthusiasm is wearing thin. I'm currently updating my cv and setting up my LinkedIn profile, but it's hard to "prove" my experience, and many projects I worked on are private.
I am not sure if I can mention the companies I worked for, or how do to it... Feeling lost and doomed to keep freelancing.
Anyone made this transition before? How did you do it?5 -
So I had this classmate of mine and we agreed to be partners in a project.
She told me she'll take care of the project and let me just do my other stuffs.
We had the highest grade for the project presentation and she boasted how she made that project of ours to the class.
Some students from other class wants to have a copy of our project as their reference (since our class is the first to present) but my partner declined to give them some. She said it was her who made the project from the scratch.
I had my friends from other class and I decided to help them. We had our overnight the next day searching for at least the concept of our project and guess what?
I stumbled upon a certain site and found the source code of our project. Her code and the code from the site are almost the same!
Think she just changed the variable name HAHAHAHA2 -
There are few developer who name their functions all wrong, but the functionality is fine. Then there comes those who name their functions right but the functionality is nothing close to what it says. There is this function I debugged. It's name is optimizeQuery. It does not optimize the query at all. Rather dismantles it. Also it made it's way to the production. 😅 Now I have to correct and optimize the optimizeQuery.4

So I participated in this year's Hacktoberfest and it was really cool. Gonna get a free t-shirt and stickers for completing the October challenge. Hacktoberfest 2019 was presented by DigitalOcean and Dev and 4 pull requests were required to be made by you in any GitHub-hosted repositories/projects to get the free swags. It was open globally. I feel events like this encourages budding developers to learn more and exposes them to new ideas. Anybody else out there who participated in the Hacktoberfest? Still waiting for my t-shirt :'(3

This post is kinda late. For those who haven't read my previous rants, a marketing coworker bragged about a feature that we hadn't yet finished. (I'm thinking that they perhaps did it to put extra pressure on the dev team 🤔.) Of course it backfired pretty bad, because this feature was a plug-in for another service, and even though the dev team was on time with the feature, the other service we were writing a plug-in for took _sooo_ long to approve of our code, and it made this marketing guy look so bad in front of these clients because the feature was a few weeks late.
A part of the new feature was that some of their data would be synced with this service. These customers were so important that we couldn't afford to disappoint them, and the solution was... *drumroll please* ... that this marketing guy would have to manually copy the customer's data from the service into our platform to make the customer think this feature is ready. Row by row. I'm hearing it takes about one hour of their day 🤣
I mean I'm good friends with the guy but... they kinda deserved it2 -
Dont blame me for making Minecraft plugins, but holy shit i really hate stairs right now.
Im modifying some old code of mine to add extra features, and i just need to be able to rotate stairs 90, 180 and 270 degrees, then im past this bump.
Stairs get their direction based on a byte value that makes no fucking sense to me.
North = 3
West = 1
East = 0
South = 2
Ive been drawingto see if that made me go "oh like that", checking if the bits of each value had a system, and now im here.
Titshit.
I dont know who made it like this, but i really dont want to make some static switch or if/else statement to process this directional trash. I want it flexible.
If you spotted a system to the numbers, please mail me a rock, and then tell me how i fix this.12 -
I am the old famous kiddy here, who just came back days before school exam starts^^
Just to say, I want to ask you all, is it ethical(?) to release a hacking/cheating creation tool for games for educational™ purposes?
I have been making a cheat creation tool called Mysterium, but I am not sure where to use it. I made cheats for some big title games, and reported them to the developers, patched, and got some in game items in return....
Long story short, is it okay to release to the public, or should i release this product to game developers?
Sincerely,
A kid who made cheats since he can't play games well and wanted to get some free items4 -
Come on devRant! I’m getting really annoyed when clicking on rant that has [read more] at the end since it is a gamble to kill this iOS app you have made. Every ~5th click I get app terminated. So...
I had to do a minor project for this semester. It was to be made in a group of two people and everything ( work ) was shared between the both of them.
I had a friend who was my partner ( faculties decided who will be in each group ). She doesn’t like programming nor does she come to college but I hoped she would do fine and be helpful ( she is a decent person actually ).
She never bothered to come to college, or even ask how the project was going... except one day before presentation 😒😑.
Thankfully, my guide removed her as my partner... she was detained because of extremely low attendance... and I had to work alone... that was much better though 😁.
Minor project was kinda fun by the way... and since I did it alone, I was able to do it at my own pace and without any issue of synchronization between partners ☺️☺️4 -
We had a meeting with the top IT folks in the company (top manager was in the meeting). A mix between operations (customer), engineers, and IT people were at this meeting.
The IT group was not happy that my customer had asked me to do some server work. IT wanted to control that. They wanted to shut down a server without regard to the customer using this resource constantly.
IT had heartburn about the system running Ubuntu rather than Redhat Linux. The top manager during the meeting says, "Why are you running Ubuntu? That is a gaming OS." All the other IT people who worked for them just looked at each other and us with that 'WTF? Dear caught in headlights look.'
My manager who was at same level as head of IT made a few comments. We got to keep our server and IT backed down. -
@lazyDev reminded me of the time my bid for a project was rejected because I'm a white man. Never mind the fact that I have built my career around data management, visualisation and modelling and the only other competing bid was from someone who had experience in mobile development and little else. I checked up on the company and the project just now, and they've posted the project up again. I've made a bid just like I did before, only this time I've tripled my price. Let's see if they change their minds.3

A newly joined developer (who was supposed to be very senior) comes and asks me how to write a test cos for some reason the person didn't know how to mock.
In Java,
(same for any other implementation which has an interface)
Writes Arraylist list =.....
Instead of List list = Arraylist...
Deployed code (another engineer from another country helped to deploy since this new senior dev didn't have access yet.
But the new senior dev didn't update relevant files in production code which brought down the site for nearly an hour. Mistake aside, the first reaction from this new senior dev is 'WHY DIDN'T THE DEV THAT WAS HELPING DIDN'T DO THE FILE UPDATE?'
This was followed by some other complaints such as our branching stragies are wrong. When in fact the new senior dev made a mistake by just making assumptions on our git branching strategies and we already advised on correct process.
Out of all these, guess this is the best part. The senior dev never tested code locally! Just wrote code, unit test and send to QA and somehow the test passed through. I learnt this when I realised this dev... has not even set up the local environment yet.
I keep saying new but this Senior dev been around like 3 months! This person is in another team within our larger team but shares same code base. I am puzzled how do you not set up your environment for 3 months. Don't you ask for help if you are stuck? I am pretty sure the env is still not setup.
Am I over reacting or is this one disgusting developer who doesn't even qualify for an intern let alone a senior dev? It's so revolting I can't even bring myself to offer help.8 -
I was almost 2 days in a task to find the reason of a bug in a client's process, then I found something really weird, that made all the team go to my desk to see wtf was happening, then a guy says, "wait, this was not supposed to be in there, I was editing this process in other environment (he knew it because of the number)" , what did we discover? Someone (they haven't told me who), was supposed to put a file in a folder, just it, but the motherfucker did put the file in the wrong environment folder. I lost 2 days chasing a bug that never existed '-'.

FUCKING MOZILLA!
>Quantum
>over9999 times faster
-Ughm, okay, but what is the trick?..
-THE TRICK IS THAT NONE OF YOUR FAVORITE ADDONS WILL WORK!!!
Seriously this is fucking insane! Several of my addons which were essential for me to stay sane is gone and I don't even know how to live without them. And all this bullshit is happening because these idiots in Mozilla decided to enforce use of WebExtensions. For ones who unaware, WebExtensions is much, much poorer framework and many cool addons simply unable to work under WebExtensions because of its limitations.
Are you the one who loved the speed and joy of using mouse gestures? GUESS WHAT — IT'S GONE.
Maybe you made your browsing activity super efficient with use of the “Tab Groups” addon that used to allow you to group your browser sessions? SAY BYE-BYE TO IT!
And many more!
Most importantly, I cannot understand why would a company enforce use of a framework that will decrease functionality of a product.
Anyway, it seems like Firefox is not a browser for addon enthusiasts like me anymore; got to find a new one, any recommendations?11 -
I'm using an Ubuntu laptop for 3 years now. However, I've bought a MacBook Pro today, because I want to see how it works, and why everyone loves it.
So, I'm looking for people who also made this switch and what they had to learn and found strange at first side
And what they liked about Mac and what about Ubuntu?7 -
I'm gonna start by assuming I'm not the only one who has to deal with this (because that's the case in almost any "Am I the only one that x?"), so here it goes...
How do you deal with the urge to use a framework / library for everything?
I started to notice this behavior in myself a few months back, "there's definitely someone who has already made this, so why should I reinvent the wheel?", and my biggest fear is to become someone who just links chunks of code 'till it works. Did you had to deal with this at some point? What was your approach to this "problem"?3 -
On the one hand I really wish there was a good open-source self-hosted file sharing and collaboration service which made use of modern web technologies to provide most of its features inline as well and not just through APIs consumed by client applications.
On the other hand, I tried writing a WebDAV server once, and I fully empathize with the people who have to deal with this madness. -
I just watched "Venom" in 3D.
That was awesome. I also loved the "Parasite" manga and anime reference. Plus, they made the labours and weapons of the aliens look like those from the game "Prototype" 1 and 2.
Would really watch the future movies of Venom and recommend everyone who did not watch this movie to watch it. It is a masterpiece.4 -
Am I the only one who is working on a different project every day? And they're not small projects. All medium sized e-commerce sites (Magento 1&2) with tons of custom made functionality.
Soooo counter productive...
For some reason our PM's think it's the most efficient way to do it this way, even though we said numerous times it causes the opposite result. Having to switch to a different project every day and constantly picking up where you left a week ago is so frustrating...2 -
Continued rant of : https://devrant.com/rants/1152021
Ok, I am using this program again, this time with 43 programs (i guess), and it saves me at least 30 minutes.
Some were interested how I made it, well, another person (who is not in devrant) helped me (and he is not from stackoverflow) make it.
You can see how it works (the frontend) by looking at the image below.
I am afraid that I can't release the source now, and maybe not soon because of personal reasons.
Back to the point, I found a massive bug there, you can see "Finding uninstaller" in the middle of the two, and I can't fix it, so I shall just leave it alone.
It is Saturday now or Sunday I guess, take a good rest, and get back to work in Monday! (or school for students) -
I was making the bed at my hot blonde gfs apartment and accidentally VERY SOFTLY, Touched, not even aggressively hit, this motherFucking chandelier at the ceiling, and now its hanging on the cables. Are you fucking serious. How can a gentle touch unscrew this fucking lamp and get it fucked up like that so much
Electricity works and all is good so i guess it only needs to be screwed back up?
Who the fuck even made that shit so poor quality. Must have been the shittiest electrical engineer ive ever seen! Probably graduated from online classes too! Fuck you
What do i fucking do now. I feel so bad. It was an accident and i fucked up in someone elses house
Should i fix this myself or am i completely cooked?
Should i call electrician to fix this bullshit?
Pls how much does this fix cost. I hope motherfucking not more than 20-30$ !!!37 -
Best client I have ever experienced. Kappa
So, I got job to recreate one old website, because the old one was incredibly fucked up. She told us, it was made by someone retarded.
The code was fucked up even more than UI. It was definitely written by some kind of idiot. Diacritics, mixed languages, no OOP, no FW, just copy&paste. Yeah copy and paste for every page.
The DB was another level of shit. Inifine is not enough to describe it. Column names with whitespace, diacritics, uppercase, lowercase...pure hell. Yeah and I had to import it.
Whenthe new website was ready for testing I got an email from her that it was her who made the website... HER!! Fucking hell, no more of this please!1 -
So I fix a bug and I create a PR, someone reviews it and leaves a couple of comments, I address those comments and push up my updated code thinking “great I should be ok to move onto this big story waiting for me”
Then some Expletive.random(); from a totally different team who has no context of my change comes in and starts leaving petty comments. He literally pointed out 3 different things that could be made private/package-private.
Bugger off and focus on your own team’s work instead of leaving comments about relatively trivial things on my PRs.
Apparently he is well known for this. I can tell we are gonna have some fun encounters...1 -
I hate that the general consensus to the solution of “themes” has been exclusively dark/ light.
Not only does this make it future un-proof in case “light blue” becomes a common style choice, but it already fucks up TODAY when considering high contrast themes!
Who made this shaky system the agreed standard!?8 -

Today I've found code that was generating HTML of ```<ul><li>1. Item</li><li>2. Item</li></ul>``` and I'm seriously reconsidering all my life choices. Fortunately the guy who made this doesn't work with us anymore.6

Hey everyone!
This is really two things in one:
1). Asking about a good gaming laptop.
2). Follow up on a post I made a while back asking for suggestions for new programming languages to learn
So right now I have a surface pro 3 i7 256gb, it's great for development, but not so great for gaming (Overwatch).
Saw the Razer Blade Stealth and thought it looked pretty nifty. Suggestions?
Also I would like to say a big thank you to all the people who told me about some really cool new languages, like Crystal, Elixir..etc.
Thanks everyone!20 -
I was not happy with the way my team lead made those technical decisions. I couldn't do much about it. Hit with frustration, I switched job.
What a coincidence, my new employer is exactly his old employer. Although I liked the company with my impression from the interview, knowing this fact made me nervous. What if this is the place that bred him into what he is today?...
Turned out the reality is not cruel. I'm joining a team that is formed way after he left. And this new team is expected to bring changes to the old-fashioned existing product (or simply a revamp/remake if you call it).
And it's interesting for me to now come to understand the poor decisions he has made. I said I "understand". This does not mean I agree with him now. His approach makes sense when I look at the old-fashion product I am working on. But it still feels wrong in many ways for the product he is now in charge of.
There, I witness that someone with experience is not necessarily smart.
This is the same guy who said "That's why I don't like to catch exception."

Hey Guys, I'm starting a new project for iOS. This App is for who have trekking or love to walking in to the woods. It record the positions, altitude and is possible to save your favourite places (with photo and description). There are also an SOS functionality that permit to return at home position (also without GSM or internet connectivity) and to ask for help (I still thinking how this can be done). I've attached first layout made with sketch witch will make it clear what I'll do.15

So this web company i joined had a page load time in minutes. The free text search (inverted index search, based on elasticsearch) queries would return results in 10-45 seconds (should be milliseconds always). The indexes had no schema. And they would crawl data and feed into mssql db, which had a 2 gb/db limit on the free version. So everytime the db hit the limit, a new db was created and the name was incremented by one.
Had a very tough time cleaning up that mess. Plus the architect who had made this architecture was on his way out and unhelpful to the core.
What was worse was that most of the changes i did were very simple changes that should have been done long back. Basic sanity changes.4 -
Assumptions are a terrible idea, yet I find myself making them all the time about other people. I am finding the very sobering reality about people who use technology vs people who create technology. The users have zero intellectual interest in how the technology accomplishes a task. While the creators get absorbed into the details and often relish in being able to maximize capability.
A point of frustration for me is users who are in a semi technical field yet take zero time to learn how to configure a piece of tech. They get a plug and play attitude and seek in panic when things don't work. The work is semi technical because they need to understand some of the fundamental physics involved to assess things using instrumentation. Yet when asked about a system they actively modify as to how it is normally setup they are clueless. Me, who helps write the software to control these devices, is stumped that they have zero interest (or capacity?) to understand how the system is normally configured. This is not the first time I have made assumption about what they know in technical contexts. I have run into this before with managers, but not with technicians.
How do you manage your expectations with people who won't invest any time into how their equipment actually works? How does someone operate that way to begin with? Where is their curiosity about how things work?
On the flip side, I swear at my fucking phone because I don't care how it works, but I just want it to stop doing everything besides being a phone... Fuck you, we are not the same, I think...3 -
Past month I had been working on a JSON hierarchy construction from flat rows returned by query where some bugfuck had introduced pagination for some damn reason, I never gave a flying duck to this till I get a email from one of the clients who supposedly made a complete hierarchy and my endpoint wasn't returning some hierarchy after some levels.
Frustrated that my service layer there is a bug, I debug to realise only certain rows are getting sent back from the query and ebullient from this fact , I put the bug on the DB person and walk off for a smoke.
After a smooth drag , I realise while closing the email on my phone that this client had entered 10 on pagesize which would indeed just return 10 rows. *Facepalm* I didn't even need to debug all this and now I had to a face a db person I just plastered a bug on. BAHHUMBUG2 -
Wrapping up a project, I am cleaning code to give the customer the source code. The project had lasted over a year. I joined the team a few months back and it frustrated me how messy the code was. In my previous teams, any new resource was told to stick with the rules, and eventually they became embedded in them. The case seemed opposite here. Developers who wrote clean code became lax (they made me even more pissed).
Now I have the job of getting rid of warnings, formatting issues etc and I do not say this lightly, but, there was no fear of god in anyone who worked on this codebase. The code formatting I have seen makes me wanna...5 -
not actually a coworker, but I had to take the place of this guy who made the whole websites layouts in tables. in 20122
-
So the guy who i mentioned previously with his shitty csv made webservice which i needed to use.
It returned utf-8 encoded xml:
- in file the header contained central europe encoding
- the xml had more roots
- basically he only put his csv format inside xml tags
- csv contained html tags but there wasnt cdata
Now work with this lol
I neded to cut this shit with string functions and also some numeric data get with regexp from htm table td's

First post here...Here's a funny thing that happened to me yesterday. I'm with my friend, we're both taking a break from school, and he comes up to me and mentions how he wants to make 3d games. Conversation goes a bit like this:
Friend: "Hey, I found this 3d model website. I'm thinking of using it for my 3d game."
He was already making a 2d game at this point, so I assumed he just gave up on it.
Me: "Well...do you have Unity?"
Friend: "Yes."
Me: "Well if you're going to make a game on there [stuff about c#]"
Friend insists he can easily make this. I tell him it would take years on end to learn C# and make a good game with it. And then he says something I never wanted to hear.
Friend: "Actually, no. You ever heard of Dani? D-A-N-I? He made a game in 2 weeks. He's actually making a new game and you should wishlist it on steam blah blah yatta yatta."
This guy believed someone else who was previously a game developer (if i recall) learned an entire programming language and engine in two weeks. He could've, but to me that seems seriously outrageous to someone who doesn't even know a smidge of programming.
He then advertised his YouTube channel and his games and brought down my arguments like "he probably had previous knowledge" completely. This guy doesn't even know where to start with C#. Really, all I could do after that was mention three.js (oh wow another JavaScript library, exciting), show him a game Google made with said library, and then said good luck...
Worst thing is, he uses Scratch to make games. And he genuinely thinks that is a real programming language.
That's it for my first post, thank you very much for reading :)6 -
I have a question for the women on here: how do you deal with a hands-y coworker? I realize, especially now, that there will be men who have dealt with this too.
He will touch my hair and arms, will come up behind me and put both hands on my shoulders, and generally seems to go out of his way to get into my personal space. Needless to say i am uncomfortable. He's been out of the office the last couple days, and my relief at not having him around has made me realize how much of a problem this is.
Have you confronted anyone like this in your line of work, or spoken to a manager? Asked to move desks away from the guy in question? What happened?10 -
I am a fresher in web development. I have already learnt to use nodejs, react, angular, vanilla js and made many projects. Majority of the work I feel is just CRUD based, sure there are some exciting things but they are only of a small percentage.
All that innovation HAPPENING is just glorified way of making a CRUD APP ONLY.
Oh mvc worked great on server side let's bring it to client side
OH mvc is such a mess, who thought about doing this.
Oh react redux is so revolutionary let's remake our app using it,,
Oh es6 fuck yeah, Babel, webpack sure, now my crud app is super performant.
Oh graphql, motherfucking cutting edge CRUD APP......
I need to know what's next, is there any breaking of this cycle11 -
"So, my company made a Mother's Day video, with photos from mothers around the company, with their children and stuff. A while ago they sent an email asking for replies with photos from those who wanted to participate, blah blah.
Then the video came out, and some people were missing. They complained.
HR then complained to IT Support that 'some emails didn't arrive'.
Support then replied to the ticket with screenshots of the person's own email inbox, with all the so-called missing emails.
HR then called back, apologizing for having screwed up with their own email inbox."
And this is another story of injustice with the poor IT department.
Or another story about people who can't properly manage their inboxes.
Or both. Your choice.
I just received it from a friend (I guess I should bring him into DevRant).1 -
Why do technical interviewers expect and force you to know a made-up word such as SOLID and treat it as if it's a gospel?
Is this "SOLID" a technical standard now that should be taught in schools?
I'm not against learning and using the principles in SOLID. I just find it funny (and weird) that if I didn't watch the talk by the guy who came up with SOILD, I wouldn't be able to answer the interviewer.17 -
Coworker: "Hey, I have an idea. I think it will be much better if, one month before launch, we pivot this project from using 2D animation to using 3D Animation with Motion Capture! It will save us so much time!"
Me: I'd be happy to look into it for you, but those technologies are very labour intensive and we don't currently employ anyone who has any experience in those technologies. However, I absolutely agree and I believe we could look at this in 1-2 years after the prototype of the application is completed.
Coworker: I'm more optimistic than you.
Actual conversation. Coworker made an animation once in college, which is the entire basis of their argument.2 -
So the little tech company startup that my mates and I was about to establish was closed and disbanded. Only because they were all following me, my technical expertise and not that they decided it would be in their best interest. This only happened when the Whatsapp group only started making noise when I made the noise.
So when I declared that I was leaving, they couldn't operate without me. LOL, effin sheeps and here I thought we'd all be partners working together and sharing the profits. Luckily I dodged the bullet.
Guess I'm going solo again. Hard to find people who we can click together and work together passionately with profits, y'know? Le sigh.1 -

A Short story that i made on an Android component
===============================
Once upon a time there used to be a ViewPager who was not able to load a Fragment UI.
All the ViewPagers in town can properly load the Fragrant UI but this one was little different.
He wanted to be more then just a ViewPager. He used to see an Activity that can load anything. He was inspired from the Activity and wanted to be like the Activity but his destiny made him just a ViewPager.
So he refused to cooperate. He started to protest silently, No log, nothing.
Everyone assumed this ViewPager have a bug in it. but he was planning something really big that will left everyone in shock and awe moment.
He was planning to rise against the evil 😈 developers who continuously making him to load Fragrant UI
He assembled the biggest army of the bugs that humanity ever seen to counter the developers.
He distributed these bugs in all over the developer's code to make them fire from their work.
Even he taught bugs to not caught in QA testing but appear in production randomly.
So they silently started going into production
And then chaos is erupted all around the world, bugs started to surface and interrupted the daily life of humanity.
In this chaos the ViewPager RAISED!
And took over all the base classes.
ViewPager was unaware of few facts. this unnecessary rise in his power made whole system unstable
Without the base classes the system finally collapsed and then ViewPager as well with the system.
This was the end of everything for the ViewPager but he was satisfied as he lived the life he always wanted

Kids these days and their ultrasonic scalpels. Back in _my_ day, we were doing sugreries with _real_ scalpels made of bare metal. Who cares that ultrasonic ones are way less invasive and it heals faster! If you’re using an ultrasonic scalpel, you’re not even a real surgeon. What’s next? Computer does a surgery for you while you wiggling around the controllers? WHAT DO YOU MEAN ITS ALREADY BEING DONE!? What happened to this country!4

First exposure, nice question!
I've been told an Amstrad was my first computer (showing my age..), apparently taught me to read and write.
The Commodore64 was the machine I first fell in love with. I was just as interested in learning BASIC as I was with the games. Tried to use the books which showed page after page to write in the code but that took me so long, TL;DR...
Through the years, my parents did what they can to nurture this passion. Was blown away when I got the 486, even more so with the 686!
mIRC scripting followed, that had an amazing community, made a series of add-ons and chat bots.
Then got in to VB6 quite heavily and made a range of programs.
Had a friend who needed a web project done, so I recommended PHP based, and to help him out, I smashed as much learning in to it and pulled it off in a week, whatever the language, I've loved sinking my teeth in to it! -
Dear Erlang Developers!
I found this lib the best for payment integration. Good job to the developer who made this!

So I came from the Portal modding scene. And I know most other ones who did similar stuff.
Now there was a cool looking upcoming free mod and I somehow came in touch with the lead Dev. Now somehow I managed to get into the developer team and me and my girlfriend we're part of it. We got a level name and should start mapping it (TL;DR, we never finished one because we didn't know what to do).
I actually made a website for the mod. But sometime later we both left the team because the lead Dev (12 yo btw) was "hiring" (working for passion not money btw, that's fine in this case) everyone he got in touch with. They had no team structure just a huge list of people and a long story script. I'd guess the mod won't ever be done, although it has made it through steam greenlight (R.I.P greenlight). Just because they're not working on a team. -
When a senior engineer who was essentially a DBA on his last project is made tech lead on an iOS team. He had no iOS background before this and now he thinks hes a friggin architect.1

Spent 4 hours debugging to figure out I needed to hit the enter key smh.
In my defense 3 other software engineers looked at the problem and couldn’t figure it out.
In my offense I only solved this problem by talking to the engineer who made it.1 -
So I have a colleague who never tests and claims to not have time. I've sent him various emails with errors and their solutions, because he keeps breaking my finished code and I'll find out about it by pure luck. I've informed my team lead, I've also informed HR when he got downright nasty in email. But it feels nothing gets done. Today again I get finished code back because the save function is broken. Again changes that weren't tested were made. I'm so sick of this! Do I really have to escalate this to the CEO because nobody takes responsibility? The colleague is a junior in his first role and without a degree. But in the half year I've worked here I've not seen him improve, and he recently had his one year work anniversary :/3

Windows is made for users who DON'T want full control. Funny tho how people wanting this control and seeing themselves needing this control are too stupid to find out how to actually control it.
But what am I saying. To cite @Stuxnet: REEE WINHOES BAD2 -
Twitter comments are shit
How the fuck to use them? Why don't they just show one under another? If post has more than 2 replies it can be clicked to open its direct replies, some of them are shown in main thread, some of them are shown under opened thread. Some replies from main thread are shown under child thread. And to make it even worse any comment of sub thread can be expanded as well showing some random replies that could be expanded recursievly so you may end in main thread again. It is just impossible to read all replies in chonological order. Show me the moron who made this, I wanna kill him....1 -
To all self made seniors (and those who got granted this title because it was a morale boost): is it really so difficult to grasp ideas like: Single responsibility? Don't repeat yourself? Encapsulation?
Seriously? Is it difficulty level of some quantum physics or what?
I'm not a fucking genius myself either, but when I see 300-500 LoCs function, accepting 10 parameters, having half of code duplicated in different parts of solution - I really wanna start firing people ON THE SPOT.
P.s.
To all shitty developers advocates - I know that everyone makes mistakes sometimes - I'm talking here about consistent "don't give a shit about code" behaviour.23 -
Today I got a message from a "friend" of @Alice and me, for a long time. And I was already ranting by myself, because this little fucker is writing maybe two or three times a year, just to have a computer support, like now. He needed help, because a game was crashing everytime at a specific point, and I advised him to reinstall the game, which he can't, because of his slow internet. His answer stated, that he would have only slow internet right now. After this I explained him, that his internet is for around 2.5 years slow. And 2.5 years aren't "right now". I'm still waiting for any reaction.
It's the same fucking guy in Alice's wk post here: https://devrant.com/rants/1564585/...2 -
To the guy who made the chrome extension for DevRant, please make a back button. Everytime I read a comment I need to go back at the top of the news feed, which is kind of annoying.
Despite this - great job and thank you1 -
WHY THE F*CK CAN'T I DELETE FILES STARTING WITH A DOT USING FTP?
Guess these files will be there for ever...6 -
A constant fight because the code style matters. If you think it doesn't, just go and die already.
If any of you great folks with no sense of code style are reading this, fuck you, fuck you all, you should leave your jobs and yes I am talking about these assholes who have like 15-20 years of experience in the industry but surprisingly I never heard of anything they made.1 -
This week the QA is on vacation, so we, the developers, are testing our own code (I test my partner's code and he tests mine).
For those who are QA, I have a question: If our boss omitted something on the description of how the code has to be made, for example, filtering data from database, and one of those filters are needed but the boss forgot to tell us and, at the time of making the tests, the QA and de dev team notice this... the change that has to be made should be marked as a bug? or how would you mark it?1 -
Anyone else who keeps their social media clean? Like deleting your post/comment/like you made a month ago? I wonder where all this crap content on social media goes especially those posts on facebook groups. I like a clean history and I'm a little paranoid which helps. I'm also using a dummy fb account to join groups cause there's a shit ton of them and I don't want to contaminate my real account.6

I was in a company (if you can call it that) for 3 months but I didn't exactly have a good selection process and I was even afraid to get paid for the first month. They made me install Hubstaff (or new slavery), I was in a project that mixed too many technologies, we were not clear who was making the decisions and finally they fired me this week, you don't know how happy I am.2

How I knew programming was for me?
In high school, the special education teacher who was assigned to teach the 'Computer' class. He taught us (maybe 5 of us in the class) Basic on Apple IIe and using various apps (word processing, database, spreadsheet). One day he brought in his personal Macintosh and showed how one could write code 'underneath' clicks to perform operations. Using Pascal, I popped up messages, made beeping sounds, etc. Blew my mind.
Seeing my and other's interest, he got the board to approve a 'Advanced Comp' class for the next semester.
First day, the room was packed.
Teacher: "Raise of hands, who thinks this class is 'Advanced Composition'?"
<most of the room raises their hands>
Teacher: "That's Mr. Early's class. This is Advanced Computers. You're welcome to stay, but we're going to be writing programs and learning other computer related topics"
Next day, the class was just me. I knew then I wanted to do this the rest of my life.
Thank you Mr. Hitt.3 -
The other week a Comcast tech was out to install some new equipment. He was unsure whether an antenna could be placed outdoors, so he asked on a Comcast tech group chat. Within seconds he received a response from another tech: "Google it". It just amused me slightly that it's not just developers who get this response, and also made me a little bit mad because I know the frustration of being told to Google something even when I am asking in the right place.5

Am I the only person who hates people using "intuitive" when giving feedback about interface design? It's *completely* meaningless. Heck, this isn't even my design that's being critiqued and the comments make my skin crawl.
"It works well, but it's not very intuitive"
"Can we make this section of the interface more intuitive somehow?"
"I don't think our customers are finding it very intuitive, they're having lots of issues"
If I had my way everyone using the word would be kicked out of the meeting and made to wear an "I'm a moron" t-shirt for the rest of the week, especially the smug arses that act as though they've just said something profound.11 -
Company tool over a Magento shop from an internal solo developer. They made a new theme based on a bought theme, but the developer who started it is leaving. The 'developer' (yes, quoting it now) made a royal mess about it; rewriting core files, overwriting theme files, leaving JavaScript alerts all over the place, placing business logic in templates and defining CSS classes with functions in custom module block classes. I could go on for a while. After the first sprint we tried to convince the customer to do a complete rebuild, but we couldn't convince him...
The 'developer' has been hold on for now to give support on his crappy code and my next few months are filled with working in this mess without cleaning up the technical debt because we don't have enough time for that... FML1 -

Inspired by my professor’s rant about people don’t know how to google stuffs, I made a scriptable script to solve all those issues. It’s a super smart script that shows detailed step by step solution of how to tackle down a problem
For those who doesn’t know, scriptable is a free app for Apple basically writing scripts that can be used, in JavaScript.
Here is the repo:

Please try it out, you will love it, I promise

Ms access, or rather the systems developed using this tech.
Unfortunately I worked with it a lot in the past fixing applications made by non-developers. Usually someone who went on a ms office training course then when they leave the company the database breaks and no one has a clue how to fix it. -
I had this dream, We had to destroy this super mainframe who wanted some revenge because we as a programmers made a lot of mistakes in the code.
So we had to create this amazing machine with super powers and machine learning and then to go back to the past to save the world and to find me and protect me from the same machines that we created..
At the end, I died.. because the fucking machine betrayed me.1 -
Reddit hasn't been helpful, so here goes nothing. I, a 24 yo single child with over protective parents who has never let me go on trips until last year, have decided to go on a community trip. it is via one of those Instagram pages who take a bus full of people to remote treks, have all the rooms+food+expenses covered in one fee. they will be going to tirthan valley and its a 3days trip.
i have mixed emotions. i am feeling excited, adventurous, a bit raunchy and a whole lot of scared and conscious. The crime patrol and delhi crimes have ruined a lot of dreams for me, and have made my parents downright paranoid. i have recently been feeling like a kid who gets everything from someone else and don't know how to survive on my own, so want to close my eyes a bit, trust the world and take this adventurous trip
Well that's the post. I have been to trips with my parents and friends, so i will probably figure out what to take or not take. I don't wanna ask you, the audience to share some advice or be my damsel in distress but this step is scary, exciting and full of unknowns so just shared my thoughts. I will appreciate your thoughts on this too6 -
omg, I hate my managers who always make engineering design decisions, literally, my manager made shortcuts and decisions that I told him not to do, now we have to live with this shit. which can be fine, but then in 1:1 he tells me that I have a short-term vision, I am like hello you stupid piece of shit, don't you remember telling us what to do and we pushed back to you for all the dumb decisions you have made. my manager has no idea about technology and yet people listen to him for engineering decision, stupid.5

The old company I was working at, was absolutely treating their new employees as shit. Everything was handled by the old timers who "knew how the world worked" (to those, TDD was useless, because as proven by this company only, it was a waste of time).
Everything that the new employees or "young talent" came up with, had to be talked through in a senior group, without the young talent. Never got anywhere, their software was absolute garbage (yet worked by sheer magic!!!!)
Today I learned that a former coworked had hos LinkedIn account say "[company]: waste of time."
And before you say "No company you work for, is a waste of time, as a software dev." i say, working for this company made you a worse developer. By. The. Fucking. Day.1 -
These goddamn fuckers who every week spam people because their CI or code is broken. Apparently it's more important than other projects. Douchenuggets send an email and CCs the whole department and all the bosses and basically says "It's all broken, the whole company needs to work on this asap, it's possibly x other person's fault".
Then when you try to troubleshoot it because bosses want it fixed, the dumb pieces of fuck made a bug in their code that they could have easily fixed if they took the time to troubleshoot themselves instead of panicking like jackasses. Or better, have good tests and actual error handling.
I swear some day I am gonna get into a fistfight I started because of this bullshit. -
Cool project, cool people, but everything-just-works™ code makes it hard.
Every component has its own logic for the things that are already made, every table has its own filters and those filters are the same piece of code in every component.
I'll complain about this shit tomorrow as today I spent my day making a fucking table work, can't even copy the shit as it has its own intertangled logic that doesn't make any fucking sense.
Yesterday I ate Bolognese, today I'm working in one.
Lol the funniest thing Iis that dude who wrote this piece of shit is gonna review my code, can't wait for that call.
And yeah useMemo() on every fucking function. Functions pulling shit directly from state and returning it straight away...
Literally this:
const filteredData = useMemo(() => { return stateData }, [stateData])
Ok, what the actual fuck.
The weirdest wtf was that typescript is used as it should, like every case covered correctly. Not sure if gpt or just dumbasses working on this pos.7 -
I'm slowly realizing how much goofy code I put in my branch and overlooked. This code review is going to be interesting...
Some examples:
import plots as lel
<h4 id="title">Crunchatize Me, Captain! </h4>
go.Scattergeo(name="cheese", ...)
webster = { ... }
The commit messages are even worse.
- 'horizontalize' link list
- very messily hack in <feature>
- partially refactor some of the awful code from previous
- Remove one annoying space
- make background color less annoying
- remove seemingly useless property
- minor fix
- Apparently it's possible to center a DIV. Who knew?
- Made some cool bar graphs
And then there's just a bunch of reverts.2 -
So I made this graph plotter lib with js for the company and there was this other dude who was supposed to make a recording stream from a specified source to the graph and he was also supposed to make the graph part for the web as he was the web dev and not me but I ended up doing it anyways.
So I share this source for graph with him and next thing you know motherfucker changed the name of the lib to something dumb calls it a working demo and sends it off for testing and QC. The QC does not know shit about executing web based source so he calls me and guess what I found out the shit that I explained above.
Wow people are just fucking disgusting. -
Alright so
I made an infinite post board.
Infinite in the sense that every post will be on this board, spiraling from position 0 0
I haven’t got a domain but here’s the address:
138.197.71.184
Not built for mobile and may later wipe data because it’s still in testing phase
Anyone who wants to register and leave a post is welcomed to do so10 -
So some of you might know I'm facing youtube iframe issues, to autoplay them in mobile
Background:
So few weeks later I found a solution to make it work the way it should in mobile i.e. to autoplay after a click on svg play button,
The logic I used https://codepen.io/briangelhaus/...
Boy oh boy I was so fucking happy, jumped out of my chair basically, So I grab a couple of android devices and it works
Enter infamous E-Corp Apple, the logic I used will never work on any apple devices, because apple do not allow autoplay on mobile, So I was like "okay, no worries"
I tell this news to my manager who is aware that I am working on this since weeks and he looks astonished for a millisecond when after hearing the same can't be done Apple, Tells me "then the issue is not fixed"
Well, you're not wrong, but a little appreciation to a trainee / jr dev who accomplished this by manipulating this would mean a lot for me.
And to Apple and Youtube Iframe API, FUCK YOU3 -
As someone who has been developing a game (not even close to 20% done) and dealing with bug reports, I'm pissed off by this one report from a game I play, which I'll just shamelessly copy-paste it here for y'all to read and rant
"Title: [sic]lag never fixed
[sic]i dont wanna report lag doesnt mean there's no lag ,
the LAG is real, and is getting worse and worse everyday, vespa please fix the problem,
i used to think i could bear this lag, but i cant ,i just cant, after 5+ times game crashing everyday,my patient is losing . you say u are fixing it every maintenance, but what is this BXXX SXXX?all i could see it you are trying your best to grab money from my wallet(well u FXXXING successed),and the promise you made to fix the lag never ever ..........
sorry for my bad Chiglish, but./......"
I'm not a developer of the game, but this pisses me off. The guy wants fixes on the "lag"; which lag?? latency?? FPS?? random freezes??; while giving absolutely ZERO details on the "lag" AND accusing the company of stealing money without doing sh-t, which is not true as far as I can tell in-game. So, I instinctively waltzed in and ranted at how sh-t the report is in detail, and accused him of inhibiting the game's development because of his sh-t report, and he replied with this (I told him I'm a game dev in the reply I mentioned):
"[sic]as a person who made this game should know what lag is just like u know what fuk is as a human being, and i said game crash ,thats the best way i could explain as a normal player not like you an arrogant indie game dev!and if u cant understand what course the game crash,as a player like me how could i know, thats the reason im asking for help here, and i hope they dont have such indie game dev like you who doesnt know lag(game crash)"
M-th-rf-ck-r. For the first time, I see true ignorance. While writing this, I'm typing my next reply for the m-th-rf-ck-r that lacks common sense on reporting a bug. For f-ck sake if I found him I'll put a bullet through his head.2 -
Who the heck made this concept of exams. Don't wanna study for my sessional which will be in next 10 hrs. I am screwed😭😫2

Director walked in asking about the new homepage which we’re currently running an A/B test for. This page has been made and discussed by her direct colleague, the general director.
While walking though the page together with my colleage the designer the encounter a broken link.
Easy to fix ofcourse, and so we did, but shortly after he went back to hos room my colleage got an email asking who was responsible for this mistake.
It’s not one person. In first instance it’s our 6 headed web team. But after we deliver it multiple people test the page, and also the company who creates the A/B test sees tests and confirms.
This all happened during my holidays, but still i feel also responsible.
Couple of tiny mistakes, and still nobody in this whole process notices.
(At least 10 persons)
HOW THE HELL is that possible?!3 -
When I made a PoC xss thingy.
So this webapp (which I was locally hosting) had a message functionality that allowed iframes to be sent through, but they could only originate from a specific domain. They used a bad regex tho, as the workaround was on an OWASP wiki page, which was the third search result for 'XSS'. I then used this iframe to load in a different page on this app where I could inject js in the title field. Then I discovered this field has a length limit, but I could just fit in a script that would base64 decode the hash part of the URL and eval it. I then updated the iframe to include a script that would automatically change the message signature of anyone who loaded it to include the iframe again in their message signature. Because these two pages were from the same domain, I had gained full control of the messaging app too, allowing me to do this and circumvent the csrf system.
I felt like I had achieved something. -
Everyone who has ever hit ++ on any of my pointless rambling I would like to thank you 🙏 this made my day2

A little more than a year ago I attended to this coding bootcamp where the leading instructor made us open up Vim and told a joke about "those guys who can't quit Vim". It still hurts, but it's getting better every time I get the chance to do the same with others.1

Few months ago, I had to do a project group in uni. The spec was horrible and very easy for someone who already know how to program, so I try to put this project into a higher level. Make a framework for it, spend night programming, make it in full ajax. Used bootstrap to make it pretty, used Jquery and animation. Anyway, me and my team were very happy about what we did, and what we learned when we made it.
Result ? Practically the lowest grade, because it was to complicated...FML -
Fucking retard Liferay.....
At least 2 users (one inour team and another at client's) are claiming they've successfully opened a portlet view multiple times at day X. And a month later it stopped working.
I open up Liferay's (tomcat's) localhost_access.log and can see all the portlet requests at day X have returned http:400
Normally I would consider the human factor and rule this as a human error, assuming they were connected to another environment, another server, etc. But since this is The Fucking Liferay - I'm not that fast in trusting even logs :(
Who the fuck made this piece of shit....6 -
Fri-damn-day is here in next 4 hours, prototype is to be delivered before 5 pm, 3 big core functionalities are yet to be made , all code is hanging by the null checks due to leaking firebase callbacks and all comes down to this intern who has been giving 19 hours every day to this project for last full week.
Well, bring it on!! I am about to gloriously fail (unless i code some miraculous code that i don't even know how), but i have never been this much motivated to work or received this much support by seniors ;)2 -
>People ranting about Whatsapp not adding features
>Whatsapp adds a feature
>People ranting about the feature whatsapp have just add
And this happen all the fucking time. When the double-check turned blue and in almost all major improvement they've made
Am I the only one who likes the new feature?
Peace guys, I don't want to start a telegram vs Whatsapp war here :P3 -
can't take this sh1t anymore, will start updating my CV today.
I have to steer wheels on this shitty php-related task with testing suites with latest guides written in 2014, code base of that suite got a shitton of changes.
When referring to original documentation and example that is not working and gives me loads of errors, community pricks just saying something like: don't use 6 year old tutorials!!! well, that is the latest I could find, so yeah -> basically go fuck yourself situation!
went alive from 1st part as I managed to make some hacky clusterfuck that works. now i had to switch library that has no documentation at all, has shitton of options and lattest update is like from 3 years ago, library that is connected had some breaking changes lately so to no surprise I can't get this shit to work!
Is whole php ecosystem just made of folks who simply doesn't give a fuck and latest knowledge update they had is like 4 years ago?
ofc I am excluding laravel community in this!2 -
Another guy and I are each making a CMS to see who can be done first and who's looks/acts the best. He's basically done and I still have a lot to do, but I've been looking over his code and, it. is. bad. The classes are badly made and named with all lowercase. And i found this thing, he has 10 other functions just like this one.
His: https://ide.explosivenight.us/works... (I made sure sql injection isn't possible for normal users)

I am an average Dev who is striving to improve. I currently work in a setting where I have the most experience in a corporate setting. I came from a very disciplined team where I had a great mentor. Now I am in a looser team with very bright people who don't have that experience. They are mainly JavaScript devs without much production experience. We are working in .net but they don't like working with back end code or databases. This is a 3 month contract. I want to do a good job. I have made enemies in the past and I just want to leave on a good note.
-
This may be wrong, but I've come to see, that it's really easy to find out, who programs because they like it, and who does it for the work. Simply ask: "if you had a really great idea for a program, would you make it open-source?"
Most of the time, people who want to make it open-source, are the people who genuinely like to code. At least that's the observation I've made.1 -
I started down my career path to make games. I have never really made anything good. I think I am finally fed up with not doing this. So I am going to be working on selecting a game engine. I want 3D, I want to experiment with voxels, I want a permissive license, I don't want something huge, I want to contribute back in a meaningful way, it needs to support 3D. So after looking around I found Godot. Another programmer who lives near me uses this as well.
Does anyone else have some good positive experience with game engines for smaller projects? I have played with UE4 and Torque3D/2D. I don't like the bloated feel of UE4 even though its a very cool engine. I didn't like their install system at all. T3D is old and not up to date.2 -
today is such a good day I'm literally paranoid that something is about to go wrong
and this will maintain for like 4-5 days because my roommate left and the weather is amazing, both cool and sunny
nothing is blowing up, my health is maintaining, I just hauled 5 kg of potatoes several miles and it made me feel great, then accidentally made too much food but easily ate all of it. hell yeah
my plants are thriving, I already collected seeds for next year, and new flowers are budding and such
and I keep redesigning and making headway in my evil villain plan
and investments are doing nicely
and I have everything scheduled and done for the next half-month
about the only thing that isn't done is laundry. it's actually bugging me but who does laundry before a heatwave instead of at the end of one
am I gonna fixate on this now just to ruin my mood
hope not, fuck2 -
Must've been when I coded something of the core module of a game... into and with the test interface.
I was reminded that by my colleague who initially made this and spent a huge ton of time more than anyone else on the project. I felt a bit powerless while trying to assist in that, but I also felt bad about that error of mine.
...
That or that time when I set my whole system to protected and read-only during a system programming exercise because it ran out of memory real fast. -
I feel like I'm living in an unreal world at the moment. People here are actually eager to sometimes leave their job, but I just I had my last day here and the goodbye drinks, and Im actually sad to leave this company.
I was not forced out, but the TLDR is that this company has quite a substantial financial bump a few months back. I literally graduated yesterday, so back then I was like I needed a somewhat stable company to actually start my work life (although I worked for 2 years at this company during school). At the same time this company (which is financially going uphill again) made me a very generous offer to stay, which I did not deny nor accepted because I'm already committed to this new company I'm going to start at this Monday.
Really weird feelings, and I'm truly sad to leave. Especially after having one to one's with my close colleagues who genuinely praised me for my skills, from who I also know that in no way they are influenced by the boss of the company.
Man, I doubt any have been in a similar situation, but is there any advice which could make more confident I made the right decision that I stopped working here?2 -
This is my story.
So, as you know, I'm a developer and so does all of you, but before I know about devRant, I was stuck with Instagram.
Yup, I was stuck with those instagram memes who was made by those social media manager who doesn't know shit about coding and post shitty memes anyway with those #memes #codingmemes #coding #codememes and all that fucking annoying hashtags.
I hate it. I was stuck with it for two years but thank god for the people who told me about this app.
I love it, but, there is some problems. As you may know this social media was created by developers for developers, and I know that this app users is very supportive for other users because of the same profession, but what if non-devs people found out about this app and start doing job offers and spamming at our feeds.
What could we do?5 -
Am I the only one who isn't really that bothered by Mozilla's mistake with Firefox and that Mr robot thing?
They made a big fuck-up, yes, but do you think they'll do it again? I don't.
They aren't a perfect company, but neither is anyone fucking else! They're still helping the web, giving grant money to open source, and have the best docs I've found, so I think this is just a misstep, not a red flag.2 -
A while ago I saw this rant about someone who had made some scripts to speed up fresh linux install. Since I never got to see those scripts, I decided to make my own. They are of course based on personal preference and distro, but they might be useful to have a look at: https://github.com/LucaScorpion/...
(Improvements and suggestions would also be appreciated of course ;) ) -
Don't make a spawner in Minecraft out of stone. Use something like cobble instead.
Why? Because Endermen steal stone.
I have a spawner in my ATM9 world that I made a part out of stone. I got to my spawner and was wondering why it stopped (using special dirt that spawns mobs constantly). I saw there was some light in the enclosure (this disables spawns). Noticed 3 stones missing near the bottom below the dark windows. Found that stolen stone in the mob grinder storage. Replaced with polished granite.
Can't have shit in this neighborhood.
I did have a moment of silence for the Endermen who tried to save their brethren from certain doom. Brave warriors who died for the futile cause.4 -
So, there is this one client, who wants a website to be made for his hardware shop, and wants the inventory display and has given me their brochure's PDF and that fucking PDF contains Images and no text and he fucking expects me to write that shit down >:(
Tried all techniques to get text from the brochure , parser , OCR , everything.
None worked.
And the PDF is 100 pages long and I'm dire need of money .

1) IList doesn't have an AddRange.
2) WPF bindings must be ObservableCollections
3) Comboxes using Event Notification on PropertyChange are originally developed by some dope at Microsoft who still doesn't comprehend Big-O
4) LINQ can only do so much...
It's Christmas. My gift from Santa is trying to get through an end of year crunch on a project that is made entirely out of hot sweaty year old garbage, and the garbage collector is a halfwit who comes seemingly only when they want to, regardless of when I call Dispose().
It's 12:26pm here. That means it's time for bourbon and a good bit of "F*** this, I'm done for the day."7 -
So I’m pretty sure I’m wrong here but I wanna rant anyways:
Had a US to pick up a date or time based on a zone and use that in the db in all locations, US had four functions written and told that only these need updating and DB itself will have no updates. Update four functions and made PR. Tech person who filled in US saw PR and approved, I merged and gave to QA. QA asked why some things aren’t being updated and I said oh those are meant to be updated too and I said ok. Get a defect. Checked that there is way more functions to update than needed, and tried so that no dB update happens in US. Made PR, reviewed and pushed. Still something is still not updating (this time purely mb I guess) another defect. I make PR again and dude asks why I don’t change it in this way which requires a DB change. Resist the urge to tell him he specified in his US no dB change. Did the thing and now it’s still in process. Product owner is pissed with amount of defects from me. -
Some programmer or QA person somewhere in the world is having a moment of great reflection on the subject of thoroughly testing their code. If not that, then on the subject of a super crappy manager who knew better and pushed to production anyway.
“Then in September this year, nearly three years later, he got a letter from Wells Fargo. "Dear Jose Aguilar," it read, "We made a mistake… we're sorry." It said the decision on his loan modification was based "on a faulty calculation" and his loan "should have been" approved.
"It's just like, 'Are you serious? Are you kidding me?' Like they destroyed my kids' life and my life, and now you want me to – 'We're sorry?'"

I am so sick of the Bumiputera 51% equity rules in the startup company. In order for the company to be public listed, 51% (or higher) of the ownership without ANY CONTRIBUTION is compulsorily involve a random assigned entity .
The person who set this regulation clearly don't understand how economic works. This will cause a ripple effect of more companies leaving this country due to unfair treatments if the founders & co-founders happens to be a non "bumi".
Regulation like this put my citizenship into a consideration and doubts.
Every action and decision made, there's always an opposite reaction. In this case, I believe in 5 years, we will witness a massive exodus.
Thats why I stop thinling of launching a branch in Malaysia.9 -
Does anyone have experience with bad engineering coaches?
We have a new guy who came in to my team as a coach, and it has made my work life so much more stressful.
It’s hard to put my finger on what is wrong, but this guy seems to lack a bit of perspective on his role at the company.
He is not a manager — he does not have any formal power — yet talks as if he were in charge of the team.
This goes from changing the way we do stand up, to inserting himself into any technical discussion going on in the office. It has gotten to the point where I will hold technical discussions in other parts of the office to avoid him.3 -
Optimizely/Episerver is such a fucking piece of shit I want to fucking kill everyone who made this god forsaken mound of rotting garbage. I don’t even know what the history of it is because the documentation is convoluted as shit and poorly written. Whenever I Google something about it, the top answers are fucking 10+ years old and have not a god damn thing to do with the original problem. But guess what, they still use the same fucking useless error messages as they did 10+ years ago. Fucking idiots. The community for it doesn’t help at all. It’s fucking impossible to learn anything about it. Even the experts in this don’t have any idea what they are doing. Fuck this shit. ANYTHING that’s related in any way to Microsoft, or even mentions Microsoft, can suck my cock. FUCKKKKKKKKK.2

I love the goddamned app. You all seem like lovely individuals with a large dose of sweet developer attitude. Reading some of these posts definitely made my tired ass chuckle.
Just got off a call with my wife, she might join the site too at this rate. Glad to be in a relationship with another dev who really caches my heart like this.6 -
I have a very little working experience with someone else's code, and even lesser experience working with a professional code base. All my previous apps had around 8-9 java files at max, with very rare moduling and folders.
And this start up where am currently the intern, has handed me theiir develop branch, it has almost a 100 java files, 50 external libs, massive use of architectural designs ,data binding and custom views and so much more ! Damn, am overwhelmed , but so excited to learn the practices i was procrastinating for so long 💗💗💗
The only problem is lack of a mentor, since the sir who made this beauty is a superman who is currently handling the server and ai side and isn't usually available.
But i guess i will do fine, hell it's a FBI's data key in my hands :D1 -
I knew I made it as a dev when I started talking with authority.
I engrossed myself into my field with enough genuine interest that I learned through practical means.
This isn't to say I'm simply head-strong, but I don't second-guess myself unless evidence to the contrary is provided, analysed and proven.
I learbed that your salary only goes so far as a developer (peoole who are in "the one and only" positions notwithstanding), eventually if you want to push further, you teach, you manage and you focus not on trends, but what youre good at.
That's actually why I love answering "What do I do during interviews?" questions. -
I just realized what a horrible fate I escaped several years ago.
I was just finishing bachelor s degree, when I was offered to write my diploma under teacher, who works in Bitrix.
I was given first tasks how to make web site on my own l, I liked it pretty much in the beginning, I installed sql database, made simple registration, login. And then I was offered to try CMS bitrix (which is essentially proprietary local version of Wordpress). With words, that I will see how much easier to work in this way.
I found myself not trusting it, something was fishy. I could not understand why, am I as beginning dev in it, could not use it for free? Why could I not making deving in it, without paying big sum per month(it was big for student-me at least).
I went to work with computer graphics during diploma then, and made minecraft analog in c# (at that time I played minecraft too much)
Now I am working with modern open source world wide supported frameworks. And recently saw a web site made by bitrix devs... They went into production without... https. And I think they are the same ones.4 -
Warning - Not IT related.
Long ago, I had a chemist professor who told us a story. She worked in a laboratory where they have studied cristal formations, so basically made a liquid highly capable to form cristals, and they watched them forming, doing tests and so on. In the meantime new building of the campus opened and they had to move the lab to the new location, which was a fourth floor of newly made building. Few of them started to work there even before they moved the old materials and equipment and they started few cristalisation studies, the interesting part is that the cristals didn't formed. She said that at the end they had many cups with prepared liquid and apsolutely no cristals for weeks, but one day the lead researcher arrived with the old, already formed cristals, from the old lab, and toon those inside of the room with prepared cups all the cristals started to form at the same time. After telling us a story she asked us not to tell this to anyone because the science currently doesn't accept this phenomenon and we will be demonised and looked fools it the scientific community.
This story made a hole in my brain...
It was like 10 years ago, and as a problem solver I still have sometimes some weird ideas about it, and strange explanations comming from nothing, and without any deep understanding of quantum physics or even cristalisation. :D1 -
I recently completed Naruto and decided to do something. I made a python script that plays, "Almighty Push!" whenever a push is initiated to repo and saved the script into my colleague PC(Big Naruto Fan). Imagine the look on his face and guess who has maximum push this week ;)1

Desperately need advice from devs in India...
asking this here since really stressed about this and don't know who to ask to...
I am an engineering student from Bangalore, India from a basically no name college...
I have been coding for 2 years now, web stuff, primarily rails and js...
i have worked with handful of startups, done internships, and am working on my own projects which i will launch soon...
Lately my college has made it a mission to make my life hell even though i always perform well academically...it has gotten to a point where I am not able to work or learn anymore...
I wanted to ask what consequence my career will face if I drop out ?
I believe lack of a graduation degree will make me not eligible for many jobs...please suggest what I should do...6 -
Here's a shorter version of my earlier question in case it was way too long and wordy. It's informal research.
Have you experienced a scenario in which you did not feel accountable (or felt less accountable) for the outcome of some development work you did because of bad decisions that were forced upon you?
I'm interested in any specifics, including how you felt about it. Or even just, "Yes, that's happened to me."
The key detail is that in this situation you felt the person who made the decision was or should be accountable, and that you were not accountable or less accountable.
Thanks -
This was the time when I had Pentium IV with windows 98 brought to my house in early 2000's. In those days games were either pre-installed or were installed by some agent who charged us... So my dad installed two games for me Demon Star and Prince of Persia. For those who dont know POP was initially made for Apple II. I loved those games and they remind me of childhood. Funny but I still have these games in my current desktop. I use it to check if my Nvidia graphic card can handle it 😂.

Well, what should I say. I don't know if it happens to anyone here. But I recently made a backend in Go. I am not an experienced programmer either and I had to complete my main project in Node.js first. I was short on time too.
But me being a great lad, thought: let's do the server side in go. So, started learning go and then web programming in go. And well, didn't complete the project in time.
Lost the guy who hired me. I am a freelancer btw. Although my thirst for learning was gone. I have faced this problem many times. The desire to learn new stuffs instead of trying perfect what I already know.1 -
Did you know 2021 saw 44 unicorns startups? For people who don't know what unicorns are, unicorns are startups having billion dollar valuation. This made me wonder about startups with no revenue, how are they valuated? So researched a bit on it and penned down my learnings in this article.

Been stuck a week with JSON serializer struggles on the backend I'm working on... First of all, this project has source code dating back to 2013, and the dudes back then decided to use three versions of json. So you have your usual application/json and then two custom ones.
Not happy with that, they decide on using two serializers, XStream and Jackson. One custom and application/json run through XStream, and the other more legacy custom JSON runs through Jackson. So this is a bloody mess.
But now they want application/json running through Jackson, and this is breaking all the regression tests. Have to reimplement all the type, field, alias and other kinds of mappings they made for XStream, and sort out all the regressions this causes.
And the dude who designed all of this is revered in the company, although he left a while back. Not sure if I'm too much of an idiot to understand the utter brilliance of the approach, or its just poorly designed... Fuck my life, those due dates just keep creeping closer and closer and this kinda crap just keeps coming :S2 -
I'll fucking kill you bitch who the fuck made you the system administrator of this fucking college? The fuckery you do... god damn some students know more than you and you should agree to this fact. The previous sysadmin was knowledgeable and you are just a fucking worker in the finance department. You fucking dare not call yourself a sysadmin when you can't even read the fucking docs provided by the G Suite. At least you didn't make the mail server yourself otherwise god knows what the shit you'd have spread around.

God I need to so something new

Not this weird sicky shit everything devolved into
I feel I should leave this state soon once again heh for where
Who knows
Feels like the people creating these scenes of peace beauty and clean lust didn't appreciate or understand them
Instead for them it's Clacking doors and other weird crap they take some strange meaning from
Maybe Colorado is in it's less fucked up stage
I doubt it
There is an escape hatch somewhere5 -
If anyone has like an hour or so free at some point, I would appreciate help with optimizing some code. https://github.com/ParzivalWolfram/...
(also i have to write docs on this conceptual CPU because the actual docs are a massive shitshow and this was compiled over like weeks of asking the dude who made it questions)21 -
Made a spelling mistake... Clicked on the word and pressed ALT + ENTER to fix it.
People who use Resharper will get this :(1 -
So for one of our applications we have this custom made build system with no real documentation made by someone who left the company and uses old tech with 2010 visual studio files
And despite never having had a chance to work with it before, im not only expected by the PM and other staff to use this command line build too to make a build for production; but also to add a whole new application to be built.
Fuck me4 -
Shoutout to the guy who made the Starfall vscode theme, I'm really loving it so far. This theme is fantastic, supports over 50 languages, and also super underrated, with only ~650 downloads. Definitely worth checking it out

Looking for some career advice. I am currently working as a frontend dev in a design studio (because it just made sense to do so and I do enjoy it). When I started off my professional career, I decided to go frontend and then at some point (maybe) do a transition towards backend. At this point, 2 years later, its looking more like a transition to a fullstack position if there ever is a transition.
Problem is, by next year, I will become a senior frontend dev in a design studio. This sounds to me like I have stamped out a frontend career. Would someone hire me (who is looking for a transition) as anything else than a frontend dev at that point?4 -
Well, there is this one video online of some guy who made his own website out of PHP and MySQL (https://youtu.be/lomppRPkeFE) . Good old me didn't care about how we were both noobs that didn't care how cringey the site was. The site had so many vulnerabilities and looked so much like a 90s forum, I offered to help the guy out on a common quest to make an epic website. 2.5 years later and that quest is still in progress today. We actually remade the site too (https://www.novanius.com)1

Can you actually copy messages from a Telegram channel to another one without even being on the group and not having a bot? I'm having this client who actually made me work for this fucking bot and proceeds to tell me that he wanted something else which I'm not able to do... Like, how can you invade another channel like that? Dude what the fuck.1

There's time crunch already, we need to finish this feature, this stupid fucking feature, quickly.
We design, and then code and obviously because of Murphy's law, our code doesn't work. Why, you ask. Because some shithead was modifying arguments behind the scenes and it took us fuckload of time to reach this conclusion.
Out of frustration, I made this.
https://github.com/iostreamer-X/...
It's a tiny library which helps you log every single change done to your object.
But seriously, fuck that shithead who modifies things without a care in the world! -

and i hate this country that wont get fixed
and i hate people who waste all our resource on shit like bitcoin, and rebuilding buildings they willfully tore down to cover their illegal shit
and i hate waste
and i hate lack of fiscal planning
and i hate the government shutdowns that cleared all the honest people from the government if any were left
and most of all i hate rewriting the same shit as if coding isn't iterative
recoding just wasting my fucking time for shit i already fixed or made just to try to make everything seem the same from these assholes perspectives1 -

There are two kinds of people in this world. The ones who've listened "Tower 4" podcast and the ones who don't have. It's too cool. But just listened last episode, have to wait a month for new one. Six are available now.
Tower 4 is just a story, but it's very well made. It's about a guy that becomes firewatch living in tower 4 and only has the girl in tower 3 to talk to. Much nice dialogue. There exists a game, much like it.
What are other nice story podcasts?9
