He went up to the boss, dragged a big white board into his office.
Wrote company name, drew a big d**k pic on it.
Circled the d**k's head, wrote boss' name and drew an arrow pointing to the circle.
Titled the board reason for me leaving.
Last I heard, they filed a case against him. Not sure about the outcome of it.14 -
Hey everyone,
For about the last 24 hours, there was unfortunately an issue with the algo feed where scrolling did not show more rants. This has now been fixed.
One of our background queues stopped processing for some reason which caused rants to not properly get marked as read for algo.
If you notice any other issues with this, please let me know. Thanks!11 -
Today we were all called into a meeting and the CEO was livid. He went on a rage about how the CTO was wasting money on useless shit (GitHub Enterprise). He said I bought laptops for a reason if there’s a fire someone better protect our assets and code. He wouldn’t reason with us and went into github and deleted everything. The CTO was fired and no one is leading our team. Wondering if I should quit 😶29

HP Virtual Agent, you're about as useless as the fucking hardware that I'm troubleshooting. What part of fucking "Arch Linux" do you not understand?! Not everyone runs your fucking assumed OS choices - WanBLowS 7, 8 or 10. What's more, the hardware that I'm troubleshooting doesn't even support those bloody operating systems.
Long live HP and its random freezes due to poor thermal management. And long live Intel's fucking wireless drivers, that for no good reason disconnect after half an hour and require me to restart NetworkManager to (hopefully) get shit connected again. And long live those useless fucking "virtual assistants"!!!16 -
For some reason my tech enthusiast mind gets really enthusiastic about the fact the Google calendar icon is now based on what date it actually is.25

Honestly, I’ve been complaining a lot about the company I joined a few months ago and especially about the code base and I just have to say ...
With good fucking reason, look at this shit, every single *.js file of our Angular app is manually added inside the master page
Not even minimized what the actual fuckkkkkkkkkkk15 -
It's funny how every one says Google respects your privacy.
I remember a few months ago, one of my manuscripts was removed by Google because it "violated the terms and services."
First of all, it's just a psychological crime thriller about murder. I read the terms and services and it said nothing about murder, so I didn't violate anything.
Second of all, assuming they removed it for the reason it was all bloody and about murder, how would they know that? Did they start snooping and read my manuscript?
Fortunately, it was recovered the next day, but if Google cares so much about your privacy, why would they read my document?28 -
New guy at work asks me for a code review. 16 lines added, and I have 4 comments, all about readability. Only the major stuff because I went easy on him. I even ignored a missing semicolon.
Guy comes to me and explains that code review is about if code works, not what it should look like. "You want me to write it your way, and we'll have endless arguments if that's how you do code reviews. But I'll do your requested changes." Reduces his entire code to two lines, which make a lot more sense.
Later, I ask him why he used "void 0" anyway. I was wondering if he's thinking of security aspects or if there's another reason. His answer: "because it looks cool and nobody else does it". -
>>Gets email about a social issue and completely disagree with the organization that sends email.
>>clicks unsubscribe and puts "I didn't sign up for this" as the reason why.
>>2 days later get another email from the exact same place
>>clicks unsubscribe and types "Listen here you victim playing fuckers. I told you to unsubscribe from this email list because I don't want to receive emails from your bullshit organization. Fuck you."
>>Gets a confirmation email that my name has been removed moments later.
Moral of the story: Strong language gets the job done.19 -
Dear Customer,
I think you misunderstand the reason I sent you some documents for review.
I sent the examples to you so that you could see what your inputs produced.
I didn't send them to you so that you could fart out your mouth and about what you want like a little kid.
If there's shit on the page it is because you put that shit in the system ....
Please have someone else who is going to put a little bit of effort into this 'super important project' contact me.
Also bullet points don't work like this:
- Here I talk about a thing but
- and here I continue that thought with no context and incomplete sentences
- Also this is unrelated.
- But this is about the first bullet point again.
- Here I repeat another bullet point but I say it in a completely different way.5 -
Keep this between us, but I got sexually assaulted in a work party by a very old guy who worked at the venue.
I didn't bring it up because a) I had already resigned from that company and was on my notice period, and b) I was going to leave the country in a few weeks and couldn't be arsed having to think about it on my vacation or even after.
Still pretty awkward with myself because after that, the very drunk me got emotionally unhinged, went outside and cried my eyes out for no reason. 😐
Like, it wasn't even the worst assault that has ever happened to me so what was the hysterical crying and panic about ffs?18 -
I’m back at devRant.
I was active few years back.
What made me comeback is me deciding to delete social media apps in my main phone.
The reason for deleting is that some topics/post/feed triggers a painful experience I had this year.
The painful experience is my wife cheated on me.
I’m not here for pity.
I just want to let the married ones know here that it’s not all about coding or work.
You should also try to keep the fire burning with your significant other.
Else someone comes by and will keep that fire lit.5 -
Messaging me at 4:30pm on a Friday about a high priority issue currently in production.
My reply: a link to the code review from 2 months ago that literally explained the problem and what to do to fix it. That got implemented. Then removed. For some reason...
Feels good.2 -
Today I visited a partnered company, best summarized as "our people are the best at what they do, although we haven't figured out what it is that we do".
It was fucking awful.
Halfway a presentation about "capitalization on the internet of things" which featured nothing about hardware or protocols at all, a guy stood up and started talking about improvements on ecdsa and schnorr encryption or something... for no apparent reason. Then followed a bunch of pretty slides about the sharing economy... after which the CEO concluded with some vague speech about decentralized management of assets in a globalist world or whatever...
It was like a bunch of pretty smart people all had been locked up in some kind of closet with mirrors on the inside for six months, discussed their best ideas with their own reflections, then immediately grouped up and convinced an investor to fund their startup.
Ugh, I have to wash my ears and eyes with bleach. My brain is flooded with pretentious bullshit buzz and over the top startup decadence.
Actually, I think this sums it up best: There was a framed oil painting of the CEO with his dogs in the conference room, and the bathroom had a large marble Charizard statue watching me pee.8 -
1. Fucking MySQL database clusters.
There's nothing fun about MySQL clusters. Sometimes they start producing deadlock errors for no apparent reason... well, there's probably a reason, but it's never a transparent easy to find reason.
What was even less fun is that those errors took down a Sentry server. When your error log server goes down through ddos from your database messages, it's time to rethink your setup.
2. Wiring up a large factory with $2 arduino clones, each with a $2 esp8266 wifi chip, with various sensors for measuring flow of chemical solutions (I wanted cheap real time monitoring as an early warning system next to periodic sampling).
The scaling issue was getting over 500 streaming wifi signals to work in a 55c moist slightly corrosive atmosphere with concrete and steel everywhere, and getting it all into a single InfluxDB instance for analysis.12 -
Gaming anytime!
The reason I become intrested in computers was gaming.
Given I started out as a game dev, playing games helps me think more about it and imporve my skills.
Also sometimes it reduces my productivity :P3 -
"please use a secure password*"
* But don't make it too secure, 20 Charakters is enough.
Why would you fucking do this? The only reason I can think about is a scenario like this:
"How do we store the passwords in the database?"
"Just like anything else?"
"So I create a VARCHAR(20)?"
"Yeah why not? It's good enough for a name, and you shouldn't use your or anyone else's name as a password, so it should be perfect"10 -
Business guy: hmmm, what do you think about getting the programmers to come to the office more often?
Me: uhhhh explain?
BG: feels like when working from home they might only give it their 90%, but in the office they'd do 100%.
Me: let's not talk about how you reached that conclusion for now. If you force them to come more often they will quit.
BG: what about the new people we want to hire?
Me: most jobs have full remote available, why would anyone pick us?
BG: hmmm. Btw next week we'll talk with some stakeholders about trying to get some outsource help. You know, for repetitive stuff that doesn't require in-house engineers.
Me: like what?
BG: you know, repetitive stuff
This is suffering. Is my only choice to tell the guy that he has no clue what he is talking about, should STFU, and let the technically capable people to handle themselves? As in, we already do but for some reason he still thinks he knows better than the people doing the god damn job? But if I do so, the salinity in his blood will bring other problems upon us.10 -
I managed to take down an entire school network with one VPN.
In short, I ran a personal VPN and eventually the System Administrators at my old school managed to pick it up as unknown traffic. For some reason, they managed to block the port but not the IP so I changed the port to 443 and their automatic system blocked port 443 on their entire network essentially rendering HTTPS useless for a few hours.
I never got approached about it but my school invested in a new IT team.3 -
When you are so angry about something you slam your fist on the keyboard, break the Enter and surrounding keys, rush to the closest shop that sells keyboards, fail to buy one because they're all too shit, come home and end up fixing your keyboard, then get even more pissed off because you had already gotten excited about that new keyboard, and end up writing shitty comments for shit you haven't even finished yet because you're too pissed off BECAHSE EVERY FUCKING THING IN THIS WORLD IS FUCKING BROKEN AND SHIT. AND NOW I HAVE A MIGRAINE AND MY LEG IS ITCHY FOR SOME STUPID FUCKING REASON!17

The best part about solving problems in code is there is no one right answer.
Except for this. This is clearly the wrong way. This is garbage and you are a garbage person for writing it. This code you wrote is the reason your own children will never love you.1 -
When somebody started bragging about his superior coding skill then I said that talk is cheap and that I wanted to see code (for some reason, this pissed her off) and then she started to DDoS me :^)
spoiler alert: she got a huge fine for it AND got fired from her job (whose servers she used to perform the DDoS)11 -
I wonder if I'm getting tired of making websites for people. I just "fired" two longtime clients today without really caring all that much. Not for no reason. They just were asking too much for too little. And I was getting bored of them. When I think about what I want to do in my spare time, the first thing I think about is creative writing. The last thing I think about is code and website design. It didn't used to be this way.3

For fuck sake, stop complaining about the lack of privacy everywhere.
I'm not saying that worrying about your privacy is bad, I also really want to be protected and I know the risks we run when put our information on the net, I care about my data, but please stop acting like whoever uses Google, Facebook or Windows is a fool and you're the only genius around.
Because guess, I use their services and when I use them I'm explicitly authorizing them to process my data, to track me and to create a profile about me. It's an exchange, I know what they're doing and I've control on the data I'm serving them.
If, for some reason, I want to be more protected then I fucking use some open source iper-safe alternative, and that's it.
Seriously, I'm happy if you use those fancy alternative services for everything (for your reasons, I don't care) and I'm glad if you decided to don't use any closed source service anymore, but please, stop screaming against who uses them19 -
Such amusement.

so I have a junior who merged in a fix for an issue yesterday, and it was tested today and there was an issue with his "fix".
so he comes to me and says "hey this is an issue" and i'm like "yeah, remember i told you about that yesterday when i tested your changes? why did it get merged?"
so i tell him "its because of <reason> and that's why i specified the approach that i did in the ticket originally"
so he's like "ok i'll try that" and before doing that i leave him with "you will probably want to do <thing> because of <reason> with that approach"
so fast forward to like 10 mins ago. literally half the fucking day has gone by.
"hey, so i can't get this to work"
"yeah its because <reason> but what you /can/ do is <same fucking thing i told him to do this morning>"
"oh ok, ill give that a shot  "
and yet he's had this chip on his shoulder since reviews because he feels like he should have gotten a bigger raise and he's worth more than he's paid. and wonders why after 3 years he still hasn't been promoted from a junior.
and don't fucking say 'that's above my pay grade' all the time like you aren't fairly compensated, and then struggle to employ the same fucking patterns in a code base you've worked with for 3 years now.4 -

This morning i wanted to work on my freelance project and it was corrupted for some reason, i started panicking, shed some tears, did a few shots, shed some more tears and after about 30min of doing this I realised that my project is on github and everything's fine now

My company is providing cloud infrastructure to our customers. For research purposes we are running a little openstack cloud in our laboratory datacenter were we can test stuff before implementing it in the productive environment.
Last week the manager asked me to shut down the cluster over night and only power on the servers when we need it. (about twice a week)
The reason: it produces too much heat.
My answer was: No.
First off thats not how cloud infrastructure works, and how about a proper climate control?
Sometimes i ask myself in which parallel universum our managers live 😑3 -
IDK, there's something about PCB circuits with all the components on it... For some reason I find them very calming, I think they could even help me with my anger management and/or sleep problems (if I had any).
They are so nice and neat.. so strict and in order. Everything has its own place and its own path. Everything in there has its purpose. That's so nice :)

"Most coders think debugging software is about fixing a mistake, but that's bullshit. Debugging's actually all about finding the bug, about understanding why the bug was there to begin with, about knowing that its existence was no accident. It came to you to deliver a message, like an unconscious bubble floating to the surface, popping with a revelation you've secretly known all along. A bug is never just a mistake. It represents something bigger. An error of thinking. That makes you who you are. When a bug finally makes itself known, it can be exhilarating, like you just unlocked something. Because, after all, a bug's only purpose, it's only reason for existence is to be a mistake that needs fixing, to help you right a wrong. And what feels better than that? The bug forces the software to adapt, evolve into something new because of it. Work around it or work through it. No matter what, it changes. It becomes something new. The next version. The inevitable upgrade." - Elliot, Mr. Robot6

One reason behind so many startups today maybe companies treating employees as slaves...😑😑

!dev rant about social media 🤡 s like this one.
I hate when people seek for a reason to bitch on social media. This tweet for example.
1) I went to a small high school (small compared to a lot) and we still had a personal management class and this was covered.
2) Who the fuck uses checks still.
3) It's addition and subtraction, not brain surgery.
4) if you actually cared, Google it. There's a shit ton of information on balancing a check book out there.
5) You're probably in debt due to a shitty lifestyle combined with terrible money management, but keep playing victim. It's never your fault.
But of course she doesn't care. It's another case of someone wanting a reason to bitch and moan on social media. Get a hobby you clown.28 -
My dream project. Although we have tools like facebook, twitter, whatsapp, you name it, and although whatsapp is 'officially' (between quotes because I won't believe that until proven by source code or something) end-to-end encrypted, I would like to create an open source platform which basically everyone can use which features all usual tools like email, calendar, voice/video calls etc while being entirely decentralized/end-to-end encrypted.
I'd like to create this because of my own daily struggle of refusing to use closed/non-encrypted tools for communication while a lot of people don't care about privacy and don't want to use tools like Signal, Tox and so on.
It's me not about making money, it's about providing a safe place where people can do their things without the possibility of being spied on without reason.16 -
Yesterday I had an interesting interaction
- I complain about not having tickets for something, as it makes it unclear who needs to do what
- manager tries to call out on me for “not giving precise infos”
- A frustrating argument starts, ends up with manager defending himself telling we need a meeting with [other team] to sync on infos that are not clear
- meeting starts, manager starts to make a buffoon about himself
- other dev out of nowhere tells that the manager is not giving the task to him for some reason
- other manager is speechless at our manager’s incompetence
Managers.😎1 -
Ranting here , about our fucked up life is like talking to a cat. You don't know if they are listening, you don't know if they care, but for some reason, it still helps ...3

We were in a c class learning about pointers, the teacher was doing small stars on the board to explain the basics of them.
After a short while we all understood, or so we taught.
Someone asked about double pointers, so the teacher put 2 stars on the board to explain. THEN THE IDIOT OF THE CLASS GOES AND BLOODY ASKS IF WE COULD REPLACE THE 2 STARS BY A BIG ONE.
I MEAN OF COURSE JUST PUT A STAR EMOJI TO MAKE A DOUBLE POINTER.
The legend still lives on as he got kicked for an unknown reason🤔.3 -

I just had to give my self a written copyright permission to publish an android app for related to my own website as it was violating googles impersonation policy without it.
And the best part about all this, is it took google 3 days to respond to my initial complaint just to find out the reason why they suspended my app and than another 2 days to resolve it all, after I provided all the "legal" documents1 -
I don't know how i should feel about this....
Honestly only reason i am on FB is bcd i need to use Messenger....13 -
Someone at work asking me about whether the controller system for our door security can access the Internet. I'm explaining that the reason they can't access Google on it is that it is on an isolated network for security. They wanted to install some remote desktop software on it that some idiot had recommended.
Then I actually get asked: "If it can't see Google... Maybe can it see Firefox?"

The website of the italian post service is "closed" between 23:45 and 00:15, everyday.
I don't know if something like this happens in other countries...
And do you know when I really need to access it?
ALWAYS IN THESE 30 MINUTES, not the others 1.410 of the day!
P.S.
What do you think, what could be a valid reason to "close" a web service?
I thought about backup, but other services don't have this problem.4 -
I was called in to a meeting this afternoon, and for some strange reason, my boss had all our salaries written on a board, and I guess she had forgot to erase them before I got in. I've been thinking about asking for a raise for a few months now, but after seeing that list, I'm wondering if I should ask for more than I had previously contemplated. Would that be considered unethical?9

I had a teacher that was going to teach us git and scrum. I was exited and started reading about it in my free time. The next lesson I needed to help him setup the git repo's because he doesn't understand how git works. And everytime we asked something about scrum, he said we should google it. But in the end he barely gave me enough point to pass because he said I wasn't motivated enough and was doing my own projects. But the reason I was doing my own projects (code school) was because I finished all of the assigments within a week. And I knew I wasn't going to learn anything from him.2

Everywhere you go, you find these memes where developers are skeptical of their work. Things like "It works. I don't know how. It doesn't work. I don't know how.". Don't you guys think this is a huge problem? And people say that their programming language is the best, because preference. But isn't this happening because our tools suck?
Yes the problems maybe inherently complex but at least we should be able to figure out the logic behind the snipper and reason about it.
Haven't really experienced it, but they say Haskell and the likes are great at this and it must be true because it's backed by mathematical properties and laws, not " experience".
So the rant here is, wish we had better tools in the mainstream that allowed us to enjoy absolute faith in at least what we have written, regardless of the fact that we understood the problem in the domain.11 -

My little pleasure of today.
I asked a question on Stack Overflow.
It was closed with reason: "off-topic" "tip-of-the-iceberg" question.
I followed the link to the explanation of why it was closed.
There was a discussion in metaSO, about closing or not those kind of questions.
It seems somebody "won" the discussion arguing that was the right thing to do....
I DOWNVOTED HIM.
now I feel much better.3 -
Helping a friend who's a brilliant at mechanics and has his own patents, and got this question when downloading on his 10Mbit line:
"This was supposed to be a fast computer, so why is it taking so long to download?"
To explain the reason was surprisingly hard, considering that this is a guy who's been invited to give a lecture about innovation at a top tech university.1 -
Am I the only one who thinks monitors turned to portrait looks dumb and can’t possibly be more useful? The number one reason people give when I ask is that they can fit more code on the screen. I don’t know about you but I don’t have the ability to glance at an entire screen of code in portrait or landscape and understand it immediately.6

When I was 11 or 12 and I found a magazine for kids that for some reason had an HTML tutorial to build a personal site with Microsoft Frontpage. I think it was 2006 back then and for a few weeks I learnt a lot about HTML, managed to create my site and upload it to a free host. I was fascinated. That was my first close up, at least, to something related to programming. From that day, I knew I was going to work with computers. Now I'm a Java dev but I'm still seeking the language for me. Maybe Javascript.

So the development team are being sent very angry emails from a customer.
Reason being that we can't send a release to them because we are waiting for the signing of a document our managment has known about for five months...
While mangement just keeps passing around responsibility and just throws poop. I'm seriously starting to question why middle managers are allowed to exist in a company structure.
I'm two days away from personally calling the CEO then someone gets fired. It's me or one of these middle manager clowns.2 -
Can we talk about something? I can't be the only one...
Code dreams.
What are they? You either sleep poorly, lightly, or not at all and continually repeat nonsensical code that you would otherwise KNOW is wrong when awake, (and it may even be a problem you already solved!) but for some reason your brain just wants you to mull over it over and over again.
I've been free of them for quite some time, but it happened now the past two nights. Drives me fucking nuts.17 -
Meta post about why it's kinda nicer to ask questions here rather than on forums like stack overflow
The main reason you might get better feedback here is because nobody is competing for question answering points. Generally you don't get rewarded much, even if you get a few updoots. And certainly nobody is going through the questions and trying to answer as many as possible to look like the smartest asshole on the forum.
People just kinda chime in if they know the answer, and generally you'll find someone that knows a lot about what they're talking about.
It's much less like people are answering quickly as possible to meet an answering quota and earn badges.16 -
I get angry every fucking time when I see such method signature:
method(int, int, int, string, string, string, string)
Sounds scary, doesn't it?
Nah. That's the reason our IDEs are so complex. So, I change this and put proper data value/struct class instead, just to make this much readable and understandable for everyone.
And, every time there is a fella that asks this utterly stupid question:
What about performance impact?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa fuckyutitititiigig
And. I. Have. To. Run. Performance. Tests.
Because noone understands performance and computers so I have to prove there is nothing to worry about.
I know when I will go somewhere else I will have to again prove some fuckwit that web applications are so complex already, so adding a new data structure doesn't impact its performance.12 -
I just woke up from a nap. This may seem weird but I had a dream about organizing a devRant meetup at my location. dfox was in town for some reason it involved alot of beer.7

1. Explain yourself in complete sentences.
2. Read the email you just wrote.

4. Go about your day and leave me alone.
Fucking emails like this, I can't even:
Customer Person A: Hey this thing doesn't work when I change X!

Customer Person A: No, Customer Person B is responding to the wrong ticket.

I'm convinced this is going to be wildly unpopular, but hey...
Please stop writing stuff in C! Aside from a few niche areas (performance-critical, embedded, legacy etc. workloads) there's really no reason to other than some fumbled reason about "having full control over the hardware" and "not trusting these modern frameworks." I get it, it's what we all grew up with being the de-facto standard, but times have moved on, and the number of massive memory leaks & security holes that keep coming to light in *popular*, well-tested software is a great reason why you shouldn't think you're smart enough to avoid all those issues by taking full control yourself.
Especially, if like most C developers I've come across, you also shun things like unit tests as "something the QA department should worry about" 😬12 -
F*CK...that feeling when you were working as a junior UI/UX designer for about 3 weeks in new company, you were on a project which is almost finished and delivered...
1 and half week Later (after technical issues - check my older rants)......
you have noticed one quite importat mistake in the designs, which were done by senior designers, which can lead in future to a huge Ux problems - so huge, that users will probably leave/close the app and will not purchase the product via that app... ( We can say than whole design solution was a waste of money for the client)... On that designes was working a team of 4 people, about 3 Months (and the app (prototype) had to be ready already 2 Months back)...
the deadline was pushed 2x already...
And your boss (senior designer) tell you that this is not such an issue.. But thx for your opinion.....
1 week Later by user testing 4 out of 4 people were asking about that stuff I told to my boss that is missing...
And I was ignored...
In less than 1 week Later after the testing I get fired from the company without no reason...
Or better - the reason was:
I have too little experiences for this job...
Dont know if I should laugh or cry🤦♀️🤣/😭8 -
WINDOWS!!! Why, just why would you think that choosing frigging "Enter" as the copy key in cmd was a good idea?!?
At least for pasting, Ctrl+Shift+V works, it just jumps through some menus first, for whatever reason. But Ctrl+Shift+C doesn't work.
In general, after using a Linux console a lot recently, everything about the Windows console seems stupid to me.11 -
Rails gems are like heroine. Addicting as fuck and dangerous when you stop using them.

Too easy you say?
What if I told you that this code was written by a well paid dev over an exceptionally large period of time?
Crazy huh, but that's still nothing. The most ludicrous thing about it - is that you (like me) probably suffer from a mild case of impostor syndrome.
I just ended that suffering. The only thing worse than impostor syndrome is believing you actually know what the fuck your doing. Keep it in check but learn to love it... it's probably the reason you could spot the bug after all.4 -
Got my first rejection after my first job interview via e-Mail today. It was about a local webhosting company.
I feel a little bit sad about it, but I am glad that I have made this experience with them and hope that I can use this experience to better myself in future job interviews.
What bothers me the most is that they told me in the mail that they are sad to send that rejection mail to a friendly and warm person like me, but they do not give a clean explanation why they had to reject me.
Was it because of someone better than me? Am I not qualified enough? What is the reason ffs?
I have send them a mail back mentioning that I am thankful for the conversation we have had, but also asking for the reason of the rejection.
I do not think that they will reply me back, but I hope they will.5 -
The only reason I ever switched to windows 10 was because I only use it for gaming and because DX12 would only get support for win10.
Then I realized: DX12 has been out for almost 3 years and there's only about 30 games that support it. There's only a handful of games that require it (which are of course Microsoft games I'm never going to play). I did some research and apparently most games even perform worse when running in DX12 mode.
I have been using win10 against my will this whole time now... 🤦🏼♂️1 -
I lost my phone a year ago and for some reason forgot about devrant, yesterday suddenly remembered about it. Glad to be back ;)5

!sure if rant
i think i just realized the main reason i hate programming even though i love programming.
i love being able to think about whatever i want to think whenever i want to think.
but programming jobs inherently and many segments of own hobby projects often require me to think about something specific which someone else requires me to think about...
does that make any sense?1 -
A lot of PM-rants (for good reason) but how about a reversed one:
Lead Dev: "Yes, but do we really need a dev and staging server? Can't we just try it out and see if it works?"2 -
I hate Microsoft for not making Office run on Linux. It's the only reason I have to use a fucking MacBook instead of a Linux laptop. No Microsoft, I'm not going to run windows on my laptop. The system ist too much different to my production systems.
I hate Microsoft for not thinking about the consequences of not providing a Linux version. I have to use the fucking Apple Finder in my daily job. I have to buy a thousand dongles to connect anything to my laptop.8 -
so after several hours of irritated detective work, I've finally found out what is the thing that periodically, every about 10-15 seconds, starts two PowerShell processes which run for about a second or two and during that time take about 20% of my CPU capacity...
They're being launched from a commandline, to do GetPackages with name of OmenLightStudio, and the result is then piped into find.exe to find InstallLocation part.
...for whatever reason.
and this is done every 10 seconds by... *drumroll*
HP SYSTEM OPTIMIZER.
GOD. FUCKING. DAMMIT. YOU. MORONS.
...now only to find how the fuck do I uninstall that, since it's some plugin-ish kind of stuff for Omen Studio, and I can't find uninstall for it anywhere in the system nor Omen Studio itself...10 -
Lately submitted an app to the App Store, it was reviewed by Apple, everything fine, I released it.
Last week I submitted an update containing some minor fixes - rejected?!
Checked the reason: Apple has a problem with the app icon (which did not change at all) showing a stylized iPhone.
Right now I'm thinking about solving this by adding a Samsung logo to the icon though..3 -
Situation : Most of my company's clients speak French, and I prefer a Qwerty keyboard for coding.
And to write proper french, I have to switch to an FR keyboard to type é, à, è...etc.
But, for some reason, I usually forget to switch back to English. Oops ! , for some reason, our fellow french chose to put change Z and W places on the keyboard.
And I end up 'ctrl+W'ing (close) , while in fact I wanted to 'ctrl+Z'ing (undo) .
I did some changes to test my code, and after I accidently closed the whole shit, it turned out that I can't undo it anymore.
Thank you french engineers for this unpleasant headache.
I wonder what they were thinking about when they switched Z and W places ?13 -
I remember someone requested features regarding image loading and gifs.
I don't if that's the reason but I opiniated about limited data plans as a concern.
There you go, it's nice to see @dfox and @trogus really care about their users 😆3 -
Well, a question and then a statement.
Interviewer: ”What would you say about [salary here]?”
Me, completely incapable of bargaining: ”Well, maybe I would like it a bit higher...?”.
Interviewer: ”Policy states we start at [same salary]”
Me, still incapable. ”Alright then! I’ll take the job!”
Later same day when turning down the other jobs I was simultaneously in the process of aquiring.
Contact from other firm: ”Sorry to hear that. I hope the reason wasn’t salary, because we could have solved that.”
Me: *Sigh*
Well, the reason wasn’t the money, but maybe the reason for choosing the other job COULD have been money. Oh well...1 -
Over the last year, I’ve only started learning computer science at uni, never done it before.
I’ve done units in:
- Alg. and programming fundamentals in python
- Intro to comp sci
- alg. and data structures
- theory of computation
Guess the point of this is, “why do people code, what aspirations do you all have?”
Cause rn, I’m all about “I have no idea what I’m doing, coding just seemed cool and I wanted to try it out.” Don’t know where to go
Someone inspire me???
Here is a legit reason for you to brag about what you do and what you’re going to do 😉13 -
The backend people at my old company had 4 files which they all committed code to (they were about 10 people). The only reason they didn't use a single file, according to the lead developer, was that Eclipse could only handle 12k lines per file (or something like that).3

You can get mad about Apple releasing stuff that Android has been doing for 10 years. But also get mad about you not being able to pick up and Android phone that is not a buggy mess. I will pick Apples pretentious products over wanting to throw my phone on the floor at least 5 times a day because swiping doesn't work the first 10 times or because I have to select an input field 6 thousand times for it to highlight or because every action has a delay for no apparent reason.
Yes Apple sucks but truth is Android sucks hell of a lot more. Sorry not sorry.31 -
"Why would you make your own when you can just get one for like $30 online?"
One of the single most disheartening things I've heard from a peer.
Seriously, are you really so incompetent and dependent upon other people's work that you can't even come up with a single reason why I would do this?! Don't you dare try to call yourself an engineer. Call yourself a cheat, cause that's the only way you passed that class.
Even after explaining that making it yourself is one of the best ways to learn about/understand it, they still couldn't understand.3 -
I honestly do not understand why people speak so badly about PHP(that's the general vibe I am getting from all these different platforms) or maybe it's because I am still new at it I am yet to find out the reason.27

Just when I was about to watch the Downton Abbey clips on YouTube I realize that my Firefox went completely silent without warning.
So the latest Firefox 52.0 decided to drop ALSA and force users to use pulseaudio instead. Otherwise the only way is to recompile the source with the alsa option enabled, or downgrade.
What the actual fuck Mozilla? Who made this decision? What's the reason behind? So far Firefox is the only browser that is having the sound problem.
Nope. not another bloated package. Maybe I should switch over to Chrome.4 -
Tl;dr;
Yet another reason, why I love the Internet and it's ability to remove remove borders that should not exist in the first place.
Around seven hours ago, I met a stranger while playing rocket league. Just now I said goodbye to a friend, with whom I talked about our lives, our opinions on certain matters and our cultures.
Just within seven hour I made a friend with whom I could talk honestly about things I could probably not even talk about with my parents.2 -
Another reason to love and support Open-source, is that you can be vocal about what you believe in, what you stand for, and what you support.
All without the fear of anyone or any criticism.27 -
The whois service for the legacy top-level domain for Germany (.de) is one of the most fucked up things on the internet.
For years now they've restricted the whois service to notice you about their website information service (https://denic.de/en, you run a search and get information about the domain) which already cost you an unnecessary amount of time if you simply want to lookup something.
A while back they changed it so that you need to state whether you want to look it up fotr informative purposes or business purposes, then they changed it so that you need to supply a reason in a text box.
The new (GDPR) way is that you only get the connectivity status ("connect", "free") via whois and the nameservers on the website (without supplying a reason, which actually is an improvement). Everything this either is for executive authorities or the domain owner (by entering their mail address or zip code).
Germany - the land of "We can opt out of any standard because we can and since theaws changed we can also behave like dickbutts".
Adding the GDPR now only fed the trolls even more.7 -
Today I learned that docker makes all ports publicly available by default on Ubuntu servers using UFW.
Why? Because for some reason docker bypasses the UFW and has done so since 2014.
Thinking about this, I'm a bit irritated to say the least. Infuriated about such reckless behavior would be another reaction.
Anyhow, in case you have docker running on some forgotten Ubuntu server without a dedicated FW/VPN see https://github.com/chaifeng/... for more details.11 -
What was wrong with the major updates and clean modern UI? It was the only reason that made us happy.
Now buggy and not surprising minor updates, doesn't really support touch like 8.1, poor animations, poor etc. that looks like a quick without-love development to just "release quickly".
Anyways, who else liked the modern metro UI in 8.1 and sad about going back to traditional desktop on win10?48 -
I have been working 100 hours per week for the last 4 years. I had to deal with many stress issues, eyes, pain and headaches.
But nothing has scared me like my college life. For some reason, I still get nightmares about the viva exams.
What's wrong with me?3 -
Had my first interview for a cyber security gig.
1st round, preliminary questions about ethics in a security related topic, etc.
I wrote a report about that topic, but for some reason brain fogged the answer.
At the end of the interview, I also blurted out that I found the interviewer's presentation at a past conference and really liked it.
Pretty sure they now think I'm a creep.
That being said, it's been a few years since I've interviewed, so it feels great to get the dust off, even if I bombed it
Practice makes perfect, right?!2 -
Me yesterday evening:
"Fuck java, fuck JVM, fuck everything about it, shit doesn't work for some reason, no runtime errors, no compiler errors, no syntax errors, nothing, *turns off computer*".
Me today morning(coffee = false), after comparing the documented example code provided by the API with one someone else made, I've noticed that the one provided by the API was messed up and couldn't work.
"Lemme change that one value in the properties...okay here we go"
Shit works out perfectly.
FUCK FALSELY DOCUMENTED CODE

I'm going to try a 'zero-day' strategy for learning c++ (at first I was also a little confused about the term zero-day).
The name zero-day does make sense in that there are zero days of me not doing x
So, for this strategy, I have to program something (doesn't matter how small) in c++ every day for a month. After that I'll do the same for python
Then I can make an educated decision of what programming language I like the most
I want to thank @teganburns for his c++ video about c++, that's the reason why I chose to try c++ first4 -
Rant about how I kept getting in my own way as a kid.
Being a perfectionist to me means that you obsess over the mistakes and ignore the things you did well. So when I did find the mistake in my CV, I got so upset that I spent the day rewriting it, cursing myself for not being thorough and deciding this was the reason I got so many rejections.
5'o'clock came and only then did I realise I had missed every email in my inbox, ignored every interview.
I guess obsession is just self-sabotage in disguise.1 -
I am sitting at Starbucks trying to focus and finish some posts for my side project. The lady at the next table has been loudly 😁talking about her Disney trip in excruciating detail. Do we really have to know she will store her bagel and tuna fish in the hotel room fridge - really!
30 minutes in and she is just getting to the hotel - yikes 😫
No other seats open. I am trapped. Project deliverable delay - reason loud lady.
I was going to do this as a speech to text post but too nice to do that. HELP!2 -
We need more positivity:
Reason why you like coding? / Reason why you chose it as your career? / Why wouldn't you want to do something different?

Why apple is a peice of shit..? Why even people love it.. It makes apple to grow more.. Although they don't deserve it.. They don't deserve the trillion dollars.. Why don't they fuck them self..
In a year they release a peice of shit and people are like applauding on it.
Are you fucking serious people?
The people who called as "apple fanboy" please go fuck yourself.. Tell me one reason to love apple..
I am not talking about the price issue. I am talking about they think that they are the best.. But no they are not. They are a bunch of asshole who are working to make money.. They don't need to respect.26 -
Fucking hell. When you go to bed sorta early, but can't stop thinking about your latest project for some fucking reason. So you wake up hours later STILL thinking about it, thus you aren't even sure if you slept at all. Doesn't feel like it. What the fuck? Programming, are you my goddamn love interest or what? I've always been kinda lazy about backups and such, thinking it wouldn't be so bad, and "I have my most important stuff on Dropbox".
Just now, for some reason one of my hard drives just stopped for a bit, and I couldn't do anything with it anymore. Luckily it went away after restarting my pc, but it scared the shit out of me, as I almost lost 500 gigs worth of music, films, documents, etc...
This made me really think about the whole backup thing, and I'm creating a disk image as I type this. The time that I spend on that will be much less then the time it'll cost to recover everything. Lesson learned ^^'3 -
I just spent weeks working on a device driver on linux for a project I'm working on for uni, and for whatever reason, I only thought to cat the device I'm trying to read now. It turns out the output is already exactly what I want and I just wasted a monumental amount of time for nothing. I'm about to start screaming over how stupid I am2

Ublock orgin the improved version of adblock, access less RAM and filters better than adblock.
Reason I'm posting this, is that I saw a post about adblock and how some people really don't like it anymore as it doesn't block all of the ads like it used to.
Just hoping to save some people from malicious popups/annoying ads.2 -
(most of the) Medium authors all suck fucking dick. Those fuckers are the reason the internet needs an IQ lock.
Stats about React vs Angular vs Vue.
Yeah of course let's compare search count of React vs Vue vs Angular but Vue must be searched with ".js" appended. NOT A SINGLE FUCK ADDS .JS WHEN SEARCHING FOR VUE.

First "rant"...
There's a lot of complaints about Windows 10 and it's updates and everyone bashing them.
Does nobody turn off their computer at night?
It installs my updates during the night for me and it even wakes up if needed to do so. I have never looked at my update screen when rebooting or turning my computer on, ever since I have Windows 10 freshly installed... Only exception is the Anniversary Update. So I don't see a reason why everyone hates it so much...
Am I just that lucky or what?11 -
Dunno who it was, but not cool posting a rant about how Windows doesn't allow creating extension-only files like ".htaccess" through Explorer and then deleting the whole thing right after I give him answer that it's possible if you simply name it ".htaccess."
These kind of people are exact reason why whole communities and sites like Stackoverflow turned into judgemental bastards..2 -

Slogging through half baked code, I wondered to myself... Who the fuck is Robert and where is he?
Quickly searching through Google and finding a handful of results I see that he had left long ago. Probably leaving for good reason. I'll never be able to ask him though. Never will I know why he left. He probably has a very sensible reason, but goddamn do I wish he left something that I could use to discern what he has created.
There is no documentation, no reasonable information about why anything was built the way it was, only just mountains of rusty ass baren code to scale down.5 -

I had semi-jokingly changed my username from dextel2 to nothappy, because of that one bad day.
But, it is now when I realized that I am actually NOT HAPPY, things are lately rough, I am constantly scared for no reason, I doubt my skills, I doubt myself for no reason, and top of that there's always a chance for another epileptic attack.
I tried and keep trying to distract myself from negative thoughts but the more I try the more I fail, I've become distant with my younger brother, for the record I'm very overprotective about him. I don't even know if he feels the same, as this year ends or every day passes by I feel changed from my past self (not in a good way).
Switched my first job to get another good job, turns out they don't even have any projects and I'm just a guy they are showcasing like they have ONE amateur developer and we are looking for an entire project and it did work for one client which I'm gonna deny personally because the client is not clear about the project itself, I do not care about the consequences, my heart lies in academics and I'll put my 100% in academics, shall I'm kicked.
A lot has happened in this year, but this one is/was unique and very hard to process. I've always been joyful, sarcastic, funny, you name it, but all of it has just vanished, don't know why. I'm also becoming distant from my ONLY 3 friends and parents.8 -
Question: is it a red flag if I'm "not supposed to" blog about tips and tricks I've found at work (not even code level, just organization and general design patterns)? Reason given to me: "we need to be careful about due diligence and intellectual property for our investors to be satisfied". Am I working with idiots?9

Ever heard of this custom ROM called Unleash-OS ?
Well if you've not, you're doing really well in your life. If you're happy, you can scroll away right now.
And in case you want to test strength of your happiness.
Just see here :
https://github.com/Unleash-OS/...
If you still are happy, you're pretty damn happy person. If you're not well I'm sorry, it'll just take you 10 minutes to recover.
The reason why I ranted about this is that I want everyone to be sane and NEVER do some shit like this.
Peace !1 -
Most ridiculous reason you have been sacked...go!
Had a 1:1 about performance, said i was not performing well, showed them proof, they took the proof and sacked me anyway.
The real reason because the fuck headed lead dev stepped over the line for the last time and i laid into him pretty hard.1 -
The joys of working remotely: you're on the toilet, happily dumping, with your phone in your hand. Suddenly you receive a message from your manager who wants to chat about something urgent.

No raise. Not like I single handedly rewrote one of our weirdest and most complex legacy code bases or anything... Oh and even so they whined about how long that took that's probably reason they'll cite if I ask about this lack of raise thing.

I can't believe how a voice in my head is telling me to end my WFH and start going to the office.
Like, when we talk about promotions, surely my boss will give promotions to those people who are physically there, giving the boss a sense of dedication towards the job.
I know the workload isn't going to change, because work is work regardless whether you're home or not.
Also, my WFH job has gotten quite monotonous. It's a little too comfortable, if that makes sense. Another reason to seek a change.
I don't know, Am I just overthinking this?14 -
Not really a rant but more of a fact kinda thing. Noticed a post earlier about someone ranting about why they code figured I'd do the same...
I code not because I wanted to for say but because my after my uncle's death I needed something that I could feel in complete control of. Coding gave me that ability to control the computer however I want and tell it to do whatever however. At the same time it taught me so much more about myself and the people around me in the process. Today I don't code because I need to control something m today I do it because I can't live with out. It forces me to think critically of everything and everyone. It forces me to learn something new everyday and every night. It requires me to solve complex problems with limited solutions. It allows me to create solutions when everything else has failed and it gives me a drive to complete things. It's the reason I live technology and it's the reason I have the job I do. It's the reason my boss loves my work and it's the reason other people on my team envy me. Code transformed my life into what it is today. And it will forever be my greatest peice of education.1 -

Today I had an, argument with my C# teacher because he believes that reference types are passed by value
I posted a link on Facebook to MSDNs page about it, but somehow some guy in my class still argued for it being pass by value. The reason he says so is because the value is the reference, even though it's quite literally a reference.
It's a reference to a variable rather than, a value.

I love IRC. It seems more fun than forums. You get to talk about programming without people hating you for whatever reason. (Unless you do crazy colors with blinking letters.)1

Ever have one of those moments where you're running a service you built to update about a decade worth of police records, realize about halfway through that you fucked the loop and you're copying data from the first record onto every other record, and then just really wish that you had checked things better in test before running this on the prod server?
I'm sure the only reason I'm still here is because the audit log contained the original values and I'm good at pulling data out of it.1 -
Servey Question.
How many you programmers have a working knowledge of how compilers work? The philosophy and mathematics behind them. Different stages. The choices one might have to make at different stages. Reasoning about the said choices. Difference between different paradigms -- philosophically and implementation wise. The tools one might use.
Reason behind I'm asking this is that I got into a debate with a friend where he said 9/10 of people whom we call "developers" have little to no idea how compilers work.12 -
MySQL 5.5 end of life’d in 2010. In 2021 my company started an upgrade to 5.6. The outdated dependencies meant we needed 25 engineers for 2 months full-time to make the upgrade as invisible to users as possible. We still took about 90 minutes of downtime on cutover day. Not upgrading MySQL on time meant we paid way more in terms of engineering hours. The reason we call it debt, is because you pay interest when you don’t tKe care of it right away.4

I think the reason most people hate frontend these days can be summed up by the fact that the frontend of my fairly simple React webapp is about 850 loc while the entire Express and MongoDB server is a mere 234 loc
God damn frontend is a lot of work these days6 -
Do you get informed about the reasons behind business decisions in your job?
That wasn't the case in my last job and I dreaded my code for that reason.
I think this kind of lack of information can lead to bad engineering decisions and unstructured code. Also, this doesn't lead to the needed ownership of your work.
What do you think?3 -
So my friend works in this big MNC company with good pay. He has had good education and certifications. He runs into a simple issue with someone's github project he forked and calls me for me help to debug the issue. Just helped him figure out the reason for issue over the phone.
And here I am technically "jobless" and loser in my relatives eyes because I'm pursuing self employment with no cool certifications to brag about.
Not sure if I should feel stupid for the choices I made in my life.2 -
I keep hearing about manual repetitive work that could be automated with software but for no specific reason, is not. For years I've been calling this "meatware" and yes in these cases you the developer is the meat3

I have good news!
Finally, my PC is back alive :'D
I took it to where I first bought it, and...
Apparently the reason why it broke was the AC adapter, as they replaced it with a new one... (the PC was still in warranty)
So now I can finally begin to program again and (hopefully) tell you some dev-related rants! So I can actually feel an active part of this community, haha ♡4 -
I just had a thought while thinking about Algorithms and data structures. Honestly other than for technical interviews I have never really had to use specific implementations.
Then I suddenly had a thought... What if I wanted to build my own operating system... I would also learn c++ as well....
I can't think of a reason to build my own OS though... Hm.. What about a programming language? Would that be like a mini-OS, and also need all this stuff?2 -
Not joining the weekly rant.
But had a haunted dream last night and it was definitely weird.
Dreamed that I was at my childhood house and opened the door of my room. Found literally nothing. Just empty room. Got scared (for whatever reason) and run to my mom. Came back to the room with her. Opened the door. Everything was in it's place; bed, chair, table etc.
I didn't watch any scary movie for the past few months. There was one scary dream few months/weeks ago and I wrote about it. And now this. 🤔1 -
PM:"I don't care how you dev build it, those are tech details, not my business, I only care about the business domain."

Why do you root your phone?
My original reason was to enable things my restrictive carrier prohibited, like tethering. But now that carrier is years behind me. On my previous phone, I rooted to disable onerous pre-installed software. On my current phone, I see no reason to root it at all, except maybe to try out some roms.
How about you?11 -
I switched my job a few months ago.
And now instead of having daily rants in our team lead's channel on slack on how I wish to inflict physical harm on one of my interns (and I'm talking interns that would just interrupt a daily to make their breakfast), and having something to bitch about because our method of version control was using the IDE's history.
And that I came on here to make another post about the times that I brought up that we should address our technical debt, and only being met with "we don't have technical debt" by our CTO.
I now have a good dev environment, with also a lot more trust given to the employees, where I actually don't have much to complain, and 0 reason to really post rants about my work here :D
(and the previous company I worked at got sold and merged with another, so I jumped that ship in time :P) -
I was ranting about overusing classes on python, then I noticed I'm a person that creates new functions for 2-3 lines of codes for no reason..3

I was browsing websites in search of a nice digital camera because my wife saw one but it's long since been discontinued. So I found this one article about a few current ones. I open it, it shows the typical GDPR consent request about cookies with a prominent button 'ACCEPT ALL,' and a less prominent button 'MANAGE PREFERENCES.'
But tapping the button 'MANAGE PREFERENCES' did not show any preferences to manage! WHAT THE HECK? There was only a list of 'partners' whose cookies I need to accept. A long list. A very long list. I stopped counting at 500.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? WHAT REASON COULD A WEBSITE POSSIBLY HAVE TO REQUIRE COOKIE CONSENT FOR MORE THAN 500 PARTNERS?

So it's been at least one year since my Lenovo Y520 (bought about 18months ago) has been throttling its i5 at 800Mhz for no reason.
The thing was so fucking slow, you can't even imagine.
A few months back I found why: the fucking processor raised a PROCHOT flag constantly, even though it never exceeded 60°C.
So now, everytime I boot my computer, I have to run a fucking script to reset this fucking flag. Seriously Lenovo, what the fuck? -
Not sure if any of you guys are Windows Insiders (I know the audience here is Linux fanboys and plus, there's not much reason to be an insider in 2021, really), but I am. I'm on build 21286 and for whatever reason... they have decided to SLOW down the animation for opening a new window. I'm too lazy to record it, but the animation is just like it was before: your window scales from like 80% size to 100% size... but it takes legit about half a second now when before I would say it was closer to maybe a tenth of a second.
Strange choice... and I do not think it improves the experience...4 -
Something about my experience in a startup that I co-founded as a developer is that I feel like everyone always depends on me for almost everything. So when I just want to jump in and code, I have to be worried about who's gonna call me for what tedious reason. It really gets to me.
-
Made a game, it was like tetris but you had to connect at least 3 blocks of the same colour.
I worked on it for like a month, about 50h overall, and it was downloaded by 10-11 people all over the world and then removed after like an year or so for no real reason.
I then stopped making games.
I was too depressed by the whole thing3 -
If we were talking - and then all of the sudden, I don’t talk to you anymore... it’s probably because you ignored my advice and chose to go to an especially bad boot camp. Now - that’s fine! But the reason I’m not talking to you is because I just don’t know how to say anything positive about your terrible decision and the terrible school... so - I’m just not saying anything at all.8

Devrant iOS app removed from my region's App Store for some reason. Can use the web app but cannot use iOS app. That is kinda unfair. It was there before. :(
What better place to rant about it than at devrant xD9 -
Avast stoping my benchmark and reporting it to me is like a dog that proudly brings a bone to you while you walk with him on a cemetery.
I know about it before I started the benchmark so i deactivated it for 30min, but then for some reason (i may have accidently clicked on the symbol) the ui opened and everytime it does that it for some reason resets the option so it was active again. Now it deleted parts of the Software and I have a hard time making it run again. Fml and fuck monday. Why isn't there an option to make a fucking exception or remove something from their fucking virus container if it was a false alarm?6 -
My home office, I have my own room for it, when I wanna take a break I can go and make meself some nice coffee. I can also have the TV on playing something for background noise, it helps me more than music for whatever reason. Mainly the office (which according to me I have seen that show about 40 times already)
This is why I really enjoyed the pandemic, but I realize that saying such things sound harsh.
The best fucking part of it? I get to use my own fucking clean restroom. I fucking hate public restrooms or having to share them with strangers because for whatever reason it seems that most people around the world do not have general etiquette when using restrooms.
I have seen some shit that has left me so fucking confused it ain't even funny. Second best part: no fucking commute.5 -
Like I know most like to hate on recruiters, and I guess that’s cause may, maybe even most, are just a pain and don’t really understand development nearly well enough to actually target relevant candidates.
I’ve dealt with a few over the years when looking, this is the first time however one has sent a contract that includes a 3 month default clause.
Not sure about other countries but in mine there is a legal 3 month probation period, which really is there in part to allow either party the ability to terminate the agreement at basically a moments notice.
Maybe I don’t like the company or how they work, maybe I lied my arse off during the interview and copied an assessment off the web, or hek they just don’t like me…
It’s a legal period in which pretty much and any reason is a valid reason.
Yet for this recruiter, no matter the reason, if the employment ends during those 3 month, I would then be liable to pay her 10% of my annual gross.
Like NAF…3 -
Worst: forced to work for 9 months on a shitty wp theme:
- colleague with no clue trying to make me do their work… check
- incompetent manager doing shit about it… check
- idiotic pipeline requiring to redeploy for every asset update… check
- micromanaging cto which for some fucking reason didn’t want to allow access to the writers, forcing the role of content editor on the devs… ducking check! Quack!!
Best: automated lots of processes in my free time, all stuff which I can reuse! -
So, I decided last week to give VIM and Emacs a try, for no other reason than I can.
I found emacs a bit clunky, but VIM is actually starting to grow on me.
Can anyone recommend some good sites where I can learn about configuring vim, nothing major, but setting different indents for different languages would be handy.2 -
I've always found it funny when sql errors "at or near" a character. I don't know enough about sql to understand why it does that (although I'm sure there a reason!)....but it just sounds like it's not trying hard enough 😂
Maybe someone smarter can explain?1 -
Best: i learned a lot this year, cant really highlight anything but i got better at networking stuff, im happy about that
Worst: using xamarin forms probably, it was a literal hellhole and midway through the project microsoft abandoned winphone so there was absolutely no reason to keep using that shit -
I read alot of rants where people describe that they had to implement things they know were wrong and later the boss complained about it although its what he said.
My requirements engineering professor always told us to document everything. Every change made to the requirements must have the source and the reason written down. Idealy with some sort of signature from the boss.
But i understand its not always that easy or done. Which is kinda sad.undefined requirements engineering in reality everything is different best practice wise words documentation -
Reason to hate my D grade engineering college.
1st lecture of web development.
(Syllabus html,css,PHP)
Expectation : at least teacher will introduce fucking web development technologies.
Reality:
Teacher=> look I don't know anything about PHP so learn from web. I will give you internal marks just submit assignment on time.
😅
Btw it is not story.3 -
As software devs we likely know about xkcd comics.
Some are just funny, but some have deep meaning or idea buried inside.
What xkcd comic influenced you the most?
For me it has to be https://xkcd.com/150/
It feels like a spin on the idea to "create your own path", but for some reason I took it very deeply to my heart.5 -
About half an year ago, I literally fought with my DS teacher for half an hour in front of whole class,
REASON:
That dude couldn't saw the infinite while loop on his BINARY SEARCH algo hand written on board...
I mean come on dude, binary search is one of the simplest algo, and he didn't agreed with me until he dry run his written code(PS: the only thing I liked about him...HE KNOWS HOW TO DRY RUN)....
Scariest part: He was supposed to teach us trees and graphs in about a month
And it was my first day in that class -
Everyone ranting about how they express themselves through code.
And here I am on project where I can make almost no decisions myself.
I got into coding for the same reason as everyone else. I'm pretty good, so they put me on this project. Junior guys get all the good stuff, 'cause this project is too important. Ironic, eh?2 -
This is a real history..
So i went to my friend’s party.. and he invited this hot girl.. (u know the girl that would never talk to any programmer)..
so she started asking me about programming, maths, software...
and I was like wtf.. is this real? (because u guys know that this is impossible jaja)
Actually, we spent all night talking about it..
for some reason she started hanging out with me and my friend..
now we are dating.. kind of crazy uh?
(she is an engineer btw)4 -
Little known fact about MS Intune: the reason it's so fucking slow is that when you tell it to deploy an app to a group of machines, a little goblin emerges from his slumber in the basement, copies the app onto a stack of floppies, and gets a taxi to each location to install it.
It's surprisingly hard to hail a taxi when you're a 10-inch tall homunculus carrying a suspiciously large backpack.
The little bastard has only just finished the first device, and it's lunchtime now so that's the last we'll see of him all day. -
For the love of god, why in the world are coworkers so prone to overflow with pointless informations? I don’t care about which db you use when I am a frontend, just tell me the f*cking endpoint to use ffs! Nor I care about the FE framework when I’m working on the be and most of all I don’t care about the reason behind a formula you use to calculate a freaking param, give me the goddamn formula or its name 🙄
Please tell me I’m not the only one getting triggered by coworkers explaining useless things, cause lately it’s so annoying3 -
tl:dr
i fucking hate that professor for whom i have to work on laboratory project right now.
reason#1
the project is using a stack full with java. JavaScript. react and some weird facebook api of which i have no clue about. not to mention the server side of this application which uses tomcat (ok its java after all) and sql.
well that wouldn't be not so bad if...
reason#2
we wouldn't have to fucking debug his mistakes he put into the fucking prepared code AND his fucking useless instructions how to set up the project for eclipse the first time. not to mention his fucking requirements which make no sense
oh yeah im a student. i can always go and ask him for help if i need any...
reason#3
i have another 70% mandatory course at the same time and that fucker refuses to upload hos sheets in moodle and answer even one fucking question via mail. not to mention no support if I am there unless i have eclipse setup. even through the projects should be build using gradle...
reason#4
oh. and have i mentioned that this course is only about design patterns? uts not like we could see several of them in a java only application. no we literally have to learn java itself. gradle. nodejs JavaScript Extended for react which i have no clue about at the moment... and yes i especially mentioned gradle and nodejs beccause we have to set shit up and not only use a script.
reason#5
and all that wont even give us a grade. no ita simply a pass or fail part of the module which the course is part of.
have i also mentioned that the whole shit should be done in 20 hours according to the schedule8 -
Reddit has become unusable. I posted a completely innocuous request there about financial instruments. My post was immediately flagged and unpublished for no specific reason. "Sorry, this post has been removed by the moderators of r/personalfinance.
Moderators remove posts from feeds for a variety of reasons, including keeping communities safe, civil, and true to their purpose." What the hell can you post to Reddit besides shitposts?5 -
Me: I have very perfect reason why I did not come to work to day .
Client: Please state your reason .
Me: its silly I don't wanna talk about it.
Client: please do
Me: my index fingers are hurting
Client: why
Me: what do you mean why I was tying to git push heroku master
But every time some json dependency failed -
A: [technology] really sucks. For example, it does this thing where [shitty thing].
B: So just because [shitty thing], you throw out the entire [technology]?
No you dimwit. It's because of all the other things that led up to this point. This new bullshit is just being tossed on top of the mountain of other bullshit.
I'm not going to list off all 5000 reason why Cobol-interpreter-using-C-preprocessor is absolute garbage when "it's cobol implemented in the C preprocessor" is what I'm ranting about *now*.
Pedantic twats.1 -
DevRant is starting to look more like a shitty fucking combination of Pinterest/Instagram to me.
Everybody's taking memes/pics out of other sites and upload it here, as if we devs don't follow meme sites ourselves.
It adds scrolling length for no reason, but if you say something about it, incels jump in be like "wHy iS tHeRe aN oPtIoN tO uPlOaD tHeN".3 -
Hardware Developing.
My current school project where I build a gps thief lock for my moped had me realized one thing. I don't want to go into Hardware Developing. The first problem took me about 4 months until I finally gave up and solved it differently. And this goes on and on and on. You fixed something and the next day it doesn't work anymore for some reason. I never had this problem when coding. It's fun to do stuff with electronics but coding is just way more rewarding. Anyone else had the same experience?1 -
Okay, so there's one guy in my class, which offends me for no reason (I don't give a f about that), and then few minutes later he comes to me and asks "can you make forum/launcher/website". So I say no, because I'm not gonna waste my time for free... So he offends me even more.
When I was telling "Sure, but that will cost you X PLN (Polish Nominals)" - he laughed.
This is really annoying.7 -
What do you mean you sent a fucking mail about it? Theres a reason we have case systems with case fucking numbers. Its so that we can keep track of different customers, which is crucial for day to day operations. You retarded fucking fuck.
-
I just love it when the debugger integration into the IDE breaks for no good reason.
I also love that the github issue about it was closed for inactivity. Because problems magically disappear if no one screams "same issue here" for long enough.
Fuck you too19 -
I'm getting really astounded by how little my co-workers know about anything about server setups. I've created a local Docker environment that is to be used by everyone to help manage the applications, but NO ONE seems to understand what I made let alone know what Docker is. For some reason they see it as another VM.
They're just content with it works, I can run my PHP application, and if they have a problem, rather than try and find out themselves, they just come straight to me.
I can pretty much tell that this team is going to be screwed when I move onto my next role. -
OK, we all hate Gates, Elon or LTT for some reason. All heroes in my eyes. Ok, I do cringe at some LTT stuff, especially when about Linux.
I've read a book about Gates (Very bad one), about Elon and Jobs. So, I think I investigated well.
But there, a list from people we all hate for some reason. Question is, who's your tech hero?
For me, it's Robert Nystrom. But being a dictator of own project like Torvalds is my dream13 -
Am I the only one who when hearing the term "Artificial Intelligence" thinks about why nobody tries to develop "Real Intelligence" instead?
I mean the term artificial imho points directly at the reason why those systems are actually so damn stupid6 -
Not being allowed to post comments on this page for seemingly no reason is the equivalent of invisible walls in video games. I didn't even receive a fucking error message, I had to go to devtools, only to find "You can't post a link in your comments yet.". What do you mean, my comments? I wanted to suggest DaisyUI to some bloke but I guess, I will just try to find the exit for this level then before I can get to the one 2cm behind this wall, in plain sight and no reason not to give me access to it now and no explanation anywhere (cannot wait to get RTFM comments with a link to some about page).
Greetings, I guess, I was only here to lurk and comment but the page won't let me.4 -
Turns out the reason the selection of RA cores on the PS3 sucks so much dick is that it has a half-complete OpenGL implementation.
Fuck it, we're doing it live. I've got CFW, i'll dynarec if I damn well please. If it won't compile i'll fucking make it compile, I don't give a fuck about "sanity restraints" and "needing OpenGL 2" and "LV1 required" I can fucking replace all of LV1 and LV2 if I fucking want FUCK YOU
The Cell processor is pretty beefy, I could prolly do it all-CPU if I wanted.8 -
almost end of working day... jobless...
me : *running `uptime` on a server*
*for no reason* : runs `uptime --pretty`
interesting output... ( that I have seen so many times on my personal machine because I have `uptime` aliased to `uptime --pretty` )
*thinks to self* : didn't we create that program that computed a similar output? Wonder if the code is similar...
*brain gets excited about the source code of `uptime`*
goes hunting for the source code of `uptime`... finds it... ( wasn't too hard anyway )
now here I am comparing my code with the source code of `uptime`
what a way to end the day... 🤦 FML!1 -
I really hate the term fullstack developer. Just call it what it really is. Javascript react developer who dabbles in node occasionally.
If you don't have some knowledge of tuning a database, tuning your runtime, handling issues with networks and latency in your code, dealing with issues with message queues, writing abstraction layers for the database, etc. you aren't a backend developer, sorry to say.
Being able to reason about a mean stack running on digital ocean doesn't not make you proficient in the backend.3 -

Some on here are very open about having addictions or using external things 'to keep going', be better or whatever else reason. I do too myself. (please don't get butthurt)
What do you think about weed & dev instead of - or even with - alcohol & dev?
BTW, I just noticed this (2 hours ago! I didn't know there are limits, which seems like a good idea..). I deem it obligatory to share. It's also the reason I'm asking 😁10 -

Sometimes when I code I become very happy without a reason. I don't know the source of this joy. It's not about if the code works of not, it's just different.1 -
Been struggling with an issue all weekend (it had to go to client today) with no solution and without understanding why it was returning the wrong values.
Arrive this morning to the office and team leader asks me about the issue and gives me a new one with higher priority, so I decide to pass my issue to a junior I work with.
While doing so and explaining everything he should look into, by some magic powers I found the reason for the issue
Thank the rubber ducking god!!! -

I've heard good things about "Go", I see it more and more in companies' tech stack.
I've gone to its website, and OMFG I CANNOT HANDLE THAT WIDE-EYED BLUE PIECE OF GOO.
the ~ONLY reason (besides my staunch hatred of all things ewgle) I won't ever touch that horrid language is because of that ugly ass mascot.10 -
Orchid syntax highlighting
I gotta say, I really like the text image of my new language ^_^ This is something I was worried about, although that's part of the reason why the entire syntax is defined natively and can be modified on a whim16 -
I'm back from the dead to rant again. This time it's punycode.
My job has to do with processing the commoncrawl web archives, and for some reason one in 20.000.000 archived webpages crashed my program. After some debugging I found this issue that seems to be the reason my code crashes https://github.com/servo/rust-url/...
To summarize the issue: Since punycode unicode characters can be encoded into domain names. But not every character is allowed. Not only do these invalid domains get registered, I need an in-depth knowledge about unicode to understand what is wrong here.
How did we turn domain names into something so complicated?3 -
Don't you just love it when gitlab's ci pipelines crash for no apparent reason, causing tests which cannot fail to just magically break down, change logging levels to Just about anything and basically PMS for about 3 hours before it decides it needs to restart completely and when you return the same pipeline which you've been trying to fix for the better part of an entire evening, after regular work hours, it. Fucking. Works. With. No. Changes. To. The. Entire. FUCKING. System.
Waste of a day.3 -
Coding on a German keyboard suddenly gives you a reason to like those indentation-based languages without curly braces. And what about backticks and single quotes, they're for sure easier to find on an American ASCII keyboard. Fücking ümläüt chäräctersß!
Even worse on a Mac where it's not even printed on the keys what they do when holding shift, alt, or apple/clover/cringle keys.24 -

I just have to vent somewhere about how I'm SO DAMN SICK of the effin' cross-realm BS in World of Warcraft. Nothing breaks immersion like having to stand in line for some mob with 10 min respawn timer. I joined a low-pop server for a reason!!! -
I've been waiting for over a week to get permission to add finished code to a part of our intranet site. My work have been delayed. Had to tell people to wait. Makes me look bad.
I have read access. It's nothing top secret. It's literally about some guy not ticking a checkbox for whatever reason. -
Let me tell you a story about an independent contractor who was just told the reason I don’t have enough information to build, deploy, access, or test the software I was brought on to maintain…
is that the previous developer is holding all documentation essentially “hostage” in an attempt to squeeze more payment out of the client. What the tap-dancing shit have I gotten myself in to.3 -
Never underestimate the power of a misplaced static in your Java to totally fuck you over.
I was busy with my computer science project for the semester where we have to implement a Sudoku solver without backtracking by using graph theory.
So there I was writing my data structure for the grid when for some reason all the cells were initialized with the value 8.
After a whole night of debugging I was about to start over when I realized I had made my array static.
And boom, it works. WTF!!!!!!!3 -
the gross feeling when

this feels worse than hearing about your ex doing well after you broke up, for some reason4 -
The night before I had an oral exam about history of Communication Studies at university, I was too excited about learning PHP (ikr, that was 5 years ago). I mailed the professor an apology and stated the real reason I would skip this exam. When I still showed up at 9 in the morning without having slept, he told me "that's the most honest mail I've ever had" and gave me a 2/20 for showing up. (At the third exam period I studied it properly and got an 18/20)

There is a Facebook group I’m a part of called “ReactJS Expert Community” and I can tell you it’s filled with anything but experts. Someone just posted on it asking what the difference between Axios and async/ await is. The only reason I’m part of this group is so I can feel good about myself when I screw up while coding xP

Hey, know that joke where people say it runs yesterday but for some reason it doesn't run the next day? The same thing happens to me here with Hecker (a Hacker News 'client' written in Go that I am currently working on)... Oh wait a second it works again!
Btw, if you care about this, then the error seems to be a JSON error, which means that one of the submissions the program scrape has wrong JSON format, and its error is an invalid character error. Bruh.2 -
Had a dream about computers on earth mostly stopping working for no apparent reason, yes, again. But this time, they still work on Mars, so we go there, at least some of us. UAC-esque, Doom 3-ish aesthetics, but in a good way, no death and no darkness. No hell plot though, we’re all fine. Both earth and mars are equally semi-livable, but in different ways. For some reason, we can’t ship new CPUs to mars, and 775 pentium considered a good CPU. We use SQL and HDDs. Elon is also there, but he’s nothing, a peasant compared to other scientists and engineers who are a part of the exodus. I had some problems with food and shelter initially, but @netikras helped me2

I hear a lot that doing competitive programming is important to land jobs and that it would improve your ability to solve problems, however; I hate it and I suck at it so much. I don't see improvement except for knowing how to solve a certain problem and I forget about it after some time.
I can't stand doing any kind of abstract, unrealistic problem solving for whatever reason. I love solving real-world problems that actually matter and provide an actual value on the other hand.1 -
You know what really rustles my jimmies, the fact that a lot of people (especially older people) disregard your profession or refuse to talk about because "i dont understand dem computers" so they generally have no idea what you're actually doing and you cannot give an explanation.
Ffs, I don't really understand chemistry but I would still like to know what you do at work/school and maybe even learn sonething. There is no fucking reason for why this also shouldnt apply for IT.5 -
for some reason, the company's hr platform doesn't allow me to log in, unless i use this very obscure url that got sent to my email. wtf is that about3

Joke about Rust all you want, but Rust is the reason efficient programs are on vogue. When you see a web developer optimizing their JavaScript to make a smaller bundle, or a backend developer getting rid of dependencies, thank Rust for that.
I don't like Rust, I don't like their community, I don't like their superiority complex, but their existence is net positive so far.9 -
I went to a job interview about 3 weeks ago. I got an email that I didn't pass, so I asked for a feedback. Their response was that I have required technical skills, but the reason I was not accepted was "your personality is incompatible with our team". I mean, WTF. How can you get my personality after one hour of me talking about code?15

I'm so disappointed about these day developers, they rather make web than native app. Google technologies ? pls. The only reason why they afraid to make app on the windows 10 is losing customer of their crappy Chrome OS, oh not to mention they don't even have the stable SDK for their native solution on the ChromeOS. So they trick developers to make web more than native, PWA, SPA ? why dont you just make a native windows applications ????4
-
I always see people cry about Windows restarting because for some reason they pretend it forcibly restarts. Just started the Windows 10 notebook of my mother. It had the first update if it installed although it is in daily use... So yeah...1

People love to be opinionated.
If for whatever reason you don't like something, you are gonna shout. If it does not affect anything nor improves anything - you gonna shout!
Seems familiar? Yep. Talking about devs. Opinion is everything here and the louder you shout - the better.
Oh... And not forget long discussion for a 30min fix! This is a mast15 -

Two weeks ago this literal statement from client:
I reckon <Your Product> is almost at the point where we can bypass <Competitor Product> altogether, just need <Feature X>
After various much back and forth email, drilling into <Feature X> and asking pointed questions:
At the end of the day because of <Reason Y> I'm going to need <Competitor Product>'s <Feature Z> anyway.
While I appreciate this was necessary, valuable and saved my organisation a great deal of time, it is supremely annoying that it is necessary at all.
95% of of product management seems to be about preventing dolts from being dolts. -
If there's one thing I hate about devs is definitely when they get too emotional about the reviews they receive.
Doing a thorough review always takes significant amount of time and energy. It's about ensuring high quality of code, about functionality and best practices, ... It's also about learning: I learn from the changes being reviewed while at the same time I also try to teach the author as much as possible, giving down to earth opinions.
It's never (or at least should never be) about attacking the author. There really is no reason why someone would spend all this time getting overly personal.
I used to start my responses with (lousy) apologies for being "harsh", but stopped doing this now that my team understands all of this. It also helped asking them to do the same with my changes. The look in their eyes when they find something is simply invaluable :).1 -
Our client supposedly managed our Jira board yesterday in preparation for the release to live.
It was a mess. We have two people on this project - so our effective maximum workload is 10 days worth of tickets.
The current sprint plus the next have over 60 tickets in them, with the other "light" sprints having about 15 days worth in them.
I know you shouldn't get caught up over estimates too much, but they're in place for a reason.
The client really needs a reality check, and to be reasonable. When looking from a macro perspective he loses sight of all reason and scope, trying to grossly overfill what the two of us can handle.
A junior and student placement dev can only do so much.
I guess time will tell how realistic 16th April is.. -
I often hate about SOF because people downvoting for no reason or giving bullshit advice when they don't know shit. I must admit however sometimes it really helps and you can see that there are still competent people around, willing to help and explain.1

Note to anyone who is thinking about using Google Inbox:
Don't use that fucking stupid cuntbag of a tool for important email accounts. Even though it uses POP3 as Google states, it just permanently wiped all 2700 emails from the account via IMAP without any reason just after it was setup, so that even all the locally saved emails on all of our devices connected via IMAP were deleted. Go fuck yourself Google.3 -
Just another day, like any other. i suppose.
stupid people with dual standards utilizing a system which willfully pisses people off in earnest and encourages 'snarky' responses and moderators who are idiots :P
'this has a negative effect on silly people'
well how about me ? I think they should have to justify the reason they downvote so that things can be addressed. and if they don't make sense you can challenge.

Projects are like progress bars, they are really quick at 80-99% and then it takes a while until they have finished. The reason is the same, nobody thought about milestones and goals.1

Sometimes I really don't understand why so many CS students take pride in talking in a highly disrespectful manner about their professors. While it is true that not all professors are upto the mark, but imo that still is no reason to use derogatory language for someone senior to you, which sadly is quite common these days.3

How often does this happen to you?
Just updated our continuous integration and for some reason the BuildAgents, who update independently, just kept failing to update.
Tried every trick in the book, debugged everything.
Kept complaining about being unable to delete files, frigging Windows file system being an idiot as always...
Was about to give up and migrate everything to a fresh system until I realized...
*reboot*
Ah, it works now!
... Why does it always take me so long to realize that's an option!?3 -

Again I get confirmation that my trust issues are justified.
In the end, 99% of people just watch their own ass even if they could easily make it easier for others who didn’t do anything wrong. All they’d have to do is caring about them.
I guess especially younger generations only care for their parents, wives and kids. Everyone else is just a means to an end.
It reminds me of the reason why I spend most of my time alone at home in front of my computer.8 -
I dunno if this is a rant or an anti-rant, but for some reason, Assembly and low-level development hardly ever tick me off. It absolutely dumbfounds me how what many regard as the most frustrating and difficult ways of programming a binary digital computers is just so enjoyable. I spend hours per day teaching myself C and GNU Assembly and how it works with little actually getting done. It just rarely gets frustrating enough to rant about. Ladies and gentlemen I think I have found my calling!

So i got another reason to hate windows.
During decrypting bitlocked external hard drive it got disconnected and guess what the partitions didn't showed up in windows and everytime i connected hard drive windows get stuck. I thought the drive and all data of about 300gb is gone. None of the softwares worked (Also tried diskpart to list disks but it got stuck too). After about a week i live booted linux distro and guess what hard drive is working perfectly in linux.
And decryption was also successful without interruption.
Linux never disappoints.2 -
i forgot to take my fucking meds and for some reason i was very calm today as if i did take them. broken in more pieces than all of the grain of sand combined on this planet. hope to God it permanently stays this way. the way how i gave no fucks about problems and cold blooded emotionless fucking prick non attached to anyone cause everyone is a piecr of fucking trash5

Its funny whenever i see an apple fanboy use the note 7 as a reason to switch. A few iPhones in the past exploded too.
No hate to apple users in general, im talking about the hardcore fans.3 -
Aaaaand another rejection. Without a reason. And only after i asked about the status. I guess if i didnt ask, i wasnt told in the first place. Bastards. Meanwhile i’m kinda broke now. There goes my savings!4

I understand the desire people have to use an open source driver for their graphics card, but it feels like that's not the only reason people seem averse to using nvidia's closed-source driver on linux. I have used it for years, and never had a problem, and though I have an admittedly specific use scope, I would like to know what it is that people dislike about it. What problems do you have with it?3

Talent Acquisition for a company I previously turned down reached out to me again. Bragging about their business acquisitions and head count increase. Lol that means nothing to me unless you significantly improved your pretty shitty PTO policy, which is why I turned them down in the first place and explicitly told them that was the reason.
I guess they think I’m desperate because I haven’t updated my LinkedIn, so it looks like I’ve been unemployed for a year. Nope, not unemployed. Just don’t want my enemies to find me at new job.
I ranted about that place here: https://devrant.com/rants/4832237/...2 -
I love that moment in the company when my opinion does not matter about but the time gives the reason to the crazy tech guy that nobody listen in first place4

Currently trying to make a multi boot machine, with a lot of linux distros inside, like debian, fedora, gentoo and arch.
I know I will have to format everything a lot of time, because of stupid mistakes, I want to try to put /home in common, and play with some more SSD, and to put a preempt_rt patched kernel somewhere.
I am starting from debian,
Format counter: 3
Reason 0: because i need to install at least once...
Reason 1: I am stupid
Reason 2: I disconnected the SSD,to connect a disk with windows. Now bootloader doesn't find any os in the SSD anymore... still no clue, and in case of doubt: give windows the fault 😠😠😠
DAMN YOU WINDOWS, how did you find that I want to use debian? What did you do to break it?? (Despite it wasn't even connected?!?)
I have checked everything about secure boot, and I am sure it is disabled...
And every search online gives results about dual boot, but it is not my case... :/ -
It’s 2am. This is what I think about: a baby head but it’s a cheaply made plastic toy toilet that is somehow narrow like a pez dispenser, I put some green plastic stuff in its “mouth” and close it and I’m like oh no why I did this he’s gonna swallow it and there’s kanye in the background screaming grand theft auto grand theft auto we’re in a game we’re in a game
I’m scared. I can’t sleep. My heart goes like 180bpm for no reason7 -
spent 3 days at internship looking for a bug that's stopping the program from running correctly all the way though
5 minuets before i have to leave I change a single value up 1 increment just because I've had it with the program and for some reason works perfectly just how I want it to SOME GOD DAMN REASON I DON"T KNOW YET
Today is just about me going through some reading for the next step and trying to figure out why the hell that worked1 -
Let's talk about borrowing/lending money.
Will you lend money if a friend or family asks?
At the moment, it's an immense hassle to get back the money I'm owed. I don't mind at all but the idea of losing money down the drain for no reason is idiosyncratic.16 -
PISSED.
Fucking Docker, for no fucking reason (no updates, no changes, etc), I tried booting it up following the morning ritual, and nope, ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE when connecting to my current project (means I managed to connect but for some reason no data is sent). Nginx container doesn't yell about anything.
Everything around works. Accessing the container works. Even pinging my dev domain works. Why the fuck suddenly fucking Docker just **stops**?!
Restarted Hyper-V, updated laradock, recreated containers, disabled AcrylicDNS. NOPE.
"Fuck you Phlisg, I'm not in the mood today" <lunatic Docker is lunatic>

Question...
Bout a month back went for an interview, went well, assessment and all that, but the company was busy moving so feedback was slow.
Last week got contacted by a client of a former company who is now also looking for a dev.
Company 1 just came back wanting to discuss offer, and company 2 will probably get back to me tomorrow.
Question is, there like any reason to disclose the info to them. The second guy I know, he was client for about a year.1 -
Co-workers conversation about the new Google Pixel... "I won't get it because they steal your soul, same reason why I don't have the iPhone with the finger print.. they want to have all your information... blah blah..."
I laugh, because they device doesn't matter... your info gets stolen in transit... so all your snap chat, IG DMs, and all of communication potentially at risk to be "stolen".
Example, Gov't splicing into underwater fiber optic cables and redirecting traffic to a data center...
Understand the tech.. please.2 -
It is better to write almost all of the logic used in the code as comments/documentation.
Trust me.
It is a good thing. It increases Code readability.
Nobody is going to copy your logic and get hired in a high paying job or get promoted for that reason. People will come to know about your wit and will appreciate you instead.2 -
For some reason when creating my account i wrote PetarPeychev as username but got Petarpeychev somehow. Then I tried changing the capitalization but it didn't work cuz apparently the name is already taken (by myself?). So I thought about doing the ole' c=a; a=b; b=c; and now I know about the 6 month restriction...

Folks are bragging about having 99 microservices. I don't know for what joy folks create that much microservices. They may have their own reason. I'm trying to understand what is the workflow for small companies with few microservices. Could anyone shed some light? I'm thinking of building orchestrator where I don't have fancy features like k8s and get the basic job done. Focused more on simplicity and UX.4

I don’t know about you but I use backticks for every string in js. I want to know that I can always use quotes and apostrophes and backticks ensure this. Also they allow templates and Babel got me covered when it comes to old browsers.
I don’t see the reason why should I use something but backticks in 2020

Since the last rant is talking about brains, I feel like this summer heat is frying my brain. It's been some of the weirdest days for me these last couple of days. I cannot focus on anything. Cannot make sane decisions or conclusions. I'm more depressed/sad. More disorganized. I don't want to eat anything. I'm sky-high anxious. I'm more shy than ever in public. I have no reason for that but I don't what's happening.3

Ok I don't know what ticks managers off about working from home.
I live an hour away from the office and my team (i.e. The whole company) consists of 3 people, INCLUDING ME. And we all work on different projects. So what's the point of even going to the small room with cubicles AKA the office? No, there aren't really any "learning from my colleagues" crap; we work on different stacks. Plus we're all juniors. Oh yeah, haven't I mentioned that? WE HAVE NO TEAM LEAD OR EVEN SENIORS. The CEO has a tech background and he communicates with us directly and discuss the requirements etc. BUT HE LIVES IN ANOTHER FUCKING CONTINENT. So, again, what's so bad about working from home in my case? My manager doesn't like it for some reason. -
The people who run these scheduling meetings need to remember that this building is just one big tinder box ready to go up in smoke. 30+ minutes talking about bull shit that only affects a small percentage of the team. AND we're behind and dealing with a push that happened on a Friday before the guy who wrote the code left for vacation to go to Tennessee to watch the eclipse for some reason.

I have an app idea, I need people here to tell me if this make sense.
In short I want to creat an app that supports forums and chat rooms but only for people close to you.
The reason being that whenever I move to a new place, I basically have no knowledge of what’s going on around me what so ever, so if there’s a forum that I ca easily navigate and see what people are talking about it will be great. There are certain buildings/managements that has their own app but doesn’t seem to be used at all, I think one reason being that it’s a new app for new neighborhood, and the range is too small, I’d rather see what people do around me but not within one single building
And the reason for chat room is because if I’m going some place for an event, first if there’s this forum it will be great because people can just post questions there, second if there’s any session then it really makes sense to have some time and location limited chat room for me to join, and I don’t have to worry about it once I’m out of that location or time has expired. Recently I was in a conference and people are straight up creating messenger groups.
I think it makes sense to combine the two, you have a forum where you post things that your neighbor may have answer to, and if you want to creat an event, you can create a chat room just for the event, which expires after certain time.
I need to know if this idea sounds plausible. Devrant do your best, thanks10 -
Someone posted here something about Macbook’s touch being too cold and being the reason of their cold.
Just came here to say: I second that opinion. It does get too cold at times. Sends a chilly wave through the body on first touch.

- looking for a specific device in a single e-shop
- browse the listings of available SKUs
- find the one I want, buy it
And after I buy it, for some reason ad services think I need another one (or perhaps several other ones) from the same shop, as they keep showing me ads with the part I've purchased. And this goes on for weeks...
Talk about AI and clever advertising algorithms........5 -
In Malaysia where majority are short-sighted employers located, I am more comfortable with Backend Development with the reason that customer (as they dont know how that think work in the first place) so can't force me to change the feautre , unlike frontend, it is easy to complain about the UI/UX ... I learn all the complex topics just for fufilling the need of making this or that button rounder.

This is me making concessions when a library I really want to try (Dear ImGUI)is written in C++…

I went to do the "transport-tracker" Google Codelabs that uses JS/Firebase/Maps, and I didn't pick up on how really outdated it was lol... it took me about an hour of ehat seemed like an endless climb out of a shit factory....but I passed my NPM "massive errors" trial by fire with flying colors, got everything working mint, and managed to get most of everything (minus the docs) updated/cleaned up. Holy fuck that was crazy, it's amazing how many things change in such little time!!!
Anyways, the main reason I'm here is.... should I push the used-to-be-old-and-fucked-up codelabs I fixed up and made current to Google?? They are pretty important concepts that cover a lot of ground, so I feel like labs/tutorials should be refreshed by up and comers every so often but I don't know if there's a reason why we leave em to just rot and die haha -
so I'm the new guy now, my new team write complicated, deep-for-no-reason IFs instead of a switch, gave me a shitload of resources to get up to date with their standards, insisted to every time make sure my code has been tested, then the first deployment I see THEM do breaks production, because a major fucking app had no tests whatsoever, also half of the team has 30+ years of experience in backend, laughs about TS on the server (which is actually fair) and I'm the frontend guy

When xcode wont stop whinging about your lack of updating a var since creation. Yes. Its currently looking immutable but will be updated in a short while when I get to that code!!!!! Hence the reason for var!

"Oh Lord, let there be var".

How about "it's not your business to know that as long as they deliver what's necessary"?
That whole tracking and screenshot software movement for remote work is so vile, main reason I work at fixed rates where I just add a percentage of space on top and then do new contracts if they exceed that.10 -
Imagine enabling verbose logging for a complex ETL process that typically takes 8 hours to run but has been failing for some reason after running for about 7 hours. Naturally, you want to check the log file to find out what went wrong.

Is it just me or anyone else feels anxious due to work, even when there is no reason to be.
I have 2 3 meetings each day, whenever I know that I have to speak in the meeting about something I get anxious. This anxiety can hit anytime, maybe 1 hour or 10 hours before the meeting.
I feel like whatever I am going to say is dumb, people will judge me. No matter whatever people suggest on this, that no on's actually thinking about you or asking questions is good, this anxiety doesn't go.
Please help if you had same kind of problem. Share your scenarios of you were in anything like this.1 -
Just updated to ( lol was forced to update to, because Microsoft doesn't give a fuck about your internet plans ) windows 10 build 1809 ( shitbox ) which erased my documents folder, uninstalled some of my games ( The only reason I was still using windows) and uninstalled my graphics driver. What did those guys smoke while writing the code for this update???!!!!! I mean if this is a work of some notorious guy who is just trying to create chaos then kudos, but this update didn't leave a choice to permanently switch to linux.3

Fuck.
I've just seen work offer in my city for junior unity developer. I'd love to work as a game dev (and currently am finishing my first "real" game in this engine) but I feel too anxious to send my CV.
Also for some weird reason I feel attachment and loyalty to my current employer, even though I'm more often pissed about working there than not. Stockholm Syndrome?3 -
Started learning salesforce 1 month back. Felt somewhat manageable.
Got the repository on Monday. Its a fucking spaghetti. A billion different conventions all around the place, no comments anywhere (except for 1% maybe 5 of the places where it needs to be), and for some reason the Checkpoint sync wont work with this project (although it works if I use a scratch or or trailhead playgrounds).
I am starting to think about unlearning this and try some new department of the company. Problem is, the employer is great at Salesforce himself, and he has high hopes from me.7 -
Yeah, I chickened out a little bit when someone had asked me about my project. Yeah, you covered a little bit for me and I'm thankful for that.
But for heaven's sake you broken vinyl disc I don't have to listen to your accusations for a whole day. Your hypocritical behavior put me in that stressful situation in the very first place.
There's a perfectly fine reason why the teacher occasionally tells you to simply shut the fuck up and I guess you already know that.

Have anyone used machine learning in real world use cases? (would be nice if you can describe the case in a few words)
I'm reading about the topic and do some testing stuff but at the moment my feeling is that ml is like blockchain. It solves a specific type of problem and for some reason everyone wants to have this problem.7 -

How in heart is possible to work with a router that randomly shutdowns itself around 3/4 times a day without any reason. Leaving me without internet for 10-15 minutes. I called my ISP and they said that they don't see any problem and they will not send any replacement. I can instead fix an appointment with their technician to have a look at the issue, but of couse, I'm paying for him.
How about no? I'm going to buy a proper modem/router next month, this shit router they give you have 1/100 of the proper configurations options you need.2 -
I recently refactored a form with complex client side interactivity for one of my clients replacing jquery with vuejs in the process and I'm absolutely baffled by how easier it is to reason about everything when you think of the UI as a function of the state. Only devs who have done both imperative and declarative DOM manipulation at some point in their life can understand the joy of doing this. And all of this can be done with just a simple script tag without having to bring in complex build process that has plagued the Javascript ecosystem.

Best part about being a dev: Encountering problems and being able to fix what I find.
Having the flexibility to reason through solutions and occasionally write my own. -
I was just curious about this: how many of you guys uses emacs/vim? Is it your main editor or just for quick editing? Any specific reason besides familiarity?
I ask this because I'm a late adopter of emacs. It is my quick editor (I use jetbrains IDEs). Fell in love with mu4e and twitter-mode, but org-mode was the deal breaker.3 -
I have a nice laptop already. Yet I see this and want it. It is about what I paid for my current lappy. The nice part is more ram, more cores, and a 2060 gfx. Right now I am running a 1650 gfx.
I just don't have a "good" reason to get this. I am glad lappy prices have finally gotten near normal again.

Looking at server rentals prices.
Windows ones are, as a rule, about 2x more expensive than linux ones.
Which made me realize the reason why it's usually the more crap tech that wins and spreads:
because usually the more crap tech is free.
We're a bunch of cheapskates willing to impose shit tech on ourselves in the name of saving a few bucks.
In other news, there's no news today.5 -
What do you think about psychometric tests? I doubt a test can define the type of person you are nor your characteristics. I think it's ambigous, unprecise and extremely subjective. Today I was rejected from a job offer because "the psychometric department didn't give their vote of approval". This is the first time I get rejected for that reason, in the past nobody complained about the results of my tests. I don't know if psychometry is useful, but this company is looking for someone different, or maybe psychometry is, in fact, subjective and any fool can interpret your results however he feels like: "Oh, so he likes kittens over puppies, he's a potential serial killer, let's reject him"1

Couple days ago, I started working on online IDE using https://ace.c9.io/ .. All the functions they have are good, but documentation wasn't that good and I had to learn things by my own. I customized a theme for it to look more like atom lol, added snippet menus and some other stuff, but thinking about it the reason I started is that i saw Thimble by Mozilla and felt jealous because it looks so cool, and I want to make some thing like it.8

Yesterday, I attended a seminar about agile methods, Agile Islands. I attended it last year too, and have previously attended more or less evangelist lectures about agile so my expectations were frankly not that high. But, I have to say...WOW! Now I finally get what agile is all about! The reason that I haven't been convinced until now is that we've been doing it all wrong :)3

I've been working on this personal project for awhile, I showed some screenshots, then I showed some updates (which I promptly deleted cause it was plain ugly). A website aimed at the "not-so-seasoned" devs, and I've been at a creative plateau for about 3 days now. I try to do some front-end, when I like what I see, I take care of the corresponding server-side logic, but for some reason, I'm having "Developer's block" (is that even a thing?).
Every second that goes by I try to do something else none code related, but I can't shake thinking about the project, but once I switch back to it, fuckin crickets.
I'm not asking a question this time (for once lol), just a mini dev's block rant. -

What do you think about the new Youtube layout?
New Youtube, new bugs.
I reported a bug when it was opt-in and guess what, it's still here: in subscription feed's listed view, scrolling is laggy after loading more items with stepless scrolling (e.g. Chrome w/ touchpad). So many unnecessary animations.
It's just really frustrating when you try to info large company about a bug and they do nothing. The previous ones are also still there...
I guess it's time to reboot my Youtube Data API client project, which I started just for this reason.3 -
Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
I published a pretty small app about a year ago that was just a small financial widget for your home screen. Recently I added more in app functionality and graphs but left the widget part unchanged.
For some reason I am now getting even less installs and my active user count has dropped. Any idea why people who used it in the widget only days would suddenly leave?
The link is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...2 -
The more I learn about Spring... It feels like it just hides complexity.... And thus allows developers to make their apps more complex?
I can imagine there will be a Component class with like 20 references to other components either directly or indirectly... But then when something crashes or some error in output data is noticed in prod for some reason...
You cant tell exactly what cause the error because the objects' state is so complex, not sure which component or combination actually causes the issue.
Essentially makes a lot of black boxes?10 -
So this guy says he’s afraid of Abe crazy guy killing him and so he’s dressing in a scary shirt for this reason so I say “yeah they’ll think twice before stabbing you in your sleep “

for some reason twitter showed as the first trend the word epiphany and the first thing i thought about was the web browser.
Was pretty good and light but missed a lot of things. -
Found a little magazine when I was 12 which talked about HTML.
Then later, a friend talked about VBS and VB.NET and I just started making prank shit in that...
Then later back to making websites and basically just grew from there really...
Only followed a formal education on programming once... Which I got kicked out off because I ended my first year with a splendid 2 (that 1 point for adequate attendance).
The fun part? I failed because I was too good :^)
All my grades where a 1 or a 2 because my code was made using tools and libraries that they didn't want me to touch or even know about until 3rd of 4th year...
So yea, I failed everything with the reason being: "Not according to the exercise".
Another fun part: We had to make a personal blog in the 1st year using the techniques we had learned.
Sites were published on a *public* server...
Someone hacked all sites... except mine :^) -

Looking into devcontainers, trying to avoid having to install every little piece of 'dev tool' into my system, so i can savely test rust.
The CLI to manage devcontainers in the standards requires yarn and nodejs to be installed, and further more is another little piece of 'dev tool'. nodejs literally destroyed my system multiple times, and is the whole reason why i am cautious about installing random tools in my system in the first place.
I feel so alone in this world sometimes.5 -
Okay so I've been away from coding for about 2months now I think. Pretty sure I've forgotten almost everything about the languages I knew, except the basics. We create home automation S/W and have it installed in the workplace.
For some reason the lights in the Help Desk/Testing department didn't turn on this morning. At the time our lead engineer was there too.
Rather then try sort it out themselves, they called R&D and got us to check the issue out. Turns out the lighting had been tripped over the weekend when the maintenance department was doing some work.
As we were investigating the issue they were just talking about their weekend so could of easily investigated it themselves! -

Solution for some reason doesn't work correctly on dotnet core so I try with framework => works. Develop a bit further, not touching anything that happens BEFORE the broken point. Then done far enough that actually have to seriously think about deployment. Framework solution is a headache => decide to try dotnet core again and hopefully find a fix for the broken part => magically everything works. What? WHAT?
